Four Immunoglobulin gamma heavy chain isotypes are present in humans; the true phylogenetic relationship between the genes are not known because of the complex concerted evolution of the Ig multigene locus. Here we present data obtained from Southern blot analysis of the gamma genes in several primate species including prosimians (Lemur catta), New World Monkeys (Saguinus oedipus) and Old World Monkeys (Cercopitecus aethiops andMacaca fascicularis). Our data show the presence of a single IgG gene inLemur and probably inS.l oedipus, and of multiple genes in the two Cercopithecinae. These findings suggest that a single IgG gene was present in the ancestor of primates: we suppose that this IgG gene was later duplicated several times during primate evolution.  相似文献

Eight nonhuman primate species were compared in three experiments utilizing the oddity paradigm. The sample included 4 lemurs (Lemur catta), 26 Old World Monkeys (Macaca mulatta, M. nemestrina, M. speciosa, andCercopithecus nictitans) and 21 New World Monkeys (Cebus apella, Lagothrix humboldti andSaimiri sciurea). EveryS was first trained 60 days on “outside oddity” problems. Next,Ss solved “outside” oddity problems constituted from two short and two tall cylinders, and were tested for their perception of oddity withDavis andMcDonald's (1962) technique of varying the height of the centerplaced but nonreinforced stimulus. In the final experiment,Ss were given ambiguous oddity problems that could be solved either for form or color cues, andEs recorded preference. Cebus and woolly monkeys formed oddity learning sets as well as or better than any of the Macaque monkeys, but relatively poor performances were made by squirrel monkeys, spotnose monkeys, and lemurs. Woolly monkeys were outstandingly accurate in their perception of oddity based on changing stimulus height, no other species approaching them in this skill. Old World Monkeys were much more likely than New World Monkeys to use color as a cue.  相似文献

Growth data from a number of species of Old and New World primates have been analyzed by calculating instantaneous relative growth rates. Species discussed are the New World species Saimiri sciureus and Saguinus nigricollis, and the Old World species Pan troglodytes and Macaca mulatta. The analysis of the perinatal growth data indicated that differences in relative growth rates are present during early periods of growth. More specifically, it was found that the closer taxonomically a species is to man the greater the deceleration of growth during the first postnatal year. It is suggested that this may be a general primate trend.  相似文献

Allometric analysis of maxillary postcanine tooth area (Y) compared to adult skull length (X) in 34 species of higher primates has revealed a very close relationship. The derived least squares equation is logY=2.223 logX−2.311 with a correlation coefficient of .98. The value of 2.223 for the allometric coefficient suggests that tooth area may be in part related to the amount of food ingested. Although most of the species examined fit this equation very closely, several could be identified as being slightly deviant. In general, the direction of this deviance can be related to known dietary preferences. Relatively large molars are found in leaf-eaters (Alouatta, Presbytis, Colobus) and in the grass and seed eatingTheropithecus. Relatively small molars are found in primates with insectivorous preferences (Cebuella, Callithrix, Saguinus, andSaimiri) and in one frugivore (Ateles). The suggestion is made that the amount of mastication required by the preferred food is one factor in determining the most adaptive tooth size.  相似文献

Among the North American species of Linum there are three basic chromosome numbers representing invasions from the Old World of three distinct evolutionary lines. N = 9 is found only in the blue-flowered group represented in North America by two species, L. lewisii and L. pratense which are closely related to and may be conspecific with the Old World L. perenne. The basic number for the yellow-flowered species is n = 18 which is characteristic of the Scabrella and Virginiana subgroups. The loss of chromosomes in the Neo-mexicana (n = 13) and Sulcata-Rigida (n = 15) subgroups suggests that the basic haploid number of 18 might be a polyploid derivative of an Old World ancestor with n = 9. The incidence of n = 9 among Old World species of Linum may indicate that this represents an ancestral condition. Linum catharticum has n = 8; this number and features of morphology and distribution suggest that it is not directly related to either the blue-flowered or yellow-flowered groups in North America but represents a separate introduction on this continent.  相似文献

