Chest wall and lung volume estimation by optical reflectance motion analysis.J. Appl. Physiol. 81(6):2680-2689, 1996.Estimation of chest wall motion by surfacemeasurements only allows one-dimensional measurements of the chestwall. We have assessed an optical reflectance system (OR), which tracksreflective markers in three dimensions (3-D) for respiratory use. Weused 86 (6-mm-diameter) hemispherical reflective markers arrangedcircumferentially on the chest wall in seven rows between the sternalnotch and the anterior superior iliac crest in two normal standingsubjects. We calculated the volume of the entire chest wall andcompared inspired and expired volumes with volumesobtained by spirometry. Marker positions were recorded by four TVcameras; two were 4 m in front of and two were 4 m behind the subject.The TV signals were sampled at 100 Hz and combined with gridcalibration parameters on a personal computer to obtain the 3-Dcoordinates of the markers. Chest wall surfaces were reconstructed bytriangulation through the point data, and chest wall volume wascalculated. During tidal breathing and vital capacity maneuvers andduring CO2-stimulated hyperpnea, there was a very close correlation of the lung volumes(VL) estimated by spirometry[VL(SP)] and OR[VL(OR)]. Regressionequations of VL(OR)(y) vs.VL(SP)(x,BTPS in liters) for the two subjects were given by y = 1.01x  0.01 (r = 0.996) andy = 0.96x + 0.03 (r = 0.997), and byy = 1.04x + 0.25 (r = 0.97) andy = 0.98x + 0.14 (r = 0.95) for the two maneuvers,respectively. We conclude spirometric volumes can be estimated veryaccurately and directly from chest wall surface markers, and wespeculate that OR may be usefully applied to calculations of chest wallshape, regional volumes, and motion analysis.

The winter growth of winter white lupin (cv. Lunoble) was investigated.Over three consecutive years, 1987–1989, it was sown atdifferent times at Lusignan (France) and in 1989, at nine differentlocations with various sowing times. The production of primordia,the vernalization requirements and the final number of leaveson the main stem were related to field measurements of dailymaximum and minimum temperatures. A statistical model for the main apex growth with a system oftwo equations was developed, with a threshold level for leafprimordia production at 3 °C. The number of leaf primordiaproduced by a vegetative apex (y) in terms of the cumulativesums of temperature over 3 °C (x) followed the curvilinearregression y = 4.76 + 00268x + 00000156x2. The upper and lowertemperature limits for vernalization were estimated as 14 andI °C respectively. The vernalization requirements of a vegetative apex (y) decreasedwhen the number of initials produced (x) increased accordingto the negative exponential regression y = exp (7.2 + 002626.x). The two equations were used for the prediction of the finalnumber of leaves of a lupin crop. The predictive accuracy ofthe model was checked against independent data. The agreementbetween observed and predicted final leaf number was often close,but some deviations did occur with low leaf number. The modeldescribed most of the growth phenomena which occur during thephase sowing to floral initiation of the main stem of a winterlupin crop, and its possible uses are discussed. Animals typically must make a number of successive choices to achieve a goal: e.g., eating multiple food items before becoming satiated. However, it is unclear whether choosing the best first or saving the best for last represents the best choice strategy to maximize overall reward. Specifically, since outcomes can be evaluated prospectively (with future rewards discounted and more immediate rewards preferred) or retrospectively (with prior rewards discounted and more recent rewards preferred), the conditions under which each are used remains unclear. On the one hand, humans and non-human animals clearly discount future reward, preferring immediate rewards to delayed ones, suggesting prospective evaluation; on the other hand, it has also been shown that a sequence that ends well, i.e., with the best event or item last, is often preferred, suggesting retrospective evaluation. Here we hypothesized that when individuals are allowed to build the sequence themselves they are more likely to evaluate each item individually and therefore build a sequence using prospective evaluation. We examined the relationship between self-generated choice order and preference in rhesus monkeys in two experiments in which the distinctiveness of options were relatively high and low, respectively. We observed a positive linear relationship between choice order and preference among highly distinct options, indicating that the rhesus monkeys chose their preferred food first: i.e., a peak-first order preference. Overall, choice order depended on the degree of relative preference among alternatives and a peak-first bias, providing evidence for prospective evaluation when choice order is self-generated.  相似文献

