The seasonal distributions of phytoplankton biovolume and chlorophylla content were monitored for 14 months in a deep oligotrophic, high mountain lake (Redó, Pyrenees). An allometric relationshipof chlorophyll with biovolume was found throughout the periodstudied, with a correlation coefficient of 0.66. However, therelationship changed with season and the taxonomic compositionof the phytoplankton. Both parameters showed a similar seasonalpattern, but differences in space and time were observed. Thechlorophyll maximum was recorded deeper and later than thatof phytoplankton biovolume. While the biovolume maximum wasrelated to an improvement in conditions for growth (nutrientinput during column mixing periods), and reflected an increasein biomass, the chlorophyll maximum was related to changes incell pigment content, and to spatial or successional trendsin species dominance. Flagellated chrysophytes predominatedat the chlorophyll maxima. Chlorophyll content per unit of phytoplanktonbiovolume fluctuated greatly throughout the year, dependingon light intensity, temperature and phytoplankton composition.Of the main groups of phytoplankton in the lake, the dinoflagellates, which dominated the summer epilimnion phytoplankton community, recorded the lowest pigment content per biovolume (which isconsistent with their size). Higher chlorophyll contents perbiovolume were found in the deep hypolimnion and during thewinter cover period associated with small cells such as somespecies of chlorococcales chlorophytes. When flagellated chrysophyteswere predominant, a broad range of chlorophyll values per biovolumewas found and there was no significant correlation between thetwo biomass indices. These findings reaffirm the need to treatphytoplankton biomass estimates with caution, in particularwhen conducting primary production studies. While our resultsshow that changes in chlorophyll content per cell occur as aphotoacclimation response along a vertical profile, they alsopoint out a component of the successional trends which appearin a phytoplankton growth phase in a lake.  相似文献

We studied the response of phytoplankton to grazing by Daphnia galeata in the hypertrophic Bautzen reservoir (Dresden, Germany) from January 1995 to May 1996 during a long-term whole-lake biomanipulation experiment. The correlation between clearance rate of D. galeata and total phytoplankton biomass was negative only if biomass of Microcystis aeruginosa was excluded. This suggests that M. aeruginosa is the main grazing resistant phytoplankton species in the Bautzen reservoir. Except for M. aeruginosa and grazing-resistant Staurastrum quadridentatum spec. nov. (Scharf, 1995) no other phytoplankton species was able to reach a biovolume above 1 mm3 L-1 when the clearance rate of Daphnia exceeded 0.1 L L-1 d-1. There was significant positive correlation between mean cell or colony size of phytoplankters and clearance rate of D. galeata, showing an advantage of bigger cells or colonies at high grazing pressure. Cross-correlation indicated a time lag of about one month between changes in grazing pressure and a change in phytoplankton mean size. The phytoplankton species were divided into edible and inedible fractions, depending on their width and length. No edible species were able to reach high biovolumes during high biomasses of D. galeata but a positive correlation was found between the edible fraction of phytoplankton biovolume and the clearance rate of D. galeata. However, this relationship disappeared when the ‘ingestible edible’ fraction of M. aeruginosa was excluded, suggesting a rejection of ‘edible’ Microcystis colonies by D. galeata. A negative correlation was found between the inedible fraction of phytoplankton biovolume without M. aeruginosa and the clearance rate of D. galeata which might be due to superior competition of M. aeruginosa. We could clearly show that biomanipulation might not work well with respect to the reduction of total phytoplankton biomass under hypertrophic conditions and finally discuss a theoretical threshold of phosphorus (probably around 80 μg L-1), below which biomanipulation should become effective. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the phytoplankton community of a small tropical reservoir were monitored over a four year period comprising of an initial two seasonal cycles during which the water column stratified strongly for extended periods each year, and two further seasonal cycles after installation of a mechanical aeration system to induce artificial destratification. In the unmanaged reservoir, the concentration of chlorophyll a at 0.5 m reached maximum values (on one occasion > 90 mg m−3) when the water column was stratified and the epilimnion was very shallow (ca 2 m depth). The hypolimnion at this time was anoxic (less than 2% oxygen saturation) and had a high concentration of bacteriochlorophyll (100–200 mg m−3). The phytoplankton community of the unmanaged reservoir was generally dominated by cyanobacteria (Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Anabaena tenericaulis) during the warmer months of the year (November–March) (but replaced by chlorophyta, dinophyceae and euglenophyceae after periods of intense rain) and by bacillariophyceae (Synedra ulna var. chaseana, S. tenera) during the cooler, dry months. In the artificially destratified reservoir (8 h aeration day−1), the phytoplankton community was largely dominated by diatoms except after depletion of the silica content of the water column which caused diatoms to be replaced by cyanobacteria (dominated by A. tenericaulis) and a range of chlorophytes. The changing pattern of stratification and circulation of the water column in the unmanaged reservoir caused repeated disruption of the established phytoplankton assemblage with peaks of high biomass associated with transient cyanobacterial blooms. Continuous aeration and the consequent increase in the ratio mixed: euphotic depth provided conditions suitable for dominance of the phytoplankton by diatoms, as long as silica was available, and resulted in average chlorophyll levels higher than in the unmanaged reservoir (120 ± 10 v. 64 ± 9 mg m−2). Hierarchical fusion analysis based on the biomass of species differentiated the phytoplankton samples into cluster groups that could be related primarily to stratification or mixing of the water column.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to compare the composition and seasonality of the phytoplankton population in a natural oligotrophic lake (Lake Sanabria) and a mesotrophic reservoir (Valparaíso). Both ecosystems are located on the Tera river course (NW Spain), which runs along an area of ancient metamorphic and plutonic rocks. Some physical and chemical parameters, chlorophyll a and phytoplankton biovolume were studied from monthly samples collected at different depths during the periods 1987–1989 (Lake Sanabria) and 1991–1992 (Valparaíso). Phytoplankton biovolume and chlorophyll a concentration were about five times higher in Valparaíso than in Lake Sanabria. Species composition (and main phytoplankton groups) were different. Valparaíso was highly dominated by diatoms and Lake Sanabria by cryptophytes and small chlorophytes. In spite of the fact that both sites were nitrogen limited, heterocystous cyanophytes (Anabaena sp.) were detected only in Valparaíso. The relationships between phytoplankton structure and trophic level, hydrological conditions and nitrate content are discussed.  相似文献

