Redd (nest) surveys for resident brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were conducted annually in a mountain lake in northern New York for 11 years with multiple surveys conducted during the spawning season in eight of those years. Repeated surveys throughout the spawning season allowed us to fit an individually based parametric model and estimate the day of year on which spawning was initiated, reached its midpoint, and ended during each year. Spawning phenology was then assessed relative to (1) mean of maximum daily air temperature and (2) mean of maximum daily water temperature at the lake bottom during summer in each year using a linear model. Elevated temperatures in summer were correlated with a delay in spawning and a reduction in the total number of redds constructed. Increasing the summer mean of maximum daily air temperatures by 1 °C delayed spawning by approximately 1 week and decreased the total number of redds constructed by nearly 65. Lake spawning brook trout select redd sites based on the presence of discharging groundwater that is relatively constant in temperature within and across years, leading to relatively consistent egg incubation times. Therefore, delayed spawning is likely to delay fry emergence, which could influence emergence synchrony with prey items. This work highlights non‐lethal and sub‐lethal effects of elevated summer temperatures on native resident salmonids in aquatic environments with limited thermal refugia.  相似文献

Many lake trout Salvelinus namaycush spawn in shallow areas along windswept shores. However, precise determination of time and location of spawning is limited by its nocturnal occurrence, and possibly by some postulated, but unproven, spawning in deep water by certain populations. In White Pine Lake, Ontario, a well-studied experimental lake, lake trout spawn in two shallow locations where some direct observation is possible. Radiotelemetry apparatus was used in 1991 to obtain records of the electromyograms (EMGs) produced by muscle activity in one adult male and one adult female lake trout, captured from the lake before their reproductive period and returned to the lake at the beginning of the spawning period. Both fish survived, though only the male was detected as active over the main spawning site, where it showed evening EMG activity patterns indicating considerable activity. At other times of day, when not located over the spawning site, but present elsewhere in the lake, the male's EMG (i.e. muscle) values were considerably reduced. At the cessation of the spawning period, the transmitter-equipped male's EMG record showed no further pattern indicative of high activity during what had formerly been the daily spawning period. The female was tracked as she moved around the lake, but based on both her location and level of EMG activity, is thought not to have spawned. In 1992, a second male was captured, equipped with a transmitter and released again. This fish failed to show spawning activity but, as with the 1991 female, moved fairly considerable distances in the lake. In one instance, in a swim of short duration (6 min), well away from the spawning grounds, this fish displayed EMG activity levels resembling those of the high activity of spawning. The results obtained appear to demonstrate that EMG telemetry could be used to assess the level of muscular activity occurring in lake trout, especially in relation to reproductive behaviour, and when they cannot be directly observed.  相似文献

Liver and epaxial muscle RNA concentrations and RNA-DNA ratios (RNA/DNA) of bluegill Lepomis macrochirus from a central Tennessee lake were maximum in the spring, low during the summer, high again in the fall, and low during the winter. Liver-somatic indexes and DNA concentrations indicated that liver cell volume and energy storage varied seasonally and were lowest during late spring and summer. Seasonal variations in gonosomatic indexes were typical of this species, and RNA/DNA decreased as gonads matured during the spring. RNA/DNA and energy storage in the liver decreased during the major spawning season. Seasonal variations in food consumption may have effected seasonal growth and energy storage. However, a summer depression in RNA/DNA may have been more closely associated with the effects of thermal stratification and dissolved oxygen stress.  相似文献

Simple correlation and multiple regression analyses were performed to examine the relationship between primary productivity and environmental factors in the north basin of Lake Biwa. The primary production rates used in the analyses were estimated monthly or bimonthly during the growing season (April–November) in 1992, 1996 and 1997 with the 13C method. Elemental (C, N and P) contents of seston were used to assess nutrient conditions. Analyses revealed that 86% of variance in depth-integrated primary production rates (areal PP) can be explained by changes in light intensity, and sestonic C, N and P concentrations. Water temperature had no effect on areal PP. To assess relative effects of light and nutrients on PP, the P:B ratio was estimated by normalizing PP with sestonic C. The areal P:B ratio correlated most significantly with the sestonic N:P ratio, followed by light intensity. When regression analyses were made at each depth, however, the P:B ratio correlated significantly only with the sestonic N:P ratio at 0 and 1 m depths, while light intensity was also incorporated into the regressions at deeper than 2.5 m. In these regressions, the P:B ratio was negatively correlated with sestonic N:P ratio but positively with light intensity. The results suggest that the primary production rate in this lake was mainly limited by P relative to N supply rates, but was not free from light limitation in a large part of the epilimnion. In Lake Biwa, the vertical water mixing regime as well as the nutrient supply seem to be important in determining the growth and composition of primary producers, since the surface mixing layer extends into 10–15 m depths during most of the growing season.  相似文献

