Mink ovariectomized 14 days after the first of two matings received injections of 2 mg MPA, the same MPA treatment + an oestradiol-17 beta implant or no replacement therapy. Some mink were ovariectomized after implantation and given a single dose of 2 mg MPA or no replacement therapy. MPA persisted in the serum at detectable levels for 13 or more days in all mink treated. MPA and MPA + oestradiol induced uterine growth but neither treatment was capable of inducing embryo implantation. More embryos were retained in mink treated with MPA alone and these appeared to be viable. Implanted embryos persisted for a longer period in animals that were ovariectomized and treated with MPA. MPA neither supported pregnancy nor permitted parturition. Serum LH was elevated by 1 week after ovariectomy and elevations persisted for a further 20 or more days. While MPA alone had no apparent negative feedback effects on LH, animals that received MPA + oestradiol did not display any elevation of LH, suggesting that oestradiol or a combination of MPA and oestradiol has a potent negative feedback in mink.  相似文献

The dependence of activated mammary number on litter size was studied in standard type farmed mink in an attempt to clarify its effects on early kit mortality. The results showed highly positive correlations between litter size and the number of activated teats at 2 days, 4 weeks and 8 weeks of age. Total kit mortality was rather low and independent of litter size. The body weights of the mothers were independent of either litter size or age during the lactation period. The body weights of male kits were of the same order of magnitude in spite of litter size or age until weaning. In female kits, the body weights in the largest litters were lowest at weaning.  相似文献

Female ranch mink of the Pearl variety were injected with saline (100 μl), GnRH (2 μg) or HCG (50 IU) and mated 7, 8 or 9 days later. Mean number of young in litter (± SEM) for saline treated females was 1.4 ± 0.87; GnRH 4.8 ± 0.55 and HCG 3.4 ± 0.9. A fourth group were injected with GnRH immediately after each of two matings and resultant mean litter size in this group was 5.7 ± 0.44. The results suggest that GnRH can effectively replace the first mating in ranch mink and that GnRH after each of two matings may enhance preovulatory development and/or ovulation.  相似文献

The objective was to determine the effects of the duration of progesterone exposure during the ovulatory wave on fertility (pregnancy rate) in beef cattle. We tested the hypothesis that short-progesterone exposure during the growing and early-static phase of the ovulatory follicle (analogous to the ovulatory wave of 3-wave cycles) is associated with higher fertility than a longer duration of exposure (analogous to the ovulatory wave of 2-wave cycles). Three to 5 days after ovulation, beef heifers (n = 172) and suckled beef cows (n = 193) were given an intravaginal progesterone-releasing device (CIDR) and 2.5 mg estradiol - 17β +50 mg progesterone im to induce a new follicular wave. Cattle were allocated to short- or long-progesterone exposure groups (for 3 and 6 d after wave emergence, respectively) after which prostaglandin F was administered and CIDR were removed. Forty-eight hours later, all cattle were given 12.5 mg pLH and artificially inseminated (AI) with frozen-thawed semen. The diameter of the two largest follicles and the corpus luteum were measured by transrectal ultrasonography at CIDR removal, insemination, and 36 h after insemination. Pregnancy diagnosis was done ultrasonically 38 and 65 d post-AI. There was no difference in pregnancy rates in short- vs long-progesterone exposure in heifers (53 vs 47%, P = 0.44) or cows (63 vs 58%, P = 0.51). However, the diameter of the ovulatory follicle at CIDR removal and AI was smaller in short- than in long-progesterone groups (P < 0.02), and larger in cows than in heifers (P < 0.006). In conclusion, short-progesterone exposure during the growing and early-static phase of the ovulatory follicle (similar to 3-wave cycles) was not associated with higher fertility than a longer progesterone exposure (similar to 2-wave cycles).  相似文献

Mink skin size in Finland, as well as in other countries, has increased considerably during last decade. However, there are signs that selection for large body size has a negative impact on litter size (LS) and also for survival of kits. Therefore, it is important to study the genetic relationships among fertility traits and animal size (AS). The variance components for age at first mating (AFM) and first three parity LS and AS were estimated using multi-trait restricted maximum likelihood animal model. Data included 82 945 animals born during 1990 to 2004, originating from nine farms. Heritability estimates for the fertility traits were from 0.10 to 0.15. For AS, heritability was estimated to be 0.18. Genetic correlation between AS and all fertility traits was estimated to be negative (varying from -0.004 to -0.38). It is important to recognize this antagonistic relationship and include the reproductive traits into breeding goals to maintain good reproductive performance when selecting for increased body size and hence larger pelts in fur animals. Genetic correlations between the traits should be accounted in breeding value evaluations by using a multi-trait model. Including AFM into breeding value estimation would also improve the accuracy of breeding value estimation for fertility, because females missing the first LS still have record on AFM.  相似文献

