The Australasian region contains a significant proportion of worldwide Poa diversity, but the evolutionary relationships of taxa from this region are incompletely understood. Most Australasian species have been placed in a monophyletic Poa subgenus, Poa supersection Homalopoa section Brizoides clade, but with limited resolution of relationships. In this study, phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed for Australasian Poa, using three plastid (rbcL and matK genes and the rpl32‐trnL intergenic spacer) and two nuclear [internal/external transcribed spacer (ITS/ETS)] markers. Seventy‐five Poa spp. were represented (including 42 Australian, nine New Guinean, nine New Zealand and three Australian/New Zealand species). Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference criteria were applied for phylogenetic reconstruction. Divergence dates were estimated using Bayesian inference, with a relaxed clock applied and rates sampled from an uncorrelated log‐normal distribution. Australasian Poa spp. are placed in three lineages (section Brizoides, section Parodiochloa and the ‘X clade’), each of which is closely related to non‐Australasian taxa or clades. Section Brizoides subsection Australopoa is polyphyletic as currently circumscribed. In Australasia, Poa has diversified within the last 4.3 Mya, with divergence dating results broadly congruent with fossil data that record the appearance of vegetation with a prominent grassland understorey or shrubland/grassland mosaic vegetation dating from the mid‐Pliocene. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 175 , 523–552.  相似文献

The effects of incubation time and deficiencies of calcium and nitrate on zoospore production were investigated in Botrydiopsis arhiza Borzi, B. intercedens Vischer et Pascher, Bumilleriopsis peterseniana Vischer, Pseudobumilleriopsis pyrenoidosa Deason et Bold, and Ophiocytium maius Naegeli. Release of zoospores occurred after the transfer of stationary phase, vegetative cells into fresh Bold's basal medium. Maximum yields of zoospores were produced on the second day after transfer, 0·5–1·0 h after the start of the light period of a 12–12 h light-dark cycle. Lack of calcium or nitrate reduced the yield of zoospores in each taxon. Only O. maius produced large numbers of motile cells in nitrate-free medium.  相似文献

The photosynthetic performance of C4 plants is generally inferior to that of C3 species at low temperatures, but the reasons for this are unclear. The present study investigated the hypothesis that the capacity of Rubisco, which largely reflects Rubisco content, limits C4 photosynthesis at suboptimal temperatures. Photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and the in vitro activity of Rubisco between 5 and 35 °C were measured to examine the nature of the low‐temperature photosynthetic performance of the co‐occurring high latitude grasses, Muhlenbergia glomerata (C4) and Calamogrostis canadensis (C3). Plants were grown under cool (14/10 °C) and warm (26/22 °C) temperature regimes to examine whether acclimation to cool temperature alters patterns of photosynthetic limitation. Low‐temperature acclimation reduced photosynthetic rates in both species. The catalytic site concentration of Rubisco was approximately 5.0 and 20 µmol m?2 in M. glomerata and C. canadensis, respectively, regardless of growth temperature. In both species, in vivo electron transport rates below the thermal optimum exceeded what was necessary to support photosynthesis. In warm‐grown C. canadensis, the photosynthesis rate below 15 °C was unaffected by a 90% reduction in O2 content, indicating photosynthetic capacity was limited by the capacity of Pi‐regeneration. By contrast, the rate of photosynthesis in C. canadensis plants grown at the cooler temperatures was stimulated 20–30% by O2 reduction, indicating the Pi‐regeneration limitation was removed during low‐temperature acclimation. In M. glomerata, in vitro Rubisco activity and gross CO2 assimilation rate were equivalent below 25 °C, indicating that the capacity of the enzyme is a major rate limiting step during C4 photosynthesis at cool temperatures.  相似文献

The southern Australian marine macroalgal flora has the highest levels of species richness and endemism of any regional macroalgal flora in the world. Analyses of species composition and distributions for the southern Australian flora have identified four different floristic elements, namely the southern Australian endemic element, the widely distributed temperate element, the tropical element and a cold water element. Within the southern Australian endemic element, four species distribution patterns are apparent, thought to largely result from the Jurassic to Oligocene fragmentation of East Gondwana, the subsequent migration of Tethyan ancestors from the west Australian coast and the later invasion of high latitude Pacific species. Climatic deterioration from the late Eocene to the present is thought responsible for the replacement of the previous tropical south coast flora by an endemic temperate flora which has subsequently diversified in response to fluctuating environmental conditions, abundant rocky substrata and substantial habitat heterogeneity. High levels of endemism are attributed to Australia's long isolation and maintained, as is the high species richness, by the lack of recent mass extinction events. The warm water Leeuwin Current has had profound influence in the region since the Eocene, flowing to disperse macroalgal species onto the south coast as well as ameliorating the local environment. It is now evident that the high species richness and endemism we now observe in the southern Australian marine macroalgal flora can be attributed to a complex interaction of biogeographical, ecological and phylogenetic processes over the last 160 million years.  相似文献

