Purpose

In the last decade, the use of life cycle assessment (LCA) as a tool for selection between different technologies or products fulfilling the same function has spread rapidly in Latin American countries. However, this accelerated growth in the use of LCA has not always been supported with progress in construction of local inventories or the development of impact assessment methods that consider local and regional characteristics of the sites where technologies, products, and activities or services are being produced or developed. The aim of this study is to propose a local methodology to estimate regional factors for the terrestrial acidification impact category in Argentina based on the critical load exceedance in sensitive areas.

Material and methods

Acidification factors for ecological regions in Argentina were calculated following a procedure that compares acidic deposition with critical loads, using a linear function to represent the damage, when the deposition is above the soil buffering capacity. The acidic deposition in the study area was estimated using the air transport model wind trajectory model, with emissions from the global inventory EDGAR. Detailed soil maps were used in order to include the acidification sensitivity of the receiving ecosystems. Also, an application case of the calculated factors is presented in order discuss the relevance of the regional factors implementation in local studies.

Results and discussion

Deposition fluxes were estimated for different ecoregions in Argentina. The regional factors calculated differ from site-generic factors used commonly to estimate potential impacts, demonstrating that their use in local studies could lead to erroneous outcomes. This was more evident in the application case, where the potential impact calculated was very different, depending on the impact factor used.

Conclusions and recommendations

The model presented in this study allows the assessment of the impact caused by deposition of acidifying substances emitted during the life cycle of a product or process, taking into account the local characteristics where the intervention occurs, and it is the first development of a regional model for acidification within the LCA context carried out in Argentina. The obtained results highlight the importance of developing regional characterization factors for local or regional impacts referred to a definite region.  相似文献

Question

Identifying the factors that lead to the success of restoration projects has been a major challenge in ecological restoration. Here we ask which factors, aside from time since restoration began, drive the recovery of tree biomass, density and richness of the understorey in riparian forests undergoing restoration.

Location

Semideciduous Atlantic Forest with tropical climate and deep, fertile soils, southeast Brazil.

Methods

We sampled tree basal area (DBH ≥ 5 cm), density and richness of the understorey (DBH < 5 cm) in 26 riparian forests undergoing restoration (a chronosequence spanning 4–53 years). We assessed the following variables as possible factors, besides time, influencing community attributes: (1) planting design: density and richness of seedlings planted; (2) landscape features: proximity index measuring forest cover within a 1.5‐km radius, distance and size of the nearest forest remnant; and (3) environmental factors: invasive grasses, soil fertility, drought, average annual precipitation and proportion of fine particles in the soil. We performed correlation analyses including predictor and response variables, followed by stepwise backward regression (AIC), multiple and simple linear regressions, to investigate the relationships between those factors and the community attributes.

Results

Tree basal area was primarily influenced by the proportion of small particles in the soil (+) and secondarily by rainfall (?). Understorey richness was influenced by the combination of size (+) and distance (?) of the nearest patch, rainfall (?) and soil fertility (+). Understorey density was primarily influenced by the size of the nearest forest remnant (+) and secondarily by invasive grasses (?). No influence of density or richness of the seedlings planted was observed.

Conclusion

Environmental factors and landscape configuration drive the recovery of tree biomass, density and richness in communities undergoing restoration. The most relevant ecological filters influencing restoration success are availability of soil water and nutrients and the distance and size of the nearest remnant of native vegetation. The expected influence of richness and density of seedlings planted, considered for many years as important drivers of forest restoration success, was not confirmed in this study.  相似文献

Purpose

Though the development of biofuel has attracted numerous studies for quantifying potential water demand applying life cycle thinking, the impacts of biofuel water consumption still remain unknown. In this study, we aimed to quantify ecological impact associated with corn-based bioethanol water consumption in Minnesota in responding to different refinery expansion scenarios by applying a life cycle impact assessment method.  相似文献

Background

α-Amylase inhibitors are attractive candidates for the control of seed weevils, as these insects are highly dependent on starch as an energy source. In this study, we aimed to reveal the structure and diversity of dimeric α-amylase inhibitor genes in wild emmer wheat from Israel and to elucidate the relationship between the emmer wheat genes and ecological factors using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Another objective of this study was to find out whether there were any correlations between SNPs in functional protein-coding genes and the environment.  相似文献

Background

A number of algorithms have been developed for calculating the quartet distance between two evolutionary trees on the same set of species. The quartet distance is the number of quartets – sub-trees induced by four leaves – that differs between the trees. Mostly, these algorithms are restricted to work on binary trees, but recently we have developed algorithms that work on trees of arbitrary degree.  相似文献

Purpose

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been identified as one of Unilever’s priority environmental impact themes: this assessment was therefore conducted to help the Knorr brand measure and understand the GHG emissions related to its product portfolio, identify opportunities to manage GHG emissions in the Unilever-owned operations (manufacture) and influence managed reductions elsewhere in the Knorr product lifecycles, and assess the impact of the brand’s innovation and portfolio strategies on its GHG footprint.  相似文献

Purpose

This paper describes part of the first detailed environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of Australian red meat (beef and sheep meat) production. The study was intended to assist the methodological development of life cycle impact assessment by examining the feasibility of new indicators for natural resource management (NRM) issues relevant to soil management in agricultural LCA. This paper is intended to describe the NRM indicators directly related to agricultural soil chemistry.  相似文献

Background

Much communicable disease control research has had little impact on local control programme policy and practice for want of an operational component. The operational research model – the systematic search for knowledge on interventions, tools or strategies that enhance programme effectiveness – is gaining recognition as an appropriate method for addressing perplexing questions within public health programmes.  相似文献