The present study was carried out in Faxinal Reservoir, a warm monomictic, meso-eutrophic reservoir in subtropical southern Brazil, with a long-standing, well-stratified condition, low epilimnetic nutrient concentrations, and a relatively clear epilimnion. In this study, we analyzed the dynamics of the phytoplankton functional groups, recognizing their driving forces in Faxinal Reservoir. Samples were taken at monthly intervals from January 2004 to January 2005 in surface waters. According to the reservoir’s mixing regime, three periods were identified during the study: stratification 1 (January–May 2004); mixing period (June–August 2004); and stratification 2 (September 2004–January 2005). The nutrient dynamics were driven by the mixing regime. The H1, F, and C phytoplankton functional groups were the most important in biomass, mainly represented by the N-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena crassa, the colonial green alga with thick mucilaginous sheaths Nephrocytium sp., and the diatom Asterionella formosa, respectively. Tendencies pointed out by redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that the mixing regime was the main determining factor of the seasonal dynamics of the phytoplankton community. The dominant functional groups showed a close relationship with the relative water-column stability (RWCS), and also, as a consequence of the mixing regime, with nutrient availability. The study also revealed the important role of physical processes in the seasonal gradient, in selecting for phytoplankton functional groups and, consequently, in the assessment of ecological status. Q index (assemblage index) of water quality based on functional groups revealed ecological status varying from very poor to tolerable in the stratification 1 period and from tolerable to medium in the mixing and stratification 2 periods. We assessed if the qualitative and quantitative aspects of plankton composition in reservoirs of the middle Missouri River were influenced by hydrologic variability. Phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in six reservoirs of this highly regulated system were sampled between 2004 and 2011 during historic drought, subsequent recovery, and a 100-year flood event. The reservoir system encompasses a broad latitudinal gradient of decreasing depth, decreasing water residence time and increasing trophic state. Phytoplankton communities of the upper three reservoirs were co-dominated by planktonic and meroplanktonic diatoms during the drought, recovery, and flood periods, but the proportion of more silicified meroplanktonic diatoms increased in the lower three reservoirs as water residence time decreased. Peak phytoplankton biovolume usually occurred during spring/early summer and was associated with increased hydrologic inflows and outflows. Zooplankton biomass of the reservoir system was dominated by Daphnia spp., but all zooplankton groups decreased as inflows and outflows accelerated during the recovery and flood periods. Rotifer abundances were higher under turbulent conditions associated with dam operations. Canonical correlation analyses suggested that temperature, water residence time, station depth, and water clarity explained more variance in the structures of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities than bioavailable nutrient parameters.  相似文献

