We visually observed 1,251 dives, of 14 sea otters instrumented with TDRs in southeast Alaska, and used attribute values from observed dives to classify 180,848 recorded dives as foraging (0.64), or traveling (0.36). Foraging dives were significantly deeper, with longer durations, bottom times, and postdive surface intervals, and greater descent and ascent rates, compared to traveling dives. Most foraging occurred in depths between 2 and 30 m (0.84), although 0.16 of all foraging was between 30 and 100 m. Nine animals, including all five males, demonstrated bimodal patterns in foraging depths, with peaks between 5 and 15 m and 30 and 60 m, whereas five of nine females foraged at an average depth of 10 m. Mean shallow foraging depth was 8 m, and mean deep foraging depth was 44 m. Maximum foraging depths averaged 61 m (54 and 82 for females and males, respectively) and ranged from 35 to 100 m. Female sea otters dove to depths ≤20 m on 0.85 of their foraging dives while male sea otters dove to depths ≥45 m on 0.50 of their foraging dives. Less than 0.02 of all foraging dives were >55 m, suggesting that effects of sea otter foraging on nearshore marine communities should diminish at greater depths. However, recolonization of vacant habitat by high densities of adult male sea otters may result in initial reductions of some prey species at depths >55 m.  相似文献

Here, we describe the diving behavior of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) using the Advanced Dive Behavior (ADB) tag, which records depth data at 1‐Hz resolution and GPS‐quality locations for over 1 month, before releasing from the whale for recovery. A total of 27 ADB tags were deployed on sperm whales in the central Gulf of California, Mexico, during spring 2007 and 2008, of which 10 were recovered for data download. Tracking durations of all tags ranged from 0 to 34.5 days (median = 2.3 days), and 0.6 to 26.6 days (median = 5.0 days) for recovered tags. Recovered tags recorded a median of 50.8 GPS‐quality locations and 42.6 dives per day. Dive summary metrics were generated for archived dives and were subsequently classified into six categories using hierarchical cluster analysis. A mean of 77% of archived dives per individual were one of four dive categories with median Maximum Dive Depth >290 m (V‐shaped, Mid‐water, Benthic, or Variable), likely associated with foraging. Median Maximum Dive Depth was <30 m for the other two categories (Short‐ and Long‐duration shallow dives), likely representing socializing or resting behavior. Most tagged whales remained near the tagging area during the tracking period, but one moved north of Isla Tiburón, where it appeared to regularly dive to, and travel along the seafloor. Three whales were tagged on the same day in 2007 and subsequently traveled in close proximity (<1 km) for 2 days. During this period, the depth and timing of their dives were not coordinated, suggesting they were foraging on a vertically heterogeneous prey field. The multiweek dive records produced by ADB tags enabled us to generate a robust characterization of the diving behavior, activity budget, and individual variation for an important predator of the mesopelagos over temporal and spatial scales not previously possible.  相似文献

Abstract: Direct observations of feeding sea otters ( Enhydra lutris ) at 11 sites in southeast Alaska showed infaunal clams to be the primary prey utilized by otters throughout the region. Foraging dive times associated with clam and sea urchin prey were significantly longer than those for more easily captured prey (crabs and mussels). Dive times and surface intervals were also generally correlated with water depth or apparent difficulty in obtaining buried prey. Male otters, which fed more extensively on clams than females, made significantly longer foraging dives than females. Foraging success remained high, even at sites where prey numbers were found to be very low during a related study. The very deeply burrowing geoduck clam ( Panope abrupta ), while common at several otter feeding sites, was rarely captured by otters. These results, combined with those of a companion study on prey numbers, indicate that butter clams ( Saxidomus giganteus ) account for the majority of the sea otter diet in southeast Alaska, and that sea urchins may represent relatively short-term prey in comparison to infaunal bivalves in regions where both prey types co-exist. Furthermore, the importance of butter clams in the sea otter diet and the tendency for this bivalve to retain chronically high levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins in southeast Alaska increases the probability that toxic phytoplankton blooms influence sea otter distribution in this region.  相似文献

