Reputation building plays an important role in the evolution of reciprocal altruism when the same individuals do not interact repeatedly because, by referring to reputation, a reciprocator can know which partners are cooperative and can reciprocate with a cooperator. This reciprocity based on reputation is called indirect reciprocity. Previous studies of indirect reciprocity have focused only on two-person games in which only two individuals participate in a single interaction, and have claimed that indirectly reciprocal cooperation cannot be established under image scoring reputation criterion where the reputation of an individual who has cooperated (defected) becomes good (bad). In this study, we specifically examine three-person games, and reveal that indirectly reciprocal cooperation can be formed and maintained stably, even under image scoring, by a nucleus shield mechanism. In the nucleus shield, reciprocators are a shield that keeps out unconditional defectors, whereas unconditional cooperators are the backbone of cooperation that retains a good reputation among the population.  相似文献

Many diving insects collect a bubble of air from the surface to supply their oxygen requirements while submerged. It has been theorised that these air bubbles may also act as compressible gas gills, as the low oxygen partial pressure (PO2) within the bubble caused by the insect's respiration creates a gradient capable of driving the diffusion of oxygen from the water into the bubble. Under these conditions nitrogen diffuses in the opposite direction, resulting in a situation where the volume of the bubble is continually shrinking while oxygen is obtained. This study measures changes in volume and PO2 within the gas gills held by a tethered water bug, Agraptocorixa eurynome. Both gill volume and PO2 drop rapidly at the beginning of a dive, but eventually the PO2 reaches an apparently stable level while volume continually declines at a slower rate. Active ventilation of the gill is crucial to maintaining oxygen uptake. These measurements are used to calculate oxygen flux into the gas gill and the oxygen consumption rate of the bug. The effectiveness of a gas gill as a respiratory organ is also demonstrated by determining the critical PO2 of the water bug and comparing this with measured gas gill PO2 and calculated .  相似文献

The aquation of the title complex cation in aqueous perchloric acid proceeded via two steps, both postulated to be the proton attack on the oxygen atom which binds the acetate ligand to the metal centre, followed by Fe-O bond cleavage. This was followed by rapid decomposition to produce aqueous iron(III) and acetate ions. The first-order rate constants for the first and second steps at 25 °C are: k1 = (4.16 ± 0.58) × 10−2 s−1 and k2 = (2.09 ± 0.42) × 10−3 s−1, respectively, and their corresponding activation parameters are . The spontaneous hydrolysis rate constants for the first and second steps were also determined at 25 °C and ionic strength of 1 mol dm−3 and they are k0 = (3.10 ± 0.82) × 10−3 s−1 and , respectively. A series of novel copper(II) complexes, L2Cu with newly synthesized 3,5--salicylaldimine (or 5--salicylaldimine) ligands derived from 2,4-di-tert-butyl phenol (or 4-tert-butyl phenol) and alkyl (aryl) amines have been prepared and their spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis, ESI-MS), X-ray, magnetic and redox properties have been investigated. The X-ray crystallography analysis shows that all complexes are monomeric and their copper(II) centers are surrounded by phenolate oxygens and imine nitrogen atoms. Therefore, the coordination sphere around the copper atoms is N2O2 as seen in galactose oxidase active site. In addition, the geometric configurations of all complexes are square planar or slightly distorted square planar. The crystal system for all complexes is monoclinic, except for which is orthorhombic. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility of complexes confirms the mononuclear structure of complexes. Oxidation of the Cu(II) complexes yielded the corresponding Cu(II)-phenoxyl radical species during the cyclic voltammetry experiments.  相似文献

The membrane bound cytochrome b558 composed of large gp91-phox and small p22-phox subunits, and cytosolic proteins p40-, p47- and p67-phox are important components of superoxide ()-generating system in phagocytes and B lymphocytes. A lack of this system in phagocytes is known to cause serious life-threatening infections. Here, we describe that curcumin, a polyphenol responsible for the yellow color of curry spice turmeric, dramatically activates the -generating system during retinoic acid (RA)-induced differentiation of human monoblastic leukemia U937 cells to macrophage-like cells. When U937 cells were cultured in the presence of RA and curcumin, the -generating activity increased more than 4-fold compared with that in the absence of the latter. Semiquantitative RT-PCR showed that co-treatment with RA and curcumin slightly enhanced gene expressions of the five components compared with those of the RA-treatment only. On the other hand, immunoblot analysis revealed that co-treatment with RA and curcumin caused remarkable accumulation of protein levels of p47-phox (to 7-fold) and p67-phox (to 4-fold) compared with those of the RA-treatment alone. These results suggested that curcumin dramatically enhances RA-induced -generating activity via accumulation of cytosolic p47-phox and p67-phox proteins in U937 cells. Therefore, it should have the potential as an effective modifier in therapy of leukemia and/or as an immunopotentiator.  相似文献

