Changes in the numbers of all stages of Heterodera rostochiensis in plants and soil were studied in a potato crop growing on infected land. Hatching and invasion occurred early in the season, when plants were very young and temperatures were below those considered necessary for hatching and invasion in Long Island, U.S.A. More larvae hatched from cysts nearer than away from potato roots. Males were abundant during June and July, when fertilization probably occurs. Many new cysts appeared during late June and early July. In May/June, there were many larvae in the roots of young plants but later there were few; a slight increase during August probably indicated a small second generation. The larvae for this second invasion may have come from the most recently formed cysts, which may have been stimulated to hatch either by root exudates or by substances from other soil organisms.  相似文献

Comparisons are made between the population dynamics of potato cyst nematode and root growth of Pentland Crown and Maris Piper potato cultivars. Large changes in the number of eggs occurred to a depth of 48 cm, particularly in a peaty loam and in plots treated with oxamyl. Oxamyl delayed the hatch of eggs in the peaty loam but not in the sandy loam, giving the protected plants several weeks without invasion damage during which they became bigger with their roots better established deeper in the soil. Oxamyl killed or impaired the movement of second stage juveniles but appeared to have little systemic activity to hinder juvenile development within roots.  相似文献

Moisture content, pore size, depth and oxygen consumption in the soil, which influence soil aeration, have been studied in relation to larval emergence from cysts of the beet eelworm. Experiments show that the rate of larval emergence increases with aeration. In studies of larval emergence in the field emphasis should be laid on soil structure rather than on a mechanical analysis. Those factors associated with good soil tilth favour high rates of larval emergence.  相似文献

Observations on the invasion and development of Heterodera avenae in relation to take-all infection of barley roots were made in three pot experiments. Post-cropping H. avenae populations were lower on fungus-infected plants, as a result of the production of fewer, smaller and less fecund cysts. The reduction in cyst numbers was associated with reduced larval invasion of take-all infected roots and with the effects of the unfavourable environment of these roots on female development, possibly through its effects on sex determination and survival of the larvae.  相似文献

The significance of soil moisture in relation to aeration and larval emergence from cysts of Heterodera schachtii Schmidt is discussed. The rate of larval emergence increased as oxygen concentration increased. A comparison of the moisture characteristics of a mass of cysts and of sand of about the same particle size showed that water was removed from between both the cysts and the sand particles at 12–16 cm. of water-pressure deficiency. There was an indication that water was removed from between the eggs within the cysts at 100–135 cm - of water-pressure deficiency. The rate of larval emergence showed a gradual decline is suction was increased beyond 20 cm. of water-pressure deficiency, approaching zero at 175 cm. of water-pressure deficiency. Results suggest that egg hatch is not directly dependent on pressure deficiency and that the presence of free larvae within the cyst inhibits further egg hatch. A technique is described for measuring larval motility in sand. There is a decline in motility when most of the water has been removed from the sand pore-spaces. It is suggested that the relatively low rates of larval emergence at high-pressure deficiencies are due to inhibition of larval migration from the cyst by the surface forces of the water film.  相似文献

The efficacy of Metarhizium anisopliae DAT F-001 against Adoryphorus couloni was examined over 4 years on a sheep grazing property ('Inverell') in central Tasmania. Three generations of the primary A. couloni population and two generations of the overlapping population were studied. Application of 5.1 0.7 104 M. anisopliae spores g-1 of soil (2 cm below the soil surface), during midwinter 1989, when the primary population was in the middle of the L3 larval stage, resulted in 30.3% fewer larvae in treated plots by 21 weeks and 57.8% less pupae by 27 weeks. The population decline was consistent with a mortality model developed from laboratory data. In the two subsequent generations of the primary population, there were 63.2% (1991) and 45.0% (1993) fewer larvae in the treated plots before the damaging L3 stage. The two sequential generations of the overlapping A. couloni larval populations had 68% (1990) and 65% (1992) fewer larvae in the treated plots than in the untreated plots. Reductions in larval numbers led to a greater retention of sown perennial grasses, reduced weed invasion and a 23% increase in pasture productivity in the autumn of 1992. Incorporation of M. anisopliae into the soil did not reduce the numbers of non-target invertebrates. The level of M. anisopliae DAT F-001 in the pasture remained at levels close to the applied concentration (5.1 0.7 colony-forming units g-1 of soil), but increased 10-fold when mummified L3 larval, prepupal and pupal cadavers were present from January to June 1990. The level of the fungus in the soil was still twice the original applied concentration at the conclusion of sampling in March 1992.  相似文献

