Many benthic batoids utilize their pectoral fins for both undulatory locomotion and feeding. Certain derived, pelagic species of batoids possess cephalic lobes, which evolved from the anterior pectoral fins. These species utilize the pectoral fins for oscillatory locomotion while the cephalic lobes are used for feeding. The goal of this article was to compare the morphology of the cephalic lobes and anterior pectoral fins in species that possess and lack cephalic lobes. The skeletal elements (radials) of the cephalic lobes more closely resembled the radials in the pectoral fin of undulatory species. Second moment of area (I), calculated from cephalic lobe radial cross sections, and the number of joints revealed greater flexibility and resistance to bending in multiple directions as compared to pectoral fin radials of oscillatory species. The cephalic lobe musculature was more complex than the anterior pectoral fin musculature, with an additional muscle on the dorsal side, with fiber angles running obliquely to the radials. In Rhinoptera bonasus, a muscle presumably used to help elevate the cephalic lobes is described. Electrosensory pores were found on the cephalic lobes (except Mobula japonica) and anterior pectoral fins of undulatory swimmers, but absent from the anterior pectoral fins of oscillatory swimmers. Pore distributions were fairly uniform except in R. bonasus, which had higher pore numbers at the edges of the cephalic lobes. Overall, the cephalic lobes are unique in their anatomy but are more similar to the anterior pectoral fins of undulatory swimmers, having more flexibility and maneuverability compared to pectoral fins of oscillatory swimmers. The maneuverable cephalic lobes taking on the role of feeding may have allowed the switch to oscillatory locomotion and hence, a more pelagic lifestyle. J. Gerres chrysops, a new gerreid species from the Gulf of Thailand, is described on the basis of 29 specimens, 58–83 mm in standard length (SL). A small-sized species (less than 100 mm SL), it is characterized by a silvery-gold sheen on the head and trunk, vivid yellow or yellowish-hyaline fins in life, two supraneural bones (formula 0/0/2/) and dorsal fin rays usually IX, 10. The new species is similar toG. decacanthus (Bleeker, 1865) andG. setifer (Hamilton, 1822), which are redescribed. being similarly small valid gerreid species characterized by two supraneural bones. Together, the three species comprise “theGerres setifer complex.”Gerres chrysops differs from bothG. decacanthus andG. setifer in life and fresh colors, the body being silvery-gold with vivid yellow or yellowish dorsal, caudal, anal and pelvic fins, and yellowish-hyaline pectoral fins (vs. silver body with hyaline fins in the latter two species).Gerres setifer differs fromG. chrysops andG. decacanthus in having the last dorsal fin spine longer than the penultimate spine (vs. almost same length or shorter), usually ten dorsal fin spines and nine soft dorsal rays (vs. usually IX, 10), and 8 or 9 lower series gill rakers (vs. usually 7).Gerres decacanthus differs fromG. chrysops andG. setifer in having a shorter head, lesser body depth at the first anal fin spine base, lesser body width at the pectoral fin base, and shorter second dorsal and third anal fin spines. The new species is currently known only from Angsilla, near Bangsaen, and around Si Chang Island, northeastern Gulf of Thailand.Gerres decacanthus inhabits southern Chinese waters andG. setifer is currently known from the Bay of Bengal to the Andaman Sea.  相似文献

Synopsis Laboratory and field data suggest that several species of parasitic lampreys forage primarily at night, but data forPetromyzon marinus are equivocal. Nocturnal foraging may minimize predation risk. This may be particularly important to those species of lampreys that inhabit shallow streams. Nocturnal foraging also may enhance foraging efficiency if potential hosts at night are quiescent and more easily approached. Future experiments should be designed to avoid several potential sources of bias.  相似文献

Synopsis Fishes of the family Nototheniidae (Pisces: Perciformes) dominate antarctic fish communities and have radiated to fill diverse niches. The most southern species must operate under an extended austral night and under thick sea ice, yet have eyes more typical of shallow coastal fishes. In winter, the eyes are probably useless, except for detecting bioluminescence. I compared the responses of four species to hydromechanical and tactile signals: two benthivores,Trematomus bernacchii andT. pennellii, a benthic planktivore,T. nicolai, andPagothenia borchgrevinki, which feeds near the ice undersurface and within ice cracks. The planktivores have dorsal mouths, with eyes oriented dorsally or laterally (Pagothenia); their lateral line canals and receptor organs are larger dorsally. The benthivores have more ventrally oriented mouths and eyes. All species responded to hydromechanical cues to the head, but only the two benthivores responded to trunk hydromechanical stimuli or tactile stimuli to the ventral trunk or pelvic fins. Possibly responses to plankton along the trunk are of little use if a reorientation washes pelagic prey away. In responding to trunk stimuli,T. bernacchii reorients its head to the target in two stages by slowly pivoting on its pelvic fins. In contrast,T. pennellii reorients in a single quick flip. It is argued that, becauseT. bernacchii has wider canals thanT. pennellii, it must move more slowly to reduce self-generated noise. It is likely that further studies of winter diet and prey behavior may reveal the relative advantages of the two repositioning styles.  相似文献