Recently developed fluorescence techniques were used to quantify RNA-DNA ratios in white epaxial muscle tissue biopsies taken from live adult brown trout. RNA-DNA ratios from small biopsies (4–24 mg wet weight) were measured concurrently with growth over 5 weeks in two groups of brown trout fed different rations, 5% BW day– 1 (reference) and 1% BW week– 1(treatment). Reduced rations had significant effects on RNA-DNA ratios in muscle tissue biopsies. The treatment group had significantly lower mean RNA–DNA ratios than the reference group after the first week. After 5 weeks of treatment the mean RNA–DNA ratios of the treatment and reference groups were 1–98 and 4–31, respectively. RNA-DNA ratios from muscle tissue biopsies reflected recent growth rates in the two groups of fish. This technique allows a biochemical measurement of growth rates in adult fish without mortality.  相似文献

Studies on the chemical composition of adult pollan were carried out monthly from January to December 1977. Sex, weight of scaled fillet, and gonads were examined in 184 fish. Chemical composition which includes water, fat and ash content was analysed in the whole fish, muscle and gonads. This paper attempts to account for the fat and protein flow within fish of both sexes during gonad maturation. Extreme differences between males and females have been recorded in the fat deposition process during summer and spawning period. In spite of our fragmentary knowledge of spawning behaviour in pollan, an explanation is offered for these phenomena. The changes in fat content of female gonads were followed closely throughout the year and the cost of egg production was estimated as a percentage of the amount of fat deposited in the body. Since a similar growth pattern was found for both sexes of pollan, differences in feeding intensity might account for the difference in energy expenditure. Amino acid content was analysed in muscle and gonads and an Essential Amino Acid Index (EAAI) was calculated. There were some changes in EAAI which depended on sex and season. Finally, a new method for evaluation of muscle production expressed as fat and protein is used to determine the most suitable time for fish harvesting.  相似文献

Several environmental parameters related to the spawning season of the freshwater fish, Psectrogaster rhomboides were identified. The hypothesis predicts synchrony of the spawning season with the rainy period, presenting a seasonal reproductive strategy. This study investigated the total body length and body mass, sex ratio, body size at first sexual maturity, gonadosomatic index, condition factor, fecundity and reproductive period of P. rhomboides in the natural environment. Twelve monthly samplings (mean n = 20) were carried out from March 2009 to February 2010. Fish were captured using 4 cm diameter cast nets and environmental parameters such as rainfall, temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, pH and electrical conductivity of the water were registered. The sampled population of P. rhomboides (n = 444) showed a sex ratio of 1 : 1. Females attained first sexual maturity at 15 cm total length and males at 15.3 cm total length. Spawning occurred from March to May, with high gonadosomatic index values during the rainy season. This species is a total spawner, with a mean fecundity of 6188 (±367) mature oocytes. P. rhomboides presents a seasonal reproductive strategy, providing a population increase and exploitation of the environmental resources during the rainy period. Rainfall (196.5 ± 4.9 mm) and the concentration of dissolved oxygen (7.82 ± 0.7018 mg L?1) were influential factors during the spawning season. Gonadosomatic index and the condition factor were negatively correlated during the gonadal development cycle of this species. The monthly gonadosomatic index values show that spawning begins when the rainy season is at its maximum and ends synchronously (females r = 0.9171; males r = 0.889) with the end of the rainy season.  相似文献

Silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus, were collected by fishing with drift gillnets on one spawning ground in Kuwait waters during 1998–2000. Fish size frequency, sex ratio, maturation cycle, spawning frequency, fecundity and egg weight were assessed. The length–weight relationship differed between sexes whereby females were significantly bigger than males. Spawning started in mid‐May and continued until early October. During this time the water temperature ranged from 26.0 to 32.8°C, salinity was ? 39.0‰ and water depth ranged between 5 and 12 m. Large females spawned earlier than young spawners and the overall percentage of males during the spawning period was 70.3%. Spawning occurred after 13.00 h, with peak spawning between 15.00 and 18.00 hours during outgoing tide. Mean daily spawning frequency amounted to 63.2%. Spawning activity was found to be associated with the lunar cycle and spawnings were concentrated during the first and third quarters of the moon period, indicating a semilunar reproduction cycle. It was concluded that a female would spawn at least six times during the season. No change was observed in relative fecundity during the peak spawning season (June–August). Average relative batch fecundity was 176.3 eggs g?1 somatic weight (SW), corresponding to a relative total fecundity of 1058 eggs g?1 SW, which is 1.5 times higher than estimates obtained from counting the standing stock of oocytes. Bigger fish produced heavier eggs and the egg weight decreased as the spawning season progressed. Based on gonadal cycles, oocyte size frequency distribution and total fecundity, we concluded that silver pomfret is a multiple batch spawner with indeterminate fecundity.  相似文献