Effect of Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) at a dose level of 35mg/Kg body weight per week for four weeks on the intestinal uptake of nutrients viz glucose, amino acids, (alanine and leucine), calcium and zinc has been investigated in protein-deficient female rats. The administration of MPA was found to enhance significantly the uptake of glucose and amino acids in both the pair-fed and the protein-deficient rats. In contrast, calcium uptake was depressed as a result of treatment with the drug as well as protein-deficiency. The uptake of zinc was not affected on drug administration. This steroidal contraceptive caused elevation in sodium-dependent glucose uptake, while the sodium-independent uptake remained unaltered. The kinetic parameters of glucose and leucine uptake indicate that MPA might be inducing the transport carrier protein of these nutrients as elevation in Vmax of these nutrients transport system was observed following its administration.  相似文献

In the mink industry, feed costs are the largest variable expense and breeding for feed efficient animals is warranted. Implementation of selection for feed efficiency must consider the relationships between feed efficiency and the current selection traits BW and litter size. Often, feed intake (FI) is recorded on a cage with a male and a female and there is sexual dimorphism that needs to be accounted for. Study aims were to (1) model group recorded FI accounting for sexual dimorphism, (2) derive genetic residual feed intake (RFI) as a measure of feed efficiency, (3) examine the relationship between feed efficiency and BW in males (BWM) and females (BWF) and litter size at day 21 after whelping (LS21) in Danish brown mink and (4) investigate direct and correlated response to selection on each trait of interest. Feed intake records from 9574 cages, BW records on 16 782 males and 16 875 females and LS21 records on 6446 yearling females were used for analysis. Genetic parameters for FI, BWM, BWF and LS21 were obtained using a multivariate animal model, yielding sex-specific additive genetic variances for FI and BW to account for sexual dimorphism. The analysis was performed in a Bayesian setting using Gibbs sampling, and genetic RFI was obtained from the conditional distribution of FI given BW using genetic regression coefficients. Responses to single trait selection were defined as the posterior distribution of genetic superiority of the top 10% of animals after conditioning on the genetic trends. The heritabilities ranged from 0.13 for RFI in females and LS21 to 0.59 for BWF. Genetic correlations between BW in both sexes and LS21 and FI in both sexes were unfavorable, and single trait selection on BW in either sex showed increased FI in both sexes and reduced litter size. Due to the definition of RFI and high genetic correlation between BWM and BWF, selection on RFI did not significantly alter BW. In addition, selection on RFI in either sex did not affect LS21. Genetic correlation between sexes for FI and BW was high but significantly lower than unity. The high correlations across sex allowed for selection on standardized averages of animals’ breeding values (BVs) for RFI, FI and BW, which yielded selection responses approximately equal to the responses obtained using the sex-specific BVs. The results illustrate the possibility of selecting against RFI in mink with no negative effects on BW and litter size.  相似文献

