The reproduction of apterous and alate morphs of the aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum is compared on the basis of fecundity in 5- and 10-day periods of adult life. Apterae of both species are consistently more fecund than alatae of comparable weight, producing about three more nymphs on average in any 5-day period. The reproductive differences are related to the number and quality of embryos at eclosion and to ovulation rates, both of which in turn appear to be linked to wing-muscle maintenance. These relationships between weight, embryos and reproduction may be used to predict a newly moulted adult aphid's fecundity, a method which may facilitate the assessment of resistance to aphids in new cereal varieties, by obviating lengthy recording of reproduction. The strategies by which alatae of these and other aphid species minimize the difference between their fecundity and that of apterae are discussed.  相似文献

Five spring barleys, grown either in pots out of doors or in the field, were inoculated with barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) using 5, 10, 20 or 50 infective aphids (Rhopalosiphum padi) per plant. Control plants of each variety received no aphids. Infection with all aphid numbers had highly significant adverse effects on all varieties except Cb 1029, an early maturing BYDV-resistant barley of Ethiopian origin. 12583 Co, a locally bred, late maturing barley possessing the same resistance gene as Cb 1029 suffered more in a pot experiment, but less than three susceptible varieties all of which were severely damaged even when few infective aphids were used. Progressive effects with increasing aphid numbers, indicative of dosage response, occurred in some varieties. These effects included delay in heading and increased stunting, but not less yield. In Cb 1029, BYDV infection caused a reduction in the number of heads per plant, but this was partly compensated for by an increase in the number of grains per head. Conversely, BYDV infection in 12583 Co caused an increase in the number of heads, partly offset by a decrease in the number of Brains tier head.  相似文献

Phytophagous insects generally feed on a restricted range of host plants, using a number of different sensory and behavioural mechanisms to locate and recognize their host plants. Phloem-feeding aphids have been shown to exhibit genetic variation for host preference of different plant species and genetic variation within a plant species can also have an effect on aphid preference and acceptance. It is known that genotypic interactions between barley genotypes and Sitobion avenae aphid genotypes influence aphid fitness, but it is unknown if these different aphid genotypes exhibit active host choice (preference) for the different barley genotypes. Active host choice by aphid genotypes for particular plant genotypes would lead to assortative association (non-random association) between the different aphid and plant genotypes. The performance of each aphid genotype on the plant genotypes also has the ability to enhance these interactions, especially if the aphid genotypes choose the plant genotype that also infers the greatest fitness. In this study, we demonstrate that different aphid genotypes exhibit differential preference and performance for different barley genotypes. Three out of four aphid genotypes exhibited preference for (or against) particular barley genotypes that were not concordant with differences in their reproductive rate on the specific barley genotype. This suggests active host choice of aphids is the primary mechanism for the observed pattern of non-random associations between aphid and barley genotypes. In a community context, such genetic associations between the aphids and barley can lead to population-level changes within the aphid species. These interactions may also have evolutionary effects on the surrounding interacting community, especially in ecosystems of limited species and genetic diversity.  相似文献

Thirty-four monosporous isolates ofH. gramineum Rab., the incitant of leaf stripe of barley, were divided in seven categories on the basis of morphological and cultural characters. Seventy-three Indian and American varieties of barley were tested for their reaction against the seven isolates. Detailed observations on prevalence and severity have been taken and a new method has been developed for calculating infection value in each case. There are distinct differences among the isolates in their prevalence and severity on the barley varieties and thus these isolates are distinct races.  相似文献

Summary Exploiters of short-lived plants have evolved strategies in response to physiological changes that occur during the development of their hosts. The ability to adapt to host quality changes is necessary particularly if the mobility of an animal is poor or risk-constrained. In the plant-aphid system Centaurea jaceae-Uroleucon jaceae, the responses of the aphid to the seasonal changes in its host plant grown in poor and good quality soil were investigated. Coarse- and fine-tuned physiological reactions were observed in discrete aphid generations which were reared on plants grown either in a growth chamber or in a greenhouse. The number of ovarioles and developmental time depended on extrinsic factors (length of photoperiod) not directly related to plant quality. The reproductive investment of the aphids was also independent of their total dry weight. However, within the gonadal system high correlations were found at the embryonic level (e.g. the number of sclerotized embryos or the length of the oldest embryos per ovariole were highly correlated with gonadal dry weight). Aphids which were living on the 4-leaf stage of high-quality host plants showed a significantly higher investment in their gonads than aphids feeding on senescenting hosts. Factor analysis corroborated that aphids reared on poor-quality hosts revealed no grouping of variables measured, whereas those which were reared on high-quality plants showed clustering in respect of somatic (tibia length, dry weight of soma) and gonadal (number of sclerotized and unsclerotized embryos, length of the oldest embryos, ovariole number, gonad dry weight) factors. Three different levels of adaptive response to plant quality are distinguished: individual response to host quality, maternal influences on offspring and response to changes not specific to habitat (photoperiod). These different levels of regulation are thought to enable the aphids to adapt to a host of a given nutritional quality and anticipate deteriorating habitat quality simultaneously. It is concluded that physiological constraints in aphids are only revealed when aphids are exposed to severe nutritional stress for several generations.  相似文献

