Bryophytes, which include mosses, liverworts and hornworts, indeed play a significant role in the natural dynamics of native forests. They contribute to fundamental ecological processes such as tree regeneration. In this context, the objective was to analyse the association of bryophytes with Nothofagus seedlings, as well as whether the substrates where bryophytes grew influenced bryophyte-tree seedling association, in sub-Antarctic forests at two contrasting landscapes (coastal and mountain) of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina), to better understand their impacts on the natural regeneration processes. We hypothesized that bryophytes act as a substrate for seed germination and initial regeneration growth in pure and mixed forests of N. pumilio and N. betuloides, resulting in widespread tree seedlings–bryophyte associations in all landscapes. In each forest and landscape location, 60 transects were established (10 m in length) to evaluate bryophyte cover (by point intercept method) and substrate type (bare soil, decaying wood and litter cover) where they were growing. An adaptation of the relative interaction index (RII) based on tree seedling cover associated with bryophyte species (%) and tree seedling cover in the absence of bryophytes (%) was calculated and analysed to assess competition or facilitation between bryophytes and tree seedlings. Nothofagus pumilio seedlings were less abundant in bryophytes compared to other substrates, suggesting an inhibitory effect on the germination and/or survival of N. pumilio. In contrast, the seedlings of N. betuloides, in both pure and mixed forests, exhibited higher abundance on bryophyte substrates, particularly in mosses at mountain landscape (RII = 0.83 ± 0.08 in litter and 0.62 ± 0.11 in decaying wood). These findings suggest that bryophytes play a facilitating role for N. betuloides seedlings during germination and initial phases of growth, mainly in the mountain. Therefore, their conservation promotes N. betuloides forest continuity, both in pure and mixed structures.  相似文献

Bryophyte establishment represents a positive feedback process that enhances soil development in newly exposed terrain. Further, biological nitrogen (N) fixation by cyanobacteria in association with mosses can be an important supply of N to terrestrial ecosystems, however the role of these associations during post-glacial primary succession is not yet fully understood. Here, we analyzed chronosequences in front of two receding glaciers with contrasting climatic conditions (wetter vs drier) at Cordillera Darwin (Tierra del Fuego) and found that most mosses had the capacity to support an epiphytic flora of cyanobacteria and exhibited high rates of N2 fixation. Pioneer moss-cyanobacteria associations showed the highest N2 fixation rates (4.60 and 4.96 µg N g−1 bryo. d−1) very early after glacier retreat (4 and 7 years) which may help accelerate soil development under wetter conditions. In drier climate, N2 fixation on bryophyte-cyanobacteria associations was also high (0.94 and 1.42 µg N g−1 bryo. d−1) but peaked at intermediate-aged sites (26 and 66 years). N2 fixation capacity on bryophytes was primarily driven by epiphytic cyanobacteria abundance rather than community composition. Most liverworts showed low colonization and N2 fixation rates, and mosses did not exhibit consistent differences across life forms and habitat (saxicolous vs terricolous). We also found a clear relationship between cyanobacteria genera and the stages of ecological succession, but no relationship was found with host species identity. Glacier forelands in Tierra del Fuego show fast rates of soil transformation which imply large quantities of N inputs. Our results highlight the potential contribution of bryophyte-cyanobacteria associations to N accumulation during post-glacial primary succession and further describe the factors that drive N2-fixation rates in post-glacial areas with very low N deposition.  相似文献

Abstract

At present, the available information about the liverworts of Sphagnum magellanicum Brid. mires from South America is very limited. The main aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive study of the liverwort flora of this habitat, as well as details on the chorology and ecology of the taxa involved. Four different environmental units were examined, based on the water table level and plant cover, in three representative raised bogs from Tierra del Fuego National Park Ushuaia. Floristic relevs were recorded in 93 square plots 050050m2, distributed at random in the environmental units. Twentyfour liverwort species have been identified the majority have a Subantarctic distribution and there were a remarkable number of Magellanean endemics 11 species. Among the rare species, there were two new records for the Argentinian Province of Tierra del Fuego, Cephaloziella byssacea and Chiloscyphus notophyllus. The ecological preferences of the species were analysed based on their frequencies in the four environmental units examined. Only six species demonstrated significant correlation with some of the environmental units. Riccardia pallidevirens, R. georgiensis, R. alcicornis, and Cephaloziella varians, showed a preference for waterlogged and wet habitats, while Calypogeia sphagnicola and Cephalozia chilensis were linked to dense carpets of Sphagnum magellanicum.  相似文献

