We have recently developed a new and powerful method capable of detecting, by purely physical means, surface differences between closely related red (or other) cell populations. The procedure consists of isotopically labeling (with [51Cr]chromate) aliquots of red blood cell populations. Such labeled cells are mixed with an excess of unlabeled red cells to which they are to be compared. The mixtures are subjected to countercurrent distribution in either a charge-sensitive or a non-charge-sensitive dextran-poly(ethylene glycol) aqueous phase system. The distribution curves are analyzed for total cells (in terms of hemoglobin absorbance) and labeled cells (in terms of cpm). Changes in the relative specific activities through the distribution curves are indicative of subtle differences in surface properties between such cell populations. Using this method we have found that erythrocytes from arbitrarily chosen (presumably hematologically normal) individuals differ. In the current work we have examined the surface properties of erythrocytes from Sprague-Dawley and from Lewis rats. This was done with a view to determining whether (a) differences of the type found between different humans can also be detected in other species and (b), if such differences do exist, to examine, by study of the highly inbred Lewis rat strain, whether the differences appear to have a genetic or an acquired basis. It was found that the surface properties of erythrocytes from Lewis and Sprague-Dawley rats differ as do erythrocytes among rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain. No difference was found between red blood cells from different rats of the inbred Lewis strain. These results indicate that the surface differences between red blood cells from different rats detected by partitioning have a genetic rather than acquired origin.  相似文献

Previous studies have recognized two patterns of distal femoral morphology among the specimens from Hadar (Ethiopia) assigned to Australopithecus afarensis. Size and shape differences between the well-preserved large (AL 333-4) and small (AL 129-1a) distal femora have been used to invoke both taxonomic and functional differences within the A. afarensis hypodigm. Nevertheless, prior studies have not analyzed these specimens in a multivariate context, nor have they compared the pattern of shape differences between the fossils to patterns of sexual dimorphism among extant taxa (i.e., the manner in which males and females differ). This study reexamines morphometric differences between the above specimens in light of observed levels of variation and patterns of sexual dimorphism among extant hominoids. Eight extant reference populations were sampled to provide a standard by which to consider size and shape differences between the fossils. Samples include three populations of modern humans, two subspecies of Pan troglodytes, three subspecies of Gorilla gorilla, Pan paniscus, and Pongo pygmaeus. Using size ratios and scale-free "shape" data (both derived from 2-D coordinate landmarks), size and shape differences between the fossils were evaluated against variation within each reference population using an exact randomization procedure. Growth Difference Matrix Analysis (GDMA) was used to test whether the pattern of morphological differences between the fossils differs significantly from patterns of sexual dimorphism observed among the ten extant groups. Overall morphometric affinities of the fossils to extant taxa were explored using canonical variates analysis (CVA).Results of the randomization tests indicate that the size difference between the Hadar femora can be easily accommodated within most hominoid taxa at the subspecific level (though not within single-sex samples). In addition, the magnitude of shape differences between the fossils can be commonly sampled even within most single-sex samples of a single hominoid subspecies. The pattern of morphological differences between the fossils does not differ statistically from any average pattern of femoral shape dimorphism observed among living hominoids. Moreover, contrary to prior claims, and despite a size disparity between the fossils greater than is typically observed within some chimpanzee and human populations, the two Hadar fossils appear to be much more similar to one another in overall shape than either specimen is to any extant hominoid group.  相似文献

Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile genetic elements that can have many deleterious effects on the fitness of their host. The germline-specific PIWI pathway guards the genome against TEs, deriving its specificity from sequence complementarity between PIWI-bound small RNAs (piRNAs) and the TEs. The piRNAs are derived from so-called piRNA clusters. Recent studies have demonstrated that the piRNA repertoire can be adjusted to accommodate recent TE invasions by capturing invading TEs in piRNA loci. Thus far, no information concerning piRNA divergence is available from vertebrates. We present piRNA analyses of two relatively divergent zebrafish strains. We find that significant differences in the piRNA populations have accumulated, most notably among active class I TEs. This divergence can be split into differences in piRNA abundance per element and differences in sense/antisense polarity ratios. In crosses between animals of the different strains, many of these differences are resolved in the progeny. However, some differences remain, often leaning to the maternally contributed piRNA population. These differences can be detected at least two generations later. Our data illustrate, for the first time, the fluidity of piRNA populations in vertebrates and how the established diversity is transmitted to future generations.  相似文献