A new ogcocephalid batfish,Coelophrys bradburyae, is described on the basis of a single specimen collected from the Pacific coast off Aomori, Japan, at a depth between 557–595 m. The species differs from others of the genus by having a small eye (7.1 in head length), short upper jaw (3.7 in head length), short pectoral and pelvic fins (length 3.0 and 9.6 in head length, respectively), small illicial cavity (width 5.3 in head length), and no bifurcated tubercles on the lateral surface of the body. A key to the species ofCoelophrys is given and the evolutionary relationships of the genus discussed based on cladistic analyses: the sister relationship withHalieutopsis was confirmed and possible paedomorphic states, including the globose body, proposed as having evolved secondarily from a flat-bodied ogcocephalid ancestor.  相似文献

Two species of the holocentrid fish genusMyripristis are described as new from Japan, both with a single pair of tooth patches outside the gape at tip of lower jaw, the third anal spine longer than the fourth, and 28–29 lateral-line scales:M. kochiensis from Kashiwa-jima, Kochi Prefecture, previously misidentified asM. murdjan, is distinct in having small scales in axil of pectoral fins, 32–36 gill rakers, interorbital space 4.45–5.1 in head, and lower jaw not strongly projecting when mouth closed;M. greenfieldi, from the Ryukyu Islands and Ogasawara Islands to Kochi Prefecture, previously misidentified asM. woodsi andM. randalli, is distinct in lacking scales in the pectoral axil, having 35–52 cteni on largest body scales, 43–47 gill rakers, and longest dorsal spine 2.0–2.25 in head.  相似文献

Cabillus atripelvicus is described from three specimens, 26.1–40.6 mm in standard length, collected from depth 17–29 m in the Ogasawara Islands. In addition, two small specimens taken by dredge in 50–55 m from Sagami Bay, Honshu, and one from Tachibana Bay, Kyushu, are identified as this species but not designated as paratypes. Cabillus atripelvicus is distinguished from the four other described species of the genus by its high count of 18–20 pectoral rays, presence of median predorsal scales, longer pectoral fins, and distinctive color pattern, including black pelvic fins. The range of C. lacertops Smith, 1959 is extended east to the Marshall Islands and that of C. tongarevae (Fowler, 1927) east to American Samoa. More species remain to be described in the genus. Rhodothermus marinus has been the subject of many studies in recent years. It is a thermohalophilic bacterium and is the only validly described species in the genus Rhodothermus. It is not closely related to other well-known thermophiles and is the only thermophile within the family Crenotrichaceae. R. marinus has been isolated from several similar but distantly located geothermal habitats, many of which are subject to large fluctuations in environmental conditions. This presumably affects the physiology of R. marinus. Many of its enzymes show optimum activity at temperatures considerably higher than 65°C, the optimum for growth, and some are active over a broad temperature range. Studies have found distinguishing components in the R. marinus electron transport chain as well as in its pool of intracellular solutes, which accumulate during osmotic stress. The species hosts both bacteriophages and plasmids and a functional intein has been isolated from its chromosome. Despite these interesting features and its unknown genetics, interest in R. marinus has been mostly stimulated by its thermostable enzymes, particularly polysaccharide hydrolysing enzymes and enzymes of DNA synthesis which may be useful in industry and in the laboratory. R. marinus has not been amenable to genetic analysis until recently when a system for gene transfer was established. Here, we review the current literature on R. marinus.  相似文献

Early life stages of Artedidraco skottsbergi and A. shackletoni were collected off Adélie Land. The morphology and pigmentation pattern of nine larvae and juveniles of A. skottsbergi between 17.2 and 21.4 mm in standard length (SL), and of two juveniles of A. shackletoni measuring 25.1 mm SL were described. A. skottsbergi was characterized by a heavily pigmented body, except for the caudal peduncle, with distinctively dense pigmentation on the ventrolateral half of the body and caudal section (17.2–17.9 mm SL). Furthermore, they had no pigmentation on the pectoral fin base until they attained 21.4 mm SL. Juvenile A. shackletoni had a heavily pigmented body except for the ventral side of the abdomen and the anal fin base. The proximal part of the dorsal fin and most of the anal fin were covered with melanophores. Although knowledge of larval and juvenile Artedidraco species is limited, the distribution of melanophores on the fins, pectoral fin base and caudal peduncle at each developmental stage may be useful for species identification.  相似文献

