Small rodent populations were monitored by autumn snap trapping in 22 localities of Norway during the years 1971–979. A total of 105528 trap days yielded 7987 small mammals, out of which the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus and the short-tailed vole Microtus agrestis made up 52.3 and 29.0%, respectively. Third in abundance was the wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus .
Both M. agrestis and C. glareolus fluctuated fairly regularly, with general peak years of abundance in 1973 and 1977. Other Microtidae, such as M. oeconomus, C. rutilus and Lemmus lemmus apparently also exhibited cyclic fluctuations. In Arvicola terrestris, Apodemus , and in Sorex shrews, regular fluctuations could not be demonstrated, although the abundance varied considerably.
The body weights of sub-adult C. glareolus cycled in accordance with the fluctuations in abundance; the highest weights being recorded in peak years. In M. agrestis , this correlation was less obvious.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among three species of the genus Apodemus ( A. flavicollis, A. sylvaticus and A. agrarius ) from seven different localities in Serbia were estimated using arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR) profiling, which allowed clear distinction between the sibling species A. flavicollis and A. sylvaticus . Eight oligonucleotide primers out of the 22 screened, gained a total of 397 amplified bands. The average pairwise genetic distances within Apodemus species ranged from 0.51 between A. flavicollis and A. sylvaticus , to 0.74 between A. sylvaticus and A. agrarius. The large genetic distances obtained among populations of A. flavicollis (0.13) indicate that this part of the Balkan Peninsula was probably a refuge during the last glaciation. Furthermore, differences obtained between populations south and north from the river Danube suggest that this species survived the Last Glacial Maximum in at least two separate refuges. Although our data for molecular markers are from a limited number of localities, extended analyses of C-band distribution on chromosomes from previously studied localities south of the rivers Danube and Sava, indicate that distribution of A. sylvaticus is limited to northern Serbia. Therefore, it is possible that this part of the Balkan Peninsula was not a refuge for this species during the last glaciation.  相似文献

The use of arboreal runways by the rodents, Apodemus sylvaticus, A. flavicollis and Clethrionomys glareolus , was investigated in the deciduous woodland of Woodchester Park, Gloucestershire, England. Longworth live traps were tied to horizontal and inclining branches of trees and shrubs up to 3 m. Arboreality was extensive in all three species, although less in C. glareolus than in either Apodemus species. There was no indication that A. flavicollis consistently used arboreal runways more than A. sylvaticus but the data suggest that the peak of arboreal activity of these congeners occurred in different seasons. In A. sylvaticus , males were more arboreal than females and adults were more arboreal than juveniles. In, 4. flavicollis , juveniles were trapped significantly more often on arboreal runways than adults. The reasons for, and the consequences of, arboreality in small rodents are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the population biology of sympatric populations of Apodemus sylvaticus and A. flavicollis in western England. Annual changes in population siie closely resembled those seen in allopatric populations such that simultaneous peaks in number occurred only in autumn and early winter. Numbers of A. sylvaticus were low and stable in early summer increasing rapidly in late summer and autumn and remaining high throughout winter before a sharp decline in spring. Numbers of A. flavicollis increased after the start of reproduction and continued to rise throughout summer and autumn. The period of major decline of this species was during early winter. Densities of A. sylvaticus and A. flavicollis were comparable with those cited in allopatric studies. Spring populations of both species consisted of cohorts first appearing in the late summer and autumn of the previous year. Few individuals present in spring survived the summer. Reproduction of A. flavicollis commenced four to six weeks before that of A. sylvaticus . Seasonal variation in mean weight of adult males and females also indicates that those changes, due to the acquisition of secondary sex characteristics and reproductive maturity, occur earlier in A. flavicollis than in A. sylvaticus . Data presented contain no evidence of interspecific competition and it is concluded that interspecific differences, chiefly asynchrony in reproduction and annual population cycles, contribute to their stable coexistence.  相似文献

