Many aphid species possess wingless (apterous) and winged (alate) stages, both of which can harbor parasitoids at various developmental stages. Alates can either be parasitized directly or can bear parasitoids eggs or larvae resulting from prior parasitism of alatoid nymphs. Winged aphids bearing parasitoid eggs or young larvae eventually still engage in long-distance flights, thereby facilitating parasitoid dispersal. This may have a number of important implications for biological control of aphids by parasitoids. In this study, we determined the effect of parasitism by Aphelinus varipes (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) on wing development and flight of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines (Hemiptera: Aphididae). We also quantified the influence of aphid flight distance on subsequent A. varipes development. Parasitism by A. varipes was allowed at different A. glycines developmental stages (i.e., alatoid 3rd and 4th-instar nymphs, alates) and subsequent aphid flight was measured using a computer-monitored flight mill. Only 35% of aphids parasitized as L3 alatoid nymphs produced normal winged adults compared to 100% of L4 alatoids. Flight performance of aphids parasitized as 4th-instar alatoid nymphs 24 or 48 h prior to testing was similar to that of un-parasitized alates of identical age, but declined sharply for alates that had been parasitized as 4th-instar alatoid nymphs 72 and 96 h prior to testing. Flight performance of aphids parasitized as alate adults for 24 h was not significantly different from un-parasitized alates of comparable ages. Flight distance did not affect parasitoid larval or pupal development times, or the percent mummification of parasitized aphids. Our results have implications for natural biological control of A. glycines in Asia and classical biological control of the soybean aphid in North America.  相似文献

The solitary parasitoids Aphidius erviHaliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and Aphelinus asychisWalker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) attacked but generally did not oviposit in pea aphids parasitized by the other species. Wasps selectively oviposited in unparasitized hosts when given a choice. Host discrimination depended on the recognition of internal cues. Females of A. asychiseither could not recognize or ignored A. ervi'sexternal host marking pheromone. Under most conditions, A. ervisurvived in superparasitized hosts, killing competing A. asychislarvae by physical attack and possibly physiological suppression. The outcome of larval competition was not affected by oviposition sequence or age difference between larvae; A. asychissurvived only when it had substantially completed larval development before the host was superparasitized by A. ervi.It is suggested that competition for host resources incurs a cost, for the winner in terms of reduced size or increased development time and for the loser in terms of lost progeny and searching time. Consequently, heterospecific host discrimination can be functional. Internal, and probably general, cues enable wasps to recognize and avoid oviposition in hosts already parasitized by an unrelated species.  相似文献

The effects of host age andparasitism by Lysiphlebia mirzaiShuja-Uddin (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on the development, survivorship,reproduction, and life table parameters ofbrown citrus aphid, Toxoptera citricida(Kirkaldy) (Homoptera:Aphididae) were evaluated at 25 ± 1 °C, 80 ± 5% RH, and a photoperiodof 14:10 (L:D) h. The results showed that theduration from initial parasitization tomummification was independent of the aphid ageat the time of parasitization with a mean of6.0 d. Aphids parasitized at the 1st and 2ndinstar stages and 17% of those parasitized atthe 3rd instar stage failed to reach adulthood,while the rest of the aphids parasitized at the3rd and 4th instar stages and as adults reachedmaturity and produced a number of offspringthat increased with age at parasitization. Thelongevity and fecundity of parasitized aphidswere strongly correlated with the aphid age atparasitization. Aphids parasitized at the 1stand 2nd instar stages did not contribute to thepopulation growth of the aphids. The netreproductive rate (Ro) of the aphidsparasitized at the 3rd and 4th instar andadult stages were only 9, 20 and 43% of thatfor nonparasitized aphids, respectively. Hostage preference experiments involving all fiveaphid stages showed L. mirzai couldattack and parasitize all life stages of browncitrus aphid. Parasitism was highest in the2nd instar in a no-choice test, while in achoice test parasitism in the 2nd and 3rdinstars was similar. A relatively high rate ofparasitism was also observed in the 1st instarnymphs in both choice and no-choice tests. Theresults suggest that L. mirzai haspotential as a biocontrol agent of the browncitrus aphid and warrants a furtherevaluation.  相似文献