This study explores the relationship between impact severity and resulting pulmonary contusion (PC) for four impact conditions using a rat model of the injury. The force–deflection response from a Finite Element (FE) model of the lung was simultaneously matched to experimental data from distinct impacts via a genetic algorithm optimization. Sprague-Dawley rats underwent right-side thoracotomy prior to impact. Insults were applied directly to the lung via an instrumented piston. Five cohorts were tested: a sham group and four groups experiencing lung insults of varying degrees of severity. The values for impact velocity (V) and penetration depth (D) of the cohorts were Group 1, (V = 6.0 m · s−1, D = 5.0 mm), Group 2, (V = 1.5 m · s−1,D = 5.0 mm), Group 3, (V = 6 m · s−1, D = 2.0 mm), and Group 4, (V = 1.5 m · s−1, D = 2.0 mm). CT scans were acquired at 24 h, 48 h, and 1 week post-insult. Contusion volume was determined through segmentation. FE-based injury metrics for PC were determined at 24 h and 1 week post-impact, based on the observed volume of contusion and first principal strain. At 24 h post-impact, the volume of high radiopacity lung (HRL) was greatest for the severe impact group (mean HRL = 9.21 ± 4.89) and was significantly greater than all other cohorts but Group 3. The concurrent optimization matched simulated and observed impact energy within one standard deviation for Group 1 (energy = 3.88 ± 0.883 mJ, observed vs. 4.47 mJ, simulated) and Group 2 (energy = 1.46 ± 0.403 mJ, observed vs. 1.50 mJ, simulated) impacts. Statistically significant relationships between HRL and impact energy are presented. The FEA-based injury metrics at 24 h post-contusion are emax·[(e)\dot]max{\varepsilon_{\max}\cdot \dot {\varepsilon}_{\max}} exceeding 94.5 s−1, ε max exceeding 0.284 and [(e)\dot]max{\dot{\varepsilon}_{\max}} exceeding 470 s−1. Thresholds for injury to the lung still present at 1 week post-impact were also determined. They are emax·[(e)\dot]max{\varepsilon_{\max}\cdot \dot {\varepsilon}_{\max}} exceeding 149 s−1, ε max exceeding 0.343 and [(e)\dot]max{\dot{\varepsilon}_{\max}} exceeding 573 s−1. A mesh sensitivity study found that thresholds based on strain rate were more sensitive to changes to mesh density than the threshold based on strain only.  相似文献

Aims

The objective of this work was to design an amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP)‐derived specific primer for the detection of Fusarium solani aetiological agent of peanut brown root rot (PBRR) in plant material and soil.

Methods and Results

Specific primers for the detection of the pathogen were designed based on an amplified region using AFLPs. The banding patterns by AFLPs showed that isolates from diseased roots were clearly distinguishable from others members of the F. solani species complex. Many bands were specific to F. solani PBRR, one of these fragments was selected and sequenced. Sequence obtained was used to develop specific PCR primers for the identification of pathogen in pure culture and in plant material and soil. Primer pair FS1/FS2 amplified a single DNA product of 175 bp. Other fungal isolates occurring in soil, included F. solani non‐PBRR, were not detected by these specific primers. The assay was effective for the detection of pathogen from diseased root and infected soils.

Conclusions

The designed primers for F. solani causing PBRR can be used in a PCR diagnostic protocol to rapidly and reliably detect and identify this pathogen.

Significance and Impact of the Study

These diagnostic PCR primers will aid the detection of F. solani causing PBRR in diseased root and natural infected soils. The method developed could be a helpful tool for epidemiological studies and to avoid the spread of this serious disease in new areas.  相似文献

Purpose

This paper aims at spelling out the area of protection (AoP), namely the general concept of human well-being and the impact categories in social life cycle assessment (SLCA). The applicability of the so-called capabilities approach—a concept frequently used for evaluating human lives—is explored. It is shown how the principles of the capabilities approach can be transferred to the impact assessment within SLCA.  相似文献

Background

Obesity is a common disorder with a negative impact on IVF treatment outcome. It is not clear whether morbidly obese women (BMI >= 35 kg/m2) respond to treatment differently as compared to obese women (BMI = 30–34.9 kg/m2) in IVF. Our aim was to compare the outcome of IVF or ICSI treatments in obese patients to that in morbidly obese patients.  相似文献

Purpose

Many life cycle assessment (LCA) studies do not adequately address the actual lifetime of buildings and building products, but rather assume a typical value. The goal of this study was to determine the impact of lifetime on residential building LCA results. Including accurate lifetime data into LCA allows a better understanding of a product’s environmental impact that would ultimately enhance the accuracy of LCA results.  相似文献

Background

In perfused hearts, high calcium-induced inotropy results in less developed pressure relative to myocardial oxygen consumption compared to the β-adrenergic agonist dobutamine. Calcium handling is an important determinant of myocardial oxygen consumption. Therefore, we hypothesized that this phenomenon was due to reduced myofilament responsiveness to calcium, related to protein kinase C activation.  相似文献

Background, aim, and scope

Human use of land areas leads to impacts on nature in several ways. Within the framework of the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative, it was stated that life cycle assessment (LCA) of land use should assess at least the impact on biodiversity, the impact on biotic production, and the impact on the regulating functions of the natural environment. This study focuses on the climatic impact of land use as determined by the CO2 transfers between vegetation/soil and the atmosphere in the course of terrestrial release and re-storage of carbon.  相似文献