Motor asymmetry of paws was studied in three species of mouse rodents (Apodemus agrarius, Clethrionomys glareolus, Clethrionomys rutilus) from natural populations. The prevalence of right-hand asymmetry was revealed in both males and females of all studied species. The spatial and temporal variability of asymmetry structures was shown. The increased number of left-handed rodents was observed in unfavorable habitats. A possible adaptive role of the functional motor asymmetry exemplified by small rodents is discussed.  相似文献

The sequences of the mitochondrial DNA control region (D-loop) and flanking tRNA genes (about 1000 bp) of 20 samples of wood mice (genus Apodemus ) were analyzed in order to clarify the relationships between different species belonging to the genus. The phylogenetic trees obtained using different methods showed similar topologies with distinct Karstomys ( Apodemus epimelas and Apodemus mystacinus ) and Sylvaemus ( Apodemus alpicola , Apodemus flavicollis , Apodemus hermonensis , Apodemus sylvaticus and Apodemus uralensis ) subtrees. Within Sylvaemus all species appeared to be closely related to each other, probably as result of a bush-like radiation event. Nevertheless, A. hermonensis seemed to be the first diverging branch followed by A. sylvaticus ; A. alpicola and A. flavicollis appeared to be very closely related. Three individuals of uncertain taxonomical status were included in the analysis: hypotheses as to their status are discussed. Further phylogenetic analysis was carried out combining the D-loop sequences of part of the samples of certain taxonomical status with 12S rRNA and cytochrome b sequences obtained by other researchers. Furthermore, I present a structure analysis of the D-loop in Apodemus as compared other rodent species.  相似文献

In outdoor enclosures it is shown that weather and time of the year both modify the activity pattern. Background  

In rodents, the cell surface complement regulatory protein CD46 is expressed solely on the spermatozoal acrosome membrane. Ablation of the CD46 gene is associated with a faster acrosome reaction. Sperm from Apodemus flavicollis (yellow-necked field mice), A. microps (pygmy field mice) and A. sylvaticus (European wood mice) fail to express CD46 protein and exhibit a more rapid acrosome reaction rate than Mus (house mice) or BALB/c mice. A. agrarius (striped field mice) belong to a different Apodemus subgenus and have pronounced promiscuity and large relative testis size. The aim of this study was to determine whether A. agrarius sperm fail to express CD46 protein and, if so, whether A. agrarius have a faster acrosome reaction than Mus.  相似文献

The rabbit spermatogenesis was investigated in dynamics with morphology of testicular tissues being analysed. Allocation characteristic of spermatogenous epithelium cells in spermatic ductules was examined for 19 age groups of rabbit males aged from 10 days to 12 months. The availability of three types of spermatogonia A, intermediate and B was analysed. In has been determined that the age from 10 days to 4 weeks is optimal for isolation of testis stem cells, when rabbit spermatogonia are represented by spermatogonia of A-type only.  相似文献

Susceptibility of Apodemus sylvaticus and A. agrarius to infection with Acanthocheilonema viteae was compared with that of hamsters and jirds. Microfilaremia in A. sylvaticus was first noted on day 52 post-infection (p.i.) and lasted during the course of the study (up to day 150 p.i.). Maximum microfilaremic levels (female worm basis) of A. sylvaticus [mean +/- S.D. (n) = 690 +/- 1288(6)] were considerably higher than those of hamsters [16 +/- 18(6)] and jirds [51 +/- 25(5)]. Adult worm recovery in A. sylvaticus ranged from 2 to 40% of the number of infective larvae inoculated. Worm development in A. sylvaticus resembled that in hamsters and jirds. In contrast, microfilaremia was not detected in, nor adult worms recovered from A. agrarius throughout the study.  相似文献

Microsatellites were employed to estimate frequency of multiple paternity litters of two species of mice (genus Apodemus): striped field mouse (A. agrarius), and wood mouse (A. sylvaticus). Ten pregnant females of A. agrarius and six of A. sylvaticus were collected from natural populations in the northern Ukraine and analysed with 11 and nine microsatellite loci, respectively. Multiple paternity was indicated in eight of 10 litters in A. agrarius and in three of six litters in A. sylvaticus. Multiple paternity was documented at several loci (ranging from two to 10). In two cases (A. agrarius), three males were estimated to have fathered the litter.  相似文献

