Detailed measurements of diurnal variations in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) were made at seven locations within the canopy of aMiscanthus sinensis grassland to evaluate the light conditions of microsites for heliophilic tree seedlings. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the short-term light fluctuation on a clear day was highly dependent on the wind speed and solar elevation angle, whereas on a cloudy day it was mainly determined by the PPFD incident from above the canopy. The relative PPFD at 40 cm aboveground varied from 0.065 to 0.252, depending on sky conditions and the sensor's position in relation to clumped patches ofM. sinensis. On a clear day, the proportion of PPFD readings above 100 μmol·m−2·s−1 contributed by sunflecks ranged between 25.4% and 82.0%. Computer simulation showed that the contribution of sunflecks to the daily carbon gain ofQuercus serrata seedlings may range from 11% to 65%. The mean relative PPFD measured under diffuse light conditions was linearly related to the daily total PPFD and the daily carbon gain by single leaves ofQ. serrata seedlings. This suggests that the relative PPFD under diffuse light conditions provides an appropriate measure of site-specific light availability within a grass canopy.  相似文献

To understand the sunfleck utilization of leaves in heliophilic trees within grass canopies, we studied the photosynthetic induction response ofQuercus serrata seedlings grown for 5 months in different microsites in aMiscanthus sinensis canopy. Two phases, a rapid increase in CO2 uptake and a following slow increase, were recognizabie in the time course of CO2 uptake in response to an increase of photon flux densities (PFD). When the preceding period of low light became shorter, the period of the two phases became shorter. The capacity of response to a sudden light increase was evaluated by the relative photosynthetic induction efficiency (RPIE) defined as the ratio of integrated carbon gain measured to that calculated by assuming that a steady-state assimilation would be achieved instantaneously after the light increase. RPIEs estimated were negatively related to potential sunfleck PFD of microsite. The leaves of the seedlings grown in the microsite with a lower sunfleck PFD and a shorter sunfleck duration showed a more rapid response to a sudden increase of light. These findings suggest that the leaves ofQ. serrata seedlings growing under a lower sunfleck PFD are able to increase the photosynthetic capacity more rapidly to an increase of PFD.  相似文献

Effects of microsite light availability on the growth and survival of transplantedQuercus serrata Thunb. seedlings in aMiscanthus sinensis Anderss. grass canopy were investigated by a “plant's eye view” approach. Diffuse site factors, i.e., the fractional transmissions of diffuse photosynthetic photon flux density, were estimated at 15 cm aboveground in 108 microsites where the seedlings grew. Microsite diffuse site factors were significantly different between surviving and dead seedlings during the experiment period from April to October (F[1,14]=10.9, P<0.01). Relative growth rate of dry weight for individual seedlings positively depended on the diffuse site factors (r2=0.482, P<0.001 in May; r2=0.312, P<0.001 in October). Only 16 seedlings produced their second stem flush within the grass canopy. The ratio of height to dry weight of the second stem flush was significantly higher for the seedlings grew in shady microsites than for those in less shady microsites (r2=0,471, P<0.01 in May). This study suggests that the microsite heterogeneity of light availability is one of the important factors affecting the establishment of tree seedlings in patchy grasslands.  相似文献

The effects of different light regimes on the survival, growth and morphology ofQuercus serrata seedlings were studied in canopies ofMiscanthus sinensis. The seedlings of various ages (0–3 yr) were grown in three light regimes: under a denseM. sinensis canopy (TG plot) receiving 2.5%–8.7% of full sunlight, under a relatively sparse canopy (SG plot) receiving 3.8%–16.1% of light and in an adjacent open site (NG plot). There was a little difference in the survival ofQ. serrata seedlings among the three plots. Height and diameter of stem and total leaf area of the seedlings were significantly lower in the shadier plots. However, the first (bottom) flush of the stem was significantly longer in the TG plot than in the NG and SG plots. Total dry weights of individual 1- and 2-yr-oldQ. serrata seedlings in the TG plot were reduced to about one-twelfth of those in the NG plot. Although the relative proportion in dry weight of each organ did not differ significantly among the plots, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area and stem height per unit dry weight were significantly higher in shadier plots. The leaf area per unit stem height was increased considerably in the sunnier plots.

