Four riverine animal communities were measured to assess the impact of extensively treated wastewater from a pulp and paper mill on the lower La Trobe River in Victoria, Australia. Benthic macroinvertebrates in channel and bankside habitats were sampled using a new air-lift corer. Population density was expressed in relation to substrate volume. Other communities measured at five sites upstream and downstream of the mill's wastewater outfall were the zooplankton, and the animals associated with submerged littoral vegetation. Ten environmental variables were also measured during the two sampling periods.A total of 50 benthic macro-invertebrate taxa were dominated by Oligochaeta, Chironomidae and Bivalvia. Benthic communities upstream and downstream of the outfall were very similar. Benthic samples showed large unexplained variation between stations and seasons, despite the similarity of stations and the stratified sampling design, but within-sample variation was small. There was some evidence that benthic faunal patchiness was associated with patterns of stream-bed scouring and deposition in periods of high flow. Littoral samples collected 28 taxa, dominated by Decapoda and Hemiptera. The benthic and littoral communities were quite distinct, with only three species common to both.Only two of the biological and environmental variables responded to wastewater from the mill: total dissolved solids rose by 20–25% over upstream levels; and zooplankton density increased by 2–3 orders of magnitude. It was concluded that wastewater treatment had successfully avoided the major environmental problems often associated with pulp and paper mills.  相似文献

Diversity and equitability of rotifer communities from billabongs (oxbows or cut-off meanders) in northern and southeastern Australia are compared. In both areas littoral taxa predominated in open water. Diversity values (Shannon-Wiener, H′) were higher than recorded for tropical assemblages elsewhere. Up to 80 rotifer species co-occurred in Northern Territory billabongs. Brachionids notably were absent; there was an apparent displacement of tropical assemblages into temperate Australia.  相似文献

The structure and functioning of salt marsh fish communities in the overall ecology of southern African estuaries is poorly understood. This study compares the ichthyofauna associated with a salt marsh creek and eelgrass bed in an attempt to evaluate the relative importance of these habitats to fishes. Taylor's salt marsh creek and adjacent eelgrass bed in the Kariega Estuary were sampled twice per season between the winter of 1992 and the autumn of 1994. The average density and standing stock of fishes were found to be considerably higher in the eelgrass bed than in the intertidal creek. Both habitats had similar fish diversities but were dominated by different taxa, the most notable of which was the dominance of mugilids in the creek and their scarcity in the eelgrass. Taylor's intertidal creek and adjacent eelgrass beds were dominated by juvenile fish, with both habitats functioning as nursery areas for juvenile fish, albeit for totally different ichthyofaunal communities. The similar fish diversities but lower abundances in the intertidal creek compared to the eelgrass beds are in contrast to similar North American studies, and refute the hypothesis that intertidal salt marsh creeks have higher fish densities but lower diversities than eelgrass beds.The first author is also the senior author  相似文献

The rotifers at this Ramsar site were inventoried for the first time. A total of 114 taxa, belonging 30 genera were found in samples collected from four aquatic habitats in the Río Paraguay basin, in northern Argentina. The rotifer fauna is characterized by a large proportion of cosmopolitan and tropicopolitan species and few species endemic to the Neotropical Region (5%). In the list, 22% of the taxa are new to the Argentine fauna. Colurella sinistra Carlin is a new record to the Neotropical fauna. The distribution and ecology of planktonic rotifers was investigated in 33 lakes in the North Island, New Zealand, between 1997 and 1999. A total of 79 species of monogonont rotifer were identified, with an average of 21 species per lake, a diversity which is high in comparison with many previous New Zealand studies. Most species recorded were cosmopolitan taxa, and were widespread in their distribution over the North Island. Multivariate analyses (Multi-Dimensional Scaling and Canonical Correspondence Analysis) did not distinguish distinct lake groupings based on rotifer communities, but rather gradients in assemblages, which were most highly associated with lake trophic state. Based on these responses, the development of potential rotifer bioindicator schemes for lake trophic state is described and discussed.  相似文献