Solitary felids are commonly associated with structurally complex habitats, where their foraging success is attributed to stealth and remaining undetected by competitive scavengers. Research in North America suggests that pumas (Puma concolor), a wide-ranging species found throughout the Americas, conform to the general characteristics of solitary felids and avoid open grasslands with aggregating prey. Researchers hypothesize that pumas are limited to structurally complex habitats in North America because of pressures from other large, terrestrial competitors. We explored the spatial ecology of pumas in open habitat with aggregating prey in Chilean Patagonia, where pumas lack large, terrestrial competitors. We tracked 11 pumas over 30 months (intensive location data for 9 pumas with GPS collars for 9.33 ± 5.66 months each) in an area where mixed steppe grasslands composed 53% of the study area and carried 98% of available prey biomass, to track resource use relative to availability, assess daily movements, quantify home ranges and calculate their density. As determined by location data and kill sites, Patagonia pumas were primarily associated with open habitats with high prey biomass, but at finer scales, preferentially selected for habitat with complex structure. On average, pumas traveled 13.42 ± 2.50 km per day. Estimated 95% fixed kernel home ranges averaged 98 ± 31.8 km2 for females and 211 ± 138.8 km2 for males, with high spatial overlap within and between the sexes. In a multivariate analysis, available prey biomass was the strongest predictor of variation in the size of an individual puma's home range. Finally, we determined a total puma density of 3.44 pumas/100 km2, a significantly smaller estimate than previously reported for Patagonia, but similar to densities reported for North America.  相似文献

Groups of female and immature sperm whales live at low latitudes and show a stereotypical diving and foraging behavior with dives lasting about 45 min to depths of between 400 and 1200 m. In comparison, physically mature male sperm whales migrate to high latitudes where little is known about their foraging behavior and ecology. Here we use acoustic recording tags to study the diving and acoustic behavior of male sperm whales foraging off northern Norway. Sixty-five hours of tag data provide detailed information about the movements and sound repertoire of four male sperm whales performing 83 dives lasting between 6 and 60 min. Dives ranged in depth between 14 and 1860 m, with a median depth of 175 m, and 92% of the surfacings lasted less than 15 min. The four whales clicked for an average 91% (SD = 10) of the dive duration, where the first usual click was produced at depths ranging between 4 and 218 m and the last usual click at depths ranging between 1 and 1114 m. Echolocation buzzes, which are used as an indication of prey capture attempts, were emitted at depths between 17 and 1860 m, during both the descent and ascent phase of deep dives. The foraging behavior varied markedly with depth, with the timing and duration of prey capture attempts during shallow dives suggesting that the whales target more sparsely distributed prey. In contrast, deep dives involve frequent prey capture attempts and seem to target more dense food layers. The evidence of exploitation of different food layers, including epipelagic prey, is consistent with the hypothesis that male sperm whales may migrate to high latitudes to access a productive, multi-layered foraging habitat.  相似文献

