The stomach contents of Oreochromis niloticus from L. Chamo were microscopically examined and chemically analysed in order to study the relationship between food quality, growth and condition. More than 20 genera of phytoplankton plus Copepoda, Rotifera and nauplii were present in the stomach contents. The diatom, Melosira , was the most dominant alga in the diet, contributing about 30% of the organic matter. The composition of the food in terms of organic nutrients was dominated by carbohydrate (20.3% dry weight). Both protein and fat made low contributions to the diet; 10% and 5.8% dry weight, respectively. The overall performance of the fish in assimilating food was high: 43.3% for ash free dry weight, 61.2% for protein, 57.2% for lipid, 29% for carbohydrate and 55.7% for energy. The digestible protein-energy ratio was 15.7 mg kJ−1, suggesting that the food was qualitatively good both for fast growth and for maintaining good condition. It was concluded that the small amount of good quality food ingested, the low fish population density in the lake and the high temperature of the water are the major factors responsible for making O. niloticus a fast-growing fish in Lake Chamo.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. In the Sydney area of New South Wales, dry weights of reproductive monarch butterflies averaged 156 mg and were higher during winter than in other seasons. Dry weights of non-reproductive monarchs ranged from 216 to 324 mg and declined by 15–25% during over wintering.
2. Fat in reproductive butterflies ranged from 0.009 to 0.017g/0.1g dry weight and was lower during winter than in other seasons. Fat content of non-reproductive monarchs was higher (0.019–0.037 g/0.1g) and declined by 24–51% during over wintering.
3. Lean dry weights of reproductive monarchs were lower than those of non-reproductive individuals. Lean dry weights of non-reproductive butterflies increased rapidly at the beginning of over wintering and remained high throughout the winter. Analysis of protein content indicated the higher lean weight of non-reproductive monarchs was due to greater protein levels.
4. Moisture content of monarchs did not vary with season or reproductive status and appeared to be correlated with ambient humidity.
5. Non-reproductive monarch butterflies in New South Wales adjust bio chemically during over wintering. Energy reserve dynamics of these butterflies are comparable to those that occur in non-reproductive monarchs in North America.  相似文献

Thirty-five swamp wallabies from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, Australia were examined for parasites. Thirty-nine species of nematodes, five species of cestodes and eight species of arthropods were found. Wallabies from Queensland and northern New South Wales had a less diverse helminth fauna (23 species) than did wallabies from southern New South Wales and Victoria (32 species). Rugopharynx spp. and Cloacina spp. occurred in large numbers in the stomach but provoked no pathological changes. Known pathogenic species (Globocephaloides trifidospicularis and Hypodontus macropi) were encountered in small numbers only and did not produce any lesions. Pathological changes associated with parasites were: gastric nodules associated with Labiostrongylus clelandi and Parazoniolaimus collaris, bronchopneumonia due to Marsupostrongylus spp., biliary fibrosis associated with Progamotaenia festiva and fibrous peritonitis, pleuritis, pericarditis and eosinophilic splenitis due to Breinlia mundayi. Echinococcus granulosus was the only parasite found which also occurs in domestic animals.  相似文献

Fruits of Broussonetia papyrifera from South China were analyzed for their total chemical composition, and antioxidant activities in ethanol and aqueous extracts. In the fruit of this plant, the crude protein, crude fat and carbohydrates was 7.08%, 3.72% and 64.73% of dry weight, respectively. The crude protein, crude fat and carbohydrates were 15.71%, 20.51% and 36.09% of dry weight, respectively. Fatty acid and amino acid composition of the fruit were analyzed. Unsaturated fatty acid concentration was 70.6% of the total fatty acids. The percentage of the essential amino acids (EAAs) was 40.60% of the total amino acids. Furthermore, B. papyrifera fruit are rich in many mineral elements and vitamins. Total phenolic content was assessed using the Folin-Ciocalteau assay, whereas antioxidant activities were assessed by measuring the ability of the two extracts to scavenge DPPH radicals, inhibit peroxidation, and chelate ferric ions. Their reducing power was also assessed. Results indicated that the aqueous extract of B. papyrifera was a more potent reducing agent and radical-scavenger than the ethanol extract. GC-MS analysis of the ethanol extract showed the presence of some acid-containing compounds. The changes in total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity in B. papyrifera from four different regions grown under normal conditions were assessed. The antioxidant activity of different extracts was positively associated with their total phenolic content. These results suggest that the fruit of B. papyrifera could be used in dietary supplement preparations, or as a food additive, for nutritional gain, or to prevent oxidation in food products.  相似文献

