We compared in human skeletal muscle the effect of absolute vs. relative exercise intensity on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling and substrate metabolism under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Eight untrained males cycled for 30 min under hypoxic conditions (11.5% O(2), 111 +/- 12 W, 72 +/- 3% hypoxia Vo(2 peak); 72% Hypoxia) or under normoxic conditions (20.9% O(2)) matched to the same absolute (111 +/- 12 W, 51 +/- 1% normoxia Vo(2 peak); 51% Normoxia) or relative (to Vo(2 peak)) intensity (171 +/- 18 W, 73 +/- 1% normoxia Vo(2 peak); 73% Normoxia). Increases (P < 0.05) in AMPK activity, AMPKalpha Thr(172) phosphorylation, ACCbeta Ser(221) phosphorylation, free AMP content, and glucose clearance were more influenced by the absolute than by the relative exercise intensity, being greatest in 73% Normoxia with no difference between 51% Normoxia and 72% Hypoxia. In contrast to this, increases in muscle glycogen use, muscle lactate content, and plasma catecholamine concentration were more influenced by the relative than by the absolute exercise intensity, being similar in 72% Hypoxia and 73% Normoxia, with both trials higher than in 51% Normoxia. In conclusion, increases in muscle AMPK signaling, free AMP content, and glucose disposal during exercise are largely determined by the absolute exercise intensity, whereas increases in plasma catecholamine levels, muscle glycogen use, and muscle lactate levels are more closely associated with the relative exercise intensity.  相似文献

Gastric emptying is increased during running (50%-70% maximal aerobic uptake, VO2max) as compared to rest. Whether this increase varies as a function of mode (i.e. walking vs running) and intensity of treadmill exercise is unknown. To examine the gastric emptying characteristics of water during treadmill exercise performed over a wide range of intensities relative to resting conditions, 10 men ingested 400 ml of water prior to each of six 15 min exercise bouts or 15 min of seated rest. Three bouts of walking exercise (1.57 m.s-1) were performed at increasing grades eliciting approximately 28%, 41% or 56% of VO2max. On a separate day, three bouts of running (2.68 ms-1) exercise were performed at grades eliciting approximately 57%, 65% or 75% of VO2max. Gastric emptying was increased during treadmill exercise at all intensities excluding 75% VO2max as compared to rest. Gastric emptying was similar for all intensities during walking and at 57% and 65% VO2max during running. However, running at 74% VO2max decreased the volume of original drink emptied as compared to all lower exercise intensities. Stomach secretions were markedly less during running as compared to walking and rest. These data demonstrate that gastric emptying is similarly increased during both moderate intensity (approximately 28%-65% VO2max) walking or running exercise as compared to resting conditions. However, gastric emptying decreases during high intensity exercise. Increases in gastric emptying during moderate intensity treadmill exercise may be related to increases in intragastric pressure brought about by contractile activity of the abdominal muscles.  相似文献

The effect of acute hypoxia on blood concentration of ammonia ([NH3]b) and lactate (la-]b) was studied during incremental exercise(IE), and two-step constant workload exercises (CE). Fourteen endurance-trained subjects performed incremental exercise on a cycle ergometer under normoxic (21% O2) and hypoxic (10.4% O2) conditions. Eight endurance-trained subjects performed two-step constant workload exercise at sea level and at a simulated altitude of 5000 m (hypobaric chamber, P(B)=405 Torr; P(O2)=85 Torr) in random order. In normoxia, the first step lasted 25 minutes at an intensity of 85 % of the individual ventilatory anaerobic threshold (AT(vent), ind) at sea level. This reduced workload was followed by a second step of 5 minutes at 115% of their AT(vent), ind. This test was repeated into a hypobaric chamber, at a simulated altitude of 5,000 m. The first step in hypoxia was at an intensity of 65 % of AT(vent), ind., whereas workload for the second step at simulated altitude was the same as that of the first workload in normoxia (85 % of AT(vent), ind). During IE, [NH3]b and [la-]b were significantly higher in hypoxia than in normoxia. Increases in these metabolites were highly correlated in each condition. The onset of [NH3]b and [la-]b accumulation occurred at different exercise intensity in normoxia (181W for lactate and 222W for ammonia) and hypoxia (100W for lactate and 140W for ammonia). In both conditions, during CE, [NH3]b showed a significant increase during each of the two steps, whereas [la-]b increased to a steady-state in the initial step, followed by a sharp increase above 4 mM x L(-1) during the second. Although exercise intensity was much lower in hypoxia than in normoxia, [NH3]b was always higher at simulated altitude. Thus, for the same workload, [NH3]b in hypoxia was significantly higher (p<0.05) than in normoxia. Our data suggest that there is a close relationship between [NH3]b and [la-]b in normoxia and hypoxia during graded intensity exercises. The accumulation of ammonia in blood is independent of that of lactate during constant intense exercise. Hypoxia increases the concentration of ammonia in blood during exercise.  相似文献

