Competition for fertilisation in hermaphroditic animals seems to have led to many odd behaviours and complex morphologies involved in the transfer of accessory-gland products to the partner. Terrestrial slugs of the genus Deroceras show remarkably elaborate and interspecifically diverse penis morphologies and mating behaviours. Most species have an appending penial gland, which in Deroceras panormitanum consists of a few long fingers that are everted after sperm exchange and laid onto the partner’s back. To investigate whether this gland transfers a secretion onto the partner’s skin, we killed slugs at different mating stages and studied their penial glands and skin histologically. Two types of secretion granules appeared at a very early stage of courtship, and the penial gland was already filled 15 min into the courtship. At copulation, the gland everted this secretion onto the partner’s body, where it remained for at least 50 min. No lysis of skin tissue or other effects on the skin were observed. The slugs tried to lick the received secretion off their own body, and some droplets were observed to be shed with the body mucus. Our results indicate the external application of a glandular substance that could function as either a pheromone or allohormone. The behaviours of the recipients suggest sexual conflict, although mutual interest cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Secretion of the pregnancy-blocking pheromone was stimulated by injection of depo-testosterone cypionate into females and males of inbred strains of mice which do not normally secrete the pheromone. Testosterone treatment of SJL males altered pheromone secretion so that pregnancies were blocked when the stud male was of the same inbred strain; an event that does not normally occur. Injection of epiandrosterone, androstenedione, androsterone or testosterone significantly increased pheromone secretion in SJL females, but progesterone and dehydroepiandrosterone were ineffective. Kidney weights were significantly increased by administration of androgen metabolites and the possibility of the kidney being the site of pheromone synthesis is discussed. The preputial gland can be excluded as the site of pheromone synthesis since males which are hemizygous for the Tabby-J gene and have no preputial glands blocked pregnancies as effectively as their normal littermates. Preliminary results are also presented concerning the isolation of the pregnancy-blocking pheromone from urine. Urine was analysed by gas chromatography and a peak was observed whose concentration could be correlated with secretion of the pheromone, although the compound(s) has not been identified or tested for biological activity.  相似文献

Human eccrine sweat-gland recruitment and secretion rates were investigated from the glabrous (volar) and non-glabrous hand surfaces during psychogenic (mental arithmetic) and thermogenic stimuli (mild hyperthermia). It was hypothesised that these treatments would activate glands from both skin surfaces, with the non-thermal stimulus increasing secretion rates primarily by recruiting more sweat glands. Ten healthy men participated in two seated, resting trials in temperate conditions (25–26 °C). Trials commenced under normothermic conditions during which the first psychogenic stress was applied. That was followed by passive heating (0.5 °C mean body temperature elevation) and thermal clamping, with a second cognitive challenge then applied. Sudomotor activity was evaluated from both hands, with colourimetry used to identify activated sweat glands, skin conductance to determine the onset of precursor sweating and ventilated sweat capsules to measure rates of discharged sweating. From glandular activation and sweat rate data, sweat-gland outputs were derived. These psychogenic and thermogenic stimuli activated sweat glands from both the glabrous and non-glabrous skin surfaces, with the former dominating at the glabrous skin and the latter at the non-glabrous surface. Indeed, those stimuli individually accounted for ~90% of the site-specific maximal number of activated sweat glands observed when both stimuli were simultaneously applied. During the normothermic psychological stimulation, sweating from the glabrous surface was elevated via a 185% increase in the number of activated glands within the first 60 s. The hypothetical mechanism for this response may involve the serial activation of additional eccrine sweat glands during the progressive evolution of psychogenic sweating.  相似文献

Vertebrates communicate their sex to conspecifics through the use of sexually dimorphic signals, such as ornaments, behaviors and scents. Furthermore, the physiological connection between hormones and secondary sexual signal expression is key to understanding their dimorphism, seasonality and evolution. The red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) is the only reptile for which a described pheromone currently exists, and because garter snakes rely completely on the sexual attractiveness pheromone for species identification and mate choice, they constitute a unique model species for exploring the relationship between pheromones and the endocrine system. We recently demonstrated that estrogen can activate female pheromone production in male garter snakes. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanism(s) acting to prevent female pheromone production in males. We found that castrated males (GX) are courted by wild males in the field and produce appreciable amounts of female sex pheromone. Furthermore, pheromone production is inhibited in castrates given testosterone implants (GX + T), suggesting that pheromone production is actively inhibited by the presence of testosterone. Lastly, testosterone supplementation alone (T) increased the production of several saturated methyl ketones in the pheromone but not the unsaturated ketones; this may indicate that saturated ketones are testosterone-activated components of the garter snake's skin lipid milieu. Collectively, our research has shown that pheromone expression in snakes results from two processes: activation by the feminizing steroid estradiol and inhibition by testosterone. We suggest that basal birds and garter snakes share common pathways of activation that modulate crucial intraspecific signals that originate from skin.  相似文献

