The reproductive attributes of commercially-produced Trichogramma platneri, T. minutum and T. pretiosum reared from eggs of both Ephestia kuehniella and Sitotroga cerealella were monitored at 25 C. The age-specific fecundity, longevity and progeny sex ratio and adult size were determined for individual females from all six combinations of Trichogramma and rearing host, using E. kuehniella as the experimental host. Rearing host had a significant influence on the lifetime fecundity, 3-day fecundity and longevity of all three Trichogramma species. In general, the performance of T. minutum and T. pretiosum was better when reared from S. cerealella, but that of T. platneri was superior when reared from E. kuehniella. The lifetime fecundity of the Trichogramma species was linearly related to longevity and the ranking between species was T. pretiosum > T. minutum > T. platneri. The age-specific pattern of oviposition for T. platneri was distinctly precocious, with 40% of its lifetime fecundity oviposited on the first day, in contrast to 17-24% for the other two species. Progeny sex ratio over the lifetime of the Trichogramma females was slightly male biased and differed significantly from 0.5 for T. minutum and T. platneri. Daily sex ratio for parasitoids reared from the most productive rearing host was female biased only for the first day of oviposition for T. platneri in contrast to the first 5-6 days of oviposition for the other two species. There was little evidence that any of the reproductive attributes of these Trichogramma species, reared from small host eggs, was dependent on the size of the adult females.  相似文献

Changes in host preferences are thought to be a major source of genetic divergence between phytophagous insect taxa. In western Europe, two sympatric taxa, O. nubilalis (the European corn borer) and O. scapulalis, feed mainly on maize and hop or mugwort, respectively. These two species may have diverged without geographic isolation after a host shift of ancestral populations onto maize or another cultivated species (e.g. sorghum). A previous study using inbred laboratory strains revealed that the two species differ in their oviposition choices in maize-mugwort tests. We sampled four natural populations in France (two of each taxon) and tested their oviposition behaviour toward four of their main host plant species: maize, sorghum, mugwort and hop. O. nubilalis females showed a very high preference for laying their eggmasses on maize, whereas O. scapulalis females displayed a more balanced range of preferences. O. nubilalis females were attracted slightly to sorghum, suggesting that this plant is an accidental, rather than a regular and ancestral host plant of O. nubilalis. One important result arising from this study is the significant proportion of eggs laid by both Ostrinia species on hop. This may explain why some stands of hop are sometimes not only infested by O. scapulalis but also by O. nubilalis larvae, a situation preventing assortative mating based on microallopatry. Hence, further studies must be conducted to see whether the host preference in the genus Ostrinia might be linked to assortative mating by a mechanism that is not mediated by the host plant.  相似文献

Venturia canescens (Grav.) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is a solitary larval koinobiont endoparasitoid, ovipositing in several larval instars of different pyralid moth species that are pests of stored food products. After oviposition, the host larva continues to feed and grow for at least several days, the precise time doing so depending on the stage attacked. We examined the relationship between host stage and body mass on parasitoid development in late second to fifth instars of two hosts with highly variable growth potential: the wax moth, Galleria mellonella (L) and the flour moth, Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller)(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). G. mellonella is the largest known host of V. canescens, with healthy larvae occasionally exceeding 400mg at pupation, whereas those of A. kuehniella rarely exceed 40 mg at the same stage. Parasitoid survival was generally higher in early instars of G. mellonella than in later instars. By contrast, percentage adult emergence in A. kuehniella was highest in late fifth instar and lowest in late second instar. A. kuehniella was the more suitable host species, with over 45% adult emergence in all instars, whereas in G. mellonella we found less than 35% adult emergence in all instars. Adult parasitoid size increased and egg-to-adult development time decreased in a host size- and instar-specific manner from A. kuehniella. The relationship between host size and stage and these fitness correlates was less clear in G. mellonella. Although both host species were parasitized over a similar range of fresh weights, the suitability weight-range of A. kuehniella was considerably wider than G. mellonella for the successful development of V. canescens. However, in hosts of similar weight under 5 mg when parasitized, larger wasps emerged from G. mellonella than from A. kuehniella. Parasitoid growth and development is clearly affected by host species, and we argue that patterns of host utilization and resource acquisition by parasitoids have evolved in accordance with host growth potential and the nutritional requirements of the parasitoid.  相似文献

