A review of national and international publications on paragonimiasis in Ecuador, epidemiological records from the Ministry of Public Health and unpublished research data was conducted to summarise the current status of the parasite/disease. The purpose of the review is to educate physicians, policy-makers and health providers on the status of the disease and to stimulate scientific investigators to conduct further research. Paragonimiasis was first diagnosed in Ecuador 94 years ago and it is endemic to both tropical and subtropical regions in 19 of 24 provinces in the Pacific Coast and Amazon regions. Paragonimus mexicanus is the only known species in the country, with the mollusc Aroapyrgus colombiensis and the crabs Moreirocarcinus emarginatus, Hypolobocera chilensis and Hypolobocera aequatorialis being the primary and secondary intermediate hosts, respectively. Recent studies found P. mexicanus metacercariae in Trichodactylus faxoni crabs of the northern Amazon. Chronic pulmonary paragonimiasis is commonly misdiagnosed and treated as tuberculosis and although studies have demonstrated the efficacy of praziquantel and triclabendazole for the treatment of human infections, neither drug is available in Ecuador. Official data recorded from 1978-2007 indicate an annual incidence of 85.5 cases throughout the 19 provinces, with an estimated 17.2% of the population at risk of infection. There are no current data on the incidence/prevalence of infection, nor is there a national control programme.  相似文献

Although no natural infections with lung flukes were encountered in the hydrobioid snail Aroapyrgus colombiensis from streams in the Condebamba Valley, Peru, laboratory-bred snails were readily susceptible to infection with miracidia of Paragonimus peruvianus. The redia and cercaria are described for the first time for those of neotropical lung flukes. Cercariae inside rediae did not have a stylet and development was apparently completed outside the rediae in snail tissues. The microcercous xiphidiocercaria had 2 groups of gland cells on each side; the outer consisted of 5 cells and the inner of 3 cells, all with ducts opening at the stylet. The excretory bladder was large, often triangular, was thick-walled, and of 1 layer of cuboidal cells. The redia lacked procrusculi and had a short intestine which was slightly longer than the pharynx.  相似文献

Gyrodactylus mexicanus n. sp. and Gyrodactylus lamothei n. sp. are described from the fins and skin of Girardinichthys multiradiatus, an endemic freshwater fish from central Mexico. Gyrodactylus mexicanus is compared to other Gyrodactylus species that parasitize Fundulus spp., the phylogenetically closest group to the Goodeidae from North America. Gyrodactylus mexicanus is distinguished by having large anchors with well-developed superficial roots, enlarged hooks with a proximally disrupted shank (ligament), and a ventral bar with 2 poorly developed anterolateral projections and a small medial process. Gyrodactylus lamothei is distinguished from G. mexicanus and from other species of Gyrodactylus on the North American continent by having anchors with a sclerite on the superficial root and robust hooks with a straight shaft and a recurved point.  相似文献

A comparative ultrastructural study has been made of the pineal organ in specimens of two closely related populations of the characid fish, Astyanaz mexicanus. The specimens of one population are living in the river, under natural light conditions. The specimens of the other population, originally described as Anoptichthys jordani, are living in a completely dark cave. In specimens of both populations the pineal organ consists of a spindle shaped end-vesicle, connected to the diencephalic roof by a slender stalk. The pineal tissue is compact and consists predominantly of glia-like supporting cells and sensory cells resembling the photoreceptor cells of the lateral vertebrate eye. Phagocytotic microglia-like cells can be found in close contact with the outer segments of the sensory cells. Nerve cells are located in the neighbourhood of neuropil formations, in which synaptic contacts are established between sensory cells and nerve cells. From these nerve cells fibers are emerging, forming the pineal tract that runs down the pineal stalk towards the diencephalon. On the basis of the ultrastructure described by other authors it is concluded that the pineal organ in specimens of the river population of Astyanax mexicanus resembles the pineal organ of other fish species. In specimens of the river population, reared under normal light-dark conditions for 3, 9 or 18 months, conspicuous morphological changes have not been detected in the presumably light-sensitive outer segments of the sensory cells or in other parts of the pineal tissue. In specimens of the cave populations, reared under identical conditions, an age-dependent, gradual regression of the regular outer segment organization of the pineal sensory cells takes place. In other parts of the pineal tissue, only small morphological changes can be observed. In specimens of the cave population, reared in constant darkness, the regression of the pineal outer segment organization begins earlier and is obvious. It is postulated that the gradual age-dependent regression of the regular organization of the outer segments in the pineal organ of cave specimens of Astyanax mexicanus is genetically determined and indicates a regressive evolution of the pineal light sensitivity. The expression of the regressive traits is dependent on the environmental light conditions.  相似文献