To study selected cardiovascular, thermoregulatory, and hormonal responses to the consumption of glycerol solutions during exercise, nine subjects cycled for 90 min at 50% peak O2 uptake in a 30 degree C, 45% relative humidity environment. Beverages tested included a 10% glycerol solution (G), a 6% carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage (CE), the 6% carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage plus 4% glycerol (CEG), and a water placebo (WP) ingested at regular intervals during the first 60 min of exercise. The beverages were administered in counterbalanced order with subjects serving as their own controls. Ingestion of the glycerol solutions resulted in an increase in plasma osmolality and attenuation of the decrease in plasma volume associated with the WP treatment (P less than 0.05). Plasma renin activity was highest with WP (P less than 0.05), and G was associated with increased antidiuretic hormone levels (P less than 0.05). Ratings of perceived thirst were lowest for CEG and G, and the frequency of gastrointestinal distress was greatest for G (P less than 0.05). However, no differences among beverage treatments were observed for heart rate, esophageal temperature, sweat rate, ratings of perceived exertion, or changes in cortisol and aldosterone levels. These data indicate that there are no substantial metabolic, hormonal, cardiovascular, or thermoregulatory advantages to the consumption of solutions containing 4 or 10% glycerol during exercise.  相似文献

The present study sought to evaluate the inconsistencies previously observed regarding the predominance of continuous or interval training for improving fitness. The experimental design initially equated and subsequently maintained the same relative exercise intensity by both groups throughout the program. Twelve subjects were equally divided into continuous (CT, exercise at 50% maximal work) or interval (IT, 30 s work, 30 s rest at 100% maximal work) training groups that cycled 30 min day-1, 3 days.week-1, for 8 weeks. Following training, aerobic power (VO2max), exercising work rates, and peak power output were all higher (9-16%) after IT than after CT (5-7%). Vastus lateralis muscle citrate synthase activity increased 25% after CT but not after IT. A consistent increase in adenylate kinase activity (25%) was observed only after IT. During continuous cycling testing the CT group had reduced blood lactate (lab) levels and respiratory quotient at both the same absolute and relative (70% VO2max) work rates after training, while the IT group displayed similar changes only at the same absolute work rates. By contrast, both groups responded similarly during intermittent cycling testing with lower lab concentrations seen only at absolute work rates. These results show that, of the two types of training programs currently employed, IT produces higher increases in VO2max and in maximal exercise capacity. Nevertheless, CT is more effective at increasing muscle oxidative capacity and delaying the accumulation of lab during continuous exercise.  相似文献

O2 concentration, PO2, PCO2, pH, osmolarity, lactate (LA), and hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations in deep forearm venous blood were repeatedly measured during submaximal exercise of forearm muscles. Concentrations of arterial blood gases were determined at rest and during exercise. Experiments were conducted under normoxia and hypobaric hypoxia (PB = 465 Torr). In arterial blood, data obtained during exercise were the same as those obtained during rest under either normoxia or hypoxia. In venous muscular blood, PO2 and O2 concentration were lower at rest and during exercise in hypoxia. The muscular arteriovenous O2 difference during exercise in hypoxia was increased by no more than 10% compared with normoxia, which implied that muscular blood flow during exercise also increased by the same percentage, if we assume that exercise O2 consumption was not affected by hypoxia. Despite increased [LA], the magnitude of changes in PCO2 and pH in hypoxia were smaller than in normoxia during exercise and recovery; this finding is probably due to the increased blood buffer value induced by the greater amount of reduced Hb in hypoxia. Hence all the changes occurring in hypoxia showed that local metabolism was less affected than we expected from the decrease in arterial PO2. The rise in [Hb] that occurred during exercise was lower in hypoxia. Possible underlying mechanisms of the [Hb] rise during exercise are discussed.  相似文献