The rotifer community of the canyon shaped Slapy Reservoir was studied over four years, from 2000 to 2003. A total of 38 rotifer taxa were identified in the pelagial zone. The dominant species, Keratella cochlearis, K. quadrata, Polyarthra dolichoptera, P. vulgaris, Synchaeta lakowitziana and Pompholyx sulcata, were similar to other reservoirs in the same area. Tychoplanktic species, which are typical for communities of upstream reservoirs, are reduced in the Slapy Reservoir. The seasonal fluctuation of rotifer abundance is characterized by a significant spring peak, clear water depression, summer peak and sometimes a lower peak in autumn. Fluctuation of the rotifer species shows a highly unified trend through the years with very low variation through the years. It results from the input of hypolimnetic water from an upstream reservoir, which erased a large part of the effect of year to year climatic fluctuations.  相似文献

Non-flowing, slackwater habitats in lowland rivers support diverse and abundant benthic microfaunal communities; however, there is little information on how these communities respond to changes in hydrology. In this study, we tested two hypotheses: (1) microfaunal richness and density will be higher in slackwater habitats compared to flowing habitats; (2) altering the hydrology of a habitat will result in changes in the richness and density of microfauna over time so that communities will become similar to those found in a habitat with the same flow characteristics. Flowing and slackwater habitats were manipulated by constructing barriers to redirect flows, either away from flowing habitats and creating slackwater habitats, or towards a slackwater creating a flowing habitat. The resultant epibenthic microfaunal communities were compared to those in unmodified slackwaters and flowing habitats. Over a 4-month period, epibenthic microfaunal samples were collected from the four experimental treatments. Analysis of variance indicates that there was no difference in rotifer richness or abundance between habitat types, but significant differences in the richness and abundance of microcrustacean occurred with higher richness and densities occurring in the slackwater habitats compared to flowing habitats. Within four weeks of the treatments being applied, there was little difference in the microfaunal communities between the natural and created flowing habitats or between the natural and created slackwater habitats. As the hydrology of a river varies, slackwater habitats will be scoured and new habitats created. The microfauna populations associated with these habitats appear to have strategies that enable them to cope with the disturbance and to recolonise newly created slackwater areas.  相似文献

Five plant communities contrasting in successional status and human impact from the southern part of the ‘Wienerwald’ (Austria) are analyzed using vegetation relevés, spectra of area types and a newly proposed disjunction quotient. A climax community (Asperulo-Fagetum), a subclimax community (Querco-Carpinetum s.l.), an anthropogenous substitute community (Mesobromion) and two natural, non-climax permanent communities (Euphorbio saxatilis-Pinetum nigrae and Fumano-Stipetum eriocaulis) are recognized. The disjunction quotient is defined as the number of partial (discontinous) areas divided by the size of the total area of distribution of a species. In particular, the average disjunction quotients of the species in the first two communities reflect relatively table environments only slightly influenced by man, with many ancient, stable taxa. These communities are characterized by species with well-delimited, stable distribution areas. The species in the Mesobromion community have very low average disjunction quotients as its component species are widely and continuously distributed and are often promoted by man. In contrast to these communities, the species linked to the natural permanent, non-climax communities of extreme habitats, have high distribution quotients i.e. small, disconinuous areas; this illustrates the relic character of these plant communities and of the eastern edge of the Alps is a whole. Using the highly variable disjunction quotient of all species and communities examined, the concepts of climax and permanent communities (of different origin) are discussed with regard to European conditions.  相似文献