Five hundred fifty-six samples representing 24 species of small mammals (two species of marsupials and 22 rodents) were collected in Panama between February 2000 and July 2002. The samples were examined for antibodies to hantaviruses by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or immunoblot assays. The serologic results indicated that several rodent species might act as hantaviral reservoirs in Panama: Costa Rican pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys fulvescens costaricensis), four positive of 72 tested (5.6%); Cherrie's cane rat (Zygodontomys brevicauda cherriei), five of 108 (4.6%); Mexican deer mouse (Peromyscus mexicanus), one of 22 (5%); Mexican harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys mexicanus), one of seven (14%); Chiriquí harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys creper), one of two (50%); and Sumichrast's harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys sumichrasti), three of four (75%). Hantavirus infection in Peromyscus mexicanus and the three species of Reithrodontomys was caused by Rio Segundo hantavirus, a species of virus not previously reported from Panama. At least three hantaviruses, therefore, are known to infect populations of wild rodents in the country. However, given the total number of animals tested, the role of these rodent species in the epidemiology and epizootiology of hantavirus infections remains unclear.  相似文献

Two strains isolated from the lichen Cryptothecia rubrocincta collected in Mexico are described as new members of the sterigmatoconidia-producing genus Fellomyces. Based on the identical sequences of the D1/D2 regions of 26S rDNA, as well as the results of the cluster analysis of the AFLP fingerprints, the strains have been shown to be conspecific. The 26S rDNA-based phylogeny has indicated that Fellomyces mexicanus clusters within a clade including species such as four other Fellomyces isolates from lichens: F. chinensis, F. lichenicola, F. sichuanensis and F. thailandicus. F. mexicanus is characterised by the presence of xylose in the cell walls and CoQ10 in the mitochondrial membrane. The type culture is strain HB25=CBS8279.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted throughout an annual cycle to study the role of agonistic behaviour in explaining the relative abundance of the volcano mouse ( Neotomodon alstoni ) in a small mammal community in high-altitude grasslands of central Mexico. Intrasexual contests between N. alstoni and three other sympatric rodents ( Peromyscus melanotis, Microtus mexicanus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis ) were performed. Male and female P. melanotis (100 and 67% of contests, respectively) and M. mexicanus (82 and 100%) were aggressively dominant over N. alstoni , whereas R. megalotis (80 and 100%) were not aggressive. Agonistic behaviour in this species did not explain its greater abundance in the community.  相似文献

A diverse group of animals has adapted to caves and lost their eyes and pigmentation, but little is known about how these animals and their striking phenotypes have evolved. The teleost Astyanax mexicanus consists of an eyed epigean form (surface fish) and at least 29 different populations of eyeless hypogean forms (cavefish). Current alternative hypotheses suggest that adaptation to cave environments may have occurred either once or multiple times during the evolutionary history of this species. If the latter is true, the unique phenotypes of different cave-dwelling populations may result from convergence of form, and different genetic changes and developmental processes may have similar morphological consequences. Here we report an analysis of variation in the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase 2 (ND2) gene among different surface fish and cavefish populations. The results identify a minimum of two genetically distinctive cavefish lineages with similar eyeless phenotypes. The distinction between these divergent forms is supported by differences in the number of rib-bearing thoracic vertebrae in their axial skeletons. The geographic distribution of ND2 haplotypes is consistent with roles for multiple founder events and introgressive hybridization in the evolution of cave-related phenotypes. The existence of multiple genetic lineages makes A. mexicanus an excellent model to study convergence and the genes and developmental pathways involved in the evolution of the eye and pigment degeneration.  相似文献