Perennial C4 grasses, especially Miscanthus sinensis, are widely distributed in the degraded lands in South China. We transplanted native and exotic tree seedlings under the canopy of M. sinensis to assess the interaction (competition or facilitation) between dominant grass M. sinensis and tree seedlings. The results of growth, chlorophyll fluorescence, and ultrastructure showed that negative effects may be stronger in perennial dominant grass M. sinensis. Although M. sinensis buffered the air temperature, improved soil structure, and increased soil phosphorus content, these beneficial effects were outweighed by the detrimental effect, especially overshading. To ensure the establishment of target native species in M. sinensis communities in degraded lands of South China, restoration strategies should include removing aboveground vegetation, planting target species seedlings in openings to reduce the effects of canopy shading, and/or selecting competition-tolerant target species. Also, seedlings of exotic species used in restoration engineering cannot be directly planted under the canopy of M. sinensis.  相似文献

Ecophysiological comparisons were made of the growth and photosynthetic characteristics between seedlings of deciduousQuercus serrata and evergreenQuercus myrsinaefolia. Q. myrsinaefolia seedlings naturally occurring in secondary coppice forests showed exponential-like growth in height with age, while sympatricQ. serrata seedlings were considerably smaller in height, their growth being limited by shortage of light. The photosynthetic characteristics measured under laboratory conditions showed no bases for the differences in growth between the two species on the forest floor: Light compensation points of the seedlings raised under 5% daylight were almost identical for the two species, being about 6.0 μE·m−2·s−1. Growth analysis of seedlings planted in a coppice forest showed that bothQ. serrata andQ. myrsinaefolia could hardly grow during the summer under the shrub layer, when relative photon flux density (RPFD) was 0.9±0.5%. In the winter, when RPFD under the leafless canopy increased to 29.3±2.7%, the dry matter production of the evergreen seedlings ofQ. myrsinaefolia was much improved. Current-year seedlings of the species showed NAR of 0.102±0.021 g·dm−2·mo−1 during the winter. Temperature dependency of photosynthesis and increment of leaf temperature by direct solar beam also indicated active photosynthesis ofQ. myrsinaefolia on the forest floor during the winter.  相似文献

Three deciduous broad-leaved trees, Quercus serrata, Castanea crenata and Carpinus laxiflora, were the main constituents of a coppice forest in central Japan. The shoot elongation and leaf emergence modes of both saplings and the canopy of the three species were investigated. The shoot elongation modes of Q. serrata and C. crenata were the same in saplings and the upper layer of the canopy. The second shoots of these two species were formed after the first shoots were elongated. C. laxiflora was different between saplings and the upper layer of the canopy. In saplings, only the first shoots took a long time to elongate. In the upper canopy layer, higher order shoots were formed in the same way as in the other two species. In the lower layer of the canopy, all three species showed the same shoot elongation mode, in which only the first shoot and its duration of elongation was short. Leaf longevity, individual leaf area, leaf mass per unit leaf area and the stem mass per unit stem length of C. laxiflora were significantly shorter or significantly smaller than those of Q. serrata and C. crenata. The length of the stem per unit leaf area of C. laxiflora was three times that of Q. serrata and five times that of C. crenata. The elongation growth of C. laxiflora was highly efficient as it occurred with a small leaf area. The shoot dynamics and the shoot structure of C. laxiflora are more suitable for elongation growth than in Q. serrata and C. crenata. Furthermore, the shoot structures of the three species were compared and ecological characteristics of the three species are discussed. Seasonal and spatial patterns of light availability were investigated in the understory of a small fragment (approximately 1300 m2) of a riparian deciduous forest of the Kokai River in central Japan dominated byQuercus acutissima Carruth., with the aim to understand the characteristics of microsite light availability forArisaema heterophyllum Blume, a threatened plant species uniquely associated with the riparian habitat. Diffuse site factor, which is the ratio of PFD (photon flux density, 400–700 nm) at a microsite to the open sky reference under diffuse light condition, was shown to be a satisfactory index for the evaluation of light availability for the understory plants in the habitat. Diffuse site factor 1,0 1,000 understory microsites along a 20 m transect from the edge to the interior of the forest, showed conspicuous seasonal changes in both mean and variation. Light availability decreased with seasonal tree canopy regeneration, with the highest spatial heterogeneity being recorded during the time of canopy closure. Auto-correlations of microsite light availability between different seasons were considerably high, suggesting the stability of relative light availability for individual microsites throughout the growing season ofA. heterophyllum. Fairly high light availability during summer season, which surpassed 20% of the open sky reference in most microsites, would be important for the growth and persistence of summer herbaceous plants likeA. heterophyllum.  相似文献