Morphological comparisons of populations of Filinia from New Zealand and Australia established the presence of an undescribed species in Lake Okaro, N.Z. Filinia novaezealandiae n. sp. is described. SEM micrographs of trophi were used to distinguish closely allied Filinia species. Filinia grandis comb. nov. is redescribed from Australia on the basis of trophi differences from F. pejleri. It is suggested that Filinia species may be more restricted than global records indicate; these records reflect the distribution of authoritative taxonomic references, not necessarily the animals they depict.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analyses show that C4 grasses typically occupy drier habitats than their C3 relatives, but recent experiments comparing the physiology of closely related C3 and C4 species have shown that advantages of C4 photosynthesis can be lost under drought. We tested the generality of these paradoxical findings in grass species representing the known evolutionary diversity of C4 NADP‐me and C3 photosynthetic types. Our experiment investigated the effects of drought on leaf photosynthesis, water potential, nitrogen, chlorophyll content and mortality. C4 grasses in control treatments were characterized by higher CO2 assimilation rates and water potential, but lower stomatal conductance and nitrogen content. Under drought, stomatal conductance declined more dramatically in C3 than C4 species, and photosynthetic water‐use and nitrogen‐use efficiency advantages held by C4 species under control conditions were each diminished by 40%. Leaf mortality was slightly higher in C4 than C3 grasses, but leaf condition under drought otherwise showed no dependence on photosynthetic‐type. This phylogenetically controlled experiment suggested that a drought‐induced reduction in the photosynthetic performance advantages of C4 NADP‐me relative to C3 grasses is a general phenomenon.  相似文献

The Australasian archipelago is biologically extremely diverse as a result of a highly puzzling geological and biological evolution. Unveiling the underlying mechanisms has never been more attainable as molecular phylogenetic and geological methods improve, and has become a research priority considering increasing human‐mediated loss of biodiversity. However, studies of finer scaled evolutionary patterns remain rare particularly for megadiverse Melanesian biota. While oceanic islands have received some attention in the region, likewise insular mountain blocks that serve as species pumps remain understudied, even though Australasia, for example, features some of the most spectacular tropical alpine habitats in the World. Here, we sequenced almost 2 kb of mitochondrial DNA from the widespread diving beetle Rhantus suturalis from across Australasia and the Indomalayan Archipelago, including remote New Guinean highlands. Based on expert taxonomy with a multigene phylogenetic backbone study, and combining molecular phylogenetics, phylogeography, divergence time estimation, and historical demography, we recover comparably low geographic signal, but complex phylogenetic relationships and population structure within R. suturalis. Four narrowly endemic New Guinea highland species are subordinated and two populations (New Guinea, New Zealand) seem to constitute cases of ongoing speciation. We reveal repeated colonization of remote mountain chains where haplotypes out of a core clade of very widespread haplotypes syntopically might occur with well‐isolated ones. These results are corroborated by a Pleistocene origin approximately 2.4 Ma ago, followed by a sudden demographic expansion 600,000 years ago that may have been initiated through climatic adaptations. This study is a snapshot of the early stages of lineage diversification by peripatric speciation in Australasia, and supports New Guinea sky islands as cradles of evolution, in line with geological evidence suggesting very recent origin of high altitudes in the region.  相似文献

Bioenergy grass species are a renewable energy source, but their productivity has not been fully realized. Improving photosynthetic efficiency has been proposed as a mechanism to increase the productivity of bioenergy grass species. Fluctuating light, experienced by all field grown crops, is known to reduce photosynthetic efficiency. This experiment aimed to evaluate the photosynthetic performance of both C3 and C4 bioenergy grass species under steady state and fluctuating light conditions by examining leaf gas exchange. The fluctuating light regime used here decreased carbon assimilation across all species when compared to expected steady state values. Overall, C4 species assimilated more carbon than C3 species during the fluctuating light regime, with both photosynthetic types assimilating about 16% less carbon than expected based on steady state measurements. Little diversity was observed in response to fluctuating light among C3 species, and photorespiration partially contributed to the rapid decreases in net photosynthetic rates during high to low light transitions. In C4 species, differences among the four NADP-ME species were apparent. Diversity observed among C4 species in this experiment provides evidence that photosynthetic efficiency in response to fluctuating light may be targeted to increase C4 bioenergy grass productivity.  相似文献