The feeding habits of four species of mesopelagic fishes from northern Chile are described: Triphoturus mexicanus, Diogenichtys atlanticus, Vinciguerria lucetia and Cyclothone acclinidens. Samples were captured in September 1988 between 18 degrees 25' and 19 degrees 09'S in the South West Pacific. The quantitative and qualitative analyses of the stomach content showed that the species have a zooplanktophagous opportunistic behavior, mainly predating on Crustaceans, especially on Copepods. The evaluation of the trophic spectrum and diversity of T. mexicanus and C. acclinidens suggests that these are nictoepipelagic species, while D. atlanticus and V. lucetia would be typical mesopelagic.  相似文献

Nineteen species of helminths were recovered from 34 of 35 black-necked stilts, Himantopus mexicanus Muller, collected from the Fort Bliss ponds, El Paso County, Texas. New host records are marked with an. The species identified were: Acoleus vaginatus, Davainea himantopodis, Diplophallus polymorphus, Eurycestus avoceti, Hymenolepis himantopodis, Hymenolepis sp. 1, Infula macrophallus, Coacitrema michiganensis, Cyclocoelum lanceolatum, Notocotylus sp., Parastrigea mexicanus, Tanaisia fedtschenkoi, Capillaria sp., C. anatis, C. contorta, C. mergi, Chevreuxia americana, Eustronglydes mergorum, and Splendidofilaria sp. Six species of mallophagan lice and 1 species of nasal mite, Rhinonyssus himantopus, were recovered. Helminths showed little concentration for dominance (0.09), were not very evenly distributed (0.49 +/- 0.08) nor very diverse (0.73 +/- 0.14), and most species were highly aggregated. The helminth community consisted of an unusually large number of core species (10). Three large species of tapeworms exhibited mostly paired infections, were mutually exclusive, and were negatively associated (-1).  相似文献

We estimated phylogenetic relationships among 16 species of harvest mice using sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene. Gene phylogenies constructed using maximum parsimony (MP), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) optimality criteria were largely congruent and arranged taxa into two groups corresponding to the two recognized subgenera (Aporodon and Reithrodontomys). All analyses also recovered R. mexicanus and R. microdon as polyphyletic, although greater resolution was obtained using ML and BI approaches. Within R. mexicanus, three clades were identified with high nodal support (MP and ML bootstrap, Bremer decay and Bayesian posterior probabilities). One represented a subspecies of R. mexicanus from Costa Rica (R. m. cherrii) and a second was distributed in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico. The third R. mexicanus clade consisted of mice from southern Mexico southward to South America. Polyphyly between the two moieties of R. microdon corresponded to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico. Populations of R. microdon microdon to the east of the isthmus (Chiapas, Mexico) grouped with R. tenuirostris, whereas samples of R. m. albilabris to the west in Oaxaca, Mexico, formed a clade with R. bakeri. Within the subgenus Reithrodontomys, all analyses recovered R. montanus and R. raviventris as sister taxa, a finding consistent with earlier studies based on allozymes and cyt b data. There was also strong support (ML and BI criteria) for a clade consisting of ((R. megalotis, R. zacatecae) (R. sumichrasti)). In addition, cytb gene phylogenies (MP, ML, and BI) recovered R. fulvescens and R. hirsutus (ML and BI) as basal taxa within the subgenus Reithrodontomys. Constraint analyses demonstrated that tree topologies treating the two subgenera (Aporodon and Reithrodontomys) as monophyletic (ML criterion) was significantly better (p>0.036) and supported polyphyly of R. mexicanus (both ML and MP criteria - p>0.013) and R. microdon (MP criterion only for certain topologies; p>0.02). Although several species-level taxa were identified based on multiple, independent data sets, we recommended a conservative approach which will involve thorough analyses of museum specimens including material from type localities together with additional sampling and data from multiple, nuclear gene markers.  相似文献