Oviposition decisions made by members of a guild of natural enemies can have evolved to avoid intraguild predation, potentially avoiding the disruption of the extraguild prey control. We have studied the oviposition preference of the aphidophagous predator Episyrphus balteatus De Geer (Diptera: Syrphidae) within colonies of Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in the presence of two developmental stages of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae). Results from a greenhouse choice experiment showed that E. balteatus females lay significantly fewer eggs in colonies with mummified aphids than in unparasitized colonies. Colonies of parasitized, but not yet mummified did not contain significantly fewer eggs than colonies with unparasitized aphids. In three no-choice experiments, we assessed stimuli coming from aphid honeydew, from the aphids themselves and also from extracts of the aphid bodies, and all of these stimuli mediate the discrimination of mummified aphids from healthy aphids. To a lesser extent these stimuli also contribute to the discrimination against aphids that are parasitized but not yet mummified. These results suggest that the effects of these two species could be complementary for the control of M. persicae, since the species that acts as an intraguild predator, E. balteatus, avoids ovipositing on aphid colonies parasitized by the intraguild prey, A. colemani.  相似文献

Intraspecific host discrimination is frequently found in solitary parasitoids, but interspecific host discrimination, where female parasitoids recognize hosts already parasitized by females of other species, is rare. This particular behaviour appears to be adaptive only under specific circumstances. In this paper, we quantified intraspecific host discrimination in Anaphes n. sp. (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), an endoparasitoid of the eggs of Listronotus oregonensis (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and interspecific host discrimination toward eggs parasitized by Anaphes sordidatus (Girault), a sympatric species competing for the same resource in similar habitats. To examine host discrimination, choice experiments were used where the females had to choose between different categories of eggs (unparasitized, parasitized by Anaphes n. sp. or A. sordidatus). Superparasitism and multiparasitism were avoided in experiments where the female had a choice between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by the same female, by a conspecific or by a female A. sordidatus. When all hosts available were parasitized, conspecific superparasitism occurred more often than self-superparasitism or multiparasitism. These results indicated that females Anaphes n. sp. were capable of self-, conspecific and interspecific discrimination. Self-discrimination followed recognition of an external marking while interspecific discrimination occurred mostly after insertion of the ovipositor. Interspecific discrimination could result from the recent speciation of these species and could be associated with a genotypic discrimination. This behavior appears to be adaptive because of the competition for common hosts between the two parasitoid species.  相似文献

A variety of host-related substances was assessed in relation to their ability to induce arrestment and antennal examination behavior in adult females of the aphid hyperparasitoid Alloxysta victrix (Westwood). In laboratory bioassays, whole-body homogenates of both unparasitized host aphids [Myzus persicae (Sulzer)] and those parasitized by the primary parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck failed to elicit a response. However, significant kairomonal activity was associated with aphid cornicle secretions, aphid honeydew, and solvent extracts of parasitized aphids. Solvent extracts of unparasitized aphids (in either hexane or butan-1-ol) failed to elicit arrestment or antennal examination behavior in hyperparsitoid females. The response to aphid honeydew was significantly lower in experienced females than in naive individuals, suggesting that even relatively strong innate responses can be modified by learning.  相似文献

The developmental interaction between the egg/larval parasitoid,Ascogaster reticulatus Watanabe (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and its host,Adoxophyes sp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was examined. Prior to the egress of a final-instar parasitoid larva from the 4th-instar host larva, host weight decreased by 22% from the maximum weight. The final body weight of a host larva was 27% of the maximum weight of a healthy 5th-instar host. Food consumption was significantly reduced in both 3rd-and 4th-instar parasitized larvae compared with healthy ones. In the 4th instar, a parasitized larva consumed 28% less artificial diet and produced less frass than a healthy larva. The growth rate of the endoparasitoid larvae greatly increased after their host's molt to the 4th instar. Parasitoid larval volume increased 40 fold in the 4th-instar host.   相似文献