In spatially heterogeneous habitats, local communities may be shaped by both local biotic and abiotic factors and by regional factors (dispersal of individuals among habitats). In recent years, ecologists have been increasingly interested in measuring how much the structure of local communities is explained by spatial variables and by non-spatial environmental variables. We analysed the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on rotifer communities in 12 anthropogenic water bodies in the Silesian Upland. The studies were conducted in two groups of water bodies which were of differing dimensions: group A — seven water bodies situated very close to each other (between 50 and 500 m), group B — the water bodies from group A as well as 5 other water bodies situated 2 km away, which were at greater distances from each other (about 1–3 km). Apart from this, genetic variation was assessed in 3 populations of Brachionus plicatilis Müller to estimate the level of gene flow between them. A characteristic feature of anthropogenic water bodies is a high variation in environmental conditions, so they are specific and difficult habitats for many organisms. Our study shows that environmental factors played a major role in shaping the local rotifer communities in heterogeneous anthropogenic water bodies with respect to salinity. Results of this study suggest, however, that in neighbouring water bodies, dispersal is very important for maintenance of local species diversity. A medium level of genetic variation between populations of B. plicatilis indicates that gene flow occurs irrespective of the distance between local populations.  相似文献

The insular limestone karsts of northern Vietnam harbor a very rich biodiversity. Many taxa are strongly associated with these environments, and individual species communities can differ considerably among karst areas. The exact processes that have shaped the biotic composition of these habitats, however, remain largely unknown. In this study, the role of two major processes for the assembly of snail communities on limestone karsts was investigated, interspecific competition and filtering of taxa due to geographical factors. Communities of operculate land snails of the genus Cyclophorus were studied using the dry and fluid‐preserved specimen collections of the Natural History Museum, London. Phylogenetic distances (based on a Bayesian analysis using DNA sequence data) and shell characters (based on 200 semilandmarks) were used as proxies for ecological similarity and were analyzed to reveal patterns of overdispersion (indicating competition) or clustering (indicating filtering) in observed communities compared to random communities. Among the seven studied karst areas, a total of 15 Cyclophorus lineages were found. Unique communities were present in each area. The analyses revealed phylogenetic overdispersion in six and morphological overdispersion in four of seven karst areas. The pattern of frequent phylogenetic overdispersion indicated that competition among lineages is the major process shaping the Cyclophorus communities studied. The Coastal Area, which was phylogenetically overdispersed, showed a clear morphological clustering, which could have been caused by similar ecological adaptations among taxa in this environment. Only the community in the Cuc Phuong Area showed a pattern of phylogenetic clustering, which was partly caused by an absence of a certain, phylogenetically very distinct group in this region. Filtering due to geographical factors could have been involved here. This study shows how museum collections can be used to examine community assembly and contributes to the understanding of the processes that have shaped karst communities in Vietnam.  相似文献

The extent to which fish communities are structured by spatial variability in coral reef habitats versus stochastic processes (such as larval supply) is very important in predicting responses to sustained and ongoing habitat degradation. In this study, butterflyfish and benthic communities were surveyed annually over 15 years on 47 reefs (spanning 12° of latitude) of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Spatial autocorrelation in the structure of butterflyfish communities versus key differences in reef habitats was investigated to assess the extent to which the structure of these fish communities is influenced by habitat conditions. Benthic communities on each of the 47 reefs were broadly categorised as either: 1. Poritidae/Alcyoniidae, 2. mixed taxa, 3. soft coral or 4. Acropora-dominated habitats. These habitat types most reflected increases in water clarity and wave exposure, moving across the GBR shelf from coastal to outer-shelf environments. In turn, each habitat type also supported very distinct butterflyfish communities. Hard coral feeders were always the dominant butterflyfish species in each community type. However, the numerically dominant species changed according to habitat type, representing spatial replacement of species across the shelf. This study reveals clear and consistent differences in the structure of fish communities among reefs associated with marked differences in habitat structure.  相似文献

Ten high-mountain ponds in Mount Rainier National Park, WashingtonState, were studied from ice-out in June through September1992to investigate the influences of fluctuating pond volumes onzooplankton communities. All of the ponds were at maximum volumeimmediately after ice-out. The temporary pond with the shortestwet phase was inhabited by rotifer taxa with short generationtimes and a crustacean taxon with the ability to encyst as drought-resistantresting bodies at immature stages of development. Dominant zooplanktontaxa in three other temporary ponds and six permanent pondswere similar. Rotifer densities typically were lower in temporaryponds relative to those in permanent ponds, although Brachionusurceolaris was abundant shortly before the temporary ponds dried.Large volume loss was associated with large declines in totalabundances of crustacean populations. Daphnia rosea was notpresent in temporary ponds following fall recharge. In deep-permanentponds, copepods had slower developmental rates, smaller temporalchanges in total abundances of crustacean populations and twoadditional large-bodied crustacean taxa were present relativeto the characteristics of crustacean communities in shallow-permanentponds. Owing to their small sizes and sensitivity to environmentalchange, collectively ponds such as these may provide an earlysignal of long-term climate change in aquatic systems.  相似文献

