The larger-the-better theory predicts that fitness is positively linearly associated with body size or weight. We used the kiwifruit pest, Cnephasia jactatana Walker, to test whether larger insects perform better reproductively. We divided our insect population into three weight groups: light, average, and heavy, and assessed the reproductive performance of 9 breeding treatments (3 male weights × 3 female weights). Female fecundity is positively correlated with female body weight in low and average weight groups. There is no such correlation in the heavy weight group, suggesting that further weight increase has no fitness gain for females. The positive linear relationship between fertility and female weight in all weight groups may be attributed to the fact that permanently paired heavy females are more likely to remate, gaining more sperm and thus higher fertility. However, the previous study also indicates that mated females are less likely to be mated again when males have a choice. Therefore, in the natural environment the realized fertility may still follow an asymptotical pattern similar to the fecundity in relation to female weight. Males' beneficial effect on female reproductive outputs increases linearly with their body weight in all weight groups, indicating that male reproductive performance fits the larger-the-better theory. Fertility rate is not affected by the body weight of either sex. Heavy and average females lay eggs earlier and have higher daily fecundity and fertility than light females. Females of all weight groups have similar oviposition and postoviposition periods. Male weight and female–male weight interactions have no effect on oviposition parameters.  相似文献

Background

Nearly 50% of U.S. women of child-bearing age are overweight or obese, conditions linked to offspring obesity and diabetes.

Methods

Utilizing the sheep, females were fed a highly palatable diet at two levels of overfeeding designed to induce different levels of maternal body weight increase and adiposity at conception, and from conception to midgestation. Fetal growth and organ development were then evaluated at midgestation in response to these two different levels of overfeeding. Ewes were fed to achieve: 1) normal weight gain (control, C), 2) overweight (125% of National Research Council [NRC] recommendations, OW125) or 3) obesity (150% of NRC recommendations, OB150) beginning 10 wks prior to breeding and through midgestation. Body fat % and insulin sensitivity were assessed at three points during the study: 1) diet initiation, 2) conception and 3) mid-gestation. Ewes were necropsied and fetuses recovered at mid-gestation (day 78).

Results

OB150 ewes had a higher % body fat than OW125 ewes prior to breeding (P = 0.03), but not at mid-gestation (P = 0.37). Insulin sensitivity decreased from diet initiation to mid-gestation (P = 0.04), and acute insulin response to glucose tended to be greater in OB150 ewes than C ewes (P = 0.09) and was greater than in OW125 ewes (P = 0.02). Fetal crown-rump length, thoracic and abdominal girths, and fetal perirenal fat were increased in the OW125 and OB150 versus C ewes at mid-gestation. However, only fetal heart, pancreas, and liver weights, as well as lipid content of fetal liver, were increased (P < 0.05) in OB150 ewes versus both C and OW125 ewes at midgestation.

Conclusions

These data demonstrate that different levels of overfeeding, resulting in differing levels of maternal weight gain and adiposity prior to and during pregnancy, lead to differential effects on fetal overgrowth and organ development.  相似文献

Forty white rats were raised and mated in a controlled environment at 22°C. Twelve hours after parturition they were mated and separated into two equal groups. One group (control) remained at 22°C whilst the second group(desert) was kept in an open shed during July (daily temperature range: 18 to 37°C). The rats were sacrificed at 18 days post partum. Control rats ate 25% more food than desert rats; water consumption was the same in both groups. Body weights were initially similar, but from 12 days post partum onwards, the control rats increased their body weight at a significantly higher rate than did the desert rats. Milk production, assessed by litter weight gains, was higher in control group rats. Body composition and organ weights were similar except for the gut of the control group which was heavier. The number of CORPORA LUTEA was significantly lower in the desert group as were conception rates and embryo numbers; the weight of individual embryos and the weight of embryo per dam were, however, significantly higher in the desert group. It was postulated that during early pregnancy, maternal weight and mammary tissue may have preference over the uterus for nutritional sources, whilst in later pregnancy the embryos may have preference.  相似文献

