Wild Seriola dumerilii were collected in the South Mediterranean Sea during the 1990, 1991 and 1992 spawning seasons. Macroscopic and cytological characteristics of ovary and testis were analysed. Depending on the presence and the number of oocytes at different stages, a five point maturity scale was proposed for ovarian maturity. Nine maturity stages of the oocytes are described. Oocyte size-frequency distribution has shown a group synchronous ovarian development type. The testes have a typical lobular-type structure. Depending on lobules and sperm duct development and on the abundance of germ cells, testis maturity was classified in four stages. Maturity rate according to age and size was also determined. 100% of 1-year-old fish show immature gonads. The proportion of females with mature ovaries was 0, 12.5, 84.6 and 100% at the age of 2, 3, 4 and 5 years respectively. The proportion of males with mature testes was 14.3, 40, 80 and 100 at the same age. The median standard length at which 50% of the fish attained maturity is 109 and 113 cm SL in males and females respectively.  相似文献

A macroscopic and histological analysis of gonads was carried out during the spawning season of the high-Antarctic channichthyid Chionodraco hamatus in the western Ross Sea. Samples were collected between December and February during several years in the coastal waters of Terra Nova Bay. Gonad maturity stages were described for males and females according to macroscopic and histological scales. Using multi-year data, the estimated length at first spawning of females was about 35 cm TL, very similar to that obtained indirectly for males. Similar to many other high-Antarctic fish, C. hamatus is a summer spawner. The greater part of the stock was indeed in spawning condition between December and February, although a large proportion of females large enough to spawn probably did not spawn in that season. The present data confirm that C. hamatus, as is typical for Antarctic fish, probably spawns a single batch of oocytes once a year. In addition, vitellogenesis is a slow process that extends over at least 1 year. Discrepancies between the macroscopic and histological appearance of gonads were found. These were associated mainly with spent and resting females (maturity stages 5 and 2, respectively). This study demonstrates the importance of histological analysis of gonads in order to confirm the results of the macroscopic analyses routinely carried out in studies of reproductive biology. This is of particular importance in determining size at maturity and spawning stock biomass, for assessment purposes.  相似文献

A method is described for the assessment of fecundity in mormyrid fish. In all species examined a tri-modal egg size distribution was found in the mature pre-spawning ovary. These modes represented one oocyte and two ova components. The significance of the presence of two sizes of ovum is discussed in relation to breeding periodicity in Hippopotamyrus pictus . Size and age at first maturity are estimated for this species. The probable effects of the formation of the lake on the breeding behaviour of mormyrids is discussed.  相似文献

Reproductive traits of Oxyurichthys tentacularis, a most demanded fish in Ashtamudi Lake, S. India were studied from samples collected using gill net, cast net and dip net during 2013–2015. Sexes were separated by observing the urogenital papilla in males and the gonads. Five maturity stages were identified by examining the gonads. Though advanced maturity stages were encountered throughout the year, higher preponderance of ripe gonads was discernible during August to November and February to April. Gonadosomatic indices indicated same trend in both sexes. The length at first maturity was 86.67 mm in males and 80.17 mm in females. The absolute fecundity ranged from 5,112 (102 mm TL) to 52,431(175 mm TL). Fecundity established linear relationships with total length, body weight and ovary weight. Ova diameter studies revealed that spawning takes place in batches at regular intervals and the species is a multiple spawner. The ratio of males to females was found to be 1:0.7 (χ2 = 10.8; p < 0.05). The pooled average for the whole period showed a perceptible dominance of male population in all of the months except in January (χ= 2.3; p > 0.05) could be observed.  相似文献

Reproductive aspects and information on the effect of fishery activities over this species stock are scarce, despite the imperative need of effective protection and resource management programs. To support the possible establishment of closed seasons and catch levels for the area, our study aimed to evaluate the spawning season of the Golden snapper (Lutjanus inermis). For this, fish caught by artisanal fisheries in the Navidad, Tenacatita and Chamela bays (Jalisco, Mexico) were sampled monthly from 1999-2008, and analyzed sex ratios, spawning season and size at first maturity. A total of 311 (53.1%) females and 275 (46.9%) males were caught, and the observed sex ratio was 1:0.88. The total length range was 14.4-37.0cm and total weight range from 48-575g. The length at first maturity was 23.9cm TL for females and 23.6cm TL for males. The gonadosomatic index showed two principal reproductive periods in the year (February-April and September-November), when the largest number of mature gonads were observed. Ovaries were of asynchronic development type and seven oocyte development stages were identified. Testicles showed lobular development and spermatozoa were observed in the center of the cysts and in the collecting ducts. It is important to mention that our results support the current suitable exploitation of this species in the area.  相似文献

