A cladistic study of Anllastrum, Angophora and Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae). Transformed cladistic; character compatibility; branch and bound, and Farris-Wagner methods gave similar solutions in a cladistic study of Arillastrum, Angophora and Eucalyptus. These analyses, based on morphological characters, indicate that Eucalyptus is a monophyletic group and that its sister taxon is Angophora.
Within Eucalyptus , subgenera Blakella and Corymbia are sister taxa to all other groups; subgenera Monocalyptus, Idiogenes and Gaubaea form a monophyletic group with subgenus Monocalyptus sister to subgenera Idiogenes and Gaubaea ; subgenera Symphyomyrtus and Telocalyptus together also form a monophyletic group and, with Eucalyptus similis (subgenus Eudesmia group 4), are sister to the Monocalyptus group. Eucalyptus subgenus Telocalyptus (4 species), Eucalyptus subgenus Idiogenes (1 species) and Eucalyptus subgenus Gaubaea (2 species) should not be recognized as subgenera and some individual species need further examination. Eucalyptus subgenus Eudesmia is a paraphyletic group.
Some characters are identified as parallelisms, e.g. axillary inflorescences, sepaline operculum, bristle glands, and clustered anthers. A more congruent interpretation of the single operculum of Eucalyptus subgenus Monocalyptus as at least partly petaline rather than solely sepaline in origin is suggested.
The area relationships for the taxa are concordant with those derived from geological and climatological information. New Caledonia is sister area to Australia, and within Australia southwestern Australia is sister area to south-eastern and north-eastern Australia.  相似文献

ITS sequence data resolve higher level relationships among the eucalypts.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA were obtained for 35 species of Eucalyptus s.s. and seven taxa representing five outgroup genera (Allosyncarpia, Angophora, Arillastrum, Corymbia, and Stockwellia). The sequences were analyzed cladistically. The data distinguished clearly between the two major subgenera of Eucalyptus s.s. (Symphyomyrtus and Monocalyptus) but indicated that subgenus Eudesmia may be paraphyletic. ITS sequence data demonstrated the potential to resolve relationships between sections within subgenus Symphyomyrtus. Within sections, however, taxa were poorly differentiated. At the generic level, Corymbia appeared to be paraphyletic due to the exclusion of Angophora. The positions of Allosyncarpia and Arillastrum relative to the ingroup remain unresolved. ITS sequence data may prove valuable for resolving other phylogenetic relationships at higher taxonomic levels within Eucalyptus.  相似文献

The survival of lignotuberous seedlings of Eucalyptus pauciflora, E. dalrympleana and E. dives following an intense experimental fire was monitored in montane forest in the Brindabella Ranges, Australian Capital Territory. Percentage survival was the same for each species (60%), but it was shown that an individual was more likely to survive if it was large and growing vigorously before the fire. Survival was also enhanced if the individual was growing in a patch of low litter load and if it experienced a locally low fire intensity. Lignotuberous seedlings of E. dalrympleana, a species of the subgenus Symphyomyrtus, recovered more quickly than the other two species which are of the subgenus Monocalyptus. This result parallels conclusions concerning different initial growth rates between seedlings of the subgenera.  相似文献

Mixed stands of eucalypts were examined on several sites in south-eastern Tasmania. Species from the subgenus Monocalyptus (E. puchella and E. obliqua) became dominant over species from the subgenus Symphyomyrtus (E. viminalis and E. globulus) as the age of the stand increased. In glasshouse trials, Symphyomyrtus species were initially at an advantage since they were more opportunistic than Monocalyptus species owing to their more rapid and even germination and higher initial growth rates. In addition, the Monocalyptus species E. pulchella showed a greater tendency to regenerate vegetatively than the Symphyomyrtus species E. viminalis and E. ovata.  相似文献