Abstract: Mass rearing techniques are essential elements in developing a reliable and economic biological control method for Orius sauteri, a promising indigenous Orius species for biological control of Thrips palmi in greenhouses. Orius sauteri was reared on Ephestia kuehniella eggs and life history parameters and the minimum number of E. kuehniella eggs for rearing O. sauteri individuals were measured at 25°C and L16:D8. Developmental time during the nymphal stages was about 14 days for both sexes. Total fecundity and female longevity were 103.9 and 27.9 days, respectively. The intrinsic rate of natural increase per day was 0.115. An individual requires at least 30 eggs for nymphal development and survival and 20 eggs for adult oviposition and survival per four days.  相似文献

The effect of adult learning through an oviposition experience, and pre-adult learning through development inside a host was investigated in two strains of an Australian egg parasitoid,Trichogramma nrivelae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Host response was measured in two types of laboratory preference tests. In single host tests, females reared on three lepidopteran hosts (Heliothis punctigera (Noctuidae),Papilio aegeus (Papilionidae), andHypolimnas bolina (Nymphalinae)) were presented host eggs individually, and allowed two ovipositions. Pre-adult experience affected host preference in only one strain, while acceptance of a host was increased in both strains when they had previously oviposited in this host species. An oviposition experience had a stronger effect on host preference than pre-adult experience. In choice tests, pairwise combinations of hosts were arranged in an alternating grid. The ratio of host acceptances to host contacts was computed for the whole test and up to the first oviposition. These indicated that effects of rearing host were weak or absent, but the host chosen initially had a strong effect on host preference. Relative size of the hosts had a strong effect on choice of the first host. The implications of learning inTrichogramma are discussed in relation to host preference testing procedures and the selection of candidate strains for mass rearing and inundative release.  相似文献

Among the many topics of interest to ecologists studying associations between phytophagous insects and their host plants are the influence of natal host plant on future oviposition decisions and the mechanisms of generalist versus specialist host selection behavior. In this study, we examined the oviposition preferences, behavior and larval development of the tomato/potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli. By rearing psyllids with two distinct geographically-linked haplotypes on different host plants, we were able to examine the role of natal host plant and potential local adaptation on host plant usage. Choice bioassays among three host species demonstrated that psyllids from California had clear preferences that were influenced by natal plant. We further found that patterns in choice bioassays corresponded to observed feeding and movement responses. No-choice bioassays demonstrated that there is little to no association between development and host-plant choice for oviposition, while also indicating that host choice varies between haplotypes. These findings support the concept that mothers do not always choose oviposition sites optimally and also add support for the controversial Hopkins'' host selection principle.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction relies on the recognition of conspecifics for breeding. Most experiments in birds have implicated a critical role for early social learning in directing subsequent courtship behaviours and mating decisions. This classical view of avian sexual imprinting is challenged, however, by studies of megapodes and obligate brood parasites, species in which reliable recognition is achieved despite the lack of early experience with conspecifics. By rearing males with either conspecific or heterospecific brood mates, we experimentally tested the effect of early social experience on the association preferences and courtship behaviours of two sympatrically breeding ducks. We predicted that redheads (Aythya americana), which are facultative interspecific brood parasites, would show a diminished effect of early social environment on subsequent courtship preferences when compared with their host and congener, the canvasback (Aythya valisineria). Contrary to expectations, cross-fostered males of both species courted heterospecific females and preferred them in spatial association tests, whereas control males courted and associated with conspecific females. These results imply that ontogenetic constraints on species recognition may be a general impediment to the initial evolution of interspecific brood parasitism in birds. Under more natural conditions, a variety of mechanisms may mitigate or counteract the effects of early imprinting for redheads reared in canvasback broods.  相似文献

1. The importance of learning in parasitoids is likely to depend on how long learning effects persist, the number of learned stimuli that can be retained, and whether learning effects are confined to low ranked hosts.
2. The duration of learning of host-specific stimuli was tested in four strains of Trichogramma nr. brassicae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Both the persistence of learning of the rearing host and oviposition experience were tested in separate experiments.
3. The response to a non-preferred host, Sitotroga cerealella , was measured at different times following experience on that host or an alternative host, Heliothis punctigera . Both types of experience persisted for at least 5 days in all four strains.
4. The effect of oviposition in a highly preferred host, H. punctigera , following oviposition in S. cerealella was also tested. The increased acceptance of S. cerealella following oviposition on this host persisted despite a subsequent oviposition on H. punctigera .

