Worldwide, seagrasses provide important habitats in coastal ecosystems, but seagrass meadows are often degraded or destroyed by cultural eutrophication. Presently, there are no available tools for early assessment of nutrient over-enrichment; direct measurements of water column nutrients are ineffective since the nutrients typical of early enrichment are rapidly taken up by plants within the ecosystem. We investigated whether, in a gradient of nutrient availability but prior to actual habitat loss, eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) plant morphology and tissue nutrients might reflect environmental nutrient availability. Eelgrass responses to nitrogen along estuarine gradients were assessed; two of these plant responses were combined to create an early indicator of nutrient over-enrichment. Eelgrass plant morphology and leaf tissue nitrogen (N) were measured along nutrient gradients in three New England estuaries: Great Bay Estuary (NH), Narragansett Bay (RI) and Waquoit Bay (MA). Eelgrass leaf N was significantly higher in up-estuary sampling stations than stations down-estuary, reflecting environmental nitrogen gradients. Leaf N content showed high variance, however, limiting its ability to discriminate the early stages of eutrophication. To find a stronger indicator, plant morphological characteristics such as number of leaves per shoot, blade width, and leaf and sheath length were examined, but they only weakly correlated with leaf tissue N. Area normalized leaf mass (mg dry weight cm−2), however, exhibited a strong and consistently negative relationship with leaf tissue N and a significant response to the estuarine nutrient gradients. We found the ratio of leaf N to leaf mass to be a more sensitive and consistent indicator of early eutrophication than either characteristic alone. We suggest the use of this ratio as a nutrient pollution indicator (NPI).  相似文献

A 3 year study (2000–2002) in Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor (BB/LEH), New Jersey (USA), was conducted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Science Research and Technology (DSRT) in cooperation with several partners to assess brown tide blooms in coastal waters in NJ. Water samples were collected by boat and helicopter at coastal stations from 2000 to 2002 along with field measurements. Aureococcus anophagefferens were enumerated and associated environmental factors were analyzed. A. anophagefferens abundances were classified using the Brown Tide Bloom Index and mapped, along with salinity and temperature parameters, to their geo-referenced location using the ArcView GIS. The highest A. anophagefferens abundances (>106 cells ml−1), including category 3 blooms (≥200,000 cells ml−1) and category 2 blooms (≥35,000 to ≤200,000 cells ml−1), recurred during each of the 3 years of sampling and covered significant geographic areas of the estuary, especially in Little Egg Harbor. While category 3 blooms were generally associated with warmer water temperatures (>16 °C) and higher salinity (>25–26 ppt), these factors were not sufficient alone to explain the timing or distribution of A. anophagefferens blooms. There was no significant relationship between brown tide abundances and dissolved organic nitrogen measured in 2002 but this was consistent with other studies. Extended drought conditions, with corresponding low freshwater inputs and elevated bay water salinities, occurring during this time were conducive to blooms. A. anophagefferens abundances were well above the reported levels that have been reported to cause negative impacts on shellfish. It was shown that over 50% of the submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) habitat located in Barnegat Bay/Little Egg Harbor was categorized as having a high frequency of category 2 or 3 blooms for all 3 years.  相似文献

The extent to which individual juvenile fish occupy specific sites is largely unknown. This complicates efforts to identify optimum habitats and habitat-specific information such as growth and mortality rates which, in turn, can influence recruitment success. Using tag-recapture information, we examined movements and growth of juvenile tautog (Tautoga onitis [L.]) and cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus [Walbaum]) in Great Bay-Little Egg Harbor estuaries in southern New Jersey. Fishes were trapped, tagged with small disks (bee tags), released in an embayment (mean depth = 2.5 m, mean salinity = 28‰) adjoining a tidal creek and recaptured from April through November 1992. Of 729 tautog (25-187 mm TL) released, there were 228 recaptures (31%) of 114 individuals, with a high percentage of recaptured individuals (37%) caught more than once (up to 13 times) during nearly 3 months at liberty. Of 410 cunner (24-99 mm TL) released, there were 95 recaptures (23%) of 66 individuals of which 30% were recaptured repeatedly (up to 6 times) over a 2-month period in summer and fall. Recaptured individuals of both species generally moved relatively little (< 22 m) from the common release site even though recapture efforts occurred over the scale of meters to kilometers. Age 1+ individuals tended to travel shorter distance than age 0 individuals for both species. The short distance traveled and high recapture rates indicate that these species exhibited strong site fidelity. The mean growth of both species was 0.25 mm day− 1 from spring through fall although growth varied between species, age class and season. These movement and growth characteristics indicate that at least some of the 0+ individuals “settle and stay” and 1+ individuals “return and stay” in estuarine habitats. The high site fidelity, in this and other studies, implies that growth rates may be good measures of habitat quality for tautog and cunner at least from spring through fall.  相似文献