Male mice consumed liquid alcohol diets containing 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, or 0% ethanol-derived calories (EDC). Animals receiving the 20-0% EDC diets were pair-fed to those consuming the 25% EDC diet. After 7 weeks of consumption males were bred to nontreated females. Offspring were tested for activity at 16-20 and 75 days of age. Offspring sired by alcohol-consuming males did not differ from controls in litter size, birth weight, or weight at weaning, but were less active than controls on several measures of activity. Many of these decreases were best defined in terms of linear trends. However, these differences were evident only for animals tested prior to 20 days of age for most activity measures. In a second experiment adult males continued to consume alcohol for another 7 weeks and were bred again. Offspring of this second breeding were tested for activity at 16 days of age and were compared with offspring sired by the same father from the previous breeding. Offspring sired after this longer duration of paternal alcohol consumption did not differ significantly from controls in any of the above-mentioned variables.  相似文献

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an essential component of epoxy resins used in the lacquer lining of metal food cans, as a component of polycarbonates, and in dental sealants. The present study was conducted in an attempt to evaluate the adverse effects of the environmental estrogen BPA on initiation and maintenance of pregnancy and embryofetal development after maternal exposure during the entire period of pregnancy in Sprague-Dawley rats. The test chemical was administered by gavage to mated females from days 1 to 20 of gestation (sperm in varginal lavage = day 0) at dose levels of 0, 100, 300, and 1000 mg/kg. All females were subjected to caesarean section on day 21 of gestation and their fetuses were examined for external, visceral and skeletal abnormalities. In the 1000 mg/kg group, significant toxic effects including abnormal clinical signs, decreased maternal body weight and body weight gain, and reduced food consumption were observed in pregnant rats. An increase in pregnancy failure was also found in the successfully mated females. In addition, increased number of embryonal deaths, increased postimplantation loss, reduced litter size and fetal body weight, and decreased number of fetal ossification centers of several skeletal districts were seen. On the contrary, no significant changes induced by BPA were detected in the number of corpora lutea and implantation sites and by fetal morphological examinations. In the 300 mg/kg group, suppressed maternal body weight and body weight gain, decreased food intake and reduced body weight of male fetuses were seen. There were no adverse signs of either maternal toxicity or developmental toxicity in the 100 mg/kg group. It was concluded that BPA administration during the entire period of pregnancy in rats produced pregnancy failure, pre- and postimplantation loss, fetal developmental delay and severe maternal toxicity, but no embryo-fetal dysmorphogenesis at an oral exposure level of 1000 mg/kg.  相似文献

Male CD-1 mice were exposed to Tordon 202c (a picloram and 2,4-D combination herbicide) in the drinking water at concentrations of 0.21, 0.42, and 0.84% solutions for 60 days prior to mating with untreated females. Subsequently there was no exposure to Tordon 202c during gestation. Fetal weight and crown-rump length were reduced in the highest dosage group. The incidence of malformed fetuses (e.g., ablepharon, cleft palate, and unilateral agenesis of the testes) was increased in the middle dosage group while the incidence of fetuses with variants was increased in the lowest (e.g., an extra pair of ribs) and the highest dosage groups (e.g., incomplete ossification of the skeleton). The frequency of pregnancy failure was increased in the middle dosage group. Indices of paternal toxicity included increased lethality and decreased water consumption in the highest dosage group and increased relative spleen weights in the lowest and middle dosage groups. The results suggest paternally mediated reproductive toxicity.  相似文献