Males of the cerambycid beetle Neoclytus acuminatus acuminatus (F.) assume a body posture, never displayed by females, that appears to be associated with release of an aggregation pheromone: they periodically stop walking and fully extend their front legs, elevating their head and thorax above the substrate. In this article, we demonstrate that this body posture, the “pushup stance,” coincides with release of pheromone and that it serves to elevate pheromone glands above the substrate. We also use a pheromone proxy system (sublimation of naphthalene) to demonstrate that the pushup stance increases rates of pheromone dissemination. The pushup stance provides a convenient indictor for studying the role of pheromones in reproductive behavior and facilitating collection of pheromone in the laboratory.  相似文献

Pheromones mediate social interactions among individuals in a wide variety of species, from yeast to mammals. In social insects such as honey bees, pheromone communication systems can be extraordinarily complex and serve to coordinate behaviors among many individuals. One of the primary mediators of social behavior and organization in honey bee colonies is queen pheromone, which is produced by multiple glands. The types and quantities of chemicals produced differ significantly between virgin and mated queens, and recent studies have suggested that, in newly mated queens, insemination volume or quantity can affect pheromone production. Here, we examine the long-term impact of different factors involved during queen insemination on the chemical composition of the mandibular and Dufour''s glands, two of the major sources of queen pheromone. Our results demonstrate that carbon dioxide (an anesthetic used in instrumental insemination), physical manipulation of genital tract (presumably mimicking the act of copulation), insemination substance (saline vs. semen), and insemination volume (1 vs. 8 µl) all have long-term effects on mandibular gland chemical profiles. In contrast, Dufour''s gland chemical profiles were changed only upon insemination and were not influenced by exposure to carbon dioxide, manipulation, insemination substance or volume. These results suggest that the chemical contents of these two glands are regulated by different neuro-physiological mechanisms. Furthermore, workers responded differently to the different mandibular gland extracts in a choice assay. Although these studies must be validated in naturally mated queens of varying mating quality, our results suggest that while the chemical composition of Dufour''s gland is associated with mating status, that of the mandibular glands is associated with both mating status and insemination success. Thus, the queen appears to be signaling both status and reproductive quality to the workers, which may impact worker behavior and physiology as well as social organization and productivity of the colony.  相似文献

Recently, chemical analysis of solvent rinses of the external surfaces of pheromone glands from female Manduca sexta revealed a blend of 12 aldehydes, including the previously identified sex pheromone component, (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienal (bombykal). Previous electrophysiological studies showed that olfactory (deutocerebral) interneurons in the antennal lobes of males exhibited a wide range of responsiveness to pheromonal stimulation of the ipsilateral antenna. These experiments were performed with crude extracts of pheromone glands as well as two synthetic compounds: the major pheromone component, bombykal, and (E,Z)-11,13-pentadecadienal, a mimic of a second component of the female's pheromone blend. Using intracellular methods, we have now reexamined similar olfactory interneurons, using each of the 12 chemically identified components as well as synthetic blends of various combinations of them. Eight of the 12 components isolated from female glands elicited some form of response in olfactory interneurons in males. In accordance with biochemical and behavioral data, the most potent are bombykal and two trienals, (E,E,E)- and (E,E,Z)-10,12,14-hexadecatrienal. We also conclude that the C15 dienal is selective for one of the trienal receptors on the antenna, but is much less potent than the natural trienal stimulant.  相似文献