The kinetic parameters Km, k+2 and k+2/Km of the pancreatic ribonucleases (EC 3.1.4.22) from cow, giraffe, horse, rat and lesser rorqual have been determined, using 2',3'-cyclic cytidine monophosphate and 2',3'-cuclic uridine monophosphate as substrates. No large differences were found between the activities of the five enzymes. The relative differences between the activities of the five enzymes are mainly due to differences in the rates of hydrolysis and not to differences in the affinities for the substrates.  相似文献

The late Neandertal sample from Vindija (Croatia) has been described as transitional between the earlier Central European Neandertals from Krapina (Croatia) and modern humans. However, the morphological differences indicating this transition may rather be the result of different sex and/or age compositions between the samples. This study tests the hypothesis that the metric differences between the Krapina and Vindija mandibular samples are due to sample bias. Mandibles are the focus of this paper because past studies have posited this region as particularly indicative of the Vindija sample's transitional nature. The results indicate that the metric differences between the Krapina and Vindija mandibular samples are not due to sample bias. This conclusion is consistent with an earlier analysis of sample bias for the Vindija supraorbital sample.  相似文献

The most consistent cognitive sex differences have been found in the visuo-spatial domain, using Mental Rotation (MR) tasks. Such sex differences have been suggested to bear implications on our understanding of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, it is still debated how the sex difference in MR performance relates to differences between individuals with ASD compared to typically developed control persons (TD). To provide a detailed exploration of sex differences in MR performance, we studied rotational (indicated by slopes) and non-rotational aspects (indicated by intercepts) of the MR task in TD individuals (total N = 50). Second-to-fourth digit length ratios (2D:4D) were measured to investigate the associations between prenatal testosterone and performance on MR tasks. Handedness was assessed by the use of the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory in order to examine the relation between handedness and MR performance. In addition, we investigated the relation of spatial to systemising abilities, both of which have been associated with sex differences and with ASD, employing the Intuitive Physics Test (IPT). Results showed a male advantage in rotational aspects of the MR task, which correlated with IPT results. These findings are in contrast to the MR performance of individuals with ASD who have been shown to outperform TD persons in the non-rotational aspects of the MR task. These results suggest that the differences in MR performance due to ASD are different from sex-related differences in TD persons, in other words, ASD is not a simple and continuous extension of the male cognitive profile into the psychopathological range as the extreme male brain hypothesis (EMB) of ASD would suggest.  相似文献

Relative brain size (measured as gross brain size after body size effects are removed) differs systematically between families of rodents, insectivores and lagomorphs. The Sciuridae have the largest relative brain size, the Soricidae and Bathyergidae the smallest.
These results are discussed and compared with previous analyses of relative brain sizes among primates and bats. These differences complicate comparisons between relative brain size across phylogenetically diverse species and attempts to relate differences in relative brain size to ecological variables. To overcome these problems, best fit relationships were estimated for each family , and values for each genus were expressed as deviations from the lines of best fit. We refer to these values as Comparative Brain Size (CBS).
Differences in CBS are related to differences in habitat type (forest-dwelling genera have larger CBS' than grassland forms), in diet (folivores have smaller CBS' than generalists or insectivores, frugivores and granivores), in zonation (arboreal genera have larger CBS' than terrestrial ones) and in activity timing (nocturnal genera have larger CBS' than dirurnal ones). However, these ecological categories are interrelated and, when the effects of other ecological differences are taken into account using analyses of variance, only the differences associated with diet, and possibly habitat remain.  相似文献

