Species distribution modelling is a useful technique that provides data on factors that can influence a species range, identify high suitability areas and model future scenarios. The pine marten (Martes martes) has undergone major historical declines in abundance and distribution in Northern Ireland, similar to that which has occurred throughout its range. Currently, the species is in a phase of range expansion in Northern Ireland, in what is the least forested landscape in Europe. To assess the suitability of this environment for pine marten re-establishment, presence only distribution data combined with landcover data at a 10-km scale were used in a species distribution modelling study using Maxent. The results indicated that approximately 32% (4500 km2) of the land area of Northern Ireland had a high probability of pine marten occurrence. Pine marten distribution was positively associated with the extent of conifer forest landcover types, which also had the highest single attribute contribution to the model. Landcover types that were negatively associated with pine marten distribution included the extent of open, dwarf and urban areas.  相似文献

Pine martens (Martes martes) are subject to national and international conservation legislation throughout most of their European range. Yet population density and abundance estimates, which are a key component of effective conservation management, are lacking in many countries. In this study, a large-scale non-invasive survey was undertaken in 14 forested study sites throughout Ireland to assess variation in pine marten density and abundance. Pine marten hair samples were collected in each study site and analysed using genetic techniques to determine individual identity data. Density and abundance estimates were obtained using spatially explicit capture-recapture models and CAPWIRE. Across all study sites, a total of 93 individual pine marten were identified and captured 217 times. Estimated pine marten density varied from 0 to 2.60 individuals per km2 of forested habitat, with all but a single site having estimated densities of ≤1 pine marten per km2 of forest habitat. Mean population abundance estimates across all study sites ranged from 0 to 27 individuals. Spatially explicit capture-recapture models on combined data across all 14 study sites provided a mean density estimate of 0.64 (95% CI 0.49–0.81). Combining this with data on the current distribution and estimated area of forest habitat occupied by the species in Ireland, the total pine marten population abundance of pine marten in Ireland was estimated at 3043 (95% CI 2330–3852) individuals. This research has conducted the largest scale investigation of pine marten density and abundance in any part of its global distribution and provided an improved basis for future population assessment and monitoring of this species.  相似文献

Habitat segregation is considered to favour the coexistence of sympatric pine martens Martes martes and stone martens M. foina, the latter being displaced to agricultural and urbanised areas. Subsequent to the report of pine martens in cultivated areas of the western River Po plain (NW Italy), we reviewed all available information on the presence of this species in plain areas of northern Italy and, for two study areas, applied a non-invasive PCR-RFLP method for the identification of Martes species from faecal mtDNA.A total of 24 pine marten records were collected, grouped in the western part of the River Po plain. The number of records showed an exponential increase from 1988 to 2007, the percentage of woods in a 10 km2 wide circular plot surrounding the location of records being inversely correlated to its distance from the 300 m a.s.l. contour line. In the two study areas, 36 out of 119 “marten-like” faeces were assigned to the pine marten, whilst none belonged to the stone marten. In the best monitored area, the pine marten was present almost constantly. Our results suggest that the pine marten is expanding its range to include cultivated areas which were previously considered a prerogative of the more synanthropic stone marten.  相似文献

In Ireland, the UK and Italy, the invasive North American grey squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis, threatens the survival of the Eurasian red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris, as the effects of competition and disease almost inevitably lead to total replacement of red squirrel populations. However the results of a recent national squirrel survey suggested that the normally invasive grey squirrel had gone into decline in the Irish midlands, which was anecdotally attributed to an increase in European pine marten, Martes martes, range and numbers. This study aimed to quantify changes in squirrel distribution in Ireland and to investigate the role, if any, of the pine marten in red and grey squirrel population dynamics. A distribution survey of the midlands was carried out which confirmed the grey squirrel population has crashed in approximately 9,000 km2 of its former range and the red squirrel is common after an absence of up to 30 years. At landscape level, pine marten and red squirrel abundance were positively correlated, whereas a strong negative correlation between pine marten and grey squirrel presence at woodland level was found to exist. Squirrel demographics were determined by means of live trapping programs which confirmed that the red squirrel in the midlands is now in competitive release and the grey squirrel is present at unusually low density. This study provides the first evidence of a regional grey squirrel population crash and suggests that European pine marten abundance may be a critical factor in the American grey squirrel’s success or failure as an invasive species.  相似文献