Non‐lethal sampling techniques were used to document the reproductive structure of the shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum) population at a fish aggregation site (near Bordentown, New Jersey) in the Delaware River. A total of 68 fish were captured using gill nets (100 × 1.8 m, 12.7 or 15.2 cm mesh) and examined laparoscopically in May–June, and 61 additional fish captured and examined in November during 2006–2011. Six stages of reproductive development were identified in females and five stages were identified in males, encompassing differentiation through maturity in both sexes. Fish captured in the spring were predominantly immature with a higher proportion of females (1 : 1.2 M : F sex ratio), while mature males predominated in the autumn (5.7 : 1 M : F), indicating that the Bordentown area serves as an overwintering/pre‐spawn aggregation site. Three distinct forms of intersex were noted in gonads of 11.6% of fish examined: ovo‐testis, consisting of scattered spermatic cysts in predominantly immature ovary (3.9%); testis‐ova, consisting of ovarian lamellae projecting from a predominantly immature testes (4.7%); and zonal distribution, consisting of multiple, nearly‐homogenous pockets of either testicular or ovarian tissues along the gonad (3%). The hormone profile in fish with ovo‐testis was similar to that of immature males, while the hormone profile in fish with testis‐ova was similar to that of immature females. The relatively high prevalence of intersex raises concerns regarding potential reproductive effects and long‐term impacts on shortnose sturgeon in the Delaware River.  相似文献

Diodon holocanthus is an important economic and ecological species of the demersal fish community, caught as bycatch from local shrimp fishery. The reproductive biology of this long-spine porcupinefish has not yet been described, and reproductive season, the sex ratio, length distribution, length at first gonad maturity, and the gonad macro and microscopic features are described. A total of 400 organisms, ranging from 5.0 to 40.3 cm (average 18.4 cm) total length, were caught from the continental shelf of the Central Mexican Pacific, from December 1995 and December 1998. Sex ratio was 1:0.86 females to males (n = 253). The length at which 50% of the individuals showed maturing gonads was 19.7 cm for females and 20.1 cm for males. Length of the smallest organism with ripe gonads was 12.2 cm for females and 13 cm for males. Four gonadal maturation stages were found in both sexes, and five oocyte development phases were identified. The oocyte development pattern is of asynchronous type, which means the species can reproduce several times a year. Testicle development is lobular type, as in most teleost fishes. Monthly mean values of the gonad-somatic index suggest the reproduction activity peaks in June, and September-December.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine gonadal maturity in male and female vimba after induced spawning in the years 2001 throughout 2004, based on spawners derived from an anadromous population obtained from the Barycz River. For these 4 years, fry derived from each successive spawning were raised in carp ponds at the Experimental Hatchery Centre of the Polish Angling Association in Szczodre, Poland. In February 2005, gonads were collected from males and females and their maturity determined after histological preparations. Additionally, in females the diameters of oocytes undergoing trophoplasmic growth were determined and compared. Histological analysis showed that all females had gonads at maturity stage IV, except the youngest fish, in which maturity stage I was determined. It was also shown that the size of oocytes undergoing trophoplasmic growth was related to age: the older the females, the greater the proportion of large‐diameter oocytes. In addition, some 2‐year‐old females had a considerable proportion of oocytes undergoing trophoplasmic growth despite being at stage IV of ovarian maturity. Among males, 2‐ to 4‐year‐olds had gonads at maturity stage III, in which the spermatogenesis process was active. One‐year‐old males had testes at maturity stage II, with visible spermatogonia entering meiotic divisions. When keeping vimba under pond conditions, only 2 years are needed to obtain a mature spawner from a spawning school. The older the school, the higher the probability that a greater number of spawners will enter spawning.  相似文献

Gonadal development, maturation, spawning and hermaphroditism were investigated in captive blackspot sea bream, Pagellus bogaraveo Brünnich, 1768, during the second, third and fourth years of life. The gonads of 224 fish were examined macroscopically and histologically. Undifferentiated gonads were found in fish smaller than 22.0 cm. Adult fish showed four gonadal differentiations: ovotestes with functional testis and quiescent ovary (Mf), ovotestes with functional ovary and regressed testis (mF), ovotestes with both ovary and testis at a resting stage (mf), and ovaries with no male tissue (F). The overall incidence of gonochoric females F was 41%. Functional males Mf were more frequent in age classes 1+ and 2+, whereas functional females mF predominated in the 3+ age class, above 25.0 cm TL. Histological examination revealed testicular degeneration and atrophy in functional females mF. On the basis of both histological data as well as size and age frequency distribution, it is suggested that the reproductive strategy of P. bogaraveo in captivity is characterized by protandrous hermaphroditism, with a high incidence of female gonochorism. Spawning occurred in March–April, at a size of 28.0 cm and age 3 in males and at 29.5 cm and age 4 in females. The gonosomatic index (GSI) remained constantly low (≤ 0.05) throughout the second and third years of life. A significant increase in GSI was noted in both males and females at the accomplishment of the fourth year of life, coinciding with the spawning season. The results are compared with information available on wild P. bogaraveo and discussed with a view to a possible exploitation of this species in aquaculture, through a reliable control of reproduction.  相似文献

