Ants of the genus Solenopsis Westwood in the Arabian Peninsula are revised. Six species are treated: Solenopsis elhawagryi Sharaf & Aldawood sp. n., S. geminata (Fabricius, 1804), S. omana Collingwood & Agosti, 1996, S. saudiensis Sharaf & Aldawood, 2011, S. sumara Collingwood & Agosti, 1996, and S. zingibara Collingwood & Agosti, 1996. Solenopsis elhawagryi is described from Beljorashi Governorate, Al Baha Province, Saudi Arabia, based on worker castes and the queen with notes on this species biology and ecology. Solenopsis sumara workers are redescribed and illustrated for the first time and a lectotype is designated. An identification key to the Arabian and Egyptian species is provided with scanning electron micrographs to facilitate species recognition.  相似文献

The Solid phase synthesis (SPS) concept, first developed for biopolymers, has spread in every field where organic synthesis is involved. While the potential of the solid-phase method was obvious in 1959 to its discoverer, Prof. R. B. Merrifield, it was unpredictable its dominance in peptide synthesis and especially in combinatorial chemistry, an area not yet conceived. SPS paved the way for solid-phase combinatorial approaches (extensively reviewed in (Choong, I. C. and Ellman, J. A.: 1996, Annu. Rep. Med. Chem. 31, 309–318; Obrecht, D. and Villalgordo, J. M.: 1998, Solid-supported Combinatorial and Parallel Synthesis of Small-Molecular-Weight Compound Libraries. Pergamon Press Ltd., Oxford, UK; Chabala, J. C.: 1995, Curr. Opin. Res. 29, 144–154)) as many laboratories and companies focused on the development of technologies and chemistry suitable to this new methodology. This resulted in the spectacular outburst of combinatorial chemistry, which profoundly changed the approach for new drug discovery. Combinatorial chemistry is currently considered a valid approach for a wide range of biomedical applications, such as, target validation and drug discovery.  相似文献

We have identified a highly informative dinucleotide repeat in the 5′-flanking region of the human high mobility group I-C (HMGI-C) gene. This polymorphism consists of 18–37 copies of a (CT) repeat with an observed heterozygosity of 82–83% in African Americans and Caucasians. Linkage analysis in CEPH pedigrees localized the HMGI-C gene to chromosome region 12q13–15 with no recombination observed between HMCI-C and markers D12S102 and D12S8. Previous research has found that dogs will search accurately for an invisibly displaced object when the task is simplified and contextual ambiguity is eliminated [Doré, F.Y., Fiset, S., Goulet, S., Dumas, M.-C., Gagnon, S., 1996. Search behavior in cats and dogs: interspecific differences in working memory and spatial cognition. Animal Learning & Behavior 24, 142-149; Miller, H., Gipson, C., Vaughan, A., Rayburn-Reeves, R., Zentall, T.R., 2009. Object permanence in dogs: invisible displacement in a rotation task. Psychonomic Bulletin & Review 16 (1), 150-155]. For example, when an object is placed inside an occluder, one of which was attached to each end of a beam that could be rotated 90°, dogs search inside of the appropriate occluder. The current research confirmed this finding and tested the possibility that the dogs were using a perceptual/conditioning mechanism (i.e., their gaze was drawn to the occluder as the object was placed inside and they continued looking at it as it rotated). The test was done by introducing a delay between the displacement of the object and the initiation of the dogs’ search. In Experiment 1, during the delay, a barrier was placed between the dog and the apparatus. In Experiment 2, the lights were turned off during the delay. The search accuracy for some dogs was strongly affected by the delay, however, search accuracy for other dogs was not affected. These results suggest that although a perceptual/conditioning mechanism may be involved for some dogs, it cannot account for the performance of others. It is likely that these other dogs showed true object permanence.  相似文献

The structure of bovine odorant-binding protein (bOBP) revealed a striking feature of a dimer formed by domain swapping [Tegoni, M., Ramoni, R., Bignetti, E., Spinelli, S. & Cambillau, C. (1996) Nat. Struct. Biol.3, 863-867; Bianchet, M.A., Bains, G., Pelosi, P., Pevsner, J., Snyder, S.H., Monaco, H.L. & Amzel, L.M. (1996) Nat. Struct. Biol.3, 934-939] and the presence of a naturally occuring ligand [Ramoni, R., Vincent, F., Grolli, S., Conti, V., Malosse, C., Boyer, F.D., Nagnan-Le Meillour, P., Spinelli, S., Cambillau, C. & Tegoni, M. (2001) J. Biol. Chem.276, 7150-7155]. These features led us to investigate the binding of odorant molecules with bOBP in solution and in the crystal. The behavior of odorant molecules in bOBP resembles that observed with porcine OBP (pOBP), although the latter is monomeric and devoid of ligand when purified. The odorant molecules presented K(d) values with bOBP in the micromolar range. Most of the X-ray structures revealed that odorant molecules interact with a common set of residues forming the cavity wall and do not exhibit specific interactions. Depending on the ligand and on the monomer (A or B), a single residue--Phe89--presents alternate conformations and might control cross-talking between the subunits. Crystal data on both pOBP and bOBP, in contrast with binding and spectroscopic studies on rat OBP in solution, reveal an absence of significant conformational changes involving protein loops or backbone. Thus, the role of OBP in signal triggering remains unresolved.  相似文献

The sequence of the rrnA operon and its flanking regions was determined for the Agrobacterium vitis type strain NCPPB3554. Compared to the earlier obtained rrnA sequence of A. vitis strain S4, several important differences were noted: the sequences diverged at the 5′-flanking region, within the 16S–23S intergenic region, and within the 23S rRNA sequence. The B8 stem-loop structure at the 5′-end of the 23S rRNA of strain NCPPB3554 was 142 nt shorter than that of strain S4. These findings have important consequences for the use of ribosomal RNA gene sequences in phylogenetic comparisons. Received: 16 February 1996 / Accepted: 26 April 1996  相似文献

The coordinated interaction of kinases, phosphatases and other regulatory molecules with scaffolding proteins is emerging as a major theme in intracellular signaling networks. In this report we show that a cDNA isolated from a rat testis expression library by interactive cloning using the regulatory subunit (R) of a type-II protein kinase A (PKA) is identical with a previously characterized protein kinase C (PKC)-binding protein termed either clone 72 [Chapline, C., Mousseau, B., Ramsay, K., Duddy, S., Li, Y., Kiley, S. C. & Jaken, S. (1996) J. Biol. Chem. 271, 6417-6422] or SSeCKS [Lin, X., Tombler, E., B., Nelson, P.J., Ross, M. & Gelman, I.H. (1996) J. Biol. Chem. 271, 28430-28438]. Deletion mutagenesis demonstrated that amino acids 1495-1524 of clone 72/SSeCKS had the ability to interact with RII. Antibodies prepared against the recombinant protein recognized a 280/290-kDa doublet and a 240-kDa protein on Western blots of rat testis cytosolic and Triton X-100 extracts. Expression of clone 72/SSeCKS mRNA and protein levels was developmentally regulated in rat testis. Northern-blot analysis showed a dramatic increase in clone 72/SSeCKS-hybridizing mRNA starting 30 days after birth. Immunohistochemical examination showed high expression levels in elongating spermatids. Clone 72/SSeCKS was not detected in mature sperm. These studies suggest a role for clone 72/SSeCKS, a PKA/PKC scaffolding protein, during the process of spermiogenesis.  相似文献
