Seasonal changes in the species composition, abundance and biomass of planktonic ciliates were determined every 2–3 weeks at two sites of 30 m depth and one location of 105 m depth in the southwestern Gdańsk Basin between January 1987 and January 1988. A total of 40 ciliate taxa were observed during this period. Autotrophic Mesodinium rubrum dominated ciliate abundance and biomass: maximal values of 50 · 10−1 ind. 1-1 and 65 μg C 1−1 were recorded. The annual mean biomass of M. rubrum comprised 6 to 9% of the annual mean phytoplankton biomass. The highest abundances and biomasses of heterotrophic ciliates were noted at all stations in the spring and summer in the euphotic zone with maximum values of 28 · 103 ind. 1−1 and 23 μg C 1−1. Three ciliates assemblages were distinguished in the epipelagic layer: large and medium-size non-predatory ciliates, achieving peak abundance in spring and autumn; small-size microphagous ciliates and epibiotic ciliates which were abundant in summer, and large-size predacious ciliates dominating in spring. Below 60 m, a separate deep-water ciliate community composed of Prorodon-like ciliates and Metacystis spp. was found. The ciliate biomass in the 60–105 m layer was similar to the ciliate biomass in the euphotic zone. The heterotrophic ciliate community contributed 10 to 13% to the annual mean zooplankton biomass. The potential annual production of M. rubrum comprised 6 to 9% of the total primary production. Carbon demand of non-predatory ciliates, calculated on the basis of their potential production, was estimated to be equivalent to 12–15% of the gross primary production.  相似文献

The numerical abundance of peritrich ciliates epizoic on larvae of Brachycentrus subnubilus in an English chalk stream is described for an 18-month period. Peaks in the epizoic population occurred during winter at a time when protozoan populations in other stream habitats were low. Ciliates were absent from the first three instars of their host, but were abundant on fourth and fifth instar larvae. Estimates of generation times in the field were made for the ciliate populations (January – February 186 h; July – August 471 h). The relative importance of the epizoic ciliate population as a whole is considered in relation to other protozoan populations in the streams.  相似文献

In New Zealand, around half of the lowland water bodies do not meet water quality standards, primarily due to widespread changes in land use. Riparian restoration has been occurring in New Zealand for over 30 years in an effort to minimize this impact, however, little monitoring of restoration effectiveness has been undertaken. This study evaluated the impact of riparian plantings on water quality of lowland streams in the Lake Ellesmere catchment. A paired‐catchment design on four river reaches was used to compare restored riparian buffers with control sites upstream. Chemical water quality sampling was used in conjunction with a macroinvertebrate community assessment. Equivocal benefits of riparian restoration were observed, with improvements in some variables but not in others. Riparian restoration had a positive effect on water quality in terms of increasing dissolved oxygen and decreasing turbidity. However, conductivity increased at planted sites and no changes were observed in other variables. These findings may be affected by the insufficient width of all four buffers, and gaps in the buffer system contributing to poor water quality. Although variable responses were seen in invertebrate community composition, this research suggests that even narrow planted buffer strips may be effective in improving some water quality parameters. The overall mixed results present a fair assessment of the benefits of riparian restoration that may be expected within a relatively short time following vegetation establishment. Even when no baseline data have been established prior to restoration, this research showed monitoring can demonstrate the effectiveness of riparian restoration.  相似文献