The diving and foraging behaviours of Adélie penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, rearing chiks at Hukuro Cove, Lützow-Holm Bay, where the fast sea-ice remained throughout summer, were compared to those of penguins at Magnetic Island, Prydz Bay, where the fast sea-ice disappeared in early January. Parent penguins at Hukuro Cove made shallower (7.1–11.3 m) but longer (90–111 s) dives than those at Magnetic Island (22.9 m and 62 s). Dive duration correlated with dive depth at both colonies (r 2 = 0.001 ∼ 0.90), but the penguins atg Hukuro Cove made longer dives for a given depth. Parents at Hukuro Cove made shorter foraging trips (8.1–14.4 h) with proportionally longer walking/swimming (diving < 1 m) travel time (27–40% of trip duration) and returned with smaller meals (253–293 g) than those at Magnetic Island, which foraged on average for 57.2 h, spent 2% of time walking/swimming ( < 1 m) travel, and with meals averaging 525 g. Trip duration at both colonies correlated to the total time spent diving. Trip duration at Hukuro Cove, but not at Magnetic Island, increased as walking/swimming ( < 1 m) travel time increased. These differences in foraging behaviour between colonies probably reflected differences in sea-ice cover and the availability of foraging sites. Urbanization often has negative impacts on wildlife, nevertheless many species can persist in heavily modified habitats. Understanding factors that promote species persistence in urbanizing landscapes is therefore important for maintaining biodiversity in changing landscapes and may inform more biodiversity-friendly development. We investigated effects of landscape-scale variables on habitat occupancy of Smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) in the Inner Gulf of Thailand. In this internationally important wetland complex, 86% of natural habitats have been altered and are now highly urbanized. We conducted track and sign surveys in 60, 25 km2 grid cells encompassing 1,474 km2. Within each cell, we quantified the landscape cover types including urban areas, natural habitat (predominately thin ribbons of mangrove along waterways), agriculture, aquaculture, and potential prey availability using a GIS and field surveys. We used occupancy models to identify habitat variables that affected probability of detection and occupancy. Estimated otter occupancy, based on the top model, was 0.33 ± 0.07 (95% CI 0.18–0.48) and detection probability was 0.50 ± 0.05 (95% CI 0.41–0.60). Otter occupancy was positively associated with the proportion of natural habitat and the cover of traditional aquaculture ponds, but negatively associated with agriculture and urban cover. The remaining natural patches appear to act as critical refuges for otter, allowing them to persist in an otherwise heavily transformed landscape. Because aquaculture ponds are likely important prey sources for otters, it may lead to conflict with aquaculture farmers. Further studies of feeding and movement patterns in cooperation with aquaculture farmers would be beneficial for developing detailed management plans for the species in this human dominated landscape.  相似文献

We present data on diving pattern and performance (dive depth, duration, frequency and organization during the foraging trip) in gentoo penguins Pygoscelis papua , obtained using time-depth recorders ( n = 9 birds, 99 foraging trips). These data are used to estimate various parameters of foraging activity, e.g. foraging range, prey capture rates, and are compared in relation to breeding chronology. Foraging trip duration was 6 h and 10 h, and trip frequency 1.0/day and 0.96/day, during the brooding and creche periods, respectively. Birds spent on average 52%of each foraging trip diving. Dive depth and duration were highly bimodal: shallow dives (< 21 m) averaged 4 m and 0.23 min, and deep dives (> 30 m) 80 m and 2.5 min, respectively. Birds spent on average 71%and 25%of total diving time in deep and shallow dives, respectively. For deep dives, dive duration exceeded the subsequent surface interval, but shallow dives were followed by surface intervals 2–3 times dive duration. We suggest that most shallow dives are searching/exploratory dives and most deep dives are feeding dives. Deep dives showed clear diel patterns averaging 40 m at dawn and dusk and 80–90 m at midday. Estimated foraging ranges were 2.3 km and 4.1 km during the brood and creche period, respectively. Foraging trip duration increased by 4 h between the brood and creche periods but total time spent in deep dives (i.e. time spent feeding) was the same (3 h). Of 99 foraging trips, 56%consisted of only one dive bout and 44%of 2–4 bouts delimited by extended surface intervals > 10 min. We suggest that this pattern of diving activity reflects variation in spatial distribution of prey rather than the effect of physiological constraints on diving ability.  相似文献

Large ungulate population monitoring is a crucial wildlife management tool as ungulates help in structuring and maintaining the large carnivore populations. Reliable data on population status of major ungulate prey species are still non-existent for most of the protected areas in the Indian part of the eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot. Twenty transects were monitored over a period of three years (2009–2011) totaling 600 km with an average length of 2 km. The estimated mean density of ungulates was 17.5 km−2 with overall density of 48.7 km−2. The wild pig Sus scrofa had the highest density (6.7 ± 1.2 km−2) among all the prey species followed by barking deer Muntiacus muntjak (3.9 ± 0.6 km−2), sambar Rusa unicolor (3.8 ± 0.5) and gaur Bos gaurus (3.5 ± 0.9 km−2). The estimated total ungulate biomass density was 2182.56 kg km−2. This prey biomass can support up to 7.2 tigers per 100 km−2. However, with two other sympatric carnivores sharing the same resources, the actual tiger numbers that can be supported will be lower. The estimated minor prey species was 31 km−2 significantly 30.6% crop damages were reported by wild pig (p = 0.01) and 35.4% was elephant (p = 0.004). This data on ungulate densities and biomass will be crucial for carnivore conservation in this understudied globally significant biodiversity hotspot.  相似文献