The factors influencing the seasonal dynamics of Daphnia in a thermally stratified lake (Esthwaite Water) are described and related to long-term changes in the weather. The Daphnia produced three cohorts in the year and the strength of the cohorts was determined by year-to-year variations in the physical characteristics of the lake and the abundance of edible algae. Food was most abundant in early summer when small, fast-growing flagellates were particularly common. In late summer, the phytoplankton community was dominated by large, inedible species but edible forms re-appeared when nutrients were entrained by wind mixing. Examples are presented to demonstrate the effect that year-to-year variations in the weather have on the growth of the phytoplankton and the dynamics of the Daphnia. In ‘good’ years, when the lake stratifies early and there are periods of episodic mixing in summer, there are two ‘pulses’ of edible algae and two strong cohorts of Daphnia. In ‘bad’ years when stratification is delayed and there is little episodic mixing, the growth of the edible algae is suppressed and the Daphnia produce two weak cohorts. The results are discussed in relation to the impact of intermediate disturbances on growth of phytoplankton and current theories of population regulation in Daphnia. The evidence suggests that the dynamics of the Daphnia in the lake are strongly influenced by seasonal variations in the mixing regime, the recycling of nutrients and the episodic growth of edible algae.  相似文献

In situ measurement of the growth rates of planktonic populationscan be improved by using dialysis chambers (‘cage cultures’)to avoid shifts in the chemical environment during incubation.Vertical mixing and small-scale turbulence affect the growthof planktonic populations, there fore natural mixing conditionsshould be simulated as closely as possible during the incubation.A new device is described here which combines the advantagesof a dialysis chamber with a programmable vertical mixing regime.Realistic phytoplankton growth rates can thus be measured insitu under con ditions of vertical mixing and small-scale turbulence. The chamber made of transparent, UV-transmitting acrylic glasswas fitted at both ends with permeable polycarbonate membranes. It was moved vertically through the water column by a pocket-sizedlift and rotated simultaneously on its central axis. The methodwas applied to two typos of experiments on growth and lossesof phytoplankton in the River Severn, UK. The first one comparedchanges in biovolume of phytoplankton in a water parcel flowingdownstream (6% h–1 decline) with those in a simultaneouslyincubated dialysis chamber moved between water surface and riverbottom (7% h–1 increase). The difference equates to algallosses prevented in the chamber but suffered along the river(mainly sedimentation and grazing of benthic filter feeders).Loss rate of diatoms was three times higher than those of chlorophytes. In another experiment growth of phytoplankton from the mainstream and lateral dead zone was compared under different mixingconditions. Algae from the main stream grew faster than fromthe dead zone. Only cryptophytes preferred calm conditions, all the other algal groups grew faster in chambers moved throughthe water column than in stationary ones. Further possible applicationsin both standing and flowing waters are discussed.  相似文献

The response of phytoplankton biomass, growth rates and primaryproduction to seasonally varying physical forcing was studiedat a station southeast of Bermuda over an 18 month period. Phytoplanktongrowth rates and primary production were measured using thepigment-labeling method, and phytoplankton biomass was calculatedfrom these measurements. Phytoplankton carbon biomass variedsystematically over the year. Highest values were observed duringthe winter and spring. Seasonal variations of chlorophyll (Chi)a in the surface layer could primarily be attributed to variationsin phytoplankton biomass and secondarily to photoacclimation.During the summer period, average values of carbon (C)/Chl ratios(g C g–1 Chi) ranged from 160 at the surface to 33 atthe 1.6% light level, changes attributed to photoacclimationof the phytoplankton, consistent with the observation that phytoplanktonbiomass did not vary as a function of depth. Phytoplankton growthrates in the surface layer did not vary systematically overthe year, ranging from 0.15 to 0.45 day–1, in spite ofseasonally varying concentrations of nitrate. Growth rates variedas a function of depth from average values of 0.3 day–1in the surface layer to <0.1 day1 at the 1.6% light level. Thus, the primary response of the phytoplankton community tonutrient enrichment during the winter period was an increasein phytoplankton biomass rather than an increase in growth rates.A simple nutrient-phyto-plankton-zooplankton model was usedto explore this phenomenon. The model demonstrated that theobserved response of the phytoplankton to nutrient enrichmentis only possible when phytoplankton growth is not severely limitedby nutrients.  相似文献