Pharaoh’s ants (Monomorium pharaonis) use at least three types of foraging trail pheromone: a long-lasting attractive pheromone and two short-lived pheromones, one attractive and one repellent. We measured the decay rates of the behavioural response of ant workers at a trail bifurcation to trail substrate marked with either repellent or attractive short-lived pheromones. Our results show that the repellent pheromone effect lasts more than twice as long as the attractive pheromone effect (78 min versus 33 min). Although the effects of these two pheromones decay at approximately the same rate, the initial effect of the repellent pheromone on branch choice is almost twice that of the attractive pheromone (48% versus 25% above control). We hypothesise that the two pheromones have complementary but distinct roles, with the repellent pheromone specifically directing ants at bifurcations, while the attractive pheromone guides ants along the entire trail. Experiments were conducted to determine the rôle of population density of queenright honey bee colonies, and that of the queen bee pheromonal secretions, on the induction and inhibition of swarming queen cup construction during swarming and non-swarming seasons. Construction of queen cups was induced experimentally in overcrowded queenright colonies, during winter, which is a non-swarming season. This construction was induced by high population density of bee workers: above a threshold of 2.3 bee workers/ml there was a relationship between the number of cups constructed and the colony density. During the swarming season a relationship was established between the free volume of a hive (population density) and the number of queen cups constructed: 1.5 cups in a colony that occupied 80,960 ml, compared with 77 cups in a colony hived within a volume of 20, 240 ml. Observations of the queen's movements upon combs in colonies of high and normal population densities showed that in an overcrowded colony the queen bee was almost absent from the bottom edges of the comb, where queen swarming cups and cells are constructed. The tarsal glands of queens are located in the fifth tarsomere and the glandular oily secretion is deposited by the foot-pads upon the combs surface. The rate of secretion by the queen's tarsal glands was about 13 times higher than by those of the workers. A bioassay for testing the inhibitory effects of the queen's glandular extracts on the construction of queen cups was developed. It was based on increasing worker bee population densities, and can be used effectively throughout the year in a subtropical climate. The application of tarsal and mandibular glands' secretion to comb bottom edges in overcrowded colonies (bioassay) caused the inhibition of queen cup construction. None of these two secretions affected construction of these cups when applied separately. We presume that due to colony overcrowding the queen bee is unable to deposit the non-volatile secretions from tarsal glands along the comb edges and that the deficiency of the foot-print pheromone triggers the construction of swarming cups along the non-inhibited areas.  相似文献

The present study investigates the effects of age and mating status on the circadian variations of gland sex pheromone titre in female Spodoptera litura Fabricius. Similar to other nocturnal moths, S. litura females exhibit circadian variations of gland sex pheromone contents, with higher levels during scotophase and lower levels during photophase. The sex pheromone titre in the glands peaks during the first scotophase after eclosion and sharply declines afterwards. Higher pheromone contents during scotophase may facilitate female reproductive activities, and the negative relationship between pheromone titre and female calling is likely the result of pheromone release during female calling. Interestingly, the present study demonstrates that mated S. litura females have significantly higher sex pheromone titre in their pheromone glands (PGs) than virgin females. This finding contrasts with all previous studies of other insect species, in which mating generally reduces the sex pheromone titre in female PGs. In S. litura, mating and male accessory gland fluids can suppress female calling behaviours and re‐matings. These results suggest that the suppression of female calling behaviours by mating and male accessory gland fluids may significantly reduce the release of sex pheromones and thus result in higher sex pheromone titre in the PGs of mated females.  相似文献

A characteristic feature of onychophorans is the presence of crural glands in males. These exocrine glands open on the ventral surface at the base of the legs. Their restriction to males suggests a sexual function. Histochemical staining of the glands indicates that their secretion has both a lipid and a protein component. Behavioural bioassays show that the secretion acts as a pheromone attractive to conspecific females. The production of a sex pheromone in onychophorans is discussed in relation to their ecology and phylogeny.  相似文献

Formicine ants in distress spray alarm pheromone which typically recruits nestmates for help. Studying the western carpenter ant, Camponotus modoc Wheeler (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), our objectives were to (1) determine the exocrine glands that contain alarm recruitment pheromone, (2) identify the key alarm recruitment pheromone components, and (3) ascertain the pheromone components that are discharged by distressed ants. In Y-tube olfactometer experiments, extracts of poison glands, but not of Dufour’s glands, elicited anemotactic responses from worker ants. Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analyses of poison gland extracts revealed the presence of (1) aliphatic alkanes (undecane, tridecane, pentadecane, heptadecane), (2) aliphatic alkenes [(Z)-7-pentadecene, (Z)-7- and (Z)-8-heptadecene], (3) two acids (formic, benzoic), and (4) other oxygenated compounds (hexadecan-1-ol, hexadecyl formate, hexadecyl acetate). Testing the responses of worker ants in Y-tube olfactometers to complete and partial synthetic blends of these compounds revealed that the acids and the alkanes are essential alarm pheromone components. In two-choice arena bioassays, micro-locations treated with synthetic alarm pheromone recruited worker ants. Acids and alkanes were abundant in the poison gland and the Dufour’s gland, respectively, suggesting that the alarm pheromone components originate from both glands. Moreover, alarm pheromone sprays of ants differed in that all sprays contained formic acid but only some also contained alkanes, implying that ants can independently discharge the content of either one or both glands in accordance with the type of distress incident they experience.  相似文献