1. Hopkins' host selection principle (HSP) states that insects should prefer foliage from their rearing host plant over that of an alternative host. 2. The current study tested whether eastern spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), that were laid and developed on, respectively, resistant and susceptible white spruce Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, showed differences in their feeding and oviposition preferences for these two hosts. 3. The data revealed that previous experience of spruce budworm on a host tree type does not influence the host acceptance and feeding behaviour of later larval stages. However, adult budworm reared on resistant white spruce needles preferentially selected susceptible white spruce needles as the host for their progeny, whereas those reared on susceptible needles showed no preference. 4. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of an insect showing an oviposition preference for the non‐rearing host plant. This would tend to increase mixing between insects from susceptible and resistant trees. The present results thus argue against Hopkins' HSP and suggest that learned aversion to resistant foliage experienced by larvae is carried into the adult stage.  相似文献

【目的】本文旨在评价斑痣悬茧蜂Metrorus pulchricornis(Wesmael)刺扎寄主的行为机理。【方法】采用非选择性试验于室内观察了刺扎次序对其产卵决策的影响;并采用双选试验观察了具有刺扎不同寄主(健康的、自身刺扎过的、他蜂刺扎过的寄主)的经历如何影响寄生蜂对自身刺扎与他蜂刺扎过的寄主的选择。【结果】非选择性试验结果表明:当面对健康寄主时,寄生蜂刺扎次序对刺扎耗时在5%概率水平上没有显著影响,但在10%概率水平具有显著影响;刺扎次序对寄生率没有显著影响,第1至5次刺扎的寄生率依次为63.3%、46.7%、76.7%、70.0%和66.7%。双选试验结果发现,刺扎不同寄主的经历处理对刺扎寄主选择性没有显著影响(P>0.05),具有刺扎健康的、自身刺扎过的和他蜂刺扎过的寄主的经历使寄生蜂选择被他蜂刺扎过的寄主的比例分别为65.5%、44.8%和50.0%。但刺扎经历显著影响刺扎耗时(P<0.05),具有1次刺扎健康寄主经历的蜂的刺扎耗时显著短(2倍)于具有刺扎自身刺扎过的寄主经历的蜂,但与具有刺扎他蜂刺扎过的寄主经历的蜂没有显著差异(P>0.05)。【结论】学习在斑痣悬茧蜂刺扎探测寄主行为的作用很小。  相似文献

Monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), occur world‐wide and are specialist herbivores of plants in the milkweed family (Asclepiadaceae). In North America, two monarch populations breed east and west of the continental divide in areas populated by different host plant species. To examine the population variation in monarch responses to different Asclepias species, we measured oviposition preference and larval performance among captive progeny reared from adult butterflies collected in eastern and western North America. Host plant use was evaluated using two milkweed species widely distributed in eastern North America (A. incarnata and A. syriaca), and two species common to western North America (A. fascicularis and A. speciosa). We predicted that exposure to different host plant species in their respective breeding ranges could select for divergent host use traits, so that monarchs should preferentially lay more eggs on, and larvae should perform better on, milkweed species common to their native habitats. Results showed that across all adult female butterflies, oviposition preferences were highest for A. incarnata and lowest for A. fascicularis, but mean preferences did not differ significantly between eastern and western monarch populations. Larvae from both populations experienced the highest survival and growth rates on A. incarnata and A. fascicularis, and we again found no significant interactions between monarch source population and milkweed species. Moreover, the average rank order of larval performance did not correspond directly to mean female oviposition preferences, suggesting that additional factors beyond larval performance influence monarch oviposition behavior. Finally, significant family level variation was observed for both preference and performance responses within populations, suggesting an underlying genetic variation or maternal effects governing these traits.  相似文献

In insects, like in other animals, experience‐based modulation of preference, a form of phenotypic plasticity, is common in heterogeneous environments. However, the role of multiple fitness‐relevant experiences on insect preference remains largely unexplored. For the multivoltine polyphagous moth Spodoptera littoralis we investigated effects of larval and adult experiences on subsequent reproductive behaviours. We demonstrate, for the first time in male and female insects, that mating experience on a plant modulates plant preference in subsequent reproductive behaviours, whereas exposure to the plant alone or plant together with sex pheromone does not affect this preference. When including larval feeding experiences, we found that both larval rearing and adult mating experiences modulate host plant preference. These findings represent the first evidence that host plant preferences in polyphagous insects are determined by a combination of innate preferences modulated by sensory feedback triggered by multiple rewarding experiences throughout their lifetime.  相似文献