Techniques for determining the influence of various substances on the rate of larval emergence from cysts of the beet eelworm are described. There is no significant difference between the rates of larval emergence in glutamic acid, galactinol, inositol and water; the rate of larval emergence in beet diffusate, on the other hand, was significantly higher. Studies of larval emergence in carbohydrates suggest that the cyst population used in the experiments was heterogeneous, consisting of two types of cyst which have different reactions to stimulation at different concentrations. The significance of root exudates in relation to beet eelworm is discussed.  相似文献

Survival rate and emergence timing of the overwintering generation of many temperate agricultural pests is expected to affect their population dynamics and damage potential. However the impact of fluctuating winter and spring conditions on the successful emergence of insects post-diapause is generally poorly known. Here we characterize diapause responses in the peach fruit moth (PFM) pest, Carposina sasakii Matsumura, which overwinters at the larval stage in soil. Temperatures at a depth of 5 cm fluctuated markedly in early spring during the critical PFM post-diapause period (late December to mid-April). By removing outdoor larval samples over this period, we show that the completion of diapause for PFM in northern China starts from late January and continues until March. This extended developmental period is accompanied by an ongoing loss of cold resistance. Temperature conditions experienced in the field were associated with cold tolerance and emergence times, and reduced cold tolerance was associated with shorter emergence time. Cryoprotectants declined from late December, and levels were associated with changes in the supercooling point (SCP) of the larvae, but both correlated weakly to survival under cold stress during the post-diapause period. These findings suggest that diapause stage and soil temperatures should be taken into account when predicting field dynamics of soil-dwelling overwintering insects based on degree day accumulation models and other approaches.  相似文献

Samples of root diffusate from sprouts ( Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera ), swedes ( B. napus var. napobrassica ), rape kale ( B. napus var. arvmsis ), and white mustard ( Sinupis alba ), all stimulated larval emergence from cysts of Heterodera cruciferae. When mustard-root diffusate was added to leachings from the other species tested there was no apparent effect on larval emergence. In half dilution with tap water, mustard leachings were comparable in activity with similar dilutions of leachings from the other species under observation. Leachings from soil were less active than those from the four species of plants tested, but showed significant activity in comparison with tap water.
The form of the hatching curve was studied using diffusates from both sprouts and mustard roots, and in each case when cumulative hatch was plotted against time on a logarithmic scale, the sigmoid curve obtained closely fitted the theoretical sigmoid calculated from a probit analysis of the data.
Estimates were obtained of the log activity values of leachings from the four species of plants tested and from soil, following an examination of the dilution curves for mustard and sprouts root diffusates. These curves were closely parallel with one another, and it was therefore considered justifiable to derive log activity values for these root diffusates, although the cysts used in the hatching tests and the root-diffusate samples were each obtained from a single source. For this reason some caution is perhaps called for in the interpretation of the results presented in this paper.  相似文献

Parasitism of the tobacco hornworm, Manducasexta, by the braconid wasp Cotesiacongregata, induces developmental arrest of the host in the larval stage. During the final instar of the host, its juvenile hormone (JH) titer is elevated, preventing host metamorphosis. This study investigated the effects of hormonal manipulation of the host on the parasitoid’s emergence behavior. The second larval ecdysis of the wasps coincides with their emergence from the host, and application of the juvenile hormone analogue methoprene to day 4 fifth instar hosts either delayed or totally suppressed the subsequent emergence of the wasps. Effects of methoprene were dose-dependent and no parasitoids emerged following treatment of host larvae with doses >50 μg. Parasitoids which failed to emerge eventually succumbed as unecydsed pharate third instar larvae in the hemocoel of the host. Effects of host methoprene treatment on parasitoid metamorphosis were also assessed, and metamorphic disruption occurred at much lower dosages compared with doses necessary to suppress parasitoid emergence behavior. The inhibitory effect of methoprene on parasitoid emergence behavior appears to be mediated by effects of this hormone on the synthesis or release of ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH) in the parasitoid, the proximate endocrine cue which triggers ecdysis behavior in free-living insects. ETH accumulated in the epitracheal Inka cells of parasitoids developing in methoprene-treated hosts, suggestive of a lack of hormone release. Thus, the hormonal modulation of parasitoid emergence behavior appears to be complex, involving a suite of hormones including JH, ecdysteroid, and peptide hormones.  相似文献