The South American sea lion (Otaria byronia) (SSL) is a widespread opportunistic predator that inhabits waters ranging from Southern Ecuador to Southern Chile in the Pacific Ocean and from Southern Brazil to Southern Argentina in the Atlantic. SSL abundance estimates, as for many pinniped species, have relied on shore censuses, with the uncertainty that an indeterminate number of individuals at sea might remain uncounted. The proportion of the population that remains at sea during censuses and their distribution patterns are not clear and has been scarcely assessed. We used line transect sampling to gather information about at-sea abundance, density and spatial distribution of SSL in coastal waters off the Chilean Northern Patagonia. A total of 123 groups were sighted while on-effort, with an estimated density of 0.393 ind./km2 (95%CI = 0.262–0.591) and a total abundance, for the surveyed area, of 13,721 individuals (95%CI = 9127–20,627). Even when our survey was rather restricted in spatial range, generalized additive model results showed that depth, distance to SSL rockeries, coastline complexity and geographical coordinates had a significant influence on SSL spatial distribution. The results on abundance and spatial distribution of SSL at sea are discussed in terms of current population estimates. Our substantial at-sea abundance estimate suggests that shore censuses might have been historically biased. Several aspects should be taken into account in further research on SSL abundance, such as including pelagic waters and undertaking simultaneously on-rockery and marine SSL abundance estimates. The results presented here provide valuable insights for revisiting and possibly improve population estimates of SSL and other pinnipeds species worldwide. This is particularly relevant when management and conservation actions need to be taken on those species that have strong interactions with fisheries and aquaculture.  相似文献

Drivers of distribution patterns of poorly known species are among the most important aspects in conservation biology. We studied the proportion of area occupied by the large spotted genet (Genetta tigrina) and the slender mongoose (Galerella sanguine) in response to land use variables using camera-trapping data in Drakensberg Midlands, South Africa. Average estimated occupancy of large spotted genet and slender mongoose were 0.42 ± 0.10 and 0.41 ± 0.04 respectively using single season occupancy models. Altitudinal variation was found to be significant in the distribution of both species, along with human abundance for genet and availability of bushland for mongoose. Autumn influenced detection probability of both species negatively, while summer influenced slender mongoose positively. Relative human abundance was positively associated with detection probability of slender mongoose, and for large spotted genet, availability of bushland influenced positively while relative abundance of jackal (Canis mesomelas) influenced negatively. Occurrence of both species suggests that high elevations may not provide favourable ecological conditions, and bush cover appeared to be favourable habitats for both species. Either positive occurrence or detection of small carnivores to human abundance indicated their tendency to subsist in low-lying human populated areas. The present study shows the influence of a range of factors on the distribution of lesser known carnivores.  相似文献

Populations of granivorous farmland birds have dramatically declined during recent decades in many European countries. Winter conditions and consequently, survival rates of farmland bird species during this critical period, are considered as one of the main causes of this negative trend. However, the importance of different habitat structures and connected food sources for successful overwintering in bird species has gained little attention so far in the Czech Republic. In this study we aimed to examine the role of habitat composition and food availability on winter distribution and abundance of three declining sedentary and granivorous bird species. During the winters 2009–2014, 149 villages in the Czech Republic were monitored for distribution and density of three farmland seed-eaters. House Sparrow was the most dominant species (88.6% of villages occupied; 4.32 ± 4.67 ind./100 m of transect), followed by Tree Sparrow (67.1% villages occupied; 1.83 ± 3.53 ind./100 m of transect) and Collared Dove (65.8% villages occupied; 0.72 ± 1.51 ind./100 m of transect). Occurrence of House and Tree Sparrow was significantly affected by the number of instances of poultry keeping. In both species, occupied villages showed a higher number of instances of poultry keeping. We did not find any such significant relationship for Collared Dove. Density of House Sparrow was significantly higher in villages with dairy farms, but we failed to find this relationship for Tree Sparrow and Collared Dove. Habitat preferences were similar for all three studied species. They positively responded to the proportion of shrubs/trees, the keeping of poultry, dairy farms and they avoided houses, arable land and grasslands. We conclude that poultry keepings and dairy farms can be important for studied species during the winter since they offer high food availability and good protection against predators. This suggestion is supported by the fact that long-term population decline has coincided with a long-term reduction in the keeping of poultry and dairy farms in the Czech Republic during the last 50 years.  相似文献

