In presecuting the investigations on the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis in Chile, a new series of serological surveys has been performed during 1982-1989 in 10 urban and 25 periurban-rural localities from the regions VII, VIII and IX of the country (34 degrees 41'-39 degrees 38' South lat.). In 9,758, randomly selected apparently healthy persons, and indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT) for toxoplasmosis was carried out. The age of these individuals (4,203 males and 5,555 females) varied between 4 and 84 years. The examined persons represent a 0.33% of the total population of the three studied regions. IHAT titers of 1: > or = 16 were regarded as positive. The global prevalence for positive IHAT was 45.5% (50.5% in men and 41.7% in women). A higher proportion of positive tests was observed in urban areas (47.0%) than in periurban-rural sections (33.3%). An increasing prevalence with age was also observed. Only 5 (0.05%) persons had IHAT titers higher than 1:1000. 相似文献

In the region of la Araucania, located in the south of Chile (37 degrees 24'-39 degrees 34' South lat.), the economy is based in cattle raising and agriculture. The cases of human hydatidosis, mortality and notification registered in la Araucania 1991-1998 are reviewed. The rate for hydatid disease is 38.5 per 100,000 population. Liver (47.1%) and lung (40.7%) were the most affected viscera. Days in hospital, 11-20 the 56.1%. Disease in female is 51.1%. The mortality rate is 0.8 per 100,000, the most frequently affected county is Imperial. The age group 15-44 years is the most affected. The notification rate is 8.74 per 100,000 population. The rate for hydatid disease is higher than the rate of notification, then necessarily there exist a subnotification. We think that it is necessary to investigate the serological prevalence of hydatidosis in the population of the IX Region Araucania. 相似文献

This article traces inequality and numeracy development in the regions of Chile during the 19th and early 20th century. Inequality, measured with anthropometric methods, was associated with a lower speed of human capital formation. Not all talents received the necessary education to make full use of their talent for the regional economy, especially in the south in the early period. However, Chile became slightly less unequal over time and more numerate during the late 19th century. In addition, we study the correlates of low-intensity immigration in Chile. Regions with a relatively high share of North European migrants developed faster in terms of numeracy. 相似文献

In December 1988-February 1989 period, a survey on enteroparasitic infections in children (mean age 8.7 years; males 54.4% and females 45.6%) from five schools located in Santiago, Chile, was undertaken. To each of these individuals, three samples were obtained in order to perform in them the following examinations: co-proparasitological study, modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining for detecting Cryptosporidium sp. and cellulose adhesive test for Enterobius vermicularis. Parasitic elements were found in the following percentages: Blastocystis hominis 51.8, Enterobius vermicularis 39.9, Giardia lamblia 32.1, Entamoeba histolytica 7.8, Hymenolepis nana 2.1 and Ascaris lumbricoides 0.4, Cryptosporidium sp. were not observed. The present study would be demonstrating that enteroparasites maintain their endemic condition among school children from Santiago, including B. hominis which had not been searched previously. 相似文献

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. Humans are commonly exposed via inhalation of aerosolized bacteria derived from the waste products of domesticated sheep and goats, and particularly from products generated during parturition. However, many other species can be infected with C. burnetii, and the host range and full zoonotic potential of C. burnetii is unknown. Two cases of C. burnetii infection in marine mammal placenta have been reported, but it is not known if this infection is common in marine mammals. To address this issue, placenta samples were collected from Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardsi), harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), and Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus). Coxiella burnetii was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the placentas of Pacific harbor seals (17/27), harbor porpoises (2/6), and Steller sea lions (1/2) collected in the Pacific Northwest. A serosurvey of 215 Pacific harbor seals sampled in inland and outer coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest showed that 34.0% (73/215) had antibodies against either Phase 1 or Phase 2 C. burnetii. These results suggest that C. burnetii infection is common among marine mammals in this region. 相似文献