The distribution of the human endogenous retrovirus (HERV)-K genome was investigated by Southern-blot analyses using a HERV-K-env DNA probe. With the exception of one DNA-sample, obtained from a Chinese individual in whom an amplification of HERV-K was detected, Southern-blot analyses yielded identical hybridization patterns with DNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes of 37 normal healthy blood donors, with DNA from six tumor cell lines, or with 23 DNA samples prepared from various carcinoma tissues. To elucidate whether the integration of HERV-K genomes into the primate lineage occurred as a single event or as an integration with later expansion, we further examined the evolutionary history of HERV-K by Southern blot analyses with DNA samples from different primate species. We detected HERV-K genomes in Macaca mulatta and Macaca silenus, which represent Old World monkeys, but not in prosimians (Galago demidovii) and New World monkeys, represented by Saguinus fuscicollis, Saguinus oedipus, and Calliihrix iacchus. Thus, we assume that the infection of the primate lineage with HERV-K had occurred after the divergence of New World and Old World monkeys, but before the evolutionary expansion of large hominoids. In contrast to the apparent lack of HERV-Kenv sequences in DNA from tissue of the New World monkey Saguinus oedipus (cotton-top marmoset), we found HERV-K-DNA in the B95-8 cell-line, which is a Saguinus oedipus leukocyte cell-line, immortalized in vitro by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cultivated in human cells. It may be speculated that HERV-K-DNA or HERV-K-particles were introduced into these cells during in vitro transformation with EBV.  相似文献

Nonhuman primates express varying responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis: New World monkeys appear to be resistant to tuberculosis (TB) while Old World monkeys seem to be particularly susceptible. The aim of this study was to elucidate the presence of the regulatory guanine–thymine (GT) repeat polymorphisms in intron 2 of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) associated with the development of TB in humans and to determine any variations in these microsatellite polymorphisms in primates. We sequenced the region encompassing the regulatory GT repeat microsatellites in intron 2 of TLR2 in 12 different nonhuman primates using polymerase chain reaction amplification, TA cloning, and automatic sequencing. The nonhuman primates included for this study were as follows: chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), bonobo (Pan paniscus), gorilla (Gorilla gorilla), orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), Celebes ape (Macaca nigra), rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta), pigtail macaque (Macaca nemestrina), patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas), spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), Woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha), tamarin (Saguinus labiatus), and ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta). Nucleotide sequences encompassing the regulatory GT repeat region are similar across species and are completely conserved in great apes. However, Old World monkeys lack GT repeats altogether, while New World monkeys and ring-tailed lemurs have much more complex structures around the position of the repeats. In conclusion, the genetic structures encompassing the regulatory GT repeats in intron 2 of human TLR2 are similar among nonhuman primates. The sequence is most conserved in New World monkeys and less in Old World monkeys.  相似文献

Little research has been directed towards the examination of ingestive behaviors in wild primates. This paper describes a naturalistic study of anterior tooth use in four sympatric anthropoid species: Hylobates lar, Macaca fascicularis, Pongo pygmaeus, and Presbytis thomasi. Instantaneous group scan data were collected during nearly 1,800 hours of observation between August 1990 and July 1991 at the Ketambe Research Station in the Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia. Ingestive behaviors are documented for specific food items and compared among the primate taxa. Results indicate significant differences among the species in preferred methods of food ingestion. These differences are related in part to dietary differences, and in part to other aspects of each primate's biology and ecology. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The primary molars and the first permanent molars of two Asian cercopithecoid species, Macaca mulatta and Macaca speciosa, were statistically described. Sexual dimorphism was not found related to tooth dimensions nor was there a significant difference between the right and the left sides. Generally, the teeth of Macaca mulatta were found to be larger than those of Macaca speciosa, and that this difference was significant for most tooth measurements. The discriminant function analysis reveals that the two species may be distinguished by tooth dimensions alone except in the dimensional range where over-lapping is expected.  相似文献