In 1980 and 1981, respectively, 12 and 19 one-year-old mink females of standard and jetblack breeds were used to determine the progesterone level approximately at the time of expected implantation. Blood samples were collected every 2 to 3 days or daily in order to accurately estimate the time of increase in plasma progesterone levels. The results indicate that the progesterone level increased to above 10 ng/ml, 31.6 (sigma = 1.3) days prior to parturition on the average. This was supported by physiological explanations. The date of mating in mink had an effect on the date of increase in plasma progesterone. Matings at a late date in the estrous period, reduced the period of delay before implantation. Nevertheless, both the dates of implantation and parturition were delayed compared with the results of earlier matings in mink.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of nest box climate on early mink kit mortality and growth. We hypothesised that litters in warm nest boxes experience less hypothermia-induced mortality and higher growth rates during the 1st week of life. This study included data from 749, 1-year-old breeding dams with access to nesting materials. Kits were weighed on days 1 and 7, dead kits were collected daily from birth until day 7 after birth, and nest climate was measured continuously from days 1 to 6. We tested the influences of the following daily temperature (T) and humidity (H) parameters on the number of live-born kit deaths and kit growth: Tmean, Tmin, Tmax, Tvar (fluctuation) and Hmean. The nest microclimate experienced by the kits was buffered against the ambient climate, with higher temperatures and reduced climate fluctuation. Most (77.0%) live-born kit deaths in the 1st week occurred on days 0 and 1. Seven of 15 climate parameters on days 1 to 3 had significant effects on live-born kit mortality. However, conflicting effects among days, marginal effects and late effects indicated that climate was not the primary cause of kit mortality. Five of 30 climate parameters had significant effects on kit growth. Few and conflicting effects indicated that the climate effect on growth was negligible. One exception was that large nest temperature fluctuations on day 1 were associated with reduced deaths of live-born kit (P<0.001) and increased kit growth (P=0.003). Litter size affected kit vitality; larger total litter size at birth was associated with greater risks of kit death (P<0.001) and reduced growth (P<0.001). The number of living kits in litters had the opposite effect, as kits in large liveborn litters had a reduced risk of death (P<0.001) and those with large mean litter size on days 1 to 7 had increased growth (P=0.026). Nest box temperature had little effect on early kit survival and growth, which could be due to dams’ additional maternal behaviour. Therefore, we cannot confirm that temperature is the primary reason for kit mortality, under the conditions of plenty straw access for maternal nest building. Instead, prenatal and/or parturient litter size is the primary factor influencing early kit vitality. The results indicate that the focus should be on litter size and dam welfare around the times of gestation and birth to increase early kit survival in farmed mink.  相似文献

Blood haematocrit and liveweight were determined throughout pregnancy and the post-partum period in 217 Booroola Merino and Merino ewes in order to relate these parameters to litter size at birth. In pregnant ewes, haematocrit declined from three until five months gestation, rose immediately after parturition then declined until two months post-partum. During the third to fifth month of gestation, haematocrit decreased in proportion to litter size. Nonpregnant ewes, measured at similar intervals, did not show the same pattern. Haematocrit of nonpregnant animals was higher than that of triplet-bearing ewes at three, four and five months gestation, but was only significantly different to single- and twin-bearing ewes at five months. The liveweight of pregnant ewes increased up to parturition and then declined until two months post-partum. The liveweight of nonpregnant ewes increased over the experimental period. It was concluded that the number of foetuses a ewe carried had significant effects on the decline in haematocrit during pregnancy. Haematocrit was not a precise indicator of litter size in sheep. Haematocrit, ewe liveweight and ovulation rate together in a multiple regression only accounted for 37% of the variation in litter size.  相似文献

Female pigs were assigned to three groups at 94 days of age: a control group (CTR), a group undergoing the ligation and severing of the left oviduct (LIG), and a group undergoing right hysteroovariectomy (HHO). They were inseminated at 307 days of age. At 35 days of pregnancy, an ultrasonic transit time flow probe was implanted around the middle artery of one uterine horn in 33 sows and uterine blood flow was measured during thirteen 24-h periods between 44 and 111 days. Despite large differences in ovulation rate per uterine horn (4.8, 8.3 and 16.9 in the LIG, CTR and HHO groups, respectively), variation of litter size was considerably reduced with advancement of pregnancy (3.0, 6.6 and 10.8 foetuses per uterine horn at 35 days, and 3.0, 5.8 and 4.9 at 112 days (slaughter), respectively). Uterine blood flow increased linearly during pregnancy. It was lower in the LIG sows (0.82 to 1.74 L x min(-1) x horn(-1) from 44 to 111 days) than in the CTR and HHO sows (1.22 to 2.84 and 1.09 to 2.63 L x min(-1) x horn(1), respectively). It was more closely related to litter weight than to litter size and amounted to 0.42 L x min(-1) x kg foetus(-1) at 111 days. Uterine blood flow per foetus decreased when litter size increased. It increased from 0.31 to 0.72, 0.26 to 0.60 and 0.20 to 0.43 L x min(-1) x foetus(-1) from 44 to 111 days when there were 2 to 3, 4 to 5, and 6 to 8 foetuses in the uterine horn, respectively. This explains why piglets from large litters are lighter at birth.  相似文献