Weconstructed a force treadmill to measure the vertical, horizontal andlateral components of the ground-reaction forces (Fz,Fy,Fx, respectively) and the ground-reaction force moments(Mz,My,Mx), respectively exerted bywalking and running humans. The chassis of a custom-built, lightweight(90 kg), mechanically stiff treadmill was supported along its length bya large commercial force platform. The natural frequencies of vibrationwere >178 Hz for Fz and >87Hz for Fy, i.e., well above thesignal content of these ground-reaction forces. Mechanical tests andcomparisons with data obtained from a force platform runway indicatedthat the force treadmill recordedFz,Fy,Mx andMy ground-reaction forces andmoments accurately. Although the lowest natural frequency of vibrationwas 88 Hz for Fx, thesignal-to-noise ratios for Fx andMz were unacceptable. This devicegreatly decreases the time and laboratory space required for locomotionexperiments and clinical evaluations. The modular design allows forindependent use of both treadmill and force platform.

Experimental animals often prefer small but immediate rewardseven when larger-delayed rewards provide a higher rate of intake.This impulsivity has important implications for models of foragingand cooperation. Behavioral ecologists have hypothesized thatanimals discount delayed rewards because delay imposes a collectionrisk. According to this long-standing hypothesis, delay reducesvalue because an interruption that occurs while an animal iswaiting may prevent it from collecting the delayed reward. Althoughthere have been many experimental demonstrations of animal preferencesfor immediacy, none have included any interruptions. This paperdevelops a simple model of discounting by interruptions andthen tests this model experimentally. The model considers theeffects of interruption rate and duration on choice behavior.The experiment tests the effects of interruptions on the choicebehavior of captive blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) using afactorial design that manipulates the rate and duration of interruptions.The results do not support the discounting-by-interruptionshypothesis. This represents one of several lines of evidencesuggesting that investigators should seek alternative explanationsof the animal impulsivity.  相似文献

为了明确棉花叶片性状(厚度和油点密度)与其对绿盲蝽Apolygus lucorum (Meyer-Dür)抗性的关系,以期为棉花抗盲蝽品种(系)选育提供理论依据,本研究选用对绿盲蝽有不同抗性的20个棉花品种(系)为材料,分别测定其叶片厚度、表皮层厚度和油点密度。结果表明:晋棉26、冀丰989、常D、亚洲棉对绿盲蝽表现为高抗;棉花叶片厚度、表皮层厚度和油点密度在不同生长期均有差异;棉花对绿盲蝽的综合抗性指数与其铃期叶片表皮层厚度和油点密度有显著相关性(y=20.673+0.415x,R2=0.305,P=0.012;y=1.049+0.049x,R2=0.207,P=0.044)。结果显示,在一定的生长期,叶片表皮层厚和多油点棉花品种可以减少绿盲蝽的危害。  相似文献

传粉昆虫在访花时,通常会表现出对某一类型花的偏爱性。本研究利用人工制作的大小、颜色、形态和气味不同的9种类型的花来研究小峰熊蜂Bombus hypocrita的访花偏爱性。结果表明:当增加花的大小、形态、气味等附加特征数时,小峰熊蜂的偏爱性程度与花朵附加特征数有显著相关性(P<0.01)。当花朵颜色由2种增加到4种,熊蜂对紫色花的偏爱性程度降低,但花朵颜色的种类与小峰熊蜂的访花偏爱性没有相关性(P>0.05),花颜色的种类对熊蜂访紫色花的偏爱性影响不大。大小为5 cm的紫花被访次数(108±9次)明显高于大小为3 cm的紫花被访次数(40±4次)(P<0.01),说明熊蜂明显喜欢访大花瓣的紫花。完全盛开的紫花被访次数(129±13次)显著高于刚绽放的花被访次数(26±3次)(P<0.01),说明熊蜂喜欢访盛开的紫花。柠檬味的紫花被访次数(63±8次)明显低于草莓味的紫色花被访次数(88±2次)(P<0.05),说明熊蜂喜欢访草莓味的花朵。  相似文献

We are concerned with the second order recurrence x n+1 = x n f(x n, y n), y n+1 = y n g(x n, y n), where n N 0, x 0 > 0, y 0 > 0, and the reproduction rates f and g simulate predator-prey interaction. Under conditions on the sign of f – 1 and g–1 we show the existence of a nontrivial no-escape region D, i.e. a compact set D {(x, y): x > 0, y > 0} which is invariant under the recurrence and has the property that every sequence enters D after finitely many steps. Under further conditions on the shape of the isoclines {f = 1} and {g = 1} and on the stationary points {f = 1} {g = 1} we are able to show the existence of sustained oscillations.This work has been supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft  相似文献