BackgroundBryophytes represent a very diverse group of non-vascular plants such as mosses, liverworts and hornworts and the oldest extant lineage of land plants. Determination of endogenous phytohormone profiles in bryophytes can provide substantial information about early land plant evolution. In this study, we screened thirty bryophyte species including six liverworts and twenty-four mosses for their phytohormone profiles in order to relate the hormonome with phylogeny in the plant kingdom.MethodologySamples belonging to nine orders (Pelliales, Jungermanniales, Porellales, Sphagnales, Tetraphidales, Polytrichales, Dicranales, Bryales, Hypnales) were collected in Central and Northern Bohemia. The phytohormone content was analysed with a high performance liquid chromatography electrospray tandem-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS).ConclusionThe apparent differences in conjugation and/or degradation strategies of growth hormones between liverworts and mosses might potentially show a hidden link between vascular plants and liverworts. On the other hand, the complement of stress hormones in bryophytes probably correlate rather with prevailing environmental conditions and plant survival strategy than with plant evolution.  相似文献

In 1951, a batch of 24 young animals of both sexes of Chilla or Grey fox Lycalopex griseus from continental Magallanes region, Chile – and perhaps also from adjacent continental Argentina – were released at Onaisin (65 km ESE Porvenir town, 53°18′S) on Tierra del Fuego Island in southernmost South America, to control a European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) irruption that was considered detrimental to sheep (Ovis aries) ranching. Up to now, no attention has been paid to the temporal course of that introduction. Here we provide a historical account of the presence of foxes on the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, starting with Charles Darwin account of 1839 until present. We also review the regulatory framework concerning hunting of those foxes and tally their culling for export of pelts. Finally, we provide estimates of the abundance of Chilla foxes on Tierra del Fuego Island for the period 1999–2007 and for 2021, and highlight their current spread. These translocated foxes have become an abundant and functional part of both steppe and forest ecosystems on the Fuegian archipelago, even though they are killed by hunters, without spatial, temporal, or numerical limits. We conclude that interesting scientific opportunities are being missed regarding the population genetics of a species that may have left founding effects and genetic bottlenecks in Tierra del Fuego, and perhaps some peculiar continental markers among the island population. We also raise the question whether this introduced native species may be deemed invasive, calling for research to determine its impact in its new environment.  相似文献

Abstract

A Holantarctic species, the inter-subgeneric allopolyploid Sphagnum ×falcatulum s.l. is a cryptic species complex composed of allodiploid and allotriploid cytotypes. The allotriploid plants are double allopolyploids (one of just two reported for bryophytes), with the allodiploid cytotype being one parent. Using a combination of microsatellites, nucleotide sequences, and morphological characters, allotriploid S. ×falcatulum is shown to be the most widespread Sphagnum species in the Holantarctic, with genetically documented populations in South America (Tierra del Fuego), New Zealand (South Island), and Australia (Macquarie Island, Tasmania). It is further concluded that six Sphagnum species described from the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago (TDF) of South America and a seventh described from South Island, New Zealand are synonymous with the allotriploid cytotype of S. ×falcatulum. The synonymized species include five named by Heikki Roivainen in 1937, S. ×ehyalinum, and S. subditivum. Allotriploid S. ×falcatulum is the predominant, perhaps the only, subgenus Cuspidata species present in TDF and immediate vicinity. The combination of low genetic diversity and an apparent absence of sexual reproduction indicate that the TDF population of the dioicous allotriploid S. ×falcatulum was likely founded by one or a limited number of individuals. The same is apparently the case for Macquarie I. and Tasmanian populations of allotriploid S. ×falcatulum. Several lines of evidence, including high genetic diversity, frequent sporophyte production, and the occurrence of the allodiploid parent, suggest that allotriploid S. ×falcatulum likely evolved in New Zealand.  相似文献

Background: Climatic variables determining the most suitable sites for the woodlands of Tierra del Fuego are not yet as well understood as those related to their geographical range.

Aim: The aim of this paper is to provide some insights into the relationships between climatic niche and current distribution of three Nothofagus species in Tierra del Fuego.

Methods: We have identified the climatic variables responsible for the most suitable sites for three sub-Antarctic Nothofagus woodland types within their climatic ranges by calculating suitability indices, using the CLIMPAIR niche-based phytoclimatic model.