Microbial taxa range from being ubiquitous and abundant across space to extremely rare and endemic, depending on their ecophysiology and on different processes acting locally or regionally. However, little is known about how cosmopolitan or rare taxa combine to constitute communities and whether environmental variations promote changes in their relative abundances. Here we identified the Spatial Abundance Distribution (SpAD) of individual prokaryotic taxa (16S rDNA‐defined Operational Taxonomic Units, OTUs) across 108 globally‐distributed surface ocean stations. We grouped taxa based on their SpAD shape (“normal‐like”‐ abundant and ubiquitous; “logistic”‐ globally rare, present in few sites; and “bimodal”‐ abundant only in certain oceanic regions), and investigated how the abundance of these three categories relates to environmental gradients. Most surface assemblages were numerically dominated by a few cosmopolitan “normal‐like” OTUs, yet there was a gradual shift towards assemblages dominated by “logistic” taxa in specific areas with productivity and temperature differing the most from the average conditions in the sampled stations. When we performed the SpAD categorization including additional habitats (deeper layers and particles of varying sizes), the SpAD of many OTUs changed towards fewer “normal‐like” shapes, and OTUs categorized as globally rare in the surface ocean became abundant. This suggests that understanding the mechanisms behind microbial rarity and dominance requires expanding the context of study beyond local communities and single habitats. We show that marine bacterial communities comprise taxa displaying a continuum of SpADs, and that variations in their abundances can be linked to habitat transitions or barriers that delimit the distribution of community members.  相似文献

【目的】解析污染条件下河流生物区系的演替过程及机制,可以为生物多样性减少提供诊断,为生物多样性保护和水生生态系统的生态安全提供科学支撑。【方法】以对污染具有指示作用的轮虫类群为研究对象,选择覆盖京津冀地区的、受到人类活动干扰的北三河水系为研究区域,分别对该区域富营养化相关水质参数和轮虫群落组成进行分析,在解析污染物排放导致的河流水体水质差异和轮虫群落组成差异的基础上,阐明导致轮虫群落演替的关键污染因子。【结果】水体水质指标的分析结果表明,西部河流与东部诸河具有明显不同的环境条件,其氮、磷指标(包括总氮、溶解性总氮、总磷、溶解性总磷及活性磷)浓度显著增加。轮虫群落的分析结果表明,与东部诸河相比,西部河流的物种数目、生物个体数、物种丰度及香农威纳指数均显著降低,且群落组成显著差异。群落-环境相关分析显示,总氮、溶解性总氮、总磷、溶解性总磷、活性磷以及氨氮是导致群落显著差异的关键环境因子。【结论】北三河水系西部河流的氮、磷含量显著高于东北部河流;在环境条件改变的前提下,北三河水系西部河流比东部河流物种丰度、生物量均显著减少,同时群落组成也显著改变,高耐污型物种出现。氮、磷元素的输入是导致轮虫群落演替的关键环境因子。  相似文献

