Euphorbia pedroi is a narrow endemic species with three known populations located in coastal areas of western Portugal. This study focused on the reproductive biology of this species from flowering to dispersal, aiming to identify the factors causing decrease in seed production potential and to assess the spatio-temporal patterns of seed production at the individual and population levels. The abortion of reproductive structures, particularly seeds, represented a major fraction of losses in the potential seed production of E. pedroi. Moth larvae destroyed a variable proportion of cyathia in a large number of plants from the two populations regardless of their degree of isolation. Furthermore, generalist and specialist pre-dispersal seed predators were responsible for temporally variable seed losses unrelated with variables indicative of plant size and fecundity, and showing no consistency at the individual level. Specialist seed-wasps inflicted the highest losses to E. pedroi and their impact was intimately associated with the magnitude of yearly variation in seed production. This finding highlights the role of the inter-annual variation in seed production as a key feature in this plant-seed predator system. The effect of the two groups of seed predators on the reproductive output of E. pedroi was additive and those insects do not seem to exert an important selective pressure on the traits studied. The proportion of intact seeds produced by E. pedroi differed between locations, but not between individuals within each population, highlighting the major contribution of larger plants to the seed pool.  相似文献

Plant reproduction can be strongly affected by herbivory and different features of pollination ecology, such as pollinator visitation rates and capacity for self-pollination. The purpose of this study is to compare the relative impact of herbivory and pollination on maternal reproductive success in endemic Aquilegia viscosa and its widespread congener Aquilegia vulgaris. We conducted herbivore exclusion experiments in two populations of each species in 2 different years and showed that the maternal fertility of A. viscosa was significantly more limited by floral predation and pre-dispersal seed predation than its widespread congener. In the absence of herbivory, A. viscosa retained significantly lower maternal fertility than A. vulgaris. Experimental pollinations in an insect-free glasshouse showed that the two species have an equal seed/ovule ratio both in the absence of pollinators and in the presence of non-limiting outcross pollination. Pollinator visitation rates were significantly higher in populations of A. vulgaris than in populations of A. viscosa. In addition, path analyses showed that spur length, an important trait for pollinator attraction in Aquilegia, and, indirectly sepal and petal width, contribute positively to the seed/ovule ratio in A. vulgaris, but not in A. viscosa. These results indicate that maternal fertility of endemic A. viscosa is strongly reduced by flower and seed predation despite low rates of pollinator visitation, and that pollen or resource limitation in the wild may further reduce maternal fertility. Finally, floral trait variation appears to be decoupled from fertility variation in endemic A. viscosa, which possibly constrains the evolution of reproductive traits in this species.  相似文献

Density dependent processes are known to influence reproduction and establishment of plant populations. In this study, we evaluated the effects of local density and sexual expression on the reproductive success of the rare palm species Geonoma epetiolata in Costa Rica. We classified individuals in two density categories based on distances to the two nearest neighbors and recorded the occurrence of sexual overlap on each individual. Overlap between pistillate and staminate flowers in monoecious plants allows geitonogamous pollination, potentially reducing dependence on mates for reproduction. We measured plant size and light availability, and evaluated the influence of these variables on pollination success, fruit production, fruit abortion and seed mass. Pollination success significantly increased with density but there was no effect of sexual overlap. In contrast, there was no effect of density on the probability of initiated fruit, and a negative effect on fruit set. Fruit abortion was lowest in isolated plants with no sexual overlap. Plant size and light did not contribute to variation in reproductive success. In conclusion, the pollination advantage of plants in dense neighborhoods does not compensate reproductive losses incurred by fruit abortion, possibly due to mating among genetically related individuals. Geonoma epetiolata is threatened by habitat loss and poaching of seeds for the horticultural market. High fruit abortion rates associated with density in G. epetiolata suggest that seed collections from the remnant wild populations of this palm species may cause bottlenecks that further threaten population viability.  相似文献

Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. T. Chang, a plant species that only occurs in a few counties in Hunan, Jiangxi and Zhejiang Provinces and with a relatively small number of individuals, is ranked as a second Class endangered species for conservation in China. We have studied the effect of pollen and resources available to female reproduction, and the reproductive mechanism of “excess flowers with low fruit set” in Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. T. Chang was discussed. Results are as follows Pollen from different sources has significant effects on fruit set and seed set of Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. T. Chang. The pollen source rather than pollen numbers significantly affected reproduction of this species. In wild populations, producing one fruit needs about 54.8 flowers, and one satiation seed needs about 6.60 flowers or 83.19 ovules. After fertilizing, which was propitious to flower development, the abortion rate of flower buds was decreasing, but the flowering rate was increasing. The fruit set and seed set was also significantly increasing, while abortion rate of fruit was significantly decreasing. With the increasing percentages of cutting leaves, the fruit set decreased, but the abortion rate of fruit shows no significant differentiation among treatments. After cutting branches that were puny, broken and insectin-fested branches, the flower number seemed to be decreasing, but the fruit set and seed set all increased significantly. After removing some flowers, the fruit set was calculated with respect to the number of flowers remaining after the treatment increased with increasing of percentages of flower removal, whereas fruit set calculated with respect to the initial number of flowers remained constant, and the mean weights of per fruit and per seed all decreased significantly. Sufficient spatial or temporal heterogeneities in nutrient levels might allow limitation of seed set by resources and pollen in a natural population, while supplying resources may indirectly affect pollination by increasing attraction of the flowers to pollinators. There were very low fruit and seed sets in natural populations of Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. T. Chang. Different factors may have interacted to effect a low fruit set. Among various potential causes of rarity, one explanation could be that a rare species has more narrow physiological tolerances to important environmental variables than does a widespread species. To test this hypothesis photosynthetic performance as a function of irradiance and temperature was compared for the rare cedar glade endemic Echinacea tennesseensis and its widespread prairie congener E. angustifolia following various light and soil moisture preconditioning regimes. Although the species differed in some morphological characteristics such as specific leaf area, both species demonstrated similar photosynthetic light-response curves on a leaf area basis, with low to moderate photosynthetic capacity. Thus no photosynthetic differences were found that could account for the contrasting geographic distributions of the endemic species and its widespread congener.  相似文献

Euphorbia characias is a common myrmecochorous plant of the western Mediterranean Basin whose seeds are dispersed by ants following fruit explosion. The variation in elaiosomes’ fatty acid composition of this species was studied at three hierarchical levels (sub-individual, individual and population) in four populations from the Iberian Peninsula. We found that differences in fruit location on the inflorescence do not seem to influence the fatty acid composition of elaiosomes, providing to each propagule an equal chance of being dispersed. However, significant differences in elaiosome fatty acid composition between individuals and populations were found for most of the compounds identified. The content of oleic acid, a key mediator in the ant–seed interaction, differed widely between populations, probably reflecting geographic variations in co-adaptation between plants and their dispersers. The finding that the fatty acid composition of E. characias elaiosomes is distinct from that of the seed itself, but very similar to that of elaiosomes from unrelated species, reinforces the idea of convergent evolution in the chemical composition of these structures.  相似文献

The factors that reduce the pre-dispersal reproductive potential of Euphorbia dendroides are identified and the magnitude and variability of their effects are examined, both on a spatial and on a temporal scale. The aims of the study were: (1) to assess whether such variation was related to plant attributes describing size and/or fecundity, and (2) to determine the consistency of those effects in plant reproductive success. Pre-dispersal losses were measured over 3 years in a total of 45 plants from two populations in Cabrera island (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean). Two types of insect-plant interactions (a moth that preys on the inflorescences and a wasp that feeds on the seeds) significantly reduced the potential number of seeds of E. dendroides, whereas lack of ovary in the cyathium, ovary abortion or seed abortion were the causes of reproductive loss that can be considered intrinsic to the plant. Significant variation was found both spatially and temporally in their effects, though such variation could not be attributed to the plant traits measured. Moths and wasps were not found to exert any opposing selective pressure on the plant, and their effect was additive. Key factor analyses performed with the data obtained over three seasons showed that the influence of a factor on among-plant variation in total reproductive losses cannot be predicted by the magnitude of the loss caused by such a factor; thus, seed abortion, while representing a low reproductive loss (< 20% of the potential seed production) accounted for the greatest among-plant variation in total losses. The analyses also showed that the contribution of the plant-insect interactions to the variation in total losses varied significantly both spatially and temporally. This lack of consistency, together with the lack of association with the plant traits measured, suggests that the demographic changes produced by these interactions are unlikely to translate into adaptive changes.  相似文献