Low density occurrence of large carnivore species and direct hunting of predators and prey make carnivore conservation complex. Vital baseline information on population status of large carnivores is still deficient in most forests of eastern Himalaya, which are known to be the biodiversity hotspots. To fill this information gap, we estimated the large carnivore population status and abundance in an intricate eastern Himalayan lowland tropical forest in Pakke Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh. Population status and abundance estimates of tigers and leopards were made through individual identification using closed capture-recapture sampling. To estimate the dhole abundance photographic encounter rate was used. For individually non-identifiable species photographic rate seemed to correlate well with animal abundance. The estimated tiger and leopard density through 1/2 MMDM was 2.14 ± 0.04/100 km2 and 2.99 ± 1.13/100 km2 respectively. Maximum likelihood estimates shows density of tiger 1.86 ± 0.7 and for leopard 2.82 ± 1.2.The estimated dhole abundance was (N) 10.6 ± 0.94, and density 6.62 ± 0.58 individuals in 100 km2. Further, occupancy estimation of large carnivores may be tried along with assessing the comparative efficacy of other population estimation methods to establish better monitoring methods for this region.  相似文献

Despite of the generalized expansion of wild ungulates in Europe, roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is experiencing contrasted population trends; it is expanding in some regions while declining in others likely due to the expansion of other deer species. In both extremes, reliable methods to estimate population abundance are required. We evaluated different methods of estimating deer abundance in Mediterranean woodlands based on pellet group counts. Distance Sampling applied to pellet counts and a new easier and cost-effective method based on strip-variable transect counts (FST) were assessed comparing their estimates (pellet group density) with the abundance indices obtained from traditionally used reference methods (faecal standing crop) in 61 localities (n = 183 surveys). The average roe deer density estimated from faecal standing crop was 5.56 ± 0.75 (range 0.01–20.74) deer per 100 ha. Distance Sampling and FST estimates correlated with reference methods. As a first conclusion it may be noted that all indirect methods used here can be used to estimate roe deer abundance. The selection of a given method based on pellet counts to estimate roe deer population abundance should take into account the specific objectives of the research, resources available, and the timescale in which the information is required. Among them, Distance Sampling may be used when human resources and skills are enough but FST is a rapid and efficient alternative to estimate pellet group density when they are not.  相似文献

Understanding the social organisation and spacing patterns of wildlife populations is an important aspect of conservation management and applied science. The present study investigated the spatial ecology of pine marten (Martes martes) inhabiting conifer forests in Ireland, the largest habitat resource available for the species. It represented the first study of pine marten spacing patterns in Irish conifer forests. Pine marten (n?=?7; five males and two females) were live-trapped and radio-tracked for between 4 and 10 months from March 2008 to March 2009. Mean annual home-range estimates (95 % fixed kernel) for males (150.7 ha) were generally larger than those of females (90.2 ha). There was considerable inter-seasonal overlap in home ranges (approx 85 %) with less inter-sexual (12.0 %) or intra-sexual (11.8 %) overlap, although the sample size of individuals for comparison was small. Pine marten home ranges were stable from season to season. Core ranges varied in size from 10.6 to 104.1 ha, and as a mean percentage of home-range area were 22.9 and 42.5 % for males and females, respectively. In terms of forest management, potential under occupancy of available space by pine marten and vulnerability of very small core ranges to clear felling practices needs further research to determine any impacts on individuals and populations.  相似文献

