The social organization of the sexually dimorphic and dichromatic Crescent Honeyeater Phylidonyris pyrrhoptera (Latham 1801) was studied at Wilsons Promontory National Park between January 1994 and January 1997. All breeding attempts at one site were followed during the spring and summer of 1996. Most pairs were multibrooded, with pair-bonds maintained throughout the study. Breeding males held well-defined territories. Females, although generally restricting their activities to within their mate’s territory, visited other males’ territories more frequently than did their mates and did so close to the time of egg laying. Males aggressively chased intruding males, but appeared to permit intrusions by non-mate females. Circumstantial evidence suggests some males may kill neighbour’s nestlings. Female Crescent Honeyeaters are solely responsible for nest construction and incubation. While both sexes attended nestlings, males contributed to parental care significantly less than females. Males also provided significantly less parental care than has been reported for monomorphic species of honeyeater. Single syllable calls are given throughout the year. Peaks in the rate of double and multisyllable calls corresponded with peaks in breeding activity. Only males were observed uttering loud multisyllable calls. In contrast to predictions arising from sexual selection theory and observations of the mating system of sexually dimorphic hummingbirds, the population of Crescent Honeyeaters studied exhibited a socially monogamous mating system. However, the very limited male role in parental care and non-observance of male territory boundaries by females suggest the genetic mating system may not be one of monogamy.  相似文献

The ecology of two intermittent streams in Victoria, Australia   总被引:13,自引:2,他引:13  
1. We compared aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblage composition within and between habitats (pools and riffles) at four sites on two intermittent streams in Victoria, Australia during a drought year followed by a wetter year to see how different spatial and temporal scales influenced patterns of community structure detected by multivariate techniques of ordination and classification. We also examined the fit between faunal groups and ‘flow phases’ characterized by multivariate analyses of physicochemical variables in an earlier paper. 2. Pools contained more taxa and individuals than riffles. At the more temporary site, there was considerable overlap between the faunal composition of pools and riffles, whereas habitat-specific assemblages consistently occurred at the more permanent sites. Most taxa were either tolerant, permanent stream forms able to persist in streams that dry briefly, or facultative species that occur in lotic or lentic habitats. Few species appeared specifically adapted to temporary waters. 3. Within habitats, there were some matches between faunal groups and flow phases, especially with the onset of the ‘diminishing flow’ phase, characterized by rising water temperature and conductivity, and declining pH and dissolved oxygen. However, disjunctions among faunal groups were less marked than those between flow phases, and were absent at an intermediate scale when habitats were pooled within sites. At the broadest scale of analysis (within habitats between sites and years), historical events (e.g. whether pools upstream dried completely during the previous summer) apparently influenced community composition as much as site-specific abiotic differences.  相似文献

Abstract

The ability of eight mosses to with stand the harsh environment of a coastal sand-dune in Victoria (Australia) has been investigated. It is shown that some species are able to re-vegetate areas which have been disturbed by wind, rabbits and vehicles. Their differing performances in relation to growth, rhizoid strength, and withstanding salt spray and sand burial, equip them for different niches. The ratio of dry weights of gametophore/rhizoids is suggested as an indicator of stage of revegetation.  相似文献

Summary At Birthday Ridge, a small ice free area in northern Victoria Land (70°48S, 167°00E), cryptogamic vegetation is mostly confined to gaps between granitc rocks. The sheltering effect on lichens and mosses was analyzed by continuous measurements of the microclimate at various levels between the rocks. Although warming by solar radiation was favourable for the existence of cryptogams, rocks strongly insolated were mostly devoid of lichens and mosses. Lichens in the soaked active state were heated to above air temperature but did not reach more than 10°C. The presence of lichens was dependent on the moisture conditions of the habitat. It was observed that snow, the only source of moisture, accumulated in summer only in deeper levels between rocks, and that the snow rapidly melted on contact with the lichens. After a snow shower,Usnea sulphurea gained 67% andUmbilicaria decussata 94% of their maximum water capacity. During one quarter of the time period of 7 days the lichens were soaked and therefore capable of carrying out photosynthesis. The lichens in soaked state had always less than optimum temperatures for net photosynthesis. The rock gaps at Birthday Ridge form oases, the only localities where moisture is provided, and temperature is high enough to enable growth of lichens and mosses.Bryum is also able to exist in the upper 3 cm of soil.  相似文献

