A data acquisition method for recording the relative position of the landmarks in dental casts, photographs or xerox prints, has been devised. Essentially it consists of a modified comparator and a decimal converter connected to an IBM key punch. This method of recording the landmarks independently, permits any measurement such as size of the teeth, arch width and length, perimeter, spacing and crowding, changes of displaced and rotated teeth to be derived by programming the computer. Measurement errors were studied for accuracy of equipment, reorientation of dental casts, validity of measurements between different instruments and reproducibility of landmark location.  相似文献

Anatomical dissections were done to show the innervation of the teeth and mandible of the bottlenosed dolphin (Turslops truncatus). Using structural landmarks, a method has been devised for anesthetizing the lower jaw. With this procedure teeth can be extracted and age determined by counting dentine layers in sections of etched teeth. Animals of the most desirable ages can thus be selected and the ages of animals already in captivity can be determined.  相似文献

The subfamily Gobioninae is a subgroup in the specious fish family Cyprinidae, which bears high diversity in morphological and ecological dimensions and has its most components distributed in East Asia. In this study, the pharyngeal bones and teeth of 39 species belonging to 19 genera of the Gobioninae were examined, with the phylogenetic comparative method (PCM) and correlation methods employed to analyze the character evolution. Three characters on pharyngeal bones (shape of the pharyngeal bones, extension for attachment of the pharyngo-cleithralis internus posterior (PCIP) muscle, and teeth-bearing area) and six characters of pharyngeal teeth (shape of the five teeth in the main row, number of rows of the teeth) were identified and compared. When the character states were mapped on a molecular phylogenetic tree, it was found that, to adapt to different masticatory operations, different Gobioninae species have various morphological types of pharyngeal bones and teeth: some have intermediate pharyngeal bones bearing multiple rows of diverse teeth (conical, coarsely compressed, and compressed), others have broad pharyngeal bones bearing a single row of molar teeth, and still others have narrow pharyngeal bones bearing a single row of extremely compressed teeth. Tests on the phylogenetic signal and evolutionary associations revealed that evolution of the examined characters was all phylogenetically constrained and correlated. Owing to the homoplasy in evolution, it was suggested that the conventional method of using pharyngeal bones and teeth for phylogenetic reconstruction of cyprinid fishes should not be encouraged.  相似文献

Geometric morphometric methods rely on the accurate identification and quantification of landmarks on biological specimens. As in any empirical analysis, the assessment of inter- and intra-observer error is desirable. A review of methods currently being employed to assess measurement error in geometric morphometrics was conducted and three general approaches to the problem were identified. One such approach employs Generalized Procrustes Analysis to superimpose repeatedly digitized landmark configurations, thereby establishing whether repeat measures fall within an acceptable range of variation. The potential problem of this error assessment method (the "Pinocchio effect") is demonstrated and its effect on error studies discussed. An alternative approach involves employing Euclidean distances between the configuration centroid and repeat measures of a landmark to assess the relative repeatability of individual landmarks. This method is also potentially problematic as the inherent geometric properties of the specimen can result in misleading estimates of measurement error. A third approach involved the repeated digitization of landmarks with the specimen held in a constant orientation to assess individual landmark precision. This latter approach is an ideal method for assessing individual landmark precision, but is restrictive in that it does not allow for the incorporation of instrumentally defined or Type III landmarks. Hence, a revised method for assessing landmark error is proposed and described with the aid of worked empirical examples.  相似文献

Diet is key to understanding the paleoecology of early hominins. We know little about the diets of these fossil taxa, however, in part because of a limited fossil record, and in part because of limitations in methods available to infer their feeding adaptations. This paper applies a new method, dental topographic analysis, to the inference of diet from fossil hominin teeth. This approach uses laser scanning to generate digital 3D models of teeth and geographic information systems software to measure surface attributes, such as slope and occlusal relief. Because it does not rely on specific landmarks that change with wear, dental topographic analysis allows measurement and comparison of variably worn teeth, greatly increasing sample sizes compared with techniques that require unworn teeth. This study involved comparison of occlusal slope and relief of the lower second molars of Australopithecus afarensis (n=15) and early Homo (n=8) with those of Gorilla gorilla gorilla (n=47) and Pan troglodytes troglodytes (n=54). Results indicate that while all groups show reduced slope and relief in progressively more worn specimens, there are consistent differences at given wear stages among the taxa. Early Homo shows steeper slopes and more relief than chimpanzees, whereas A. afarensis shows less slope and relief than any of the other groups. The differences between the two hominin taxa are on the same order as those between the extant apes, suggesting similar degrees of difference in diet. Because these chimpanzees and gorillas differ mostly in fallback foods where they are sympatric, results suggest that the early hominins may likewise have differed mostly in fallback foods, with A. afarensis emphasizing harder, more brittle foods, and early Homo relying on tougher, more elastic foods.  相似文献

