Helisoma duryi has been proposed as a biological control agent in schistosomiasis due to its superiority in laboratory competition experiments with various species of the intermediate host snails. Therefore it was considered important to evaluate the response of this snail species and the intermediate host species, Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus, to various physical, chemical and biological factors under laboratory conditions in order to obtain information on the similarities in the ecological niches of these species. The factors considered in the present paper are: temperature, darkness, starvation and food. All three species had optimal growth and egg laying at 26–28 °C. Only H. duryi survived for a longer period at 33°C and it was capable of starting egg laying at this temperature although the onset was delayed. However, low temperature (18°C) caused a relatively larger decrease in egg laying of H. duryi than in the other two species. Growth and egg laying was reduced for H. duryi and B. truncatus kept under darkness and B. alexandrina could not tolerate maintenance under darkness. A few days of starvation of juvenile snails had no effect on later growth and egg laying capacity of the survivors, although mortality in B. truncatus was increased. B. alexandrina had a lower tolerance to starvation than the other two species. Egg laying of snails fed only one of the three laboratory food types decreased for all three species in the order: Vov-vov (dog food in dry pellets), Tetramin (fish food) and lettuce. Combinations of lettuce and one or more proteinaceous food types gave optimal growth and egg laying for all three species.  相似文献

Infectivity of Echinostoma liei miracidia to NIH albino Biomphalaria glabrata declines significantly from 62% with eggs incubated for 10–24 days to 3% for eggs incubated for 30–42 days. In mass exposures of 25 snails to 125 miracidia in 1 liter of water infectivity was high (54–66 %) and not affected by the presence of lettuce, plastic sheets, chalk, detritus or snail-conditioned water. In distilled water or snail-conditioned water the proportion of infected snails exposed singly to five miracidia per snail in 5 ml was not significantly different from the results of mass exposures of 25 snails in 1 liter to the same snail: miracidia ratio. Some evidence is presented suggesting that infected snails are less likely to suffer mortality than uninfected snails during the first 7–10 days post-exposure.The results suggest that Echinostoma liei miracidial searching efficiency is robust in volumes of at least 1 liter and in a heterogeneous habitat. These aspects enhance the competitive potential of echinostomes as possible biological control agents for Schistosoma mansoni.  相似文献

Interspecific competition between Helisoma duryi and the intermediatehost of schistosomes, Bulinus truncatus results in reduced growthand reproduction of B. truncatus and the effects are more pronouncedas the density of H. duryi is increased. The drastic reductionin reproduction of B. trunauus is the result of a predationby H. duryi on egg masses. It appears that increasing the foodsupply cannot completely eliminate the effects of competition.Although the growth and reproduction of B. truncatus in competitionwith H. duryi increases significantly with the increased foodsupply, both growth and reproduction are still reduced comparedto control snails given the same amount of food. Biological control of the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis by means of the introduction oa a competitor snail Helisoma duryi has been suggested. The effect of conditioning by Biomphalaria camerunensis and H. duryi respectively on growth and egg laying capacity of B. camerunensis and on the hatchability of B. camerunensis egg masses was compared. No differences were found besides an indication of a growth promoting effect of B. camerunensis conditioning. B. camerunensis egg masses were found to be much more sensitive to mechanical interference from snails than were H. duryi egg masses. Both juvenile and adult H. duryi caused a great reduction in the number of B. camerunensis egg masses and adult B. camerunensis showed a great tendency to destroy its own egg masses. Newly hatched B. camerunensis appeared to be destroyed to a greater extent by adult H. duryi than by adult B. camerunensis.  相似文献

Biological control of the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis by means of the introduction of a competitor snail Helisoma duryi has been suggested. In the present laboratory studies the allometric size-weight relationships of H. duryi and Biomphalaria camerunensis were investigated in order to get a tool for estimating the biomass and dry-weight of snails.Competition experiments were conducted and the results showed a marked inhibition of growth and reproduction of B. camerunensis. No conclusions about the competitive interactions were drawn from the present results but experiments are established to elucidate these mechanisms.  相似文献