Abstract

The distribution and movements of Buller's albatross in Australasian seas are analysed using results of shipborne surveys (13 238 10‐min counts), counts from trawlers, banding data, recoveries on beaches and fishing vessels, and records from the literature. Patterns of marine distribution are documented by monthly accounts and maps. During the breeding season, highest abundances are recorded over shelves and slopes off southern New Zealand (The Snares shelf to 41–43°S off the South Island, D. b. bulleri), around the Chatham Islands and over oceanic subtropical waters east of New Zealand (probably D. b. platei), with marked seasonal variations observed off southern New Zealand. Both subspecies disperse mostly outside Australasian waters during the non‐breeding season. Birds banded on The Snares were recovered off south‐eastern New Zealand (Stewart Island to Cook Strait) and in the eastern tropical Pacific. Immatures accounted for only 0.25% of birds censused during the ship‐borne surveys; they are recorded around the New Zealand mainland in August‐October and February‐May, off south‐eastern Australia and in the Tasman Sea in November‐December, February, and June‐July. Around New Zealand, males predominate among birds recovered along the eastern seaboard, whereas the sex ratio in south‐western waters tends to vary according to water depth and season. Distribution patterns and movements in New Zealand and Australian seas are discussed in relation to breeding events and breeding status.  相似文献

Abstract In this study the contribution of climatic factors and phylogenetic relationships affecting the geographical distribution of C3 and C4 genera of the Cyperaceae in South Africa was investigated. The δ13C values of herbarium specimens of 68 southern African species from 22 genera and eight tribes were used to assign the species to either the C3 or C4 photosynthetic pathway. Geographical distribution data for the Cyperaceae were used to investigate relationships between climatic factors and the number of species and proportional abundance of C4 species per region. The number of Cyperaceae species per 2° × 2° square across South Africa varied from less than five in the north‐western regions to more than 15 in the south‐western and north‐eastern regions of South Africa where rainfall exceeds 800 mm y‐1. Of the 68 species investigated, 28 had C4 photosynthesis and these were scattered among nine genera of four tribes (Cypereae, Scirpeae, Abildgaardieae and Rhyncosporeae). The proportional abundance of C4 species ranged from 14% in the winter rainfall regions of the south‐west of South Africa to 67% in the summer rainfall areas of the north‐east. The geographical distribution of species was related to their phylogenetic position such that the distributions of C3 and C4 species in Cypereae, Scirpeae and Schoeneae was quite distinct. Linear regression analysis showed that the transition temperatures (equal C3 and C4 species numbers) for the Cyperaceae were different to those obtained for the Poaceae from the same region. No strong relationships were found between the proportional abundance of C4 species and other climate factors such as altitude and rainfall. Our analysis of the current geographical distribution of C4 Cyperaceae in southern Africa in a phylogenetic context suggests that the ecological advantages conferred by the C4 pathway differ amongst the different plant groups.  相似文献

A cytotaxonomic investigation was undertaken to assess the taxonomic status of the grasses Alloteropsis semialata subsp. eckloniana and A. semialata subsp. semialata , distinguished because of a C3 photosynthetic pathway in subsp. eckloniana and a C4 pathway in subsp. semialata. Of the 30 analysed specimens of population A, 14 (46.7%) were diploid, 14 (46.7%) hexaploid, one octoploid (3.3%) and one dodecaploid (3.3%). Of the 21 specimens of population B, 14 (66.7%) were diploid, three (14.3%) hexaploid and four (19.0%) octoploid. All the diploids belonged to subsp. eckloniana , while all the polyploids belonged to subsp. semialata. Meiosis of the diploids appeared normal, with nine bivalents and a mean metaphase I chiasma frequency of 12.7 per cell. The hexaploids displayed a large range of chromosome pairing associations, although a high percentage of bivalents was recorded (89.9%). Three of the hexaploids showed 100% bivalent pairing, but the largest multivalent found in other hexaploids was a hexavalent pairing. The three octoploids analysed had 93.5% bivalent pairing. B chromosomes were found in five diploids, two hexaploids and one octoploid. Slow-moving bivalents, two in the diploids and up to four in the polyploids segregated late at anaphase I in most specimens.  相似文献