The numbers of cereal aphids, especially Metopolophium dirhodum in 1979, and Sitobion avenae in 1980, were significantly increased on BYDV infected wheat and oats in 1979, and wheat, barley and oats in 1980. The differences were probably caused by attraction of alates of each species to virus infected plants which had changed colour as a result of their infection. Significantly more alates of M. dirhodum were found on virus infected oats in 1979, and of S. avenae on oats and barley in 1980, although not on wheat in either year. probably because the colour contrast in wheat was less intense than in the other crops. Flight chamber experiments with alates of both species confirmed their visual attraction to virus-infected leaves. The interaction between virus, vector and host plants is discussed with reference to the ecology of virus spread.  相似文献

Based on previously performed in vitro studies, which showed that hulless barley varieties could reduce large intestinal Salmonella Typhimurium var. Copenhagen proliferation in pigs, two in vivo experiments were conducted to prove these observations. In Experiment (Exp.) 1, 126 weaning piglets were randomly allocated into pens of seven animals each and fed one of six experimental diets. Three diets contained (75% as-fed) one of three hulless barley varieties with β-glucan (BG) contents ranging from 5 to 11% and amylose from 5 to 40%, and two diets contained a low BG and amylose hulless barley supplemented with isolated barley BG or raw potato starch. A hulled barley diet served as a control. Two piglets per pen (“Trojan” pigs) were orally infected with Salmonella Typhimurium var. Copenhagen (ST). The remaining five pigs per pen were designated “Contact” pigs. The ST shedding was determined over one week after infection. On day 6, the two Trojans and two random Contacts from each pen were euthanised and intestinal contents and mesenteric lymph nodes cultured for ST. Intestinal volatile fatty acids and microbial composition were determined. In Exp. 2, 126 piglets were assigned to one of three diets based on hulled or hulless barleys. The timeline, infection, sampling and analyses were similar as in Exp. 1 except samples were taken from four Contact pigs. Hulless barley varieties with high BG and amylose tended to decrease ST persistence in Exp. 1. Clostridia from cluster I in the colon were reduced with high amylose hulless barley or diets supplemented with potato starch (p < 0.05), whereas other microbial groups were not. Propionate increased (p < 0.05) and acetate decreased (p < 0.05) with hulless barley inclusion. Exp. 2 revealed a reduced ST shedding and reduced number of clostridia for high BG hulless barley as compared to common hulled barley and a low BG variety (p < 0.05). In conclusion, high BG hulless barley do not prevent ST colonisation but might help to reduce transmission in pigs, likely by supporting an intestinal environment limiting growth of this zoopathogen.  相似文献

Some cereal seedlings exhibit antibiotic and antixenotic resistance to the aphids Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), because the seedlings contain hydroxamic acids or gramine. The association between tolerance to aphids and aphid antibiosis was investigated for three cereals, Dollarbird wheat Vulcan wheat and Yagan barley. The dry biomass gained by the aphids and the simultaneous reduction in the biomass of the plants (biomass conversion ratio) quantified tolerance. Biomass production and the density dependence of biomass production by the aphids quantified antibiosis more effectively than fecundity. Vulcan wheat, which has more hydroxamic acid than Dollarbird wheat showed the highest level of antibiosis, and the barley was not antibiotic for either aphid. The biomass conversion ratio was a constant; the biomass of an infested plant was reduced by 3 mg for each mg of aphid biomass gained, regardless of aphid species, plant cultivar, or aphid density. The three plants showed no differential tolerance to the aphids, and therefore tolerance is not associated with antibiosis in this case.  相似文献

