Little is known of the reproductive biology of the yellow-bellied sea snake (Pelamis platurus), a species widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific and eastern Pacific Oceans. We observed mating, birth, and free-ranging neonates of P. platurus while collecting this snake once a month over 19 months in the Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama. A pair of copulating snakes was netted on the water surface during February. Neonates, which were identified by size, were observed from September to December. Captive females gave birth during September. Neonates born in captivity emerged head- or tailfirst, shed the remnants of the fetal membranes by coiling their body in a circular loop, and then surfaced to breathe. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Reproduction of the dominant Antarctic copepod Calanus propinquus was studied in February–April, 1989 aboard the R.V Dmitry Mendeleev during cruise N° 43 to the Weddell Sea. Single females were kept at 0 °C in the laboratory for 56 days with abundant food concentration (above 300 µg C l–1 of Platymonas viridis). Females released clutches at night at 2–3 day intervals. Most clutches contained from 10 to 40 eggs, mean 37.3 eggs female–1. Average carbon content of an egg was 0.37 ± 0.05 µg C. The maximum daily egg production rate of 30–50 eggs female–1 d–1 was observed for the first 3 days of the laboratory incubation, corresponding to 3.7–6.2% body C. The state of gonadal development of females showed the decline of the reproductive season in late February. The data suggest that egg laying in the region under study starts in December and lasts until March. The state of ovarian maturation, changes in vertical distribution and biochemical body composition of females suggest the possibility of two-year life cycle in C. propinquus in the southern Weddell Sea.  相似文献

The seasonal occurrence of picocyanobacteria in the Greenland Sea and Arctic Ocean was investigated during four expeditions in May–June 1987 and 1988, August–October 1991, and November–December 1988 by epifluorescence microscopy. In early summer, the abundance of picocyanobacteria was related to water masses: they were nearly absent in polar water, whereas they occurred in high concentrations (up to 5470 cells ml–1) in Atlantic Water. During autumn and beginning of winter, the abundances of picocyanobacteria remained around 103 cells ml–1. Their relative contribution to total picoplanktonic algal abundance increased from 0% during spring/summer to 70–80% in late autumn, as a result of a decrease in the abundance of eucaryotic picoalgae. Consequently, the impact of picocyanobacteria on Arctic epipelagic carbon and energy flow is of minor importance, and the strong contribution of picoplankton algae to biomass and primary productivity in Arctic seas has to be attributed to eucaryotic species.  相似文献

Digestive enzymes of copepodite V (CV) Calanus finmarchicusand C.hyperboreus from two different depths were compared duringMIZEX 1984 (June/July) at stations in the ice and open water.CV of both species from 500–200 m showed reduced enzymeactivity, indicating that they were in a resting stage. In moultingexperiments at the end of June using CV from 100–0 m moultingwas delayed and began only after 3 weeks in C.finmarchicus andafter 3 months in C.hyperboreus. These results suggest thatthe deep CV populations are the seed of the new overwinteringstock. In surface CV C.finmarchicus and C. hyperboreus enzymeactivities were generally much higher than in deep CV. In neitherspecies were enzyme activities correlated with chlorophyll concentrations.Activities in C.finmarchicus reflected overall phytoplanktondistribution and were highest in the marginal ice zone, whereasthey decreased under the ice except for polynya stations onthe East Greenland Shelf. In surface C.hyperboreus digestiveenzymes were not correlated with those of C.finmarchicus, pointingto different diets or regulatory mechanisms. Enzyme activitywas lowest in the marginal ice zone and increased under theice. High activities were found at polynya stations and otherclose pack ice. The utilization of ice algae by C.hyperboreuscould explain these discrepancies in digestive enzyme activitiesof both species.  相似文献

Species of Calvatia (Lycoperdaceae) from arctic and subarctic regions are described. The diagnostic characters in Calvatia are discused with emphasis on strutures of peridium and capillitium and colour of gleba. Ten species are recognized. Three species: C. Candida, C. excipuliformis, C. utriformis are confined to subarctic stations, while seven species have their main distribution in the arctic zones. Three of these are new species: C. connivens, C. horrida, C. septentrionalis , while three other species are redefined after studies of type material: C. arctica, C. bellii and C. turneri. Several specimens studied show characters pointing to a hybrid origin.  相似文献

