CO2-Gaswechsel von Moosen nach Wasserdampfaufnahme aus dem Luftraum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Otto L. Lange 《Planta》1969,89(1):90-94
Summary The CO2-gas exchange of dry mosses which were exposed to air of high water vapour content has been followed. Some moss species behave as do lichens and aerophilic green algae: they are able to take up enough water vapour to make a rather high photosynthetic activity possible. Other species lack this ability. They need liquid water for reactivation of photosynthesis, as do poikilohydric ferns and phanerogams. In this respect too the mosses are located between the real thallophytes and the cormophytes. From this point of view they are useful objects for studying the relationships between water vapour reactivation, morphological organisation and ecological capability.  相似文献

Summary Green lichens have been shown to attain positive net photosynthesis in the presence of water vapour while blue-green lichens require liquid water (Lange et al. 1986). This behaviour is confirmed not only for species with differing photobionts in the genusPseudocyphellaria but for green and blue-green photobionts in a single joined thallus (photosymbiodeme), with a single mycobiont, and also when adjacent as co-primary photobionts. The different response is therefore a property of the photobiont. The results are consistent with published photosynthesis/water content response curves. The minimum thallus water content for positive net photosynthesis appears to be much lower in green lichens (15% to 30%, related to dry weight) compared to blue-greens (85% to 100%). Since both types of lichen rehydrate to about 50% water content by water vapour uptake only green lichens will show positive net photosynthesis. It is proposed that the presence of sugar alcohols in green algae allow them to retain a liquid pool (concentrated solution) in their chloroplasts at low water potentials and even to reform it by water vapour uptake after being dried. The previously shown difference in δ13C values between blue-green and green lichens is also retained in a photosymbiodeme and must be photobiont determined. The wide range of δ13C values in lichens can be explained by a C3 carboxylation system and the various effects of different limiting processes for photosynthetic CO2 fixation. If carboxylation is rate limiting, there will be a strong discrimination of13CO2, at high internal CO2 partial pressure. The resulting very low δ13C values (-31 to-35‰) have been found only in green lichens which are able to photosynthesize at low thallus water content by equilibraiton with water vapour. When the liquid phase diffusion of CO2 becomes more and more rate limiting and the internal CO2 pressure decreases, the13C content of the photosynthates increases and less negative δ13C values results, as are found for blue-green lichens.  相似文献

The isotope signatures registered in speleothems during tropical cyclones (TC) provides information about the frequency and intensity of past TCs but the precise relationship between isotopic composition and the meteorology of TCs remain uncertain. Here we present continuous δ18O and δ2H data in rainfall and water vapour, as well as in discrete rainfall samples, during the passage of TC Ita and relate the evolution in isotopic compositions to local and synoptic scale meteorological observations. High-resolution data revealed a close relationship between isotopic compositions and cyclonic features such as spiral rainbands, periods of stratiform rainfall and the arrival of subtropical and tropical air masses with changing oceanic and continental moisture sources. The isotopic compositions in discrete rainfall samples were remarkably constant along the ~450 km overland path of the cyclone when taking into account the direction and distance to the eye of the cyclone at each sampling time. Near simultaneous variations in δ18O and δ2H values in rainfall and vapour and a near-equilibrium rainfall-vapour isotope fractionation indicates strong isotopic exchange between rainfall and surface inflow of vapour during the approach of the cyclone. In contrast, after the passage of spiral rainbands close to the eye of the cyclone, different moisture sources for rainfall and vapour are reflected in diverging d-excess values. High-resolution isotope studies of modern TCs refine the interpretation of stable isotope signatures found in speleothems and other paleo archives and should aim to further investigate the influence of cyclone intensity and longevity on the isotopic composition of associated rainfall.  相似文献