To investigate tropical roles of the newly described Yihiella yeosuensis (ca. 8 μm in cell size), one of the smallest phototrophic dinoflagellates in marine ecosystems, its trophic mode and the types of prey species that Y. yeosuensis can feed upon were explored. Growth and ingestion rates of Y. yeosuensis on its optimal prey, Pyramimonas sp. (Prasinophyceae), as a function of prey concentration were measured. Additionally, growth and ingestion rates of Y. yeosuensis on the other edible prey, Teleaulax sp. (Cryptophyceae), were also determined for a single prey concentration at which both these rates of Y. yeosuensis on Pyramimonas sp. were saturated. Among bacteria and diverse algal prey tested, Y. yeosuensis fed only on small Pyramimonas sp. and Teleaulax sp. (both cell sizes = 5.6 μm). With increasing mean prey concentrations, both specific growth and ingestion rates of Y. yeosuensis increased rapidly before saturating at a mean Pyramimonas concentration of 109 ng C mL−1 (2725 cells mL−1). The maximum growth rate (mixotrophic growth) of Y. yeosuensis fed with Pyramimonas sp. at 20 °C under a 14:10-h light-dark cycle of 20 μE m−2 s−1 was 1.32 d−1, whereas the growth rate of Y. yeosuensis without added prey was 0.026 d−1. The maximum ingestion rate of Y. yeosuensis fed with Pyramimonas sp. was 0.37 ng C predator−1 d−1 (9.3 cells predator−1 d−1). At a Teleaulax concentration of 1130 ng C mL−1 (66,240 cells mL−1), growth and ingestion rates of Y. yeosuensis fed with Teleaulax sp. were 1.285 d−1 and 0.38 ng C predator−1 d−1 (22.4 cells predator−1 d−1), respectively. Thus, Y. yeosuensis rarely grows without mixotrophy, and mixotrophy supports high growth rates in Y. yeosuensis. Y. yeosuensis has the highest maximum mixotrophic growth rate with the exception of Ansanella graniferaamong engulfment feeding mixotrophic dinoflagellates. However, the high swimming speed of Y. yeosuensis (1572 μm s−1), almost the highest among phototrophic dinoflagellates, may prevent autotrophic growth. This evidence suggests that Y. yeosuensis may be an effective mixotrophic dinoflagellate predator on Pyramimonas and Teleaulax, and occurs abundantly during or after blooms of these two prey species.  相似文献

We report on keeping conditions of the Asian small-clawed otter Amblonyx cinereus in European Zoos. In 2007 434 individuals were kept in 86 Zoos. 50% of these zoos keep their otters in groups from seven up to 21 individuals, similarly as suggested for the wild. The area available for each individual in 51 enclosures ranges from 5.2 m2 to 464 m2 in enclosures, where otters are held together with larger animals (apes, lions etc.).  相似文献