The spatial organization and relationships of Apodemus sylvaticus and A. flavicollis in mixed deciduous woodland were examined using live-trapping techniques. Each population was aggregated and contagion was greatest during early summer. Aggregation in A sylvaticus varied inversely with density so that at high densities this species was randomly dispersed. In A. flavicollis aggregation increased with increasing density. This interspecific difference may result from differing annual population cycles. Adult males, adult females and juveniles had different patterns of dispersion and association in A. sylvaticus and A. flavicollis suggesting differences in their social behaviour. Intraspecific associations, particularly among males and between males and females, made a major contribution to overall contagion in the populations. A. sylvaticus and A. flavicollis were segregated throughout the year except for late summer and they were also prevalent in different cover types. The behaviour which determined the spatial segregation of the species may be acquired since juvenile A. sylvaticus were associated more frequently with A. flavicollis and juvenile A. flavicollis were associated less frequently with A. sylvaticus than their respective adult conspecifics. Comparing sympatric with allopatric populations of A. sylvaticus , and observing inter-specific behaviour, suggest that the spatial segregation in sympatry results from A. sylvaticus avoiding the competitively superior A. flavicollis .  相似文献

PCR-RFLP techniques have been used to characterize wild and laboratory isolates of the trichostrongyle nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus from the wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus and the laboratory mouse Mus musculus respectively. Both isolates can be distinguished by eight endonuclease digestions of the ITS region of the rDNA repeat namely, Alu I, Dde I, Hpa II, Hae III, Hinf I, Hha I, Pvu II and Sal I. In two of the digests, Hinf I and Rsa I, a minor polymorphism was observed in the wild isolate of H. polygyrus which has been cultured in laboratory-bred A. sylvaticus for several generations when compared with H. p. polygyrus from wild A. sylvaticus. A minor polymorphism was also identified in further wild isolates of H. polygyrus collected from A. sylvaticus in a field site in Egham, Surrey. However no evidence of polymorphism was observed in the laboratory isolate of H. polygyrus from the CD1 strain of M. musculus and the laboratory-bred A. sylvaticus. Reasons for this are discussed and further studies on the population genetics of H. polygyrus are suggested.  相似文献

Island "races" of the field mouse ( Apodemus sylvaticus ) have often been used to support particular theories of colonization or microevolution. Comparisons between Apodemus from a group of four islands in the Inner Hebrides (Rhum, Muck, Eigg and Canna) give support to the idea that the amimals were introduced onto these islands by man—mice first becoming established on Eigg and thence being transported to the other islands.  相似文献

On the basis of the data reported in the literature a model is proposed describing the kinetics of the post-irradiation recovery of the main spermatogenous epithelium populations. In studying the spermatogenous epithelium structure of rodents and comparing the experimental and theoretical curves the parameters necessary for the kinetics estimations have been quantitated and their specific variations analysed. From these the parameters have been obtained and the kinetic curves shaped with a reference to human spermatogenous epithelium.  相似文献

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and triiodothyronine (T3) are known regulatory factors of spermatogenesis initiation. Connexin 43 (Cx43) is the most ubiquitous constitutive protein of gap junctions in the testis. This study evaluates the effects of the hyperstimulation of FSH and T3 during testicular maturation on Cx43 expression in the testis. The newborn, male Wistar rats were divided randomly into four experimental groups: FSH group-daily injections of FSH 7.5?IU/animal; T3 group-100?μg T3/kg body weight; FSH+T3 group-both substances; A control group-received vehicles in the same volume. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry and toluidine blue staining were used to determine the germ cell proliferation and degeneration. Cx43 immunolocalization was evaluated to find Cx43 maturational changes. Under FSH treatment, the proliferation rate was high so the total number of Sertoli cells increased with a low level of degeneration and lumen formation. T3 stimulation evoked a reduction in the proliferation rate and a decrease in Sertoli cell number but with intensive formation of lumen. T3+FSH inhibited the proliferation rate and stimulated lumen formation together with degeneration, which negatively influenced the number of germ cells in the seminiferous epithelium. We conclude that T3 action seems to be particularly connected with the maturation of Cx43 gap junctions. FSH stimulates maturation of Sertoli cell function, but this effect may take place regardless of the presence of Cx43-dependent intercellular communication. The hyperstimulation of both FSH and T3 damages Cx43 connections and hence evokes regressional changes in the seminiferous epithelium.  相似文献