An acute injection of an intoxicating dose of alcohol to male rats 24 hours prior to breeding with drug-naive females produced no discernible effect on copulatory activity, as reflected in vaginal plugs, but resulted in markedly (>50%) reduced pregnancy rates. Fetal outcome was also markedly affected in offspring sired by alcohol-treated males: litter sizes were appreciably smaller (30%) and fetal mortality was more than 2 times higher than in controls. These results suggest that paternal alcohol use, like maternal alcohol abuse, may adversely affect fertility and fetal outcome.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Sodium thioglycolate, which has widespread occupational and consumer exposure to women from cosmetics and hair‐care products, was evaluated for developmental toxicity by topical exposure during the embryonic and fetal periods of pregnancy METHODS: Timed‐mated Sprague–Dawley rats (25/group) and New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits (24/group) were exposed to sodium thioglycolate in vehicle (95% ethanol:distilled water, 1:1) by unoccluded topical application on gestational days (GD) 6–19 (rats) or 6–29 (rabbits) for 6 hr/day, at 0, 50, 100, or 200 mg/kg body weight/day (rats) and 0, 10, 15, 25, or 65 mg/kg/day (rabbits). At termination (GD 20 rats; GD 30 rabbits), fetuses were examined for external, visceral, and skeletal malformations and variations. RESULTS: In rats, maternal topical exposure to sodium thioglycolate, at 200 mg/kg/day (the highest dose tested) on GD 6–19, resulted in maternal toxicity, including reduced body weights and weight gain, increased relative water consumption and one death. Treatment‐related increases in feed consumption and changes at the application site occurred at all doses, in the absence of increased body weights or body weight change. Fetal body weights/litter were decreased at 200 mg/kg/day, with no other embryo/fetal toxicity and no treatment‐related teratogenicity in any group. In rabbits, maternal topical exposure to sodium thioglycolate on GD 6–29 resulted in maternal dose‐related toxicity at the dosing site in all groups; no maternal systemic toxicity, embryo/fetal toxicity, or treatment‐related teratogenicity were observed in any group. CONCLUSIONS: A no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) was not identified for maternal toxicity in either species with the dosages tested. The developmental toxicity NOAEL was 100 mg/kg/day (rats) and ≥65 mg/kg/day (rabbits; the highest dose tested). The clinical relevance of theses study results is uncertain because no data were available for levels, frequency, or duration of exposures in female workers or end users. It is known that as parity increases, cell-mediated immunity to paternal antigens increases in mice. The article reports an experiment designed to compare the results of normal parity with artificial immunization simulating maternal sensitization to paternal antigens in mice. Virgin females were immunized at weekly intervals by intraperitoneal injections of 50 mcl of heparinized blood from males with whom they would eventually be mated. The immunized virgins and multiparous females were mated for 4 to 6 weeks after their last injection or litter. The total and live litter size increased with immunization; the total size with natural parity also increased though the live litter size slightly decreased with parity. The mean fetal death rate was relatively the same for both groups. Fetal weight increased with parity but not change was observed in placental weight. Both fetal and placental weight did not change with immunization. There was no increase in the expected number of male fetuses. The increased litter size in the immunized group may be due to increased ovulation rates.  相似文献

