Questions: Does the diversity of heathland vegetation change when subjected to experimental disturbances such as cutting and nitrogen fertilization? Do changes in the vegetation structure negatively affect the regeneration of the dominant species Calluna vulgaris? Is cutting an alternative method of conserving the diversity and maintaining the structure of heathlands in the Cantabrian Mountains? Location: Calluna vulgaris heathlands on the southern slopes of the Cantabrian Mountain range, NW Spain. Methods: A total of 60 plots were treated with different combinations of cutting and twice the estimated atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (56 kg‐N.ha?1.yr?1). The changes in the cover values of the species present were monitored over a five year study period. The cover values were used to calculate abundance and species richness. Results: Fertilizing with nitrogen allows biodiversity to increase over time. However, the greatest biodiversity is associated with the cutting plus fertilization treatment, since cutting allows gaps to be opened that are easily colonized by pioneer annual species, while fertilization mainly favours an increase in the mean number of perennial herbs (graminoids and forbs). Increased perennial herb richness also corresponds to a rise in their cover values. The recovery of the dominant woody species in these communities, Calluna vulgaris, is not impeded by the increase in perennial herbs species' cover values. Conclusions: In the Calluna vulgaris heathlands studied, cutting plus fertilization allowed an increase in biodiversity over time. No displacement of the dominant woody species, Calluna vulgaris, is observed due to the presence of the perennial herbs. Cutting patches of heathland is recommended as a mechanism for maintaining high vegetation diversity, when grazing is not possible.  相似文献

This work aimed to evaluate the effects of tannin-containing heather (Calluna vulgaris, Erica spp.) and energy (oats, Avena sativa) supplementation, combined or not, on feed intake, gastrointestinal nematode infections and performance of goats grazing mountain grasslands. Two successive experiments were established across one grazing season on four paddocks. The first (late April to early August, Period 1) involved two treatments, i.e., supplementation with heather (+H) vs. non-supplementation (−H), each randomly allocated to two paddocks. The second (mid-August to mid-November, Period 2) consisted on four treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design, i.e., supplementation with heather and oats (+H+O), only heather (+H−O), only oats (−H+O), and no supplementation (−H−O). Results from Period 1 indicated that faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) were lower in +H goats (50% less in August), achieving more favourable live weight (LW) and body condition changes than −H goats. Total dry matter intake (DMI) in June was similar between treatments, with heather accounting for 0.21 of +H goat diets. Kids FEC and LW gains were not affected by heather supplementation. In Period 2, both heather and oat supplementation reduced FEC (45 and 61%, respectively) and improved goat performance, without an interaction between both factors. Total DMI in October was higher in +H+O compared to other treatments (48 vs. 30 g DM kg LW−0.75 d−1; P < 0.01). Rumen ammonia concentration was lower (P < 0.001) in +H than in −H goats, and in +O than in −O goats, whereas that of volatile fatty acids (VFA) was not affected by treatments, though the molar proportions of some VFA were modified. It is concluded that the combination of both supplements (tannins and energy) contributes to reduce gastrointestinal nematode parasitism and increases goat performance, allowing a lower dependence on conventional chemotherapy.  相似文献

This paper discusses the transition from heather-dominated vegetation to one dominated by grass. The dominating species involved are Calluna vulgaris and Deschampsia flexuosa. The study covered three years, 1980–82, and was done at the Hoorneboeg heathland in the Netherlands. Several factors account for this transition: damage caused by the chrysomelid heather beetle Lochmaea suturalis Thomson, soil type, and interaction between beetle damage and Deschampsia when already present underneath or in the immediate vicinity of a Calluna canopy. There was a time-lag between beetle damage and grass establishment or expansion. In fact, this transition concerns a type of vegetation succession and can be treated as such. This succession therefore involves several causative factors external to the system Calluna-Deschampsia. The successional process is conceived as a stochastic one defined by transition probabilities which depend on a time component, a space component and a logistic response component. All these components are discussed in this paper, but the discussion of yet another component, the crowding of Deschampsia itself, will be treated separately.  相似文献