To account for the differences between proters and opisthes with regard to extra cytoproct morphogenesis in Paramecium tetraurelia, two hypotheses have been proposed and tested. (i) The differences may be a result of different actions of proter-macronucleus and opisthe-macronucleus. This hypothesis has been tested by cytoplasmically connecting the proter with the opisthe in the form of chains, some of which have only one macronucleus per chain. However, the connected proters and opisthes remain different in extra cytoproct morphogenesis, thus arguing against the hypothesis. (ii) The differences may be a result of differences between the proter and the opisthe with regard to the development of their posterior-ventral cortex: proters have a newly-developed posterior-ventral cortex whereas opisthes receive the posterior-ventral cortex from the pre-fission mother animal. This hypothesis has been tested by surgically producing an opisthe with a newly-regenerated posterior cortex. Such opisthes, however, remain different from proters in extra cytoproct morphogenesis. Thus no direct support for the second hypothesis is obtained. Also, proter-opisthe difference in morphogenesis may be understood in terms of Wolpert's positional information hypothesis, by assuming that the anterior and posterior ends of a dividing animal serve as reference points for establishing a gradient and that positional information before separation of the two daughter animals leads to differences in extra cytoproct morphogenesis between them after separation.  相似文献

The K-562 cell line is a culture of human leukemia stem cells originally derived from a patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia in blast crisis. We have applied a sensitive method capable of detecting subtle differences in charge-associated and noncharge-related cell surface properties between closely related cell populations to K-562 cells from different sources and having different histories. The method consists of isotopically labeling aliquots of each of two cell populations to be compared with 51Cr-chromate and mixing the labeled cells with an excess of unlabeled cells with which they are to be compared. The mixtures are subjected to countercurrent distribution in either a charge-sensitive or a noncharge-sensitive dextran-poly(ethylene glycol) aqueous two-phase system. The distribution curves are analyzed for total cells (in terms of electronic counts) and labeled cells (in terms of cpm). Alterations in relative specific activities through the distribution curves are indicative of differences in surface properties between such cell populations. Using this method we have found surface differences, both charge-associated and noncharge-related, between any two K-562 cell sublines examined. Interestingly, whereas we observed differences among K-562 sublines, we never witnessed a change in surface properties of the respective sublines. The differences among the sublines examined remained unaltered for more than 40 passages in our hands. It thus appears likely that the event(s) leading to an altered K-562 cell surface, detectable by partitioning, does not occur gradually.  相似文献

Although template-active RNA in dry seeds and embryos has attracted widespread interest, there have been no published reports about 5'-terminal "capping" sequences in such RNA. Boro[3H]hydride labeling of periodate-oxidized termini and high performance liquid chromatography of cap oligonucleotides have been used to compare terminal sequences in poly(A)-rich RNA from dry and germinating embryos. As is the case in germinating embryos, poly(A)-rich RNA from dry embryos contains only "type 0" cap sequences, i.e., m7G(5')ppp(5')N, in which m7G is the 7-methylguanosine cap and N is any of the classical ribonucleosides: adenosine (A), guanosine (G), cytidine (C),a nd uridine (U). Striking differences between the cell-free translational capacities of bulk messenger RNA (mRNA) populations from dry and germinating embryos are not reflected in signal differences in their proportions of "type 0" cap structures: in general, there is approximately 40% m7G(5')ppp(5')A, with roughly equivalent amounts of m7G(5')ppp(5')G and m7G(5')ppp(5')C accounting for most of the remaining sequences. The findings with mRNA from dry plant embryos serve to emphasize interesting differences between patterns of methylation in the capped and uncapped RNA molecules in higher plants and animals; the differences have not been previously noted in the literature and are the subject of brief comment in this paper.  相似文献