Instantaneous growth rates of young-of-the-year winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum) (12.0-60.4 mm standard length, SL) and tautog Tautoga onitis (Linnaeus) (21.4-73.8 mm total length, TL) from three estuarine systems in New Jersey (Great Bay-Little Egg Harbor and Navesink River) and Connecticut (Hammonasset River) were used in an attempt to assess the relative quality of selected nominal habitats. A series of short-term field caging experiments were conducted during 1994 and 1995 in: macroalgae (primarily, Ulva lactuca), eelgrass (Zostera marina), unvegetated areas adjacent to macroalgae and eelgrass and tidal creeks in Spartina dominated marsh. Growth rates varied with habitat, estuary and year. Comparisons across nominal habitats within and among estuaries did not show any one habitat with consistently higher growth, and growth was relatively independent of whether a habitat was vegetated or adjacent to vegetation. The growth rates of winter flounder and tautog from the Hammonasset River were not different among habitats in either year of the study. In the Great Bay-Little Egg Harbor, both winter flounder and tautog had higher growth rates in macroalgae with growth in eelgrass varying significantly between years. Conversely, in the Navesink River both species had higher growth rates in eelgrass. Environmental changes associated with temperature and dissolved oxygen appeared to influence growth rates. Winter flounder growth rate and survival was depressed in tidal marsh creeks in the three estuaries and in vegetated macroalgae habitats in the Navesink River where dissolved oxygen levels were often very low (<2 mgl(-1)) for extended periods. In summary, the growth rates of the young-of-the-year of these two species varied temporally and were dependent on the interaction of both the specific estuary and habitat in which the experiments took place. Further, habitat quality, as defined by relative growth rate, was difficult to evaluate because it can be variable and nominal habitat designations are often not sufficient to define the boundaries of a species habitat requirements.  相似文献

Addition of nutrients to sediments has been proposed as a means of enhancing transplantation success in seagrasses. The effects of nutrient and iron additions to natural sediments on the growth and morphology of Posidonia australis transplants were evaluated in underwater plots in two contrasting environments: a coastal embayment (Princess Royal Harbour) with sandy sediments and little riverine input, and an estuary (Oyster Harbour) with organic-rich sediments and subject to seasonal river flow from a large rural catchment. Sixty six planting units spaced 1 m apart were transplanted in situ in each location. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were added in a randomized factorial design using slow release fertilizer granules at the start of the experiment and repeated every 4-5 months for 2 years. In a concurrent experiment, chelated iron Fe EDTA was added to modify the sediment sulphur cycle. In Oyster Harbour, the addition of N significantly increased leaf N concentrations but reduced total biomass and biomass of leaves. Addition of P significantly increased leaf P concentrations and number of living leaves per transplant, leaf area, leaf length, length of longest rhizome axis and total rhizome length. Combined N + P addition resulted in a significant increase in leaf P concentrations and leaf area per plant only. In Princess Royal Harbour, addition of N produced significant increases in leaf variables (total and leaf biomass, number of shoots and living leaves, leaf area, and leaf length) but there were no significant differences observed in below ground plant parts (rhizomes). Addition of P had no significant effects on any growth measurements. Addition of N + P combined increased number of living leaves and leaf area significantly. δ15N in mature leaf tissue were significantly more negative for N and N + P treatments at both locations. Our results indicated that N limitation was occurring in the coastal embayment, Princess Royal Harbour whereas in the more estuarine Oyster Harbour, P was limiting plant growth. Addition of FeEDTA produced equivocal results at both sites and we suggest these results are confounded by the addition of N and C in the EDTA. We caution the use of nutrient addition to transplants of slow growing seagrasses such as P. australis without a thorough understanding of the nutrient status of the system, estuarine or coastal embayment, in which they are to be transplanted.  相似文献