Macrolepidopteran female moths in families such as Geometridae produce epoxyalkenyl sex pheromones, which are biosynthesized via epoxidation of polyunsaturated hydrocarbons in their pheromone glands. The precursors, however, are expected to be produced outside of the pheromone glands, probably in oenocytes or in the fat body, and transported to the glands via hemolymph. Based on these facts, the selectivity of the epoxidation substrates and of the precursor uptake by pheromone glands was examined with two geometrid species, Hemerophila artilineata and Ascotis selenaria cretacea, using binary mixtures of deuterated precursors and their analogs, which were topically applied to the pheromone glands or injected into the abdomen. GC-MS measurements of pheromone extracts showed equal epoxidation of two polyenes, indicating a low selectivity for both processes, while the epoxidation proceeded at only one double bond specific to each species. This result makes it possible to conclude that the formation of species-specific epoxyalkenyl pheromones results from the rigid formation of polyunsaturated precursors and their epoxidation at a fixed position. Next, the neuroendocrine regulation of these processes was studied with in vivo and in vitro experiments using decapitated females. The epoxy pheromones disappeared completely within 36 h of decapitation, and epoxidation of the injected precursors was not detected in the decapitated females, which restarted the reaction by treatment with a pheromone biosynthesis-activating neuropeptide (PBAN). The precursors topically applied to glands of the decapitated females, however, were converted into epoxy pheromones without PBAN, indicating that this neuropeptide hormone accelerated the precursor uptake by pheromone glands but not the epoxidation already underway in the glands.  相似文献

The cephalic region of the labial gland in the buff-tailed bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, consists of numerous acini (formed by associated secretory cells and a central lumen) and connecting ducts. Age-dependent changes in secretion production (both qualitative and quantitative) are associated with changes in the amount of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), Golgi apparatus, and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER). The main secretory organelle is RER in the youngest individuals (pharate, and less-than-a-day old males), Golgi apparatus in 1-day-old males, and SER in males older than 2 days. Secretory cell death starts at 5 days of age, with maximal longevity to 10 days. Pheromone production starts immediately after eclosion, with pheromone quantities increasing until day 7. 2,3-dihydrofarnesol, the main component of the male-marking pheromone, appears in 1-day-old male glands, and reaches a maximum at 7 days of age, when its presence in the gland starts to decrease gradually. Older glands contain compounds not present in young ones. Variation in pheromone quantity and composition are reflected sensitively in the response of the queen antennae. Though queen antennae responded to gland extracts of all ages examined, maximum sensitivity was observed in response to extracts of glands 2-10 days old, while extracts of older glands gradually lose their effectiveness. Both major and minor components of the labial gland secretion extract elicited queen antennal responses suggesting that the pheromone is a multicomponent blend. Age-dependent changes in pheromone production, accumulation and tuning of pheromone activity are all synchronized approximately with male flight from the hive.  相似文献

A factor in bird skin responsible forD. gallinae feeding on its natural hosts was investigated. Both skin and plumage of chickens contained substance(s) attractive to mites which was easily dissolved in benzene derivates, amyl acetate or ethyl acetate, thermostabile up to 100°C, nonvolatile, alkaline hydrolysable, and susceptible to oxidation. Components of surface skin lipids were ascertained to be the host-markers when using Chromatographic separation and consecutive in vitro feeding technique for testing the isolates. Purified specific fowl diol esters of fatty acids prepared from the secretion of uropygial (preen) glands of hens were at least as effective a feeding stimulant for the mites as the natural extract of surface lipids of birds.  相似文献