The single apparent and potential benefit of hyperbaric oxygen is the great increase in the blood content of dissolved oxygen achieved when pure oxygen is breathed at increased pressure. The design of an economical chamber for this purpose is presented. A large number of physiological measurements (cardiac output, electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, etc.) can be performed on patients or experimental animals within the chamber by use of unique electronic connections in the chamber wall which permits all recording equipment to remain outside. Expected arterial blood oxygen tensions have been achieved in patients studied at 2, 3, and 4 atmospheres. Safety features are emphasized. No complication has resulted in 113 dives over the period January to June 1964, one-half of which were for treatment of patients. The chamber has been used clinically as an adjunct to treatment of shock, certain forms of malignancy, anaerobic infections, coronary occlusion, and problems of ischemia, and for preservation of organs for transplantation.  相似文献

Abstract The ecologies of seven desert species of monitor lizards (Varanus), which are very variable in size, are described and compared. Data are reported on abundance, anatomy, behaviour, body temperature relationships, daily activity patterns, diet, growth, habitat and microhabitat, prey size, reproduction, seasonal patterns of activity, sexual dimorphisms, and tracks. As many as six of the seven species occur together in sympatry at one study site. New results reported here are merged with extensive data collected over the past quarter of a century to provide a comprehensive and detailed overview of numerous aspects of the natural history and ecology of the seven species in the Great Victoria Desert. One species of pygmy monitor has evolved large clutch size for unknown reasons. A food web for 40 species of desert lizards is presented. Hutchinsonian ratios of head lengths (larger/smaller) are significantly greater in two observed assemblages of sympatric varanids than in a null model consisting of all possible pairs of species of all Australian varanids. Evolution of body size and the two adaptive radiations of Varanus in Australia are discussed.  相似文献

A total of 141 vascular plant species were recorded from 20 quadrats on five isolated granite outcrops in southern Western Australia. The distributions of common plants, rare plants, trophic guids, and the complete data were analysed with respect to substrate (on sheet granite or scree), location (on granite outcrops), and a broader classification of locations into two western and three eastern outcrops. Most of the observed correlations were in accord with an hypothesis of environmental control that predicts distributions reflecting spatially autocorrelated environmental parameters. However, plant guilds were very strongly correlated with substrate and relatively weakly correlated with location, a result that can be explained by coexistence through geographic replacement and contingent exclusion. Rare plants were more likely to grow on either substrate than were common plants, which contrasts with the supposition that rare plants have limited environmental tolerances, but may have been caused by spatial or temporal mass effects. The Mantel test and its recent extensions allow non-exclusive, competing hypotheses to be distinguished.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Amplitudes in physicochemical features in intermittent streams exceed those in nearby permanent streams and strongly influence macroinvertebrate community structure. Hitherto, seasonal variation in the physicochemistry of intermittent streams has been described only anecdotally; there has been no objective attempt to describe phases of flow that could subsequently be compared with patterns in biotic composition.
2. Multivariate techniques of ordination and classification were applied to environmental data collected from pools and riffles at four sites on two intermittent streams in central Victoria during a drought year followed by a wetter year. A cyclical sequence of How phases was usually evident in poo and riffle habitats at all sites over both years: pre-flow, early flow, main flow, diminishing flow and post-flow. Several spates that occurred during the sampling period only briefly distorted the cyclical pattern.
3. No single variable characterized these phases at each site; instead, the phases represented complex combinations of discharge, current velocity, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, water temperature and time-related variables. This highlights the advantages of an integrative, multivariate approach to seek patterns in environmental data, especially since physicochemical features are often highly inter-correlated.  相似文献