Biological control requires specific tools for the accurate detection and identification of natural enemies, and to detect unusual variations in their density, which may follow changes in agricultural practices. Here we have developed specific molecular markers to detect Lydella thompsoni (Herting) and Pseudoperichaeta nigrolineata (Walker) (Diptera: Tachinidae) within the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). Primers amplifying fragments of the mitochondrial COI gene were designed following alignment of comparable sequences for a range of parasitoid and host species. Each of the primer pairs proved to be species specific to a tachinid species, amplifying DNA fragments of 191 and 91 bp in length for L. thompsoni and P. nigrolineata, respectively. This DNA-based technique allowed molecular evaluation of parasitism in O. nubilalis natural populations. In order to study the geographical distribution of both species in France, O. nubilalis diapausing larvae in maize stalks were collected from 12 locations over the whole country. The molecular evaluation of parasitism was compared with the traditional method of maintaining O. nubilalis populations in controlled conditions before breaking off the diapause. The percentage parasitism found in both species of tachinids was higher--approximately three times--using the molecular method, suggesting an underestimation by the traditional rearing protocol. Tachinid parasitism on O. nubilalis was not significantly different between geographical areas (south, central and north France) for both species. This study shows that molecular methods are very promising for the correct detection and identification of tachinid parasitoids in natural field populations.  相似文献

Variation in plant quality provides a basis for oviposition site selection for a variety of insects. Of the plant traits that influence plant–insect interactions, plant architecture has received little attention despite its putative role in modulating oviposition behavior. In a common garden comprised of native and non‐native plant species, we assessed how host plant architecture and identity influenced the oviposition behavior of 17‐year periodical cicadas (Homoptera: Cicadidae: Magicicada). On each host, we quantified the availability of branches suitable for oviposition and compared those measures with the branches used by ovipositing cicadas. Using this approach, we determined how the structural attributes of plants (i.e. branch diameter, length and incline) affected oviposition site selection. We then related cicada oviposition preferences to offspring performance by quantifying egg hatching success. On each host species, cicadas selectively used broader and longer branches for oviposition, suggesting that branch architecture provides a basis for oviposition behavior irrespective of plant identity. Broader and longer branches were more abundant on native than on non‐native hosts in our study, contributing to greater oviposition loads among the native species. Egg hatching success was similar among native and non‐native hosts. However, it is possible that the use of native plants for oviposition could enhance offspring output because native hosts generally contained more viable eggs per egg nest and more egg nests per plant. While previous accounts of cicada oviposition preferences have focused on differences in oviposition loads among hosts, our evaluation of within‐host branch selection by ovipositing cicadas helps to clarify oviposition preferences at a higher resolution and demonstrates that plant architecture provides an important basis for oviposition behavior. Furthermore, because branch structure can differ substantially among host species, our results suggest that periodical cicadas may be sensitive to the changes in plant composition that often result from non‐native plant invasions.  相似文献

Summary In Papilio machaon host plant utilization is argued to be proximally guided by adult and larval preferences, both of which are genetically determined. To decide whether these preferences are controlled by one or two gene complexes, oviposition preferences and larval survival of a Scandinavian population were investigated with regard to all potential host plants in the region. The experiments revealed a substantial difference between the potential host plant ranges of the adults and the larvae, indicating that adult and larval host plant preferences are determined by separate gene complexes.Based on this inference, a theoretical model is developed for the co-evolutionary relationship between adult oviposition preferences and larval feeding preferences for species in which the host plant choice is exercised by the adults.  相似文献

The oviposition behaviour of Dendrocerus carpenteri (Curtis), an ectophagous hyperparasitoid of aphidiine wasps inside mummified aphids was examined. Hyperparasitoids were provided in the laboratory with pea aphids ( Acyrthosiphon pisum ) which had been parasitized by three different species of aphidiine wasps ( Aphidius ervi, Ephedrus californicus and Praon pequodorum ) ranging in physiological age from the late larval stage to the late pupal stage. Females accepted only the hosts inside mummified aphids; they ignored live aphids, and did not accept dead, but not yet mummified aphids, although the latter were sometimes probed with the ovipositor. Female behaviour in handling A. ervi or E. californicus mummies did not change with experience; handling and oviposition times were stereotypic. However, naive females needed experience to locate the cocoon of P. pequodorum and distinguish it from the empty aphid mummy. Host acceptance and specificity were influenced more by the developmental stage than the species of the primary parasitoid. In dichotomous choice tests, hyperparasitoids 'preferred' prepupae over younger pupae of A. ervi , but they did not distinguish between these stages of E. californicus; older pupae were accepted at a low rate. Host preference was not influenced by conditioning on the rearing host. We consider several constraints on the host range of D. carpenteri , and discuss alternative explanations of differential hyperparasitism in the field.  相似文献