Helisoma duryi, a planorbid snail species, which is a potentialbiological control agent of the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis,was introduced in an irrigation scheme (T.P.C.) in northernTanzania in 1972. The species has been present at T.P.C. since,and during a snail survey in January 1981, a great variationin the shell morphology of H. duryi, ranging from typical H.duryi forms to forms resembling Biomphalaria pfeifferi, theintermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni in the area, was observed.The Biomphalaria- Wkc forms of H. duryi could constitute anentire population but also occasionally occurred in populationsof typical H. duryi. In order to better understand the role of herbivorous snails in freshwater ecosystems, we conducted experiments investigating food preference of the snail Radix swinhoei on leaves of the submerged plant Vallisneria spiralis with and without periphyton coverage. The effects of snail grazing on the growth of V. spiralis were assessed in a no-snail control and at three snail densities (80, 160, 240 individuals m?2). Results showed that the snails chose preferentially leaves covered by periphyton. Grazing activity at low snail density (80 individuals m?2) was found to stimulate V. spiralis growth, but at higher snail density (240 individuals m?2), plant growth was apparently suppressed. An increase observed in nutrient concentrations in water column with increasing snail density may be attributed to nutrient release by snails. This study suggests that the nature of the relationship between herbivorous snails and macrophytes in freshwater ecosystems depends on the abundance of the snails. At low snail density, the relationship may be a mutualistic one, but at high density snail herbivory may impact negatively on macrophyte biomass in lakes.  相似文献

Exposure of rounded, glass-adherent hemocytes from a Schistosoma mansoni-susceptible (PR albino) and S. mansoni-refractory (10-R2) stock of snails, Biomphalaria glabrata, to fluoresceinlabeled concanavalin A induces a redistribution of surface membrane Con A receptors. Receptor redistribution (patching and capping) on hemocytes from both snail stocks can be characterized as (1) rapid, with maximum cap formation occurring within 15 min of lectin treatment at 22°C, (2) sodium azide sensitive, but only at relatively high inhibitor concentrations (100–200 mm?N3 for capping and 200 mm?N3 for patching inhibition), (3) pronase sensitive (partial), but trypsin resistant, and (4) generally unaffected by exposure of snails to S. mansoni miracidia 60 or 180 min prior to extraction of hemolymph (hemocyte) samples for Con A testing. Although differences in the time course of receptor redistribution are exhibited between PR albino and 10-R2 snail hemocytes, the results of experiments involving sodium azide, proteolytic enzymes, and schistosome exposure strongly suggest that Con A-binding determinants and their associated membrane components on rounded hemocytes are very similar in both susceptible and refractory Biomphalaria stocks. It is concluded that if schistosome recognition in refractory 10-R2 snails is mediated through specific hemocyte membrane components, those components associated with Con A reactivity probably are not directly involved in the recognition process.  相似文献

Sporocysts of Schistosoma mansoni (PR1 strain) survive and grow in Biomphalaria glabrata PR albino strain snails, whereas they are encapsulated and die in B. glabrata 10R2 strain snails. These processes also occur in an in vitro system in which the only living cells are those of sporocysts and snail hemolymph. Hemocytes of the susceptible snail are normally not effective in damaging sporocysts. However, when the encounter occurred in the presence of cell-free plasma from resistant snails, previously impotent hemocytes severely damaged sporocysts in 24 hr. The cytotoxic capacity of resistant strain hemocytes was not altered by plasma from susceptible snails. Furthermore, it was retained even when plasma was replaced by culture medium free of snail components. The nature of the plasma factor(s) which facilitated damage by otherwise impotent hemocytes is discussed, and evidence is evaluated for the hypothesis that snail resistance is dependent upon the specificity of cytophilic factors present both in the plasma and on the hemocyte plasma membranes.  相似文献

We investigated interactions between two dominant invertebrate species of intertidal soft-sediment environments of the northwest Atlantic, the mud snail Ilyanassa obsoleta and the burrowing amphipod Corophium volutator, on a mudflat of the upper Bay of Fundy, Canada. Distribution of I. obsoleta on the mudflat was highly patchy and negatively correlated with density of C. volutator. Manipulation of snail density in cages showed that I. obsoleta influences C. volutator; specifically, increasing density of snails reduced density, increased patchiness in distribution, decreased recapture rates and decreased immigration of C. volutator. Ilyanassa obsoleta seems to be affecting C. volutator through an influence on survival rate and emigration rate, although temporal variation in these effects was observed. Given that both I. obsoleta and C. volutator show a preference for tide pools, an important microhabitat on mudflats, snails might have a profound impact on C. volutator population dynamics.  相似文献

