Senecio pauciflorus and S. indecorus (= Packera pauciflora and P. indecora ) are autogamous, high polyploid species with similar geographic ranges in North America. Their east-west distribution pattern including a disjunction in California is unusual within the aureoid Senecio complex and may provide insights into the origins of the aureoid complex. Taxonomic treatment of the two taxa has varied in the past due to the similarity and variability of the taxa. Results of morphological analyses of 192 herbarium specimens show that the taxa are best treated as two distinct species and that infraspecifìc variation is not related to geographical distribution. Separation of taxa remains difficult. California specimens are the most difficult to classify and may represent the ancestral group. Based on morphology and chromosome number it is suggested that the 5. pauciflorus-S. indecorus group may have originated from the arctic-alpine aureoid group including S. cymbalaria .

Natural hybridization is increasingly recognized as an important process for the ecology and evolution of natural plant populations and species. There is a great need to initiate more studies based on natural populations in order to elucidate the possible role of hybrids in nature. The reproductive success of early generation hybrids can make or break hybrid lineages and may determine the genetic structure of hybrid swarms or the potential for gene flow through future generations, but studies of hybrid reproductive success are lacking. Here we measured components of male and female reproductive success in Senecio jacobaea and S. aquaticus (Asteraceae) species and F(1) hybrids between these species under laboratory conditions, and we measured reproductive output from crosses producing F(1), F(2), and backcross (BC) generation hybrids. F(1) hybrids were readily produced, and on average, the success of crosses producing subsequent generations (F(2), BC) decreased (though remained substantial), but the success of crosses was highly dependent on the genotypes involved. Also, F(1) hybrids were bigger, produced more flowers, and therefore produced more pollen than parental plants. Finally, crosses between parents were asymmetrical, such that S. aquaticus produced more and larger F(1) seeds than did S. jacobaea.

Research on the phylogeny of a distinct group of Andean Senecio, previously considered as Lasiocephalus, resulted in the discovery of two new species, which are here described and illustrated. Senecio josei Sklená?, which grows in rocky habitats in grass páramo in southern Ecuador, is characterized by linear leaves and a racemose or paniculate synflorescence. Senecio superparamensis Sklená? is characterized by grayish–white pubescence, solitary capitula and leafy stems, and inhabits superpáramos in northern and central Ecuador.

From the fresh roots of Heliopsis longipes three new minor alkamides: longipinamide A (N-isobutyl-8,10-diynoic-3Z-undecenamide), longipenamide A (N-isobutyl-syn-8,9-dihydroxy-2E,6Z-decadienamide) and longipenamide B (N-isobutyl-syn-6,9-dihydroxy-2E,7E-decadienamide); three known alkamides: affinin (spilanthol, N-isobutyl-2E,6Z,8E-decatrienamide), N-isobutyl-2E,6Z-decadienamide and N-isobutyl-2E-decenamide; and 11 other known compounds were isolated. The structures of the three new minor alkamides were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy including 1H, 13C, DEPT, COSY, HSQC, and HMBC experiments, as well as by EI and FAB+ mass spectrometry. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the isolation of linear dihydroxyalkamides as natural products.

The seed storage globulins from sixHelianthus and four hybrids were studied using mono and bidimensional gel SDS electrophoresis (+ 2 mercaptoethanol). The polypeptide composition of each subunit was determined. Different pairs are specifically expressed according to the species studied. Three typical patterns were discriminated. All the studied species exhibit five subunits: two of them are expressed in all the species (11 and 22). The subunit corresponding to the 11 pair is present inH. petiolaris and in the three populations ofH. annuus studied. The 2b2 pair is common toH. annuus andH. argophyllus. H. petiolaris presents two specific 2a2 and 44 pairs andH. annuus a specific 33 pair. InH. argophyllus 11 33 or 44 are never observed but are replaced by 13 and 31 pairs. Some globulins, poorly represented, are of forms but present chains of higher molecular weights (in the range 54–56 kDa). Expressing variations in the banding patterns between these species by the use of a similarity index reveals complete identity between the three populations ofH. annuus. Identity between the twoH. petiolaris studied is also observed.H. annuus andH. argophyllus appear to be closer to each other thanH. petiolaris concerning the seed storage globulins.

Senecio squalidus (Oxford Ragwort) is being used as a model species to study the genetics and molecular genetics of self-incompatibility (SI) in the Asteraceae. S. squalidus has a strong system of sporophytic SI (SSI) and populations within the UK contain very few S alleles probably due to a population bottleneck experienced on its introduction to the UK. The genetic control of SSI in S. squalidus is complex and may involve a second locus epistatic to S. Progress towards identifying the female determinant of SSI in S. squalidus is reviewed here. Research is focused on plants carrying two defined S alleles, S(1) and S(2). S(2) is dominant to S(1) in pollen and stigma. RT-PCR was used to amplify three SRK-like cDNAs from stigmas of S(1)S(2) heterozygotes, but the expression patterns of these cDNAs suggest that they are unlikely to be directly involved in SI or pollen-stigma interactions in contrast to SSI in the Brassicaceae. Stigma-specific proteins associated with the S(1) allele and the S(2) allele have been identified using isoelectric focusing and these proteins have been designated SSP1 (Stigma S-associated Protein 1) and SSP2. SSP1 and SSP2 cDNAs have been cloned by 3' and 5' RACE and shown to be allelic forms of the same gene, SSP. The expression of SSP and its linkage to the S locus are currently being investigated. Initial results show SSP to be expressed exclusively in stigmas and developmentally regulated, with maximal expression occurring at and just before anthesis when SI is fully functional, SSP expression being undetectable in immature buds. Together these data suggest that SSP is a strong candidate for a Senecio S-gene.