The role of sediment organic matter composition in larval habitat selection by the polychaete Capitella sp. I was investigated using a still water multiple-choice experiment. Specifically, the following question was addressed: what are the roles of sediment labile organic compounds in larval habitat selection? A replicated Latin-square design was used to test larval preferences among sediments collected from five sites (TLC—Tung Lung Chau; VHE—Victoria Harbor east; VH—Victoria Harbor; VHW—Victoria Harbor west; PC—Peng Chau) in the vicinity of Victoria Harbor, Hong Kong. Although mean grain size was not different among sites, water content and the total organic matter were higher in VH Mud but were similar among other sites. Carbohydrate, lipid, and biopolymeric fractions followed the same trend. According to protein content, sites were ranked as: VH > VHW > TLC = VHE > PC. PC Mud had the highest carbohydrate/protein ratio, due to low concentration of protein. According to larval preference, sites were ranked as: TLC = VH = VHW = VHE > PC. Our study shows a precise relationship between sediment biochemical properties and larval habitat selection. Larvae tend to choose sediments with low carbohydrate/protein ratio. Results suggest that types of sediment organic matter may play more important role in the larval habitat selection process of Capitella sp. I than concentration of organic matter alone.  相似文献

A case study on Centaurea gymnocarpa Moris & De Not., a narrow endemic species, was carried out by analyzing its morphological, anatomical, and physiological traits in response to natural habitat stress factors under Mediterranean climate conditions. The results underline that the species is particularly adapted to the environment where it naturally grows. At the plant level, the above-ground/below-ground dry mass (1.73 ± 0.60) shows its investment predominately in the above-ground structure with a resulting total leaf area per plant of 1399 ± 94 cm2. The senescent attached leaves at the base of the plant contribute to limit leaf transpiration by shading soil around the plant. Moreover, the dense C. gymnocarpa leaf pubescence, leaf rolling, the relatively high leaf mass area (LMA = 12.3 ± 1.3 mg cm−2) and leaf tissue density (LTD = 427 ± 44 mg cm−3) contribute to limit leaf transpiration, also postponing leaf death under dry conditions. At the physiological level, a relatively low respiration/photosynthesis ratio (R/PN) in spring results from high R [2.26 ± 0.59 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1] and PN [12.3 ± 1.5 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1]. The high photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency [PNUE = 15.5 ± 0.4 μmol (CO2) g−1 (N) s−1] shows the large amount of nitrogen (N) invested in the photosynthetic machinery of new leaves, associated to a high chlorophyll content (Chl = 35 ± 5 SPAD units). On the contrary, the highest R/PN ratio (1.75 ± 0.19) in summer is due to a significant PN decrease and increase of R in response to drought. The low PNUE [1.5 ± 0.2 μmol (CO2) g−1 (N) s−1] in this season is indicative of a greater N investment in leaf cell walls which may contribute to limit transpiration. On the contrary, the low R/PN ratio (0.05 ± 0.02) in winter is resulting from the limited enzyme activity of the respiratory apparatus [R = 0.23 ± 0.08 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1] while the low PNUE [3.5 ± 0.2 μmol (CO2) g−1 (N) s−1] suggests that low temperatures additionally limit plant production. The experiment of the imposed water stress confirms that the C. gymnocarpa growth capability is in conformity with the severe conditions of its natural habitat, likewise as it may be the case with others narrow endemic species that have occupied niches with similar extreme conditions.  相似文献