Riparian zones associated with alluvial rivers are spatially dynamic, forming distinct vegetative mosaics that exhibit sharp contrasts in structure and processes related to the underlying biophysical template. The productivity of riparian plants, especially trees, influences streamside community characteristics as well as the forms and fluxes of organic matter to adjacent streams – thereby strongly impacting patterns of channel morphology, water flow, sedimentation, and habitat in rivers. As part of a comprehensive investigation of riparian dynamics in coastal rain forest rivers of the Pacific Northwest (USA), we examined riparian tree abundance (density, basal area, and biomass) and rates of production (basal area growth [BAI] and bole wood biomass increase [P]) of seven common species – red alder (Alnus rubra), Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa), vine maple (Acer circinatum) and willow (Salix spp.) – in the lowland floodplain of the Queets River (Olympic National Park), Washington. Measurements were made annually for three years (1999 – 2001) in 16 permanent plots on three biophysical templates that formed a toposequence – active floodplain, young terrace and mature terrace. Stem density was highest in the active floodplain (∼27,000 stems/ ha), decreasing in the young terrace (∼2,700 stems /ha) and the mature terrace (∼500 stems/ha). Basal area and total stem biomass were lowest in the active floodplain (∼16 m2/ha and ∼18 Mg dry weight/ha, respectively) and higher on the young terrace (∼32 m2/ha and ∼134 Mg dry weight/ha) and on the mature terrace (∼69 m2/ha and ∼540 Mg dry weight /ha). Total plot-scale BAI was not significantly different among the physical templates with mean values ranging from approximately 1.4 (low terrace) to approximately 2.8 m2/ha/y (active floodplain). In contrast, P was significantly higher on the mature terrace (10.3 Mg/ha) than the active floodplain (3.2 Mg/ha) but there was no significant difference between young terrace (6.5 Mg/ha) and mature terrace. For the entire Queets River floodplain (57 km2 over 77 km of river length), the mature terrace contributed 81% of the total annual production (28,764 Mg) whereas the active floodplain and young terrace accounted only for 5 and 14%, respectively. Overall, we show that riparian trees grow quickly in this coastal Pacific Northwest system and that the older riparian forests on mature terraces are the main contributors to stem production at the plot and floodplain scales for at least 350 years after stand initiation. This suggests that, in combination with the rapid lateral migrations of many alluvial rivers, the older riparian forests on those terraces are important and sustained sources of organic matter (especially large woody debris, LWD) that, over decades to centuries, shape the character of coastal rivers in the Pacific Northwest.  相似文献

We studied the composition, distribution and dynamics of ciliated protozoan communities as well as their relationships with the physical-chemical characteristics of their environment in the River Henares (Central Spain).A total of 67 species belonging to 54 genera were identified. Thirty-four species were subjected to statistical treatment using absence-presence data. Principal component analysis reduced the number of variables to two factors which accounted for 84.73% of total variance. The first axis grouped non-conservative variables, which strongly depended on biological activity. This axis was identified with nutrient status and pollution level. In contrast, the second factor included conservative variables, poorly influenced by the activity of organisms. This axis was identified with the water mineral content. From the arrangement of different species of ciliates with regard to these two factors, and using non-hierarchic cluster analysis, we established three different groups with respect to each factor.The saprobiological characterization of the different sampling points indicated that three different stretches can be distinguished in all seasons, and we propose some tentative relationshps between chemical and biological variables which characterize the different levels of saprobity in this river.  相似文献

报道了岳麓山部分水域春季纤毛虫种类共24种,分别隶属9目,17属;裸口属等5属是所调查的3种水体中的优势类群;前口虫属等4属为常见类群;旋口虫属是偶见类群.并分析了温度、pH值对部分水域纤毛虫种类组成的影响.13℃是纤毛虫类生活的下限温度;俏裸口虫、大草履是水体中的广温性种类;猎半眉虫等是狭高温性种类.水体pH值为7时,叶绿尖毛虫等可见,为嗜中性种类;圆形半眉虫等只在pH为6.5的水中采到,为嗜酸性种类;俏裸口等在pH6.5~7的水中均可采到,可视为耐受pH范围广的种类.各水体由于污染物种类不同,优势种组成也不一样,通过与Fjerding制订的污水指示生物中的原生动物相对照,所采集到的3种水体均已达到多污和强中污程度,应引起相关部门的高度重视.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to investigate the diet and relative abundance of fruit bats in a lowland Malaysian rain forest and to test the hypothesis that the local assemblage structure of fruit bats varies significantly over time in relation to the availability of food. In total, 352 fruit bats of eight species were captured during 72,306 m2 mist‐net hours of sampling between February 1996 and September 1999. Three species of fruit bats (Balionycteris maculita, Chironax melanocephalus, and Cynopterus brachyotis) that fed on a wide range of “steady state” and “big bang” food resources were captured continuously throughout the study period, with no significant variation in capture rates over time. In contrast, five species that fed exclusively or almost exclusively on “big bang” food resources were sampled intermittently, with significant temporal variation in the capture rates of two species (Cynopterus horsfieldi and Megaerops ecaudatus). Significant variation in the capture rates of the remaining three species (Dyacopterus spadiceus, Eonycteris spelaea, and Rousettus amplexicaudatus) could not be detected due to small sample sizes. Since ephemeral “big bang” food resources were only sporadically available within the study area and were associated with large canopy trees and strangler figs, these results suggest that food abundance, or the availability of specific food items, may be important factors limiting local fruit bat species diversity in old‐growth Paleotropical rain forest. Thus, only three fruit bat species were locally resident within the forest throughout the study period. Therefore, further studies on the ranging behavior and habitat requirements of Malaysian fruit bats are required to assess the adequacy of existing reserves and protected areas.  相似文献