We studied five reproductive attributes (fruit production and volume, seed content and weight, and seed germination) of different populations of Campanula species occurring along the elevation gradient of Mt Olympos, the highest mountain of Greece (2917 m), in order to examine whether and how they change with elevation, and if there are trade-offs among them. We also studied flower and fruit (reproductive) losses and population features in order to estimate whether there might be a threat to the survival of Campanula species on Mt Olympos. The genus is represented by nine species, ranging from cosmopolitan to steno-endemic. All species were found non-autogamous, and hence they depend on pollinators for their sexual reproduction. At the genus level, there is a trade-off between seed content per fruit and seed weight. At the species level, this is manifested only for C. glomerata, which produces the heaviest seeds, far exceeding all other species, and for C. spatulata, represented on Mt Olympos by two elevation distinct subspecies. Changes of the reproductive attributes are not continuous all along the elevation gradient at the genus level nor are they monotonic at the species level. Nevertheless, upland Campanula populations (≥1500 m) produce fewer fruits per individual, containing fewer but heavier seeds than lowland populations. This indicates a transition from ‘r’ to ‘K’ strategies, from low to high elevations, respectively. The patterns of change of reproductive attributes indicate prevalence of phylogenetic over environmental constraints. Laboratory tests showed that for many populations germinability is high at 15 °C, but there are both inter- and intraspecific differences regarding temperature optima. Ecotypic variation among populations of the same species at different elevations was evident; populations from higher elevations had lower optima and vice versa. Reproductive losses, ranging from zero to over 90%, occurred mainly at the stage of fruit maturation; grazing by sheep and goats was the usual cause. Though such losses might affect the short-lived species (the annual C. sparsa and the biennial C. lingulata), which depend entirely on fruit maturation and seed dispersal for their reproduction, there does not seem to be a serious threat to the survival of Campanula species on the mountain.  相似文献

位置效应在开花植物中广泛存在。以野生巫山淫羊藿种群为研究对象,运用单因素方差分析法,研究位置效应对结实性和花蜜分泌的影响。结果表明:三个巫山淫羊藿种群不同位置的结实率显著差异,其中基部的结实率明显大于中部和顶部; 位置效应对果实重量及果实长、宽的影响均显著,表现出基部>中部>顶部的趋势; 总状花序上不同开花位置对单个果实种子数的影响显著,且基部大于顶部。但位置效应对单个果实种子败育率的影响不显著,均值呈现顶部>中部>基部变化规律; 巫山淫羊藿不同开花位置的花蜜常备量和含糖量的差异显著。三个种群基部的花蜜常备量较高,而花蜜含糖量在顶部较高。因此,对巫山淫羊藿野生种群进行研究与保护时应注意位置效应对生殖成功的影响,选择基部果实进行试验或育种,应维持种群多样性及稳定性。  相似文献

Summary Reports suggest that there is widespread reproductive failure inLinnaea borealis in Britain, Scandinavia, and North America. Our investigations of Scottish populations of this clonal dwarf shrub indicate that, although visited by a number of different insects, pollen transfer in this species is highly effective and principally occurs by small flies (Muscidae). However, natural levels of fruit set varied between populations (from 0% to 25.1%) and reproductive failure was most severe in populations which were composed of single clones. Microscopic examination of stigmas showed that there is no barrier to pollen flow since at least 85% of stigmas have sufficient germinating pollen to effect seed set. Fluorescence microscopy of germinating pollen grains indicates high levels of pollen rejection in the style and only a small proportion of the pollen tubes were able to reach the ovary. It was concluded that lack of xenogamous pollination limits fruit formation in populations ofL. borealis. Reproductive success in an isolated population with extreme reproductive failure was restored by experimental field pollination with viable pollen imported from plants from another population. In Scotland,L. borealis occurs in small, isolated populations and restoration of reproduction can be achieved by the reintroduction of compatible mating partners. This is an important consideration for the conservation management of isolated populations since their long-term recovery may only be possible by translocation of different genotypes from elsewhere into the population. Habitat fragmentation in any part of the species range may impose a potential reproductive bottleneck by causing loss of population diversity and this could explain the low levels of seed set recorded for this species in other parts of its range.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The reproductive cycle of Pistacia lentiscus L. from southern Italy is described with special emphasis on phenology and reproductive success. The species flowers in spring, its fruits ripen in autumn and has a latent ovary period during the summer. Vegetative growth starts immediately after anthesis (end of March) and finishes by the second week of June. Bud sections showed that flower induction occurred a few weeks after shoot development. However, no change in the overall appearance of the buds was noticeable before the following spring. Flowering is very synchronous within a plant, and a clear overlap in the flowering times of the two sexes occurred in the population studied. Although P. lentiscus seems to be highly reproductive because of the numerous fruits generally found on the plants in autumn, its reproductive success (as percent of flowers which develop fruits with seed) is low. Very large numbers of flowers never develop fruit and drop at different stages during fruit development. Moreover, numerous fruits have no seed because of parthenocarpy, embryo abortion or insect damage. In P. lentiscus, low reproductive success is not uniform within the population because the number of empty fruits per plant is highly variable between the plants. Our observations suggest that rain at flowering can make pollination a limiting factor for fruit set because of the reduction in the quantity of available pollen. Since these results are in agreement with those reported for populations in Israel and Spain, such phenomena could be genetically determined, and therefore common to this species throughout the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