In urban environments, green roofs provide a number of benefits, including decreased urban heat island effects and reduced energy costs for buildings. However, little research has been done on the non-plant biota associated with green roofs, which likely affect their functionality. For the current study, we evaluated whether or not green roofs planted with two native plant communities in New York City functioned as habitats for soil fungal communities, and compared fungal communities in green roof growing media to soil microbial composition in five city parks, including Central Park and the High Line. Ten replicate roofs were sampled one year after planting; three of these roofs were more intensively sampled and compared to nearby city parks. Using Illumina sequencing of the fungal ITS region we found that green roofs supported a diverse fungal community, with numerous taxa belonging to fungal groups capable of surviving in disturbed and polluted habitats. Across roofs, there was significant biogeographical clustering of fungal communities, indicating that community assembly of roof microbes across the greater New York City area is locally variable. Green roof fungal communities were compositionally distinct from city parks and only 54% of the green roof taxa were also found in the park soils. Phospholipid fatty acid analysis revealed that park soils had greater microbial biomass and higher bacterial to fungal ratios than green roof substrates. City park soils were also more enriched with heavy metals, had lower pH, and lower quantities of total bases (Ca, K, and Mg) compared to green roof substrates. While fungal communities were compositionally distinct across green roofs, they did not differentiate by plant community. Together, these results suggest that fungi living in the growing medium of green roofs may be an underestimated component of these biotic systems functioning to support some of the valued ecological services of green roofs.  相似文献

A multiplex terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (M-TRFLP) fingerprinting method was developed and validated for simultaneous analysis of the diversity and community structure of two or more microbial taxa (up to four taxa). The reproducibility and robustness of the method were examined using soil samples collected from different habitats. DNA was PCR amplified separately from soil samples using individual taxon-specific primers for bacteria, archaea, and fungi. The same samples were also subjected to a multiplex PCR with the primers for all three taxa. The terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles generated for the two sets of PCR products were almost identical not only in terms of the presence of peaks but also in terms of the relative peak intensity. The M-TRFLP method was then used to investigate rhizosphere bacterial, fungal, and rhizobial/agrobacterial communities associated with the dwarf shrub Calluna vulgaris growing in either open moorland, a mature pine forest, or a transition zone between these two habitats containing naturally regenerating pine trees. Rhizosphere microbial communities associated with Vaccinium myrtillus collected from the native pine forest were also investigated. In this study, individual PCR products from the three taxa were also pooled before restriction digestion and fragment size analysis. The terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles obtained with PCR products amplified individually and with multiplexed and pooled PCR products were found to be consistent with each other in terms of the number, position, and relative intensity of peaks. The results presented here confirm that M-TRFLP analysis is a highly reproducible and robust molecular tool for simultaneous investigation of multiple taxa, which allows more complete and higher resolution of microbial communities to be obtained more rapidly and economically.  相似文献

The taxonomic composition, ecological and spatial distribution of orthopterans were studied in different vegetation types of the typical steppe on the left bank of the Volga River basin (Saratov Prov.). Some species showed clear selectivity with respect to specific features of the soil and vegetation, despite significant annual fluctuations in the taxonomic composition and abundance of local populations. Two groups can be distinguished: the polytopic species and those inhabiting intrazonal communities but not typical steppe habitats. The orthopteran complexes of the zonal and halophytic habitats show a relatively high similarity; they differ well from those of mesophytic plant communities, restricted to the lower mesorelief areas. Intrazonal habitats with mesophytic conditions comprise almost 45% of the species diversity of orthopterans in the typical steppe subzone, and reveal the greatest diversity of life forms of these insects. The data obtained are of interest for monitoring the successive changes in steppe ecosystems affected by both climatic and anthropogenic factors.  相似文献

1. Zooplankton density was examined in a free-flowing section of the River Danube, Austria. Spatial and temporal patterns were used to identify mechanisms regulating zooplankton dynamics. 2. Zooplankton abundance differed significantly between sampling sites. These differences were the result of variations in water residence time within the habitats. Inshore habitats with low flushing rates act as storage zones for zooplankton. 3. The hydrological conditions govern the number and size of storage zones. In the study area, the highest availability of storage zones was observed at medium water level. 4. Total zooplankton numbers, total rotifer numbers and the densities of the most abundant rotifer taxa were significantly positively related to the availability of adjacent storage zones. 5. The present authors propose that inshore retention capacity, and the hydrological processes and mechanisms controlling the extent of inshore retention may be of major significance in regulated rivers with high water velocities, preventing substantial zooplankton growth in the main channel.  相似文献