Abundance and reproductive biology (gonad maturation and egg production) of the Arctic copepod Calanus glacialis were studied in the Laptev Sea and adjacent Arctic Ocean in September 1993 and from July to September 1995. Both abundance and reproductive activity were subject to strong spatial and seasonal variability, which was related to the ice cover, feeding conditions and circulation pattern. Maximum abundance of the C. glacialis population was generally confined to the outer shelf and slope with depths between 50 and 1000 m. During both cruises, highest egg production rates and largest number of young copepodite stages were observed in the eastern Laptev Sea, where the development of the C. glacialis population seems to follow the opening of the “Siberian Polynya”. In the western part, which is usually covered by pack ice, females were all immature, and no young stages were found. However, females responded quickly to a temporary opening of the ice there in 1995 and spawned. Starvation experiments showed that food-independent reproduction fuelled by internal energy resources was at least partly responsible for relatively high egg production rates at low ambient food concentrations. Egg production rates in starved females were considerably higher than those previously reported. Accepted: 14 June 2000  相似文献

Summary The hyperiid amphipod, Themisto libellula, is abundant in Arctic seas and is an important prey for fish, birds and mammals. Characterization of its life cycle has been hampered by the lack of winter collections. In this study, that portion of the hyperiid population inhabiting the upper 30 m of the water column in Frobisher Bay was sampled periodically in winter, spring and summer during five consecutive years. In one year the winter and spring collections included large numbers of ovigerous females. These samples provide new information about timing of reproduction, size at maturity, fecundity, embryonic development, hatching, release and rate of growth of T. libellula in the Arctic. The average length of the ovigerous females was 23.3 mm. This and the summer growth rate of about 6 mm/month indicates that they can reproduce when one year old. Eggs are laid prior to early February, and although some young may be released from the marsupium as early as mid-March, most are liberated during April and May. The fecundity is significantly correlated with female length and an average 23 mm long individual had 275 embryos. The size-specific fecundity is similar to that of hyperiids from temperate and subtropical waters.  相似文献

New ice formation, protist incorporation and enrichment in differentstages of young Arctic sea ice (grease, nilas and pancake ice)were studied in the Greenland Sea in autumn 1995. Nutrients(nitrite, nitrate, phosphateand silicate), salinity and abundanceestimates of organisms were analysed from surface water andnew ice samples. The abundances of bacteria, diatoms, and photo-and hetero trophic flagellates in the ice and water column weredetermined using epifluorescence microscopy. An enrichment indexwas calculated to compare the abundance of organisms in thewater column with different stages of young sea ice. The resultsclearly show that (i) protist incorporation already begins duringthe first stages of new sea ice formation, (ii) incorporationof protists is selective, showing preference for diatoms witha relatively large cell size and (iii) enrichment of organisms,in particular diatoms, takes place in young sea ice in the GreenlandSea. The selectivity of the incorpor ation process and the evidentpreference for diatoms are presumably a result of the largercell size and/orcertain properties of the cell surface (e.g.stickiness) that enhance their incorporation. The calculatedenrichment indices were relatively low for bacteria and flagellates.  相似文献

Knowledge of the occurrence, distribution and diversity of pathogens of insects and arachnids (entomopathogens) in the Arctic is very limited. Climate change is expected to affect Arctic terrestrial arthropod communities and therefore also host–pathogen interactions, given that entomopathogens are present. We conducted a survey of fungal entomopathogens in soil samples collected at four localities in Greenland; two at low Arctic sites (Ritenbenk and Disko Island) and two at sites in the high Arctic (Zackenberg and Danmarkshavn). Fungi were isolated from soil samples using larvae of the insect species Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) and Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera) as baits providing evidence that the fungal isolates were indeed entomopathogenic. Five fungal species (Ascomycota; Hypocreales) were found: Isaria fumosorosea Wize, Isaria farinosa (Holmsk.) Fr., Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., Beauveria pseudobassiana Rehner and Humber and Tolypocladium inflatum W. Gams (syn.?=?T. niveum). I. farinosa was found at all four localities, while I. fumosorosea was detected in single samples at each of three localities including both high Arctic sites. Only the locality on Disko Island revealed B. bassiana, whereas B. pseudobassiana was isolated at the three other sites. T. inflatum was only found on Disko Island and only isolated with T. molitor as a bait insect. The results document that fungal entomopathogens are widely distributed in the soil environment in Greenland. Entomopathogens should therefore be included in future studies of arthropod ecology in the Arctic.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Despite being widespread and easily observed, little is known about the life history of Glaucous Gulls ( Larus hyperboreus ). From 1984 to 2007, we examined their breeding biology and demography at Coats Island, Nunavut, Canada, where they nest alongside a colony of 30,000 pairs of Thick-billed Murres ( Uria lomvia ). The gulls fed mainly on murre eggs and chicks and by scavenging adult carcasses. The median age at first breeding was 5 yr, and the mean age was 4.8 ± 0.9 yr. Adult survival was estimated as 0.84 ± 0.03 (SE). The mean clutch size was 2.56 eggs and the mean number of young reared per year was 1.6 (range = 0.9–2.2). Birds reared at the colony provided 40% of recruits. Assuming that survival of locally reared chicks that emigrated was similar to that of chicks that returned to the colony, about 22% of the young gulls survived to breeding age. The timing of breeding by Glaucous Gulls appeared related to the timing of laying by murres. Although the demographic characteristics of Glaucous Gulls in our study were similar to those of populations of other large gulls, adult survival was at the lower end of the range for populations of large Larus gulls. There is some evidence that Glaucous Gulls exhibit lower survival than large gulls breeding in temperate areas, possibly because of contaminant burdens. In general, however, the demographic characteristics of large gulls show little variation and are probably a product of their common phylogeny.  相似文献