The objective of these experiments was to determine whether living and training in moderate hypoxia (MHx) confers an advantage on maximal normoxic exercise capacity compared with living and training in normoxia. Rats were acclimatized to and trained in MHx [inspired PO2 (PI(O2)) = 110 Torr] for 10 wk (HTH). Rats living in normoxia trained under normoxic conditions (NTN) at the same absolute work rate: 30 m/min on a 10 degrees incline, 1 h/day, 5 days/wk. At the end of training, rats exercised maximally in normoxia. Training increased maximal O2 consumption (VO2 max) in NTN and HTH above normoxic (NS) and hypoxic (HS) sedentary controls. However, VO2 max and O2 transport variables were not significantly different between NTN and HTH: VO2 max 86.6 +/- 1.5 vs. 86.8 +/- 1.1 ml x min(-1) x kg(-1); maximal cardiac output 456 +/- 7 vs. 443 +/- 12 ml x min(-1) x kg(-1); tissue blood O2 delivery (cardiac output x arterial O2 content) 95 +/- 2 vs. 96 +/- 2 ml x min(-1) x kg(-1); and O2 extraction ratio (arteriovenous O2 content difference/arterial O2 content) 0.91 +/- 0.01 vs. 0.90 +/- 0.01. Mean pulmonary arterial pressure (Ppa, mmHg) was significantly higher in HS vs. NS (P < 0.05) at rest (24.5 +/- 0.8 vs. 18.1 +/- 0.8) and during maximal exercise (32.0 +/- 0.9 vs. 23.8 +/- 0.6). Training in MHx significantly attenuated the degree of pulmonary hypertension, with Ppa being significantly lower at rest (19.3 +/- 0.8) and during maximal exercise (29.2 +/- 0.5) in HTH vs. HS. These data indicate that, despite maintaining equal absolute training intensity levels, acclimatization to and training in MHx does not confer significant advantages over normoxic training. On the other hand, the pulmonary hypertension associated with acclimatization to hypoxia is reduced with hypoxic exercise training.  相似文献

The time necessary for the initial appearance of ingested water as sweat during exercise in the heat remains unknown. Based on the current literature, we estimated fluid transition through the body, from ingestion to appearance as sweat, to have a minimum time duration of approximately three minutes. The purpose of this study was to test this prediction and identify the time necessary for the initial enrichment of deuterium oxide (D2O) in sweat following ingestion during exercise in the heat. Eight participants performed moderate intensity (40% of maximal oxygen uptake) treadmill exercise in an environmental chamber (40 °C, 40% rH) to induce active sweating. After fifteen minutes, while continuing to walk, participants consumed D2O (0.15 ml kg−1) in a final volume of 50 ml water. Scapular sweat samples were collected one minute prior to and ten minutes post-ingestion. Samples were analyzed for sweat D2O concentration using isotope ratio mass spectrometry and compared to baseline. Mean±SD ∆ sweat D2O concentration at minutes one and two post-ingestion were not significantly higher than baseline (0 min). Minutes three (9±3 ppm) through ten (23±11 ppm) post-ingestion had ∆ sweat D2O concentrations significantly (P<0.05) higher than baseline. Such results suggest that ingested water rapidly transports across the mucosal membrane of the alimentary canal into the vasculature space, enters the extravascular fluid, and is actively secreted by the eccrine sweat glands onto the surface of the skin for potential evaporation in as little as three minutes during exercise in the heat.  相似文献