The Gargano Promontory, located on the eastern margin of the Apulia Platform, represents a distinctive Tethyan area where the transition from carbonate platform to adjacent basin is exposed on land. The Albian stratigraphic record, represented by shallow-water, slope and deep-water deposits, provides a good opportunity to investigate the regional response to oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) in different depositional settings by using an integrated, high-resolution micropalaeontological (planktonic foraminifers and calcareous nannofossils) approach. Results show that organic matter preservation is confined to the more distal areas (Marne a Fucoidi Formation), and consists of black shale intervals from the middle and late Albian (Ticinella primula/Prediscosphaera columnata Zones; upper Ticinella praeticinensis Subzone/R. achlyostaurion Zone, respectively). Integrated biostratigraphic data correlate the intervals of black shale deposition to the Urbino and Amadeus levels, previously identified and named in the Umbria-Marche Basin. These black shales record the effects of OAEs 1b and 1c. The biotic changes in the pelagic Albian succession of the Apulian Platform Margin provide evidence for episodes of eutrophication that correlate to the deposition of these black shales. Genetic models for the two episodes of organic matter preservation are proposed, taking into account both global and local controlling factors.  相似文献

Summary Bryophyte flushes in the vicinity of Canada Glacier in S.S.S.I. No. 12, Taylor Valley, Southern Victoria Land, were investigated in order to describe the vegetation present and to investigate factors affecting vegetation distribution. Biomass values from 950 to 1,250 g m–2 (dry weight) and vegetated areas up to 14,450 m2 indicate this is a significant area of bryophyte growth in Southern Victoria Land. The pattern of plant species in relation to water flow was investigated through detailed mapping. This is the first confirmed identification of Bryum argenteum, and Pottia heimii, and the first report of Bryum pseudotriquetrum from this area. Tissue nitrogen values for plants at this site are lower than other reported data, but it seems unlikely this would be a limiting factor for growth. It is concluded that, in this area, summer water flow in conjunction with microtopography has the greatest influence in determining where mosses, cyanobacteria and algae grow.  相似文献

Four riverine animal communities were measured to assess the impact of extensively treated wastewater from a pulp and paper mill on the lower La Trobe River in Victoria, Australia. Benthic macroinvertebrates in channel and bankside habitats were sampled using a new air-lift corer. Population density was expressed in relation to substrate volume. Other communities measured at five sites upstream and downstream of the mill's wastewater outfall were the zooplankton, and the animals associated with submerged littoral vegetation. Ten environmental variables were also measured during the two sampling periods.A total of 50 benthic macro-invertebrate taxa were dominated by Oligochaeta, Chironomidae and Bivalvia. Benthic communities upstream and downstream of the outfall were very similar. Benthic samples showed large unexplained variation between stations and seasons, despite the similarity of stations and the stratified sampling design, but within-sample variation was small. There was some evidence that benthic faunal patchiness was associated with patterns of stream-bed scouring and deposition in periods of high flow. Littoral samples collected 28 taxa, dominated by Decapoda and Hemiptera. The benthic and littoral communities were quite distinct, with only three species common to both.Only two of the biological and environmental variables responded to wastewater from the mill: total dissolved solids rose by 20–25% over upstream levels; and zooplankton density increased by 2–3 orders of magnitude. It was concluded that wastewater treatment had successfully avoided the major environmental problems often associated with pulp and paper mills.  相似文献

The ecology of 0- and 1-group turbot was studied at Borth, Cardiganshire, during the years 1966–68. Newly-metamorphosed turbot appeared in the surf zone from July to October, Abundance during the period September 1967 to May 1968 decreased at an average rate of 25% of the sampled population per month. Fish of the 1966 year-class grew from a mean length of 4.5 cm in September 1966 to 14.4 cm in October 1967. Growth was fast in the spring and summer, slowing during the late autumn and winter. The most important food items of 0- and 1-group turbot by percentage occurrence and dry weight were polychaetes and mysids. The daily food intake of 0-group turbot in September 1967 was estimated as 2.5 % of the body weight per day.  相似文献