Data collected in a limnological survey, carried out between 1987 and 1988 on 21 Sicilian reservoirs of varying trophic state, were ordinated using CANOCO 3.1 to generalise the way in which the structure of phytoplankton assemblage is conditioned by both physical and chemical variables. The results showed that in these man-made lakes, characterised by conspicuous water-level fluctuations, the annual and interannual variability in the abundance and composition of phytoplankton may be strongly influenced by their peculiar hydraulic regimes rather than by nutrient availability. In particular, it was highlighted that, from the early summer, water abstraction often leads to increased circulation and to the deepening of the mixed layer. In this way, an increase of the ratio of mixing depth to euphotic depth is forced, with the result that phytoplankton cells experience longer periods in darkness as they are carried through the mixed layer. Phytoplankton assemblages change in species composition in response to the environmental variation. Both the raising of the trophic state, with an increase in phytoplankton biomass and a decrease in transparency, and the intensified abstraction enhance the role of light availability in promoting the development of specific phytoplankton assemblages adapted to the modified physical environment. Light climate is an important influence on the species structure of the phytoplankton, especially in the higher part of the trophic gradient. In contrast, the influence of nutrients on the structure of the assemblages appears to be higher in the lower part of the trophic spectrum or in those environments characterised by a higher hydrological stability during the year.  相似文献

The effects of a decreased sewage release from a cellulose mill on the hypertrophic Bleiloch reservoir were studied. The waste water treatment reduced the concentration of yellow substances in the reservoir and resulted in a more light-coloured waterbody. It is estimated that the changes in the light attenuation in the Bleiloch reservoir after 1989 can be described as eutrophication. Selected physical, chemical, and biological parameters from 1994 show the effect of changes. Three large pelagic enclosures (diameter 10 m, length 20 m) were installed in the reservoir to assess effects of artifical mixing on phytoplankton biomass and composition. Two circulation techniques have been used in the enclosures (relase of compressed air at the bottom of the enclosure and mechanical mixing, where water was pumped from the surface downward). The investigation demonstrate that the magnitude of seasonal peaks of chlorophyll were depressed in the mixed enclosures during circulation. The results were discussed in comparison with a reference enclosure without mixing and the waterbody of the reservoir. Cryptophytes and other flagellates achieved dominance during mixing in the “air”-enclosure, while diatoms were the most abundant species in the „pump”︁-enclosure. The development of filamentous cyanobacteria, which are significant indicators of eutrophication, was disturbed in the enclosures. They were outcompeted by cryptophytes, movable chlorophytes and diatoms. Both mechanical pump and compressed air can be used to control excessive algal growth. Further studies on the dynamics of phytoplankton to artifical mixing are suggested. The results of further studies should design an in situ experiment in the reservoir to reduce algal growth by light limitation. Further on a dense duckweed cover spreads over the surface of the Bleiloch reservoir, which influences the light regime in the waterbody. Therefore factors influencing the duckweed growth were analysed. Special attention was focused on the influence of the pH, consequences of the mixing in the waterbody and the role of resting stages.  相似文献

The phytoplankton community of river–floodplain ecosystems shows significant temporal fluctuations in response to hydrosedimentological regime. The aim of our study was analyze the effect of the hydrosedimentological regime of the Paraná and Ivinhema Rivers on the interannual variation in the composition, biovolume and functional groups of phytoplankton in an isolated floodplain lake (Ventura Lagoon) of the Ivinhema River State Park, located in the Upper Paraná River floodplain (Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil). Samples of phytoplankton were taken at the sub-surface of the pelagic zone of the lake from February 2000 to December 2005. A total of 132 taxa were recorded, and the species that represented greater contributions to the phytoplankton biovolume were grouped into five functional groups (FG) (H1, H2, M, MP and Y). The distribution of the FGs were linked to the high and low water periods in Ventura lagoon. Functional groups MP and Y were the highest contributors to the phytoplankton biovolume during the high water periods, whereas FGs H1, H2 and M contributed more during the low water periods. The FGs were also useful for the interannual characterization of Ventura Lagoon by taking the changes caused by climatological factors into account. There was a strong dominance of Cyanobacteria (H2 and M) in 2000 and 2001 (La Niña periods) coincident with low precipitation and low hydrometric levels of the Paraná and Ivinhema Rivers and, consequently, lower water depths of Ventura Lagoon. In 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 (El Niño periods), when higher precipitation, higher hydrometric levels, higher discharge of the Paraná and Ivinhema Rivers and an increased depth of Ventura Lagoon were observed, Cyanobacteria (H1, H2 and M) were dominant, followed by Bacillariophyceae (MP) and Cryptophyceae (Y). These results reported here corroborate the utility of using FGs as indicators of interannual and seasonal variability in floodplain lakes.  相似文献