Question: How do spatial patterns and associations of canopy and understorey vegetation vary with spatial scale along a gradient of canopy composition in boreal mixed‐wood forests, from younger Aspen stands dominated by Populus tremuloides and P. balsamifera to older Mixed and Conifer stands dominated by Picea glauca? Do canopy evergreen conifers and broad‐leaved deciduous trees differ in their spatial relationships with understorey vegetation? Location: EMEND experimental site, Alberta, Canada. Methods: Canopy and understorey vegetation were sampled in 28 transects of 100 contiguous 0.5 m × 0.5 m quadrats in three forest stand types. Vegetation spatial patterns and relationships were analysed using wavelets. Results: Boreal mixed‐wood canopy and understorey vegetation are patchily distributed at a range of small spatial scales. The scale of canopy and understorey spatial patterns generally increased with increasing conifer presence in the canopy. Associations between canopy and understorey were highly variable among stand types, transects and spatial scales. Understorey vascular plant cover was generally positively associated with canopy deciduous tree cover and negatively associated with canopy conifer tree cover at spatial scales from 5–15 m. Understorey non‐vascular plant cover and community composition were more variable in their relationships with canopy cover, showing both positive and negative associations at a range of spatial scales. Conclusions: The spatial structure and relation of boreal mixed‐wood canopy and understorey vegetation varied with spatial scale. Differences in understorey spatial structure among stand types were consistent with a nucleation model of patch dynamics during succession in boreal mixed‐wood forests.  相似文献

Abstract. Spatial heterogeneity of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), soil moisture and soil N mineralization in a range of oldfield communities was analyzed using semi-variograms for transect data. Percent transmittance of PAR was examined in eight communities, and soil moisture and N mineralization were examined in the two most common communities. In general, the sites with the highest resource availability had the smallest coefficients of variation. For light, 63% of the transects showed significant non-zero spatial autocorrelation with sills at 1 - 70 cm distance intervals. Although the grass-dominated communities had the highest average PAR levels and the lowest coefficients of variation, they also were among those with the greatest percentage of transects that had non-zero spatial autocorrelation. For light, the average semivariogram range, or distance within which samples were autocorrelated, was 19 cm and different among communities at p = 0.07. For soil moisture, two of three shrub sites and one of three grass sites showed non-zero spatial autocorrelation with sills at 10 - 300 cm distance intervals. Average semivariance range was 249 cm for the shrub community and 170 cm for the grass community. For N-mineralization, none of the shrub and one of three grass sites showed non-zero spatial autocorrelation with a sill, with a semivariance range of 60 cm. Soil moisture and N-mineralization were higher in the shrub than in the grass communities. Overall, these results indicate that resource variability occurred within patches of uniform vegetation, and the range of resource spatial dependence was different among resources even within a single community type. Our results suggest that different seedlings invading these communities will experience very different patterns of microsite heterogeneity as a result of their specific resource requirements.  相似文献

