Radiolarians and planktonic foraminifers were studied from a series of continuous outcrops of the Upper Cretaceous (upper Campanian) Kannaviou Formation near Sarama Village (southwestern Cyprus). The composite study section has a narrow stratigraphic interval that covers the upper Campanian, with a total thickness of more than 70 m. The Amphipyndax tylotus (radiolarian) Zone is found within the study section. According to foraminiferal data the studied interval corresponds to the middle-upper Campanian age (from Contusotruncana plummerae Zone to the lower part of Gansserina gansseri Zone).  相似文献

Jurassic and Cretaceous radiolarian faunas were discovered in bedded chert of the Dinaric and Vardar tectonic zones of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Only Triassic radiolarians have previously been described in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the finds of Bajocian, Bathonian-Callovian, Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian, Tithonian-Berriasian, and Campanian are new. Additional localities of Triassic and Jurassic radiolarians were investigated in Serbia. By correlation with radiolarians from the previous studies within Serbia, the Late Aalenian-Bajocian and Bathonian-Callovian Serbian radiolarian beds are newly dated. The first find of Cretaceous radiolarians in Serbia is reported. The oldest Mesozoic Radiolaria-bearing formations outcropping in the Western Belt of the Vardar Zone are dated Mid-Upper Triassic. The youngest radiolarians come from the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) of the northern part of this belt of the Vardar Zone, where they co-occur with planktonic foraminifers. The distribution of 70 radiolarian samples within sections is shown. The taxonomic composition of 39 samples is analyzed. Radiolarian species extracted from 13 samples are described and figured. The list of 72 taxa and 3 plates of Jurassic radiolarians of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 3 plates of Triassic, 1 plate of Middle Jurassic, and 1 plate of Upper Cretaceous radiolarians of Serbia are presented.  相似文献

Structurally preserved angiosperm flowers are described fromthe Upper Cretaceous of southern Sweden. They are found in fluviatiledeposits dated, on palynological evidence, as Upper Santonianor Lower Campanian. The material studied includes two speciesof Scandianthus gen.nov. and one unnamed, related taxon. Thefossil flowers represent the best-preserved Cretaceous floralstructures available and the preservation permits detailed studyof organization and arrangement of parts. Comparison with flowersof extant angiosperms indicates a close relationship with membersof the Saxifragales. Scandianthus gen.nov. fossil angiosperm, Upper Cretaceous  相似文献

Three paleosol profiles (FPS-profiles) are described from the Djadokhta Formation (Upper Cretaceous, Campanian), outcropping in the Bain-Dzak section (southern Gobi aimag, Mongolia). The new data allow the climate at the time of the formation of the Late Cretaceous FPS-profiles to be interpreted as semiarid with seasonal precipitation. The isolated fossil roots of higher plants preserved in situ in the FPS-1 profile of the Bain-Dzak section are described as a new species, Radicites gobiensis Naugolnykh, sp. nov.  相似文献

Lower Campanian siliceous sponges from epicontinental deposits of the Subhercynian Cretaceous Basin in Germany contain amygdaloidal depressions which are distinguished as a new ichnospecies of the ichnogenus Cuenulites. These bioerosion traces are interpreted as borings of semi-endolithic bivalves, produced without significant rotation movement, probably mostly by chemical action. As there are no signs of tissue reaction in the bored sponges, the structure is considered to be produced post mortem to the sponge, probably in a foreshore-shoreface setting, with redeposition offshore.  相似文献

A coracoid of an enantiornithine bird from Upper Cretaceous (probably late Campanian) fluvial sediments at Castigno (Villespassans, Hérault, southern France) is described. It differs from all hitherto reported enantiornithine coracoids and is referred a new genus and species, Castignovolucris sebei. This bone is large and robust, indicating a bird that was among the largest known enantiornithines, possibly the size of a Canada Goose (Branta canadensis). The new taxon is an addition to the short list of Late Cretaceous birds from France and confirms that enantiornithines were an important component of European avifaunas until late in the Cretaceous.  相似文献

Upper Cretaceous Phaeodarea (Radiolaria) were recovered from the Shoya Formation, which crops out 100 km northwest of Tokyo, central Japan. The Shoya Formation consists of about 600 m-thick marine sedimentary rocks, represented by alternating beds of sandstone and mudstone, which are overlain by about 10 m of Phaeodarian-bearing siliceous mudstone. The latter is assigned to the Upper Cretaceous (late Campanian to early Maastrichtian) based on the associated Polycystine Radiolarian fossils. In spite of the poor general preservation of nearly all Phaeodarian specimens as recrystallized quartz infillings, three new Phaeodarian species, Challengeranium cretaceum, Challengeron paleotriangulum, and Medusetta fossilis, were identified on the basis of their shape and ornamentation. Our finding, together with two other very recent reports of fossil Phaeodarians clearly document that the origin of Phaeodarian Radiolarians can be extended back to at least the Upper Cretaceous.  相似文献