The effects of acceleration and delay of puberty in female house mice on survival and reproduction were tested using 6 experimental groups: (1) control females mated at the time of first oestrus, (2) females mated at weaning, (3) females treated with male urine starting at weaning and mated at first oestrus, (4) females housed in groups and mated at first oestrus, (5) females housed alone, treated with urine from grouped females and mated at first oestrus, and (6) females housed alone and mated at 68 days of age. Females caged with males at weaning or treated with male urine and mated at puberty had lower rates of survival to 180 days of age, but did not differ in rates of fertility from mice in the other four treatments. Those females that were housed with males from weaning or treated with male urine also had smaller total numbers of litters, fewer total young, and smaller average litter sizes than did females for which the age of mating was delayed, by grouping or treatment with urine from grouped females, or by being held until age 68 days before mating. Control females mated at first oestrus generally were intermediate or did not differ from the male treatments on these dependent variables. There were no differences in the average number of female young/litter across the 6 treatments. However, females that were delayed in age of first mating had significantly more male young/litter than did females that were accelerated in their sexual development or control females.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Prolactin secreting pituitary adenomas (prolactinomas) is the most common pituitary tumors in humans. Animal studies have identified aggressive prolactinoma development in fetal alcohol exposed rats. We have recently identified a combination treatment of a μ opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone and a δ opioid receptor agonist D-Ala2-,N-Me-Phe4,Gly-ol Enkephalin (DPDPE) increases innate immune function. In this study, we tested whether naltrexone and DPDPE combination therapy is useful to control pituitary tumor growth. Fetal alcohol exposed and control Fischer 344 female rats at 60 days of age were ovariectomized and received an estrogen implant to induce prolactinomas. Six weeks after the estrogen implant, these animals received treatments of naltrexone and DPDPE or saline. The growth of the pituitary tumor prior to and after opioidergic agent treatments was visualized using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). At the end of the treatment, pituitary weights, plasma prolactin and splenic levels of cytotoxic factors were determined. Both imaging data and weight data indicated that the volume and the weight of the pituitary were increased more after estrogen treatment in animals exposed to fetal alcohol than control. Naltrexone and DPDPE treatment reduced the weight and volume of the pituitary gland and plasma levels of prolactin in both fetal alcohol exposed and control-fed animals. The treatment of opioidergic agents also increased the levels of cytotoxic factors in the spleen. These data provide a novel possibility in treating pituitary tumors using a combination therapy of naltrexone and DPDPE.  相似文献

Two groups of 26 male and 26 female rats at the initial age 30 ± 2 days were fed during 31 weeks on diets containing 20 percent of yellow lupin seeds having low (LG) or high (HG) gramine content. The animals were mated twice within nutritional groups, 1 male: 1 female, and their main reproductive parameters were recorded. In both reproductive cycles body weight of females at mating, after parturition and after 21‐days lactation was lower in HG than in LG group. Fertility rate and body weight of neonates were not affected by the diet while number of neonates per litter tended to be lower by 0.7 and 0.8 pups in HG than in LG group. Body weight of weaners was also substantially smaller in dams fed on HG than LG diet. Relative weight of spleen but not of liver, kidney and heart was significantly greater in HG females. Four weeks old males and females issued from the first litters born to LG and HG animals (ten males and ten females per treatment) were fed individually on respective diets during 3 weeks. Feed intake and growth rate did not differ between the treatments. In males relative weight of liver and testicles was greater, while hematocrit and red blood count were lower in HG than in LG group. In females organ weights did not differ. Activity of liver enzymes determined in males was not affected by the diet. It may be concluded that high‐gramine lupin affects negatively lactational performance, probably via lower feed intake, but it does not induce apparent teratogenic effects in the progeny.  相似文献