Germination and seedling survival of some woody plants were examined in a colony of the common cormorant at Unoyama, central Japan. The germination ofQuercus serrata andPinus densiflora was less successful in the colony than outside the colony. The percentage of germination success was negatively correlated with the amount of cormorant faeces scattered on the ground and also with the soil water conent. Most of the germinated seedlings inside of the colony died with symptoms such as necrosis spreading from the edge of leaves. Saplings ofQ. serrata also tended to die more in the colony than outside the colony. The survival rate ofQuercus glauca seedlings with scattered faeces on their leaves and/or on the the surrounding soil was significantly lower than the rate of those free of faeces. These results suggest that in the cormorant colony, germination of seeds and seedling survival are greatly inhibited due to both the direct and indirect effects of cormorant faeces.  相似文献

Spatial variation in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was investigated in detail at different heights within the canopy of aMiscanthus sinensis grassland to evaluate the light environment of microsites for establishment of heliophilic tree seedlings. Highly heterogeneous patterns of light distribution were revealed within the apparently uniform grass canopies, especially under direct light. The frequency distribution patterns of relative PPFD (RPFD) were compared among different solar and sky conditions. With increasing height in the canopy, the mean RPFD value and standard deviation (SD) increased, while the skewness and kurtosis of the distribution decreased. The mean RPFD and SD were higher, especially at higher solar elevation angles, under direct light than those under diffuse light conditions. The frequency distribution of RPFD was more platykurtic under direct light and at higher solar elevation angles.  相似文献

Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) at 15 cm above the ground was measured at 20 microsites in gaps and grass patches within aMiscanthus sinensis Anderss community at 10 s intervals during 5 days every month from May to September 1989. Microsite light availability, which was characterized by daily total PPFD, sunfleck PPFD (PPFD above a threshold value of 50 or 400 μmol m−2 s−1) and the diffuse site factor, showed evident seasonal changes, with a marked reduction between June and July due to the rapid growth of the grass canopy. The monthly median value of daily total PPFD among the microsites decreased from 10.3 mol m−2 day−1 in May to 0.77 mol m−2 day−1 in September, with a reduction in the diffuse site factor from 31 to 4%. During the summer, the median value of the total time of sunflecks exceeding 50 μmol m−2 s−1 contributed 7–18% of measurement time, but the contribution of these sunflecks to daily total PPFD ranged from 29 to 59%. There was considerable microsite variation in light availability throughout the measurement period. Rank correlation analysis revealed that some microsites, such as those in gaps, consistently received more total PPFD, more sunfleck PPFD and had a higher diffuse site factor than those in grass patches. The diffuse site factor had a linearly positive relationship with daily total PPFD and total sunfleck PPFD for the 20 microsites during the measurement period, confirming that the diffuse site factor is a useful index for microsite light availability withinM. sinensis canopies.  相似文献

We conducted a rigorous test of tropical tree seedling microhabitat differentiation by examining microhabitat associations, survival and growth of established seedlings of ten tropical tree species representing a four-factor gradient in seed size. Eight microhabitat variables describing soil and light conditions were measured directly adjacent to each of 588 seedlings within twelve 10×100 m belt transects at Paracou, French Guiana, and at 264 reference points along the transects. From these measurements, we defined three principal components describing soil richness, soil softness and canopy openness. Six of ten species (in 9 of 30 total cases) were distributed non-randomly with respect to microhabitat along at least one principal component. However, few species demonstrated clear microhabitat specialization. All shifts in distribution relative to reference points were in the same direction (richer, softer soil). Furthermore, of 135 pairwise comparisons among the species, only 7 were significantly different. More than three-fourths of all seedlings (75.3%) survived over the 2-year monitoring period, but survival rates varied widely among species. In no case was the probability of survival influenced by any microhabitat parameter. Relative height growth rates for the seedlings over 2 years varied from –0.031 cm cm–1 year–1 (Dicorynia guianensis, Caesalpiniaceae) to 0.088 cm cm–1 year–1 (Virola michelii, Myristicaceae). In only 4 of 30 cases was height growth significantly associated with one of the three principal components. Because the conditions in this study were designed to maximize the chance of finding microhabitat differentiation among a group of species differing greatly in life history traits, the lack of microhabitat specialization it uncovered suggests that microhabitat partitioning among tropical tree species at the established seedling stage is unlikely to contribute greatly to coexistence among these species.  相似文献