An analysis of a reordering operator on a GA-hard problem   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper analyzes the performance of a genetic algorithm that combines reproduction, crossover, and a reordering operator. Reordering operators have often been suggested as one way to avoid thecoding traps — the combinations of loose linkage and deception among important, lower order schemata — of fixed codings. The analysis confirms this role and suggests directions for further research.  相似文献

Restriction Landmark Genomic Scanning (RLGS) profiles, which are based on the concept of using restriction enzyme sites as landmarks and are generated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, were applied to the analysis of plant genomes. This study identified landmark enzymes in RLGS profiles of rice, tobacco, and arabidopsis, because the success of RLGS analysis depends on finding useful landmarks and these are the most frequently studied higher plants. As the results demonstrate, in each plant RLGS analysis various landmark enzymes were identified as useful landmark enzymes. However, the number of spots in a single profile was smaller than in mouse RLGS profiles and differed remarkably in the various plants. In addition, we demonstrate the optimal electrophoresis conditions and a convenient spot-cloning method.  相似文献

Three‐dimensional geometric morphometric techniques have been widely used in quantitative comparisons of craniofacial morphology in humans and nonhuman primates. However, few anatomical landmarks can actually be defined on the neurocranium. In this study, an alternative method is proposed for defining semi‐landmarks on neurocranial surfaces for use in detailed analysis of cranial shape. Specifically, midsagittal, nuchal, and temporal lines were approximated using Bezier curves and equally spaced points along each of the curves were defined as semi‐landmarks. The shortest paths connecting pairs of anatomical landmarks as well as semi‐landmarks were then calculated in order to represent the surface morphology between landmarks using equally spaced points along the paths. To evaluate the efficacy of this method, the previously outlined technique was used in morphological analysis of sexual dimorphism in modern Japanese crania. The study sample comprised 22 specimens that were used to generate 110 anatomical semi‐landmarks, which were used in geometric morphometric analysis. Although variations due to sexual dimorphism in human crania are very small, differences could be identified using the proposed landmark placement, which demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed method. Trophic morphology plays a major role in niche diversification among the highly diverse fish fauna of coral reefs. It gives insight into feeding types and is useful in taxonomy, as it can be used to differentiate between species and to estimate phylogenetic relationships. The gobiid genus Gobiodon comprises obligate coral dwelling species that are widespread on Red Sea and Indo-Pacific reefs. Yet very little is known about their ecology and behaviour of feeding. In this study, viscerocranial and oral jaw morphology was investigated in seven species of Gobiodon that occur in the Red Sea. Osteological analyses were carried out on enzyme cleared and alizarin red stained specimens. Shape variation of the viscerocranium was analyzed using a landmark-based geometric morphometric method on digital scans of hand drawings and visualized in thin-plate splines. Shape was determined by placing landmarks on skeletal elements in their articulated state. Morphology of the dentary and premaxilla was examined in further detail after disarticulation. A combination of landmarks and semilandmarks was applied to digital photographs of the oral jaws. It was shown that orbit size influences viscerocranial morphology by delimiting the lower jaw articulation angle. The premaxilla differs both in its extent and direction of curvature and in the structure of the articular process. Form changes in the dentary are mainly caused by variation of curvature and depth. A significant relationship between oral jaw shape and the number of anterior rows of teeth was found. Morphological diversity of selected elements is used to generate hypotheses concerning the trophic biology and niche diversification of Gobiodon . Brief dietary and in situ behavioural observations were carried out to further develop and test hypotheses.  相似文献

A Chinese family is reported in which five generations have exhibited natal teeth and generalized multiple steatocystomas. This autosomal dominant condition is not similar to the two reported types of pachyonychia congenita, because nail lesions, palmoplantar keratosis and hyperhidrosis, follicular keratosis, and oral leukokeratosis were not observed. Therefore, it is suggested that this family exhibits a newly recognized syndrome.  相似文献