State of maturity, egg numbers, as well as gonadosomatic index (GSI), and relative fecundity were determined in 209 females of the cottid species Artediellus atlanticus. Specimens were caught by Agassiz and bottom trawls during two expeditions of RV “Polarstern” to the shelf off northeast Greenland (ARK VII/2; July/ August 1990) as well as to the Barents Sea and the shelf areas surrounding Svalbard (ARK VIII/2 – Arctic EPOS; June/July 1991). Analysis of the state of maturity showed that A. atlanticus spawns from late summer to autumn. Individuals from northern populations spawn later (November) than those from more southern locations (July to September). The total number of eggs (40–216) was small due to their large diameter and the small size of the fish. The mean GSI of females from the central Barents Sea (36.9±6.5%; n=24) was significantly higher (P<0.001) than the GSI of females caught off eastern Svalbard (18.7±4.0%; n=14), compared at stage IV of maturity. The mean relative fecundity was significantly higher (P<0.001) for females of the central Barents Sea (17.9±2.3; n=19) than for females caught on more northern stations east of Svalbard (6.9±1.8; n=17) and north of Svalbard (6.4±0.5; n=7). Individuals of A. atlanticus that were maintained at 0°C spawned in the aquaria, allowing observation of the development of their eggs and larvae for 1 year. The eggs needed more than 200 days to develop. The larvae hatched at a very advanced stage and were similar to the adults in appearance and behaviour. The larvae grew at a rate of 0.02 mm per day and showed a benthic mode of life. Received: 7 April 1995/Accepted: 30 July 1995  相似文献

Twenty-one metazoan parasite species were found in Arctic charr at three coastal sites in west Greenland, including Neascus sp. and the nematode Pseudoterranova decipiens , new records for Arctic charr. Twelve species are new records for Arctic charr in Greenland. The quantitative composition of the parasite communities varied, but the freshwater species ( Diphyllobothrium ditremwn, Eubothriutn salvelini, Proteocephalus longicollis, Crepidostotnutn farianis ) were usually numerically dominant, even in anadromous fish. The absence from Greenland of Mysidacea, Amphipoda, Ephemeroptera and Odonata excludes parasites requiring such organisms as intermediate hosts, including the cestode Cyathocephalus truncatus , nematodes of the genus Cystidicola , and freshwater acanthocephalans.  相似文献

The growth, survivorship and reproduction of Arctic region Daphniamiddendorffiana was investigated in several lakes and pondson the tundra in northern Alaska and additionally in a laboratorystudy. Growth rate equations, reproduction rates and survivorshipunder natural conditions were determined. The natural environmentsdiffered in the available resources; investigations were madein undisturbed oligotrophic lakes, lakes undergoing nutrientmanipulations, lakes recovering from nutrient manipulation, and a small human-created pond. The lakes also differed in thepresence or absence of fish. The results indicated that resourceavailability affected the growth, survivorship and reproductionof D. middendorffiana. The lake with the highest resources producedthe greatest reproduction and growth. The environments withthe lowest resources had the least reproduction. Secondly, resourcelevel was observed to influence life history choices. Underlow resource conditions D. middendorffiana produced ephippiaat first reproduction rather than neonates. Third, the resultsalso indicated that refuge from predation significantly affectsthe distribution of D. middendorffiana. Lakes that contain fishdo not support significant populations of D. middendorffiana, although the growth and survivorship studies indicate they coulddo well in those environments.  相似文献