Previous studies have reported a number of physiological differences among juvenile alligators from two well-studied populations (Lake Apopka and Lake Woodruff) in north central Florida. These studies obtained alligators of similar size from each lake under the assumption that the animals were of similar age. Lake Apopka is a hypertrophic lake with a 50-year history of contamination from agricultural and municipal operations, whereas Lake Woodruff is a eutrophic lake and part of a National Wildlife Refuge that receives little point source pollution. If growth rates differ among these areas, it could be argued that differences in endocrine parameters reported previously (e.g. steroid or thyroid hormone concentrations) could be the result of differences in the animals' ages. Using growth annuli in cross-sections of femurs, we estimated the ages of juvenile alligators and compared the relationship of estradiol-17beta (E(2)) and testosterone (T) to size and age within each lake and sex. No differences were detected in the relationship between size and age between the two areas indicating similar growth rates between lakes. Plasma E(2) was positively related to size in females from Lake Apopka, and age in Woodruff females. Males from Lake Apopka had elevated plasma E(2) compared with Lake Woodruff males and did not differ from Woodruff females. No significant relationships were detected for T from either lake, and no differences in plasma T were detected among lakes or sexes. Our data indicate that both size and age can have a significant relationship with steroid concentrations. However, the relationship between steroid concentrations and size or age differed between lakes. We suggest both factors should be considered when conducting physiological studies where there is evidence to suggest growth rates may differ among populations.  相似文献

Moss polsters, pollen traps and lake surface sediment samples are commonly used as climate calibration data or as modern analogues for reconstructing vegetation from fossil profiles, but the differences in pollen content between these media have received little attention. This study aims to analyse how the three media differ in reflecting individual vegetation types and spatial differences in vegetation. 119 modern samples (64 moss polsters, 37 lake surface sediment samples and 18 pollen traps from which a collection was made annually) were taken from northern Fennoscandia and the Kola Peninsula as a broad transect crossing the northernmost forest limits of Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii (mountain birch), Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) and Picea abies (Norway spruce). The pollen assemblages from these samples were compared with the surrounding vegetation visually and via PCA (principle components analysis) and cluster analysis. Both comparisons allow a correct distinction between pollen assemblages of arctic/alpine heath, mountain birch dominated areas, and boreal coniferous forests. The differences between the vegetation zones are stronger than the differences between the sampling media. Nevertheless, lake sediment samples from the mountain birch woodland zone tend to overestimate pine and underestimate birch. Pollen traps are biased towards lower tree pollen percentages and higher values of shrubs, herbs and Cyperaceae. This bias is especially strong in traps that have missing years in the data. Irrespective of the vegetation zone, pollen traps tend to have lower Pinus pollen percentages than in the adjacent moss polsters.  相似文献

The Atlantic blue marlin Makaira nigricans larvae were collected from Exuma Sound, Bahamas and the Straits of Florida over three summers (2000–2002). Sagittal otoliths were extracted and read under light microscopy to determine relationships between standard length ( L S) and age for larvae from each year and location. Otolith growth trajectories were significantly different between locations: after the first 5–6 days of life, larvae from Exuma Sound grew significantly faster than larvae from the Straits of Florida. Exponential regression coefficients were similar among years for Exuma Sound larvae (mean instantaneous growth rate, G L = 0·125), but differed between years for larvae from the Straits of Florida ( G L = 0·086–0·089). Differences in larval growth rates between locations resulted in a 4–6 mm difference in L S by day 15 of larval life. These differences in growth appeared to be unrelated to mean ambient water temperatures, and may have been caused by location‐specific differences in prey composition or availability. Alternatively, population‐specific differences in maternal condition may have contributed to these differences in early larval growth.  相似文献

? Recent studies have demonstrated sibling vs stranger differences in group root allocation in plants, suggesting that plants have the potential for kin discrimination in competition. However, morphology differences could potentially be generated by competition-based mechanisms. Here, we tested these hypotheses for the sibling vs stranger differences in root allocation in Cakile edentula. ? Seeds were planted in pairs of either kin (siblings) or strangers, from all combinations of eight families, to give eight kin (sibling) and 28 stranger pair identities. Because the species has a seed dimorphism, the 10 replicates of each pair identity included both seed types. Root allocation, size inequality between seedlings in a pair, and competitive ability were derived from measures of biomass and height. ? Cakile edentula seedlings demonstrated the same kin recognition response previously observed in juvenile plants, with lower root allocation in kin pairs than stranger pairs. The seed dimorphism was not associated with root allocation. ? The two competitive mechanisms, genetic differences in competitive ability and increased size inequality in stranger groups, did not explain the root allocation differences in these seedlings. Kin recognition offered the most probable explanation for the differences in root allocation between sibling and stranger pairs.  相似文献