Thirteen microsatellite loci were developed from an (AG)‐enriched library using Telopea speciosissima, a widespread species of dry‐sclerophyll forest in New South Wales (NSW, Australia). Genotyping of 30 seeds from one population of T. speciosissima and 15 seeds from one population of the related Telopea aspera (restricted to the Gibraltar Range in northern NSW) was successfully performed. The loci were also tested across seven other related species. The microsatellites will be used to compare population dynamics across a range of taxa representing different distribution patterns.  相似文献

Aim The distribution of genetic variation in the Australian dry sclerophyll plant Hardenbergia violacea (Fabaceae) is examined in the context of Pleistocene climate change in order to identify likely refugia. Particular consideration is given to the origin of range disjunctions in South Australia and Tasmania, and to determining whether the Tasmanian population is indigenous or recently introduced from mainland Australia. Location Southeastern Australian mainland and Tasmania. Methods A combination of chloroplast polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism and genomic amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) marker systems was used to examine the genetic structure of 292 individuals from 13 populations across the range of H. violacea in southeastern Australia. Results Hardenbergia violacea populations in Tasmania and southern Victoria were characterized by low, almost monotypic chloroplast diversity. New South Wales showed higher haplotype diversity and haplotype sharing among widely distributed populations. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) of the AFLP data found a strong latitudinal cline in AFLP variation from northern New South Wales south to Tasmania. The Tasmanian population formed an isolated and somewhat disjunct genetic cluster at one end of this cline. However, the South Australian population was an exception to the clinal variation shown by all other populations, forming a highly disjunct cluster in the PCoA. Within‐population genetic diversity was low in both disjunct populations. Main conclusions The genetic evidence indicates that the Tasmanian population is likely to be indigenous and probably the product of vicariance, which was followed by range contraction at the Last Glacial Maximum or an earlier glacial event. The deep phylogenetic disjunction in South Australia is evidence of a much earlier separation on mainland Australia. The chloroplast structure indicates that, during the Pleistocene, H. violacea underwent broad‐scale recolonization in southern Victoria and Tasmania, possibly from a large continental refugium in eastern New South Wales. We conclude that H. violacea, and presumably the sclerophyll communities in which it occurs, have undergone multiple range contractions to large continental refugia during different Pleistocene glaciations in southeastern Australia.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Seasonal changes in population size structure of Gammarus pulex L. in a Cotswold stream appeared to indicate a growth check in late summer.
2. The relationships between dry weight and body length, and between the number of primary flagellar segments on the first antenna and either dry weight or body length provided further evidence of a reduction in growth in mid and late summer.
3. Body fat content was minimal (4% of dry weight) at the end of summer, when large particulate organic detritus was scarce or of poor quality, and maximal in late winter (17.9% dry weight in females; 9.4% in males), after a period of high food availability. In a field experiment, the fat content of animals in summer was raised to levels typical of winter by providing high quality food.
4. Field and experimental evidence together strongly infer that this population of G. pulex was subject to severe food limitation from early summer until leaf fall in autumn.  相似文献

Serum samples collected from 224 tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii) in two captive populations in urban areas in eastern New South Wales Australia, between December 1999 and May 2004, were tested for antibodies to Ross River virus (RRV). In one population in northwest Sydney, 21 animals (11%) tested positive, and in another population in Newcastle, New South Wales, thirteen (33%) of the animals were positive. Antibodies were detected in four of 11 wallaroos (Macropus robustus) (36%) but not in parma wallabies (Macropus parma) (n=5), koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) (n=12) and southern hairy-nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus latifrons) (n=2) from the Sydney area. These data support the possible role of marsupials as urban amplifying hosts for RRV.  相似文献