One egg parasite, 7 larval parasites, 2 pupal parasites and 3 larval hyperparasites were recorded parasitizing the spotted stalk borer,Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) on maize and grain sorghum in South Africa.Trichogrammatoidea lutea Girault [Trichogrammatidae] parasitized eggs ofC. partellus mainly in mid-summer. The larval parasites were active throughout the season with occasional peaks of up to 75% parasitism.Apanteles sesamiae Cameron [Braconidae], proved to be the most abundant larval parasite. It was recorded fromca. 93% of parasitized larvae but its efficiency was reduced by the hyperparasite,Aphanogmus fijiensis (Ferriére) [Ceraphronidae], which reached sometimes up to 100% parasitism on cocoons ofA. sesamiae. The efficiency ofIphiaulax sp. [Braconidae], the 2nd most abundant larval parasite, was also hindered by the hyperparasite,Eurytoma sp. [Eurytomidae] Pupal parasites were sometimes very abundant reaching up to 100% parasitism without any interference by hyperparasites. The parasitic dinoflagellate Amoebophrya sp. ex Karlodinium veneficum was used to test two hypotheses: (1) infection of cells decreases with increasing host toxicity and (2) parasitism causes the catabolism of host toxin. To test the first hypothesis, host strains differing in toxin content were inoculated with dinospores of Amoebophrya sp. derived from infected cultures of toxic and non-toxic K. veneficum, with resulting infections assessed following 24-h incubations. Contrary to expectations, infection of K. veneficum by Amoebophrya sp. was positively correlated with host toxicity. To examine the second hypothesis, synchronous infection with >80% of cells being parasitized was induced using a toxic strain of K. veneficum, and total toxin concentration (intracellular plus extracellular levels of KmTX1) was followed over the 3-day infection cycle. Toxin content ml−1 increased with growth of K. veneficum in uninfected control cultures, but declined in infected cultures as the parasite completed its life cycle. On a cellular basis, toxin content of infected and uninfected cultures differed little during the experiment, suggesting that the parasite does not actively catabolise host toxin. Rather, infection appears to promote degradation of toxins via death of host cells and subsequent bacterial activity. Results indicate that Amoebophrya sp. ex K. veneficum has greater potential to impact toxic strains relative to non-toxic host strains in natural systems. Thus, Amoebophrya sp. ex. K. veneficum may limit the occurrence of toxic K. veneficum blooms in marine and estuarine environments, while simultaneously functioning as a pathway for dissipation of host toxin.  相似文献

In laboratory host-preference studies,Trichogramma platneri Nagarkatti (Hym.: Trichogrammatidae) females, reared on viable codling moth,Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lep.: Tortricidae) eggs, parasitized significantly more viable than nonviable codling moth eggs produced by cobalt 60 irradiated adults. This ovipositional preference was maintained when competition increased per host egg. Similarly, one, three and fiveT. platneri females consistently oviposited more eggs into viable versus nonviable host eggs. A single femaleT. platneri parasitized a similar number of viableC. pomonella and three-lined leafroller,Pandemis limitata (Robinson) (Lep.: Tortricidae) eggs. However, as the number of females per host eggs increased, a significantly larger number of codling moth versus leafroller eggs were parasitized. One, three and fiveTrichogramma females parasitized significantly moreP. limitata versus nonviableC. pomonella eggs. NonviableC. pomonella eggs deflated to less than 25% of their original volume in four and ten days when held under dry and humid conditions respectively. The blackened prepupal stage of the parasitoid generally occurred in the nonviableC. pomonella eggs four days post-parasitization whereas the parasitized viable eggs blackened zero to one day earlier. Incubation under dry or humid conditions did not appear to influence the number of parasitized eggs that were able to blacken and show evidence of parasitism. Atta laevigata (Smith) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) foragers collected in the field and parasitized by Apocephalus attophilus Borgmeier (Diptera: Phoridae) (1.2% of sampled ants) were larger and had lower survival rates than similar non-parasitized foragers. Moreover, the size of parasitized ants was significantly correlated with the number of A. attophilus puparia and percentage of adult emergence. These results suggest that host size is important for the reproductive success of A. attophilus. Different from most ant-parasitizing phorids, A. attophilus exhibits a pre-oviposition behavior that involves walking towards the host and inspecting it, and this careful approach may be responsible for a relatively low percentage of parasitoid detection by A. laevigata. When an exotic resource (Acalypha sp. leaves) was placed on ants' foraging trails, more foragers were recruited, which resulted in the attraction of A. attophilus. The number and recruiting rates of small workers (minima) were significantly higher on leaves visited by A. attophilus, but larger foragers showed no response to phorids. These results demonstrated that minima react to the presence of A. attophilus and suggest a defensive role of these ants against phorid parasitism.  相似文献