1. The major aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that nutrient enrichment and the introduction of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), an exotic omnivorous filter‐feeding fish, operate interdependently to regulate plankton communities and water transparency of a tropical reservoir in the semi‐arid northeastern Brazil. 2. A field experiment was performed for 5 weeks in 20 enclosures (9.8 m3) to which four treatments were randomly allocated: tilapia addition (F), nutrient addition (N), tilapia and nutrient addition (F + N) and a control treatment with no tilapia or nutrient addition (C). A two‐way repeated measures anova was undertaken to test for time, tilapia and nutrient effects and their interactions on water transparency, total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations, phytoplankton biovolume and zooplankton biomass. 3. Nutrient addition had no effect except on rotifer biomass, but there were significant fish effects on the biomass of total zooplankton, copepod nauplii, rotifers, cladocerans and calanoid copepods and on the biovolume of total phytoplankton, large algae (GALD ≥ 50 μm), Bacillariophyta and Zygnemaphyceae and on Secchi depth. In addition, we found significant interaction effects between tilapia and nutrients on Secchi depth and rotifers. Overall, tilapia decreased the biomass of most zooplankton taxa and large algae (diatoms) and decreased water transparency, while nutrient enrichment increased the biomass of rotifers, but only in the absence of tilapia. 4. In conclusion, the influence of fish on the reservoir plankton community and water transparency was significant and even greater than that of nutrient loading. This suggests that biomanipulation of filter‐feeding tilapias may be of importance for water quality management of eutrophic reservoirs in tropical semi‐arid regions.  相似文献

The implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires the development of ecologically-based classification systems for anthropogenically-induced eutrophication in all types of water bodies. Due to the inherent high temporal and spatial variability of hydrological and geochemical parameters of the coastal waters of the southern Baltic Sea, discrimination between anthropogenic impact and natural variability is necessary. The development of statistical methods for this discrimination was the main aim of this study. These methods were used to derive indicative phytoplankton parameters for different stages of eutrophication for the investigation area. For this purpose, a long-term phytoplankton data series was analysed, which covered a broad salinity and eutrophication gradient. In order to detect eutrophication effects, the analysis was restricted to phytoplankton spring bloom events and to the salinity range between 5 and 10 psu, i.e. superimposing seasonal and hydrodynamic effects were eliminated. An artificial abiotic degradation vector was developed based on four typical water quality parameters. A total of 11 potentially indicative phytoplankton parameters on different taxonomical levels arose from a correlation analysis with this degradation vector. These indicators were then tested for their ability to discriminate between three eutrophication levels. Finally, seven phytoplankton indices could be proposed: total phytoplankton biovolume, the percentage of diatoms and the biovolume of different size ranges of diatoms and one indicative species (Woronichinia compacta). Consideration of nitrogen fixation adds a positive nonlinear feedback to plankton ecosystem models. We investigate the consequences of this feedback for secondary phytoplankton blooms and the response of phytoplankton dynamics to physical forcing. The dynamics of phytoplankton, Trichodesmium (the nitrogen fixer), and nutrients is modeled with a system of three differential equations. The model includes two types of nonlinear interactions: the competition of phytoplankton and Trichodesmium for light, and the positive feedback resulting from Trichodesmium recycling. A typical simulation of the model in time, with forcing by a varying mixed-layer depth, reveals a clear successional sequence including a secondary or ‘echo’ bloom of the phytoplankton. We explain this sequence of events through the stability analysis of three different steady states of the model. Our analysis shows the existence of a critical biological parameter, the ratio of normalized growth rates, determining the occurrence of ‘echo’ blooms and the specific sequence of events following a physical perturbation. The interplay of positive and negative feedbacks appears essential to the timing and the type of events following such a perturbation.  相似文献