Eight male subjects (24 +/- 1 years old) performed graded ergocycle exercises in normoxic (N) and acute hypoxic (H) conditions (14.5% O2). VO2max decreased from 55.5 +/- 1.3 to 45.8 +/- 1.4 ml . kg-1 . min-1 in H condition. Plasma glucose and free fatty acid concentrations remained unchanged throughout exercise in both conditions. Increase in blood lactate concentration was associated with relative workload in both conditions. At VO2max lactate concentrations were similar in the two conditions, plasma insulin, glucagon, and LH concentrations did not significantly change in either. Plasma delta 4-androstenedione and testosterone increased in a similar manner in both conditions. Finally plasma norepinephrine concentration reached at VO2max was significantly lower in hypoxia. These results suggest that acute moderate hypoxia does not affect metabolic and hormonal responses to short exercise performed at similar relative workloads, i.e. when the reduction of VO2max due to hypoxia is taken into consideration. The lower catecholamine response to maximal exercise under acute hypoxia might suggest that the sympathetic response could be related to relative as well as absolute workloads.  相似文献

Treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEpo) induces a rise in blood oxygen-carrying capacity (CaO(2)) that unequivocally enhances maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2)max) during exercise in normoxia, but not when exercise is carried out in severe acute hypoxia. This implies that there should be a threshold altitude at which VO(2)max is less dependent on CaO(2). To ascertain which are the mechanisms explaining the interactions between hypoxia, CaO(2) and VO(2)max we measured systemic and leg O(2) transport and utilization during incremental exercise to exhaustion in normoxia and with different degrees of acute hypoxia in eight rhEpo-treated subjects. Following prolonged rhEpo treatment, the gain in systemic VO(2)max observed in normoxia (6-7%) persisted during mild hypoxia (8% at inspired O(2) fraction (F(I)O(2)) of 0.173) and was even larger during moderate hypoxia (14-17% at F(I)O(2) = 0.153-0.134). When hypoxia was further augmented to F(I)O(2) = 0.115, there was no rhEpo-induced enhancement of systemic VO(2)max or peak leg VO(2). The mechanism highlighted by our data is that besides its strong influence on CaO(2), rhEpo was found to enhance leg VO(2)max in normoxia through a preferential redistribution of cardiac output toward the exercising legs, whereas this advantageous effect disappeared during severe hypoxia, leaving augmented CaO(2) alone insufficient for improving peak leg O(2) delivery and VO(2). Finally, that VO(2)max was largely dependent on CaO(2) during moderate hypoxia but became abruptly CaO(2)-independent by slightly increasing the severity of hypoxia could be an indirect evidence of the appearance of central fatigue.  相似文献