Results: The distribution range of the major Nothofagus woodlands is mainly driven by variables related to water stress, whereas phytoclimatic suitability is mainly driven by thermal variables related to warm summer temperatures for Nothofagus betuloides and N. pumilio and to winter cold for N. antarctica that are also mainly responsible for the peculiarity of the Fueguian climate.

Conclusions: These findings introduce a new perspective in the study of the Nothofagus ecology, based on the climatic traits responsible for the high-suitability locations instead of the traditional focus on the overall geographical distribution.  相似文献

The Commerson’s dolphin, Cephalorhynchus commersonii, is found in shallow waters of the continental shelf off the eastern coast of South America between 40°S and 56°S. This species is taken incidentally in artisanal gillnet fisheries, especially along the shallow coastline of northern Tierra del Fuego and southern Patagonia. The biological importance of by-catch is likely to be underestimated if the boundaries of subpopulations are not properly defined. Here, we report on the sequence variation of the mitochondrial DNA control region of the Commerson’s dolphin from five areas defined in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina and Chile, to provide a preliminary assessment of population structure where conservation efforts are most needed. A 466 bp fragment of the mitochondrial DNA control region was sequenced from 196 samples of skin, teeth and bone, defining 20 haplotypes from 17 polymorphic sites. Nucleotide (π = 0.40%) and haplotype (h = 0.807) diversity were low compared to some other odontocete populations, but similar to that of other species of this genus. Genetic differentiation evaluated through analyses of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed significant overall differences among areas within Tierra del Fuego (Φ ST  = 0.059, P < 0.01). An analysis of sex-specific population structure suggested that the dispersal rates of both females and males are low, indicative of females displaying greater site fidelity. The results from mtDNA control region sequences alone revealed significant differentiation among studied areas, which should be considered as independent management units. We recommend that the impact of localized gillnet mortalities should be managed on a local scale in these areas of Tierra del Fuego.  相似文献

Fourteen species of Trichomycetes living in the guts of aquatic insects are reported from two provinces of Argentina, Misiones and Tierra del Fuego. Twelve of the species belong to the Harpellales and two are Amoebidiales. Five harpellid species are reported from Misiones in the extreme northeast of the country (Genistellospora homothallica, Harpella tica, Smittium culisetae, Smittium sp., Stachylina sp.) and seven are from Tierra del Fuego, the southern tip of South America (H. meridianalis, Glotzia sp., S. culicis, S. cellaspora, S. imitatum, Stachylina minima, Penella simulii). Insect hosts all were immature stages of Culicidae, Simuliidae, Chironomidae, Ceratopogonidae (Insecta: Diptera), and Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera. The lower diversity of Trichomycetes found at Misiones, which has a subtropical climate and rainforest vegetation, was due possibly to the warmer temperatures of the water (15-24 C), compared to the colder streams of Tierra del Fuego (9-15 C), with forests and steppes as typical vegetation.  相似文献

RNA editing affects messenger RNAs and transfer RNAs in plant mitochondria by site-specific exchange of cytidine and uridine bases in both seed and nonseed plants. Distribution of the phenomenon among bryophytes has been unclear since RNA editing has been detected in some but not all liverworts and mosses. A more detailed understanding of RNA editing in plants required extended data sets for taxa and sequences investigated. Toward this aim an internal region of the mitochondrial nad5 gene (1104 nt) was analyzed in a large collection of bryophytes and green algae (Charales). The genomic nad5 sequences predict editing in 30 mosses, 2 hornworts, and 7 simple thalloid and leafy liverworts (Jungermanniidae). No editing is, however, required in seven species of the complex thalloid liverworts (Marchantiidae) and the algae. RNA editing among the Jungermanniidae, on the other hand, reaches frequencies of up to 6% of codons being modified. Predictability of RNA editing from the genomic sequences was confirmed by cDNA analysis in the mosses Schistostega pennata and Rhodobryum roseum, the hornworts Anthoceros husnotii and A. punctatus, and the liverworts Metzgeria conjugata and Moerckia flotoviana. All C-to-U nucleotide exchanges predicted to reestablish conserved codons were confirmed. Editing in the hornworts includes the removal of genomic stop codons by frequent reverse U-to-C edits. Expectedly, no RNA editing events were identified by cDNA analysis in the marchantiid liverworts Ricciocarpos natans, Corsinia coriandra, and Lunularia cruciata. The findings are discussed in relation to models on the phylogeny of land plants. Received: 2 April 1998 / Accepted: 4 August 1998  相似文献