The sedimentology, microfacies, and stratigraphic age (from planktonic and benthic foraminifera and strontium-isotope stratigraphy) of a 300-m-thick Upper Cretaceous carbonate succession from the Island of ?iovo (central Dalmatia, Croatia) were analyzed in order to determine the lithostratigraphic, depositional, and chronostratigraphic framework. The Cretaceous strata were deposited in the southern part of the long-lasting (Late Triassic to Paleogene) Adriatic-Dinaridic Carbonate Platform (ADCP), one of a few late Mesozoic, intra-Tethyan, peri-Adriatic (sub)tropical archipelagos. The succession is separated by a firmground formational boundary into two lithostratigraphic units: the underlying Middle to Upper Campanian Dol Formation consisting of slope pelagic limestone with intercalated turbidites and debrites, and the overlying Upper Campanian ?iovo Formation composed of outer-ramp bioclastic-lithoclastic and echinoderm-dominated packstone. Age, lithology, and depositional settings of the ?iovo Formation are different from other penecontemporaneous, regionally important inner-platform carbonate successions within the ADCP domain. Therefore, the ?iovo Formation is proposed here as a new lithostratigraphic unit. Regionally important condensed intervals in the form of at least two firmground surfaces, characterized by Thalassinoides burrows (with phosphatic mineralization) that belong to the Glossifungites ichnofacies, occur in the lowermost part of the ?iovo Formation. Abrupt shallowing of depositional environments at the boundary between the Dol and the ?iovo Formation, and the generation of the formational boundary firmground, likely correlate with the regionally recorded Upper Campanian Event that represents a global eustatic sea-level fall. A regionally important subaerial exposure surface with nodular calcrete, rhizoliths, and Microcodium aggregates in the upper part of the ?iovo Formation represents a regional subaerial unconformity that was recorded across the ADCP domain and was interpreted as a consequence of diachronous and differential uplift of various parts of the platform in response to the formation of a forebulge in front of the approaching Dinaridic orogen.  相似文献

This paper shows fossil spores and pollen grains from Cretaceous (Upper Campanian) of Sakhalin, Russia, with scanning electron microscopy. A total of 520 palynomorph assemblages consisting of 25% spores of pteridophytes and bryophytes, 4.5% of ephedroid pollen grains, 6.5% of coniferous pollen grains, and 64% of angiospermous pollen grains were recovered in the present study. 5 genera of pteridophytes, 4 genera of gymnosperms, and 18 genera of angiosperms are described in the present study. The frequent and representative genera from the stratum areEphedripites, Liliacidites, Clavatipollenites, Tricolpites, Aquilapollenites, andAzonia. A new genus,Sciadopitipollenites, that is comparable with extantSciadopitys is proposed in the present study. Polycolpate pollen with the same exine sculpture ofClavatipollenites suggests a generic differentiation in the Chloranthaceae during the Cretaceous age. The diverse spores and pollen paleoflora shown in the present study suggests a wide diversification of angiosperms in the Upper Campanian at the eastern side of Laurasia (Aquilapollenites province).

Weitschataster intermedius gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Upper Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) of Hannover (Lower Saxony, N Germany). The new species is characterized by its conspicuous rimmed pedicellariae scars covering almost the complete actinal surface and by small body size. W. intermedius represents a transitional state between W. decipiens comb. nov. from the Lower Campanian and the well-known W. undulatus comb. nov. from the Lower Maastrichtian of NW Europe. Among Spencer’s types of W. undulatus, one paratype is recognized as belonging to the genus Parametopaster.  相似文献

Selachian teeth obtained from trial samples of the Bosenberg quarry near Vorhelm (Beckumer Beds; lower Upper Campanian) and from outcrops along the Hamelbach brook near Stromberg/Oelde (Stromberger Beds; upper Lower Campanian) are presented. Both sites are located in the central southeast of the Münsterland Cretaceous Basin. Fifteen different taxa were identified but only seven could be assigned to a known species. Compared with other taxa the fauna is clearly dominated by squaliform selachians in terms of the number of species and number of specimens. The mixture of selachians presumed to inhabit both deep and shallow waters corresponds with typical taphonomic assemblages of turbiditic deposits and fits very well with the geological setting of the sampled locations.  相似文献

A dorsal vertebra referred to as Azhdarchidae indet. from the Rybushka Formation (Upper Cretaceous, Lower Campanian) of the Beloe Ozero locality in the Saratov Region is described. Its vertebral centrum has a hypapophysis and, at the base of the neural arch, there is a large pneumatic foramen. The vertebra possibly belongs to Volgadraco bogolubovi Averianov, Arkhangelskii et Pervushov, 2008, described from the Rybushka Formation of the Shirokii Karamysh 2 locality in the Saratov Region.  相似文献

