Advanced, multidimensional models are typically applied when researching processes occurring in the nearshore. Relatively simple, empirical equations are commonly used in coastal engineering practice in order to estimate extreme wave run-up on beaches and coastal structures. However, they were mostly calibrated to the characteristics of oceanic coasts, which have different wave regime than a semi-enclosed basin like the Baltic Sea. In this paper we apply the formulas to the Polish Baltic Sea coast. The equations were adjusted to match local conditions in two test sites in Międzyzdroje and Dziwnówek, where beaches are under continuous video surveillance. Data from WAM wave model and coastal gauge stations were used, as well as precise measurements of the beaches'' cross-sections. More than 600 run-up events spanning from June to December 2013 were analysed, including surges causing dune erosion. Extreme wave run-up R2% was calculated and presented as a percentage value indicating what part of the beach was inundated. The method had a root-mean-square error of 6.1 and 6.5 percentage points depending on the test site. We consider it is a fast and computationally undemanding alternative to morphodynamic models. It will constitute a part of the SatBałtyk Operating System-Shores, delivering forecasts of wave run-up on the beaches for the entire Polish coastline. 相似文献

The chemical composition of 48 leaf oil samples isolated from individual plants of Cleistopholis patens (Benth .) Engl. et Diels harvested in four Ivoirian forests was investigated by GC‐FID (determination of retention indices), GC/MS, and 13C‐NMR analyses. The main components identified were β‐pinene (traces–59.1%), sabinene (traces–54.2%), ( E)‐ β‐caryophyllene (0.3–39.3%), linalool (0.1–38.5%), ( E)‐ β‐ocimene (0.1–33.2%), germacrene D (0.0–33.1%), α‐pinene (0.1–32.3%), and germacrene B (0–21.2%). The 48 oil compositions were submitted to hierarchical clustering and principal components analyses, which allowed the distinction of three groups within the oil samples. The oil composition of the major group ( Group I, 33 samples) was dominated by ( E)‐ β‐caryophyllene and linalool. The oils of Group II (eight samples) contained mainly β‐pinene and α‐pinene, while those of Group III (seven samples) were dominated by sabinene, limonene, and β‐phellandrene. Moreover, the compositions of the Ivoirian C. patens leaf oils differed from those of Nigerian and Cameroonian origins. 相似文献

Open marsh water management (OMWM) of salt marshes modifies grid‐ditched marshes by creating permanent ponds and radial ditches in the high marsh that reduce mosquito production and enhance fish predation on mosquitoes. It is preferable to using pesticides to control salt marsh mosquito production and is commonly presented as a restoration or habitat enhancement tool for grid‐ditched salt marshes. Monitoring of nekton, vegetation, groundwater level, soil salinity, and bird communities before and after OMWM at 11 (six treatment and five reference sites) Atlantic Coast (U.S.A.) salt marshes revealed high variability within and among differing OMWM techniques (ditch‐plugging, reengineering of sill ditches, and the creation of ponds and radial ditches). At three marshes, the dominant nekton shifted from fish (primarily Fundulidae species) to shrimp (Palaemonidae species) after manipulations and shrimp density increased at other treatment sites. Vegetation changed at only two sites, one with construction equipment impacts (not desired) and one with a decrease in woody vegetation along existing ditches (desired). One marsh had lower groundwater level and soil salinity, and bird use, although variable, was often unrelated to OMWM manipulations. The potential effects of OMWM manipulations on non‐target salt marsh resources need to be carefully considered by resource planners when managing marshes for mosquito control. 相似文献