The densities and biomass of ciliates inhabiting the water-sediment interface and the water column of an experimental ricefield were investigated throughout four annual cycles. Ciliate abundance and biomass were higher at the water-sediment interface than in the water column. In both sites, large ciliates (> 105μm3) contributed the higher biomass values, but the highest densities were found in the intermediate size class (104-105μm3). The prorodontid Coleps hirtus dominated the ciliate assemblage and usually comprised > 50% of total ciliate density. Blooms of C. hirtus , occurred in June in the water column and in July at the sediment surface. During the four cycles of rice cultivation, the average daily values for production of the entire ciliate community was 69.6 mgC/m2/d, and the net production efficiency (K2) was 72.0%. The estimated production values in the present study are high if compared to production measured for ciliates in other freshwater ecosystems.  相似文献

A freshwater reservoir was dammed from the Baltic Sea in 1965. The recent sediments and the processes of accumulation in the reservoir have been investigated. The physical, chemical and diatom analyses of the sediments were carried out at 5 sampling points in order to dinstinquish the freshwater sediments from the underlying brackish sediments as well as to date the freshwater sediments. The pattern of sedimentation in the reservoir is described on the basis of these results and conclusions are drawn regarding the development of the water body. In interpretating the diatomological and the chemical results from the recent sediments certain common features are highlighted.  相似文献

Rates of bacteria ingestion by interstitial ciliates were estimated and compared to bacterial biomass and production. Investigation was carried out in the hyporheic zone of a lowland stream. FISH was applied to quantitatively determine bacteria within the ciliate's food vacuoles. To estimate bacteria ingestion rates using FISH, we had to strike a new path. When numbers of bacteria in the food vacuoles remains constant with time (bacterial digestion and ingestion are at equilibrium), ingestion rate can be estimated based on the digestion time and the average number of bacteria per cell. Ciliate community was predominantly composed of bacterivorous ciliates. FISH-signals deriving from ingested bacteria were detected in Cinetochilum margaritaceum, 'other small scuticociliates', Pleuronema spp., and Vorticella spp. Ingestion rates for these taxa were 78, 150, 86, and 38 bacteria ind(-1) h(-1), respectively. The grazing impacts on bacterial biomass and carbon production were calculated based on these ingestion rates. Ciliate grazing caused a decrease in bacterial biomass of 0.024% day(-1) and in bacterial carbon production of 1.60%. These findings suggest that interstitial ciliate grazing impact on bacteria biomass and production was too low to represent an important link in the carbon flow of the hyporheic zone under study.  相似文献

The Saguenay Fjord is characterized by very high run-offs. The annual flow varies between 1.2 and 4.2 × 103 m3 . s−1. During the summer the surface salinity shows a sharp horizontal gradient (from 1 0/00 to 20 0/00). The surface phytoplankton, mainly freshwater and even some euryhaline species is submitted to salinity stress. Continuous culture experiments were conducted to study the susceptibility of this freshwater phytoplankton under different salinity conditions. Some pennate diatoms (dominant group) are found as relatively tolerant to salinity. Microflagellates have been found to be resistant to salinity up to 26 0/00. Chlorophyll concentrations and rates of primary production of those organisms are as high as those of the control.  相似文献