The decline in farmland birds observed throughout Europe during recent decades has attracted much attention. Agricultural intensification or land abandonment are commonly forwarded as key drivers. Several countries have established agri-environmental schemes (AES) to counter these negative trends among farmland birds. This paper reports a study of the relationship between land use and bird species in the agricultural landscape of Norway. The main objective was to investigate the effect of spatial heterogeneity and diversity of land use on total richness and abundance of farmland birds at a national level.Monitoring the distribution and abundance of birds is part of the Norwegian monitoring programme for agricultural landscapes. The monitoring programme is based on mapping of 1 × 1 km squares distributed across the entire agricultural landscape. Within these squares permanent observation points are established for bird monitoring. Detailed interpretation of aerial photographs provides the land classification. We tested the relationship between landscape metrics at different levels of land type detail and species richness and abundance of farmland and non-farmland birds. There was a positive relationship between species richness and abundance of farmland birds and agricultural area. For non-farmland birds the relationship was negative. Spatial heterogeneity of land use was a significant positive factor for both farmland and non-farmland species. High land type diversity was positive for farmland bird richness, but negative for abundance. Non-farmland bird richness was not affected by land type diversity, but abundance had a negative response. The results presented in this paper highlight the importance of a spatial heterogeneous landscape. However, we also found that land type diversity could negatively affect the abundance of both farmland and non-farmland birds. Our findings suggest a need for different management approaches depending on whether the aim is increased species richness or abundance. Achieving both aims with the same means might be difficult. We thus suggest a need for land use analyses before proper management strategies can be implemented.  相似文献

A classification tool suitable for establishing the ecological status of lakes based on fish population parameters has been developed for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (EU Water Framework Directive Ecoregion 17). A lake typology relevant to fish populations in lakes from Ecoregion 17 was produced as part of the ecological classification tool development. Four lake types were determined based on fish metrics and abiotic variables from 43 “reference” lakes. The specific lake fish typology categorised lakes into low (≤67 CaCO3 mg L−1) or high (>67 CaCO3 mg L−1) alkalinity, and shallow (≤17 m) or deep (>17 m) maximum depth. The fish in lakes classification tool (FIL2) follows a novel multimetric predictive approach, assigning ecological status to a lake using two independent methods. FIL2 qualitatively defines a lake's ecological status based on fish metrics using discriminant classification rules and, using a generalised linear model, quantitatively derives an Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR, 0 < EQR < 1), along with associated confidence intervals. It is recommended that both methods are used to validate output and cross-check and highlight potential misclassification.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to quantify and decompose the socioeconomic gradient in childhood obesity in the Republic of Ireland. The analysis is performed using data from the first wave of the Growing Up in Ireland survey, a nationally representative survey of 8568 nine-year-old children conducted in 2007 and 2008. We estimate concentration indices to quantify the extent of the socioeconomic gradient in childhood obesity and undertake a subsequent decomposition analysis to pinpoint the key factors underpinning the observed inequalities. Overall the results confirm a strong socioeconomic gradient in childhood obesity in the Republic of Ireland. Concentration indices of obesity (CI = −0.168) and overweight/obese (CI = −0.057) show that the gradient is more pronounced in obese children, while results from the decomposition analysis suggest that the majority of the inequality in childhood obesity is explained by parental level variables. Our findings suggest that addressing childhood obesity inequalities requires coordinated policy responses at both the child and parental level.  相似文献

A non-invasive approach was used to investigate variation in pine marten (Martes martes) abundance between the midlands and east of Ireland, and to determine the frequency of occurrence of squirrels and other small mammals in the diet. Remotely plucked hair samples were genotyped to differentiate between individual animals, and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify predator and prey DNA in scats. Macro analysis of prey remains was carried out on a sub sample of scats and the results from both methods are compared. Non-invasive techniques were successful in determining the presence and relative abundance of the pine marten at woodland level. As expected, abundance was found to be higher in the core population of the midlands than in the east. Pine martens were found to reach higher numbers per km2 of forested habitat in Ireland than their British or European counterparts. Both traditional hard part analysis and molecular dietary analysis of mammalian prey yielded similar results. We provide the first evidence of the European pine marten predating upon the North American grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) in its invasive range. While the grey squirrel was not available as a prey item in any of the midlands sites, it was available in the east, where it featured significantly more frequently in the diet than the native red squirrel. In both the midlands and the east the woodmouse is the most frequently occurring mammal in the diet.  相似文献