2002年应用性诱剂对海拔1 200 m山区甘蓝田小菜蛾的发生及防治进行了研究。在第一茬蔬菜生长期有2个诱蛾高峰,诱蛾量(头/盆)分别为11.7±2.4和9.2±1.0;第二茬蔬菜生长期有3个诱蛾高峰,诱蛾量(头/盆)分别为70.9±8.0、16.1±2.5和11.1±1.9。应用性诱剂诱捕山区甘蓝田小菜蛾时,第一茬田间蛾密度与单盆诱捕量相关性不显著,而第二茬菜生长期田间蛾密度与单盆诱蛾量相关性显著(y=0.0116x+0.1614, r=0.9213, P=0.0011)。性诱剂在光期与暗期都可诱到小菜蛾雄虫, 没有明显的诱蛾高峰。应用性诱剂可以使菜田的农药使用减少3~5次,降低田间子代幼虫密度。  相似文献

A model for mortality process in a self-thinning plant populationis proposed. It considers the spacial process but does not requirepositional information of each individual plant due to the assumptionsthat plants with interacting neighbours all greater than themselvesare the first to die and neighbours' sizes are mutually independentat each growth stage. Mortality of plants of size x at age t,M(t, x), is given as M(t, x) = m{P(t, x)}n where P(t, x) isthe proportion of plants of size greater than x at age t, andm and n are parameters. Background

Polyploidy is a major component of eukaryote evolution. Estimation of allele copy numbers for molecular markers has long been considered a challenge for polyploid species, while this process is essential for most genetic research. With the increasing availability and whole-genome coverage of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, it is essential to implement a versatile SNP genotyping method to assign allelic configuration efficiently in polyploids.

Scope

This work evaluates the usefulness of the KASPar method, based on competitive allele-specific PCR, for the assignment of SNP allelic configuration. Citrus was chosen as a model because of its economic importance, the ongoing worldwide polyploidy manipulation projects for cultivar and rootstock breeding, and the increasing availability of SNP markers.

Conclusions

Fifteen SNP markers were successfully designed that produced clear allele signals that were in agreement with previous genotyping results at the diploid level. The analysis of DNA mixes between two haploid lines (Clementine and pummelo) at 13 different ratios revealed a very high correlation (average = 0·9796; s.d. = 0·0094) between the allele ratio and two parameters [θ angle = tan−1 (y/x) and y′ = y/(x + y)] derived from the two normalized allele signals (x and y) provided by KASPar. Separated cluster analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) from mixed DNA simulating triploid and tetraploid hybrids provided 99·71 % correct allelic configuration. Moreover, triploid populations arising from 2n gametes and interploid crosses were easily genotyped and provided useful genetic information. This work demonstrates that the KASPar SNP genotyping technique is an efficient way to assign heterozygous allelic configurations within polyploid populations. This method is accurate, simple and cost-effective. Moreover, it may be useful for quantitative studies, such as relative allele-specific expression analysis and bulk segregant analysis.  相似文献

Six brown lemurs and four black lemurs were presented with two stimulus arrays of one and four raisins. Under a reverse-reward contingency, they received the array they did not choose. All subjects showed a strong preference for the larger array and developed a strong side preference bias. When a large-or-none reward contingency was applied (i.e. no reward followed the choice of the larger array, but this array was given for the choice of the smaller array), six of the 10 subjects overcame their side bias and learned to select the smaller array. When a correction procedure was added, all the remaining subjects mastered the task. Performance was maintained when the original reverse-reward contingency was rerun, and when novel array pairs were presented. Several months after the study, six subjects retained a significant preference for choosing the smaller of the two arrays. The results demonstrate a form of self-control in two prosimian species.  相似文献

