The diatom flora of the Salton Sea, California 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We report on diatom species of the Salton Sea, a highly saline (43 g l–1) inland lake in California. We identified and photographed all diatom taxa encountered in the phytoplankton and benthos of the Salton Sea and its immediate tributaries. Ninety-four taxa were distinguished based on their morphological features using light- and electron microscopy. In the Salton Sea, there are four general categories of diatom assemblages related to their habitats: (1) A planktonic assemblage composed of Chaetoceros muelleri var. subsalsum, Cyclotella choctawhatcheeana, Cyclotella sp., Cylindrotheca closterium, Pleurosigma ambrosianum, Thalassionema sp.; (2) a benthic assemblage with diatoms that live on the bottom (e.g. genera Caloneis, Diploneis, Entomoneis, Gyrosigma, Plagiotropis, Pleurosigma, Surirella and Tryblionella), or in algal mats (Proschkinia bulnheimii, several species of Navicula and Seminavis gracilenta); (3) an epiphytic community attached to the macroscopic green algae which grow on the rocks and other hard surfaces near shore (e.g. Achnanthes brevipes, Licmophora ehrenbergii, Tabularia parva); and (4) a freshwater assemblage composed of species that get washed in by the rivers and other inflows discharging into the Sea (e.g. Achnanthidium minutissimum, Cocconeis pediculus, Cyclotella atomus, C. scaldensis, Nitzschia elegantula, T. weissflogii). The most striking feature of the phytoplankton is the abundance of species formerly known only from marine environments; this is not surprising given the high salinity and the peculiar history of the lake. 相似文献

Lake El'gygytgyn, an impact crater lake in northeastern Siberia, was analysed based on water-column characteristics and the modern and sub-recent diatom flora. Vertical temperature, conductivity and oxygen profiles, as well as ionic concentrations in the lake water, reveal that Lake El'gygytgyn is a clear, cold-monomictic, ultra-oligotrophic high-Arctic lake with high light-penetration depth. We identified 113 diatom taxa, of which only 2 species are planktic diatoms. Cyclotella ocellata is the only quantitatively significant diatom present in the modern phytoplankton community, and is also predominant in a short sediment core, which probably reflects the mid- and late-Holocene environmental history of Lake El'gygytgyn. Pliocaenicus costatus var. sibiricus is also common but of minor importance. This is the first evidence of P. costatus var. sibiricus outside the Lake Baikal region. 相似文献

Response of the diatom flora in Jiaozhou Bay, China to environmental changes during the last century 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The diatom flora in a 164 cm long sediment core obtained from Jiaozhou Bay (Yellow Sea, China) was analyzed in order to trace the response of diatoms to environmental changes over the past 100 years. The sediment core was dated by 210Pb and 137Cs and represented approximately 100 years (1899–2001 A.D.). The flora was mainly composed of centric diatoms (59–96%). The concentration of diatoms declined sharply above 30 cm (after ~ 1981 A.D.), while the dominant species changed from Thalassiosira anguste-lineatus, Thalassiosira eccentria, Coscinodiscus excentricus, Coscinodiscus concinnus and Diploneis gorjanovici to Cyclotella stylorum and Paralia sulcata. Species richness decreased slightly, and the cell abundance of warm-water species increased. We argue that these floral changes were probably caused by climate change in combination with eutrophication resulting from aquaculture and sewage discharge. 相似文献

Sedimentary diatom assemblages in two large oligotrophic clear-water lakes were analysed, to assess their present ecological state and possible eutrophication due to diffuse nutrient loading. The lakes Pyhäjärvi and Puruvesi (Finnish lake district) are proportionally large for their catchment areas which accounts for their long retention times (ca 7 and 11 yr) and oligohumic character. Pyhäjärvi was studied by pairwise comparison of surface sediment diatom assemblages collected in 1985 and 1990 at 12 sites from different parts of the lake. In Puruvesi, the stratigraphy of diatoms was analysed in two short cores from 8 m and 32 m depths.The diatom assemblages of the two lakes are rather similar, and quite distinct from the assemblages of the mesohumic large lakes of the area. Cyclotella kuetzingiana is the most common planktonic dia- tom, but Aulacoseira ambigua abounds in Pyhäjärvi at sites with local sources of eutrophication. A diverse assemblage of benthic forms, especially Fragilaria and Achnanthes spp. characterizes the shallow bottoms in both lakes.There was little change within the short-core diatom profiles of Puruvesi, but the floral composition of the 8-m and 32-m sites differed markedly. The 8-m site, with 60–70% of benthic forms, represents illuminated bottom, on which much of the buried algae have lived in situ, while the deeper site is true profundal, dominated by sedimented planktonic algae.In Pyhäjärvi there was a slight increase in the benthic diatoms from 1985 to 1990, coinciding with increased phosphorus and chlorophyll concentrations as well as Secchi depth lowering. We interprete this observation as a very early step of eutrophication, of which first the sessile algal communities of the illuminated bottom areas have benefited. 相似文献

