Sarcomeres, the smallest contractile units of striated muscle, are conventionally perceived as the most regular macromolecular assemblies in biology, with precisely assigned localizations for their constituent proteins. However, recent studies have revealed complex multiple locations for several sarcomere proteins within the sarcomere and other cellular compartments such as the nucleus. Several of these proteins appear to relocalize in response to mechanical stimuli. Here, we review the emerging role of these protein networks as dynamic information switchboards that communicate between the contractile machinery and the nucleus to central pathways controlling cell survival, protein breakdown, gene expression and extracellular signaling. 相似文献

The relationship between vertebrates and the principal model invertebrates - fruitflies and nematodes - is unclear. A fly-nematode grouping was becoming widely accepted, but recent comparisons of their genomes argue against this and link flies with the vertebrates instead. 相似文献

Seasonality, or periodic host absence, is a central feature in plant epidemiology. In this respect, seasonal plant epidemic models take into account the way the parasite overwinters and generates new infections. These are termed primary infections. In the literature, one finds two classes of models: high-dimensional elaborate models and low-dimensional compact models, where primary infection dynamics are explicit and implicit, respectively. Investigating a compact model allowed previous authors to show the existence of a competitive exclusion principle. However, the way compact models derive from elaborate models has not been made explicit yet. This makes it unclear whether results such as competitive exclusion extend to elaborate models as well. Here, we show that assuming primary infection dynamics are fast in a standard elaborate model translates into a compact form. Yet, it is not that usually found in the literature. Moreover, we numerically show that coexistence is possible in this original compact form. Reversing the question, we show that the usual compact form approximates an alternate elaborate model, which differs from the earlier one in that primary infection dynamics are density dependent. We discuss to which extent these results shed light on coexistence within soil- and air-borne plant parasites, such as within the take-all disease of wheat and the grapevine powdery mildew cryptic species complexes, respectively. 相似文献

Walter’s two-layer hypothesis revisited: back to the roots! 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Walter (Jahrb Wiss Bot 87:750–860, 1939) proposed a two-layer hypothesis, an equilibrium explanation for coexistence of savanna trees and grasses. This hypothesis relies on vertical niche partitioning and assumed that grasses are more water-use efficient than trees and use subsurface water while trees also have access to deeper water sources. Thus, in open savannas, grasses were predicted to predominate because of their water use efficiency and access to subsurface water. This hypothesis has been a prominent part of the savanna literature since first proposed. We review the literature on Walter’s hypothesis and reconsider his original intentions. Walter intended this hypothesis to be restricted to dry savannas. In his opinion, mesic and humid savannas were controlled by biotic factors and disturbances. We surveyed the global savanna literature for records of vertical niche partitioning by grasses and trees. We find that, within the scope of Walter’s original intentions, this hypothesis works remarkably well, and in some cases is appropriate for deserts as well as for dry temperate systems and even some mesic savannas. 相似文献

The burgeoning global problem of malaria is largely due to the emergence of parasite resistance to our limited armamentarium of antimalarial drugs. The recognition of this impending disaster at the international level and the engagement of the pharmaceutical industry promise a more optimistic future for antimalarial drug development. This is particularly exciting when considering the advances in our understanding of parasite biology, which are currently being fuelled by the malaria genome project. This article discusses recent developments in the area of antimalarial drug discovery and evaluation. New advances, based on traditional antimalarial drug classes including the quinolines, peroxides and antifolates (‘back to the future’), are discussed, followed by a presentation of some novel targets (‘young guns’) that have been shown to be good candidates for chemotherapeutic attack. 相似文献

‘Information’ and ‘code’ originated as technical terms within linguistics and information theory but are now widely used in
genetics and developmental biology. Against this background, it is examined if coded information distinguishes genes from
other information carriers, i.e., whether there are genetic words or sentences by virtue of the genetic code, and, if so,
whether they have any semantic content. It is concluded that there is no genetic language with semantic content, but that
the genetic code still enables unique language-like modes of transmission and interpretation of causal information. 相似文献

Alteration of the epigenome is associated with a wide range of human diseases. Therefore, deciphering the pathways that regulate the epigenetic modulation of gene expression is a major milestone for the understanding of diverse biological mechanisms and subsequently human pathologies. Although often evoked, little is known on the implication of telomeric position effect, a silencing mechanism combining telomere architecture and classical heterochromatin features, in human cells. Nevertheless, this particular silencing mechanism has been investigated in different organisms and several ingredients are likely conserved during evolution. Subtelomeres are highly dynamic regions near the end of the chromosomes that are prone to recombination and may buffer or facilitate the spreading of silencing that emanates from the telomere. Therefore, the composition and integrity of these regions also concur to the propensity of telomeres to regulate the expression, replication and recombination of adjacent regions. Here we describe the similarities and disparities that exist among the different species at chromosome ends with regard to telomeric silencing regulation with a special accent on its implication in numerous human pathologies. 相似文献