There has been a significant loss in the UK, and elsewhere in Europe, of moorland dominated by heather Calluna vulgaris. One response to this has been the initiation of moorland vegetation restoration projects. Heather moorland has distinct assemblages of invertebrates and the ability of these to colonise newly created habitat patches has not previously been experimentally tested. We established a dispersal and colonisation experiment by transplanting C. vulgaris-dominated turfs within grassland at different distances (up to 40 m) from heather moorland vegetation. Hemiptera were cleared from these turfs by the use of an insecticide and were sampled 1 year later to investigate re-colonisation rates. Hemiptera assemblages on transplanted turfs were most dissimilar to those of heather moor at the greatest distances of these turfs from heather moor. Colonisation rates of heathland-indicator Hemiptera declined exponentially with distance. The number of individual heathland-indicator Hemiptera was higher on turfs 5 and 10 m from heather moor than on turfs transplanted back into the heather moor, possibly due to a crowding effect. Our findings indicate that moorland Hemiptera assemblages may be limited by dispersal ability. We recommend that moorland restoration schemes should be prioritised on ground as close as possible to existing heather moors.  相似文献

An outbreak of heather beetle Lochmaea suturalis on a wet heath in north-east Scotland was monitored. In many respects, the outbreak was similar to those described in lowland heaths; it started at a particular locus and when the Calluna vulgaris was depleted, spread throughout the heath. Population size then decreased annually due to some undetermined exogenous factor. A contributory factor may be the high incidence (35%) of parasitoid infestation which is density independent and, thus, not controlling.
There is no evidence that the hairiness of the var. hirsuta of Calluna has an effect on herbivory by Lochmaea. The distribution of larvae through the canopy is neither influenced by the morphology of Calluna , nor by the associated species, and appears to be at random. This probably represents the distribution of eggs since little lateral migration of the larvae takes place.
The response of the vegetation to herbivory is not simple. Associated with decreased cover of Calluna is an increase in Sphagnum plumulosum and Hypnum jutlandicum and reduction in S. compactum and Pleurozium schreberi. Changes seem to depend on initial vegetation and other parameters not measured (e.g. proximity of propagules, microclimate). Regeneration of Calluna does occur, largely by layering; although seedling occurrence increases in some areas, especially in Sphagnum , it seems unlikely that this will make a major contribution to the recovery of Calluna.  相似文献

The application of n-alkanes as faecal markers to estimate diet composition of equines and cattle was studied. Twelve mature crossbreed mares (385 ± 47 kg live weight – LW) and six adult non-lactating cows (499 ± 36 kg LW) of Asturiana de los Valles breed were divided in groups of three animals (H1, H2, H3 and H4 in equines and C1 and C2 in cattle) and housed in individual stalls. Animals received a daily total amount of 1.0 kg DM/100 kg LW of different experimental diets composed of herbaceous (Lolium perenne L.) and woody species (Ulex gallii Planchon and heather: Erica spp. and Calluna vulgaris L.). Diet composition varied among treatments: H1 and C1 – L. perenne as sole component; H2 and C2 – L. perenne (0.70) and heather (0.30); H3 – L. perenne (0.70) and U. gallii (0.30); H4 – L. perenne (0.40), heather (0.30) and U. gallii (0.30).  相似文献