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) describes a pattern of dysmorphogenesis observed in some offspring of women who consumed alcohol during pregnancy; partial expression of this pattern are fetal alcohol effects (FAE). The purpose of this investigation was to measure selected craniofacial parameters in the CD-1 mouse fetus following exposure to alcohol on gestational day (D) 8. CD-1 mice were mated for 1 hr; D0.0 designated by the presence of a vaginal plug. On D8, 0 hr, and D8, 4 hr, 33 dams were injected intraperitoneally (IP) with 25% (v/v) alcohol in physiological saline solution (0.015 ml/gm maternal body weight). Appropriate controls were maintained. The animals were sacrificed every 12 hr from D12.0 through D17.0. Implantation sites were examined and recorded as live, dead, or resorbed fetuses. All live fetuses were weighed, examined for gross defects, and fixed in Bouin's solution. Twenty-three bilateral parameters were recorded for linear dimensions defining face and cranium. The fetal weights were statistically lower in treated as compared to control fetuses only on D16.0 through D17.0. Statistical analysis of the morphometrics identified five distinct growth patterns in treated mice as compared to controls. The anomalies induced in the CD-1 mouse fetus following exposure to alcohol on D8.0 resembled FAE rather than FAS. Morphometric analysis of the craniofacial region may be an important clinical tool for the quantitative identification of alcohol-related effects in the offspring of women who consumed alcohol while pregnant.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the potential adverse effects of di-2-ethylhexyl terephthalate (DEHT) on reproductive capability from exposure of F(0) and F(1) parental animals. METHODS: Four groups of male and female Crl:CD (SD)IGS BR rats (30/gender/group) were exposed to 0, 0.3%, 0.6%, and 1.0% DEHT in the feed for at least 70 consecutive days before mating for the F(0) and F(1) generations. Exposure for the F(0) and F(1) males continued throughout the mating period until euthanasia. Exposure for the F(0) and F(1) females continued throughout mating, gestation, and lactation. The F(1) and F(2) pups were weaned on postnatal day (PND) 21. Assessments included gonadal function, estrous cyclicity, mating behavior, conception rate, gestation, parturition, lactation, and weaning in the F(0) and F(1) generations, and F(1) generation offspring growth and development. RESULTS: DEHT exposure did not affect clinical observations. However, lethality was observed in F(0) and F(1) dams consuming the 1.0% diet during the post-weaning period. No treatment-related mortality occurred in any of the male groups exposed to DEHT or in the female groups exposed to 0.3% or 0.6% DEHT. Male rats consuming the 1.0% diet in both parental generations gained weight more slowly than the controls. There were no indications of adverse effects on reproductive performance in either the F(0) or F(1) generation. Male and female mating and fertility indices, pre-coital intervals, spermatogenic endpoints, reproductive organ weights, lengths of estrous cycle and gestation, live litter size, developmental landmarks, and postnatal survival were similar in all exposure groups. Additionally, ovarian follicle counts for the F(1) females in the high-exposure group were similar to the control values. No adverse exposure-related macroscopic pathology was noted at any exposure level in the F(0) and F(1) generations. CONCLUSIONS: Increases in liver weights were found in the male and female animals exposed to 0.6% or 1.0% DEHT in the diet. Because there were no accompanying histopathologic changes, this effect was not considered adverse. Significant decreases in feed consumption in the female animals from the groups consuming 1.0% DEHT in the diet during lactation accompanied reduced postnatal pup body weights and rate of weight gain. Reductions in pup body weights later in lactation may also have been due to direct consumption of the treated feed by the pups or taste aversion to the same. Reduced relative spleen weight was found in male weanling pups from the 1.0% group in both generations and reduced relative spleen and thymus weights were found in female pups from the 1.0% group in the F(2) generation at necropsy on PND 21. Therefore, for parental and pup systemic toxicity, 0.3% DEHT in the diet (182 mg/kg/day) was considered no-observed-effect level (NOEL). The 1.0% DEHT (614 mg/kg/day) in the diet exposure concentration was considered a NOEL for F(0) and F(1) reproductive toxicity endpoints.  相似文献