Fossil chloranthoid androecia,Chloranthistemon endressii gen. et spec. nov. are described from the Upper Cretaceous (Upper Santonian or Lower Campanian) of Scania, southern Sweden. They are three-lobed and dorsiventrally flattened with all pollen sacs borne laterally and inclined toward the presumed adaxial surface. The central lobe bears two pairs of pollen sacs, the lateral lobes a single pair each. The morphology, anatomy and valvate dehiscence of the fossil androecia is very similar to that seen in extant species ofChloranthus andSarcandra, but the in situ pollen differs from that of all extantChloranthaceae in being spiraperturate. A single chloranthoid androecium from the Lower Cretaceous (Upper Albian) of Maryland, North America has a more generalized structure thanChloranthistemon endressii. It consists of three stamens that are fused at the base, and each stamen bears two pairs of oppositely positioned pollen sacs. Combined with anatomical information from recentChloranthus the Lower Cretaceous specimen suggests that the androecium in the living genus has arisen by fusion and other modifications of three separate stamens each with a normal complement of four pollen sacs. The structure of both the Upper and Lower Cretaceous androecia suggest that these fossilChloranthaceae were insectpollinated. Macrofossil evidence combined with information from dispersed pollen indicates that theChloranthaceae diversified early in angiosperm fossil history and were an important component of Mid-Cretaceous plant communities.  相似文献

A new small theropod dinosaur, documented by an incomplete skeleton and three frontals, is described from the Judith River Formation (Upper Cretaceous: Campanian) of south-central Alberta.
It is distinguished from both Stenonychosaurus and Dromaeosaurus by the structure of the frontal and by the marginal dentition.
It resembles Stenonychosaurus in the structure of the frontal and the Dromaeosauridae in the shape of the endocranial cavity and other skeletal features.
The material is referred to a new genus and species of the Dromaeosauridae.  相似文献

Many specimens of non-marine Ostracodes, especially the new species Zonocypris digitalis were recovered from continental deposits of fuvelian (Campanian) age at Auriol (Provence, south-east France). First species of that genus described in the Cretaceous of southern Europe, Z. digitalis is associated with Charophytes and mainly Gastropodes remains, thus providing confirmation of the datation proposed and age of the studied outcrops. Z. digitalis may be integrated within the current biostratigraphic scale which is accepted as valid for the non-marine Upper Cretaceous of the above mentioned area.  相似文献

The validity of the little-known ichnospecies Entobia exogyrarum (Fri?) is verified. Shells of an oyster, Rhynchostreon suborbiculatum (Lam.), represent the substrate for the sponge borings. The borings occur in many Upper Cenomanian to Middle Turonian localities of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. This study revealed that the sponges attacked shells of living oysters. Entobia exogyrarum (Fri?) also represents one of the shallowest occurrences of Entobia borings in the Upper Cretaceous rocks.  相似文献

Four recently collected mammal specimens from the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian–?Campanian) Bostobe Formation in the northeastern Aral Sea Region, Kazakhstan are attributed to Asioryctitheria indet. (an edentulous dentary fragment) and the zhelestid Parazhelestes sp. cf. P. mynbulakensis (a maxillary fragment with a double-rooted canine, an M1, and a dentary fragment including m3). These new records double the known mammal fauna from this formation, which previously included the zhelestid Zhalmouzia bazhanovi and Zhelestidae indet. The taxonomic and ecological structure of the mammal assemblage from the Bostobe Formation can, on present evidence, be considered close to the other eutherian dominated Late Cretaceous mammal assemblages of Central Asia. This region is important in particular in the search for Late Cretaceous ancestors of crown-group eutherian mammal clades (Placentalia).  相似文献

Six species of Upper Cretaceous ostracods of the genusPolycope Sars are described, three of which are new. The well preserved shells come from siliceous chalk nodules — erratics of Campanian to Maastrichtian age — and from a boulder of Upper Turonian chalk embedded in a Pleistocene till at Nossentin near Malchow/NE Germany. Their origin is the Danish Polish Trough in the middle and southern Baltic Sea. Due to the large variability of morphological details a wide definition of the genusPolycope as given here is preferred.  相似文献

We describe the first diagnostic dinosaur fossil from Washington State. The specimen, which consists of a proximal left femur, was recovered from the shallow marine rocks of the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) Cedar District Formation (Nanaimo Group) and is interpreted as pertaining to a large theropod on the basis of its hollow medullary cavity and proximally placed fourth trochanter. The Washington theropod represents one of the northernmost occurrences of a Mesozoic dinosaur on the west coast of the United States and one of only a handful from the Pacific coast of Laramidia during the Cretaceous. Its isolated nature and preservation in marine rocks suggest that the element was washed in from a nearby fluvial system. If the femur pertains to a tyrannosauroid, which seems likely given its size and the widespread occurrence of the group across Laramidia during Late Cretaceous times, then it would represent an earlier occurrence of large body size than previously recognized (complete femur length estimated at 1.2 meters). Uncertainty surrounding the latitude of deposition of the Nanaimo Group (i.e., the Baja-British Columbia hypothesis) precludes assigning the Washington theropod to either of the putative northern or southern biogeographic provinces of Laramidia.  相似文献