We examined whether less convective heat loss during exercise at high altitude than at sea level was partially caused by reduced cutaneous vasodilation due to enhanced plasma water loss into contracting muscles and whether it was caused by hypoxia rather than by hypobaria. Seven young men performed cycling exercise for 40 min at 50% peak aerobic power in normoxia at (710 mmHg) 610 m, determined before the experiments, in three trials: 1) normobaric normoxia at 610 m (CNT), 2) hypobaric hypoxia [low pressure and low oxygen (LPLO)] at 3,200 m (510 mmHg), 3) normobaric hypoxia [normal pressure and low oxygen (NPLO)] at 610 m, in an artificial climate chamber where atmospheric temperature and relative humidity were maintained at 30°C and 50%, respectively. Subjects in CNT and LPLO breathed room air, whereas those in NPLO breathed a mixed gas of 14% O? balanced N?, equivalent to the gas composition in LPLO. We measured change in PV (ΔPV), oxygen consumption rate (Vo?), mean arterial blood pressure (MBP), esophageal temperature (T(es)), mean skin temperature (T(sk)), forearm skin blood flow (FBF), and sweat rate (SR) during exercise. Although Vo?, MBP, T(sk), and SR responses during exercise were similar between trials (P > 0.05), the sensitivity of forearm vascular conductance (FBF/MBP) in response to increased T(es) was lower in LPLO and NPLO than in CNT (P < 0.05), whereas that of SR was not, resulting in a greater increase in T(es) from minute 5 to 40 of exercise in LPLO and NPLO than in CNT (P = 0.026 and P = 0.011, respectively). ΔPV during exercise was twofold greater in LPLO and NPLO than in CNT. These variables were not significantly different between LPLO and NPLO. Thus reduced convective heat loss during exercise at 3,200 m was partially caused by reduced cutaneous vasodilation due to enhanced PV loss. Moreover, this may be caused by hypoxia rather than by hypobaria.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to investigate whether part of the ammonia formed during muscular exercise was excreted with the sweat. Male medical students volunteered for the experiment. They exercised 30 min on a bicycle ergometer at 80 and 40% of the predetermined maximal O2 uptake (VO2max). Exercise at 80% VO2max was performed twice, at room temperature (20 degrees C) and in a cold room (0 degrees C), whereas exercise at 40% was performed only at room temperature (20 degrees C). Blood was collected from the antecubital vein immediately before and after exercise. Sweat was collected from the hypogastric region by use of gauze pads. It was shown that the plasma ammonia level was elevated after exercise at 80% VO2max and remained stable after exercise at 40% VO2max. The volume of sweat produced during exercise at 80% VO2max at 20 degrees C was 428 +/- 138 ml and at 0 degrees C 245 +/- 86 ml and during exercise at 40% VO2max was 183 +/- 69 ml. The ammonia concentration in the sweat after exercise at 80% VO2max at 20 degrees C was 7,140 mumol/l and at 0 degrees C 11,816 mumol/l. After exercise at 40% VO2max, it was 2,076 mumol/l. The total ammonia lost through the sweat during exercise at 80% VO2max was similar at both temperatures, despite the difference in the sweat volume (at 20 degrees C, 3,360 +/- 2,080 mumol; at 0 degrees C, 3,310 +/- 1,250 mumol). During exercise at 40% VO2max, it was 350 +/- 230 mumol. These results show that part of ammonia formed during exercise is lost with sweat. The amount lost increases with increased work rate and the plasma ammonia concentration.  相似文献