Abstract

The biomedical literature for the period 1978–84 was surveyed for nine categories of alcohol response (consumption rate, absorption rate from the digestive tract, metabolism rate, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) variants, acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) variants, “alcohol sensitivity,” cardiovascular changes, psychological changes, alcohol abuse), looking for data on possible ethnic differences. These data were supplemented by selected earlier studies. Excepting psychological changes (on which there were very few studies), evidence for ethnic (or racial) differences was found in each category of response. The most striking differences were between Orientals and non‐Orientals; about half of all Orientals lack a high‐activity form of ALDH which all non‐Orientals have. As a direct consequence, these “deficient” Orientals have markedly increased alcohol sensitivity (flushing, dysphoria, cardiovascular response). These enzyme differences are very probably due to a single gene, as are ethnic differences in ADH variants. For rates of absorption and metabolism, the ethnic differences probably have a polygenic basis.  相似文献

利用线粒体DNA的D-Loop区序列, 对来自长江水系(邗江、吴江、九江、石首、木洞和万州)、珠江水系(肇庆)和黑龙江水系(嫩江)的8个草鱼野生群体开展了遗传变异分析。在424尾鱼中检测到34个变异位点, 34个单倍型, 单倍型多样性介于0.4740.708。群体间Kimura双参数遗传距离介于0.00200.0049。长江下游3个群体间遗传距离最近, 遗传分化不显著(P0.05); 肇庆群体与长江上游3个群体遗传距离较近, 与九江群体遗传分化不显著(P0.05); 嫩江群体与长江上游2个群体遗传距离较近, 与万州群体遗传分化不显著(P0.05)。遗传距离与地理距离存在极显著正相关(R=0.61, P0.01)。分子方差分析显示, 不同流域间遗传变异占总变异26.24%, 差异极显著(P0.01)。34个单倍型分为2个分支, 分化极显著(FST=0.644, P0.01), 推测分化时间为第四纪更新世纪晚期。    相似文献

Morphological and discrete genetic differences are found between geographically isolated, allopatric, tick populations. However, we have found differences in sympatric tick populations. Notable differences were found in the body size and weight of Dermacentor andersoni collected from a single location in Montana, USA. These ticks were separated in groups consisting of big (B) and small (S) individuals. The objectives of this study were: (a) to characterize genetic diversity in B and S D. andersoni individuals, (b) to evaluate transmissibility of the character associated with body size and weight, and (c) to correlate morphological differences with biological, physiological, and behavioral characteristics. We found extensive genetic variation in 16S rDNA and ITS2 loci in B and S ticks and demonstrated genetic differentiation between B and S individuals. We further provide some support for Mendelian autosomal dominant transmission of characters associated with tick body size and weight. The results reported herein show that B ticks have a better reproductive success than S ticks and suggest partial reproductive isolation of S ticks.  相似文献

Bats, like other mammals, are known to use interaural intensity differences (IID) to determine azimuthal position. In the lateral superior olive (LSO) neurons have firing behaviors which vary systematically with IID. Those neurons receive excitatory inputs from the ipsilateral ear and inhibitory inputs from the contralateral one. The IID sensitivity of a LSO neuron is thought to be due to delay differences between the signals coming from both ears, differences due to different synaptic delays and to intensity-dependent delays. In this paper we model the auditory pathway until the LSO. We propose a learning scheme where inputs to LSO neurons start out numerous with different relative delays. Spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) is then used to prune those connections. We compare the pruned neuron responses with physiological data and analyse the relationship between IID’s of teacher stimuli and IID sensitivities of trained LSO neurons.  相似文献