The aim of this study is to explore the effects of heavy rain and drought on the flowering phenology of two shrub species Genista tinctoria and Calluna vulgaris. We conducted a field experiment over five consecutive years in Central Europe, applying annually recurring extreme drought and heavy rain events on constructed shrubland communities and recorded the flowering status. Further, we correlated spring temperature and precipitation with the onset of flowering. Both species showed a response to extreme weather events: drought delayed the mid flowering date of Genista tinctoria in 3 of 5 years by about 1 month and in 1 year advanced the mid flowering date by 10 days, but did not affect the length of flowering. Mid flowering date of Calluna vulgaris was not affected by drought, but the length of flowering was extended in 2 years by 6 and 10 days. For C. vulgaris the closer the drought occurred to the time of flowering, the larger the impact on the flowering length. Heavy rainfall advanced mid flowering date and reduced the length of flowering of Genista tinctoria by about 2 months in 1 year. Mid flowering date of Calluna vulgaris was not affected by heavy rain, but the length of flowering was reduced in 1 year by 4 days. Our data suggest that extreme weather events, including alterations to the precipitation regime, induce phenological shifts of plant species of a substantial magnitude. Thus, the impacts of climate extremes on plant life cycles may be as influential as gradual warming. Particularly, the variability in the timing of precipitation events appears to have a greater influence on flowering dynamics than the magnitude of the precipitation.  相似文献

The habitat and dietary preferences of Black Grouse were studied from 1989 to 1991 in a largely treeless habitat within a 17 km2 area of the Pennine hills of northern England using radiotelemetry. Grassland habitats were preferred by 84% of 19 birds for much of the year and heather moorland was selected in winter; the other birds, all females, remained in heather habitats all year. Most females reared broods in damp, rushy grass moorlands, but one of six broods used hay fields. Diet closely reflected seasonal plant availability in selected habitats and the leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds of a wide variety of plants were eaten. Cotton-grass Eriophorum vaginatum was important in spring, grassland herbs, grasses, sedges and rushes in summer and autumn and Ling Heather Calluna vulgaris in late autumn and winter. Males fed substantially more on heather in winter than females which partially replaced heather in their diet with the leaves of grasses and herbs. Young chicks showed considerable preference for Sawfly (Symphyta) larvae. Suggested management recommendations include the regulation of sheep-grazing, encouragement of wet flush areas and the late cutting of hay fields.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the uptake of elements (Ag, Al, As, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, P, S, Sb, Tl, U, W, Zn) by native gorse (Ulex europaeus) and heather (Calluna vulgaris), growing on abandoned tailings, Carnon Valley, Cornwall, UK. The metalliferous tailings are particularly As-rich (0.11-0.59 wt% As) and contain acid-generating sulfides (pH 3.36-6.59). Since abandonment three decades ago, gorse and heather have colonized much of the exposed tailings surface. Biogeochemical analyses demonstrate that gorse and heather are opportunistic, pioneering metallophytes that have the ability to exclude metals and As from their above-ground biomass. Concentrations of trace elements in gorse and heather were evaluated in terms of maximum tolerable levels in the feed of rodents and horses. The analyses revealed that gorse and heather do not accumulate large quantities of trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in their tissue, preventing harmful effects on rabbits feeding on them and transfers of trace metals and As into the developing wildlife food chains. This study demonstrates that (a) biogeochemical examinations of abandoned mined lands can reveal pioneering, metal-excluding plants; and (b) abandonment and benevolent neglect of mined lands can lead to the successful development of sustainable vegetation covers over mine wastes in the long term.  相似文献