The gonadosomatic index of sobaity Sparidentex hasta fits well with the natural spawning season of February-March. At 12 and 24 months all the population matured as males. However, during this time, between April-September intersex gonads were seen. From October of the third year of life, females were seen for the first time. These changes in the histology of the gonads were correlated with the hormonal profile. Testosterone showed no significant correlation with sex but 11-ketotestosterone correlated very well with the mature male gonads and thus can be used for sexing. Oestradiol-17β higher in sex reversed individuals (females) in the spawning season than in males. The sequence of events in the protandrous sex change of this fish during the first two spawning seasons is male → intersex → male. However, during the third spawning season (age 36–37 months) this sequence is male →intersex → male or female (10–17%).  相似文献

One male and one female lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush , were held in a laboratory tank simulating a natural spawning environment. Their behaviour during their reproductive period was videotaped each day for 2 h at dusk. The fish activities were classified into seven types: resting, casual swimming, side-thrusting, chase, chase-nudge, body alignment, shuddering. As the reproductive period progressed the fish became more generally active with a marked increase in interactive behaviours such as pursuit of the female by the male (chasing, chasing-nudging). Around spawning time, shuddering and body alignment activity reached apeak. Each fish was equipped with an internally implanted radiotelemetry package able to detect and transmit continuously over the course of each day signals that reflect production of the electromyograms (EMGs) that accompany fish axial muscle activity (high muscular activity gives low pulse interval times in milliseconds). The lowest EMG pulse intervals corresponded with what, from the video records, appeared to be the time of highest physical activity during the reproductive period–viz. that associated with spawning activity during dusk. Other times during the diel cycles over the reproductive period, except for times of roughly similar duration during early morning (which may also be reflections of spawning) showed considerably lower muscular activity. It is concluded that transmitted EMG records could probably be used as indicators of spawning activity of lake trout in at least some of those places in the field where they cannot normally be located by visual means.  相似文献

A dearth of basic biological information for wahoo, Acanthocybium solandri, currently hinders the ability of scientists and managers to assess population sustainability and appropriately manage the dramatically increasing global catch. This study examined the gonads of 382 wahoo collected off eastern Australia during 2008–2011 to quantify their reproductive biology in the region. The overall sex ratio of the sample was 3.2:1 (females:males), however this differed significantly among fishing sectors and areas. The estimated fork length at which 50 % of female wahoo reach maturity was 1,046 mm. Similar to the Atlantic Ocean, female wahoo have a protracted summer spawning season during October-February. The mean spawning frequency of female wahoo was uncertain but may be approximately 2–3 days, with evidence of fish actively spawning on consecutive days. Batch fecundity of females was positively correlated with fish size and estimates ranged between 0.65 and 5.12 million oocytes. Relative fecundity was estimated at 122.0 (±9.7) oocytes per gram of ovary free body weight and did not differ with fish size or throughout the spawning season. Estimation of reproductive parameters such as size- and age-at-maturity may facilitate the construction of per-recruit stock assessments of wahoo in the region.  相似文献

Blocked riverine spawning migration routes constitute one of the main threats of potamodromous fish that require well-connected habitats of high quality to maintain their unique life-history form. Alburnus vistonicus, a potamodromous species inhabiting the Vistonis freshwater system in northern Greece, manages to cope with wide salinity fluctuations in Vistonis Lake, but the impact of the fragmented connectivity of the lake’s two main freshwater suppliers, Kosynthos and Kompsatos rivers, has not been assessed. We analyzed the species whole reproductive cycle and we divided it into phases. Cyclicity was observed in gonadosomatic index and oocyte diameter, while total fecundity remained constant prior to the onset of the spawning season. Stomach fullness and condition factor differed among the surveyed habitats. Successful spawning and multiple spawning were verified, as well as spawning migration and potamodromy. However, mature females with markers of recent spawning activity were captured also in the lake, suggesting spawning occurrence in the lake or a previously undocumented oscillatory behavior between the lake and the rivers during the spawning season and between sequential spawning events. Either behavior may serve as a mechanism to overcome the restricted spawning migration routes due to the fragmented river connectivity.