The stable carbon isotope ratio of fossil tooth enamel carbonate is determined by the photosynthetic systems of plants at the base of the animal's foodweb. In subtropical Africa, grasses and many sedges have C(4)photosynthesis and transmit their characteristically enriched 13C/(12)C ratios (more positive delta13C values) along the foodchain to consumers. We report here a carbon isotope study of ten specimens of Australopithecus africanus from Member 4, Sterkfontein (ca. 2.5 to 2.0Ma), compared with other fossil mammals from the same deposit. This is the most extensive isotopic study of an early hominin species that has been achieved so far. The results show that this hominin was intensively engaged with the savanna foodweb and that the dietary variation between individuals was more pronounced than for any other early hominin or non-human primate species on record. Suggestions that more than one species have been incuded in this taxon are not supported by the isotopic evidence. We conclude that Australopithecus africanus was highly opportunistic and adaptable in its feeding habits.  相似文献

The invertebrate faunal composition of moss-dominated flushes near the Canada Glacier was, as in similar habitats in continental Antarctic regions, numerically dominated by protozoa, rotifers, nematodes and tardigrades. Mites were of lesser abundance. Although collembola occur in the Taylor Valley, none were found at the study site. The finding of a catenulid flatworm is significant as microturbellarians have only rarely been recorded from Antarctica. Nematode, tardigrade and rotifer densities recorded were comparable to those in other Antarctic regions. These groups were found at a mean depth ranging from 5 to 10.83 mm in the moss. A greater percentage of all groups were in the upper 5 mm of moss cores in post-melt samples than in pre-melt samples.  相似文献

The environmental physiology of three speciesof Collembola: Cryptopygus cisantarcticus, Isotoma klovstadi (Isotomidae) and Friesea grisea (Neanuridae) was investigated from November 2002 to February 2003 at Cape Hallett, North Victoria Land, Antarctica. All three species were freeze avoiding, and while supercooling points were variable on seasonal and daily scales in I. klovstadi and C. cisantarcticus, they remained largely static in F. grisea. LT50 (temperature where 50% of animals are killed by cold) was -13.6, -19.1 and -19.8 degrees C for C. cisantarcticus, I. klovstadi and F. grisea, respectively. Upper lethal temperature was 34, 34 and 38 degrees C for C. cisantarcticus, I. klovstadi and F. grisea. Critical thermal minimum onset (the temperature where individuals entered chill coma) was ca. -7, -12 and -8 degrees C for C. cisantarcticus, I. klovstadi and F. grisea, and 25% of I. klovstadi individuals froze without entering chill coma. Critical thermal maximum (the onset of spasms at high temperature) was 30, 33 and 34 degrees C for C. cisantarcticus, I. klovstadi and F. grisea. Haemolymph osmolality was approximately 720 mOsm for C. cisantarcticus and 680 mOsm for I. klovstadi, and both species showed a moderate degree of thermal hysteresis, which persisted through the season. Desiccation resistance was measured as survival above silica gel, and the species survived in the rank order of C. cisantarcticus< I. klovstadi = F. grisea. Desiccation resulted in an increase in haemolymph osmolality in I. klovstadi, and water was quickly regained by desiccation-stressed individuals that had access to liquid water, but not by individuals placed in high humidity, indicating that this species is unable to absorb atmospheric water vapour. SDS-PAGE did not suggest any strong patterns in protein synthesis either seasonally or in response to temperature or desiccation stress. Microclimate temperatures were measured at sites representative of collection sites for the three species. Microclimate temperatures were highly variable on a diurnal and weekly scale (the latter relating to weather patterns), but showed little overall variation across the summer season. Potentially lethal high and low temperatures were recorded at several sites, and it is suggested that these temperature extremes account for the observed restriction of the less-tolerant C. cisantarcticus at Cape Hallett. Together, these data significantly increase the current knowledge of the environmental physiology of Antarctic Collembola.  相似文献