We investigated whether partial self-sterility inCalluna vulgarisresultsfrom abortion of selfed offspring owing to inbreeding depressionor a late-acting self-incompatibility mechanism, and whetherself-pollen interferes with normal functioning of cross-pollen.Self-pollination resulted in 75% less seed set than cross-pollination.Self-pollen tubes reached ovaries and penetrated ovules as oftenas those of cross-pollen. Following self-pollination, examinationof the size of undeveloped seeds showed that at least 70% resultedfrom ovule fertilization and arrest of development occurredat various stages. All self-pollinated plants produced seedsand self-fertility varied among plants. These results indicatethat the reduced seed set observed in self-pollination is morelikely the result of inbreeding depression rather than a late-actingself-incompatibility system. The fecundity component of inbreedingdepression was high (0.762). Seed set was reduced by an averageof 40% when self-pollen was mixed with cross-pollen, comparedto pure cross-pollination. The mass conversion of heathland to grassland in north-western Europe the past decades is a typical example of how tipping points threaten the biodiversity and ecosystem services delivered by biota. Different explanations have been provided for this conversion, with nitrogen enrichment resulting from anthropogenic activities being a commonly supported hypothesis. Here we present a mathematical model to investigate the conditions under which the conversion of heathland to grassland can occur. The model describes indirect competition for light and nitrogen between heather dwarf shrub (Calluna vulgaris) and wavy hair-grass (Deschampsia flexuosa), while both species also over-shade each other. Nutrient co-limitation in the model is described using the Synthesizing Unit concept. Over-shading is found to play a pivotal role in the existence of alternative stable states in the model. Under constant light availability a combination of over-shading and enrichment with ammonia leads to a regime shift from heathland to grassland, while under enrichment with ammonia alone there is coexistence between the two species. Background and aims

Shrublands are ecosystems vulnerable to climate changes, with key functions such as carbon storage likely to be affected. In dwarf shrublands dominated by Calluna vulgaris, the aboveground carbon allocation is associated with community age and phase of development. As the Calluna community grows older, a shift to net biomass loss occurs and it was hypothesized this would result in carbon stock increases within the soil.

Methods

The interaction of community age with ecosystem carbon stocks was investigated through a chronosequence study on three Calluna communities, aged 11, 18 and 27 years.

Results

Aboveground Calluna carbon stock increased significantly from the 11 year community (0.73 kg C m?2) to the 18 year community (1.11 kg C m?2) but did not significantly change from 18 to 27 years (1.0 kg C m?2), indicating a net carbon gain that corresponded with the growth phase of the Calluna plants. Moss was also found to be a relatively large contributor to aboveground carbon stock (e.g. 30 % in the Young community). Moss has often been excluded in aboveground assessments on Calluna heathlands which may have led to previous stock underestimation. Belowground carbon stocks to 25 cm were six to nine times greater than in the aboveground pools. For example in the Young community, 8 % of the carbon stock was located aboveground, 35 % in the organic layer and 55 % in the mineral soil.

Conclusions

Increased heathland age resulted in increased aboveground carbon stock until peak production was reached at approximately 18 years of age. However, the proportionally large belowground carbon stock eclipsed any aboveground effect when total carbon stocks were considered. The investigation emphasized both the importance of including the mineral soil in sampling programs and of consider all major species, such as bryophytes, and vegetation age in carbon stock assessments.  相似文献