Two new species of Penicillium Link ex Fries are described and illustrated. They were recovered from sandy soils in the Chilean and Argentinian Tierra del Fuego. They clearly differ from all species of the genus described so far and are, therefore, described and proposed as two new taxa: Penicillium turris-painensis sp. nov and Penicillium lapatayae sp. nov.  相似文献

Background

A number of studies have described the extension of ice cover in western Patagonia during the Last Glacial Maximum, providing evidence of a complete cover of terrestrial habitat from 41°S to 56°S and two main refugia, one in south-eastern Tierra del Fuego and the other north of the Chiloé Island. However, recent evidence of high genetic diversity in Patagonian river species suggests the existence of aquatic refugia in this region. Here, we further test this hypothesis based on phylogeographic inferences from a semi-aquatic species that is a top predator of river and marine fauna, the huillín or Southern river otter (Lontra provocax).  相似文献

Bryophytes contain a large number of terpenoids and phenolic compounds. Recent topics relating to the chemical constituents found in 36 Japanese, 3 New Zealand, 2 European, 1 Argentinean and 1 Taiwanese liverworts and 2 Japanese mosses and their biological activity are discussed. The chemosystematics of some liverworts as well as the chemical relationship between liverworts and mosses, and bryophytes and ferns are also discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Seven species are reported here for the first time for South Georgia. Two of these were already known from Tierra del Fuego, Acrolophozia fuegiana Schust. and Marsupella sprucei (Limpr.) H. Bern., but Acrolophozia sulcata Hässel, Marsupella austrogeorgica Hässel, and Marsupella minutula Hässel are described as new. The additional two species which are described, Austrolembidium crassum Hässel and Greeneothallus gemmiparus Hässel, also required the creation of two new genera. The total number of liverwort species now known to be present on South Georgia is sixty-six.  相似文献

The ecosystems of Tierra del Fuego (in southern Patagonia, Argentina) are seasonally exposed to elevated levels of ultraviolet‐B radiation (UV‐B: 280–315 nm), due to the passage of the ‘ozone hole’ over this region. In the experiments reported in this article the effects of solar UV‐B and UV‐A (315–400 nm) on two UV‐B defence‐related processes: the accumulation of protective UV‐absorbing compounds and DNA repair, were tested. It was found that the accumulation of UV‐absorbing sunscreens in Gunnera magellanica leaves was not affected by plant exposure to ambient UV radiation. Photorepair was the predominant mechanism of cyclobutane‐pyrimidine dimer (CPD) removal in G. magellanica. Plants exposed to solar UV had higher CPD repair capacity under optimal conditions of temperature (25 °C) than plants grown under attenuated UV. There was no measurable repair at 8 °C. The rates of CPD repair in G. magellanica plants were modest in comparison with other species and, under equivalent conditions, were about 50% lower than the repair rates of Arabidopsis thaliana (Ler ecotype). Collectively our results suggest that the susceptibility of G. magellanica plants to current ambient levels of solar UV‐B in southern Patagonia may be related to a low DNA repair capacity.  相似文献

A study was made of the effects of solar ultraviolet‐B radiation (UV‐B) on the growth of the dominant plant species of a shrub‐dominated ecosystem in Tierra del Fuego. This part of southern Argentina can be under the direct influence of the Antarctic ‘ozone hole’ during the austral spring and lingering ozone‐depleted air during the summer. The plant community is dominated by an evergreen shrub (Chiliotrichum diffusum) with an herbaceous layer of Gunnera magellanica and Blechnum penna‐marina in the interspaces between the shrubs. Inspections of ozone trends indicate that the springtime and summertime ozone column over Tierra del Fuego has decreased by 10–13% from 1978/9 to 1998/9. In a set of well‐replicated field plots, solar UV‐B was reduced to approximately 15–20% of the ambient UV‐B using plastic films. Polyester films were used to attenuate UV‐B radiation and UV‐transparent films (~90% UV‐B transmission) were used as control. Treatments were imposed during the growing season beginning in 1996 and continued for three complete growing seasons. Stem elongation of the shrub C. diffusum was not affected by UV‐B attenuation in any of the three seasons studied. However, frond length of B. penna‐marina under attenuated UV‐B was significantly greater than that under near‐ambient UV‐B in all three seasons. Attenuation of solar UV‐B also promoted the expansion of G. magellanica leaves in two of the growing seasons. Differences between treatments in leaf or frond length in B. penna‐marina and G. magellanica did not exceed 12%. Another significant effect of UV‐B attenuation was a promotion of insect herbivory in G. magellanica, with a 25–75% increase in the leaf area consumed. Changes in plant phenology or relative species cover were not detected within the time frame of this study. The results suggest that the increase in UV‐B radiation associated with the erosion of the ozone layer might be affecting the functioning of this ecosystem to some degree, particularly by inhibiting the growth of some plant species and by altering plant–insect interactions.  相似文献