Abstract

Density‐related variation in queen quality has been proposed as a possible mechanism regulating population fluctuations in Vespula species. We investigated annual variation in the quality (size, weight, and fat content) of adult V. vulgaris queens representing four stages of their life cycle (spring, founding, developing, and emerged) taken from six sites in beech forest, South Island, New Zealand. For each queen the dry weight, head width, and thorax length was measured. For a subsample of queens, the fat content was determined by ether extraction. The size of queen cells was measured from a subsample of nests. Size, weight, and fat content of queens varied between wasp colonies and sites. The smallest juvenile queens were under‐represented in the reproductive population. There was no direct link between body size and food supply. Size and weight of developing queens increased as the number of cells in the nest increased. The size of the queen cells varied significantly among layers in a nest and among nests. The under‐representation of small queens in the reproductive population suggests that queen quality may affect survival and/or competitive ability by increasing winter fat storage, nest building activity, and/or success in usurpation disputes.  相似文献

A suite of models was used to examine the links between climate, fuels and fire behaviour in dry eucalypt forests in south‐eastern Australia. Predictions from a downscaled climate model were used to drive models of fuel amount, the moisture content of fuels and two models of forest fire behaviour at a location in western Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. We found that a warming and drying climate produced lower fine fuel amounts, but greater availability of this fuel to burn due to lower moisture contents. Changing fuel load had only a small effect on fuel moisture. A warmer, drier climate increased rate of spread, an important measure of fire behaviour. Reduced fuel loads ameliorated climate‐induced changes in fire behaviour for one model. Sensitivity analysis of the other fire model showed that changes in fuel amount induced changes in fire behaviour of a similar magnitude to that caused directly by sensitivity to climate. Projection of changes in fire risk requires modelling of changes in vegetation as well as changes in climate. Better understanding of climate change effects on vegetation structure is required.  相似文献

对洞庭湖3种不同生态类型区(农区、林区、农林交错区)不同季节黑线姬鼠消化道各器官长度、鲜重和干重的测量表明,在3种生态类型区中,黑线姬鼠消化道各器官鲜重和干重季节变化显著。农区和林区消化道各器官的鲜重和干重在春季和冬季显著重于夏季和秋季,农林交错区消化道各器官鲜重和干重在春季显著重于夏季和秋季,这可能与春季和冬季黑线姬鼠能量需求增加、食物缺乏和食物质量下降有关。在同一季节,3种生态类型区之间消化道各器官长度、鲜重和干重均无显著性差异。这与3种生态类型区间黑线姬鼠食物变化较小有关。关于消化道各器官长度变化方面,除了农区的大肠长度有显著季节性差异外,其它指标均无显著季节性差异。以上结果表明黑线姬鼠消化道各器官在外界环境因素的影响下能产生不同的反应,消化道形态的变化是黑线姬鼠面临外界胁迫因子时的一种消化对策。  相似文献

OBJECTIVES--To measure the potential for cadaver organ retrieval in New South Wales and to determine the reasons for potential donors failing to become actual donors. DESIGN--Prospective audit of all patients dying in five hospitals in New South Wales between 1 December 1989 and 30 November 1990; quality assurance of the data by independent medical specialist and if disagreement by study committee. PATIENTS--2879 patients (100% of all deaths) yielding 364 patients with coma and 181 potential donors. OUTCOME MEASURES--Realistic medically suitable potential donor rate, missed potential donor rate, rate of potential donors with permission refused, donor rate, reasons for realistic medically suitable potential donors failing to become actual donors. RESULTS--2879 deaths yielded 73 medically suitable potential donors, resulting in 19 actual donors, 30 missed potential donors, 19 potential donors with permission refused, and five in whom adequate resuscitation failed. The most common reason for a potential donor failing to become an actual donor was a decision by the senior medical practitioner to withdraw or not to institute ventilatory or haemodynamic support (26/73). The second major obstacle was refusal of permission by the next of kin (17/73). Assuming that the potential donor rate was that implied by the observed donor rate (13/million population/year) the projected missed potential donor rate was 9/million population/year (95% confidence interval 4 to 15) and the projected rate of potential donors with permission refused was 13/million population/year (95% confidence interval 5 to 22). Assuming that the rate of potential donors in the study hospitals was the same as in the other New South Wales hospitals, the projected donor rate for New South Wales was 18/million population/year (10 to 26); the projected missed potential donor rate was 15/million population/year (7 to 23); and the projected rate of potential donors with permission refused was 18/million population/year (10 to 27). CONCLUSIONS--The donor rate could be increased 70%-80% by overcoming the reluctance of medical practitioners to resuscitate missed potential donors and increased further by gaining permission for organ retrieval from the next of kin.  相似文献