The Quincy Diatomite, central Washington, USA, is a middle Miocene (∼ 15 Ma) lacustrine deposit located between flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group. Two primary localities along the western margin of the deposit are examined for stratigraphic and geographic variation. Three lithologic units are recognized in the deposit and are distinguished by distinct diatom floras and subtle lithologic differences. Diatom assemblages vary geographically along the western margin of the basin. Distinctions between these assemblages are confirmed through analysis of point count data using nonMetric Multidimensional Scaling and cluster analyses. Three stages of lake development, directly influenced by the regional geology and geography, are recognized. The earliest stage was likely deposited in a series of small-interconnected pocket lakes that were eutrophic and slightly alkaline. This lake stage was succeeded by a period of shallower water depth, and dominated by benthic species. The latest stage of the lake is interpreted as representing a deepening and expansion of the lake, based on the dominance of planktonic diatom species. Tectonic uplift of the western Frenchman Hills Anticline combined with overall subsidence of the Quincy Basin during intermediate and late stages of lake development is interpreted to be the driver for relative changes in lake bathymetry. 相似文献

Changes in the elemental composition of the diatom Asterionellaformosa within mixed phytoplankton samples were determined overthe spring bloom period using energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis.Using a 10 kV electron microprobe, X-ray information from thetop 12 µm of the cell revealed overall mean concentrationsof: Si (4636 mmol kg1 dry wt), P (82), S (54), Cl (71)K (94) and Ca (90). Concentrations of all elements showed widevariation within each date sample, with unimodal frequency distributionsapproximating to a Normal distribution. Correlation of the entiredata set demonstrated clear statistical associations betweenelements, including Si, P and K. Uptake of Si during the courseof the diatom bloom led to a major fall in lake water concentration(1.0 to 0.07 mg l1), which correlated with a decreasein the mean cell Si concentration (6735 to 3107 mmol kg1dry wt) during the final phase of the bloom. Mean cell concentrationsof P and K also showed marked decreases with time, in closeparallel with cell Si. These changes in P and K were attributedto the high level of internal correlation with Si and not toany significant decrease in P and K availability in the environment. 相似文献

The flora of the south-western tip of southern Africa, the Cape flora, with some 9000 species in an area of 90,000 km2 is much more speciose than can be expected from its area or latitude, and is comparable to that expected from the most diverse equatorial areas. The endemism of almost 70%, on the other hand, is comparable to that found on islands. This high endemism is accounted for by the ecological and geographical isolation of the Cape Floristic Region, but explanations for the high species richness are not so easily found. The high species richness is accentuated when its taxonomic distribution is investigated: almost half of the total species richness of the area is accounted for by 33 'Cape floral clades'. These are clades which may have initially diversified in the region, and of which at least half the species are still found in the Cape Floristic Region. Such a high contribution by a very small number of clades is typical of island floras, not of mainland floras. The start of the radiation of these clades has been dated by molecular clock techniques to between 18 million years ago (Mya) (Pelargonium) and 8 Mya (Phylica), but only six radiations have been dated to date. The fossil evidence for the dating of the radiation is shown to be largely speculative. The Cenozoic environmental history of southern Africa is reviewed in search of possible triggers for the radiations, climatic changes emerge as the most likely candidate. Due to a very poor fossil record, the climatic history has to be inferred from larger scale patterns, these suggest large-scale fluctuations between summer wet (Palaeocene, Early Miocene) and summer dry climates (Oligocene, Middle Miocene to present). The massive speciation in the Cape flora might be accounted for by the diverse limitations to gene flow (dissected landscapes, pollinator specialisation, long flowering times allowing much phenological specialisation), as well as a richly complex environment providing a diversity of selective forces (geographically variable climate, much altitude variation, different soil types, rocky terrain providing many micro-niches, and regular fires providing both intermediate disturbances, as well as different ways of surviving the fires). However, much of this is based on correlation, and there is a great need for (a) experimental testing of the proposed speciation mechanisms, (b) more molecular clock estimates of the age and pattern of the radiations, and (c) more fossil evidence bearing on the past climates. 相似文献