The genusDendrosenecio (giant groundsels), encompassing three species and 12 subspecies, is endemic to the high mountains of East and Central Africa where it constitutes the most conspicuous components of the afroalpine vegetation. Two lifeforms, the arborescent and the prostrate rhizomatous, are regarded as the results of evolution from forest-living woody or herbaceous ancestors. Due to the uninterrupted growth period in the tropics, there are no anatomical or morphological features which allow conventional age determination. However, stem elongation rates have been determined (3–5.5 cm per year) and indicate an age of about 250 years for the tallest arborescent Dendrosenecios which may reach a height of 10 m. 30 to 120 large leaves are clustered in an enormous terminal rosette, justifying the term giant rosette plants. A leaf bud, consisting of about as many developing leaves as the rosette contains, is found in the center. During the nocturnal frost period the adult rosette leaves form a so-called night-bud by nyctinastic upwards bending and thus protect the leaf bud from freezing by insulation. The stem is surrounded by a mantle of persistent dead leaves; this ameliorates the microclimate of the pith-cells which greatly contribute to water transport into the leaves. Below the leaf rosette a zone of putrefaction is found, from where the decay of the dead leaves apparently provides nutrients directly to the growing stem. The population dynamics of the arborescentD. keniodendron is characterized by a simultaneous inflorescence development at irregular intervals of up to more than twenty years. Due to sporadic flowering and a seedling survival rate of less than 1%, oscillations of the population size are to be expected.

The karyology ofCentaurea sect.Acrocentron is surveyed. 19 chromosome counts on 8 species are reported; those onC. acaulis, C. crocata, C. galianoi, C. pubescens, andC. malinvaldiana are new. The basic chromosome numbers of the section are x = 11 and x = 10. Karyological arguments have been used to show that evolution was from x = 11 to x = 10. This is supported by biogeographical data. Two main centres of diversification of sect.Acrocentron were studied from that point of view: the East and the Southwest Mediterranean region.

A comparison of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and isozyme diversity in Senecio nebrodensis L., a species restricted to certain mountain ranges in Spain, and S. viscosus L., a widespread ruderal species in Europe, revealed that S. viscosus possessed the more common of two cpDNA haplotypes resolved in S. nebrodensis and contained only a small subset of the alleles found in S. nebrodensis at enzyme coding loci. The two species shared one restriction length mutation and one site mutation in their cpDNA, which distinguished them from other European Senecio species examined previously. Taken overall, these results support the hypothesis that S. nebrodensis and S. viscosus are related as a progenitor-derivative pair of species. The fact that no novel alleles were found in S. viscosus would suggest a relatively recent origin of the species, most probably in late glacial or postglacial times.

VINCENT, P. L. D. & GETLIFFE, F. M., 1992. Elucidative studies on the generic concept of Senecio (Asteraceae) . This paper presents the results of studies of the generic concept of Senecio sensu stricto. The sample of taxa studied consisted of 93 Natal senecios (including seven varieties and two forms), five Cape heterochromous senecios and nine non-southern African senecios, including the type of the genus, S. vulgaris L. Also included in the study were six species from taxonomically closely related genera in the tribe Senecioneae and one Senecio of uncertain taxonomic position. The phenotype of these taxa was investigated with respect to a large number (122) of morphological and micromorphological characters. Six characters were selected as being taxonomically important with respect to elucidating the generic concept of Senecio sensu stricto. The generic concept of Senecio has been provisionally re-circumscribed and the generic status of each of the senecios and non-senecios studied has been tested according to this concept of Senecio sensu stricto sensu Vincent. In the light of this concept of Senecio , the following species are recommended for exclusion from Senecio sensu stricto sensu Vincent: S. cissampelinus, S. transvaalensis, S. syringifolius and S. hockii. The following species are considered to be peripheral to Senecio sensu stricto sensu Vincent: S. tanacetopsis, S. seminiveus, S. medley-woodii, S. tamoides, S. helminthioides, S. barbertonicus, S. brevilorus, S. viminalis, S. radicans and S.fulgens. Before any taxonomic changes are made to the current composition of Senecio , the concept of Senecio sensu stricto sensu Vincent, is being tested on a worldwide sample of the genus.

The subfamily Mutisioideae (74 genera, ca. 865 species), which comprises three tribes, Mutisieae (43 genera, ca. 500 species),
Nassauvieae (25 genera, ca. 315 species), and Stifftieae (six genera, 48 species), is analyzed at the generic level. A total
of 87 genera traditionally related to Mutisioideae were studied. The genera of Mutisioideae are described and illustrated,
and keys to tribes and genera are given. Corollas, anthers, styles, and pollen, are analyzed and discussed. The styles (smooth,
rugulose to papillose, papillae short and rounded) constitute the main characters for delimiting the subfamily. The presence
and distribution of the style papillae support the recognition of three tribes, although other characters as corolla shape
contribute to their definition. The pollen of Nassauvieae can be clearly differentiated from the pollen of Mutisieae and Stifftieae.
The morphology supports the exclusion of Brachylaena, Cloiselia, Dicoma, Duseniella, Erythrocephalum, Gladiopappus, Hesperomannia, Macledium, Moquinia, Pasaccardoa, Pleiotaxis, Tarchonanthus, and Warionia but not the exclusion of other taxa, for example, Hecastocleis, the Gochnatia complex, or the Ainsliaea group members.