To examine the pattern of phylogeography of Ruditapes philippinarum, a length of 644-bp gene fragment of the mtDNA COI was sequenced. A total of 170 individuals from 19 locations were analyzed yielding 74 haplotypes, most of which were unique. The levels of haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity for the species ranged from 0.80 ± 0.16 (Notsuke Bay) to 1.00 ± 0.13 (Nanao Bay, Miyazu Bay, Dalian 1 and Ariake), and from 0.002 ± 0.001 (Notsuke Bay) to 0.011 ± 0.006 (Qingdao), respectively. Both the phylogenetic (NJ tree) and minimum spanning trees (MST) showed three significant genealogical clusters corresponding to sampling localities, a genetic differentiation speculated to be caused by the isolation of the marginal seas of the Northwestern Pacific during Pleistocene low sea-level stands. Both AMOVA and pairwise Fst analyses revealed significant genetic differentiation between the populations from Japan and China. The pattern of isolation by distance was also detected in this species (r = 0.50, P < 0.001). Both mismatch distribution analysis and the neutrality tests showed that R. philippinarum had undergone a recent population expansion. The estimate of population expansion time was about 425 kya-1580 kya.  相似文献

The effects of N and P enrichment were investigated on growth and physiological responses of dwarf Avicennia marina mangroves in a hypersaline (58 ± 8 psu) field site in Richards Bay, South Africa. It was hypothesized that at high salinities mangroves allocate more resources to roots than shoots, and that nutrient enrichment with N and P will shift resource allocation to shoots and enhance growth and productivity. In unvegetated areas of the dwarf zone, 1-year-old A. marina seedlings were planted in pots and enriched bimonthly with N, P, N + P, or remained unfertilized (control-C), and growth and morphology of plants were monitored for 2 years. Enrichment with N and N + P shifted resource allocation to shoots from 38% to 55%, and increased dry biomass accumulation by over 500%, compared to the control treatment. In the N and N + P treatments, plant height, number of leaves, leaf chlorophyll content and photosynthesis increased by over 50%, 330%, 30% and 30%, respectively, compared to the C and P treatments. Enrichment with N and N + P increased N concentrations in roots by over 60% (from 1.0 ± 0.1% to 1.6 ± 0.2% of dry mass) and in shoots by over 100% (from 1.3 ± 0.1% to 2.7 ± 02% of dry mass). Plants enriched with P alone were similar to those of the control. This study has demonstrated that dwarf A. marina in Richards Bay is N limited, and that N enrichment shifts resource allocation from roots to shoots and increases growth and productivity.  相似文献

We examined the coupling between eelgrass growth dynamics and surface irradiance over an annual cycle in four shallow estuaries of the Waquoit Bay system (MA, USA) that have similar physical characteristics, but are subject to different land-derived nitrogen loading rates and eutrophication. Contrary to our hypothesis, the results show that most measures of eelgrass demographics were positively correlated with surface irradiance in all four estuaries. Of the 45 regression models adjusted between irradiance and demographic variables (density, plastochrone intervals, and above- or belowground biomass, growth, and production, on both a per shoot and areal basis), only nine were non-significant, and only six of those corresponded to the eutrophic estuaries. There was a lack of correlation between shoot density and irradiance in the eutrophic estuaries, in contrast to the strong coupling in estuaries with the lowest nitrogen loads. Severe light limitation and other deleterious impacts imposed by macroalgal canopies on newly recruiting shoots in the eutrophic estuaries likely contributed to the lack of correlation between shoot density and irradiance at the water's surface. Because the range in eutrophication included the range of conditions at which eelgrass can survive, the relatively consistent temporal coupling between surface irradiance and most eelgrass demographic variables found here may also be a feature of other shallow temperate systems undergoing eutrophication, and indicates a measure of plant recruitment (density) to be one of the first parameters to become uncoupled from light reaching the water's surface.  相似文献

