The status of Acleotrema Johnston & Tiegs, 1922 and Heteroplectanum Rakotofiringa, Oliver & Lambert, 1987 (Monogenoidea: Diplectanidae), with the redescription of Acleotrema girellae Johnston & Tiegs, 1922

Acleotrema Johnston & Tiegs, 1922 is resurrected and its diagnosis amended. A. girellae Johnston & Tiegs, 1922 is redescribed based on the lectotype from the Australian Museum (Sydney, Australia). A. kyphosi Yamaguti, 1968 is considered a junior synonym of A. girellae. Heteroplectanum Rakotofiringa, Oliver & Lambert, 1987 is considered a junior synonym of Acleotrema. The nine species of the latter genus are transferred to Acleotrema as: A. diplobulbus (Yamaguti, 1968) n. comb., A. nenue (Yamaguti, 1968) n. comb., A. spiculare (Yamaguti, 1968) n. comb., A. yamagutii (Oliver, 1983) n. comb., A. nenuoides (Rakotofiringa, Oliver & Lambert, 1987) n. comb., A. parastromatei (Rakotofiringa, Oliver & Lambert, 1987) n. comb., A. serrulopenis (Rakotofiringa, Oliver & Lambert, 1987) n. comb., A. tamatavense (Rakotofiringa, Oliver & Lambert, 1987) n. comb. and A. oliveri (León-Règagnon, Pérez-Ponce de León & Garcia- Prieto, 1997) n. comb. An historical account of the species of Acleotrema is presented.

Genetic mapping of a highly variable norovirus GII.4 blockade epitope: potential role in escape from human herd immunity

Noroviruses account for 96% of viral gastroenteritis cases worldwide, with GII.4 strains responsible >80% of norovirus outbreaks. Histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) are norovirus binding ligands, and antigenic and preferential HBGA binding profiles vary over time as new GII.4 strains emerge. The capsid P2 subdomain facilitates HBGA binding, contains neutralizing antibody epitopes, and likely evolves in response to herd immunity. To identify amino acids regulating HBGA binding and antigenic differences over time, we created chimeric virus-like particles (VLPs) between the GII.4-1987 and GII.4-2006 strains by exchanging amino acids in putative epitopes and characterized their antigenic and HBGA binding profiles using anti-GII.4-1987 and -2006 mouse monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and polyclonal sera, 1988 outbreak human sera, and synthetic HBGAs. The exchange of amino acids 393 to 395 between GII.4-1987 and GII.4-2006 resulted in altered synthetic HBGA binding compared to parental strains. Introduction of GII.4-1987 residues 294, 297 to 298, 368, and 372 (epitope A) into GII.4-2006 resulted in reactivity with three anti-GII.4-1987 MAbs and reduced reactivity with four anti-GII.4-2006 MAbs. The three anti-GII.4-1987 MAbs also blocked chimeric VLP-HBGA interaction, while an anti-GII.4-2006 blocking antibody did not, indicating that epitope A amino acids comprise a potential neutralizing epitope for GII.4-1987 and GII.4-2006. We also tested GII.4-1987-immunized mouse polyclonal sera and 1988 outbreak human sera for the ability to block chimeric VLP-HBGA interaction and found that epitope A amino acids contribute significantly to the GII.4-1987 blockade response. Our data provide insights that help explain the emergence of new GII.4 epidemic strains over time, may aid development of norovirus therapeutics, and may help predict the emergence of future epidemic strains.

Analysis of Square Contingency Tables with Ordered Categories by a New Method of Applying the 1-Weight Modified Marginal Homogeneity Models

For square contingency tables with ordered categories, this note proposes a new method of applying Tomizawa's (1987) 1-weight modified marginal homogeneity models and applies to the 4×4 tables on unaided vision analysed by Tomizawa (1987) and by Stuart (1955). A possible explanation which is derived from fitting those models is first obtained using this new method.

Biotelemetry monitoring of translocated Crocodylus niloticus in Lake Ngezi, Zimbabwe

Radiotelemetry was used from June 1986 through February 1987 to observe the movements of four Nile crocodiles, Crocodylus niloticus Laurenti, introduced into a resident population at Lake Ngezi, Zimbabwe. The use of surgically-implanted transmitters was the first application of this technique on wild Nile crocodiles. A subadult female (194 cm TL, 35 kg) and two males (256 cm, 81 kg; 348 cm, 260 kg) wandered throughout the area. A large female (297 cm, 149 kg) moved > 12 km from her point of release to Ngezi River and nested; she guarded the nest site through 21 January 1987 when she moved the hatchlings to a nearby creche. A juvenile crocodile (120 cm TL, 8 kg) captured in Lake Ngezi was also monitored from June 1986 to February 1987. It traversed some 15 km of the shoreline of Lake Ngezi and moved as much as 10 km overnight. Evidence is presented that the translocated crocodiles, excluding the nesting female, exhibited exploratory behaviour throughout the nine-month observation period, and did not establish home ranges per se.     

Feeding habits of raccoon (Procyon lotor) (Carnivora: Procyonidae) in a coastal,tropical wet forest of Costa Rica

Raccoon (Procyon lotor) food habits were studied at Manuel Antonio National Park, a tropical rain forest in the Pacific coast of Costa Rica from May to December 1987, from September to December 1989 and from January to April 1990. A 134 feces sample size was used to assess the most important items in raccoon diet: two crab species (Gecarcinus quadratus and Cardisoma crassum) with a relative frequency of 0.94 in the rainy season of 1987, 0.76 in the rainy season of 1989 and 0.65 in the dry season of 1990. Fruits were the second category in importance, with relative frequencies of 0.09 for 1987, 0.32 for 1989 and 0.44 for 1990.