Carex acutiformis and Brachypodium pinnatum were grown with a uniform distribution of photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD) with height, and in a vertical PFD gradient similar to the PFD gradient in a leaf canopy. Distribution of organic leaf N and light-saturated rates of photosynthesis were determined. These parameters were also determined on plants growing in a natural vegetation stand. The effect of a PFD gradient was compared with the effect of a leaf canopy. In Brachypodium, plants growing in a vegetation stand had increasing leaf N with plant height. However, distribution of leaf N was not influenced by the PFD gradient treatment. The gradient of leaf N in plants growing in a leaf canopy was not due to differences within the long, mostly erect, leaves but to differences between leaves. In Carex, however, the PFD gradient caused a clear increase of leaf N with height in individual leaves and thus also in plants. The leaf N gradient was similar to that of plants growing in a leaf canopy. Leaf N distribution was not affected by nutrient availability in Carex. In most cases, photosynthesis was positively related to leaf N. Hence, lightsaturated rates of photosynthesis increased towards the top of the plants growing in leaf canopies in both species and, in Carex, also in the PFD gradient, thus contributing to increased N use efficiency for photosynthesis of the whole plant. It is concluded that in Carex the PFD gradient is the main environmental signal for leaf N allocation in response to shading in a leaf canopy, but one or more other signals must be involved in Brachypodium.  相似文献

Only recently have studies addressed the effect of early-colonizing vegetation on tree seedling survival and growth during secondary succession in tropical old fields, and few studies have elucidated the physiological responses of tree seedlings to different vegetational communities. We compared growth and various photosynthetic parameters for seedlings of four rain-forest tree species, Cedrela tonduzii, Inga punctata, Ocotea whitei, and Tapirira mexicana, growing in areas of pasture grass and shrubs in early-successional abandoned pasture in Costa Rica; in addition, we made measurements for two species in forest gaps. We tested the general hypothesis that early-colonizing shrubs facilitate growth of forest tree seedlings. Specifically, we measured microclimate, growth, CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, photosystem II quantum yield (KPSII), and xanthophyll pigment pools for all seedlings. Photosynthetic flux density (PFD) was higher under grass than shrubs or forest gaps, but was highly variable in each growth environment. For three of the four species, height growth was greatest in the grass compared to the shrubs and forest gaps; growth was similar below grass and shrubs for O. whitei. Photosynthetic capacity, apparent quantum yield, and stomatal conductance did not vary across habitats, but light compensation point and PFD at light saturation tended to be higher in the grass compared to forest and shrub growth environments. Water use efficiency differed across growth environments for three of the species. For plants in ambient PFD and dark-adapted plants, the efficiency of excitation energy transfer through PSII was lowest for plants in the grass compared to shrubs and forest gaps and also differed across species. Measurement of steady-state responses of KPSII to increasing PFD indicated a significant effect of growth environment at low PFD for all species and significant effects at high PFD only for I. punctata. All species exhibited a high degree of midday xanthophyll de-epoxidation in the different growth environments. Xanthophyll pigment pool size on an area basis was highest in the grass compared to shrubs and forest gaps for all four species. The results suggest that shrubs do not provide a facilitative effect for growth or photosynthesis for ~1.5-year-old seedlings of these four species. We conclude that site differences in success of tree seedlings during succession are a result of complex interactions of facilitation and competition and are not simply based on physiological responses to PFD.  相似文献