Mitochondria consume nitric oxide (NO) mainly through reaction with superoxide anion (). Here, we analyzed the sources for NO degradation by isolated rat liver mitochondria. Electron leakage from complex III and reverse electron transport to complex I accounted for -dependent NO degradation by mitochondria in the presence of a protonmotive force. Mitochondria incubated with NAD(P)H also presented intense generation and NO degradation rates that were insensitive to respiratory inhibitors and abolished after proteinase treatment. These results suggest that an outer membrane-localized NAD(P)H oxidase activity, in addition to the electron leakage from the respiratory chain, promotes -dependent NO degradation in rat liver mitochondria.  相似文献

Protonation of the Ca2+ ligands of the SR Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA1a) was studied by a combination of rapid scan FTIR spectroscopy and electrostatic calculations. With FTIR spectroscopy, we investigated the pH dependence of CO bands of the Ca2+-free phosphoenzyme (E2P) and obtained direct experimental evidence for the protonation of carboxyl groups upon Ca2+ release. At least three of the infrared signals from protonated carboxyl groups of E2P are pH dependent with pKa values near 8.3: a band at 1758 cm−1 characteristic of nonhydrogen-bonded carbonyl groups, a shoulder at 1720 cm−1, and part of a band at 1710 cm−1, both characteristic of hydrogen-bonded carbonyl groups. The bands are thus assigned to H+ binding residues, some of which are involved in H+ countertransport. At pH 9, bands at 1743 and 1710 cm−1 remain which we do not attribute to Ca2+/H+ exchange. We also obtained evidence for a pH-dependent conformational change in β-sheet or turn structures of the ATPase. With MCCE on the E2P analog E2(), we assigned infrared bands to specific residues and analyzed whether or not the carbonyl groups of the acidic Ca2+ ligands are hydrogen bonded. The carbonyl groups of Glu771, Asp800, and Glu908 were found to be hydrogen bonded and will thus contribute to the lower wave number bands. The carbonyl group of some side-chain conformations of Asp800 is left without a hydrogen-bonding partner; they will therefore contribute to the higher wave number band.  相似文献

An evolutionary game of individuals cooperating to obtain a collective benefit is here modelled as an n-player Prisoner's Dilemma game. With reference to biological situations, such as group foraging, we introduce a threshold condition in the number of cooperators required to obtain the collective benefit. In the simplest version, a three-player game, complex behaviour appears as the replicator dynamics exhibits a catastrophic event separating a parameter region allowing for coexistence of cooperators and defectors and a region of pure defection. Cooperation emerges through an ESS bifurcation, and cooperators only thrive beyond a critical point in cost-benefit space. Moreover, a repelling fixed point of the dynamics acts as a barrier to the introduction of cooperation in defecting populations. The results illustrate the qualitative difference between two-player games and multiple player games and thus the limitations to the generality of conclusions from two-player games. We present a procedure to find the evolutionarily stable strategies in any n-player game with cost and benefit depending on the number of cooperators. This was previously done by Motro [1991. Co-operation and defection: playing the field and the ESS. J. Theor. Biol. 151, 145-154] in the special cases of convex and concave benefit functions and constant cost.  相似文献

It is commonly believed that all membrane sterols are rigid all-trans ring systems with a fully extended alkyl side-chain and that they similarly influence phospholipid bilayer physical properties. Here, we report the sterol concentration-dependent, thermotropic phase behaviour of binary dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC)/sterol mixtures containing two similar 5α-H sterols with different functional group orientations (3α-OH or 3β-OH), which adopt an ideal all-trans planar ring conformation but lack the deformed ring B conformation of cholesterol (Chol) and epicholesterol (Echol), using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Our deconvolution of the DSC main phase transition endotherms show differences in the proportions of sterol-poor (sharp) and sterol-rich (broad) domains in the DPPC bilayer with increasing sterol concentration, which delineate gel/liquid-crystalline (Pβ′/Lα) and disordered gel (Lβ)/liquid-ordered (lo) phase regions. There are similarities in the DPPC main phase transition temperature, cooperativity and enthalpy for each 3β-ol and 3α-ol pair with increasing sterol concentration and differences in the parameters obtained for both the sterol-poor and sterol-rich regions. The sterol-poor domain persists over a greater concentration range in both 3α-ol/DPPC mixtures, suggesting that either those domains are more stable in the 3α-ols or that those sterols are less miscible in the sterol-rich domain. Corresponding parameters for the sterol-rich domain show that at sterol concentrations up to 20 mol%, the 5α-H,3β-ol is more effective at reducing the phase transition enthalpy of the broad component () than Chol, but is less effective at higher concentrations. Although mixtures containing Echol and 5α-cholestan-3α-ol have similar positive slopes below 7 mol% sterol, suggesting that they abolish the Lβ/lo phase transition equally effectively at low concentrations, Echol is more effective than the saturated 3α-ol at higher sterol concentrations. A comparison of obtained for the saturated and unsaturated pairs suggests that the latter sterols stabilize the lo phase and broaden and abolish the DPPC main phase transition more effectively than the saturated sterols at physiologically relevant concentrations, supporting the idea that the double bond of Chol and Echol promotes greater sterol miscibility and the formation of lo phase lipid bilayers relative to corresponding saturated sterols in biological membranes.  相似文献