Summary The influence of male-induced early puberty on female reproductive rate was determined in three lines of mice differing in litter size and body weight. The lines originated from a single base population and had undergone 20 generations of selection for the following criteria: large litter size at birth (L+), large litter size and small 6-week body weight (L+W), or small litter size and large 6-week body weight (LW+). Females were paired with a mature intact male of the same line at 3, 5 or 7 weeks of age. Mean mating age, averaged over lines, was 26.5 ± .3, 38.3 ± .3 and 52.7 ± .3 days. Exposure to a mature male accelerated female sexual maturation in each line. When contrasted with their sibs mated at a later age, early-pregnant females from each line exhibited a decline in one or more component of reproductive performance, suggesting that the physiological state of the very young female was not optimum for normal pregnancy. In comparisons of early and later mating ages, all three lines showed a decreased littering rate at first mating, number born alive, and individual birth weight of progeny adjusted for litter size; L+ and L+W mice showed an increased perinatal mortality rate; L+ and LW+ had a reduction in litter size at birth. When the L+, L+W and LW+ lines were compared with an unselected strain and a line selected for high postweaning gain in similar experiments, a genotype by environment interaction was apparent since all lines did not respond in a similar manner to early mating. The line ranking for litter size at birth for each age at male-exposure was L+>L+W>LW+, despite the significant line by age interaction. When litter size was adjusted by covariance for body weight at mating, the significant effects of age at male-exposure and line by age interaction were eliminated. All fertile females were remated after they had weaned their first litter to obtain information on litter size in parity two. Line differences in litter size at birth and number born alive were uniform across parities. An age by parity interaction was evident since the decreased fecundity at younger ages of male exposure in the L+ and LW+ litters of parity one was not evident in parity two. Litter feed efficiency during first parity gestation was defined as litter birth weight divided by either cumulative feed intake of the dam from mating to parturition (GEI) or cumulative feed intake from weaning to parturition (GEII). The ranking of lines for GEI and GEH was L+> L+W>LW+, but when feed efficiency was adjusted for littering rate, L+W and LW+ were not significantly different. Testis of male albino rats treated with depot medroxyprogesterone acetate DMPA, at the dose of 1 mg/animal/day for 60 days showed degenerative changes in the late spermatids. The changes were related with the mitochondrial sheath of the midpiece, including the plasma membrane enclosing the mitochondria and the mitochondrial cristae. Except lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase, all the testicular marker enzymes, viz. beta-glucuronidase, hyaluronidase, sorbitol dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase registered a significant decrease. The ultrastructural and biochemical changes are correlated, as the cellular degeneration is responsible for decrease in the activity of the marker enzymes.  相似文献

We have examined the effect of a medroxyprogesterone therapy in HIV-infected patients under appropriate nutrition for anabolism. The experiments were performed on 12 men (mean age 40 y), HIV seropositive but free of any clinically active opportunistic infection for at least one month. The patients underwent a 2-week baseline diet period (1.2 g protein x kg(-1) body weight (BW) x d(-1)) and then a 5-week experimental period with again the baseline diet in conjunction with supplements including Tonexis HP (0.7 g protein x kg(-1) BW) x d(-1)), L-threonine (0.018 g x kg(-1) BW x d(-1)) and L-methionine (0.013 g x kg(-1) BW x d(-1)). Indeed HIV-infected patients showed deficiencies in these amino acids. They were randomly divided into groups I and II under double-blinded condition. Group II was given medroxyprogesterone acetate (0.4 g x d(-1)) during the last 3 weeks whereas group I received a placebo. All the patients significantly increased their body weight (P < 0.05) during the experimental periods. Those under medroxyprogesterone tended to show a higher but not significant weight gain (+3.1 +/- 1.0 kg in group II and +1.9 +/- 0.3 kg in group I). Blood free amino acids were used as rough indicators of amino acid utilization and were analyzed prior and during acute 150 min intravenous infusion of a complete glucose-amino acid mixture. This test was done before and at the end of the experimental periods. Basal essential blood free amino acids were similar in the two groups and did not change during the experimental period. Most essential amino acids increased following glucose-amino acid infusions. The incremental increase was of less magnitude after the experimental period than before when medroxyprogesterone was present (P < 0.05 for valine, leucine, lysine, threonine and methionine). This was not the case in the absence of the hormone. We concluded that medroxyprogesterone might improve the efficacy of an oral protein-rich nutritional support in HIV-infected patients.  相似文献