The biological control potential of an isolate of Pochonia chlamydosporia var. chlamydosporia against Heterodera schachtii was examined by assessing the percentage of females and cysts that became infected on water agar, the effect of culture filtrate on juvenile mobility, and the effects of the fungus on the final population of the nematode on sugar beet under greenhouse conditions. After 3 weeks at 20°C, 74 and 95% of the eggs within cysts and females, respectively, were colonised by the fungus on water agar. The full concentration of the fungal filtrate from cultures in malt extract broth killed only 12% of the juveniles after 24 h at 25°C. In the greenhouse experiment, adding 16,000 chlamydospores of the fungus per gram of soil as either colonised barley grains or spores reduced the final number of females on roots of sugar beet by 50 and 66%, respectively, after 3 months. The reproduction factor was reduced to ×2 in spore-treated soil compared with ×5 in the untreated control, and 18% of the eggs in spore-treated soil were colonised by fungal mycelium. Generally, P. chlamydosporia var. chlamydosporia was more efficient at reducing the nematode population when applied as spores without any substrate than when used as colonised barley grains.  相似文献

High initial population densities of Heterodera schachtii larvae (36 and 108/gm of soil) greatly retarded the seedling emergence of sugar beet ''Monogerm CSF 1971'' in Vineland fine sandy loam. In comparison with controls, initial population densities (Pi''s) of 1.7, 3.0, 6.2, and 14.4 larvae/gm of soil respectively reduced the weight of storage roots by 38, 56, 64, and 92%. Weights of tops also decreased with increases in Pi; weights of tap and small feeder roots tended to be higher at all Pi''s except the highest. Sucrose percentage was not affected by any initial nematode density. The populations were lower at midseason than at seeding, and at harvest had increased greatly, with respective populations of 339, 402, 222, and 140 larvae/gm of soil. At harvest, cysts/gm of soil and cysts/gm of root were respectively 4.4 and 72, 6.1 and 99, 6.1 and 191, and 5.8 and 140. The maximum rate of multiplication was 150-200. and maximum density was 400 larvae/gm of soil. The high pathogenicity and multiplication rate of the nematode was attributed to optimum temperature conditions and soil type.  相似文献

Movement of potato root diffusate (PRD) through soil was examined by using the hatch of eggs from Globodera rostochiensis cysts as an indicator. Porous bags containing cysts were placed at increasing distances and depths from potato roots, whose growth was restricted by nylon mesh. Significantly greater hatch was observed up to 50 cm laterally away from potato roots, compared with hatch in fallow soil. Eight weeks after plant emergence, we detected a concentration gradient of PRD, as measured by egg hatch, that decreased with increasing lateral and vertical distance from the root zone. Egg hatch beyond 5 weeks after plant emergence was not attributed to PRD.  相似文献

The efficacy of aldicarb, carboturan and phorate nematicides on the control of wilt disease complex involving Fnsarium udum was studied in pot culture. The two pathogens interacted synergistically. The severity of the disease complex was significantly reduced at all the dosages of these nematicides but the greatest reduction occurred at the highest dosage (20 mg a. i. Kg soil). The final total population of H. cajani was significantly reduced by F. udum as well as by these nematicides. These nematicides adversely affected not only the developmental stages of nematode resulting in a significant increase in 3rd—4th stage juveniles and decrease in 2nd stage juveniles, adults and cysts, even impeded the fecundity of the nematode.  相似文献

The life cycle of Globodera rostochiensis pathotype Ro1 was studied under experimental conditions on selected potato cultivars (Korela, Albina, Vivaldi, Veronika, Vera, Monalisa, Victoria, Maranca, Désirée) in Slovakia during two growing seasons. Two peaks of second stage juveniles (J2) were found in the soil; the first peak three and four weeks after planting in the first and second year, respectively. The last J2 were found on 23 September. The number of J2 found in the second peak was much higher. First J2 associated with roots were observed 18 days, on middle early and seritonous cultivars 34 days after planting, but fourth stage juveniles (J4) were observed 40 days after planting in both cultivar groups. First adult males were found in soil 43 and 46 days after planting, respectively, and the last males two weeks later. White females filled with eggs were observed on roots 61 days after planting. The cycle from hatching of J2 in the soil to the hatching of J2 from brown cysts required 68 days in the first year and 60 days in the second year.  相似文献