We have investigated, by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), the cytogenetic evolution of the Y chromosome in primates using 17 yeast artificial chromosomes, representative of the Y-specific euchromatic region of the human chromosome Y. The FISH experiments were performed on great apes (Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Gorilla gorilla and Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus), and on two Old World monkeys species as an outgroup (Cercopitecidae Macaca fascicularis and Papio anubis). The results showed that this peculiar chromosome has undergone rapid and unconstrained evolution both in sequence content and organization. Although interspecific differences in the relative development of molar occlusal features have been documented for most primate species, wear-related changes in these features are only beginning to be understood. In the present study, the notch between the metaconid and entoconid of M2 was examined in a skeletal sample of Macaca fascicularis, Presbytis cristatus, and Presbytis rubicunda from the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. Photogrammetric analyses yielded X, Y, and Z coordinates that were used to compute three angular measurements and two length measurements at the lingual notch. Statistical analyses of measurements from unworn dentitions indicated that the mesial slope of the entoconid is steeper than the distal slope of the metaconid in all three species. In addition, interspecific comparisons demonstrated that P. cristatus has the steepest lingual notch bordered by the largest molar shearing crests, while P. rubicunda and M. fascicularis have molar shearing crests of similar size, with P. rubicunda merely having higher cusps that are closer together than those of M. fascicularis. Fanally, P. cristatus shows a smaller decrease in lingual cusp relief with wear than M. fascicularis, while P. cristatus and P. rubicunda probably show similar decreases in lingual cusp relief with wear. The differences in wear-related changes in lingual cusp relief between M. fascicularis and P. cristatus may well be related to the frugivorous/folivorous dietary differences between these species.  相似文献

Evidence for Gondwanan vicariance in an ancient clade of gecko lizards   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Aim Geckos (Reptilia: Squamata), due to their great age and global distribution, are excellent candidates to test hypotheses of Gondwanan vicariance against post‐Gondwanan dispersal. Our aims are: to generate a phylogeny of the sphaerodactyl geckos and their closest relatives; evaluate previous phylogenetic hypotheses of the sphaerodactyl geckos with regard to the other major gecko lineages; and to use divergence date estimates to inform a biogeographical scenario regarding Gondwanan relationships and assess the roles of vicariance and dispersal in shaping the current distributions of the New World sphaerodactyl geckos and their closest Old World relatives. Location Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, Atlantic Ocean. Methods We used parsimony and partitioned Bayesian methods to analyse data from five nuclear genes to generate a phylogeny for the New World sphaerodactyl geckos and their close Old World relatives. We used dispersal–vicariance analysis to determine ancestral area relationships among clades, and divergence times were estimated from the phylogeny using nonparametric rate smoothing. Results We recovered a monophyletic group containing the New World sphaerodactyl genera, Coleodactylus, Gonatodes, Lepidoblepharis, Pseudogonatodes and Sphaerodactylus, and the Old World Gekkotan genera Aristelliger, Euleptes, Quedenfeldtia, Pristurus, Saurodactylus and Teratoscincus. The dispersal–vicariance analysis indicated that the ancestral area for this clade was North Africa and surrounding regions. The divergence between the New World spaherodactyl geckos and their closest Old World relative was estimated to have occurred c. 96 Myr bp . Main conclusions Here we provide the first molecular genetic phylogenetic hypothesis of the New World sphaerodactyl geckos and their closest Old World relatives. A combination of divergence date estimates and dispersal–vicariance analysis informed a biogeographical scenario indicating that the split between the sphaerodactyl geckos and their African relatives coincided with the Africa/South America split and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. We resurrect the family name Sphaerodactylidae to represent the expanded sphaerodactyl clade.  相似文献