On sedimentary tidal flats near the island of Sylt (German Bight, North Sea) abundance and size distribution of periwinkles, Littorina littorea L., were studied in low intertidal and in shallow and deep subtidal mussel beds ( Mytilus edulis L.). In low intertidal mussel beds, surveys revealed that high densities (1,369±571 m –2) of juvenile snails (≤13 mm) were positively correlated with strong barnacle epigrowth ( Semibalanus balanoides L. and Balanus crenatus Bruguière) on mussels. A subsequent field experiment showed that recruitment of L. littorea was restricted to the intertidal zone. Abundances of periwinkles (213±114 m –2) and barnacles abruptly decreased in the adjacent shallow subtidal zone, which served as a habitat for older snails (>13 mm). L. littorea was completely absent from disjunct deep (5 m) subtidal mussel beds. Snail abundance varied seasonally with maxima of >4,000 m –2 in low intertidal mussel beds in October and minima in July, just before the onset of new recruitment. I suggest that the
presence of cracks and crevices among the dense barnacle overgrowth in intertidal mussel beds favoured recruitment and survival
of juvenile snails. Larger (older) specimens are assumed to actively migrate to the less favourable adjacent subtidal. Therefore,
intertidal mussel beds are considered as nurseries for the population of L. littorea in the Wadden Sea.

In a sandy bay with mussel beds in the Wadden Sea (Island of Sylt, eastern North Sea), periwinkles Littorina littorea (L.) were often strongly overgrown with the barnacle Balanus crenatus Bruguière in the lower intertidal zone. Consequences of this epibiosis on mobility, reproduction and mortalityof the snail
were examined. B. crenatus growing on L. littorea increased snail volume up to 4-fold and weight up to 3.5-fold and crawling speed of fouled L. littorea was significantly slowed down. The epibiotic structure also caused a decrease in reproductive output. In laboratory experiments,
egg production of fouled L. littorea was significantly lower than in snails free of barnacles. Presumably, copulation of the periwinkles is hampered by the voluminous
and prickly cover of barnacles. Field studies demonstrated an increased mortality of overgrown L. littorea. A decrease in reproductive output and a lower survival of snails with a cover of barnacles suggest that B. crenatus epibionts may have a significant impact on the population of L. littorea.

The present work deals with the histochemical, histoenzymological and micro-analytical study of the stomach of Littorina Littorea (L.). The results suggest the existence of intracellular digestion within the stomach cells. Thus, the occurrence of lysosomes in the mid-cytoplasm of stomach cells has been revealed by demonstration beta-glucuronidase activity in cryostat sections of frozen tissues. Other enzymatic activities have been proved with the same tissues. Accordingly, the results on lipid and pigment histochemistry indicate a certain digestion in this cell type. Mucocytes show a protective role for the epithelium, their main secretions being acid MPS. The elemental composition of electron dense concretions from the stomach cells indicate the presence of very high amounts of iron associated to lower peaks for sulphur, phosphorous and other cations found as calcium, copper and zinc. 相似文献

Microbial methanogenesis was proved geochemically, based on the abundance of methanogenic bacteria and methane production rates in experiments with radioactive carbon. The results are compared with direct measurements of methane concentrations in mud samples taken with a hermetic sampler. Five distinct macroinvertebrate assemblages were identified using cluster analysis of the rank-order abundances of 13 orders in 15 freshwater springs of central Pennsylvania, U.S.A. A principal components analysis of 20 environmental factors indicated that an insect-dominated assemblage occurred in low pH, softwater sandstone springs and an amphipod-dominated assemblage was associated with medium to hardwater springs with a silt to gravel substratum. Three other assemblages were found in hardwater limestone springs: the peracaridan-hydrobiid assemblage was characterized by dense macrophyte beds and a silt to cobble substratum, the peracaridan-triclad-glossosomatid assemblage by a rubbly, gravel-cobble substratum and relatively high discharge, and the peracaridan-hydrobiid-oligochaete assemblage by a silty substratum and dense mats of green algae.Most of the common macroinvertebrate species were associated with specific physical, chemical, and (or) vegetational factors, but abundance associations between species pairs were generally lacking. We infer that assemblages are primarily determined by the match between the environmental mosaic of individual springs and the ecological requirements of the available species, rather than by strong interspecific interactions.Species-environment associations were assessed in an additional study of five closely neighboring springs in which some environmental variables of the wider study were nearly constant. 相似文献

This paper deals with the Baltic coastline in Poland. Features of the climate, geomorphology, substratum, soils and vegetation are outlined. The historical forest succession is based on the results of palynological studies of fossil soils. The present-day dynamics of the plant communities are examined from the viewpoint of primary succession, regression, regeneration and secondary succession. The primary succession on moving dunes is described with particular reference to deflation fields. Attention is drawn to the spatial changes in the communities from the 16th to the 20th century as a result of natural and human factors. This study shows that during the 19th and 20th centuries and especially in the last 25 years, the dynamics of the dunes and their vegetation have been much reduced, owing to the widespread stabilization of the substratum by forests and the ongoing abrasion of the coastal dunes. 相似文献