The aim was to investigate whether placental growth and hence pregnancy outcome could be altered by switching adolescent dams from a high to a moderate nutrient intake, and vice-versa, at the end of the first trimester. Embryos recovered from adult ewes inseminated by a single sire were transferred in singleton to peripubertal adolescents. After transfer, adolescent ewes were offered a high (H, n = 33) or moderate (M, n = 32) level of a diet calculated to promote rapid or moderate maternal growth rates, respectively. At Day 50 of gestation, half the ewes had their dietary intakes switched, yielding 4 treatment groups: HH, MM, HM, and MH. A subset of ewes were killed at Day 104 of gestation to determine maternal body composition in relation to growth of the products of conception. Maternal body composition measurements revealed that the higher live weight in the high-intake dams was predominantly due to an increase in body fat deposition, with a less pronounced increase in body protein. At Day 104, HH and MH groups (high intake during second trimester) compared with MM and HM groups (moderate intake during second trimester) had a lower (p < 0.002) total fetal cotyledon weight; but fetal weight, conformation, and individual organ weights were not significantly influenced by maternal dietary intake. In ewes delivering live young at term, a high plane of nutrition from the end of the first trimester (HH and MH groups) compared with moderate levels (MM and HM groups) was associated with a reduction in gestation length (p < 0.009), total placental weight (p < 0.002), total fetal cotyledon weight (p < 0.001), and mean fetal cotyledon weight per placenta (p < 0.001). Fetal cotyledon number was dependent on maternal dietary intake during the first trimester only and was lower (p < 0.007) in HH and HM ewes compared to MM and MH ewes. The inhibition of fetal cotyledon growth in HH and MH groups was associated with a major decrease (p < 0.001) in lamb birth weight at term relative to the MM and HM groups. Thus, reducing maternal dietary intake from a high to a moderate level at the end of the first trimester stimulates placental growth and enhances pregnancy outcome, and increasing maternal dietary intake at this time point has a deleterious effect on placental development and fetal growth.  相似文献

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an anti-inflammatory and immune-deviating cytokine expressed in the endometrium and placenta. IL-10 null mutant (IL-10-/-) mice have been employed to examine the role of IL-10 in regulating immune events in early pregnancy and its significance in implantation and pregnancy success. The inflammatory response elicited in endometrial tissue by insemination was amplified in IL-10-/- mice, with a 66% increase in leukocytes in the endometrial stroma on Day 3 of pregnancy. Despite this, no evidence of abnormal type 1/type 2 skewing was seen in T-lymphocytes from lymph nodes draining the uterus. On Day 18 of gestation, IL-10-/- females mated with IL-10-/- males had 15% more implantation sites and 27% more viable fetuses than pregnant wild-type (IL-10+/+) mice. Placental weight was unaffected, but fetal weight and the fetal:placental weight ratio were higher in IL-10-/- pregnancies. Similar data were obtained in allogeneic pregnancies when IL-10-/- females were mated with major-histocompatibility complex (MHC) disparate IL-10-/- males. Pups delivered by IL-10-/- mothers had increased birth weight and followed an altered growth trajectory, with growth impairment evident from early postnatal life into adulthood, which was reflected in alterations in body composition at 14 wk of age. This study shows that although IL-10 is not essential for maternal immune tolerance or successful pregnancy irrespective of MHC disparity in the fetus, maternal IL-10 is a determinant of growth trajectory in progeny in utero and after birth.  相似文献

This paper determines the influence of initial age at mating on the primary sex-ratio of the two-spotted spider miteTetranychus urticae Koch. The specific question asked is whether females that mate at ages beyond ecdysis, or are inseminated at ecdysis by virgin males of set ages, have daughter productions different from control females mated at ecdysis by randomly aged males.Age of initial female mating did not effect survival. Females mated at ecdysis produced more daughters than those mated at age 5 or 10 days. However, daughter production was equal for all female treatments in the post-mating period. All treatments stopped producing daughters at approximately the same age, regardless of when mated. Son production was lowest for females mated at ecdysis. However, son production by females mated when 5 or 10 days old was lower than that of females mated at ecdysis.Male age at mating did not effect female survival. Females exposed to virgin males either 1 or 7 days old produced more daughters than those exposed to males either 11 or 20 days of age. However, a substantial proportion of females in these latter cohorts were not mated. If only mated females are considered, daughter production is the same between all cohorts.Delayed age at first mating influenced sex-ratio only via the females, specifically by changes in daughter production (as opposed to changes in survivorship). Daughters that would have been produced between ecdysis and mating were never recovered by females that mated at ages beyond ecdysis. Thus, these daughters were lost from a sex-ratio viewpoint. Initial age of male mating did not change sex-ratio.  相似文献