We report a novel application of calcein-acetomethyl ester in flow cytometry for rapid estimation of the number of G+-bacteria in rodent feces (Apodemus sylvaticus and Mus sp.f. muridae). We also use the combined application of flow cytometry and Syto-13 or Sypro Orange staining to count rapidly the total bacterial population and to describe bacterial subpopulations in the intestine.  相似文献

Sry is the only gene on the Y chromosome that is required for testis formation in mammals. One of the earliest morphological changes that occurs as a result of Sry expression is a size increase of the rudimentary XY gonad relative to the XX gonad. Using 5'-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation to label dividing cells, we found that the size increase corresponds with a dramatic increase in somatic cell proliferation in XY gonads, which is not detected in XX gonads. This male-specific proliferation was observed initially in the cells of the coelomic epithelium and occurred in two distinct stages. During the first stage, proliferation in the XY gonad was observed largely in SF1-positive cells and contributed to the Sertoli cell population. During the second stage, proliferation was observed in SF1-negative cells at and below the coelomic epithelium and did not give rise to Sertoli cells. Both stages of proliferation were dependent on Sry and independent of any other genetic differences between male and female gonads, such as X chromosome dosage or other genes on the Y chromosome. The increase in cell proliferation began less than 24 hours after the onset of Sry expression, before the establishment of male-specific gene expression patterns, and before the appearance of any other known male-specific morphological changes in the XY gonad. Therefore, an increase in cell proliferation in the male coelomic epithelium is the earliest identified effect of Sry expression.  相似文献

Four species of wild rodents from the British Isles, Myocustor coypus (the Coypu), Apodemus sylvaticus (the Wood mouse). Mus musculus (the House mouse) and Clethrionomys glureolus (the Bank vole) were examined during 1918 and 1919 for the presence of coccidian parasites of the genus Eimeriu. From an examination of 852 faecal samples a total of 14 species of Eimeriu was found. Species identification was based mainly on the morphology of the sporulated oocyst. The number of host species examined and the overall prevalence of infection were as follows: 252 M. coypus (45·6% infected), 471 A. sylvaticus 56·5%), 59 M. musculus (42·4%) and 70 C. glureolus (22·9%). The results are compared with previous surveys and discussed in the light of the general knowledge concerning coccidial infections. The present work showed that prevalence of infection in the wild rodents studied may be influenced by the age, weight and sex of the host, and by season.  相似文献

Rodents, collected in three zoogeographical regions across Slovenia, were tested for the presence of bartonellae using direct PCR-based amplification of 16S/23S rRNA gene intergenic spacer region (ITS) fragments from splenic DNA extracts. Bartonella DNA was detected in four species of rodents, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus sylvaticus, Apodemus agrarius and Clethrionomys glareolus, in all three zoogeographic regions at an overall prevalence of 40.4%. The prevalence of infection varied significantly between rodent species and zoogeographical regions. Comparison of ITS sequences obtained from bartonellae revealed six sequence variants. Four of these matched the ITS sequences of the previously recognized species, Bartonella taylorii, Bartonella grahamii, Bartonella doshiae and Bartonella birtlesii, but one was new. The identity of the bartonellae from which the novel ITS sequences was obtained were further assessed by sequence analysis of cell division protein-encoding gene (ftsZ) fragments. This analysis demonstrated that the strain is most likely a representative of possible new species within the genus.  相似文献