Early survival and growth of black alder, silver birch and Scots pine were investigated on reclaimed extremely stony and heterogeneous calcareous (pH 8) opencast oil shale mining areas (OOSMAs). Biomass allocation, production, leaf and root adaptations, and mineral nutrition in relation to tree species and soil heterogeneity were analysed. The adaptive strategies of tree species in first-year plantations on OOSMA were different. Scots pine allocated 1.5–2 times more biomass into leaves and fine roots than deciduous trees. The lower leaf/fine root biomass ratio was in proportion to the better survival (%) of seedlings, decreasing in the following order: black alder (93%)  Scots pine (83%) > silver birch (64%). Deciduous trees improved mineral nutrition more by fine-root morphological adaptations than Scots pine; e.g. the mean specific root length (SRL, m g?1) of short roots increased in the following order: Scots pine (62) < black alder (172) < silver birch (314). The effect of soil heterogeneity on growth and adaptations was minor. All studied species suffered from P and N, and deciduous species also from K deficiency. In the first year after planting, black alder was best adapted to the harsh conditions of the post-mining substrate. The approaches of this study can be used for other regions where wastelands require reclamation.  相似文献

Protected areas (that are usually designated) play an important role in the effort to halt on-going losses of biodiversity. However, areas outside of designated sites for protection can also hold important elements of biodiversity, and knowledge of their distribution is necessary to ensure effective conservation strategies. We collated and mapped vascular plant distribution data for species of conservation concern on the island of Ireland. For the first time in Ireland, we extracted 6078 distribution records of 176 species of conservation concern and mapped them at the tetrad (2 km × 2 km) scale. We examined the extent to which tetrads with records of species of conservation concern overlapped with designated areas (Natura 2000, Natural Heritage Areas, Areas of Special Scientific Interest). A conservative estimate suggests that many of these tetrads do not overlap with designated areas (in the range of 22–40% for available records). The coincidence of records of individual species with designated areas ranged from 0% to 100% (mean = 79%). The mapped distribution data for all vascular plant species offers guidance to where additional recording may be helpful in supporting conservation activities. The analysis of the distribution of species of conservation concern indicates the importance of both designated areas and the (non-designated) wider countryside for biodiversity conservation. In particular the presence of species of conservation concern in non-designated areas highlights the need for conservation measures outside of designated areas.  相似文献

Disturbance regimes and forests have changed over time in the eastern United States. We examined effects of historical disturbance (circa 1813 to 1850) compared to current disturbance (circa 2004 to 2008) on aboveground, live tree biomass (for trees with diameters ≥13 cm) and landscape variation of biomass in forests of the Ozarks and Plains landscapes in Missouri, USA. We simulated 10,000 one-hectare plots using random diameters generated from parameters of diameter distributions limited to diameters ≥13 cm and random densities generated from density estimates. Area-weighted mean biomass density (Mg/ha) for historical forests averaged 116 Mg/ha, ranging from 54 Mg/ha to 357 Mg/ha by small scale ecological subsections within Missouri landscapes. Area-weighted mean biomass density for current forests averaged 82 Mg/ha, ranging from 66 Mg/ha to 144 Mg/ha by ecological subsection for currently forested land. Biomass density of current forest was greater than historical biomass density for only 2 of 23 ecological subsections. Current carbon sequestration of 292 TgC on 7 million ha of forested land is less than half of the estimated historical total carbon sequestration of 693 TgC on 12 million ha. Cumulative tree cutting disturbances over time have produced forests that have less aboveground tree biomass and are uniform in biomass compared to estimates of historical biomass, which varied across Missouri landscapes. With continued relatively low rates of forest disturbance, current biomass per ha will likely increase to historical levels as the most competitive trees become larger in size and mean number of trees per ha decreases due to competition and self-thinning. Restoration of large diameter structure and forested extent of upland woodlands and floodplain forests could fulfill multiple conservation objectives, including carbon sequestration.  相似文献