BackgroundOncomelania snails serve as the sole intermediate host for Schistosoma japonicum, one of the most important neglected tropical diseases in the world. Afforestation suppression of the Oncomelania hupensis snail has been a long-term effective national strategy to decrease snail density in China. Many previous studies have made clear that vegetation (biotic factors) and soil (abiotic factors) were the basic requirements for snail survival on beaches. Moreover, a lot of research on snail control has been focused on the specific influencing environmental factors for snail survival, such as the vegetation community structure, species composition, diversity index, and the physical and chemical properties of the soil. Most of the existing research has studied the influence of a single factor on snail population density. Conversely, there have been only a few studies focused on the food sources and food composition of the snails. The current research situation on snail control has indicated that the mechanisms underlying ecological snail control have not been systematically characterized. The question of whether biotic or abiotic factors were more important in influencing snail survival remains unclear. Afforestation on beaches has significantly suppressed snail density in China so far. In this study, we proposed that the reduction of snail density was not affected by a single factor but by the interactions of multiple related factors introduced by afforestation. Moreover, different biotic and abiotic factors have significantly different effects on snail control. Therefore the goal of this study was to evaluate the relative importance and interactions of related biotic and abiotic factors on snail density. Methods: Four major vegetation communities: Sedge, Reed, Artificial poplar (3 years of age) and Artificial poplar (5 years of age), on the beaches of the Yangtze River in China were selected for vegetation and snail surveys, as well as for soil sampling. Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis was used to assess the interactions of biotic and abiotic factors in the context of snail ecology. The soil properties were considered as abiotic factors, while algae of Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta phyla were considered to be biotic factors. In the path analysis, the total effect between the variables was the sum of the direct and indirect effects.ResultsThe snail density had significant correlations with soil properties, such as water content, bulk density, capillary porosity and pH value, as well as with all three types of soil algae, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, and Bacillariophyta. Snail density had a direct negative relationship with capillary porosity and soil bulk density, an indirect negative relationship with soil pH value and an indirect positive relationship with soil water content via soil algae. Meanwhile, as an important food source for the snail, the Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta algae had a significant positive correlation with snail density. High soil pH had a negative impact on Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, while soil water content had a positive impact on Chlorophyta, and soil bulk density had a negative impact on Cyanophyta. In addition, the soil pH value and soil bulk density both had negative correlations with soil water content.ConclusionAfforestation of the beach environment can significantly reduce the snail population density by altering ecological factors. Soil algae (biological factors) might be the key element that drives ecological snail control. As important habitat determinants, the impact of the properties of the soil (non-biological factors) on the snail population was largely mediated through soil algae.  相似文献

Rhabditis maupasi, a nematode, inhabits the mantle cavity of terrestrial snails, Helix aspersa, that are imported from Morocco and sold in the food markets of New York City. Most of the nematodes found in living snails are stage-3 larvae which mature and reproduce after the snail has died and decayed. The nematodes were isolated from snails and cultivated with a microflora and then in species isolation, i.e., axenically. Sterile slices of rabbit kidney supported by agar slants served as the initial culture system. Subsequently, a liquid medium was used that contained raw rabbit liver extract. When, instead, raw snail extract was substituted in the liquid medium, nematode larvae did not mature unless the snail extract was digested secondarily or inactivated by heating. Nematodes grow abundantly in dead snails and in treated snail extract but not in living snails or in raw snail extract. The reason is probably not the nematodes' lack of suitable digestive enzymes for snail tissue nor the absence of adequate nutrients in living, microbially poor snails, but rather the presence of an inhibitor in snails.  相似文献

The abundant herbivorous mud-snail Hydrobia ulvae is an ecosystem engineer in soft-bottom intertidal habitats due to its grazing and bioturbation activity. However, mud snails are commonly infected by trematodes that reduce their overall activity, which in turn may affect their impact on the surrounding benthic community. To test this hypothesis, we performed field experiments manipulating both the abundance of uninfected snails (0, 7500 and 15.000 ind. m- 2) and the level of snail parasitism (0, 33 and 100% trematode prevalence) on a Danish mud-flat. The results showed that increasing snail abundance and parasitism generally had opposite effects on the community of microphytobenthos and zoobenthos. Increasing snail density increased the chlorophyll-a concentration in the substrate (enhancement), whereas increasing parasitism decreased it. In accordance, the benthic primary producers were generally less nutrient limited at high snail density and mostly so at high levels of snail parasitism. Moreover, epipsammic diatoms were favoured over epipelic diatoms at increasing snail density, whereas the opposite was evident at increasing snail parasitism. At the community level, increasing snail density increased evenness among epipelic diatoms, whereas increasing snail parasitism decreased evenness and species diversity. Probably through the action of trophic cascades and varying levels of disturbance, the zoobenthic community was influenced by experimental treatments as well. The indirect effects of snail parasitism influenced significantly the abundance of more faunal species (seven) than did snail density (two). At the community level, increasing snail density decreased evenness and lowest species richness coincided with intermediate snail density. In contrast, increasing snail parasitism resulted in increasing evenness and peaking species richness at intermediate level of parasitism. Together, the results show that parasites solely through their impact on the behaviour of a single community member can be significant indirect determinants of community organisation and function.  相似文献