Species diversity in three sections of Flandrian sediment from the Finnish Lake District was studied, together with orthodox diatom stratigraphy, to analyse the pattern of change in diatom communities over the postglacial time.The general agreement of the two approaches is clear, and in particular there is a positive direct relationship between the temporal development of these aquatic systems and changes in the diatom diversity.As indicated by both the quantitative inventory and the species diversity, these diatom communities consisted of few species immediately after glaciation at 10 000 radiocarbon years B.P. The minimum diversity at 9 000 B.P. coincides with the maximum of Melosira islandica ssp. helvetica. A trend to development of a larger number of equally abundant species, and higher total diversity followed isolation of the lake from the Baltic Sea at 8 000 B.P. This is consistent with earlier results of Duthie and Sreenivasa that the number of individuals and total diversity of the samples increase over the postglacial time. 相似文献

The diatom flora of three lakes in the ice-free Amery Oasis, East Antarctica, was studied. Two of the lakes are meltwater reservoirs, Terrasovoje Lake (31 m depth) and Radok Lake (362 m depth), while Beaver Lake (>435 m depth) is an epishelf lake. The lakes can be characterized as cold, ultra-oligotrophic and alkaline, displaying moderate (Radok and Terrasovoje lakes) to high (Beaver Lake) conductivities. There was no diatom phytoplankton present in any of the three lakes. While 34 benthic diatom taxa were identified from modern and Holocene sediments of Terrasovoje and Radok lakes, a 30-cm long sediment core recovered in Beaver Lake was barren. Five species (Luticola muticopsis, Muelleria peraustralis, Pinnularia cymatopleura, Psammothidium metakryophilum, P. stauroneioides) are endemic to the Antarctic region. All identified taxa are photographically documented and brief notes on their taxonomy, biogeography and ecology are provided. The epiphyte (lichens and bryophytes) species richness, diversity and composition on basal trunks of Picea abies in spruce swamp-forests were compared to adjacent mesic forests, on mineral soil in two southern and two middle boreal sites in old-growth forest patches in Finland The sampling was carried out along four line transects parallel to swamp-forest margin 1) in the spruce swamp-forest, 2) at the swamp-forest margin, 3) on mineral soil c 10-20 m off the swamp-forest margin and 4) on mineral soil at least 50 m off the swamp-forest margin In the two southern boreal sites there was a decreasing trend in the average species number per tree from the trees m swamp-forests (21-25 species) to the trees on mineral soil (17-18 species), whereas in the two more humid and virgin middle boreal sites a similar trend was not detected (25-28 species on all trees) There were no major differences in the epiphyte flora between the locations or study sites the dominant species occurred on nearly all sample trees The crustose lichens Cliostomum leprosum Arthoma leucopellaea and Lecanactis abietina were the most common species that were mainly confined to the swamp-forests m the southern boreal sites, C leprosum also in the middle boreal sites In addition, several rare species occurred exclusively on the swamp-forest trees Lecanactis abietina extended significantly higher on the swamp-forest trees than on the trees on mineral soil m the southern boreal sites The spruce swamp-forests proved to be one of the most important habitats for maintaining the epiphyte diversity in the boreal forest landscape 相似文献