Brain serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) has been suggested to be involved in central fatigue during prolonged exercise. Changes in the ratio of plasma free tryptophan (free Trp) to branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are associated with altered brain 5-HT synthesis. The purposes of this study were to describe systematically the effects of prolonged exercise on changes in plasma free Trp and BCAA and to examine the effects of carbohydrate (CHO) feedings on these same variables. Eight well-trained men [VO2max = 57.8 (SE 4.1) ml kg-1 min-1] cycled for up to 255 min at a power output corresponding to VO2 at lactate threshold (approximately 68% VO2max) on three occasions separated by at least 1 week. Subjects drank 5 ml kg-1 body wt-1 of either a water placebo, or a liquid beverage containing a moderate (6% CHO) or high (12% CHO) concentration of carbohydrate beginning at min 14 of exercise and every 30 min thereafter. Exercise time to fatigue was shorter in subjects receiving placebo [190 (SE 4) min] as compared to 6% CHO [235 (SE 10) min] and 12% CHO [234 (SE 9) min] (P < 0.05). Glucose and insulin decreased in the placebo group, and free Trp, free-Trp/BCAA, and free fatty acids increased approximately five- to sevenfold (P < 0.05). These changes were attenuated in a dose-related manner by the carbohydrate drinks.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study was designed to examine aspects of digestive function that may limit assimilation of water and oxidation of orally ingested carbohydrate (CHO) during exercise. Eight males completed a crossover study in which each cycled on four occasions for 80 min at 70% maximal O2 consumption. Beverage was consumed at 0, 20, 40, and 60 min. Beverages were water, 4.5% glucose (4.5G), 17% glucose (17G), and 17% maltodextrin (17MD). CHO beverages contained 20 meq/l NaCl and were 13C enriched to measure exogenous CHO oxidation. Gastric (beverage) volume was measured at 80 min. Water uptake was estimated by including 2H2O in the beverage and measuring 2H accumulation in blood. Jejunal perfusion tests were conducted at rest with the same subjects and beverages. In 60 min, 1,294 +/- 31 (SE) ml were ingested; at 80 min, volumes emptied with H2O (1,257 +/- 32 ml) and 4.5G (1,223 +/- 32 ml) were greater than with 17G (781 +/- 56 ml) and 17MD (864 +/- 71 ml; P less than 0.05). Total CHO oxidized was similar with all beverages, but there was a greater increase in exogenous CHO oxidation over time with 17G and 17MD than with 4.5G; 54, 19, and 18% of the CHO ingested with 4.5G, 17G, and 17MD, respectively, was oxidized. This represents 57, 32, and 27%, respectively, of the CHO emptied from the stomach. 2H accumulation in the blood was more rapid with H2O and 4.5G than with 17G or 17MD. Net jejunal water absorption was greater from 4.5G than from water. Net water absorption was also observed from 17MD, whereas net secretion was observed with 17G.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Intravenous (IV) rehydration is common in athletics, but its thermoregulatory benefits and ergogenicity have not been elucidated. Availability of orally ingested fluid is dependent on gastric emptying and intestinal absorption rate. Deuterium oxide (D2O) has been used to demonstrate that fluid ingested during exercise appears in sweat within 10 minutes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of concurrent IV rehydration on D2O appearance in sweat samples after per ora rehydration with D2O labeled fluid. We hypothesized that the combination method would not be superior to the oral method. Ten fit men (age 23 ± 4, VO2max 59.49 ± 4.09 L·min(-1)) underwent 20 hours of fluid restriction resulting in 1.95 ± 0.25% body weight loss before beginning treadmill exercise and cycling. Exercise was performed in an environmental chamber (35.6 ± 0.2° C, 35.0 ± 1.8% relative humidity) for 2 hours at 55% VO2max, and the participants exhibited a mean body weight deficit of 4.50 ± 0.04%. Thermoregulatory measures were recorded while subjects were rehydrated with oral (OR) or oral combined with intravenous (IVO) fluid traced with D2O. After 30 minutes of rehydration and 30 minutes of seated recovery, the subjects began treadmill exercise at 55-60% VO2max. Forehead sweat samples were collected 0, 5, 10, 20, and 75 minutes from the start of rehydration. The samples were analyzed for D2O via isotope ratio mass spectrometry. D2O did not appear in the sweat within 20 minutes of rehydration; however, it did appear during the subsequent exercise bout. There was no significant difference between rehydration modes. Plasma volume increases and decreased volume of orally ingested fluid did not significantly alter transit time from ingestion to appearance in excreted sweat. The IVO method does not appear to be superior to the traditional OR method of rehydration.  相似文献

Nineteen healthy male subjects, differing in training status and Vo2max (52 +/- 1 ml.min-1.kg-1, mean +/- SEM; 43-64 ml.min-1.kg-1, range), exercised for 1 h at an absolute workload of 192 +/- 8 W (140-265 W); this was equivalent to 70 +/- 1% Vo2max (66-74%). Each exercise test was performed on an electrically braked cycle ergometer at a constant ambient temperature (22.5 +/- 0.0 degrees C) and relative humidity (85 +/- 0%). Nude body weight was recorded prior to and after each exercise test. Absolute sweat loss (body weight loss corrected for respiratory weight loss) during each test was 910 +/- 82 g (426-1665 g); this was equivalent to 1.3 +/- 0.1% (0.7-2.2%) of pre-exercise body weight (relative sweat loss). Weighted mean skin temperature and rectal temperature increased after 5 min of exercise from 30.5 +/- 0.3 degrees C and 37.2 +/- 0.1 degrees C respectively to 32.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C and 38.8 +/- 0.1 degrees C respectively, recorded immediately prior to the end of exercise. Bivariate linear regression and Pearson's correlation demonstrated absolute sweat loss was related to Vo2max (r = 0.72, p less than 0.001), absolute exercise workload (r = 0.66, p less than 0.01), body surface area (r = 0.62, p less than 0.01), weight (r = 0.60, p less than 0.01) and height (r = 0.53, p less than 0.05). Relative sweat loss was related to VO2max (r = 0.77, P less than 0.001) and absolute exercise workload (R = 0.59, P less than 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