Comparative studies of related plant species indicate that evolutionary shifts in mating systems are accompanied by changes in reproductive attributes such as flower size, floral morphology, and pollen/ovule ratio. Recent theoretical work suggests that patterns of investment in reproduction should also change with the mating system. In a glasshouse study, we investigated the extent to which mating system differences among populations of Eichhornia paniculata (Pontederiaceae) were correlated with changes in allocation to male and female function, floral display, and the regulation of investment in reproduction through fruit and ovule abortion. Significant differences in the amount of biomass allocated to reproductive structures were evident among six populations of E. paniculata. As predicted by sex allocation theory, the proportion of dry weight allocated to male function decreased with the outcrossing rate of populations. Six of the eight attributes used to characterize floral display also differed significantly among populations. However, with the exception of two attributes describing the number of flowers produced by inflorescences, these were not correlated with outcrossing rate. Levels of fruit and ovule abortion were determined in two populations with contrasting mating systems under different nutrient and pollination treatments. Virtually all fruits initiated by plants from a self-fertilizing population were matured, while the amount of fruit abortion in an outcrossing population increased with flower production. Ovule abortion was low in both populations. Our results demonstrate that the evolution of self-fertilization in E. paniculata is associated with changes in investment to reproduction that normally distinguish selfing and outcrossing species.  相似文献

Seed dispersal by ants (myrmecochory) is mediated by the presence of a lipid-rich appendage (elaiosome) on the seed that induces a variety of ants to collect the diaspores. When seeds mature or fall onto the ground, these ant species transport them to their nest. After eating the elaiosome, the seed is discarded in nest galleries or outside, in the midden or farther away, where seeds can potentially germinate. The final location of seeds with their elaiosomes removed was evaluated to assess the importance of possible handles (structures that ants can grasp to carry) in transporting ants during re-dispersal experiments of seeds from nests of six species of ants. The results indicate that seeds remained within the nest because the ants were not able to transport them out of the nest. As a consequence of the elaiosome being removed, small ant species could not take Euphorbia characias seeds out of their nests. Only large ant species could remove E. characias seeds from their nests. Attaching an artificial handle to E. characias seeds allowed small ant species to redistribute the seeds from their nests. On the other hand, Rhamnus alaternus seeds that have a natural handle after the elaiosome removal were removed from the nests by both groups of ant species. If a seed has an element that acts as a handle, it will eventually get taken out of the nest. The ants’ size and their mandible gap can determine the outcome of the interaction (i.e. the pattern of the final seed shadow) and as a consequence, could influence the events that take place after the dispersal process.  相似文献

Abstract The aim of this study was to verify differences in the biology of a common widespread species (Mimosa claussenii Benth.) and three rare endemics (Mimosa decorticans Barneby, M. heringeri Barneby, and M. setosissima Taub.). We studied three populations of M. claussenii and one population of each rare species at four localities in central Brazil. We compared the population structure, phenology, fruit set, seed predation, germination, establishment and root/shoot ratio in these six populations. The endemic species occurred in higher densities and smaller individuals were more abundant. When in sympatry, the rare and common species showed a significant negative correlation of density. Mimosa claussenii occurred in drier and rocky environments, whereas M. decorticans and M. setosissima occurred in moister habitats. Rare species had higher levels of fruit set, more viable seeds per individual, and heavier seeds. Mimosa setosissima had the highest level of germination and establishment rate, but did not survive away from its endemism centre. The common species had a higher root/shoot ratio. Overall, the biological aspects studied indicated an advantage in reproductive biology for the rare in relation to the common species. The small geographical range of the rare species may be related to edaphic isolation and climatic changes in the Quaternary.  相似文献