An oral squamous cell carcinoma which invaded maxillary bones with metastasis to the right retropharyngeal lymph node was diagnosed in a free-ranging California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) from Washington. Much of the maxillae had been replaced with tumor and reactive tissue, and many teeth were missing or loose. The tumor was predominantly confined to the shape of the maxillary bones and was unusual because it was bilaterally symmetrical.  相似文献

Casual observations have revealed that the anterior dentition of impala and other antelope is loosely embedded, with the tips of the teeth movable over a distance of 1middot;5 to 2mm. The comb-like anterior dentition of impala Aepyceros melampus is utilized extensively for grooming purposes, and it was hypothesized that the looseness of the teeth might be related to the grooming function. A sample of 12 impala mandibles was obtained from Pilanesberg National Park. Boputhatswana. Six of the incisor canine (IC) complexes were examined macroscopically, radiographically and histologically, while the remaining six were used to determine the alveolar depth relative to total root length, The findings were: (1) wide periodontal ligament spaces, most prominent in the apical region; (2) a loose, highly vascular periodontal ligament; (3) well-developed trans-septal periodontal ligament fibres; and (4) relatively shallow alveoli, with only approximately two-thirds of the roots included within the alveoli. In no case could looseness be ascribed to pathological changes in the periodontal ligament, cementum or alveolar bone. These features suggest that the looseness of the teeth is associated with a see-saw action of the teeth about a fulcrum below the alveolar bone crest. with the maintenance of the closed resting position of the teeth being facilitated by the well-developed trans-septal fibres. It is suggested that the minimal interdental space maintained by this arrangement during grooming assists in the efficient removal of parasites from the pelage by impala.  相似文献

Sampling experiments were performed to investigate mean square error and bias in estimates of mean shape produced by different geometric morphometric methods. The experiments use the isotropic error model, which assumes equal and independent variation at each landmark. The case of three landmarks in the plane (i.e., triangles) was emphasized because it could be investigated systematically and the results displayed on the printed page. The amount of error in the estimates was displayed as RMSE surfaces over the space of all possible configurations of three landmarks. Patterns of bias were shown as vector fields over this same space. Experiments were also performed using particular combinations of four or more landmarks in both two and three dimensions. It was found that the generalized Procrustes analysis method produced estimates with the least error and no pattern of bias. Averages of Bookstein shape coordinates performed well if the longest edge was used as the baseline. The method of moments (Stoyan, 1990, Model. Biomet. J. 32, 843) used in EDMA (Lele, 1993, Math. Geol. 25, 573) exhibits larger errors. When variation is not small, it also shows a pattern of bias for isosceles triangles with one side much shorter than the other two and for triangles whose vertices are approximately collinear causing them to resemble their own reflections. Similar problems were found for the log-distance method of Rao and Suryawanshi (1996, Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 95, 4121). These results and their implications for the application of different geometric morphometric methods are discussed.  相似文献

A cross‐sectional study of oral health and oral health‐related quality of life among frail elderly persons on admission to a special oral health care programme in Copenhagen City, Denmark Aim: To describe the oral health and the oral‐health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) of citizens in Copenhagen City on admission to a specific oral health‐care programme for disabled elderly persons. Further, to analyse how various factors influence the oral health and the OHRQoL among these patients. Methods: A cross‐sectional study of 189 persons (average 85 years) consecutively admitted to a special oral health‐care programme. Clinical data and data from interviews comprising social factors, life‐style, dental visit habits, oral hygiene practices and self‐perceived oral health were collected. A modified index on perceived dysfunction, discomfort and disability due to oral disorders was used. Results: Sixty‐eight per cent had natural teeth, among those 57% had decayed teeth and two out of three wore dentures. Smoking habits influence the number of teeth present and the OHRQoL (p < 0.05) of the patients. Edentulousness, decayed teeth, and presence of dentures did not seem to cause OHRQoL problems, while higher OHRQoL scores (more problems) were reported by those with 1–9 teeth and tooth mobility. Conclusion: OHRQoL of these patients can be increased by removal of loose teeth and provision of dentures to those with very few teeth rather than focus on traditional caries treatment.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2010.00412.x Chewing disability in older adults attributable to tooth loss and other oral conditions Background: This study evaluates associations between oral health‐related factors and chewing ability, and quantifies the risk contributed by each factor. Materials and methods: Chewing ability and information on number of teeth, dentures and dental problems over the last 12 months were collected by mailing questionnaires to a random sample of 60‐ to 71‐year‐olds from Adelaide, South Australia. Logistic regression was used to model oral status and oral symptoms as predictors of chewing disability, and to estimate the population‐attributable fraction. Results: A total of 444 persons responded (response rate = 68.8%). Among dentate subjects, 10.3% were chewing‐deficient, with chewing disability more prevalent (p < 0.05) among those with <21 teeth (26.4%), dentures (20.4%), painful aching in the mouth (25.4%), pain in the face (16.7%), broken/chipped teeth (15.6%), sensitive teeth (14.1%), loose teeth (37.1%), and sore gums (18.0%). Adjusted Odds ratios (OR) showed inadequate dentition (OR = 4.20), painful aching in the mouth (OR = 4.88), and presence of loose teeth (OR = 4.70) were associated with chewing disability (p < 0.01), and their population attributable fractions were 18.5%, 15.1% and 7.8% respectively. Conclusions: Loose teeth, number of teeth and pain in the mouth were associated with chewing disability, with an inadequate dentition and pain in the mouth contributing most to chewing disability in this population.  相似文献