Tilapia nilotica reaches maturity in the first year of life; females mature shortly before males (11·4 and 14·3 cm in length). The distinctive morphological features of the different stages of development of the gonads are characterized. The sex ratio varied in populations of different age (size)-groups: a ratio of 2·81:1 and 0·47:1 (females:males) was obtained in populations of young and old fish. In medium-sized populations the sexes were equally abundant. There is evidence that females breed more than once a season. Fecundity varied more with body length ( r =0·860) and weight ( r =0·806) than with age ( r =0·604). These variations were of the order of 2·02; 0·83 and 0·83 exponentials of length, weight and age, respectively.  相似文献

The eel goby Taenioides cirratus (Blyth, 1,860) is a small fish inhabits muddy bottoms of brackish-water in the Indo-West Pacific. It has invaded many inland freshwater lakes in China, such as the Chaohu Lake, Gaoyou Lake and Nansi Lake, and its population increased rapidly in these freshwater lakes in recent years. The age, growth and reproductive traits of T. cirratus invading the Chaohu Lake were studied. A total of 482 specimens (210 females, 204 males and 68 juveniles) with total length (TL) ranging from 9.4 to 20.6 cm were collected using the benthic fyke nets at monthly intervals from March 2018 to February 2019. The sagittal otolith was used for age determination. Monthly variation of marginal increment ratio indicated that the annual forming of opaque band on sagittal otolith was completed during March and April. For both sexes, only four (from 0+ to 3+ years) age groups were observed and 1+ and 2+ years age individuals dominated the population. Back calculated length at age showed males grew faster than females. Both sexes reached maturity at 1+ year age and the TL at first maturity (TL50) was 12.6 cm for females and 11.9 cm for males. Monthly variation of gonado-somatic index indicated that the spawning occurred from May to August. The fecundity ranged from 967 ova to 5,114 ova, with a mean of 3,205 ova. Our study provides a comprehensive data on the key life history traits of T. cirratus for the first time.  相似文献

Some observations on the biology of Mastacembelus armatus (Lacepède) from Muzaffarnagar (U.P., India) have been made during the period July 1966 to June 1969. At a particular stage of maturity of the fish there is a close relationship between the gonad weight and the body weight which helps in determining the breeding period of the fish. Both male and female fishes mature simultaneously. The gonad weight influences the relative condition, while the visceral weight does not exert any significant effect on it. The development of the female gonads greatly affect the curve of relative condition, more than the development of male gonads, though the curve for male fish also shows a steady rise and fall in the seasonal variations of the relative condition. Seasonal fluctuations in relative condition correspond to its spawning season. In M. armatus , the presence of two peaks in the curve confirm two breeding seasons. The present studies have also elucidated to a certain extent the important aspect of the maturation and spawning habits of M. armatus in North India. The fish has two breeding seasons of short duration during June and July and again in November. The mature ovaries of each season contain slight maturing ova of next season along with mature ova of the present season. The entire stock of ova measuring 0.16 mm and above are shed during spawning.  相似文献

This study examined the endocrine and reproductive correlates of reproduction in 636 female and 468 male draughtboard sharks (Cephaloscyllium laticeps) captured from southeastern Australia. Females were oviparous and displayed a single external-type ovary with a maximum follicle diameter of 35 mm. Vitellogenesis commenced at a follicle diameter of 10 mm. Females showed a constant overlap between follicular recruitment, ovarian growth, and egg laying. The male reproductive tract consisted of paired testes with spermatocysts undergoing diametric development. Plasma levels of the presumptive gonadal steroids, testosterone (T), 17beta-estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT; males only) were correlated with morphological developmental stages of the gonads. In females, E2 increased as the follicle developed before declining as the follicle reached maturity. T remained low during the first stages of ovarian growth and increased as the follicle reached maturity. P4 showed a peak just before ovulation. In males, T was the only hormone that varied with maturity, increasing in adults; E2 and P4 were present at low plasma concentrations in males and did not change with stage of gonadal development. 11-KT was undetectable at all times. Endocrine changes in draughtboard sharks were consistent with hormonal correlates reported for other species and suggest roles for E2( in females) and T (in both sexes) in gametogenesis and P4 in maturational events in females.  相似文献