Abstract

Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions are – with Polar Regions, mountains and the deep sea – the most extreme environments on Earth because of its low temperatures, dryness, high incidence of solar radiation and low nutrient availability. Nevertheless, microorganisms have successfully colonized these regions. In this study, culturable yeasts from soil samples collected from two different locations, a human-impacted area (Encerrada Bay) and a largely pristine and naturally vegetated area near Lago Escondido city (54°39′0″S, 67°46′48″W) from Tierra del Fuego province, Argentina were identified and characterized at different levels. They were characterized and classified as psychrotolerant and were considered as moderately halotolerant because of their ability to grow in the presence of 1.5?M of NaCl. Yeasts from phylum Ascomycota were affiliated to five genera: Candida, Yarrowia, Debaryomyces, Nadsonia, and Wickerhamiella, whereas from phylum Basidiomycota yeasts were affiliated to six genera: Naganishia, Rhodotorula, Leucosporidum, Tausonia, Cystofilobasidium, and Apiotrichum. Most of the yeasts demonstrated at least one extracellular enzymatic activity (mainly β-glucosidase, esterase, and protease activities). One isolate identified as Tausonia pullulans showed significant activity across the eight enzyme types tested. In light of these findings, Tierra del Fuego province could be considered as a cold environment with a potential source of cold-adapted yeasts producing industrially relevant cold-active enzymes.  相似文献

A new species of Penicillium is described and illustrated. It is represented by two isolates recovered from sandy soils on the shores of Lake Sarmiento, in the Chilean Tierra del Fuego. The new species clearly differs from all species of the genus described so far among the monoverticillate ones, especially by the unique wall ornamentation pattern as viewed with the SEM. It is therefore, described and proposed as a new taxon: Penicillium lacussarmientei sp. nov.  相似文献

Ratios of chlorophyll fluorescence induced by ultraviolet (UV) and bluegreen (BG) radiation [F(UV)/F(BG)] were determined with a Xe‐PAM fluorometer to test the utility of this technique as a means of non‐intrusively assessing changes in the pigmentation and optical properties of leaves exposed to varying UV exposures under laboratory and field conditions. For plants of Vicia faba and Brassica campestris, grown under controlled‐environmental conditions, F(UV‐B)/F(BG) was negatively correlated with whole‐leaf UV‐B‐absorbing pigment concentrations. Fluorescence ratios of V. faba were similar to, and positively correlated with (r2=0.77 [UV‐B]; 0.85 [UV‐A]), direct measurements of epidermal transmittance made with an integrating sphere. Leaves of 2 of 4 cultivars of field‐grown Glycine max exposed to near‐ambient solar UV‐B at a mid‐latitude site (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 34° S) showed significantly lower abaxial F(UV‐B)/F(BG) values (i.e., lower UV‐B epidermal transmittance) than those exposed to attenuated UV‐B, but solar UV‐B reduction had a minimal effect on F(UV‐B)/F(BG) in plants growing at a high‐latitude site (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, 55° S). Similarly, the exotic Taraxacum officinale did not show significant changes in F(UV‐B)/F(BG) when exposed to very high supplemental UV‐B (biologically effective UV‐B=14–15 kJ m?2 day?1) in the field in Tierra del Fuego, whereas a native species, Gunnera magellanica, showed significant increases in F(UV‐B)/F(BG) relative to those receiving ambient UV‐B. These anomalous fluorescence changes were associated with increases in BG‐absorbing pigments (anthocyanins), but not UV‐B‐absorbing pigments. These results indicate that non‐invasive estimates of epidermal transmittance of UV radiation using chlorophyll fluorescence can detect changes in pigmentation and leaf optical properties induced by UV‐B radiation under both field and laboratory conditions. However, this technique may be of limited utility in cold environments where UV and low temperatures can stimulate the production of BG‐absorbing pigments that interfere with these indirect measurements of UV‐transmittance.  相似文献