A statistically significant association was found between the concentration of total microcystin, a common class of cyanotoxins, in surface waters of lakes and reservoirs in the continental U.S. with watershed land use using data from 1156 water bodies sampled between May and October 2007 as part of the USEPA National Lakes Assessment. Nearly two thirds (65.8%) of the samples with microcystin concentrations ≥1.0 μg/L (n = 126) were limited to three nutrient and water quality-based ecoregions (Corn Belt and Northern Great Plains, Mostly Glaciated Dairy Region, South Central Cultivated Great Plains) in watersheds with strong agricultural influence. canonical correlation analysis (CCA) indicated that both microcystin concentrations and cyanobacteria abundance were positively correlated with total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, and temperature; correlations with total phosphorus and water clarity were not as strong. This study supports a number of regional lake studies that suggest that land use practices are related to cyanobacteria abundance, and extends the potential impacts of agricultural land use in watersheds to include the production of cyanotoxins in lakes.  相似文献

A classification approach was developed within the European Water Framework Directive for the outer coastal waters of the German Baltic Sea. We concentrated on the known recent presence and depth distribution of Zostera marina and Fucus vesiculosus along the German coast. According to the European Water Framework Directive the reference conditions were reconstructed based on historical data. The available databases indicate that both species formerly occurred down to 10 m depth along the whole German Baltic Sea coastline, independent on the salinity gradient. The recent depth distribution of Z. marina varied between 2.5 and 7.9 m along the German Baltic coast. Dense F. vesiculosus stands were observed only along the western part of this coast at a maximum depth of 4.7 m. Comparing the historical data sets with recent findings reveals a strong decline of depth limits for both species during the last century. Therefore, we used both species to describe the degradation of the Baltic Sea coastal waters using change in the depth distribution. The boundaries of the ecological status according to the Water Framework Directive were calculated based on modelling. Ecophysiological light demands of species and decrease of water transparency (light reduction in percent) were used to describe the degradations. This approach is robust against variation of macrophyte light requirements and is straightforward to classify recent long-term macrophyte monitoring. However, it is very sensitive against changes in the depth distribution and may result in erroneous estimations of ecological class boundaries when insufficient historical data are used as reference. This model allows the adaption of the boundaries calculations to new knowledge about historical data and ecophysiological light demand of plants. Actually, the boundaries of the classification were defined as follows: 1% light reduction represents the transition from high/pristine to good ecological status, and 5% indicates the transition from good to moderate status. At least 25% reduction corresponds to a poor status, more than 75% to a bad status.  相似文献

The spatial ecology of Africa lions (Panthera leo) was studied from 2007 to 2009 in Waza National Park, Cameroon, by equipping individual lions with GPS/VHF radio-collars. Mean home range estimates using 100% minimum convex polygons (MCP) and 95% kernel-density estimation (KDE) were respectively 1015 km2 and 641 km2. The lions spent a considerable amount of time out of the park during the study period (21%), resulting in significantly larger wet season home ranges than in the hot dry season when they were largely within the park. Time spent outside of the park coincided with increased livestock predation, especially by males. The seasonal variation observed in home range appeared to be mainly due to prey dispersal, flooding and migrating livestock. Mean home range size was observed to have increased by 58.6% within the last decade. This observed increase in home range could possibly be attributed to recent declines in wild prey abundance and also, may be indicative of a trend of general degradation of the park due to intense human pressure. The change observed in lions’ ranging behaviour was remarkable, with lions crossing the highway parallel to the park to the Cameroon-Nigerian borders. Measures to restore the integrity of the park are urgently needed, which could include the construction of a partial fence along the western boundary of the park to prevent lions moving across the parallel highway.  相似文献