The number of eggs spawned by female three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus (L.) was highly correlated with the size of the fish expressed either as total length or as weight after spawning. There were no significant correlations between the size of the eggs measured either as wet weight per egg or as dry weight per egg, and the size of the fish. Nor were there significant correlations between the calorific value of the eggs and the length or weight of the fish. Regressions relating egg production to the length and the weight of the fish are given. These results and an analysis of previous studies on the fecundity of the stickleback suggest that variations in fecundity are primarily a reflection of variation in the size of the fish at maturity, and that this size is related to the race of the stickleback and to environmental conditions such as food supply which influence the growth of sticklebacks.  相似文献

Reproductive effort and efficiency are terms which together help to describe the reproductive investment of spawning fish. In this paper they are applied to a small and abundant inshore fish, the common goby, Pomatoschistus microps (Kroyer), based on data collected from the wild, and by modelling likely breeding patterns. Wet calorimetry was used to determine the energy content offish tissue, and this allowed reproductive effort to be expressed as both an energy and a weight ratio of gonad to somatic body. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) calculated as an energy ratio was greater than that calculated as a dry "weight ratio". For ripe females the GSI (dry weight) at the onset of breeding was 67.5%. Theoretical and observed values of the maximum number of egg batches laid by a single female during a 16-week breeding season are 9-10, and this corresponds to a total caloric investment of almost 12 kJ. Estimates of the reproductive efficiency, using the dietary energy content during the breeding season, range from 28.2% to a maximum of 44.0%. These values are among the highest calculated for a fish species, and are in keeping with the long and intensive breeding strategy observed in the wild population.  相似文献

Some of the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) broodstock reproductive constraints are related to sperm quality. Although they present two defined spawning season (spring and autumn), males gave semen during all the year thus an exhaustive annual sperm analysis is important to determine the seasonal changes in semen quality. Sampling was performed monthly during one year, analyzing different cellular parameters to better understand sperm quality limitations obstructing sole mass production. The percentage of progressive motile cells and their linear velocity showed a decrease from March (beginning of the first spawning season) to July (when the highest temperatures were observed), followed by a slight increase in August and October (second spawning season). DNA fragmentation values showed highest values between the two spawning seasons and decreased to the end of the year. The percentage of apoptotic cells was lowest in March (beginning of the first spawning season) and the highest in November. The percentage of cells resistant to seawater exposure presented two peaks related with both spawning seasons. There was a tendency for the semen to attain a quality peak between the beginning and the middle of the first spawning season (March-May), followed by a pronounced decrease, achieving the lowest values during the months with the highest temperature. Also, the different males present in the broodstocks reach their sperm quality peak at different times, which will result in an unequal contribution for the next generation.  相似文献

Gonad development of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus in two volcanic crater  lake  habitats (Sampaloc Lake, Taal Lake) in south Luzon, Philippines was examined during the annual reproductive cycle. The minimum body size‐at‐maturity of fish in these two lake habitats was also compared. Four gonad development stages were characterized as basis for the classification of ovarian (immature, maturing, mature, spawned) and testicular maturation (immature, maturing, mature) phases. The occurrence of all development stages in individual gonads suggest an asynchronous development whereby advanced stages are recruited continuously from a pool of younger stage germ cells to result in elevated female and male GSI throughout the annual cycle due to active gonadogenesis. Together with the increasing occurrence of advanced stage oocytes and spermatozoa from March until October, the elevated GSI of fish may indicate peak gonadal growth during the onset of the dry season (December–January) for eventual spawning from the beginning (May–June) until the end of the wet season (October–November). In both lake habitats, male fish were smaller than females but, regardless of sex, the minimum size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake was significantly smaller than fish in Taal Lake. Overall, asynchronous development during oogenesis and spermatogenesis allows for year‐round reproduction of silver therapon, with elevated gonad growth in the dry season in preparation for spawning during the wet season. Compared with fish in Taal Lake, a smaller size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake may be a response of the wild fishery stock to long‐term high fishing mortality and degradation of the lake habitat.  相似文献