Abstract This field study was designed to test whether the taxonomic group and geographic range size of a host plant species, usually found to influence insect species richness in other parts of the world, affected the number of gall species on Australian eucalypts. We assessed the local and regional species richness of gall-forming insects on five pairs of closely related eucalypt species. One pair belonged to the subgenus Corymbia, one to Monocalyptus, and three to different sections of Symphyomyrtus. Each eucalypt pair comprised a large and a small geographic range species. Species pairs were from coastal or inland regions of eastern Australia. The total number of gall species on eucalypt species with large geographic ranges was greater than on eucalypt species with small ranges, but only after the strong effect of eucalypt taxonomic grouping was taken into account. There was no relationship between the geographic range size of eucalypt species and the size of local assemblages of gall species, but the variation in insect species composition between local sites was higher on eucalypt species with large ranges than on those with small ranges. Thus the effect of host plant range size on insect species richness was due to greater differentiation between more widespread locations, rather than to greater local species richness. This study confirms the role of the geographic range size of a host plant in the determination of insect species richness and provides evidence for the importance of the taxon of a host plant.  相似文献

This study examined the interspecific amplification of nuclear microsatellite loci developed mainly for eucalypts in the subgenus Symphyomyrtus across five species within the second most speciose subgenus, subgenus Eucalyptus. A set of eight to 10 loci, depending on taxon, have been identified that are highly variable and easily scored. The successful transfer of microsatellite loci to these eucalypt species sidesteps the expensive and time-consuming development of species-specific microsatellite libraries. This primer set will enable the examination and cross-species comparison of the genetic resources of commercially and ecologically important members of the subgenus Eucalyptus.  相似文献

Abstract Eucalypts from the subgenus Monocalyptus tend to be more abundant and dominate species from the subgenus Symphyomyrtus where they occur together in the mixed species stands of southeastern Australia. The differential impacts of herbivory by phytophagous insects has been postulated as a causal mechanism in the creation and maintenance of such stands. This research aimed to quantify phytophagous insect abundance and herbivory in mixed species juvenile regrowth of Eucalyptus globulus, E. viminalis (Symphyomyrtus), E. obliqua and E. pulchella (Monocalyptus} southwest of Hobart, Tasmania. Monocalyptus experienced a higher level of herbivory than Symphyomyrtus. However, mean damage levels were relatively low at less than 11% throughout. Furthermore, due to the positively skewed nature of herbivory data the mean was an inappropriate measure of central tendency; median damage levels ranged from 4.9% to 8.4%. Patterns of herbivory tended to be different for each eucalypt species: E. obliqua was particularly prone to chewing damage, E. pulchella and E. globulus suffered higher levels of distortion while E. viminalis was least affected by insect attack. Even though some trends in insect community structure seemed apparent at the level of eucalypt subgenus, closer examination revealed patterns of abundance were characteristic of each Eucalyptus species. The composition of foliar damage corresponded with the prominence of particular insect groups. Sucking insects tended to dominate the fauna except on E. obliqua where chewing insects in general, and chrysomelids in particular, were most prevalent. Both the distribution and magnitude of herbivory suggested that phytophagous insects had a negligible effect on competition between coexisting juvenile eucalypts and were unlikely to be responsible for the dominance of Monocalyptus or the maintenance of mixed species stands.  相似文献

In this study approximately 420 of the described species of Eucalyptus were examined for cyanogenesis. Our work has identified an additional 18 cyanogenic species, 12 from living tissues and a further six from herbarium samples. This brings the total of known cyanogenic species to 23, representing approximately 4% of the genus. The taxonomic distribution of the species within the genus is restricted to the subgenus Symphyomyrtus, with only two exceptions. Within Symphyomyrtus, the species are in three closely related sections. The cyanogenic glycoside was found to be predominantly prunasin (1) in the 11 species where this was examined. We conclude that cyanogenesis is plesiomorphic in Symphyomyrtus (i.e. a common basal trait) but has probably arisen independently in the other two subgenera, consistent with recent phylogenetic treatments of the genus. The results of this study have important implications for the selection of trees for plantations to support wildlife, and to preserve genetic diversity.  相似文献