Mated CD-1 mice were exposed to 20-kHz sawtooth magnetic fields similar to those associated with video display terminals (VDT). Four groups of animals were continuously exposed from day 1 to day 18 of pregnancy to field strengths of 0, 3.6, 17, or 200 microT. There were no less than 185 mated dams in each exposure group. On day 18, the dams were sacrificed and assessed for weight gain and pregnancy. The litters were evaluated for numbers of implantations, fetal deaths and resorptions, gross external, visceral and skeletal malformations, and fetal weights. There were no less than 140 pregnant females in each group, and there were no significant differences between any of the exposure groups and the sham group (0 microT) for any of the end points. The results of this study do not support the hypothesis that the 20-kHz VLF magnetic fields associated with video display terminals are teratogenic in mammals.  相似文献

Fetuses from gilts with estrogen receptor (ESR) genotype AA (AA-AA and AA-AB) and BB (BB-AB and BB-BB) were compared at Day 35/36 of pregnancy, to examine whether fetal ESR genotype nested within maternal ESR genotype would affect fetal traits. Furthermore the relation of fetal body weight and fetal heart weight to various placental traits were evaluated relative to ESR genotype. Fetal and placental weight and length, and implantation surface area were not affected by fetal ESR genotype nested within maternal ESR genotype. Fetal weight was related similarly to placental length, placental weight, and implantation surface area: up to a certain threshold value (40 cm, 40 g and 250 cm2, respectively), an increase in the trait was associated with an increase of fetal weight. Thereafter, fetal weight did not change anymore. Thus, at Day 35/36 of pregnancy porcine fetuses seem to have a maximum growth potential. The percentage of AA-AA fetuses that had not reached this maximum growth potential was larger than of the other three genotype combinations studied, and therefore a higher subsequent fetal mortality may be expected in this group. Hearts of AA-AB fetuses were significantly heavier than those of BB-AB and BB-BB fetuses and tended to be heavier than those of AA-AA fetuses. The reason for this hypertrophy is unclear, but might be related to a difference in placental vascularity. Heart weight of fetuses from BB gilts increased with fetal weight, while heart weights of fetuses from AA gilts did not. Heart weight increased with an increase of placental length and implantation surface area up to 51 cm and 437 cm2, respectively, and thereafter decreased again. For BB-AB fetuses a similar relation was found between heart weight and placental weight, while heart weight of the other three genotype combinations remained unaffected as placental weight increased. The fetus and placenta are continuously changing during early pregnancy, therefore different mechanisms may change the demands for cardiac output. However, keeping in mind that placental size and blood volume are relatively large, placental vascularity and vascular development may play a major role. Therefore, further research on heart size, placental size and vascularity, relative to ESR genotype, is recommended.  相似文献

Effects of alternating magnetic fields (MFs) on the embryonic and fetal development in CBA/Ca mice were studied. Mated females were exposed continuously to a sinusoidal 50 Hz (13 μT or 0.13 mT root mean square) or a sawtooth 20 kHz (15 μT peak-to-peak) MF from day 0 to day 18 of pregnancy for 24 h/day until necropsied on day 18. Control animals were kept under the same conditions without the MF. MFs did not cause maternal toxicity. No adverse effects were seen in maternal hematology and the frequency of micronuclei in maternal bone marrow erythrocytes did not change. The MFs did not increase the number of resorptions or fetuses with major or minor malformations in any exposure group. The mean number of implantations and living fetuses per litter were similar in all groups. The corrected weight gain (weight gain without uterine content) of dams, pregnancy rates, incidences of resorptions and late fetal deaths, and fetal body weights were similar in all groups. There was, however, a statistically significant increase in the incidence of fetuses with at least three skeletal variations in all groups exposed to MFs. In conclusion, the 50 Hz or 20 kHz MFs did not increase incidences of malformations or resorptions in CBA/Ca mice, but increased skeletal variations consistently in all exposure groups.