Conversion of European heathlands to grassland has been reported as a response to increased nutrient availability, especially of nitrogen; a direct effect upon mycorrhizal colonization has been proposed as an likely explanation.This hypothesis was tested in a random block experiment with four blocks and four replicates on a Danish inland heath, Hjelm Hede. Ammonium nitrate was applied (0, 35, 50 and 70 kg N ha–1 year–1) to a stand of Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull four times annually for 2 years. Calluna roots were sampled on four occasions in the 2nd year of the nitrogen treatment. The extent of ericoid mycorrhizal colonization was determined by direct observation of the roots using a line-intersection method. The nitrogen content of the current-year shoots of Calluna increased when they were treated with nitrogen. Nitrogen fertilization had no significant effects on ericoid mycorrhizal colonization of Calluna nor on root biomass. The seasonal variation in mycorrhizal colonization of the Calluna roots was highly significant. The spatial variability of mycorrhizal colonization, both in replicated plots and in the two contrasted soil horizons – the mor layer and the bleached sand – within the plots, were considerable. I conclude that heather decline under enhanced nitrogen input is unlikely to be caused by a direct impact on the ericoid mycorrhizae of Calluna. A study was made with a modulated oxygen electrode of the effect of variations of oxygen concentration on photosynthetic oxygen evolution from algal cells. When Chlorella vulgaris is examined with a modulated 650 nm light at 22°C, both the oxygen yield and the phase lag between the modulated oxygen signal and the light modulations have virtually constant values between 800 and 120 ergs · cm?1 · s?1 if the bathing medium is in equilibrium with the air. Similar results are obtained at 32°C between 1600 and 120 ergs · cm?2 · s?1. Under anerobic conditions both the oxygen yield and the phase lag decrease if the light intensity is lowered below about 500 ergs · cm?2 · s?1 at 22°C or about 1000 ergs · cm?2 · s?1 at 32°C. A modulated 706 nm beam also gives rise to these phenomena but only at significantly lower rates of oxygen evolution. The cells of Anacystis nidulans and Porphyridium cruentum appear to react in the same way to anaerobic conditions as C. vulgaris. An examination of possible mechanisms to explain these results was performed using a computer simulation of photosynthetic electron transport. The simulation suggests that a backflow of electrons from a redox pool between the Photosystems to the rate-limiting reaction between Photosystem II and the water-splitting act can cause a decrease in oxygen yield and phase lag. If the pool between the Photosystems is in a very reduced state a significant cyclic flow is expected, whereas if the pool is largely oxidized little or no cyclic flow should occur. It is shown that the effects of 706 nm illumination and removal of oxygen can be interpreted in accordance with these proposals. Since a partial inhibition of oxygen evolution by 3-(3.4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (10?8 M) magnifies the decreases in oxygen yield and phase lag, it is proposed that the pool which cycles back electrons is in front of the site of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea inhibition and is probably the initial electron acceptor pool after Photosystem II.  相似文献

Some parameters of nitrogen utilization between the ambrosia beetle Xyleborus dispar in mutualistic association with its symbiotic fungus Ambrosiella hartigii, were examined. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the major nitrogenous excretory products were made on the various life stages of X. dispar. The main nitrogenous product found in excreta and hindguts of beetles, larvae, and pupae, was uric acid (range 7·6–14·8 μg uric acid/beetle). No ninhydrin-positive compounds were located in excreta of the beetles. The concentration of ammonia-nitrogen in the various life stages averaged between 0·70 and 1·13 μg NH3-N/beetle.Total nitrogen determinations were made on sapwood samples of Malus sylvestris (0·34 ± 0·005% N by dry weight), attacked wood, ‘pre-brood’ (0·31 ± 0·005% N by dry weight), and attacked wood ‘post-brood’ (0·17 ± 0·02% N). Similar determinations of the artificial medium (l-asparagine medium) indicated that a nitrogen requirement of about 0·08–0·1% N by dry weight was necessary before oviposition could occur.Fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by individual X. dispar beetles in vitro was not indicated using the acetylene ethylene reductase method. Proteolytic enzyme activity was not found on examination of diapause beetles, their excreta, larval and pupal excreta, and the ambrosial and mycelial forms of A. hartigii.Comparative concentrations of soluble proteins and free amino acids suggested that fungus in the mycangia was built up from free amino acids of the insects. At the period of emergence, flight, and attack of new hosts, the females were found to have a concentration of soluble proteins more than double that found in the beetles during the remainder of the year. Microalgal biodiesel is an alternative bioenergy for the future. Nitrogen deprivation is usually used to increase lipid content in microalgae, however, it also lowers biomass production, resulting in not much increase of lipid productivity. Our previous study found that phosphorus played an important role in enhancing biodiesel productivity of C. vulgaris FACHB-1072 under nitrogen deficient condition. The aim of this study was to optimize two significant parameters of CO2 concentration (0.03, 4, 6, 12 %) and light intensity (40, 120, 200 μmol photons m-2 s-1) with respect to biodiesel productivity and P uptake rate of C. vulgaris FACHB-1072. It was found that the optimized conditions were 4 % CO2 concentration and 200 μmol photons m-2 s-1 light intensity. The maximum biodiesel productivity was 34.56 mg L-1 day-1; 2.7 times higher than the control (nutrient sufficient condition). Phosphorus was accumulated as polyphosphate and its maximum uptake rate was 2.08 mg L-1 day-1; twice that of the control. After optimization, the performances under nitrogen deficiency were significantly better compared with those under nitrogen sufficiency, which were rarely reported in literature. Our findings suggest a great potential to combine phosphorus removal from wastewater with biodiesel production via microalgae.  相似文献