The self-thinning behavior of a monoculture forest is examinedfrom a mechanistic viewpoint, in terms of the carbon balanceof trees at the stand level. Two approaches are described: thefirst is based on simple assumptions concerning the balancebetween growth, photosynthesis and respiration; the second usesthe process-based I.T.E. EDINBURGH FOREST model, extended toinclude tree birth and death, to examined the assumptions ofthe first approach at a more mechanistic level and to interpretthe observed variation in the responses to shading and soilfertility in terms of a single model. The first approach leads to a power law relation m n -1/y betweenmean biomass per tree (m) and the number of trees per unit groundarea (n), where y is the exponent characterising the rate atwhich respiration (r) scales with biomass (i.e. r my). Forvalues of y less than 1, m and n are predicted to increase anddecrease, respectively, as powers of time (t) such that thebiomass per unit ground area (M) increases linearly with t forany value of y. When y equals 1, m and n vary exponentiallywith t and M remains constant. When r is assumed to be proportional to stem cambium surfacearea, the value of y is shown to lie in the range 0·5to 1 depending on the rate of stem taper. This leads to slopeson a log m vs. log n self-thinning plot in range -1 to -2 andtypically around -1·5 for rates of taper based on mechanicalrequirements. For the second approach, the I.T.E. EDINBURGH FOREST model,a previously published mechanistic model of plantation growthat the stand level (Thornley, 1991), is extended to naturalstands by introducing average stem birth and death rates thatare functions of the carbon and nitrogen substrate status oftrees. Growth of even-aged and mixed-age forest over about 500years is simulated under a variety of environmental and physiologicalconditions. In general, the forest model predicts a curved log m vs. logn thinning line, but has a reasonably well-defined linear sectionunder most conditions. The slope of the linear portion flattensas the rate at which cambium surface area scales with structuralbiomass increases, in qualitative agreement with the analyticalprediction of the first approach. Quantitative differences betweenthe two approaches are interpreted in terms of the process representedin the forest model. In general, the height of the thinningline increases with irradiance, but is relatively insensitiveto soil nitrogen, with no change in slope in either case. The ‘core-skin’ hypothesis postulates that secondarilythickened plants behave energetically as an inert ‘core’covered by an active ‘skin’, the ‘skin’being two-imensional, the ‘core’ three-dimensional.This would explain the ‘self-thinning ‘or‘–3/2’ rule of plant ecology, that is, the tendencyfor log (dry weight per plant) and log (number of plants perunit area) to progress along a straight line relationship, withslope = – 3/2’. The hypothesis was tested as follows. Plant nitrogen contentwas used as an estimate of the mass of ‘skin’ perplant, and dry weight as an estimate of the mass of the ‘core’.As plants mature the slope of the relationship between y = log(mass of nitrogen per plant) and x = log (mass of dry matterper plant) is expected to decline from an initial value of 1.0towards a final value of 0.66. The intercept of the relationshipis expected to reflect the intrinsic content of ‘skin’per unit of ‘core’. Genotypic variation in thisparameter should cause genotypic differences in the maximumattainable yield of biomass per unit area. The expectations were investigated by fitting the function y= p+qx+r exp – x to 30 sets of data on plant nitrogencontent, plant weight and time in 18 different vegetables. Immunohistological examination of guinea pig cochleas was performedusing a panel of 25 monoclonal antibodies directed to variouslacto-, ganglio- and globo-series carbohydrate epitopes as wellas mucin-type epitopes. Lacto-series structures were found tobe localized at specific sites of the tectorial membrane (TM)and Corti's organ, i.e. 13 fucosyl type 2 chain (Lex) at Kimura'smembrane, marginal band and covering net of TM; 12, 13 difucosyltype 2 chain (Ley) at covering net; and sialosyl-Lex and sialosyl-iat Kimura's membrane and sensory epithelia, particularly sensorytips of hair cells of Corti's organ. In striking contrast, ganglio-seriesstructures (GM3, GD3, GD2, 9-O-Ac-GD3) were detected at spiralganglion cells, neuronal fibres and stria vascularis, but werecompletely absent from Corti's organ and most of the TM. Otherepitope structures defined by various antibodies were not detectableat any location. The functional roles of lacto-series carbohydrateepitopes expressed at TM and Corti's organ remain unknown. However,the expression of Ley (but not other structures) in associationwith developmental deficiency of TM induced by 6-N-propyI-2-thio-uracilin rats suggests that Ley plays some role in normal TM development.The presence of Lex at Kimura's membrane and sialosyl-Lex athair cell sensory tips of Corti's organ suggests the intriguingpossibility that these fucosylated/sialosylated carbohydratestructures play some role in interactions (either attractiveor repulsive) of these inner ear components, which have beenimplicated in the physiology of hearing, i.e. the conversionof sound waves to nerve impulses. cochlea Corti's organ glycoconjugate sialosyl fucosyl type 2 chain tectorial membrane  相似文献