Black vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus (F.), is a severe pest of small fruit and nursery crops around the world. These studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of three species of entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis marelatus, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, and Steinernema riobrave) applied in infected host cadavers or as aqueous applications for black vine weevil larval control. Experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and outdoors. Application of three infected host cadavers or 40 infective juvenile nematodes (IJs) /cm2 were made to pots of Impatiens walleriana 5-7 d after larval infestation. Efficacy was assessed at 14 d in the greenhouse and at 14 and 28 d after nematode application in outdoor trials. In the greenhouse, all treatments with the exception the S. riobrave (cadaver and aqueous applications) provided nearly 100% efficacy after 14 d. The S. riobrave applications, although significantly better than the control, only provided 40-70% control and were not included in the outdoor trials. Nematode efficacy was slowed in the outdoor trials particularly in the cadaver applications. In the initial outdoor trial (soil temperatures < 12 degrees C), there were no significant differences between any nematode treatment and the control after 14 d. The nematode efficacy in the initial outdoor trial after 28 d was improved from the 14-d evaluation but not to the level seen in the second trial. In the second outdoor trial, in which soil temperatures were higher (> 12 degrees C), the aqueous applications of H. marelatus and H. bacteriophora provided nearly complete control after 14 d. The cadaver applications also provided nearly complete control in the second outdoor trial after 28 d. Even though the potential total number of IJs estimated per pot was higher in the cadaver-applied treatments, cool soil temperatures apparently delayed or potentially reduced IJ emergence from cadavers resulting in delayed control.  相似文献

In the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday, the incidence of diapause around the critical photoperiod was dependent on temperature. At a photoperiod of 12 h light:12 h dark, a significantly higher proportion of diapausing individuals was found at 12 degrees C than at 15 degrees C. The second larval stage of the parasitoid was most sensitive to photoperiod and localised-illumination experiments showed that the parasitoid responded independently of the aphid host. The sex ratio of the population which emerged after rearing in short-days and/or after diapause was male biased. Topical application of the juvenile hormone-mimic, pyriproxyfen, before or during diapause delayed emergence of Aphidius ervi but did not induce diapause or influence its termination. The ecdysteroid mimic RH 5849 induced diapause in a few treated individuals but did not affect diapause termination.  相似文献

Abstract: The western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, Col.; Chrysomelidae) is an alien invasive species in Europe. It is a univoltine species with eggs that overwinter in the soil and larvae that hatch in spring. Three larval instars feed on maize roots, which can cause plant lodging and yield loss of economic importance. Adults emerge between mid‐June and early August and can reduce yields through intensive silk feeding. In order to provide a thorough understanding of the population dynamics of this invasive pest species in the invaded European region, complete age specific life‐tables were constructed in two maize fields in southern Hungary assessing the significance of natural mortality factors acting on D. v. virgifera populations. This information provides a rational basis for devising sustainable integrated pest management programmes, in particular, by enabling the identification of vulnerable pest age intervals for the timely application of various management tools. The life‐table for D. v. virgifera in Europe resulted in a total mortality of about 99% from the egg stage in the autumn to the emergence of adult females in the following year (KTotal = 2.48), which is comparable with North America. The highest reduction of D. v. virgifera numbers resulted from the mortality in first instar larvae (94% marginal death rate) and from the unrealized fecundity (80%). However, only the variation in mortality between years can change the generational mortality and thus influence population growth. High variation in the marginal death rate between fields and years was found in the second and third instar larval stages, and in the overwintering egg stage. These mortality factors therefore have the potential to cause changes in the total generational mortality. Furthermore, the life‐table suggested that a high fecundity could compensate for a high generational mortality and would lead to population increase.  相似文献

The nature of resistance in Cucumis ficifolius and C. metuliferus to the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita acrita, was studied under greenhouse conditions. Although as many larvae penetrated the roots of these species as those of the susceptible C. melo, few developed to the adult female stage. Resistance in C. ficifolius and C. metuliferus was associated with hindrance of larval development beyond the second stage, delayed development of larvae to adults and stimulation toward maleness. Tissue necrosis or hypersensitivity was not associated with larval penetration. Comparisons of the histopathology of 26-day-old infections of C. melo and C. metuliferus roots showed no observable differences in the type of giant cell development in regions of roots associated with adult females. However, in C. rnetuliferus immature nematodes were associated with small giant cells which were limited to a few cells near the head of the nematode.  相似文献