We report the widespread occurrence of structurally diverse oleuropeyl glucose esters, including the new diester eucaglobulin B, localized specifically to the essential oil secretory cavities of myrtaceous species. Clear taxonomic patterns in the composition of cavity extracts within the genus Eucalyptus are shown with species from subgenus Symphyomyrtus dominated by oleuropeyl glucose esters and species from subgenus Eucalyptus dominated instead by the flavanone, pinocembrin. We also examined the intra-species occurrence of oleuropeyl glucose esters by quantifying the abundant constituents cuniloside B and froggattiside A in trees from two populations of Eucalyptus polybractea R.T. Baker. All trees contained both compounds, which were positively correlated with total essential oil concentration. This apparent ubiquity of oleuropeyl glucose esters at both intra- and inter-specific levels in Eucalyptus is indicative of important physiological or ecological functions. The significance of their prevalence and the sequestration of these esters and also pinocembrin to the extracellular domain of secretory cavities is discussed in light of their potential biological activities and our findings that they are spatially segregated to the exterior of cavity lumina. The localization of oleuropeyl glucose esters to a specific and isolatable tissue type has the potential to aid in future elucidation of function and biosynthesis.  相似文献

Eight dinucleotide microsatellites were developed in Eucalyptus sieberi L. Johnson (silvertop ash), a member of the subgenus Eucalyptus. Transfer of six of these to the subgenus Symphyomyrtus and their Mendelian inheritance are demonstrated using a full-sib cross in Eucalyptus nitens. Genetic diversity parameters are presented for the eight loci based on a sample of 100 old-growth E. sieberi trees from a single natural stand. One locus, Es266, had an atypically high fixation index, and significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium genotypic proportions, indicating the likely presence of null alleles. Two of the loci, Es076 and Es140, had many alleles that differed in size by only a single base pair, possibly because of short poly(A) or poly(T) stretches in their flanking regions. These two loci were by far the most polymorphic, but were difficult to score reliably on a capillary DNA sequencer. Reliability of scoring of these two one-base microsatellite loci was markedly improved by the incorporation of internal reference alleles into each sample analysed.  相似文献

The evolutionary history of Eucalyptus and the eucalypts, the larger clade of seven genera including Eucalyptus that today have a natural distribution almost exclusively in Australasia, is poorly documented from the fossil record. Little physical evidence exists bearing on the ancient geographical distributions or morphologies of plants within the clade. Herein, we introduce fossil material of Eucalyptus from the early Eocene (ca. 51.9 Ma) Laguna del Hunco paleoflora of Chubut Province, Argentina; specimens include multiple leaves, infructescences, and dispersed capsules, several flower buds, and a single flower. Morphological similarities that relate the fossils to extant eucalypts include leaf shape, venation, and epidermal oil glands; infructescence structure; valvate capsulate fruits; and operculate flower buds. The presence of a staminophore scar on the fruits links them to Eucalyptus, and the presence of a transverse scar on the flower buds indicates a relationship to Eucalyptus subgenus Symphyomyrtus. Phylogenetic analyses of morphological data alone and combined with aligned sequence data from a prior study including 16 extant eucalypts, one outgroup, and a terminal representing the fossils indicate that the fossils are nested within Eucalyptus. These are the only illustrated Eucalyptus fossils that are definitively Eocene in age, and the only conclusively identified extant or fossil eucalypts naturally occurring outside of Australasia and adjacent Mindanao. Thus, these fossils indicate that the evolution of the eucalypt group is not constrained to a single region. Moreover, they strengthen the taxonomic connections between the Laguna del Hunco paleoflora and extant subtropical and tropical Australasia, one of the three major ecologic-geographic elements of the Laguna del Hunco paleoflora. The age and affinities of the fossils also indicate that Eucalyptus subgenus Symphyomyrtus is older than previously supposed. Paleoecological data indicate that the Patagonian Eucalyptus dominated volcanically disturbed areas adjacent to standing rainforest surrounding an Eocene caldera lake.  相似文献

Abstract— A cladistic analysis of the "green ash" eucalypts, informal subgenus " Monocalyptus ", is presented- As a first step, ordination methods of principal coordinates analysis and multidimensional scaling delineated some terminal taxa. The cladistic analysis, applying parsimony methods to the unweighted data set, yielded 25 equally parsimonious trees, each with a consistency index of 0.57.
Farris' successive approximations approach to character weighting produced one tree with a consistency index of 0.74.
An informal classification of the group, superseries Eucalyptus , is based on that cladogram. The biogeographic history of superseries Eucalyptus is interpreted from the cladogram as having been caused by lour vicariant events in southeastern Australia, in combination with a suite of ecological features that overlie the biogeographic area-pattern.  相似文献