Bacterial endosymbionts have enabled aphids to adapt to a range of stressors,but their effects in many aphid species remain to be established.The bird cherry-oat aphid,Rhopalosiphum padi(Linnaeus),is an important pest of cereals worldwide and has been reported to form symbiotic associations with Serratia symbiotica and Sitobion miscanthi L-type symbiont endobacteria,although the resulting aphid phenotype has not been described.This study presents the first report of R.padi infection with the facultative bacterial endosymbiont Hamiltonella defensa.Individuals of R.padi were sampled from populations in Eastern Scotland,UK,and shown to represent seven R.padi genotypes based on the size of polymorphic microsatellite markers;two of these genotypes harbored H.defensa.In parasitism assays,survival of H.defensa-infected nymphs following attack by the parasitoid wasp Aphidius colemani(Viereck)was 5 fold higher than for uninfected nymphs.Aphid genotype was a major determinant of aphid performance on two Hordeum species,a modern cultivar of barley H.vulgare and a wild relative H.spontaneum,although aphids infected with H.defensa showed 16%lower nymph mass gain on the partially resistant wild relative compared with uninfected individuals.These findings suggest that deploying resistance traits in barley will favor the fittest R.padi genotypes,but symbiontinfected individuals will be favored when parasitoids are abundant,although these aphids will not achieve optimal performance on a poor quality host plant.  相似文献

Prior infection of both wheat and barley plants by BYDV predisposed their ears to infection by Cladosporium spp. and Verticillium spp. Aphids and honeydew increased the incidence of Cladosporium on wheat ears but not on barley. This difference between crops was attributed to the larger number ot aphids on the wheat. In the glasshouse, aphids and honeydew, but not honeydew alone, increased Cladosporium populations.  相似文献

In controlled temperature, light and relative humidity, Metopolophium dirhodum and Sitobion avenae multiplied more on young Proctor barley than on Blenda oats, and less on Cappelle wheat. Rhopalosiphum padi increased in number fastest on barley and slowest on oats. More survived, and generation lengths seemed shorter, on barley for M. dirhodum and S. avenae and on wheat for R. padi. Tests with young cereals outdoors generally agreed with those in controlled conditions. On mature plants, there were more M. dirhodum on barley, more R. padi on wheat and more S. avenae on oats than on the other cereals. Given a free choice in large cages outdoors, most aphids were found on barley. When allowed to choose between grasses, more M. dirhodum were on Dactylis glomerata, Poa pratensis and Festuca pratensis, more R. padi on Lolium perenne and F. pratensis, and more S. avenae on D. glomerata and L. perenne. Most aphids of all species combined were on F. pratensis, Lolium and Phleum, and fewest on Festuca rubra and Holcus mollis.  相似文献

30 genera and 77 species, in addition to 4 varieties were isolated from 25 samples of each of barley, wheat, maize and sorghum grains collected from different places in Egypt. The broadest spectrum of genera and species was recorded in wheat (25 genera and 59 species + 4 varieties) followed by barley (21 genera and 52 species + 2 varieties), sorghum (14 genera and 33 species + 2 varieties) and maize grains (11 genera and 29 species + 2 varieties). Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium and Rhizopus were the most common genera in the four grains, except maize where Penicillium emerged in low frequency. Aspergillus was the main component of the fungal flora of the four grains and contributed 79–94.4% of the gross total count of fungi. From the preceding genera A. niger, A. flavus, A. fumigatus, F. oxysporum, P. chrysogenum, P. corylophilum, P. notatum and R. stolonifer were the most frequent.  相似文献

Factorial experiments in 1976–1979 investigated the effects of sowing date, fungicides (ethirimol seed treatments and tridemorph sprays) and insecticides (phorate applied to the soil, and menazon or dimethoate sprays) on powdery mildew, aphids, barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and grain yield of spring barley (cv. Julia in 1976 and 1977; cv. Wing in 1978 and 1979). Late sowing usually increased the severity of powdery mildew, numbers of aphids and incidence of BYDV and generally decreased yield. Responses to pesticides were commonly greater on the late-sown than on the early-sown barley. Response to fungicides are principally attributed to the control of powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei; the target species) but responses to insecticides cannot be attributed to virus control and seem unlikely to be due solely to control of aphids, whose numbers were relatively small. There were some effects of fungicides on aphids and insecticides on mildew, but they were inconsistent and too small to affect crop protection strategies.  相似文献

The present paper dealt with the sequential changes of the distribution pattern of apterous females aphid populations, that were artificially settled at the beginning on the experimental barley ‘field'. The aphids were settled at random or even with a fixed denisty per plant. For five or six days after the settling, the number of individuals followed the negative binomial distributions in all cases while the parameters k and p were varying. The estimated values of k were rather small for the first one week after the settling, which may suggest that the number of moving aphids between plants was relatively small and the degree of concentration expressing the intrinsic increase was high. After that, as the number of individuals increased, the number of moving aphids between plants would be considered to be increased. It was found that with the lapse of time the degree of concentration decreased or k became larger. The distribution of aphids per blade in a plant was also described briefly.  相似文献