Although there have been few studies of self‐scratching in primates, some have reported distinct differences in whether hands or feet are used, and these variations seem to reflect the evolutionary history of the Order. Monkeys and prosimians use both hands and feet to self‐scratch while African great apes use hands almost exclusively. Gibbons represent an evolutionary divergence between monkeys and great apes and incidental observations at the Gibbon Conservation Center pointed to a difference in self‐scratching among the four extant gibbon genera (Hoolock, Nomascus, Symphalangus, and Hylobates). To validate and further explore these preliminary observations, we collected systematic data on self‐scratching from 32 gibbons, including nine species and all four genera. To supplement gibbon data, we also collected self‐scratching information from 18 great apes (four species), five prosimians (two species), 26 New World Monkeys (nine species) and 20 Old World Monkeys (seven species). All monkeys and some prosimians used both hands and feet to self‐scratch, whereas one prosimian species used only feet. All African great apes used hands exclusively (orangutans were an exception displaying occasional foot‐use). This appears to represent a fundamental difference between monkeys and great apes in limb use. Interestingly, there was a clear difference in self‐scratching between the four gibbon genera. Hylobates and Symphalangus self‐scratched only with hands (like all African great apes), while Hoolock and Nomascus self‐scratched with both hands and feet (like monkeys and prosimians). This difference in gibbon behavior may reflect the evolutionary history of gibbons as Hoolock and Nomascus are thought to have evolved before both Hylobates and Symphalangus. What evolutionary pressures led to this divergent pattern is currently opaque; however, this shift in limb preference may result from niche separation across the order facilitating differences in the behavioral repertoire associated with hind and forelimbs. The occurrence of twins in arboreal Old World monkeys and apes is extremely rare. A wild adult femalePresbytis melalophos, however, gave birth to female twins. This stimulated many patterns of behaviour which were rare or absent when single infants were born. Allomothering increased greatly and maltreatment of twins by allomothers was common, even though this was never observed with single infants. Results indicate that the amount of allomothering inP. melalophos is normally controlled by the mother rather than by potential allomothers. The behaviour of the twins also differed from that of single infants. Except when they were taken by allomothers, the twins moved away from their mother much less than did single infants by their second month of life.  相似文献

A palynological survey, including LM, SEM and TEM is presented for eight genera, nine species and 76 samples of the Monotropoideae which is composed of 10 genera and 13 species. On the basis of the aperture number and shape, the following six pollen types are recognized: 1) 3-colp(oroid) ate—Allotropa, 2) 2-colpor(oid)ate—Monotropsis andHemitomes, 3) 4-colpor(oid)ate—Pterospora, Sarcodes andPleuricospora, 4) 2- and 3-colpor(oid)ate—Monotropa hypopitys, 5) 3-colporate and-porate —Monotropa uniflora, 6) 3- to 4- porate—Monotropastrum humile. Relationships among taxa within the Monotropoideae are illustrated on the palynological characters including the aperture type, exine sculpture and structure. Both pollen grains with two and four apertures have evolved independently from pollen grains with three apertures, according to the infraspecific variation of aperture numbers and the usual occurrence of three-aperturate pollen grains in the Ericaceae. 3-colp(oroid)ate pollen ofAllotropa is the most primitive and occupies an isolated position in the subfamily, on the other hand 3- to 4-porate pollen ofMonotropastrum humile is most advanced in the subfamily, probably even in the Ericaceae. A reduced sexine inMonotropastrum humile appears to be a specialized pollen character. Infraspecific geographical difference in palynological characters is revealed in two species ofMonotropa for the first time.M. hypopitys is basically characterized by pollen grains with two apertures in the New World vs. three apertures in the Old World.M. uniflora is basically characterized by 3-porate pollen in the New World vs. 3-colporate in the Old World. In both species pollen grains with more primitive characters usually occur in the Old World.  相似文献