Orangestriped oakworm, Anisota senatoria (J. E. Smith), has caused widespread defoliation of oak trees in the urban landscape of southeastern Virginia since 1985. Egg masses were collected from 1988 to 1990 to determine the impact of native egg parasites on A. senatoria populations. The most abundant egg parasite was Aprostocetus new sp. and mean egg mass parasitism was 24.6%. The eupelmid Anastatus hirtus (Ashmead), a new host record, parasitized a mean of 11.7% of A. senatoria egg masses. The encyrtid Ooencytrus sp., a new host record, had a mean egg mass parasitism of 0.09%. Inundative releases of Trichogramma minutum (Riley) in 1989 and 1990 did not increase parasitism rates and mean egg mass parasitism was 2.3%. Parasitism of first generation A. senatoria egg masses was higher compared with second generation. The four egg parasites collected in this study parasitized 30% of A. senatoria egg masses and within egg mass parasitism was 7.9%. These relatively low parasitism rates may partially explain the presence of consistently high A. senatoria populations in southeastern Virginia.  相似文献

Four aphidiine parasitoid species (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were evaluated with respect to their potential to controlAphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) in glasshouse cucumbers. In a laboratory experiment thirty cotton aphids were offered to individual females for two hours.Aphidius matricariae Haliday parasitized less than six percent of the aphids and was ruled out as potential biological control agent.Ephedrus cerasicola Stary andLysiphlebus testaceipes Cresson parasitized 23 and 26 percent of the aphids, respectively.Aphidius colemani Viereck parasitized 72 to 80 percent of the aphids. With the latter three species, experiments were performed in small glasshouses with cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L. cv. ‘Aramon’). As in the laboratory testA. colemani performed best; significantly more colonies were found and parasitization rates in the colonies were higher byA. colemani than byE. cerasicola andL. testaceipes. Because of the good correspondence between laboratory and glasshouse experiments, it is suggested that bad performance of an aphid parasitoid species in a simple laboratory trial might be sufficient evidence to disregard this species for further tests.  相似文献

Phymastichus coffea (LaSalle) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is an African endoparasitoid of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) that has been introduced to several countries to control this important pest. In the present study we performed a series of laboratory experiments in order to determine if there was evidence of host discrimination and superparasitism in P. coffea. Our choice experiments demonstrate that P. coffea females showed significant preference to attack unparasitized hosts, rather than those parasitized conspecifically. No significant preferences were detected in self-specific attacks between parasitized hosts and the healthy ones. A further dissection of hosts sequentially attacked either self or conspecifically, revealed that there were no more than two eggs per host. As P. coffea is a species that normally allocates two eggs per host in a single attack, we assumed that females were able to attack already parasitized hosts, but they did not lay eggs in them. Based on this fact, we conclude that there is a host discrimination ability in P. coffea females. With respect to the superparasitism by P. coffea using non-choice experiments, there was no significant difference between self-specific or conspecific attacks with respect to the control after one or two successive attacks. Conspecific attacks yielded the largest numbers of eggs after 3rd, 4th and 5th attacks and significant differences were found between this treatment and the control. The maximum number of eggs found in a single host was six individuals (conspecific treatment). These results confirmed that P. coffea usually laid two eggs per host; however, when there are no hosts available, conspecific attacks can result in the superparasitism in this species.  相似文献