The authors evaluated the adaptability of male nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius sinensis) at three salinity levels (0, 5 and 10 psu) by comparing nest building success rates with nest structures. Successful nest building decreased as salinity increased. In addition, nests built in fresh water (i.e., 0 psu) were glued together, whereas those built in brackish water (5 and 10 psu) broke easily and fell from the nest site to the gravel bottom. Based on these findings, the authors suggest that P. sinensis adapts to freshwater environments.  相似文献

Freshwater macroinvertebrates play key ecological roles in riverine food webs, such as the transfer of nutrients to consumers and decomposition of organic matter. Although local habitat quality drives macroinvertebrate diversity and abundance, little is known about their microbiota. In most animals, the microbiota provides benefits, such as increasing the rate at which nutrients are metabolized, facilitating immune system development, and defending against pathogenic attack. Our objectives were to identify the bacteria within aquatic invertebrates and determine whether their composition varied with taxonomy, habitat, diet, and time of sample collection. In 2016 and 2017, we collected 264 aquatic invertebrates from the mainstem Saint John (Wolastoq) River in New Brunswick, Canada, representing 15 orders. We then amplified the V3‐V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene within each individual, which revealed nearly 20,000 bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The microbiota across all aquatic invertebrates were dominated by Proteobacteria (69.25% of the total sequence reads), but they differed significantly in beta diversity, both among host invertebrate taxa (genus‐, family‐, and order‐levels) and temporally. In contrast to previous work, we observed no microbiota differences among functional feeding groups or traditional feeding habits, and neither water velocity nor microhabitat type structured microbiota variability. Our findings suggest that host invertebrate taxonomy was the most important factor in modulating the composition of the microbiota, likely through a combination of vertical and horizontal bacterial transmission, and evolutionary processes. This is one of the most comprehensive studies of freshwater invertebrate microbiota to date, and it underscores the need for future studies of invertebrate microbiota evolution and linkages to environmental bacteria and physico‐chemical conditions.  相似文献

The selection of one or more river substrata for the collection of benthic diatoms is fundamental to any monitoring or research programme because it can potentially bias the diatom data set. In the wet/dry tropics of Australia, where the use of benthic diatoms for river health assessment is in its infancy, the comparability of diatom assemblages on river substrata has been assessed. Benthic diatoms were sampled from seven river sites, with a range of ionic chemistries (conductivities 27–6500 μS cm−1) but low nutrient concentrations. At each site, triplicate samples were collected from 3 to 6 substrata. The diatom assemblages sampled were: epilithon (assemblages on rock), epiphytes on macroalgae and macrophytes, epidendron (assemblages on wood), epipsammon (assemblages on sand), epipelon (assemblages on mud) and bacterial slime. The variability between substrate assemblages, at each site, were assessed according to the following: (1) a multivariate analysis of diatom assemblages, (2) ANOVA tests of species richness, (3) ANOVA tests of the relative abundance of common species (defined by an abundance of at least 10% in any one sample), and (4) a comparison of the number of species unique to a substrate. A total of 198 taxa were identified, with some taxa common to temperate Australia. Common species were found on all substrata, with sometimes statistically significantly different relative abundances. Taxa unique to a substrate had low relative abundances (0.1–2%), were most often found on only one replicate, and are unlikely to be substrate specific because many are known to occur on other substrata. The assemblages on hard substrata, epilithon and epidendron, were found to be most similar. Diatom assemblages on macroalgal and macrophyte substrata, compared to other substrata, were highly variable. This is attributed to the loss of diatoms from grazing and sloughing, followed by recolonisation of newly exposed substrate. Other assemblages, notably epipsammon, were similar to epilithon and epidendron but sometimes differed in their relative abundance of common species. The principal finding of the study was the similarity of the epilithon and epidendron, which are considered to be indistinguishable. Rock and wood hard substrata can be substituted for one another during field surveys, thereby increasing the number of potential sample sites available for monitoring activities that standardise to a hard substrate.  相似文献