Size composition and reproductive cycle of Pseudupeneus grandisquamis (Pisces: Mullidae) in the Central Mexican Pacific. From June 1995 to December 1998 we used shrimp trawl nets to capture 492 Pseudupeneus grandisquamis in soft-bottom grounds off the central Mexican Pacific (Jalisco and Colima). The ength-weight ratio indicates allometric growth (p = 0.0035L(3.46) y r2 = 0.97). The total sex ratio was 1:1.15 (females: males). Mean total length was 153.8 mm (range 77-236 mm). A progression in length was found: the highest means were observed at the end of 1996 and during 1997. The mean length of females (162 mm) was longer than in males (150 mm). Four gonadic maturity stages were observed in both sexes; in females the most frequently stage was stage IV (mature gonads, 48.6%), while in males it was stage III (gonads in maturation, 45.0%). Seven microscopic oocyte development stages were identified. Oocyte development seems to be asynchronous. The mature testicle showed sperm inside the lobular lumen and in the duct. The highest values of the gonadosomatic index, as well as the largest percentages of individuals with mature gonads (at macroscopic and microscopic levels), were observed during winter and summer, suggesting that this species has two reproduction peaks by year. The length at which 50% of the individuals show gonads in maturation (L50) was 183 mm for the females and 181 mm for the males.  相似文献

The reproductive activities of the silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen), in Kuwait waters were investigated from March 1996 to February 1998. Observations on the seasonal distribution of maturity stages and variations in seasonal fluctuations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) confirmed recent findings that the spawning period begins in May. The species has a prolonged spawning period in the females extending from May to August, whereas the males mature in April and ripe specimens were encountered in monthly samples until September. The recruitment pattern confirmed the one breeding season. There are two spawning peaks, the first in May and the second in August. Variations in GSI relative to fish length indicated that females and males are most fecund at about 24.5–26.4 cm and 20.5–22.4 cm length classes, respectively. The males mature earlier than females, at a minimum size of 12.5–14.4 cm, while the females mature at 20.5–22.4 cm. The oocyte diameter‐frequency distribution suggests a serial rhythm of spawning. Fecundity ranged from 28 965 to 455 661 and correlated positively with: (a) standard length (P < 0.006); (b) ovary weight (P < 0.001); and (c) body weight (P < 0.001), and negatively with egg size (P < 0.003).  相似文献

From June 2004 to May 2006, the reproductive biology of the blue runner Caranx crysos was studied in the Gulf of Gabes (Southern Tunisia). Of 1668 individuals examined, 777 were females (46.6%) and 891 were males (53.4%). The sex ratio significantly deviated in favour of males (♀:♂ = 0.87 : 1). The difference in the numbers of females and males was significant among size‐classes. However, there was no significant difference between sexes over months and seasons. Monthly changes in the Gonado‐Somatic Index (GSI) showed a rapid increase during summer to very high levels in July (3.51% for males and 2.55% for females) and August (3.47% for males and 2.59% for females) before declining sharply in September (0.58% for females and 0.38% for males). The gametogenesis activity began with a pre‐maturation phase, from 20 May to the first 10 days of July, followed by a pre‐spawning phase, from 20 July to 20 August. From the last 10 days of August to 20 September the gonads were in the ripe and spawning stages. From the end of September to early May, gonads were in the post‐spawning and resting stages. The size at which 50% of the population reached sexual maturity was significantly different in males and females: males attained sexual maturity at fork length FL50 = 210.20, whereas females attained maturity at FL50 = 222.3 mm. Age at maturity was 2.4 years for males and 2.8 years for females.  相似文献

Gonad development of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus in two volcanic crater  lake  habitats (Sampaloc Lake, Taal Lake) in south Luzon, Philippines was examined during the annual reproductive cycle. The minimum body size‐at‐maturity of fish in these two lake habitats was also compared. Four gonad development stages were characterized as basis for the classification of ovarian (immature, maturing, mature, spawned) and testicular maturation (immature, maturing, mature) phases. The occurrence of all development stages in individual gonads suggest an asynchronous development whereby advanced stages are recruited continuously from a pool of younger stage germ cells to result in elevated female and male GSI throughout the annual cycle due to active gonadogenesis. Together with the increasing occurrence of advanced stage oocytes and spermatozoa from March until October, the elevated GSI of fish may indicate peak gonadal growth during the onset of the dry season (December–January) for eventual spawning from the beginning (May–June) until the end of the wet season (October–November). In both lake habitats, male fish were smaller than females but, regardless of sex, the minimum size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake was significantly smaller than fish in Taal Lake. Overall, asynchronous development during oogenesis and spermatogenesis allows for year‐round reproduction of silver therapon, with elevated gonad growth in the dry season in preparation for spawning during the wet season. Compared with fish in Taal Lake, a smaller size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake may be a response of the wild fishery stock to long‐term high fishing mortality and degradation of the lake habitat.  相似文献