Dental x-rays were taken of isolated and in situ adult molar teeth of the Krapina Neandertal (n = 63) and of recent and contemporary molars (n = 423). The radiographs were digitized at high resolution (1,024 × 1,520 × 8 bits) with a 35 mm solid state scanner. Ratios of enamel cap area to the underlying dentinal-pulpal area were determined and comparisons were made between average ratios for the Neandertal and contemporary molars. Neandertal molars had significantly smaller ratios than did contemporary teeth (P < 0.05). It is suggested that the smaller ratios represent relatively thinner enamel for Neandertals and that the thin enamel may have been caused by a metabolic depression that resulted in reduced enamel quantity (hypoplasia). Alternately, the observed differences may be related to expanded pulps seen in various stages of taurodontism. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We have developed a multiplex method of genome analysis, restriction landmark genomic scanning (RLGS) that has been used to construct genetic maps in mice. Restriction landmarks are end-labeled restriction fragments of genomic DNA that are separated by using high resolution, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis identifying as many as two thousand landmark loci in a single gel. Variation for several hundred of these loci has been identified between laboratory strains and between these strains and Mus spretus. The segregation of more than 1100 RLGS loci has been analyxed in recombinant inbred (RI) strains and in two separate interspecific genetic crosses. Genetic maps have been derived that link 1045 RLGS loci to reference loci on all of the autosomes and the X chromosome of the mouse genome. The RLGS method can be applied to genome analysis in many different organisms to identify genomic loci because it used end-labeling of restriction landmarks rather than probe hybridization. Different combinations of restriction enzymes yield different sets of RLGS loci providing expanded power for genetic mapping.  相似文献

Here we describe and evaluate a new method for quantifying long bone curvature using geometric morphometric and semi‐landmark analysis of the human femur. The technique is compared with traditional ways of measuring subtense and point of maximum curvature using either coordinate calipers or projection onto graph paper. Of the traditional methods the graph paper method is more reliable than using coordinate calipers. Measurement error is consistently lower for measuring point of maximum curvature than for measuring subtense. The results warrant caution when comparing data collected by the different traditional methods. Landmark data collection proves reliable and has a low measurement error. However, measurement error increases with the number of semi‐landmarks included in the analysis of curvature. Measurements of subtense can be estimated more reliably using 3D landmarks along the curve than using traditional techniques. We use equidistant semi‐landmarks to quantify the curve because sliding the semi‐landmarks masks the curvature signal. Principal components analysis of these equidistant semi‐landmarks provides the added benefit of describing the shape of the curve. These results are promising for functional and forensic analysis of long bone curvature in modern human populations and in the fossil record. A geometric morphometric analysis of families belonging to the Scarabaeoidea, using landmarks from three two-dimensional views (frontal, dorsal and lateral) of an internally situated rigid structure, the metendosternite, was carried out. Procrustes distances matrices were obtained to produce phenograms from the three analyses. Relative warp analyses were also performed and the first two relative warps for the three data sets plotted against each other. The metendosternite is an internally situated anatomical structure that has largely been neglected in past studies. However, it proved to be useful in geometric morphometric studies, because it is rigid and landmarks can be easily identified. Geometric morphometries is shown to be a powerful tool to identify phenetic relationships between higher level taxa, and the metendosternite is a new structure available for beetle systematisists.  相似文献
