The fatty acid composition of the seed oil has been used as a criterion in searching for a rational infrageneric classification ofLinum L.. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the taxonomic potential of other seed traits such as tocopherols and plastochromanol-8 in this genus. The results revealed that, in addition to fatty acids, tocopherols and plastochromanol-8 possess an important chemotaxonomic value for the genusLinum. Sect.Linum and sect.Syllinum Griseb. clearly differed from each other for the three types of compounds. Sect.Linum was characterized by the presence of plastochromanol-8, a high concentration of linolenic acid, and an intermediate or low concentration of alpha-tocopherol. Contrarily, sect.Syllinum lacked plastochromanol-8 and contained a low concentration of linolenic acid and a high concentration of alpha-tocopherol. The three species evaluated of the sectionLinastrum (Planch.) Bentham showed no common pattern, questioning their classification within the same section.  相似文献

Seed samples of eighteen taxa from four sections in Linum were examined for diagnostic and taxonomic utility of the surface microstructures. Considerably different patterns were distinguished at specific and infraspecific levels. Similar sculpturings in closely related taxa and some common surface features for sectional groupings were observed. Smooth surface textures in sect. Linastrum, granulate-ruminate in sect. Dasylinum and rugulose structure in sect. Linum were typical characteristics. Sect. Syllinum exhibited miscellaneous patterns. Seed coat sculptures may be utilized as additional consistent parameters in the infrageneric delimitations and taxonomical association of Linum.  相似文献

Background

The species relationships within the genus Linum have already been studied several times by means of different molecular and phylogenetic approaches. Nevertheless, a number of ambiguities in phylogeny of Linum still remain unresolved. In particular, the species relationships within the sections Stellerolinum and Dasylinum need further clarification. Also, the question of independence of the species of the section Adenolinum still remains unanswered. Moreover, the relationships of L. narbonense and other species of the section Linum require further clarification. Additionally, the origin of tetraploid species of the section Linum (2n?=?30) including the cultivated species L. usitatissimum has not been explored. The present study examines the phylogeny of blue-flowered species of Linum by comparisons of 5S rRNA gene sequences as well as ITS1 and ITS2 sequences of 35S rRNA genes.

Results

High-throughput sequencing has been used for analysis of multicopy rRNA gene families. In addition to the molecular phylogenetic analysis, the number and chromosomal localization of 5S and 35S rDNA sites has been determined by FISH.Our findings confirm that L. stelleroides forms a basal branch from the clade of blue-flowered flaxes which is independent of the branch formed by species of the sect. Dasylinum. The current molecular phylogenetic approaches, the cytogenetic analysis as well as different genomic DNA fingerprinting methods applied previously did not discriminate certain species within the sect. Adenolinum. The allotetraploid cultivated species L. usitatissimum and its wild ancestor L. angustifolium (2n?=?30) could originate either as the result of hybridization of two diploid species (2n?=?16) related to the modern L. gandiflorum and L. decumbens, or hybridization of a diploid species (2n?=?16) and a diploid ancestor of modern L. narbonense (2n?=?14).

Conclusions

High-throughput sequencing of multicopy rRNA gene families allowed us to make several adjustments to the phylogeny of blue-flowered flax species and also reveal intra- and interspecific divergence of the rRNA gene sequences.

Mature seeds of 20 Linum species were analyzed for their content of lignans. The seeds of common flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) are known to contain as characteristic lignan sesoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), whose presence in seeds of some other Linum species has also been reported. In order to investigate the material for the presence of such very polar lignans as well as for less polar non-glycosidic lignans as frequently found in aerial parts of Linum species, polar and non-polar extracts of each sample were analyzed by HPLC/ESI-MSMS.SDG was detected in 15 of 16 investigated seed samples of taxa representing sections Linum and Dasylinum. None of eight samples of taxa from sections Syllinum and Linopsis contained detectable amounts of SDG. Quite interestingly, most of the SDG-positive samples contained the 8R,8′R-isomer exclusively while only three (including L. usitatissimum) contained the 8S,8′S-stereoisomer as the predominant form. As a most noteworthy finding, the dichloromethane extracts obtained from seeds of several Linum species were found to contain significant concentrations of non-polar cyclolignans of the arylnaphthalene/-dihydronaphthalene lactone type or, alternatively of the aryltetralin lactone type. Thus, seeds of Linum perenne L. as well as those of several other representatives of sections Linum and Dasylinum were found to contain significant concentrations of the arylnaphthalene justicidin B along with further compounds of this type and some aryldihydronaphthalene-type lignans. On the other hand, seeds of Linum flavum and further representatives of section Syllinum were found to contain aryltetralin-type lignans, mainly in the form of esters with aliphatic carboxylic acids, such as 6-methoxypodophyllotoxin-7-O-n-hexanoate, whose occurrence in L. flavum seeds has very recently been reported by us for the first time.Various chemosystematic and biogenetic aspects are discussed in the light of these results.  相似文献