Plant litter decomposition is an essential ecosystem function that contributes to carbon and nutrient cycling in streams. Aquatic shredders, mainly macroinvertebrates, can affect this process in various ways; they consume leaf litter, breaking it down into fragments and creating suitable habitats or resources for other organisms through the production of fine particulate organic matter (FPOM). However, measures of litter‐feeding traits across a wide range of aquatic macroinvertebrates are still rare. Here, we assessed the contributions of 11 species of freshwater macroinvertebrates to litter decomposition, by measuring consumption rate, FPOM production, and assimilation rate of highly decomposable (Alnus glutinosa) or poorly decomposable (Quercus robur) leaf litter types. In general, an increase in the quality of litter improved the litter consumption rate, and fungal conditioning of the leaf litter increased both the litter consumption rate and FPOM production. Macroinvertebrates specializing in leaf litter consumption also appeared to be the most sensitive to shifts in litter quality and the conditioning process. Contrary to expectations, the conditioning process did not increase the assimilation of low‐quality litter. There was a strong correlation between the relative consumption rate (RCR) of the two litter types, and the relative FPOM production (RFP) was strongly correlated to the RCR. These findings suggest a consistent relationship between RCR and macroinvertebrate identity that is not affected by litter quality, and that the RFP could be inferred from the RCR. The varying responses of the macroinvertebrate feeding traits to litter quality and the conditioning process suggest that the replacement of a shredder invertebrate species by another species could have major consequences for the decomposition process and the detritus‐based food web in streams. Further studies onto the importance of invertebrate identity and the effects of litter quality in a variety of freshwater ecosystems are needed to understand the whole ecosystem functioning and to predict its response to environmental changes.  相似文献

The impact of projected increases in urbanization on ecosystem services   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Alteration in land use is likely to be a major driver of changes in the distribution of ecosystem services before 2050. In Europe, urbanization will probably be the main cause of land-use change. This increase in urbanization will result in spatial shifts in both supplies of ecosystem services and the beneficiaries of those services; the net outcome of such shifts remains to be determined. Here, we model changes in urban land cover in Britain based on large (16%) projected increases in the human population by 2031, and the consequences for three different services--flood mitigation, agricultural production and carbon storage. We show that under a scenario of densification of urban areas, the combined effect of increasing population and loss of permeable surfaces is likely to result in 1.7 million people living within 1 km of rivers with at least 10 per cent increases in projected peak flows, but that increasing suburban 'sprawl' will have little effect on flood mitigation services. Conversely, losses of stored carbon and agricultural production are over three times as high under the sprawl as under the 'densification' urban growth scenarios. Our results illustrate the challenges of meeting, but also of predicting, future demands and patterns of ecosystem services in the face of increasing urbanization.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of selected protozoa on the degradation and concentration of chitin and the numbers of fungal zoospores in the rumen fluid of sheep. Three adult ewes were fed a hay-concentrate diet, defaunated, then monofaunated with Entodinium caudatum or Diploplastron affine alone and refaunated with natural rumen fauna. The average density of the protozoa population varied from 6.1 · 104 (D. affine) to 42.2 · 104 cells/ml rumen fluid (natural rumen fauna). The inoculation of protozoa in the rumen of defaunated sheep increased the total activity of chitinolytic enzymes from 2.9 to 3.6 μmol N-acetylglucosamine/g dry matter (DM) of rumen fluid per min, the chitin concentration from 6.3 to 7.2 mg/g DM of rumen fluid and the number of fungal zoospores from 8.1 to 10.9 · 105 cells/ml rumen fluid. All examined indices showed diurnal variations. Ciliate population density was highest immediately prior to feeding and lowest at 4 h thereafter. The opposite effects were observed for the numbers of fungal zoospores, the chitin concentration and chitinolytic activity. Furthermore, it was found that chitin from zoospores may account for up to 95% of total microbial chitin in the rumen fluid of sheep. In summary, the examined ciliate species showed the ability of chitin degradation as well as a positive influence on the development of the ruminal fungal population.  相似文献