Background

Fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FZT) are a food safety and health concern in Vietnam. Humans and other final hosts acquire these parasites from eating raw or under-cooked fish with FZT metacercariae. Fish raised in ponds are exposed to cercariae shed by snail hosts that are common in fish farm ponds. Previous risk assessment on FZT transmission in the Red River Delta of Vietnam identified carp nursery ponds as major sites of transmission. In this study, we analyzed the association between snail population density and heterophyid trematode infection in snails with the rate of FZT transmission to juvenile fish raised in carp nurseries.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Snail population density and prevalence of trematode (Heterophyidae) infections were determined in 48 carp nurseries producing Rohu juveniles, (Labeo rohita) in the Red River Delta area. Fish samples were examined at 3, 6 and 9 weeks after the juvenile fish were introduced into the ponds. There was a significant positive correlation between prevalence of FZT metacercariae in juvenile fish and density of infected snails. Thus, the odds of infection in juvenile fish were 4.36 and 11.32 times higher for ponds with medium and high density of snails, respectively, compared to ponds where no infected snails were found. Further, the intensity of fish FZT infections increased with the density of infected snails. Interestingly, however, some ponds with no or few infected snails were collected also had high prevalence and intensity of FZT in juvenile fish. This may be due to immigration of cercariae into the pond from external water sources.

Conclusions/Significance

The total number and density of potential host snails and density of host snails infected with heterophyid trematodes in the aquaculture pond is a useful predictor for infections in juvenile fish, although infection levels in juvenile fish can occur despite low density or absence infected snails. This suggests that intervention programs to control FZT infection of fish should include not only intra-pond snail control, but also include water sources of allochthonous cercariae, i.e. canals supplying water to ponds as well as snail habitats outside the pond such as rice fields and surrounding ponds.  相似文献

We aimed to explore the population dynamics of snail in 3 sites of the White Nile in Sudan. More specifically, we aimed to investigate the annual patterns of snail populations that act as intermediate hosts of schistosomes and monthly snail infection rates and ecological characteristics presumably related to snail populations. We collected snails for 1 year monthly at 3 different shore sites in the vicinity of El Shajara along the White Nile river in Khartoum State, Sudan. In addition, we measured air and water temperatures, water turbidities, vegetation coverages, and water depths and current speeds. Most of the collected snails were Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus truncatus. The population densities of snails and their infection rates varied across survey sites. The collected snails liberated S. mansoni and S. haematobium cercariae as well as Amphistome and Echinostome cercariae. Infected snails were found during March–June. The ecological characteristics found to be associated with the absence of snails population were: high turbidity, deep water, low vegetation coverage (near absence of vegetation), high water temperature, and high current speed. To our knowledge, this is the first longitudinal study of the snail population and ecological characteristics in the main basin of the White Nile river.  相似文献

A polyvalent antiserum (anti-HPR) generated in rabbits to cell-free hemolymph from a PR albino (M-line) stock of snail, Biomphalaria glabrata, was employed as a membrane probe to determine if antigens related to snail hemolymph were associated with the surface membranes of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) washed hemocytes from a schistosome-susceptible (PR albino) and refractory (10-R2) stock of B. glabrata. Immunofluorescent and immunoelectron microscopical analyses revealed a strong cross-reactivity between anti-HPR antibodies and hemocytes from both PR albino and 10-R2 snails indicating the presence of surface-associated hemolymph or hemolymph-like antigens. Hemoglobin isolated from PR albino B. glabrata hemolymph competitively inhibited the binding of anti-HPR to hemocytes suggesting that cross-reactive membrane components were, at least in part, antigenically related to snail hemoglobin. Antigens reactive with antihemolymph antibodies also were resistant to protease treatment. No antigenic differences between PR albino and 10-R2 snail hemocytes could be detected due to the heterospecific nature of the probe antiserum, however, it is believed that the major cross-reactive membrane components, e.g., hemoglobin-like determinants, are shared in common by hemocytes of both snail stocks.  相似文献