In shallow coastal habitats scavenging netted whelks Nassarius reticulatus attached egg capsules to the stipes of red algae Chondrus crispus and occasionally on Furcellaria lumbricalis and Plumaria plumose. In the laboratory egg capsules were laid on aquaria sides and lids by individuals ≥ 21 mm shell length. Larger size classes produced more egg capsules and spawned over a longer period and in doing so partitioned less energy into shell growth. Large netted whelks (25-28.9 mm) produced larger capsules which contained significantly more and larger eggs than those produced by smaller individuals (21-24.9 mm). Egg capsule production continued throughout the year by regularly fed N. reticulatus held at ambient seawater temperatures. Egg production increased in the spring and summer with peak production during June (15 °C), decreased between August and October and resumed again during the winter (November to February at ∼ 7 °C). During the summer (15-16 °C) egg capsules were smaller and contained smaller eggs than those deposited during the winter (7-10 °C), although the number of eggs · capsule1 was similar. Enforced food limitation reduced the number and size of the egg capsules, the number and size of eggs produced · female1 and the duration of the breeding period. Hatching success of N. reticulatus egg capsules was high (95%) even at winter seawater temperatures (11-8.5 °C) and the duration of embryonic development was fastest between 15 and 17.5 °C.  相似文献

Mesopodopsis africana is a key species in the St. Lucia Estuary, Africa's largest estuarine lake. This system is currently undergoing an unprecedented crisis due to freshwater deprivation. A reversed salinity gradient has persisted with hypersaline conditions (> 300) occurring in the upper regions of the estuarine lake. In the context of climate change, rising temperatures will not only push the thermal tolerance limits of estuarine organisms, but increased evaporation from this lake's large surface area will lead to further salinity increases. The present study aims to determine the temperature and salinity tolerance of M. africana, both through in situ studies and the use of laboratory experiments. Results indicate that M. africana is a broad euryhaline species. Mysids were recorded at salinity levels ranging from 2.55 to 64.5 in situ. While experiments revealed a narrower salinity tolerance, acclimation resulted in a significant increase in the tolerance range of this species. It is probable, however, that slower acclimation times may increase survival rates even further, particularly in the higher salinity treatments. M. africana was especially tolerant of the lower salinity levels. In the 20 °C acclimation experiment, LS50 at 1 and 2.5 was only reached after 8 and > 168 h, respectively. Survival at 10 and 40 °C was negligible at all salinity levels. This concurs with field results which documented mysids at temperatures ranging from 16.2 to 30.9 °C. Salinity and temperature increases associated with global climate change may, therefore, have significant implications for these mysid populations, with cascading effects on the higher trophic levels which they support.  相似文献

Salt marshes near urban, industrial and mining areas are often affected both by heavy metals and by eutrophic water. The aim of this study was to assess and evaluate the main processes involved in the decrease of nitrate concentration in pore water of mine wastes flooded with eutrophic water, considering the presence or absence of plant rhizhosphere. Basic (pH ∼ 7.8) carbonated loam mine wastes and free-carbonated acidic (pH ∼ 6.2) sandy-loam mine wastes were collected from polluted coastal salt marshes of SE Spain which regularly receive nutrient-enriched water. The wastes were put in pots and flooded for 15 weeks with eutrophic water (dissolved organic carbon ∼26 mg L−1, PO43− ∼23 mg L−1, NO3 ∼180 mg L−1). Three treatments were assayed for each type of waste: pots with Sarcocornia fruticosa, pots with Phragmites australis and unvegetated pots. Soluble organic carbon, nitrate, soluble Cd, Pb and Zn, pH and Eh were monitored. But the 2nd day of flooding, nitrate concentrations had decreased between 70% and 90% (equivalent to 1.01-1.12 g N-NO3 m−2 day−1) with respect to the content in the water used for flooding, except in unvegetated pots with acidic wastes. Denitrification was the main mechanism associated with the removal of nitrate. The role of vegetation in improving the rhizospheric environment was relevant in the acidic wastes because higher sand content, lower pH and higher soluble metal concentrations might strongly hinder microbial activity Hence, revegetation of salt marshes polluted by acidic sandy mining wastes might improve the capacity of this type of environment to act as a green filter against excessive nitrate contents flowing through them.  相似文献