Apiomorpha Rubsaamen (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Eriococcidae) is one of the most chromosomally diverse of all animal genera. There is extensive karyotypic variation within many of the morphologically defined species, including A. munita (Schrader) which is here reported to have diploid chromosome counts ranging from 6 to more than 100. Each of the three morphologically defined subspecies of A. munita also displays considerable chromosomal variation: A. m. tereticornuta Gullan (2 n = 6, 8, 20, 22 or 24), A. m. malleensis Gullan (2 n = 6, 20, 22, 24 or 26), and A. m. munita (Schrader) (2 n = 54 or >100). Apiomorpha munita appears to occur only on eucalypts of the informal subgenus Symphyomyrtus , with each of the subspecies of A. munita restricted to discrete symphyomyrt sections. Several different karyotypic forms within each subspecies of A. munita appear to be restricted to only one or a few eucalypt species or series. The association between apparent host specificity and chromosomal rearrangements in A. munita suggests that both may be playing an active role in taxon divergence in Apiomorpha.  相似文献

Formylated phloroglucinol compounds (FPCs) in Eucalyptus leaves are important determinants of feeding in marsupial folivores and have a wide range of other biological actions. We conducted a survey of the occurrence of formylated phloroglucinol compounds (euglobals, macrocarpals and sideroxylonals) in acetone-petrol extracts of 41 species of Eucalyptus from among seven informal subgenera growing on the East Coast of Australia. We used electrospray ionisation, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FTMS) to search crude extracts of eucalypt leaves for molecular weights characteristic of FPC compounds. We found masses characteristic of reported FPCs in 27 of the 41 species examined. The most frequently identified group of compounds was the sideroxylonals. Notable was the lack of known FPCs in the informal subgenus Monocalyptus.  相似文献

Chloroplast sharing in the Tasmanian eucalypts   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The biogeographic pattern of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) haplotypes in Eucalyptus on the island of Tasmania is consistent with reticulate evolution, involving at least 12 Tasmanian species from the subgenus Symphyomyrtus. Intraspecific cpDNA polymorphism in 14 of 17 species is coupled with extensive sharing of identical haplotypes across populations of different species in the same geographic area. Haplotype diversity is lowest in central regions of Tasmania formerly occupied by alpine vegetation during glacial intervals and in northern regions that were periodically linked to continental Australia by land bridges. The observed distribution of several cpDNA haplotypes unique to Tasmania coincides with modeled locations of glacial refugia in coastal areas of Tasmania and shows the power of cpDNA in unraveling the complex history of past distributions of Eucalyptus. The results suggest that the model of evolution of the eucalypts should be reassessed to allow for the anastomosing effects of interspecific hybridization and introgression.  相似文献

The genus Etheostoma is the most diverse clade of freshwater fishes in North America. While studies have been performed with complete sampling of a single subgenus, none have included representatives of all remaining subgenera. The subgenus Oligocephalus is the largest, consisting of 25-27 species in four species groups, and its monophyly has never been clearly demonstrated. The monophyly of this subgenus and its constituent groups was tested using parsimony and Bayesian analyses of ND2 (mtDNA) and the first intron of S7 (nDNA) with complete species sampling from Oligocephalus and complete subgeneric sampling from Etheostoma. Although the subgenus Oligocephalus was not recovered as a monophyletic group in any analyses, monophyletic E. whipplei, Southwestern Darter, and E. spectabile (in part) species groups were recovered in all analyses. All analyses agree that E. okaloosae and both subspecies of E. hopkinsi are not closely related to other members of the subgenus Oligocephalus. E. exile is, however, presenting the strongest evidence yet that recognition of the subgenus Boleichthys is unwarranted.  相似文献