The egg-laying rate, number of egg masses, number of eggs/mass, number of eggs hatched/snail and egg viability of Biomphalaria glabrata exposed to different doses (5 and 50) of Echinostoma paraensei miracidia were analyzed as indicators of reproductive activity. Polystyrene plates were placed in aquariums containing the snails and every other day for four weeks after infection the plates were removed to count the number of egg masses and eggs laid. After this, the plates were numbered individually and placed in new aquariums free of snails and the egg masses were observed daily to determine the hatching rate. On average there was an increase in the parameters evaluated in the infected snails in relation to the controls (uninfected snails), except for egg viability, which was significantly lower in the groups infected with 50 miracidia. These findings indicate that when infected, this host snail is able to increase its reproductive activity, suggesting an ecological strategy to maintain the species.  相似文献

Field studies on the transmission of the human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, in northeast Thailand: population changes of the snail intermediate host. International Journal for Parasitology16: 545–552. A natural population of Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos, snail vector of the human liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini was sampled for 3 years in a shallow reservoir in Khon Kaen Province, northeast Thailand. During the study period, the habitat experienced a 17-month drought followed by a surging flood. Snails suffered over 90% mortality during drying of the reservoir but died at an average rate of only 5% per month during aestivation. When water returned they migrated to new edge habitats, apparently on floating debris, and reproduced. Peaks in reproduction occurred following spring rains and after the fall monsoon flooding subsided. Normally, two generations are produced per year in seasonal habitats. The prevalence of O. viverrini infection averaged 0.11 % in adult snails over 8 mm in length; smaller snails were not infected.Control of opisthorchiasis through snail control does not appear practical because of the widespread distribution of the snails, their ability to survive in very unstable habitats, and for other reasons concerned with the existence of the fish host between snail and human hosts.  相似文献

Summary The neurosecretory mediodorsal cells that produce a putative growth hormone of the snail Helisoma duryi were studied in fast-growing virgin snails and in slow-growing reproducing snails. There are about 60 mediodorsal cells in clusters on each side of the cerebral commissure of the central nervous system, and they contain dense-cored granules which are 100–200 nm in diameter. The cells of virgin snails have dense Golgi bodies, scattered ER cisternae, and few granules, while those of reproducing snails have pale Golgi bodies, stacked ER cisternae, and numerous granules. Thus the mediodorsal cells of the virgin snails appear to be more active synthetically than those of the reproducing snails. The cells near the endocrine dorsal bodies contain many dorsal body precesses in their membrane interdigitations. There are junction-like interactions between some of the interdigitations. Gap junction-like contacts are seen between mediodorsal cells and glial cells. The axon endings of the mediodorsal cells at the neurohemal area in the labial nerve show more release profiles in virgin snails than in reproducing snails. A daily pattern of release has been observed in reproducing snails, and rates of release are higher in the evening than in the morning.  相似文献

To examine density dependence in the survival, growth, and reproduction of Pomacea canaliculata, we conducted an experiment in which snail densities were manipulated in a paddy field. We released paint-marked snails of 15–20 mm shell height into 12 enclosures (pens) of 16 m2 at one of five densities – 8, 16, 32, 64, or 128 snails per pen. The survival rate of released snails was 95% and was independent of snail density. The snail density had a significant effect on the growth and egg production of individual snails. This density dependence may have been caused by reduced food availability. The females at high density deposited fewer and smaller egg masses than those at low density, and consequently produced fewer eggs. The females at densities 8 and 16 deposited more than 3000 eggs per female, while the females at density 128 oviposited only 414 eggs. The total egg production per pen was, however, higher at higher snail density. The survival rates of juvenile snails were 21%–37% and were independent of adult density. The juvenile density was positively correlated with the total egg production per pen and hence was higher at higher adult density. However, the density of juveniles larger than 5 mm in shell height, i.e., juveniles that can survive an overwintering period, was not significantly different among density treatments. These results suggest that snail density after the overwintering period is independent of the density in the previous year. Thus, density dependence in growth and reproduction might regulate the population of P. canaliculata in paddies. Received: October 23, 1998 / Accepted: July 16, 1999  相似文献