We determined the foraging habitats of the northern batEptesicus nilssonii (Keyserling et Blasius, 1839), Brandt’s batMyotis brandtii (Eversmann, 1845), whiskered batMyotis mystacinus (Kuhl, 1819), Daubenton’s batMyotis daubentonii (Kuhl, 1819) and brown long-eared batPlecotus auritus (Linnaeus, 1758) in southern Finland. Among these species, we compared the diversities of foraging habitats, linear feature preference and the bats’ tendencies to forage simultaneously.Eptesicus nilssonii was the most opportunistic, foraging in a wide range of habitats.Myotis daubentonii (94%) foraged mainly on water habitats, whileM. brandtii/mystacinus (89%) andP. auritus (66%) foraged mainly in forest habitats. The diversities of foraging habitats used byE. nilssonii andP. auritus were higher than those ofM. brandtii/mystacinus andM. daubentonii. Both E.nilssonii andP. auritus foraged mostly alone or in small numbers, whileM. brandtii/mystacinus tended to gather in large numbers to forage in the same habitat. Half ofE. nilssonii and 46% ofM. daubentonii foraged over linear features, while other species did not use linear features to such an extent. The water exchange between the brackish-water firth Pojoviken and the Baltic Sea is restricted by a shallow sill (6 m). An outflowing, oligohaline surface layer is isolated from the nutrient-rich mesohaline deep water by a pycnocline at a depth of 6–10 m. During the ice-free period phytoplankton production is chiefly regulated by the river discharge regime. Contrary to the situation in the outer archipelago and the sea zone, in Pojoviken phytoplankton production continues until late autumn, because the stable salinity stratification prevents the phytoplankton from sinking below the critical depth for production. The phytoplankton composition seems to be regulated chiefly by salinity. The salinity interval 2–2.5 is apparently the critical range where brackish-water phytoplankton changes to an assemblage composed of typical freshwater species. 相似文献

Investigation of the microbial flora, various enzyme activities, and acidity of mash during the aging of tou-pan-chiang, a Chinese traditional fermented condiment was done. During the 3-months aging period, the population of mold and aerobic microorganisms gradually decreased after 42 d of fermentation, while counts of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts increased. In general, the activities of proteases, amylases, cellulase and α-galactosidase rose, then declined. Changes of lipase activity showed no consistent treand. The acidity of mash increased from the initial value of 0.72 to 2.35%, while the pH declined from 6.2 to 5.4. 相似文献

Synopsis Characteristics of perch were studied in 4 recently acidified lakes in southern Finland. The densities of the populations were 0–250 ha–1 compared with 1400–3300 ha–1 in two circumneutral reference lakes. The perch were close to extinction in one acidic lake and dominated by 7 year old fish in two other acidic lakes, suggesting decreased reproduction. Individual fecundity was not reduced by the acidity, but high mortality (close to 100%) of eggs in two acidic lakes indicated recruitment failure. In one of the acidified lakes reproduction had continued resulting in a population dominated by younger fish. However, increased egg mortality, low density, and the resulting high growth rate of perch in this lake were considered to be consequences of the acidity. These findings are the first documentation on the possible decrease of fish populations in Finland due to acid precipitation. 相似文献

Abstract. The ground flora (vascular plants < 2 m high, excluding trees and shrubs) was recorded in 1974 and 1991 from 163 permanent 10 m x 10 m plots arranged on a systematic grid across Wytham Woods, near Oxford (UK). The Woods cover about 320 ha, are predominantly deciduous, but of varying ages and management types. The total number of species found (173, 167 respectively), the mean richness per plot (16.7, 17.2) and the breakdown of the species list between different species types (ancient woodland indicators, other woodland species, non‐woodland species) showed no significant differences between 1974 and 1991, but mean ground cover declined from 80% to 64%. Ancient woodland indicators as a group showed less change between the years than species associated with the open glades and grassland patches in the wood. Some species increased in frequency across the woodland including Arum maculatum, Brachypodium sylvaticum, Deschampsia cespitosa and Poa trivialis; while others such as Ajugareptans, Angelica sylvestris and Circaea lutetiana declined. Mean cover of Rubus fruticosus per plot declined from 35% to 6% and of Mercurialis perennis from 32 to 24%. More species were lost from plantations than from semi‐natural stands. The results are based on only two times, so inferences on possible causes must be drawn with caution. However the results are consistent with the effects of (1) the changing conditions associated with stand growth, particularly in the plantations, and (2) an increase in browsing/grazing by deer. No evidence was found for an effect of changing soil nitrogen levels on the vegetation. Changes in the ground flora as well as the woody layers, and in managed as well as unmanaged stands should be monitored, if nature conservation objectives are to be met. 相似文献