Camellia pubipetala is an endemic and endangered species with small and isolated populations occurring only in karst regions in Guangxi of south China. To understand the reproductive biology of C. pubipetala and its possible influences upon its endangered status, its breeding system and pollination ecology were studied in the Longhushan (LHS) and Longzhao (LZ) populations of this species. The flowering duration of the C. pubipetala populations spanned from late January to early April and anthesis of a single flower usually lasted 5–7 days. This species is homogamous, and the pollen and stigma are viable throughout anthesis. Each bagged flower could secrete 141.5 μL of nectar at a sugar concentration of 25.0% during anthesis. The observed high pollen/ovule ratio, and the results of hand-pollination experiments indicated that this species obligately outcrosses. Open pollination resulted in a significantly decreased fruit set (6.7%) and seed set (38.9%) compared to supplementary pollination treatment (23.3% and 64.7%, respectively), which is indicative of a pollen limitation in the process of pollination. The primary pollinator of C. pubipetala is the sunbird Aethopyga christinae and its visiting frequency is quite low, whereas the honeybee Apis cerana is only an occasional pollinator in wild populations. Low reproductive rates in C. pubipetala were found to be a consequence of few species of pollinators and their low visiting frequency. Pollen limitation may be a crucial factor that contributes to the endangered nature of this species. Artificial pollination and the release of pollinators are effective ways to increase the fruit and seed yield of this species.  相似文献

The alteration of the seed dispersal process due to the Argentine ant invasion and its consequences on emergence, recruitment, distribution, and survival of seedlings of Euphorbia characias were analyzed. The study was carried out in two zones of Mediterranean cork‐oak secondary forest, one invaded by L. humile and the other non‐invaded. Two cohorts of E. characias seedlings (those emerged in 2001 and those emerged in 2002) were studied in three study plots in each zone. The level of seed loss due to lack of viability, parasitizing, and vertebrate predation did not differ between the two zones. The mean seed sowing depth was lower in the invaded zone (13.5 mm) than in the non‐invaded zone (22.4 mm). This depth difference implies a longer time needed for seedlings to emerge in the non‐invaded zone but not a different emergence percent under laboratory conditions. In the field study plots seedling recruitment did not differ between the two zones, probably due to the trade‐off between the differences in the initial number of seeds released (higher in the non‐invaded zone) and the different emergence proportions (higher in the invaded zone). As for the spatial characteristics of emerged seedlings, no differences in the mean seedling distance to the nearest inflorescence or to the nearest seedling or in the pattern of seedling distribution were found between zones. Seedling survival was assessed once a month until they had reached maturity or until all of them had died. The median seedling survival time was similar between the invaded and the non‐invaded zones. Survival curves also did not differ between zones. The present study suggests a functional equivalence of the Argentine ant after the replacement of the native ant species. Despite the initial differences found, the final reproductive success of E. characias was not altered after the invasion. However, the case of E. characias seems unlikely to be the rule, and the seed dynamics of other species may be altered, i.e. increased or decreased, and thus positively or negatively affected by the invasion.  相似文献

There is much interest in the utility of incorporating a common congener in studies of rare plants, because differences between species may be informative for conservation management. We propose here that it is the similarities between such species and even the parameters in which the rare species is comparatively more successful that can provide much useful information and opportunities. This is a benefit not often recognised within these species' comparisons. Bertya ingramii (Euphorbiaceae) is a threatened shrub known only from two small populations (<70 plants in each) in northern New South Wales, Australia. Both populations are in decline with grazed and senescing individuals and very few seedlings. In contrast, Bertya rosmarinifolia is widespread and was found to produce five-fold more seedlings than B. ingramii. A comparative study of these species involving pre- and post-seed release factors (bud to fruit ratios, flowering synchrony, breeding system, seed-set, seed viability and seed removal rates) was undertaken to determine whether there are key factors that reduce the pre- and post-dispersal reproductive potential in B. ingramii. Both species are monoecious, self-compatible and flower from August to November. In both species female flowers appear first and last, with ca. 8 weeks of intermittent synchrony between female and male flowers. In 1996, B. rosmarinifolia produced more than 100% more fruit than B. ingramii, which in part is due to bud production which is two-fold higher in B. rosmarinifolia. Seeds in both species exhibited ca. 97% viability. Germination treatments (80, 100 °C , scarified and control) revealed that for both species manual scarification produced a higher germination rate than heat or controls. An additional treatment of GA3 improved germination rates of B. ingramii seeds over most non-GA3 treatments, indicating that seeds of B. ingramii contain a conditional dormancy mechanism. Almost 100% of B. ingramii seeds were removed from experimental trays by ants and more B. ingramii seeds were removed than B. rosmarinifolia. To break the extinction vortex in which B. ingramii is involved, we propose human-assisted seed dispersal to safe sites, the augmenting of populations with ex situ germinated seedlings and the exclusion of herbivores from B. ingramii populations. The incorporation of the common congener B. rosmarinifolia was useful because it revealed that it too experienced bud loss to moths and seed removal by ants. Threat abatement for B. ingramii, particularly of moth damage, could be trialled on common B. rosmarinifolia.  相似文献