Sternostoma tracheacolum was found to be ovoviviparous, laying eggs in the lung of the host. Larvae hatch shortly after oviposition and moult without feeding. Following a blood meal female protonymphs move to the posterior airsacs while male protonymphs tend to stay within the lung to complete development. Gravid females tend to occupy the airsacs, the syrinx and trachea of the host while adult non-gravid, non-gorged females are more commonly found in the upper respiratory system, particularly the buccal and nasal cavities. In vitro rearing experiments and other observations indicate that the life cycle (from egg to adult) is completed in less than 6 days. Transmission is accomplished by the adult non-gravid, non-gorged female and this stage is often encountered on the head plumage, bill and nares of infected birds. Observations on the behaviour and survival of the transmissible indicate a potential for direct transmission between hosts in close proximity and indirect transmission via water, perches or other surfaces. Adult male mites tend to be common in small infrapopulations but uncommon and often absent in large infrapopulations, supporting an argument for parthenogenesis and an arrhenotokous system of sex determination.  相似文献

A new marine goby Callogobius sheni collected from coral reefs off southern Taiwan is described. The new species can be distinguished from congeneric species by the following combination of features: dorsal fin rays VI-I, 9; anal fin rays I, 7; pectoral fin rays 18; longitudinal scale rows 27–28; predorsal scale rows 9–10; no posterior oculoscapular and preopercular canals; body pale white with five blackish brown cross bands; caudal and pectoral fins each with a large blackish brown blotch.  相似文献

A new species of spinous loach, Cobitis shikokuensis, is described based on 297 specimens from Shikoku Island, Japan. The new species was formerly known as the Shikoku group of Cobitis takatsuensis. It can be distinguished from other species of Cobitis and closely related genera by a combination of the following characters: dorsal fin with 6 branched soft rays; anal fin with 5 branched soft rays; one brownish streak across eye from the tip of nose, no streak on cheek; a black spot smaller than eye diameter near the dorsal corner of the caudal fin base; 3–5 small brownish speckles on ventral side of caudal peduncle; high caudal peduncle with well-developed fleshy keels on dorsal and ventral side; a lamina circularis at base of dorsal part of pectoral fin absent; first branched soft ray of pectoral fin broad in males; pectoral soft rays widely branched from the approximate midpoint; last anal fin ray with 2 elements; interorbital width 11.2–17.1% of head length.  相似文献

The bembrid genusBembras Cuvier is reviewed. Five species,B. japonica Cuvier,B. adenensis Imamura & Knapp and three undescribed species, were assigned to the genus. Type species of the genus,Bembras japonica is redescribed on the basis of 36 specimens including the holotype, and three new species,B. macrolepis, B. longipinnis andB. megacephala, previously misidentified asB. japonicus, are also described on the basis of specimens collected from Australia and Indonesia.Bembras macrolepis differs from its congeners by having large body scales, a long pectoral fin with 17–19 rays and a dark blotch on slightly upper portion to middle of margin, 14–15 anal-fin rays, small head and orbit, and caudal fin with a broad vertical dark band near posterior margin.Bembras longipinnis is distinguished from other members of the genus by having a slightly long pectoral fin with 17–19 rays and lacking a small black blotch near tip of upper rays, caudal fin with a large dark spot most intense in lower lobe, 1–2 gill rakers on upper gill arch, 13–14 anal-fin rays, slightly elong ated head and small orbit.Bembras megacephala is characterized by the following combination of characters: caudal fin with several irregular narrow vertical dark bands, small orbit, pectoral fin with 19–20 rays and lacking a small black blotch near tip of upper rays, head elongate, 2–4 gill rakers on upper gill arch, 15 anal-fin rays and small body scales. Species of Helicteres are pollinated mainly by hummingbirds and bats. Most species pollinated by hummingbirds have a mechanism of depositing pollen on the top of the pollinator's head such as is shown in this work for Helicteres sacarolha. H. brevispira has an unusual mechanism of depositing pollen grains under the tail or on the abdomen of the hummingbirds. The top of the birds’ head may be considered an efficient place to transport pollen grains, because it is plain, easily accessible for deposition and donation of pollen and not easily accessible for grooming, while the tail is movable and inclined. Thus, H. brevispira pollinators may carry or transfer fewer amounts of pollen grains than H. sacarolha pollinators from one flower to another. If a large amount of pollen grains is lost, a higher quantity of flower or pollen has to be produced to guarantee reproductive success. Plants of H. brevispira set higher number of flowers and pollen grains per flower than H. sacarolha and have also higher rates of fruit and flower abortion. Thus, pollination efficiency of H. brevispira may be reached by high pollen and flower production. Flower change mechanism presented in this species may be also involved with the optimization of pollinator feeding and pollination efficiency.  相似文献