Zostera marina distribution is circum-global and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Consequently, it is likely that populations have adapted to local environmental conditions of light, temperature and nutrient supply. We compared Z. marina growth dynamics over a 2-year period in relation to environmental characters at Jindong Bay, South Korea and Yaquina Bay, Oregon, USA. Water temperature in Jindong Bay showed stronger seasonal variation (summer–winter ΔT = 20 °C) than in Yaquina Bay (summer–winter ΔT < 5 °C). Underwater irradiance in Jindong Bay exhibited a winter maximum, while in Yaquina Bay underwater light exhibited a summer maximum. Integrated annual underwater irradiance during 2003 was 2200 and 1200 mol photons m−2 year−1 in Korea and Oregon, respectively. Z. marina shoot density, biomass and integrated production were not significantly different between the two study sites. Seasonal Z. marina growth in Jindong Bay appeared to be controlled by temperature and light, while the growth pattern in Yaquina Bay suggested light regulation. Several seagrass parameters were correlated to phosphate concentrations, even though nutrients did not appear limiting. Despite differences in environmental factors, relative growth rates and temporal growth dynamics between study sites, integrated annual leaf production was quite similar at 335 and 353 g DW m−2 year−1 in the Jindong and Yaquina Bay study sites. We suggest that Z. marina net productivity is acclimated to the local environmental conditions and may be a general characteristic of temperate seagrass populations.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of catchment and riparian stream buffer-wide urban and non-urban land cover/land use (LC/LU) on total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) runoff to the Chesapeake Bay. The effects of the composition and configuration of LC/LU patches were explored in particular. A hybrid-statistical-process model, the SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW), was calibrated with year 1997 watershed-wide, average annual TN and TP discharges to Chesapeake Bay. Two variables were predicted: (1) yield per unit watershed area and (2) mass delivered to the upper estuary. The 166,534 km2 watershed was divided into 2339 catchments averaging 71 km2. LC/LU was described using 16 classes applied to both the catchments and also to riparian stream buffers alone. Seven distinct landscape metrics were evaluated. In all, 167 (TN) and 168 (TP) LC/LU class metric combinations were tested in each model calibration run. Runs were made with LC/LU in six fixed riparian buffer widths (31, 62, 125, 250, 500, and 1000 meters (m)) and entire catchments. The significance of the non-point source type (land cover, manure and fertilizer application, and atmospheric deposition) and factors affecting land-to-water delivery (physiographic province and natural or artificial land surfaces) was assessed. The model with a 31 m riparian stream buffer width accounted for the highest variance of mean annual TN (r2 = 0.9366) and TP (r2 = 0.7503) yield (mass for a specified time normalized by drainage area). TN and TP loadings (mass for a specified time) entering the Chesapeake Bay were estimated to be 1.449 × 108 and 5.367 × 106 kg/yr, respectively. Five of the 167 TN and three of the 168 TP landscape metrics were shown to be significant (p-value  0.05) either for non-point sources or land-to-water delivery variables. This is the first demonstration of the significance of riparian LC/LU and landscape metrics on water quality simulation in a watershed as large as the Chesapeake Bay. Land cover metrics can therefore be expected to improve the precision of estimated TN and TP annual loadings to the Chesapeake Bay and may also suggest changes in land management that may be beneficial in control of nutrient runoff to the Chesapeake Bay and similar watersheds elsewhere.  相似文献

Five-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD5) removal efficiency was evaluated for the marshland upwelling system (MUS) under both intermediate and saltwater conditions. The MUS treated decentralized wastewater from two private camps and a public restroom in the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Moss Point, Mississippi, and one private camp in the Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary, along Bayou Segnette, Louisiana. Raw wastewater was injected into the surrounding subsurface at a depth of 3.8 or 4.3 m. Various injection flow rates and frequencies were tested in addition to a synthetic wastewater trial. All trials followed a first-order background corrected removal equation, resulting in removal constants ranging from 0.49 to 3.32 m?1 and predicted surface concentrations from 5.7 to 33.0 mg L?1. CBOD5 (unfiltered) influent concentrations of 282 ± 173 mg L?1 were reduced to an overall effluent mean of 13 ± 13 mg L?1 by a vector distance of 7 m at Moss Point and from 365 ± 151 mg L?1 to 3.6 ± 7.6 mg L?1 by a vector distance of 6 m for Bayou Segnette. Of seven trials, only one failed to achieve effluent CBOD5 levels below a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) standard level of 25 mg L?1.  相似文献

The algicidal and growth-inhibiting bacteria associated with seagrasses and macroalgae were characterized during the summer of 2012 and 2013 throughout Puget Sound, WA, USA. In 2012, Heterosigma akashiwo-killing bacteria were observed in concentrations of 2.8 × 106 CFU g−1 wet in the outer organic layer (biofilm) on the common eelgrass (Zostera marina) in north Padilla Bay. Bacteria that inhibited the growth of Alexandrium tamarense were detected within the biofilm formed on the eelgrass canopy at Dumas Bay and North Bay at densities of ∼108 CFU g−1 wet weight. Additionally, up to 4100 CFU mL−1 of algicidal and growth-inhibiting bacteria affecting both A. tamarense and H. akashiwo were detected in seawater adjacent to seven different eelgrass beds. In 2013, H. akashiwo-killing bacteria were found on Z. marina and Ulva lactuca with the highest densities of ∼108 CFU g−1 wet weight at Shallow Bay, Sucia Island. Bacteria that inhibited the growth of H. akashiwo and A. tamarense were also detected on Z. marina and Z. japonica at central Padilla Bay. Heterosigma akashiwo cysts were detected at a concentration of 3400 cysts g−1 wet weight in the sediment from Westcott Bay (northern San Juan Island), a location where eelgrass disappeared in 2002. These findings provide new insights on the ecology of algicidal and growth-inhibiting bacteria, and suggest that seagrass and macroalgae provide an environment that may influence the abundance of harmful algae in this region. This work highlights the importance of protection and restoration of native seagrasses and macroalgae in nearshore environments, in particular those regions where shellfish restoration initiatives are in place to satisfy a growing demand for seafood.  相似文献