Conservation of microsatellite loci, heterozygous in Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus urophylla, Eucalyptus tereticornis and Eucalyptus globulus, allowed us to propose homeologies among genetic linkage groups in these species, supported by at least three SSR loci in two different linkage groups. Marker-trait associations for sprouting and adventitious rooting ability were also compared in the four species. Putative quantitative trait loci (QTLs) influencing vegetative propagation traits were located on homeologous linkage groups. Our findings indicate high transferability of microsatellite markers between Eucalyptus species of the Symphyomyrtus subgenus and establish foundations for the use of synteny in the genetic analysis of this genus. Microsatellite markers should help integrate eucalypt genetic linkage maps from various sources. The availability of comparative linkage maps provides a basis of more-efficient use of genetic information for molecular breeding and evolutionary studies in Eucalyptus.  相似文献

Abstract An unusual new species of the gall-inducing scale insect genus Apiomorpha Rübsaamen is described from Queensland. The adult female, its gall, and the first-instar nymph (crawler) are illustrated, and relationships of the new species are estimated using mitochondrial COII data. Adult females induce cigar-shaped galls on leaves of several eucalypts in section Adnataria of subgenus Symphyomyrtus . The bilobed anal lobes of the adult female differ from those of all other Apiomorpha species (single lobe) and the first-instar nymph possesses features, such as broad frontal tubercles and dorsal stripes, that are not present in crawlers of other Apiomorpha species. However, DNA sequence data confirm that the new species falls within Apiomorpha , rather than representing a sister group, and indicate that the new species is not closely related to the A. pharetrata (Schrader) species-group, the only other group within Apiomorpha that induces cigar-shaped galls on leaves. The systematic affiliations of A. gullanae sp. n. are currently not known. Females only are known and there is some indication that reproduction in the new taxon is parthenogenetic. This represents the first putative case of parthenogenesis in Apiomorpha .  相似文献

Abstract— A cladistic analysis of the "blue ash" eucalypts ( Eucalyptus , Myrtaceae) is presented. Five equally parsimonious trees were found, and a strict consensus tree constructed. A revised informal classification, recognizing five series ( Planchonianinae, Sphaerocarpinae, Piperitinae, Fraxininae and Haemastominae , informal subgenus Monocalyptus ) is based on the consensus cladogram. A biogeographic analysis applies a new implementation of Assumptions 0 and 1, coding data in the form of three-area statements and using parsimony analysis. These results are used to evaluate hand resolution of Assumption 2. In comparison, Brooks parsimony analysis did not produce area cladograms that best fit the data. Series and subseries were analysed separately for area relationships, which showed a repeated pattern across the blue ash clade; combining all the data in one analysis was seen as equivalent to confounding paralogy and orthology in molecular studies. A resolved area cladogram is presented for southeastern Australia.  相似文献

Antisera to serum albumins from five West Indian species of the frog genus Eleutheroductylus were prepared, and the reciprocal immunological distances (IDs) obtained were used to provide a time frame for the evolution of this group in the West Indies. One-way IDS were obtained to 25 additional species within the genus, with emphasis on those from the West Indies. These immunological data support both a recent classification of Eleutheroductylus based on an analysis of slow-evolving allozyme loci, and the monophyly of the 17 native Jamaican species as indicated by a more comprehensive electrophoretic study. This is in contrast to the results of morphological studies supporting multiple invasions of Jamaica by Eleutherodactylus . Within the subgenus Euhyas , IDS ranged from6–27 between Jamaican species, whereas between species on different islands the range was29–67. The subgenus Syrrhophus in southern North America was found to be the sister group to the subgenus Euhyus , a western Caribbean clade. Pelorius , a subgenus restricted to Hispaniola, was found to be the sister group of the subgenus Eleutheroductylus in the West Indies. The largest IDs obtained for West Indian species were those between the two major groups, the subgenera Eleutheroductylus and Euhyas .
The albumin immunological clock for Eleutheroductylus was calibrated with three events in the geologic history of the Caribbean: the breakup of the proto-Antilles (65-75 million years before present [mybp]), the emergence of Jamaica (20-30 mybp), and the uplift of the Blue Mountains in Jamaica (5-10 mybp). Immunological distances corresponding to those events yield a calibration of 1 ID=0.60 million years (my), the same as that previously obtained for other groups of amphibians and thus supports the use of albumin immunological distance as a molecular chronometer in the genus Eleutherodactylus  相似文献