The present study depicts the presence of a gradient in the morphological characters of Thymelaea hirsuta (L.) Endl. leaves which correlated with the environmental gradient prevailing in the Western Mediterranean region of Egypt. The less arid and more calcareous habitats harbour individuals with obtuse and gentle curved leaf apices and gentle involute leaf margins. With the increase of aridity and decrease of CaCO 3, the leaf apices become acute and strongly curved, and the leaf margins become strongly involuted. Significant variations in seed weight, seedling emergence and viability of seed embryos in T. hirsuta, in relation to habitat types, are also shown and discussed. 相似文献

Stachybotrys (S.) chartarum is a cellulolytic mould with the ability to produce highly cytotoxic macrocyclic trichothecenes. Two chemotypes are defined according to their ability to produce either atranones or satratoxins. S. chartarum has been well known as the causative agent of the lethal disease stachybotryotoxicosis in horses. Further investigations revealed that this disease is strictly correlated with the presence of macrocyclic trichothecenes. Furthermore, their occurrence in water-damaged buildings has been linked to adverse health effects such as the sick building syndrome. As the chemotypes cannot be characterized via phenotypic criteria, different methods such as PCR, MALDI–TOF MS, LC–MS/MS, thin-layer chromatography and cytotoxicity assays have been used so far. Fourier-transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) is commonly used for the differentiation of bacteria and yeasts, but this technique is also applicable to filamentous fungi. Hence, this study aimed at evaluating to which extent a reliable differentiation of S. chartarum chemotypes A and S is possible. Besides, another objective was to verify if the recently introduced third genotype of S. chartarum can be identified. Therefore, 28 strains including the two chemotypes and the third genotype H were cultivated on malt extract agar (MEA) and potato dextrose agar in three biological replicates. Each sample was applied to FT-IR measurements on day 7, 14 and 21 of cultivation. In this study, we achieved a distinction of the chemotypes A and S via FT-IR spectroscopy after incubation for 7 days on MEA. In terms of genotype differentiation, the PCR detecting satratoxin- and atranone-gene clusters remained the only applicable method. 相似文献

Sediments of the southern Baltic Sea were analysed for content of steryl chlorin esters, the chlorin compounds discovered
recently in the marine environment. The chlorin esters occur in the Baltic sediments in substantial amounts and form a considerable
fraction of the total chlorin content. Among the physicochemical parameters studied the highest correlation with the steryl
chlorins showed organic carbon content in sediments and the content of fraction of sediments smaller than 10 μm. A significant
correlation was observed between the steryl chlorins content and other chlorins as chlorophyll a, phaeophytin a, pyrophaeophytin a as well as with β-carotene, the distinctly less significant correlation was with phaeophorbide a. This indicates an other way of formation of the steryl chlorins from algae than zooplankton grazing. 相似文献

The ability of males of Littorina littorea and L. saxatilis to discriminate between mates of different sex, species and size was examined. In partner choice experiments males of L. littorea had the possibility to initiate a copulation with either a female or a male. The males did not show a preference for either sex. There was therefore no evidence that they could determine the sex of a conspecific prior to copulation. The duration of intrasexual copulation was considerably shorter than for intersexual copulation, both in the field and in laboratory experiments. For the two species, intersexual copulations were far more frequent than intrasexual ones. This can partly be explained by the difference in copulation time.Few interspecific copulating pairs were found on the shore. This may reflect a low interspecific encounter rate rather than a mechanism of species recognition. On all of these occasions, however, the active male was of L. saxatilis. It is argued that selection against precopulatory species and sex recognition is a more likely explanation than an hypothesis that states that the required mutations for precopulatory mate identification has not yet occurred.
L. littorea males copulated longer with large than with small females. Copulation time was short with parasitized females, which are sterile or of low fecundity. The allocation of mating effort by males is discussed. 相似文献