Reproduction and longevity of the anthocorid predators Orius laevigatus (Fieber) and Orius albidipennis (Reuter) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) were studied under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Three different diets were tested: eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth. Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, E. kuehniella eggs plus pollen, and pollen only. Small rooted plants of Spanish pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Creta, long red) served as oviposition substrate and moisture source. In all treatments, total fecundity, oviposition period and female longevity of O. laevigatus were greater than that of O. albidipennis. When a diet of E. kuehniella eggs was supplemented with pollen, total fecundity of O. albidipennis was increased by about 40%. Female O. albidipennis fed only pollen laid five times less eggs than those fed flour moth eggs and pollen; also, longevity of females was shorter when only pollen was offered as food. Fecundity and longevity of O. laevigatus were not influenced when supplementing a diet of E. kuehniella eggs with pollen. Females of O. laevigatus receiving only pollen reduced egg production by about 60% but had a similar longevity as those receiving a diet including flour moth eggs. In either species, preoviposition period and egg hatch were not affected by diet. The ability of both anthocorids to use pollen as an alternative or additional food is discussed in relation to their practical use in integrated control programmes.  相似文献

Models of the evolution of host shifts and speciation in phytophagous insects are often built upon the assumption that host selection is under simple genetic control, perhaps even a single locus. The genetic basis for differences in host-plant preference by ovipositing insects was investigated using two closely related species of swallowtail butterfly, Papilio oregonius and P. zelicaon, which differ in the plant families on which females oviposit. Both species had been shown previously to vary within populations in host selection. A combination of analyses using reciprocal interspecific crosses and isofemale strains within populations indicated that oviposition preference in these species is determined significantly by one or more loci on the X chromosome, which female Lepidoptera inherit only paternally. Hence, preferences in hybrid females tended toward the paternal species. This is the first insect group for which partial control of oviposition preference has been localized onto a particular chromosome. In addition, one or more loci on another chromosome(s) appear to contribute to preference, as indicated by the partially intermediate preferences of some hybrid crosses. The overall differences in preference in the reciprocal interspecific hybrids were restricted to differences in the distribution of eggs laid among the local host plants of these two Papilio species; the reciprocal crosses did not differ in the small percentage of eggs laid on a novel potential host species. The variation in host selection found among the isofemale strains reinforces earlier results for these strains, indicating that there is genetic variation in host selection within these populations. Overall, the results indicate that the evolution of oviposition preference in these species involves genetic changes at two or more chromosomes with the X chromosome playing an important role in determining preference.  相似文献

【背景】取食经历对植食性昆虫的寄主选择行为具有较大影响,影响天敌昆虫寄主专一性测定的设计和结果解释。【方法】采用选择性试验,观察了入侵豚草的重要天敌——广聚萤叶甲成虫羽化后取食不同植物对其后续产卵寄主选择的影响。【结果】与取食豚草的试虫相比,有取食三裂叶豚草、苍耳或菊芋经历的成虫选择苍耳产卵的频次增加,不再对豚草表现出明显的选择偏好性。对产卵识别期的Cox模型分析结果表明,成虫早期取食不同植物,对后续产卵选择有显著影响,成虫羽化后如果先取食豚草或三裂叶豚草,则选择苍耳产卵的倾向显著低于豚草;但如果先取食苍耳、菊芋和农家向日葵,则选择苍耳产卵的倾向与豚草无显著差异。【结论与意义】由此推测,广聚萤叶甲初羽化成虫取食的植物对其后续产卵选择具有较大影响,因而在寄主专一性测定中应关注测试前饲喂的植物种类。  相似文献

The connection between adult preferences and offspring performance is a long‐standing issue in understanding the evolutionary and ecological forces that dictate host associations and specialization in herbivorous insects. Indeed, decisions made by females about where to lay their eggs have direct consequences for fitness and are influenced by interacting factors including offspring performance, defence and competition. Nonetheless, in addition to these attributes of the offspring, a female's choices may be affected by her own prior experience. Here we examined oviposition preference, larval performance and the role of learning in the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus, which encounters diverse milkweed host species across its broad range and over the course of migration. Monarch females consistently preferred to oviposit on Asclepias incarnata subspecies pulchra. This plant, however, was associated with poor caterpillar growth, low sequestration of toxins and the highest plant defences (latex and trichomes). We examined flexibility in this apparently maladaptive preference by testing the impact of previous experience and competition on preference. Experience laying on an alternative plant species enhanced preference for that species in contrast to A. i. pulchra. In addition, presence of a (competing) conspecific caterpillar on A. i. pulchra had a strongly deterrent effect and reversed host plant preferences. Thus, monarch butterflies exhibit preferences contrary to what would be expected based on offspring development and sequestered defences, but their preferences are altered by learning and competition, which may allow butterflies to shift preferences as they encounter diverse milkweeds across the landscape. Learning and perception of threats (i.e. competition or predation) may be critical for most herbivorous insects, which universally experience heterogeneity among their potential host plants.  相似文献