Rabbit warrens are distributed in a clumped manner in three areas totalling 1696 ha in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. While the discontinuous distribution may be partly related to original patterns of colonization, the present distribution is closely related to agricultural practices and the rabbits’biological requirements. The highest densities of warrens are in the agriculturally less valuable areas. The number of burrows in use in a warren is related to the number of rabbits living in the warren, although at the time of the study, large warrens contained fewer rabbits than expected.  相似文献

食粪行为是植食性小型哺乳动物为满足其营养需求所采取的一种适应对策。实验室条件下,限制1月龄和12月龄东方田鼠摄食粪便,测定了限制食粪对食物消化率和体重生长的影响,旨在进一步揭示食粪行为在植食性小型哺乳动物的营养及消化对策中的作用。结果表明,限制食粪使1月龄和12月龄东方田鼠的干物质消化率分别下降27.64 %和7.89 %,粗蛋白消化率分别下降21.39 %和12.68 %;限制食粪可显著抑制东方田鼠的体重增长,且限制食粪对幼体体重的影响较成体明显。因此,研究结果充分验证了限制食粪可降低东方田鼠的食物消化率及抑制其体重生长的假设。  相似文献

Determining quality of food ingested and digestibility can be helpful in understanding the mechanisms that determine trophic plasticity, which is the ability of a given species to use a more advantageous food source at a given time. In this study, the chemical composition and digestibility of food ingested by various trophic fish groups at different sites of the Upper River Paraná floodplain are evaluated. Specimens of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, Prochilodus lineatus, Leporinus friderici, Pterodoras granulosus and Schizodon borellii from the Baía, Ivinheima and Paraná Rivers and from Fechada and Ventura Lagoons were taken as samples (3-16 cm-mesh net). Volume participation analyses of food items were determined and contents from the stomach and the intestine's latter quarter were removed for bromatological analysis (energy, crude protein, ash and dry matter). Internal marker acid-insoluble ash was employed for apparent digestibility coefficients. P. lineatus and P. corruscans had an intake with lower and higher energy and crude protein contents, respectively. P. corruscans had slight variations in food items and composition, whereas P. granulosus had the greatest variation. Whereas P. lineatus had the highest apparent digestibility coefficients in energy, S. borellii showed least variation in diet. P. granulosus and P. lineatus had the higher percentages of dry matter in the stomach in the Paraná River, whereas P. corruscans had similar use in the Baía Rivers and Ventura Lagoon. S. borellii showed low utilization of germanous energy. It may be concluded that the site determined the variation in quality and use of diet by L. friderici, P. granulosus and S. borellii. The generalist species L. friderici demonstrated a good use of different food items ingested at the site; likewise, the generalist species P. corruscans had a similar diet and the same use of food.  相似文献