Aim and location New Zealand began to separate from Gondwana c. 85 Ma, and has been isolated from the nearest large landmass, Australia, by some 2000 km of the Tasman Sea since c. 60 Ma. Given New Zealand's long geographical isolation, there has been considerable interest in explaining the origins of its different biotic elements. Here we investigate the biogeography of the fern genus Polystichum from temperate Australasia. Six species are found in New Zealand, four in Australia, and two on Lord Howe Island. Methods The evolutionary relationships between the twelve Polystichum species found in temperate Australasia were inferred from phylogenetic analyses of two molecular data sets: DNA sequence from the chloroplast rps4–trnS spacer locus; and AFLP DNA‐fingerprinting. The timing of the separation between Australian and New Zealand Polystichum was estimated by using the fossil record to temporally calibrate the rbcL sequence differentiation between representative species from these regions. Results Species of Polystichum from New Zealand appear to comprise a monophyletic group. This suggests that Polystichum crossed the Tasman only once. Temporal calibration of the rbcL sequence differentiation between Australian and New Zealand Polystichum indicates that a vicariant explanation for their separation can be rejected in favour of trans‐oceanic dispersal. Main conclusions The extant diversity within New Zealand Polystichum appears to have been derived from a single, trans‐oceanic dispersal event (within the last c. 20 Myr), followed by a relatively extensive in situ ecological radiation.  相似文献

We investigate the phylogeny, biogeography, time of origin and diversification, ancestral area reconstruction and large‐scale distributional patterns of an ancient group of arachnids, the harvestman suborder Cyphophthalmi. Analysis of molecular and morphological data allow us to propose a new classification system for the group; Pettalidae constitutes the infraorder Scopulophthalmi new clade , sister group to all other families, which are divided into the infraorders Sternophthalmi new clade and Boreophthalmi new clade . Sternophthalmi includes the families Troglosironidae, Ogoveidae, and Neogoveidae; Boreophthalmi includes Stylocellidae and Sironidae, the latter family of questionable monophyly. The internal resolution of each family is discussed and traced back to its geological time origin, as well as to its original landmass, using methods for estimating divergence times and ancestral area reconstruction. The origin of Cyphophthalmi can be traced back to the Carboniferous, whereas the diversification time of most families ranges between the Carboniferous and the Jurassic, with the exception of Troglosironidae, whose current diversity originates in the Cretaceous/Tertiary. Ancestral area reconstruction is ambiguous in most cases. Sternophthalmi is traced back to an ancestral land mass that contained New Caledonia and West Africa in the Permian, whereas the ancestral landmass for Neogoveidae included the south‐eastern USA and West Africa, dating back to the Triassic. For Pettalidae, most results include South Africa, or a combination of South Africa with the Australian plate of New Zealand or Sri Lanka, as the most likely ancestral landmass, back in the Jurassic. Stylocellidae is reconstructed to the Thai‐Malay Penisula during the Jurassic. Combination of the molecular and morphological data results in a hypothesis for all the cyphophthalmid genera, although the limited data available for some taxa represented only in the morphological partition negatively affects the phylogenetic reconstruction by decreasing nodal support in most clades. However, it resolves the position of many monotypic genera not available for molecular analysis, such as Iberosiro, Odontosiro, Speleosiro, Managotria or Marwe, although it does not place Shearogovea or Ankaratra within any existing family. The biogeographical data show a strong correlation between relatedness and formerly adjacent landmasses, and oceanic dispersal does not need to be postulated to explain disjunct distributions, especially when considering the time of divergence. The data also allow testing of the hypotheses of the supposed total submersion of New Zealand and New Caledonia, clearly falsifying submersion of the former, although the data cannot reject the latter. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 92–130.  相似文献

Thirty-three diatom taxa were collected from the large terminal salt lake, Lake Eyre South, located in south-central Australia. The diatom assemblage included taxa that were widely distributed in marine and saline athalassic habitats in both northern and southern hemispheres, with the diatom flora of Lake Eyre South most similar to that of southern Africa. This study represents the first report on the diatom flora of Lake Eyre South and supports the findings that episodically filled lakes do not appear to be good evolutionary loci.  相似文献

Abstract. An experimental matrix of water stress and disturbance was superimposed on a Lolium perenne-Trifolium repens grassland using a crossed-gradient design, and the annual subtropical grass Digitaria sanguinalis was introduced into the pasture as seeds and transplanted seedlings. Digitaria plants achieved maximum biomass at high water availability and high disturbance. Digitaria plants grown from transplanted seedlings attained greater biomass further from the conditions of high water availability and high disturbance, compared with those that had grown from seed. The biomass of the temperate species was maximized with high water availability and low to intermediate disturbance conditions. The reproductive effort of Digitaria was maximized under intermediate to high water availability and intermediate to low disturbance. Combinations of water stress and disturbance that gave rise to maximum growth of the temperate and subtropical species were consistent with those predicted by C-S-R theory. Results suggest that processes in the regenerative phase of the plant life cycle were constraining the success of Digitaria in New Zealand grassland. Addition of seed to the soil seed bank would probably be maximized in patches of grassland with high disturbance and water availability; these patches will subsequently act as foci for future invasions by Digitaria.  相似文献