We determined changes in rat plantaris, diaphragm, and intercostal muscle metabolites following exercise of various intensities and durations, in normoxia and hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.12). Marked alveolar hyperventilation occurred during all exercise conditions, suggesting that respiratory muscle motor activity was high. [ATP] was maintained at rest levels in all muscles during all normoxic and hypoxic exercise bouts, but at the expense of creatine phosphate (CP) in plantaris muscle and diaphragm muscle following brief exercise at maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) in normoxia. In normoxic exercise plantaris [glycogen] fell as exercise exceeded 60% VO2max, and was reduced to less than 50% control during exhaustive endurance exercise (68% VO2max for 54 min and 84% for 38 min). Respiratory muscle [glycogen] was unchanged at VO2max as well as during either type of endurance exercise. Glucose 6-phosphate (G6P) rose consistently during heavy exercise in diaphragm but not in plantaris. With all types of exercise greater than 84% VO2max, lactate concentration ([LA]) in all three muscles rose to the same extent as arterial [LA], except at VO2max, where respiratory muscle [LA] rose to less than half that in arterial blood or plantaris. Exhaustive exercise in hypoxia caused marked hyperventilation and reduced arterial O2 content; glycogen fell in plantaris (20% of control) and in diaphragm (58%) and intercostals (44%). We conclude that respiratory muscle glycogen stores are spared during exhaustive exercise in the face of substantial glycogen utilization in plantaris, even under conditions of extreme hyperventilation and reduced O2 transport. This sparing effect is due primarily to G6P inhibition of glycogen phosphorylase in diaphragm muscle. The presence of elevated [LA] in the absence of glycogen utilization suggests that increased lactate uptake, rather than lactate production, occurred in the respiratory muscles during exhaustive exercise.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical training on the responses of serum adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol concentration during low-intensity prolonged exercise. Five subjects who had fasted for 12 h cycled at the same absolute intensity that elicited 50% of pre-training maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), either until exhaustion or for up to 3 h, before and after 7 weeks of vigorous physical training [mean daily energy consumption during training exercise, 531 kcal (2230 kJ)]. In the pretraining test, serum ACTH and cortisol concentrations did not increase during the early part of the exercise. Increases in concentrations of both hormones occurred in all subjects when blood glucose concentration decreased during the later phase of the exercise. The mean values and SEM of serum ACTH and cortisol concentrations at the end of the exercise were 356 ng.l-1, SEM 79 and 438 micrograms.l-1, SEM 36, respectively. After the physical training, VO2max of the subjects improved significantly from the mean value of 50.2 ml.kg-1.min-1, SEM 2.5 to 57.3 ml.kg-1.min-1, SEM 2.0 (P less than 0.05). In the post-training test, exercise time to exhaustion was prolonged in three subjects. Comparing the pre- and post training values observed after the same length of time that the subjects had exercised in the pre-training test, the post-training values of serum ACTH (44 ng.l-1, SEM 3) and cortisol (167 micrograms.l-1, SEM 30) concentration were less than the pre-training value (P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of endurance-type exercise training on alterations of the ammonia content of blood in exercising humans. Seven females and four males trained 6 days/wk for 7 wk alternating days of continuous cycling (40 min) and interval running (five 5-min bouts). The NH3 content of blood was determined before and during cycle ergometer (CE) exercise (4 min) at power outputs (PO) of 119, 172, and 241 W pretraining and of 163, 230, and 271 W posttraining. These PO for each occasion represent relative work loads of approximately 65, 90, and 115% of peak CE maximum O2 uptake (PCE VO2), respectively. Training increased (P less than 0.05) PCE VO2 approximately 32% (2.72 +/- 0.25 to 3.56 +/- 0.29 l/min or 38.5 +/- 1.9 to 51.2 +/- 2.3 ml X kg-1 X min-1). Both pre- and posttraining the NH3 content of blood increased (P less than 0.05) with increasing intensity of exercise. Training did not influence the measure of these responses during exercise at the same relative intensity. During exercise at the same absolute PO, approximately 168 or 235 W, however, increases in blood NH3 were less (P less than 0.05) after training. The results indicate that the magnitude of increase in blood NH3 during exercise is determined by the energy requirement of the absolute work load, relative to an individual's aerobic power.  相似文献