1. The results of limnological studies on a small, 35-ha, triangular man-made lake and a small adjacent fish pond in the coastal savanna of Ghana are described. 2. The lake, which has a renewal time of approximately 0.96 years, is subject to large, predictable seasonal changes. Water volume and surface area rapidly reach maximum values in the wet season from April to June despite the low runoff values which average only 1.2% of the precipitation. Minimum values occur in the dry season when up to 76% of the lake area may be exposed. Most of the water is lost by evaporation which may amount to 193 cm annually. 3. The annual cycle in water temperature follows that in solar radiation with peaks towards the end of the dry season in March to April and deep troughs in the wet season from April to June. During the dry season the water column is characterized by greater stability, a higher degree of stratification, and a much higher amplitude of diurnal temperature change (4-5°C) than in the wet season (1°C). Isothermal conditions tend to be approached nocturnally and even during the day in the wet season. 4. The ionic content of the water is low and dominated by bicarbonate, sodium, silica and iron. During the wet season flood water results in a decline in conductivity from 214 to 30 μmhos/cm2, a decrease in pH and transparency, and an increase in oxidizable organic material. Except for the conductivity these values return to normal in about 6 weeks as a result of rapid decomposition of allochthonous materials. 5. The oxygen pulse is strong and photosynthetic activity by phytoplankton high during the dry season whereas in the wet season the converse is true. As a result of the low concentration of organic carbon (0.10–0.35%) in the sediments their oxygen demands are low. Consequently, dissolved oxygen values near the sediment are relatively high and oxygen stratification poorly-developed. Most of the organic carbon appears to be recycled in the water column rather than in the sediments as is generally the case in tropical ecosystems. 6. Rooted vegetation became permanently established in the fish pond but not i n the lake itself. Emergent and floating vegetation which grows profusely in the draw-down area in the wet season is for the most part exported from the system by wind and biological agencies and, therefore, contributes little to the energy and mineral budgets of the lake. Primary production in the water column is mainly by Myxophyceae and Bacillariophyceae and is low during the dry season (1.35 gC/m2/day) and very low in the wet season. Possible reasons for the low level of primary production are discussed.  相似文献

Yellowstone cutthroat trout (YCT), Oncorhynchus clarki bouvieri, that spawn in the outlet of Yellowstone Lake show two potamodromous migration patterns, fluvial and allacustrine. The main purpose of this study was to determine whether those fluvial and allacustrine YCT represent reproductively isolated stocks. Redd surveys indicated spawning occurred during about 5 consecutive weeks between late May and mid-July 1993–1995. Lake fish (N=6), defined as radiotagged YCT that entered Yellowstone Lake after the spawning period (i.e. allacustrine pattern), were found in the river between the lake outlet (river kilometer [Rkm] 0) and Rkm 20.0 during spawning. Probable lake fish (N=28; tagged YCT that were last detected near the lake outlet) were found between Rkm 0 and Rkm 22.5 during spawning. River fish (N=4; tagged YCT that remained in the river when annual tracking concluded in fall, i.e. fluvial pattern) were found between Rkm 1.1 and Rkm 18.0 during spawning. Fidelity to spawning areas used between consecutive years was suggested by one of five lake fish and the single river fish for which data were available. Spatial overlap in spawning and a lack of temporal separation between the life-history types during spawning suggested that fluvial and allacustrine YCT were not reproductively isolated. Radiotagging, as well as visual observations made annually from boats during April and May, indicated fluvial YCT overwintered downstream from Rkm 14 and were few, probably on the order of 10% of all YCT that spawned in the Yellowstone River.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the seasonal timing and diel activity patterns of lacustrine brook charr when migrating to a lake outlet for spawning, and (2) the homing of reproducing individuals. In 1995, 745 individuals were captured while migrating to the spawning ground compared to 1148 in 1996. In both years, the sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 but females were significantly longer than males. The spawning migrations lasted about 48d and were more nocturnal (between 20:00 and 8:00h) than diurnal. The migration to the spawning ground began when water temperature decreased to 13°C and peaked when water temperature decreased from 11°C to 7°C. Peaks in migration activity were always preceded by a sudden decrease followed by an increase in temperature. The spawning migration lasted until the third week of October, when water temperature varied between 3°C and 8°C. Males, especially larger ones, arrived on the spawning ground before females in both years. The length of males migrating to the spawning ground decreased during the spawning season while the females' length showed no pattern. Only 9.7% of the 745 fin-clipped individuals from 1995 returned to the lake outlet to spawn in 1996. The results of this study indicate that lacustrine brook charr show similarities to other anadromous and lake-spawning salmonid populations when migrating to spawning grounds.  相似文献