The concept of an (M,R) system with organizational invariance allows one to understand how a system may be able to maintain itself indefinitely if it is coupled to an external source of energy and materials. However, although this constitutes an important step towards understanding the difference between a living and a non-living system, it is not clear that an (M,R) system with organizational invariance is sufficient to define a living system. To take a further step towards defining what it means to be alive it is necessary to add to a simple (M,R) system some property that represents its identity, and which can be maintained and modified in subsequent generations.  相似文献

Microsatellite loci are widely used for investigating patterns of genetic variation within and among populations. Those patterns are in turn determined by population sizes, migration rates, and mutation rates. We provide exact expressions for the first two moments of the allele frequency distribution in a stochastic model appropriate for studying microsatellite evolution with migration, mutation, and drift under the assumption that the range of allele sizes is bounded. Using these results, we study the behavior of several measures related to Wright’s FST, including Slatkin’s RST. Our analytical approximations for FST and RST show that familiar relationships between Nem and FST or RST hold when the migration and mutation rates are small. Using the exact expressions for FST and RST, our numerical results show that, when the migration and mutation rates are large, these relationships no longer hold. Our numerical results also show that the diversity measures most closely related to FST depend on mutation rates, mutational models (stepwise versus two-phase), migration rates, and population sizes. Surprisingly, RST is relatively insensitive to the mutation rates and mutational models. The differing behaviors of RST and FST suggest that properties of the among-population distribution of allele frequencies may allow the roles of mutation and migration in producing patterns of diversity to be distinguished, a topic of continuing investigation.  相似文献

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) play a dominant role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diabetes, commonly denoted Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). These CTLs (notably CD8+ T cells) recognize and kill insulin-secreting pancreatic β cells, reducing their number by ∼90%. The resulting reduction of insulin secretion causes the defective regulation of glucose metabolism, leading to the characteristic symptoms of diabetes. Recognition of β cells as targets by CTLs depends on the interactions between MHC-peptide complexes on the surface of β cells and receptors (TCRs) on T cells. Those CTLs with high affinity TCRs (also called high avidity T cells) cause most of the harm, while those with low affinity TCRs (also called low avidity T cells) play a more mysterious role. Recent experimental evidence suggests that low avidity T cells accumulate as memory T cells during the disease and may be protective in NOD mice (a strain prone to developing T1D), delaying disease progression. It has been hypothesized that such low avidity T cells afford disease protection either by crowding the islets of Langerhans, where β cells reside, or by killing antigen presenting cells (APCs).In this paper, we explore the hypothesized mechanisms for this protective effect in the context of a series of models for (1) the interactions of low and high avidity T cells, (2) the effect of APCs and (3) the feedback from β cell killing to autoantigen-induced T cell proliferation. We analyze properties of these models, noting consistency of predictions with observed behaviour. We then use the models to examine the influence of various treatment strategies on the progression of the disease. The model reveals that progressive accumulation of memory low avidity autoreactive T cells during disease progression makes treatments aimed at expanding these protective T cell types more effective close to, or at the onset of clinical disease. It also provides evidence for the hypothesis that low avidity T cells kill APCs (rather than the alternate hypothesis that they crowd the islets).  相似文献

The effect of the uremic solute indoxyl sulfate (IS) on scavenging superoxide anion radicals () generated from both the xanthine/xanthine oxidase (X/XO) system and activated neutrophils was investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, combined with 2-ethoxycarbonyl-2-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-1-oxide (EMPO). The findings show that the presence of normal-physiological serum concentrations of IS (0.1-10 μM) resulted in decreased formation of EMPO-superoxide adduct without affecting XO activity. Furthermore, IS showed scavenging activity against cell-derived generated from activated neutrophils. In addition, IS also eliminated hydroxyl radicals. These findings suggest that IS acts as a novel endogenous antioxidant under normal-physiological conditions.  相似文献

We have studied the naturally split α subunit of the DNA polymerase III (DnaE) intein from Nostoc punctiforme PCC73102 (Npu) using purified proteins and determined an apparent first-order rate constant of (1.1±0.2)×10-2 s−1 at 37 °C. This represents the highest rate reported for the protein trans-splicing reaction so far (t1/2 of 60 s). Furthermore, the reaction was very robust and high-yielding with respect to different extein sequences, temperatures from 6 to 37 °C, and the presence of up to 6 M urea. Given these outstanding properties, the Npu DnaE intein appears to be the intein of choice for many applications in protein and cellular chemistry.  相似文献

One of the most direct human mechanisms of promoting cooperation is rewarding it. We study the effect of sharing a reward among cooperators in the most stringent form of social dilemma, namely the prisoner's dilemma (PD). Specifically, for a group of players that collect payoffs by playing a pairwise PD game with their partners, we consider an external entity that distributes a fixed reward equally among all cooperators. Thus, individuals confront a new dilemma: on the one hand, they may be inclined to choose the shared reward despite the possibility of being exploited by defectors; on the other hand, if too many players do that, cooperators will obtain a poor reward and defectors will outperform them. By appropriately tuning the amount to be shared a vast variety of scenarios arises, including the traditional ones in the study of cooperation as well as more complex situations where unexpected behavior can occur. We provide a complete classification of the equilibria of the n-player game as well as of its evolutionary dynamics.  相似文献