Results of glasshouse experiments have confirmed that inbred lines of sugar beet differ in each of three types of resistance to Myzus persicae Sulz. and Aphis fabae Scop., namely: resistance to settling, resistance to multiplication, and tolerance. Resistance to multiplication was not invariably associated with resistance to settling, although plants of some lines showed both forms of resistance. Plants that were resistant to settling of alatae were not always resistant to apterae of the same species, and there was not a close relationship between resistance to M. persicae and to A. fabae. The mechanisms involved in resistance to aphids in sugar beet are not understood. Progenies of plants, selected for resistance to aphids from inbred lines, were often more resistant than progenies of unselected plants. Inheritance of each type of resistance is probably polygenic. The potential value of the different kinds of resistance, in reducing direct feeding damage and controlling the spread of virus yellows in the field, is discussed. The ultimate breeding objective is to produce commercial varieties in which appropriate kinds of resistance to aphids are combined with resistance to virus yellows. The use of such varieties would reduce the need to control aphids in the field by applications of chemicals.  相似文献

Two lines of Viciafaba were as resistant to Aphis fabae as Rastatt, one of their progenitors, when compared with susceptible control varieties in glasshouse experiments. In short experiments, fewer adult aphids settled on plants of resistant varieties, which subsequently bore smaller total numbers of aphids. In a longer experiment, the aphids multiplied more slowly on the resistant varieties, which survived after susceptible beans had been killed. The bean varieties did not vary in numbers of aphids on the stem or growing point but resistant varieties had markedly smaller proportions of the total on the abaxial surface of the leaves; in particular the smaller veins supported fewer aphids. V. narbonensis was very resistant to A. fabae but was susceptible to Myzus persicae, indicating that its resistance mechanism is distinct from that within V. faba. In infested field trials most of the variation in yield of bean varieties was attributable to the size of A. fabae colonies, and resistant varieties outyielded susceptible varieties. Yields of resistant varieties in the presence of large numbers of aphids were, however, less than those from trials without aphids. In uninfested trials susceptible varieties usually gave the largest yields. The significance of these observations is discussed in relation to policies and methods for breeding for resistance to A. fabae in V. faba.  相似文献

Aphis fabae Scopoli (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is heteroecious and polyphagous that is harmful on secondary hosts such as many important agricultural products like beet, common bean, faba bean, potato and other products. This aphid is the cause of more than 33 viral transition. One of the mechanisms of plant resistance is antixenosis. This mechanism influences on placement and nutrition of pests that result in less damage. In this study, antixenosis resistance mechanism of 12 varieties of bean was tested. Experiment was on completely randomised design with 12 treatments and 6 replications. Bean varieties include of white bean, kidney bean and wax bean, and each replication includes one pot, and then, pots were placed under the isolated room that were filled with winged adult aphids in circular form. After 24 and 48?h, aphids and level of nymph production were counted. The lowest number of adult aphids was observed on Sayad variety among 12 varieties (during 24?h). The least number of produced nymphs was in Daneshkade variety. In Sayad variety, the frequency of matured insects and produced nymphs was minimum.  相似文献

Levels of endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) in immature wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Timmo) and barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Golden Promise) embryos have been determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Embryos of both cereal species showed an increase in ABA content during development on the parent plant. Immature embryos were excised and cultured in vitro on nutrient media that led to precocious germination or on media containing 9% (w/v) mannitol that maintained their developmental arrest. Barley and wheat embryos responded to these culture conditions in an identical manner with respect to changes in morphology, fresh weight, protein and lectin content. However, in complete contrast, the ABA content of barley embryos increased by an order of magnitude during culture on mannitol, whereas that of wheat embryos showed no significant change. Resistance to Sitobion avenue and Metopolophium dirhodum was assessed in the glasshouse by releasing immature aphids on uncovered wheat and barley plants at the tillering stage. Six cultivars of winter wheat were tested with S. avenue and of these cv. Kador was resistant and cv. Maris Huntsman susceptible. Among seven cultivars of barley, cv. CI16145 was more resistant to S. avenue than any other whilst cvs Tyra and Nirakei 10 were the most susceptible, but the cultivars did not differ significantly in the numbers of M. dirhodum on them, although there were ranking differences similar to those observed with S. avenue.  相似文献

Using the observed rm/IRGR ratio (0.8–0.9) and that the gonads are smaller than the soma at birth the predicted relation between the logarithm of the adult weight and the logarithm of the birth weight is linear and has a slope of 1.