The current study examined the economics of cooperation in controlled-payoffgames by using captive blue jays, Cyanocitta cristata. Thisinvestigation used a special feeding apparatus to test for thestability of cooperative choice in a series of iterated games.The jays experienced experimentally determined game theoreticalpayoff matrices, which determined the distribution of food tothemselves and their opponent, depending on their decision tocooperate or defect. The experiment tested four game matrices,called the cooperate only, defect only, prisoner's dilemma,and opponent control treatments. This study found little cooperationin the defect only and prisoner's dilemma treatments. Cooperationoccurred significantly more often in the opponent control treatment.These findings suggest that the jays attend to short-term consequences;they do not cooperate in the absence of an immediate benefit(defect only), even if a long-term benefit may exist (prisoner'sdilemma). The opponent control treatment suggests that cooperationcan occur when an individual's benefits depend completely onthe actions of others; therefore, generosity is cheap. Thisstudy, therefore, agrees with recent studies in proposing alternativemodels of cooperation.  相似文献

Female mate choice behavior is a critical component of sexual selection, yet identifying the neural basis of this behavior is largely unresolved. Previous studies have implicated sensory processing and hypothalamic brain regions during female mate choice and there is a conserved network of brain regions (Social Behavior Network, SBN) that underlies sexual behaviors. However, we are only beginning to understand the role this network has in pre-copulatory female mate choice. Using in situ hybridization, we identify brain regions associated with mate preference in female Xiphophorus nigrensis, a swordtail species with a female choice mating system. We measure gene expression in 10 brain regions (linked to sexual behavior, reward, sensory integration or other processes) and find significant correlations between female preference behavior and gene expression in two telencephalic areas associated with reward, learning and multi-sensory processing (medial and lateral zones of the dorsal telencephalon) as well as an SBN region traditionally associated with sexual response (preoptic area). Network analysis shows that these brain regions may also be important in mate preference and that correlated patterns of neuroserpin expression between regions co-vary with differential compositions of the mate choice environment. Our results expand the emerging network for female preference from one that focused on sensory processing and midbrain sexual response centers to a more complex coordination involving forebrain areas that integrate primary sensory processing and reward.  相似文献

In situ bacterial net production and growth yield were measuredusing thymidine, leucine incorporation and dark oxygen consumptiontechniques in marine enclosures and in the Bay of Aarhus, Denmark.Bacterial respiration was significantly correlated with thymidine(r2 = 0.42, P < 0.01, y = 0.l2x + 0.054) and leucine (r2= 0.45, P < 0.01, y = 0.09x + 0.043). The range of bacterialgrowth yield, calculated from the relationship net production/netproduction + respiration, was 0.07–0.77 with 74% of theobservations lying in the 0.15–0.45 growth yield interval.Substrate was an important determinant of growth yields. A significantdifference was found between growth yields obtained from anenclosure with added glycine (mean 0.32±0.096) and onewith added inorganic nutrients (mean 0.16±0.051) (P <0.01, t-test). Growth yield showed a weak but significant negativecorrelation with temperature (r2 = 0.0.35, P < 0.001, y =–0.017 + 0.52). No correlation between chlorophyll a andgrowth yield was found (r2 = 0.25, P > 0.05). The resultssuggest that thymidine and leucine techniques reflect the levelsof bacterial production to better than an order of magnitude.The variations found in the growth yield support the notionthat relying on fixed growth yields reduces the accuracy ofestimating gross bacterial production.  相似文献

The proposed method of kinetic analysis of aqueous-phase biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) mixture presupposes representation of kinetic curves for each pair of mixture components, S x and S y , in double-logarithmic coordinates (ln S x ; ln S y ). If PAH mixture conversion corresponds to the multisubstrate model with a common active site, then the graphs in double-logarithmic coordinates are straight lines with the angular coefficients equal to the ratio of respective first-order rate constants kxy = \fracVy Kx Ky Vx k_{x}^{y} = {\frac{{V_{y} K_{x} }}{{K_{y} V_{x} }}} , where K x and K y are half-saturation constants, V x and V y are the maximum conversion rates for substrates S x and S y ; the graph slope does not depend on any concentrations and remains constant during the change of reaction rates as a result of inhibition, induction/inactivation of enzymes or biomass growth. The formulated method has been used to analyze PAH mixture conversion by the culture of Sphingomonas sp. VKM B-2434. It has been shown that this process does not satisfy the multisubstrate model with a single active site. The results suggest that the strain VKM B-2434 contains at least two dioxygenases of different substrate specificity: one enzyme converts phenanthrene and fluoranthene and the other converts acenaphthene and acenaphthylene. The ratios of first-order rate constants have been obtained for these pairs of substrates.  相似文献