Freshwater inflows from river diversions may affect nekton populations by altering the salinity and temperature of estuarine waters. To investigate the influence of these environmental variables on the growth and survival rates of brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus and white shrimp Litopenaeus setiferus, we conducted field experiments in May and September 2007 to expose experimental animals to the range of different combinations of salinity and water temperature that commonly occur in an estuarine environment. Growth rates for shrimp held in mesocosms for approximately 7 days were compared among four locations and three treatments; locations were identified by the dominant marsh vegetation and distance from the Gulf of Mexico (low to high salinity: Intermediate, Brackish, Saline UE = Saline Up Estuary, Saline DE = Saline Down Estuary). At each location, the treatments were replicated four times and included shallow water with additional food, shallow water without food added, and deeper water (an attempt to expose animals to lower temperatures). Our experiments were designed to test the null hypothesis that shrimp growth and survival rates did not differ by location or treatment. Both brown shrimp and white shrimp grew more slowly at the Intermediate than higher salinity locations. Potential prey (benthic infauna) biomass was relatively low at both the Intermediate and Brackish locations in May, and both shrimp species consistently grew faster in mesocosms where food was added. We conclude that reduced growth in low salinity environments is likely due to the combined effects of increased metabolic costs and less food in these areas. River diversions that reduce estuarine salinities over a large portion of available habitat during peak recruitment periods may reduce overall growth rates and shrimp productivity in the affected areas.  相似文献

Glaucium flavum Crantz. is found in an anthropized coastal grassland at the joint estuary of the Tinto and Odiel rivers (SW Spain), growing under the influence of high levels of copper contamination derived from nearby petrochemical industries, with no obvious adverse affects on the performance of the plant. In addition, this species exhibits a series of ecological characteristics which may render it appropriate for use in the phytoremediation of contaminated areas. Nonetheless, the response of G. flavum to elevated copper concentrations has not been studied. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of a range of Cu concentrations (0 to 47 mmol l−1) on the growth, reproduction and photosynthetic performance of G. flavum, by measuring relative growth rate, fruit and seed production, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, gas exchange and photosynthetic pigment concentrations. We also determined total copper, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulphur, calcium and magnesium concentrations. G. flavum survived with concentrations of up to 730 mg Cu kg−1 DW in the leaves, when treated with 30 mmol Cu l−1 (2000 mg l−1). Quantum efficiency of PSII, net photosynthesis rate, as well as leaf Ca and Mg concentrations were all negatively affected by Cu concentrations greater than 9 mmol l−1 in the nutrient solution. Our results indicate that the reduction in photosynthetic performance may be attributed to the adverse effect of excess Cu on the photosynthetic apparatus of the plant, both directly, via a decrease in pigment concentrations, and indirectly, via interference of Cu with Ca ions of PSII. Growth and seed production were only slightly affected by leaf tissue concentrations as high as 230 mg Cu kg−1 dry mass, which suggests that this species could play an important role in phytoremediation of Cu-contaminated soils.  相似文献

We tested the effects of UV radiation (UVR) and nitrate limitation on the production of dimethylsulfide (DMS), particulate dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSPp), and particulate dimethylsulfoxide (DMSOp) in natural seawater from the Gulf of Mexico and in phytoplankton cultures. DMS/Chl a ratios in PAR-only and PAR + UV-exposed seawater were 0.44–2.0 and 0.46–1.9 nmol DMS μg−1 Chl a, respectively, whereas the ratios in cultures of Amphidinium carterae were 1.0–2.2 nmol μg−1 in PAR-exposed samples and 0.91–2.1 nmol μg−1 in PAR + UV-exposed samples. These results suggested that UVR did not substantially affect DMS/Chl a ratios in seawater and A. carterae culture samples. Similarly, UVR had no significant effect on DMSOp/Chl a in seawater samples (0.83–1.6 nmol DMSO μg−1 Chl a for PAR + UV vs. 0.70–1.5 nmol μg−1 for PAR-exposed seawater samples, respectively) or in A. carterae cultures (0.20–1.3 and 0.19–0.88 nmol DMSO μg−1 Chl a in PAR + UV- and PAR-exposed cultures, respectively). In an experiment with the diatom, Thalassiosira oceanica, the culture was grown in high nitrate (30 μM) or low nitrate (6 μM) media and exposed to PAR-only or PAR + UV. The low nitrate, PAR-only samples showed an increase of intracellular dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) concentration from 2.1 to 15 mmol L−1 in 60 h, but the increase occurred only after cultures reached the stationary phase. Cultures of T. oceanica grown under UVR had lower growth rates than those under PAR-only (μ′ = 0.17 and 0.32 d−1, respectively) and perhaps did not experience severe nitrate limitation even in the low nitrate treatment. These results suggest that the elevated UVR in low nitrate environments could result in reduction of DMSP in some species, whereas DMSP concentrations would not be affected in eutrophic areas.  相似文献