South-West and Central Asia are major centres of diversity in the genus Heliotropium . On the basis of detailed taxonomic studies and information gathered from the literature, a synopsis of 61 known species of Heliotropium and two species of Arguzia in the area is given. Iran, with 32 species and 14 (sub)endemic species, has the highest diversity. The photosynthetic pathways of 42 taxa were determined using the isotope composition method. Except for H. marifolium Retz s.l. and H. rariflorum Stocks, all remaining species analysed showed δ13C values characteristic for C3 photosynthesis. Evidently, by contrast with the families Chenopodiaceae and Polygonaceae, the Irano-Turanian area is not an authochthonous region of developing C4 species in Heliotropium . The distribution maps of 57 taxa are provided and their biogeographical importance is discussed in order to elucidate the distribution patterns in South-West Asia. In the Irano-Turanian region, the Irano-Anatolian province of Zohary, which extends from central Anatolia to the western Himalaya, is a very large and vaguely defined phytochorion that should be split into smaller units. The consideration of southern Iran and adjacent Pakistan as part of the Sudanian or Saharo-Sindian regions ( sensu either Zohary or Léonard) cannot be accepted, because most endemic species in this area are either typical Irano-Turanian or isolated relicts. Furthermore, it is concluded that the Saharo-Sindian flora is not an autochthonous flora; most species are of transgressive origin from the surrounding phytochoria. Finally, a new species, Heliotropium ziegleri Akhani, is described from Iran.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 155 , 401–425.  相似文献

We demonstrate for the first time the presence of species exhibiting C3-C4 intermediacy in Heliotropium (sensu lato), a genus with over 100 C3 and 150 C4 species. CO2 compensation points (Gamma) and photosynthetic water-use efficiencies (WUEs) were intermediate between C3 and C4 values in three species of Heliotropium: Heliotropium convolvulaceum (Gamma = 20 micromol CO2 mol(-1) air), Heliotropium racemosum (Gamma = 22 micromol mol(-1)) and Heliotropium greggii (Gamma = 17 micromol mol(-1)). Heliotropium procumbens may also be a weak C3-C4 intermediate based on a slight reduction in Gamma (48.5 micromol CO2 mol(-1)) compared to C3Heliotropium species (52-60 micromol mol(-1)). The intermediate species H. convolvulaceum, H. greggii and H. racemosum exhibited over 50% enhancement of net CO2 assimilation rates at low CO2 levels (200-300 micromol mol(-1)); however, no significant differences in stomatal conductance were observed between the C3 and C3-C4 species. We also assessed the response of Gamma to variation in O2 concentration for these species. Heliotropium convolvulaceum, H. greggii and H. racemosum exhibited similar responses of Gamma to O2 with response slopes that were intermediate between the responses of C3 and C4 species below 210 mmol O2 mol(-1) air. The presence of multiple species displaying C3-C4 intermediate traits indicates that Heliotropium could be a valuable new model for studying the evolutionary transition from C3 to C4 photosynthesis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Little information is available on DNA C-values for the New Zealand flora. Nearly 85 % of the named species of the native vascular flora are endemic, including 157 species of Poaceae, the second most species-rich plant family in New Zealand. Few C-values have been published for New Zealand native grasses, and chromosome numbers have previously been reported for fewer than half of the species. The aim of this research was to determine C-values and chromosome numbers for most of the endemic and indigenous Poaceae from New Zealand. SCOPE: To analyse DNA C-values from 155 species and chromosome numbers from 55 species of the endemic and indigenous grass flora of New Zealand. KEY RESULTS: The new C-values increase significantly the number of such measurements for Poaceae worldwide. New chromosome numbers were determined from 55 species. Variation in C-value and percentage polyploidy were analysed in relation to plant distribution. No clear relationship could be demonstrated between these variables. CONCLUSIONS: A wide range of C-values was found in the New Zealand endemic and indigenous grasses. This variation can be related to the phylogenetic position of the genera, plants in the BOP (Bambusoideae, Oryzoideae, Pooideae) clade in general having higher C-values than those in the PACC (Panicoideae, Arundinoideae, Chloridoideae + Centothecoideae) clade. Within genera, polyploids typically have smaller genome sizes (C-value divided by ploidy level) than diploids and there is commonly a progressive decrease with increasing ploidy level. The high frequency of polyploidy in the New Zealand grasses was confirmed by our additional counts, with only approximately 10 % being diploid. No clear relationship between C-value, polyploidy and rarity was evident.  相似文献