The development of the eye of the characin Astyanax mexicanus, of its blind derivative Anoptichthys jordani, and crossbreds of both forms was studied at different ontogenetic stages by means of scanning- and transmission-electron microscopy. Astyanax exhibits a form of eye development resembling that in other characid species. A severe reduction of the eye could be observed in Anoptichthys starting with the second day of ontogeny. This degenerational process is characterized by the following features: 1) An overgrowth of epidermal tissue that gradually covers the surface of the eyeball; 2) the sinking of the eyeball below the surface of the integument; 3) the formation of epidermal channels from the body surface to the disappearing surface of the eyeball; 4) a severe degeneration of the retinal sensory cells; and 5) a small number of pigment granules in the pigment epithelial cells. The progeny of crosses between Astyanax and Anoptichthys show varying degrees of these degenerational signs. Taste buds and the lateral line organ display identical features in all crosses analyzed with the scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

The Aleiodes melanopterus (Erichson, 1848) species-group includes 21 species, of which seven are known from the Neotropical region: Aleiodes flavistigma Shaw, 1993, Aleiodes lucidus (Szépligeti, 1906), Aleiodes melanopterus, Aleiodes mexicanus Cresson, 1869, Aleiodes politiceps (Gahan, 1917), and the new species Aleiodes shaworumsp. n. and Aleiodes vassunungasp. n. Distribution ranges of Aleiodes melanopterus, Aleoides flavistigma and Aleiodes lucidus are extended and the female of Aleiodes lucidus is described. This paper reports new distribution records of large branchiopods for Mexico following a three year survey of the Baja California peninsula. The occurance of the anostracans Thamnocephalus mexicanus (Linder, 1941) and T. platyurus (Packard, 1877), the notostracan Lepidurus lemmoni (Holmes, 1894), and the spinicaudatans Eulimnadia cylindrova (Belk, 1989) and E. texana (Packard,1871), all represent the first records for the peninsula. An undescribed species of the anostracan genus Streptocephalus is recorded from the state of Baja California (Norte). The occurrence of the notostracan genus Triops and four other anostracan species on the peninsula is also confirmed. The conchostracan Cyclestheria hislopi (Baird, 1859) is recorded from the state of Quintana Roo. The collections of Lepidurus and Cyclestheria are the first records for México. These records increase the number of species of large branchiopods reported fromMéxico to 36: 20 Anostraca, 3 Notostraca, 11 Spinicaudata, and 2Laevicaudata. The reproductive physiology of Corynorhinus mexicanus includes a testes growth-involution cycle. Testis recrudescence begins in May-June, peaks in August and then undergoes a profound involution being totally regressed in November. Adult, male individuals were captured monthly during one year and ROS scavenging enzyme activities were measured in testes and expressed per total wet-weight and per mg protein. SOD total activity is very low from October to February; increases sharply one full month before testes recrudescence starts, and in August, when testis activity was at its peak, SOD is 3-4 times lower than in July. Catalase total activity is bimodal. The main peak of activity occurs during testicular recrudescence with an additional smaller peak, two months before the onset of recrudescence. Glutathione peroxidase total activity parallels almost exactly the testis growth cycle, increases in July, reaches a peak in August and decreases through September to almost disappear in October. SOD specific activity shows a pre-testicular increase of activity, maintains its activity from March to July and then descends drastically to almost nil in August, maintaining these low values until February. Catalase specific activity is particularly important during the period of testicular regression. GPX specific activity is low from March to July, months of testicular recrudescence; whereas its activity increases in August and peaks in November, when testes regression occurs. Our data show that ROS-scavenging enzymes may play a very important role during testes involution-recrudescence in C. mexicanus, and we believe their participation could be equally important in all seasonally breeding mammals.  相似文献

Ultrastructural changes of the pineal organ were investigated in the blind cave fish, Astyanax mexicanus, kept under continous artificial light (5000 lux), in continuous darkness, and under natural light conditions. The pineal end-vesicle of the fish kept under natural photoperiod consisted of photoreceptor cells and supporting cells mixed with a few ganglion cells. The photoreceptor cells possessed well-developed outer segments with regularly arranged lamellar membranes. The supporting cells contained a number of lipid droplets and large globular cisternae filled with fine granules. In the fish kept under continuous light or in darkness, the pineal end-vesicle displayed a dilated lumen, and the outer segments of the receptors showed signs of degeneration. Furthermore, alterations of cell organelles were observed in the photoreceptor and supporting cells.  相似文献