In recent years, several sensor-based approaches have been established to early detect single plant stresses, but the challenge of discriminating between simultaneously occurring stressors still remains. Earlier studies on wheat plants strongly affected by pathogens and nitrogen deficiency indicated that chlorophyll fluorescence might be suited to distinguish between the two stressors. Nevertheless, there is lack of information on the pre-symptomatic detection of synchronized occurrence of slight N-deficiency and the early stages of pathogen infection. The usefulness of the blue, green, and yellow fluorescence signals in this context has not yet been explored. We hypothesized that differentiation between wheat plants’ physiological reaction due to N-deficiency and leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) as well as N-deficiency and powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici) might be accomplished by means of UV laser-induced fluorescence spectral measurements between 370 and 620 nm in addition to chlorophyll fluorescence (640-800 nm). Plants were provided with either a normal or a modified Hoagland nutrient solution in order to induce a slight N deficit. Pathogen inoculation was carried out on the second fully developed leaf. Four experimental groups were evaluated: (a) N-full-supply [N+]; (b) N-deficiency [N−]; (c) N-full-supply + pathogen [N+/LR] or [N+/PM]; (d) N-deficiency + pathogen [N−/LR] or [N−/PM]. The results revealed that, in addition to the amplitude ratio of R/FR fluorescence, B/G fluorescence also facilitated reliable and robust discrimination among the four experimental groups. The discrimination among the experimental groups was accomplished as early as one and two days after inoculation for powdery mildew and leaf rust infection, respectively. During the 3 days evaluation period, the differences among the treatment groups became more evident. Moreover, several other amplitude ratios and half-bandwidth ratios proved to be suited to early detect fungal infection, irrespective of the nitrogen status of the plant.  相似文献

Fluxes of oxygen, inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and denitrification (isotope pairing) were measured from January 1997 to February 1998 via intact cores incubation in a shallow brackish area within the eutrophic Valli di Comacchio (northern Adriatic coast, Italy). Rates were measured in the light and in the dark in sediments colonized by the rooted macrophyte Ruppia cirrhosa and in adjacent sediments with benthic microalgae. Ruppia biomass (25-414 g DW m− 2) exhibited a seasonal evolution whilst that of microphytobenthos (12-66 mg chl a m− 2) was more erratic. Net (NP) and gross (GP) primary productivity was 1.15 and 6.89 mol C m− 2y− 1 for bare and 25.4 and 51.7 mol C m− 2y− 1 for Ruppia vegetated sediments. Nitrogen pools in Ruppia standing stock varied from 43.6 to 631.4 (annual average 201.2) mmol N m− 2; the macrophyte N content was correlated with DIN concentration in the water column. Estimated N pool in microphytobenthos was one order of magnitude lower (from 2.4 to 14.5 mmol N m− 2, annual average 7.2). Theoretical DIN assimilation calculated from NP was 127.8 and 1112.6 mmol N m− 2y− 1 whilst that calculated from GP was 765 and 2282 mmol N m− 2y− 1 for microphytobenthos and Ruppia respectively. Measured annual fluxes of DIN were 974.6 and − 577 mmol N m− 2y− 1 in bare and Ruppia vegetated sediments meaning that the two sites were a source and sink for DIN and that from 25 to 50% of Ruppia annual DIN requirements came from the water column. During the period of this study total denitrification was lower in the macrophyte colonized (92.3 mmol N m− 2y− 1) compared to bare sediments (163.3 mmol N m− 2y− 1) as a probable consequence of higher competition between denitrifiers and phanerogams. At both sites the ratio between denitrification of water column nitrate (DW) and denitrification coupled to nitrification (DN) was >1.6 due to little oxygen penetration in reducing sediments (< 1.2 mm) and scarce nitrification activity. DW (0-35 µmol N m− 2h− 1) was significantly correlated with water column NO3−  (2-16 µM). Theoretical DIN assimilation to denitrification ratio varied from 12.0 to 24.8 for Ruppia vegetated and from 0.8 to 4.7 for unvegetated sediments. At Valle Smarlacca, Ruppia may influence nitrogen cycling by incorporating large DIN pools in biomass which is scattered in surrounding areas and fuels intense bacterial activity. With increasing anthropogenic nutrient input and insignificant organic matter export in the open sea the already severe eutrophic conditions are enhanced and may accelerate the decline of the macrophyte meadow.  相似文献