Pollen analyses were made of 54 commercial Louisiana (U.S.A.) honeys collected during 1967–1968. Fifty-eight different pollen types were identified. A direct correlation was assumed between a plant's pollen quantity and its nectar contribution. On this basis, the major Louisiana honey plants that were determined are: Fabaceae, predominantly Trifolium repens (99%), Rubus, Berchemia scandens, and Salix. Plants established as important for their nectar contributions in isolated samples are: Cephalanthus occidentalis, Sapium sebiferum, miscellaneous Compositae (Asteraceae), Glycine max, and Parthenocissus quinquefolia. Native plants such as Rubus, Berchemia scandens, and Salix contribute more to Louisiana's honey sources than do cultivated plants or introduced plants. Most samples originated from six to fifteen different plant types and thus do not appear to be of particularly diverse botanical origin. The pollen types that indicate late spring, summer, or fall honeys include: Glycine max, Cassia fasciculata, Polygonum, Lagerstroemia indica, Lythrum, Ampelopsis, Trachelospermum difforme, and others. Thirty-one samples could be considered unifloral honeys. Most Louisiana honeys were a clear color and from nectar of flowers and not honeydew. 相似文献

Summary An investigation of the zoosporic fungi in the vicinity of the Friday Harbor Laboratory, San Juan Is., Washington, revealed the presence of great numbers of fungi. With one exception ( Olpidium sp.) these were all biflagellate organisms. Predominating were species (11) of Thraustochytriaceae which abounded in water, in association with seaweeds, intertidal sands, and particularly on the surface of bottom samples down to depths of 298 m. A twelfth species of this group has several peculiarities and needs further investigation. Of the algal parasites, one on Polysiphonia and Pterosiphonia is considered new and termed Eurychasma joycei n. sp.The assistance of Drs. R. E. Norris and G. J. Two intertidal snails, Littorina saxatilis (Olivi, 1972) (upper eulittoral fringe/maritime zone) and Littorina obtusata (Linnaeus, 1758) (lower eulittoral) were collected from a boulder shore on Nobska Point, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in July
and acclimated for 15–20 days at 4 ° or 21 °C. Oxygen consumption rate (Vo 2) was determined for 11–15 subsamples of individuals at 4 °, 11 ° and 21 °C with silver/platinum oxygen electrodes. Multiple
factor analysis of variance (MFANOVA) of lo 10 transformed values of whole animal Vo 2 with log 10 dry tissue weight (DTW) as a covariant revealed that increased test temperature induced a significant increase in Vo 2 in both species ( P<0.00001). In contrast, MFANOVA revealed that temperature acclimation did not affect Vo 2 in either L. saxatilis ( P= 0.35) or L. obtusata ( P= 0.095). Thus, neither species displayed a capacity for the typical metabolic temperature compensation marked by an increase
in Vo 2 at any one test temperature in individuals acclimated to a lower temperature that is characteristic of most ectothermic animals.
Lack of capacity for metabolic temperature acclimation has also been reported in other littorinid snail species, and may be
characteristic of the group as a whole. Lack of capacity for respiratory temperature acclimation in these two species and
other littorinids may reflect the extensive semi-diurnal temperature variation that they are exposed to in their eulittoral
and eulittoral fringe/maritime zone habitats. In these habitats, any metabolic benefits derived from longer-term temperature
compensation of metabolic rates are negated by extreme daily temperature fluctuations. Instead, littorinid species appear
to have evolved mechanisms for immediate metabolic regulation which, in L. saxatilis and L. obtusata and other littorinids, appear to centre on a unique ability for near instantaneous suppression of metabolic rate and entrance
into short-term metabolic diapause at temperatures above 20–35 °C, making typical seasonal respiratory compensation mechanisms
characteristic of most ectotherms of little adaptive value to littorinid species. 相似文献

Detailed studies have been made on the structure of the barkof ten Hevea clones and the clonal variabilities with regardto the density and size of ray groups, density of laticifersper row per unit circumference of the tree, diameter of laticifersand the extent of connection between laticifers. Clonal variabilitywas highly significant with regard to the density of ray groups,ray height, ray width in the laticifer layer and the laticifercharacters.