Summary A study has been made of the productivity and periodicity of phytoplankton of the Indrasagar tank, Udaipur, in relation to physicochemical characteristics. Variations in the physical and chemical characteristics of water over a period of one year are described. The Tank is of eutrophic type. Green algae dominated the phytoplankton both as regards number of species and number of individuals.A definite phytoplankton periodicity has been observed, the green algae dominating in the rainy and winter seasons and the blue-greens during summer.A correlation of the phytoplankton productivity and physicochemical characteristics of Indrasagar tank indicates that the Chlorophyceae have a wide range of adaptability; the growth of diatoms is promoted by silica, nitrates and phosphates; and the growth of blue-green algae is controlled by pH and temperature.  相似文献

We analysed data from three Bulgarian reservoirs, with trophic status from meso to eutrophic. Two kinds of relations (non-allometric and allometric) of chlorophyll with phytoplankton density, biovolume and surface area were investigated. The non-allometric relationships compare these phytoplankton variables with chlorophyll-a concentration, while the allometric ones include comparisons of average individual volume (AIV) of phytoplankters with chlorophyll-a content per individual (Chl.N–1), per unit biovolume (Chl.BV–1) and per unit surface area (Chl.SA–1).Maximum values of the rank correlation of the three non-allometric relationships were found in the eutrophic reservoir. The highest allometric correlation coefficients were observed in the mesotrophic reservoir. Two non-allometric relationships, Chl with N and Chl ith BV calculated on unified data from all three reservoirs showed lower significance and a non-linear character. Chl-SA relationship was always statistically significant and varied from linear to slightly non-linear when calculated on weighed values. Two allometric relationships, AIV with Chl.BV–1 and AIV with Chl.N–1 seem to be linear. A third AIV and Chl.SA–1 was described by a polinomial of the second degree, indicating that the smallest and largest phytoplankton individuals have a similar chlorophyll content per unit surface area. At the highest trophy, the Chl.SA–1 seemed lowest. The frequently investigated relationship between chlorophyll-a and biovolume ranged from statistically not significant in the mesotrophic to highly significant in the eutrophic reservoir. This tendency was generalized by obtaining a statistically significant rank correlation between the levels of significance of chlorophyll-biovolume correlations and the corresponding chlorophyll-a concentrations. The non-linear character of the chlorophyll-biovolume relationship over a wide range of trophy was probably caused by changes in surface area-biovolume ratio.Deceased.  相似文献

1. Measurements of total phosphorus (TP) concentrations since 1975 and a 50‐year time series of phytoplankton biovolume and species composition from Lake Mondsee (Austria) were combined with palaeolimnological information on diatom composition and reconstructed TP‐levels to describe the response of phytoplankton communities to changing nutrient conditions. 2. Four phases were identified in the long‐term record. Phase I was the pre‐eutrophication period characterised by TP‐levels of about 6 μg L?1 and diatom dominance. Phase II began in 1966 with an increase in TP concentration followed by the invasion of Planktothrix rubescens in 1968, characterising mesotrophic conditions. Phase III, from 1976 to 1979, had the highest annual mean TP concentrations (up to 36 μg L?1) and phytoplankton biovolumes (3.57 mm3 L?1), although reductions in external nutrient loading started in 1974. Phases II and III saw an expansion of species characteristic of higher nutrient levels as reflected in the diatom stratigraphy. Oligotrophication (phase IV) began in 1980 when annual average TP concentration, Secchi depth and algal biovolume began to decline, accompanied by increasing concentrations of soluble reactive silica. 3. The period from 1981 to 1986 was characterised by asynchronous trends. Annual mean and maximum total phytoplankton biovolume initially continued to increase after TP concentration began to decline. Reductions in phytoplankton biovolume were delayed by about 5 years. Several phytoplankton species differed in the timing of their responses to changing nutrient conditions. For example, while P. rubescens declined concomitantly with the decline in TP concentration, other species indicative of higher phosphorus concentrations, such as Tabellaria flocculosa var. asterionelloides, tended to increase further. 4. These data therefore do not support the hypotheses that a reduction in TP concentration is accompanied by (i) an immediate decline in total phytoplankton biovolume and (ii) persistence of the species composition characterising the phytoplankton community before nutrient reduction.  相似文献