The responses of hagfish (Myxine glutinosa) and lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis and Petromyzon marinus) erythrocytes to osmotic swelling in hypoosmotic medium and to acid-base disturbances induced by ammonium chloride prepulse were studied. The erythrocytes of hagfish regulated neither cell volume after osmotic swelling nor intracellular pH after acidification. In contrast, the erythrocytes of lamprey lost potassium and chloride after osmotic swelling, whereby their volume recovered. A new rajid species,Raja koreana, is described from a single adult female specimen, 735 mm in total length, collected off the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula. AlthoughR. koreana is included in the group of species characterized by the scapulocoracoid lacking an anterior bridge and having the postventral fenestra expanded, it is unique among the latter in possessing: pectoral girdle propterygium not extending to snout tip; rostral shaft of neurocranium narrow and thick, unsegmented base with filamentous cartilage; snout fleshy; pores of ampullae of Lorenzini densely distributed over much of ventral surface to behind cloaca; most thorns on tail directed anteriorly; tail short; a pair of longitudinally elongated black blotches on middle of dorsal surface of disc when fresh; a pair of black blotches (grayish at center) posteriorly on pectoral fins; ventral surface of dise uniformly blackish-brown, except for areas around pores.  相似文献

Twenty three species in 11 genera were examined in the field to determine hosts. OnlyStriga asiatica andSeymeria cassioides have a narrow host range being restricted to grasses and pines, respectively. Paired fins and associated internal structures of the epauletic sharkHemiscyllium ocellatum, were described on the basis of three specimens. A comparison with other genera showed the epaulette shark to be, characterized by two elongated basal cartilages articulating with a distally projecting articular condyle on the coracoid, a loosely separated radial series with an intermediate series, a levator pectoralis inferior muscle and an anterolaterally developed depressor pectoralis muscle in the pectoral fin, and an elongated anterior pelvic basal cartilage articulating with a distally projecting articular condyle and an anterolaterally developed depressor pelvicus muscle in the pelvic fin. In captivity, the sharks exhibited both upright and crawling behavior on the bottom by using the pectoral and pelvic fins and bending the body. The distinctive morphological characters are shared by otherHemiscyllium species and are suggested as important factors enabling their unique behavior associated with a complex coral reef habitat.  相似文献

Summary The metabolic and structural differentiation of locomotory muscles of Notothenia rossii has been investigated. In this species sustained locomotion is achieved by sculling with enlarged pectoral fins (labriform locomotion), whilst the segmental myotomal muscle is reserved for burst activity. Red, white and subepidermal fibres can be distinguished in the trunk by histochemical and ultrastructural criteria. The main pectoral muscle (m. adductor profundus) consists entirely of red fibres. These three main fibres types show differences in histochemical staining profiles, capillarization, myofibril shape and packing, and lipid and mitochondrial content. The fractional volume of mitochondria amounts to 38% for pectoral, 30% for red myotomal and 1.9% for white myotomal fibres. Enzyme activities of red pectoral muscle are consistent with a higher potential for aerobic glucose and fatty acid oxidation than for the red myotomal fibres. Mg2+ Ca2+ -myofibrillar ATPase activities are similar for red pectoral and myotomal muscles and approximately half of those white fibres. Specialisations of N. rossii muscles associated with labriform swimming and locomotion at Antarctic temperatures are discussed.  相似文献

The feeding performance of two morphs of a trophically polymorphic fish, the arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, feeding on zooplankton, was studied in the laboratory. Limnetic morphs, with a fusiform body, terminal mouth, short pectoral fins, and relatively long and dense gill rakers, fed at significantly higher rates on Daphnia and Cyclops than did benthic morphs. The benthic morphs were characterized by a chunky body form, subterminal mouth, long pectoral fins, and relatively short and spaced-out gill rakers. The limnetic morphs attacked the prey at significantly higher rates and were more successful in capture. Benthic morphs were more reluctant to start feeding on zooplankton and reaction time was longer than in limnetic morphs. In the absence as well as presence of zooplankton food, the position of the two morphs in the aquaria differed markedly. The results agree with dietary differences found in field-collected fish. The limnetic morphs consume zooplankton, whereas benthic morphs specialize on Lymnaea gastropods. The results suggest that benthic morphs are phenotypically inferior at using the pelagic food niche. This implies that the current role of competitive or predatory interactions in segregating the morphs may be minor.  相似文献