In recent years, the use of satellite-derived vegetation indices has become a powerful tool to collect information on vegetation dynamics in a broad range of ecosystems worldwide. However, the utility of these indices as indicators of the diet composition and quality of herbivore mammals has not yet been established. This work focuses on exploring such relationships analysing four years of records of monthly Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI, a MOD13 satellite-derived index) and diet composition and quality of two populations of chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica) in the Eastern Pyrenees (Spain). Our results revealed that 68.4% and 53.3% of diet composition and quality of chamois can be explained by EVI values in the green-up season (spring) and green senescence (winter season), respectively. In both periods, EVI was related mainly to diets low in fibre (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) and heather (Calluna vulgaris) and high in nitrogen due to the consumption of Festuca, Forbs and Trifolium. During the summer season however, the EVI was not significantly related to diet components of chamois. A significant inter-year variability in the diets of the chamois was also observed. To conclude, remote sensing is appropriate to assess temporal variations in dietary components of mountain ungulates, and could be used as a component of monitoring large herbivore populations in management programmes.  相似文献

Plant macrofossil analysis of soil samples from the grave-mound Skelhøj, western Jutland in Denmark, showed that heather sods had been used as building material. The original vegetation horizon, which was still preserved within the sods allowed the reconstruction of the original vegetation cover of the Bronze Age landscape. It was therefore possible to determine the land-use systems of the Bronze Age societies there during the 14th century b.c. The sods derived from a dry to medium-dry heathland community previously used as pasture. Many grasses and herbs indicate that it was not a very well developed (or old) heathland that was used for the building material of the mound, but a newly re-established heath cover above an older one that had been burnt some years before the sod-cutting activities took place. Charred finds of roots, twig fragments, flowers and seeds of Calluna vulgaris L. (heather) dominated the plant spectrum. Cuscuta epithymum L. (dodder) was found in 31% of the sod samples. This parasitic plant is known for successfully spreading on burnt heather plants that have started to re-develop with new shoots.  相似文献

In this field study we show that temperate coastal heath vegetation has a significant off-season uptake potential for nitrogen, both in the form of ammonium and as glycine, throughout winter. We injected 15N-ammonium and 15N 2×(13C)-glycine into the soil twice during winter and once at spring. The winter temperatures were similar to those of an average winter in the northern temperate region of Europe, with only few days of soil temperatures below zero or above 5°C. The vegetation, consisting of the evergreen dwarf shrub Calluna vulgaris, the deciduous dwarf shrub Salix arenaria, and the graminoids Carex arenaria and Deschampsia flexuosa, showed high root uptake of both forms of nitrogen, both 1 day after labelling and after a month, in species specific temporal patterns. Plant uptake of 13C was not significant, providing no further evidence of intact uptake of glycine. Translocation of the labelled nitrogen to shoots was generally evident after 1 month and increased as spring approached, with different translocation strategies in the three plant functional types. Furthermore, only the graminoids showed shoot growth during winter. Increasing plant nitrogen concentration from fall to spring at temperate heaths may, hence, be due to nitrogen uptake. Our results suggest that the potential for nitrogen uptake in plants at winter is of the same order of magnitude as at summer. Hence, winter nitrogen uptake in ecosystems in the temperate/boreal region should be considered when making annual nitrogen budgets of heath ecosystems, and the view of plant nutrient uptake as low in this climatic region during winter should be revised.  相似文献