We compared the growth responses of the floating-leaved species Nymphoides peltata to gradual and rapid rising water levels under two nutrient concentrations (1 g and 12 g of slow released fertilizer (N-P-K: 16-8-12) per container filled with 8 kg washed sand), and predicted the population expansion after these floods. The results showed that the capacity for petiole elongation was dependent on leaf age, and only leaves that were no more than five days old had the capability to reach the water surface when the water level increased rapidly from 50 cm to 300 cm. Plants subjected to a gradual rising water level tracked the increase in water depth whose petioles elongated at 3.96 ± 1.70 cm per day and 4.80 ± 0.16 cm per day under low and high nutrient concentrations respectively throughout the experiment period. When water levels were rapidly raised, leaf petioles elongated rapidly at 25.48 ± 1.51 cm per day and 26.64 ± 2.24 cm per day under low and high nutrient concentrations respectively during the first ten days. Plants under a constant water level maintained highest mean leaf recruitment (mean 3.0 ± 0.33 leaves and 24.4 ± 5.87 leaves every ten days under low and high nutrient concentrations, respectively). Therefore, more young leaves existed in the canopy ensuring that when the water level increases, young leaves can rapidly emerge after submergence. Gradual water level rise did not significantly affect biomass and ramet production (4.75 ± 1.41 g and 5.50 ± 1.22 ramets in low nutrient; 48.49 ± 21.45 g and 35.67 ± 11.78 ramets in high nutrient), but rapid water level rise negatively affected ramet production in both nutrient concentrations (3.00 ± 1.26 ramets and 11.25 ± 4.19 ramets in low and high nutrients, respectively). The results indicated that continual leaf recruitment and rapid petiole elongation were both important ways in which N. peltata adapted to increasing water levels. Extreme flooding may be a disturbance factor that affects plant growth and the population expansion of N. peltata, while small gradual water level rise should not harm this species.  相似文献

Previous work demonstrated that a mixture of NH4Cl and KNO3 as nitrogen source was beneficial to fed-batch Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis cultivation, in terms of either lower costs or higher cell concentration. On the basis of those results, this study focused on the use of a cheaper nitrogen source mixture, namely (NH4)2SO4 plus NaNO3, varying the ammonium feeding time (T = 7-15 days), either controlling the pH by CO2 addition or not. A. platensis was cultivated in mini-tanks at 30 °C, 156 μmol photons m−2 s−1, and starting cell concentration of 400 mg L−1, on a modified Schlösser medium. T = 13 days under pH control were selected as optimum conditions, ensuring the best results in terms of biomass production (maximum cell concentration of 2911 mg L−1, cell productivity of 179 mg L−1 d−1 and specific growth rate of 0.77 d−1) and satisfactory protein and lipid contents (around 30% each).  相似文献