Eremosparton songoricum (Litv.) Vass. is a rare, central Asian desert species which shows lower fruit set and seed set (<16%) than most hermaphroditic species. We hypothesized that fruit production was limited by pollen and resources. To evaluate potential fruit abortion due to pollen limitation, supplemental hand‐pollination was undertaken, the mating system was investigated and the foraging behavior of pollinators was recorded. To investigate possibile resource limitation, flowers and young pods were artificially removed and fertilization were manipulated. The results showed that under natural pollination, the number of pollen deposited on the stigma greatly exceed the number of ovules per ovary. Mating system experiments showed that the species is self‐compatible, but depended on pollinators to set seeds. Supplemental outcross pollination increased fruit set significantly. The most frequent effective pollinator Megachile terminate Morawitz, was observed pollinating many flowers of the same individual plant (74.5±1.3%). These results suggested that fruit production is affected by insufficient outcross pollen rather than by pollen quantity. Removal of 2/3 of the flowers and young pods led to significantly higher fruit set, as did addition of fertilizers (N–P–K: 0.025–0.05–0.013 g, N–P–K: 0.05–0.1–0.025 g) showing that reducing resource acceptors and increasing inorganic resources both helps to improve fruit set. We therefore conclude that reproductive success of E. songoricum is limited by both outcross pollen and available nutrients.  相似文献

Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim.var.longipes H.T.Chang,a plant species that only occurs in a few counties in Hunan,Jiangxi and Zhejiang Provinces and with a relatively small number of individuals,is ranked as a second Class endangered species for conservation in China.We have studied the effect of pollen and resources available to female reproduction,and the reproductive mechanism of "excess flowers with low fruit set" in Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim.var.longipes H.T.Chang was discussed.Results are as follows:Pollen from different sources has significant effects on fruit set and seed set of Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim.var.longipes H.T.Chang.The pollen source rather than pollen numbers significantly affected reproduction of this species.In wild populations,producing one fruit needs about 54.8 flowers,and one satiation seed needs about 6.60 flowers or 83.19 ovules.After fertilizing,which was propitious to flower development,the abortion rate of flower buds was decreasing,but the flowering rate was increasing.The fruit set and seed set was also significantly increasing,while abortion rate of fruit was significantly decreasing.With the increasing percentages of cutting leaves,the fruit set decreased,but the abortion rate of fruit shows no significant differentiation among treatments.After cutting branches that were puny,broken and insectinfested branches,the flower number seemed to be decreasing,but the fruit set and seed set all increased significantly.After removing some flowers,the fruit set was calculated with respect to the number of flowers remaining after the treatment increased with increasing of percentages of flower removal,whereas fruit set calculated with respect to the initial number of flowers remained constant,and the mean weights of per fi'uit and per seed all decreased significantly.Sufficient spatial or temporal heterogeneities in nutrient levels might allow limitation of seed set by resources and pollen in a natural population,while supplying resources may indirectly affect pollination by increasing attraction of the flowers to pollinators.There were very low fruit and seed sets in natural populations ofDisanthus cercidifolius Maxim.var.longipes H.T.Chang.Different factors may have interacted to effect a low fruit set.A joint adoption of the "selection abortion hypothesis","ovary reserve hypothesis" and "male function hypothesis" seems to be the most likely explanation for the reproductive strategy of"excess flowers with few fruit sets" in Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim.var.longipes H.T.Chang.  相似文献