Two North American species ofClematis, sect.Atragene (L.) DC, are recognized.C. occidentalis (Hörnern.) DC. is divided into three varieties, native respectively to eastern North America, the Rocky Mountains, and the Cascade Mountains of Washington.C. columbiana (Nutt.) Torr. & Gray is divided into two extensively intergrading varieties, one prevailing in the southern Rocky Mountains, the other in the northern foothills and in outlying mountain ranges. After a study of the type specimen ofC. columbiana, it was concluded that this name should be applied to the species hitherto commonly known asC. pseudoalpina (O. Kuntze) A. Nels., rather than to the taxon with which it has usually been associated. The two species are evidently closely related and appear occasionally to have hybridized in nature.  相似文献

A new species of woody bamboo (Poaceae: Bambusoideae),Chusquea guirigayensis, is described and illustrated. This species is placed inChusquea sect.Swallenochloa (McClure) L. G. Clark because of its shrubby habit, short waxy internodes, intravaginal branching, and linearly arranged subsidiary buds/branches. In addition, we discuss related species, and describe the ecology and distribution of the new species. Separate keys based on sterile and fertile material of the Venezuelan species ofC. sect.Swallenochloa are provided.  相似文献

In the present paper morphological features of hybrids from crossing of four species ofRosa sect.Caninae (R. canina L.,R. zalana Wiesb.,R. rubiginosa L. andR. sherardii Davies) withR. rugosa Thumbg. (sect.Cinnamomeae) and their heredity are described. F1 generation appears more or less uniform, certain morphological features are patroclinal, other ones are matroclinal and intermediary. The general appearance of these hybrids is intermediary; there seems to be no reason to consider them matroclinal.  相似文献

The wholly North American sectionLeiboldia ofVernonia as revised by Jones (1979) included six species. The present treatment recognizes only three species inLeiboldia, including one newly described from recent collections. The remainder of what Jones consideredLeiboldia has been transferred into a new sect.Lepidonia (Blake) Turner which was first proposed as a monotypic genus. A key to the two sections and 10 species is provided along with an account of their interrelationships. Morphological evidence suggests that sect.Lepidonia is one of the more primitive sections ofVernonia, being as close to certain African sections as they are to the mostly American sect.Vernonia. Consideration is given to the phyletic significance and generic value of receptacular pales in the Vernonieae from which it is concluded that these have persisted in three or more quite unrelated lines of this tribe and undue weight should not be accorded these in generic considerations. Consequently, the paleaceous, monotypic generaLepidonia andBolanosa are sunk into synonymy underVernonia, the former as a distinct section, the latter into the sect.Vernonia.  相似文献

Three species ofAmaranthusare cultivated for their edible seeds:A. hypochondriacus L.,A. cruentusL., andA. caudatusL. The first two are native to Mexico and Guatemala, while the third originated in the Andes. Some authors recognize a fourth species,A. MantegazzianusPass. (A. edulisSpeg.), also from South America. Recent interest in amaranths as crops for improving Third World nutrition makes studies of relationships among amaranth species and intraspecific variation important. The weedy speciesA. hybridus L. (A. quitensisHBK) has been suggested as the progenitor ofA. caudatus, and it appears to be the closest wild relative of the crop. However, discovery of semidomesticated, darkseeded amaranths in Ecuador that are referable toA. caudatusraises some questions. The dark-seeded plants might represent a transitional form between the crop and its weedy progenitor, the product of independent selection of special forms ofA. hybridus, the result of introgressive hybridization between the crop and related weed, established escapes from cultivation, or remnants of the ancestor of the crop which may have been simply wildA. caudatusand notA. hybridus. Detailed morphological comparisons have been made among cultivated forms ofA. caudatus, the semidomesticate, andA. hybridus. Genetic data have been considered, and 2 mixed populations includingA. hybridusand the semidomesticate have been examined. Although all the other hypotheses cannot be eliminated, the dark-seededA. caudatusplants seem most likely to represent escapes from cultivation. Separate recognition ofA. Mantegazzianusdoes not seem warranted.  相似文献