Shrubs have expanded in Arctic ecosystems over the past century, resulting in significant changes to albedo, ecosystem function, and plant community composition. Willow and rock ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus, L. muta) and moose (Alces alces) extensively browse Arctic shrubs, and may influence their architecture, growth, and reproduction. Furthermore, these herbivores may alter forage plants in such a way as to increase the quantity and accessibility of their own food source. We estimated the effect of winter browsing by ptarmigan and moose on an abundant, early-successional willow (Salix alaxensis) in northern Alaska by comparing browsed to unbrowsed branches. Ptarmigan browsed 82–89% of willows and removed 30–39% of buds, depending on study area and year. Moose browsed 17–44% of willows and browsed 39–55% of shoots. Browsing inhibited apical dominance and activated axillary and adventitious buds to produce new vegetative shoots. Ptarmigan- and moose-browsed willow branches produced twice the volume of shoot growth but significantly fewer catkins the following summer compared with unbrowsed willow branches. Shoots on browsed willows were larger and produced 40–60% more buds compared to unbrowsed shoots. This process of shoot production at basal parts of the branch is the mechanism by which willows develop a highly complex “broomed” architecture after several years of browsing. Broomed willows were shorter and more likely to be re-browsed by ptarmigan, but not moose. Ptarmigan likely benefit from the greater quantity and accessibility of buds on previously browsed willows and may increase the carrying capacity of their own habitat. Despite the observed tolerance of willows to browsing, their vertical growth and reproduction were strongly inhibited by moose and ptarmigan. Browsing by these herbivores therefore needs to be considered in future models of shrub expansion in the Arctic.  相似文献

Sea ice loss will indirectly alter energy transfer through the pelagic food web and ultimately impact apex predators. We quantified spring-time trends in sea ice recession around each of 46 thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia) colonies in west Greenland across 20 degrees of latitude and investigated the magnitude and timing of the associated spring-time primary production. A geographical information system was used to extract satellite-based observations of sea ice concentration from the Nimbus-7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR, 1979-1987) and the Defence Meteorological Satellite Programs Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSMI, 1987-2004), and satellite-based observations of chlorophyll a from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS: EOS-Terra satellite) in weekly intervals in circular buffers around each colony site (150 km in radius). Rapid recession of high Arctic seasonal ice cover created a temporally predictable primary production bloom and associated trophic cascade in water gradually exposed to solar radiation. This pattern was largely absent from lower latitudes where little to no sea ice resulted in a temporally variable primary production bloom driven by nutrient cycling and upwelling uncoupled to ice. The relationship between the rate and variability of sea ice recession and colony size of thick-billed murres shows that periodical confinement of the trophic cascade at high latitudes determines the carrying capacity for Arctic seabirds during the breeding period.  相似文献

Pouched mice ovulate spontaneously and have a 4-day cycle (3-5 days). The variation was caused by prolonged oestrus. The vagina opened at about 34 days of age and the first oestrus was experienced at 44 days of age. Females experienced several sterile cycles before their first conception, which occurred at an age of about 56 days. The gestation period in most cases was 21 days and implantation occurred about 4-5 days after mating. The females were not receptive post partum. Litter size varied from 3 to 13 with a mean of 7.1 in young primiparous females and 7.9 in adult multiparous females, indicating that fecundity did not increase with age or parity in this species. Mortality of young was highest during the first 2 days post partum. The young were not attached to the nipples and were weaned at 25 days of age. Females did not cycle during lactation. After lactation most females exhibited one or two oestrous cycles without mating or became oestrous and mated without conceiving, resulting in a litter interval of about 53 days.  相似文献

The gelatinous zooplankton of the Canada Basin were observed with a deep-diving remotely operated vehicle (ROV) during August–September, 2002. Taxa observed fell into four main groups: cnidarians, ctenophores, chaetognaths, and pelagic tunicates. We provide detailed data on the vertical distributions of many taxa from three sites which span the Canada Basin. The most common gelatinous organisms in the surface waters were the ctenophores Mertensia ovum and Bolinopsis infundibulum. These two species were found in very large numbers in the near-surface mixed layer. In the mesopelagic zone, below the transition from the Pacific water layer and the Atlantic water layer, the most common species was Sminthea arctica. Surprising numbers of the scyphomedusa Atolla tenella were found in the deep waters of the basin, along with an undescribed species of narcomedusae. The vertical distributions of the gelatinous zooplankton observed with the ROV show several trends related to the physical properties of the water and geographic location within the basin.  相似文献