We investigated the distribution of two charophyte species, Chara fibrosa var. fibrosa (A. Br.) and Nitella hyalina (DC.) Ag., in Myall Lake, a shallow lake in New South Wales, Australia, in an attempt to elucidate the factors causing their distribution patterns. The field study was carried out from July 2003 to May 2005 and charophytes were sampled together with bottom sediments at 20 sampling locations in the lake on 13 occasions. Charophyte biomass (0–321 g DW m−2) displayed an optimum curve with depth and maximum biomass occurred between 1 and 2.5 m depth. In deeper water, shoots were longer (i.e., around 30 cm at 1 m depth to 60–90 cm between 2 and 4 m depth). Oospore and antheridia densities were higher in shallower water with a maximum around 80 cm. Plants growing in shallow depths had shorter internodes implying a short life cycle of shoots, and nodal spacing was relatively regular in contrast to its deep water counterparts although spacing tended to increase at locations farther from the apex. The present study also reports that there is an apparent decline in sexual propagule production rates with increasing water depth, further highlighting the different morphological and reproductive acclimations of charophytes in shallow and deep water.  相似文献

The marine otter Lontra felina has been said to prefer wave-exposed habitats over more protected sites in response to a greater prey abundance in exposed habitat. We examined how the foraging activity of L. felina is affected by the regime of wave exposure and prey availability at Isla Choros, northern Chile. Through focal sampling we recorded time spent by otters in foraging, the duration of dives, and the hunting success on a wave-exposed and a wave-protected site on the island. In addition, we quantified the abundance of prey in both habitats. Marine otters spent more time foraging in the wave-protected site compared with the wave-exposed habitat. Successful dives reached 26.9% in the wave-exposed habitats, and 38.2% in the wave-protected habitat. Foraging dives were 18% shorter in wave-exposed as compared with wave-protected habitat. Numerically, available prey did not differ significantly with habitat. Our results are more consistent with the hypothesis that wave-exposed habitats represent a sub-optimal habitat to foraging marine otters. Marine otters’ use of wave-exposed patches through northern and central Chile coastal areas probably reflects a low availability of suitable protected areas and greater human disturbance of more protected habitat.  相似文献

The density of Zostera marina L. seeds in bottom sediments was examined to study the reproductive patterns of the Z. marina population in Ago Bay, Mie Prefecture, central Japan.Seeds and seed coats were numerous in Tategami, where the annual type of Z. marina grows. In contrast, seeds were scarce in Hamajima, where the perennial type of Z. marina grows. Bottom sediment was sampled with sediment cores at Tategami in November 2004 and March 2005 to examine density and depth distribution of the seeds. Seeds were found as deep as 8 cm, but no deeper. On the other hand, empty seed coats were found as deep as 16 cm in both months. In the upper layers of the sediment to a depth of 8 cm, the average number of seed coats was 7960 ± 2997 m−2 in November and 16,318 ± 2922 m−2 in March. Deeper than 8 cm, the number of seed coats gradually decreased owing to decomposition, and none was found below 16 cm. We used the density of reproductive shoots and number of seeds per spadix in Tategami to estimate the fate of seeds and seed coats of the annual type of Z. marina in bottom sediments: out of the 6000 seeds m−2 produced annually, 72% disappears from the stand and 28% is buried locally. The density and distribution of Z. marina seeds are among the most important factors in maintenance and propagation of the annual population at Tategami.  相似文献