It is well known that eccrine sweating is attenuated in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). We have reported by using proteome analysis that gross cystic disease fluid protein 15 (GCDFP15), a substance secreted from eccrine sweat glands, is decreased in tape-stripped stratum corneum (SC) samples from AD patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate GCDFP15 production by eccrine glands with SC samples and to assess sweating in AD. SC samples were obtained from 51 healthy control (HC) and 51 AD individuals. Sweat samples were from 18 HC and 12 AD subjects. GCDFP15 was quantified by ELISA. By immunohistochemistry, the expression of GCDFP15 in eccrine glands was examined in normal and AD skin specimens. To identify GCDFP15-producing cells, double immunofluorescence staining for GCDFP15 and S100 protein was performed in frozen sections. To address the mechanism underlying the decreased eccrine sweating in AD patients, we examined the expression of cholinergic receptor M3 (CHRM3), a receptor for acetylcholine-induced sweating, in eccrine sweat glands. The amounts of GCDFP15 in the SC extracts were significantly lower in AD than HC (P < 0.0001). The sweat samples from AD patients also had lower levels of GCDFP15 concentration (P < 0.05). Immunohistochemistry showed positive GCDFP15 staining in the eccrine gland secretory cells and the ductal and acrosyringial lumen in normal skin, but AD lacked clear staining. Immunofluorescence staining revealed that GCDFP15 was co-expressed with S100 protein, suggesting that the clear cell of eccrine glands produces GCDFP15. Finally, we found that the expression of CHRM3 was depressed in AD, suggesting contribution to the low sweating. The SC of AD patients contains a low amount of GCDFP15 due to both low sweating and low GCDFP15 concentration in the sweat. GCDFP15 in SC is a potential marker for dysregulated sweating in AD.  相似文献

Many social insects use pheromones to communicate and coordinatetheir activities. Investigation of intraspecific differencesin pheromone use is a new area of social insect research. Forexample, interindividual variation in alarm pheromone contenthas been found in physical castes of polymorphic ants. Manyant species use multiple trail pheromones. Here we present novelresearch into trail pheromone variations between behavioralsubcastes of pharaoh ants, Monomorium pharaonis. Monomoriumpharaonis is attracted to trail pheromones found in its poisonglands (monomorines) and Dufour's glands (faranal). We showthat the most abundant monomorines, I (M1) and III (M3), canbe readily detected in pheromone trails. A behaviorally distinctsubcaste known as "pathfinder" foragers can relocate long-livedpheromone trails. Chemical analysis showed that pathfinder foragershad low M3:M1 ratios (mean 3.09 ± 1.53, range 1.03–7.10).Nonpathfinder foragers had significantly greater M3:M1 ratios(38.3 ± 60.0, range 3.54–289). We found that M3:M1ratio did not differ between foragers of different age but wascorrelated with behavioral subcaste at all ages. The relativeabundance of M3:M1 on foraging trails ranged from 3.03–41.3over time during pheromone trail build-up. M3:M1 ratio alsovaried spatially throughout trail networks, being lowest ontrail sections closest to a food source (M3:M1 = 1.9–3.61)and highest near the nest (M3:M1 = 67–267). Our resultsindicate a functional role for differences in pheromone trailcomposition, whereby pathfinder foragers might preferentiallymark sections of pheromone trail networks for future exploration.  相似文献

A mating duration of more than 6 h was necessary to permanently terminate the production of the sex pheromone (bombykol) in the silkworm moth, Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), although the female formed a bursa copulatrix including a spermatophore and laid fertilized eggs even after mating for only 0.5 h. The 6-h mated female again produced bombykol if given an injection of synthetic pheromonotropic neuropeptide (PBAN), which is known to activate pheromone biosynthesis in a virgin female. Extracts of brain-suboesophageal ganglion (SG) complexes, which were removed from 6- and 24-h mated females, showed strong pheromonotropic activities. These results indicated that the pheromone gland of the mated female maintained its ability to biosynthesize bombykol; however, it could not produce pheromone due to a suppression of PBAN secretion from the SG. Furthermore, bombykol titers did not decrease after mating in females with a transected ventral nerve cord, even after the injection of a spermatophore extract, suggesting that the suppression of PBAN secretion was mediated by a neural signal and not by a substance in the spermatophore. The mated females accumulated (10E, 12Z)-10,12-hexadecadienoic acid, a precursor of bombykol biosynthesis, in their pheromone glands as did decapitated females. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the specialized skin glands of the forehead, metatarsal gland and interdigital regions of Roebucks are described and compared with glands of the general body surface. In both the forehead region and dorsal skin the sebaceous and apocrine glands enlarge as the testes enlarge and regress after the rut, but the glands of the forehead region are at least three times larger than those of the general body surface. The apocrine glands of the forehead region discharge by exocytosis except at the time of maximum secretion, which precedes total cell breakdown. In the metatarsal and interdigital regions the skin glands are enlarged throughout the year.  相似文献