Aim The greatest biodiversity impact of non‐native plant species is caused by rapid expansion of colonist populations. Unfortunately, invasion has rarely been documented in real time at a population scale, and demographic mechanisms of invasion remain unclear. Our goal is to describe real‐time expansion of populations, using channelled diffusion as a null model. Location The study examined three populations of the invasive annual grass Microstegium vimineum in mature second‐growth forests of south‐eastern Ohio and nearby West Virginia, USA. Methods Distributions were recorded in belt transects perpendicular to population edges over a period of 3 years. A second group of belt transects documented spread along five types of potential movement corridor. Observed changes in distribution were compared with predictions from a diffusion model. A seed‐sowing experiment tested seed availability, microsite quality and proximity to potential movement corridors as factors controlling population spread. Results Population boundaries showed little change over the study period. Colonization was limited by propagule availability over distances as little as 0.25 m, and to a lesser extent by litter cover. Populations did not advance along several potential movement corridors including unpaved roads, off‐road vehicle trails and footpaths. Advance was observed along deer trails and stream courses but did not conform to the wave‐form distribution predicted by diffusion theory. During the study, seeds were moved out of experimental plots by sheet flow and minor flooding events along small streams. Main conclusion At a population level, invasion is driven by processes that are episodic in time and non‐random in space – probably a common condition in non‐native plant species. Spatially realistic models are likely to be more useful than diffusive models in managing invasions at these scales.  相似文献

While invasive species may be visible indicators of plant community degradation, they may not constitute the only, or even the primary, limitation to stand regeneration. We used seed-augmentation and grass-removal experiments under different canopy conditions to assess the relative importance of dispersal limitation, resource availability, and competition on seedling establishment in the understory shrubs Sophora chrysophilla, Dodonea viscosa, and Pipturus albidus in a montane mesic forest in Hawaii. The study location was an Acacia koa-Metrosideros polymorpha forest at 1000–1500 m elevation on the leeward side of Hawaii Island; it is a closed-canopy forest historically subject to logging and grazing by cattle and sheep and currently dominated by the exotic grass, Ehrharta stipoides, in the herb layer. Seedling establishment after 1 and 2 years was strongly dispersal limited in Sophora and Dodonea, but not in Acacia, a non-augmented species in which abundant seedlings established, nor in Pipterus, in which only one seedling established in 2 years. Grass cover reduced seedling establishment in Acacia, Sophora, and Dodonea and, for the latter two species, seedling establishment was substantially greater in the warmer, more moist forest at the lowest elevation. Light, moisture, and resin-captured N and P were more strongly affected by elevation and canopy composition than by grass cover, but in most cases seedling establishment was not positively correlated with resource availability. Limitations to the establishment of woody seedlings in this forest-grassland mixture vary among species; however, both dispersal limitation and competition from a shade-tolerant grass are important deterrents to regeneration in these forests.  相似文献

Nonnative plant species commonly occur along roadsides, and populations are often assumed to invade by spread along the road axis. To distinguish between the function of roadsides as movement corridors and as habitat, nonnative plant species were surveyed along roads in deciduous forest sites in southeastern Ohio, USA. The importance of road proximity was tested by comparing nonnative species abundance in 100 m transects along roads with transects in undisturbed forest. Nonnative species were most abundant and most frequently observed in roadside sites in valleys. Three common species were chosen for closer scrutiny. In a seed sowing experiment roads and open sites proved to be better locations for the germination and growth of Microstegium vimineum than non-roadside and closed-canopy sites. Tussilago farfara and Rosa multiflora occurred in a small number of disjunct patches suggesting infrequent arrival in the sampled transects. Both species were strongly clustered at scales consistent with diffusive spread by vegetative growth and short-range seed dispersal. Comparisons of distributions parallel and perpendicular to roads showed no evidence for enhanced dispersal along the road axis. Microstegium distributions were correlated with local light availability implying site saturation. Microstegium micro-distributions suggested that spread along the road axis was facilitated by movement of dormant seeds in road maintenance. Thus, roadsides appear to function as both habitat and a conduit for population expansion, with the rate of spread dependent on the life history of the individual species. These results suggest a hierarchical process of regional invasion, with different dispersal mechanisms functioning at different spatial scales.  相似文献