The parasitoids associated with the common pistachio psylla, Agonoscena pistaciae Burckhardt and Lauterer, were investigated at three pistachio plantations in Rafsanjan, Iran. Of the 6504 wasps emerging from mummified psyllids, 46% were the primary parasitoid Psyllaephagus pistaciae Ferrière, and the remaining 54% represented six species of hymenopterous hyperparasitoids, including Chartocerus kurdjumovi (Nikol’skaja), Marietta picta (André), Pachyneuron aphidis (Bouché), Pachyneuron muscarum (Linnaeus), Psyllaphycus diaphorinae (Hayat), and Syrphophagus aphidivorus (Mayr). Lysiphlebus fabarum Marshall, the parasitoid of Aphis gossypii Glover and Aphis craccivora Koch present on weeds, was found to be an alternative host for three major hyperparasitoids of A. pistaciae. The most abundant hyperparasitoid was S. aphidivorus, appearing during the growing season in all trial locations on psyllids and aphids in pistachio orchards. The weed-infesting aphids, along with their primary parasitoid, can act as a reservoir of A. pistaciae secondary parasitoids. Therefore, parasitized aphids allow populations of secondary parasitoids to increase and consequently to apply higher pressure on P. pistaciae. We detected that two primary parasitoid species, including P. pistaciae and L. fabarum, attacking different species of hosts interact indirectly through shared secondary parasitism. It is suggested that the community structure of A. pistaciae may be influenced by apparent competition, although more work is needed to provide firm evidence.  相似文献

Foraging behaviour and host-instar preference of young and old females of the solitary aphid parasitoid,Lysiphlebus cardui Marshall (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), were studied in the laboratory. The analysis of interactions between parasitoids and different stages ofAphis fabae cirsiiacanthoidis Scop. (Homoptera: Aphididae) revealed that encounter rates between aphids and parasitoid females and defence reactions of the aphids influenced the degree to which a particular aphid age class is parasitized. Encounter rates between hosts and parasitoid females depended on the foraging pattern of the parasitoid, which varied with age. In mixed aphid colonies patch residence time increased with parasitoid age. Furthermore, younger parasitoids (≦1 day old) laid more eggs into second and third instars, while older parasitoids (≧4 days old) did not show distinct host instar preferences. It is suggested that the oviposition behaviour ofL. cardui is influenced by the physiological state, i.e. the age of the wasp.  相似文献

The effect of interspecific competition between the solitary endoparasitoid Glyptapanteles porthetriae Muesebeck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and the gregarious Glyptapanteles liparidis Bouché (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), was investigated in larvae of Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae). Host larvae were parasitized by both wasp species simultaneously in premolt to the 2nd or the 3rd host instar or in an additional approach with a 4-day delay in parasitization by the second wasp species. Host acceptance experiments revealed that both wasp species do not discriminate between unparasitized host larvae and larvae parasitized previously by the same or the other species. In more than 90% female wasps parasitized the larva they encountered first. During the period of endoparasitic development, larvae of the competing parasitoid species never attacked the egg stage of the other species. When host larvae were parasitized simultaneously by both wasp species, the rate of successful development of both species depended on the age of the host larva at the time of its parasitization; G. liparidis emerged successfully from 44% of host larvae parasitized during the premolt to 2nd instar, G. porthetriae from 28%, and in 20% of the hosts both parasitoid species were able to develop in one gypsy moth larva. However, when host larvae were parasitized simultaneously during premolt to the 3rd instar, G. liparidis was successful in 90% of the hosts, compared to 8% from which only G. porthetriae emerged. In the experiments with delayed oviposition, generally the species that oviposited first succeeded in completing its larval development. Larvae of the species ovipositing with four days delay were frequently attacked and killed by larvae of the first parasitizing species or suffered reduced growth. As the secondary parasitoid species, G. porthetriae-larvae were never able to complete their development, whereas G. liparidis developed successfully in at least 12,5% of the multiparasitized host larvae. Thus, multiparasitism of gypsy moth larvae by both Glyptapanteles species corresponds to the contest type; however, G. porthetriae is only able to develop successfully as the primary parasitoid of young host larvae.  相似文献