Chloroplast DNA restriction site variation was studied in 31 New World species ofIpomoea, representing a majority of the New World sections and series within the genus. Using 14 endonucleases, a total of 124 phylogenetically informative restriction sites was detected. Dollo parsimony, Wagner parsimony, and bootstrap methods were employed to construct phylogenetic trees and evaluate confidence intervals of monophyletic groups. With a few exceptions, groups circumscribed on the basis of morphological variation are in agreement with groupings based on restriction site variation. Relationships between subgeneric groupings, however, disagree substantially with those proposed in the past. Although conflicting hypotheses for some intersectional relationships are not presently resolvable, cpDNA restriction site analyses propose the following refinements of existing classification schemes.Ipomoea ser.Setosae is divided into distantly related groups, as is sect.Pharbitis. SeriesTyrianthinae, a proposed segregate of sect.Pharbitis, is associated with sect.Calonyction and the Tricolor complex (subg.Quamoclit).Ipomoea sect.Batatas is segregated from other herbaceous groups of the heterogeneous subg.Quamoclit sensu lato and aligned as a derivative ofI. setosa, subg.Eriospermum. To test for homology of key characters weighted in traditional schemes, morphological features were studied with respect to their distribution on lineages defined by restriction site data. Characters such as setose sepals, foliose-pubescent sepals, and erect growth habit, among others, are interpreted as having multiple origins, while 3-locular ovaries, 4-locular ovaries, and long-haired seeds have evolved only once.  相似文献

C-band patterns are described for 20Lilium spp. distributed across six sections. All species have a similar basic karyotype (n = 12) but C-bands differ markedly between them. The patterns are characterized by a dispersed scattering of thin intercalary bands as well as centric and NOR bands. Only one species,L. canadense, shows a clear equilocal pattern with intercalary C-bands occurring proximally in all of the longer chromosome arms. Comparing species, similar patterns are revealed forL. regale andL. sulphureum, forL. formosanum andL. longiflorum (all in sect.Leucolirion) and to a lesser extent forL. hansonii, L. martagon, andL. tsingtauense (sect.Martagon). The pattern forL. henryi (previously classed in sect.Sinomartagon) matches those ofL. regale andL. sulphureum quite well and its transfer to sect.Leucolirion is proposed. This is consistent with results from interspecies hybrids betweenL. henryi andL. regale (and related species) which are reportedly fertile. No other clear similarities in C-band patterns were seen across species. It seems that C-band patterns change rapidly inLilium and hence their usefulness in classification will be restricted to identifying closely related species.Dedicated to Prof.D. G. The stelar structure ofAsplenium obtusifolium and its related species (A. repandulum, A. riparium, A. triquetrum, A. volubile, A. purpurascens, A. ortegae, A. delitescens, A. hoffmannii, andA. laetum) in the New World tropics was observed and compared to that of Asian species ofAsplenium sect.Hymenasplenium. Both of the groups were found to share peculiar stelar structures: steles with two meristeles, a broader ventral and a narrower dorsal, each providing one of the two leaf traces; leaf gaps arranged in two rows between the dorsal and ventral strands, which are connected by thin meristeles, delimiting the leaf gaps. These structures are distinct from the radial symmetrical ones general inAsplenium. Together with cytological evidence, this strongly indicates that the New and Old World groups are closely related. Thus, these Neotropical species should be included in sect.Hymenasplenium.  相似文献

The Mediterranean distylousLinum suffruticosum has dimorphic pollen. That from short-styled plants has sub-monomorphic surface excrescences with minute papillae; that from long-styled plants has strongly dimorphic excrescences with conspicuous papillae. The differences are much like those described in species of other sections of the genus. Pollen of the related homostylousL. tenuifolium has monomorphic pollen. It combines characteristics of bothL. suffruticosum types but resembles that of the long-styled plants somewhat more closely. Ribbonlike styles of long-styled plants ofL. suffruticosum provide another feature which seems to be controlled by the S supergene thought to be associated with distylic incompatibility. The pollen ofL. suffruticosum andL. tenuifolium is very similar to that of some species of sectionLinastrum and would support their placement in that section.  相似文献

A study of herbarium material ofLepanthes indicates that there are at least 18 species on Cuba. The history of the collections and publications on the genus from the island is summarized, and a detailed key to the species is given. One new combination is proposed (L. blepharophylla) and the following species are described as new:L. acunae,L. dressleri,L. cubensis,L. grisebachiana,L. obliquiloba, andL. occidentalis, of which three are from western provinces and two have been associated with inappropriate names.L. mandibularis Reichb. f. is tentatively considered a synonym ofL. chrysostigma Lindl. although the type ofL. mandibularis could not be found. The range of variation included under the nameL. fulva Lindl. suggests that more than one species is involved.  相似文献