Daily intake of gross energy (DGEI) and protein (DGPI) of Japanese monkeys in a cool temperature forest were investigated in different four seasons. As a result, dramatic seasonal differences in DGEI and DGPI were found: DGEI and DGPI in winter were significantly lower than those in spring and autumn, being only about 17–42% of those in the two seasons. DGEI and DGPI in summer were also lower than those in autumn and spring, being only about 29–52% of those in the two latter seasons. Seasonal comparisons of some variables on food qualities revealed that much lower values of DGEI and DGPI in winter and summer were influenced srongly not so much by the lower calorie and protein content of food as by the lower speed of dry weight intake. Multiple regression analyses for each food item revealed that the unit weight was a more important factor in determining the speed of dry weight intake than was the speed of unit intake. In addition, the speed of dry weight intake contributed much more to the speed of calorie and protein intake than did the content of calorie and protein. Multiple regression analyses, employing DGEI and DGPI (as dependent variables) and daily mean values of some variables related to food quality (as independent variables), revealed that the mean values of speed of calorie and protein intake on food items eaten in a day could explain 79.0% and 85.9% of the variance in DGEI and DGPI, respectively. In addition, the mean value of the speed of dry weight intake of food items eaten in a day can be used to explain 74.3% and 52.8% of the variance in DGEI and DGPI, respectively. These findings suggested that not only nutritional content of food but also the speed of dry weight intake strongly determined the nutritional condition of nonhuman primates. Am. J. A feeding trial was conducted in 55-1 aquaria indoors with the grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) using fresh duckweed ( Lemna spp.) as food. Faeces dry weight was closely correlated with dry weight of duckweed consumed based upon a linear regression. From this regression, the estimated true digestibility of dry matter was 65%. Samples of duckweed and fish faeces were analysed for crude protein and gross energy. Van Soest's Analysis was conducted on composite samples of duckweed and faeces. Apparent digestibilities were 80% for crude protein, 61% for gross energy, 72% for organic cell contents, and 30% for organic cell wall constituents.  相似文献

目的对普通级新西兰兔进行剖宫产,获得无菌兔,比较无菌兔、SPF兔和普通级兔的脏器系数。方法采取剖宫产手术获得无菌兔,在无菌隔离器内人工哺乳饲养。用电子天平和刻度尺测量无菌兔、SPF兔和普通兔心、肝、脾、肺、肾、肾上腺、胸腺、脑等脏器的脏器重量和长度,计算脏器系数。结果经检测无菌兔符合国家标准;无菌级、SPF级和普通级新西兰兔在左颌下腺、右颌下腺、心脏、肺、胆囊、脾脏、左肾上腺、右肾上腺、子宫+卵巢、左睾丸、胃长、蚓突长度、盲肠长度、盲肠总重、盲肠干重、胃总重、胃干重等17项指标差异显著(P〈0.05);脑、肝脏、左肾、右肾、胰脏、右睾丸、胃宽、小肠长度、直肠长度、大肠长度等10项指标差异不显著(P〉0.05)。结论不同等级微生物环境对新西兰兔脏器系数有显著影响。  相似文献

Decisions to reduce the impacts of large herbivores on biodiversity in protected areas are often based on controlling their numbers. However, numbers per se may not be the foremost consideration when managing impacts. This is because density‐related changes in distribution can also affect habitat utilization and hence, impact. In this study we tested whether changes in the distribution of African elephants are associated with increasing population size. We used spatially explicit count data collected during the dry seasons from 1998 to 2004 in South Africa's Kruger National Park. We did this at five spatial scales and in landscapes defined by vegetation, geology, climate and soils. We then investigated whether observed distributions and grid‐cell‐specific densities were associated with the remotely sensed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a measure of productivity and therefore food resource availability at the landscape scale. Consistent with density mediated changes, we found that elephant grid‐cell occupancy increased with population size, while grid‐cell‐specific density became less variable. In addition, the combined distribution of bull groups and breeding herds became less clumped with increasing population size. We further found that within landscapes elephants were present on grid‐cells with higher NDVI values, but that the influence of NDVI during the dry season on densities among landscapes may be weak. These results suggest that NDVI was more indicative of structural habitat choices such as woody vegetation than food availability per se. Our study highlights the need to consider factors other than population size alone when formulating management decisions to reduce large herbivore impacts on biodiversity in protected areas.  相似文献

Data are presented on proximate analyses of the seeds and tuberous roots of Icacina oliviformis(Icacinaceae) from the Central African Republic. The seeds contain 80.7% nitrogen-free extract (NFE), 14.0% crude protein, and 0.5% crude fat (dry weight). The average moisture content of live seeds is 18.3%. The roots contain 84.5% NFE, 4.4% crude protein, and 1.6% crude fat (dry weight). The moisture content of the fresh root is ca. 59%. These results are comparable to those reported for commonly cultivated crops in the study area. The amino acid profile of the seed protein is comparable to that of a protein of moderately high quality, although digestibility was not tested. From a nutritional point of view, this species warrants consideration for integration into agroforestry schemes undertaken in areas where it is currently exploited.  相似文献