Embryos of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), were successfully parasitized by Aphidius smithi Sharma & Subba Rao while still inside their mother. Parasites from embryos were much smaller, laid fewer eggs, but survived as long as their counterparts that had developed in adult viviparous aphids. Lifetime fecundity was positively correlated with wasp size, as measured by dry weight at the time of death. A. smithi females produced the same offspring sex ratio at eclosion on both host classes, although emergence was significantly lower from mummified adult aphids than from embryos. The data are discussed with regard to progeny and sex allocation decisions by solitary hymenopterous parasites. It is suggested that, in A. smithi, the decision to lay a fertilized or unfertilized egg is influenced by the host's overall size, rather than by the size and quality of a smaller target area inside the host, such as embryos.  相似文献

Life table data forAphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae), an important pest in glasshouse cucumber crops, were studied at 20, 25 and 30°C on two cucumber cultivars (Cucumis sativus L.) in controlled climate cabinets. The development time on the cucumber cv. ‘Sporu’ ranged from 4.8 days at 20°C to 3.2 days at 30°C. Immature mortality was approximately 20% and did not differ between temperatures. Most mortality occurred during the first instar. Reproduction periods did not differ among temperatures, but at 25 and 30°C more nymphs were produced (65.9 and 69.8 nymphs/♀, respectively) than at 20°C (59,9 nymphs/♀) because of a higher daily reproduction. Intrinsic rate of increase was greatest at 25°C (r m =0.556 day−1). At 20 and 30°C the intrinsic rate of increase was 0.426 and 0.510, respectively. On cv. ‘Aramon’, the development time ofA. gossypii was approximately 20% longer at all temperatures. Immature mortality did not differ between the two cultivars. The intrinsic rate of increase on cv. ‘Aramon’ was 15% smaller than on cv. ‘Sporu’. The use of cucumber cultivars partially resistant to aphids is discussed in relation to biological control of cotton aphid in glasshouses. Development time and immature mortality on leaves of the middle and upper leaf layer of glasshouse grown cucumber plants (cv. ‘Aramon’) were comparable to development in the controlled climate cabinets. On the lower leaves immature mortality was much higher (approximately 82%) than on leaves of the middle (24.0%) and upper leaf layer (24.5%). Reproduction was less on the lower leaf layer (45.9, 70.5 and 70.1 nymphs/♀ on leaves of the lower, middle and upper leaf layer, respectively). Aphids, successfully parasitized byAphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) only reproduced when they were parasitized after the third instar. Fecundity was 0.1 to 0.9 and 10.5 to 13.3 nymphs/♀ for aphids parasitized in the fourth instar or as adults, respectively. Reproduction of aphids that were stung but survived the attack was lower than for aphids not stung. Average longevity of these aphids was equal to the longevity of aphids not stung byA. colemani.  相似文献

We collected 22,769 adult female mosquitoes, representing 27 species, from light traps in Norfolk, Virginia (2006–2007) and examined them to assess infestation by larval mites. Mosquitoes were parasitized by two species of aquatic (Acari: Arrenuridae: Arrenurus) and three species of terrestrial mites (Acari: Erythraeidae). The prevalence of infestation varied from 0.55% (2006) to 0.17% (2007). The mean intensity of parasitism ranged from 3.6 mites per host (2006) to 1.8 mites per host (2007). The most common host species for aquatic mites was Culex erraticus, while the most common host for terrestrial mites was Anopheles quadrimaculatus. Relationships between biotic and abiotic factors were investigated in an attempt to provide insight into temporal, spatial, and interspecific variation in mite–mosquito interactions. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the mode of attachment for larval mites. While the prevalence of aquatic mite parasitism was correlated for Culex erraticus, the invasive mosquito, Aedes albopictus, was never parasitized through the duration of the study.