During daylight hours, the isotope composition of leaf water generally approximates steady‐state leaf water isotope enrichment model predictions. However, until very recently there was little direct confirmation that isotopic steady‐state (ISS) transpiration in fact exists. Using isotope ratio infrared spectroscopy (IRIS) and leaf gas exchange systems we evaluated the isotope composition of transpiration and the rate of change in leaf water isotopologue storage (isostorage) when leaves were exposed to variable environments. In doing so, we developed a method for controlling the absolute humidity entering the gas exchange cuvette for a wide range of concentrations without changing the isotope composition of water vapour. The measurement system allowed estimation of 18O enrichment both at the evaporation site and for bulk leaf water, in the steady state and the non‐steady state. We show that non–steady‐state effects dominate the transpiration isoflux even when leaves are at physiological steady state. Our results suggest that a variable environment likely prevents ISS transpiration from being achieved and that this effect may be exacerbated by lengthy leaf water turnover times due to high leaf water contents.  相似文献

Adaptation to excessive light is one of the requirements of survival in an alpine environment particularly for poikilohydric organisms which in contrast to the leaves of higher plants tolerate full dehydration. Changes in modulated chlorophyll fluorescence and 820-nm absorption were investigated in the lichens Xanthoria elegans (Link) Th. Fr. and Rhizocarpon geographicum (L.) DC, in the moss Grimmia alpestris Limpr. and the higher plants Geum montanum L., Gentiana lutea L. and Pisum sativum L., all collected at altitudes higher than 2000 m above sea level. In the dehydrated state, chlorophyll fluorescence was very low in the lichens and the moss, but high in the higher plants. It increased on rehydration in the lichens and the moss, but decreased in the higher plants. Light-induced charge separation in photosystem II was indicated by pulse-induced fluorescence increases only in dried leaves, not in the dry moss and dry lichens. Strong illumination caused photodamage in the dried leaves, but not in the dry moss and dry lichens. Light-dependent increases in 820-nm absorption revealed formation of potential quenchers of chlorophyll fluorescence in all dehydrated plants, but energy transfer to quenchers decreased chlorophyll fluorescence only in the moss and the lichens, not in the higher plants. In hydrated systems, coupled cyclic electron transport is suggested to occur concurrently with linear electron transport under strong actinic illumination particularly in the lichens because far more electrons became available after actinic illumination for the reduction of photo-oxidized P700 than were available in the pool of electron carriers between photosystems II and I. In the moss Grimmia, but not in the lichens or in leaves, light-dependent quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence was extensive even under nitrogen, indicating anaerobic thylakoid acidification by persistent cyclic electron transport. In the absence of actinic illumination, acidification by ca. 8% CO2 in air quenched the initial chlorophyll fluorescence yield Fo only in the hydrated moss and the lichens, not in leaves of the higher plants. Under the same conditions, 8% CO2 reduced the maximal fluorescence yield Fm strongly in the poikilohydric organisms, but only weakly or not at all in leaves. The data indicate the existence of deactivation pathways which enable poikilohydric organisms to avoid photodamage not only in the hydrated but also in the dehydrated state. In the hydrated state, strong nonphotochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence indicated highly sensitive responses to excess light which facilitated the harmless dissipation of absorbed excitation energy into heat. Protonation-dependent fluorescence quenching by cyclic electron transport, P700 oxidation and, possibly, excitation transfer between the photosystems were effectively combined to produce phototolerance. The success of a symbiosis: Lichens Lichens are a unique group of organisms composed of one or two alga and a fungus. Together they form species specific thalli. Their common eco‐physiological properties allow colonizing almost all terrestrial habitats, even the most hostile climatic zones on earth. However, as poikilohydrous organisms they also suffer from disadvantages related with their nature. As water content cannot be actively controlled, many lichens experience water‐oversaturation, thus being not able to gain full photosynthetic rates, even though they have otherwise optimal conditions. These eco‐physiological properties set up the frame for which microclimatic situation the realized thallus construction might do best. As all optimizations regarding water uptake also count for water loss, lichens are always at the edge of having either too much or not enough water for optimal carbon gain. So each habitat has its own challenge for the lichen thallus construction and lichens have to fit well into a specific ecological niche.  相似文献

The Dole effect is defined as the difference between the oxygen isotope composition of atmospheric oxygen and seawater (currently 23.5 parts per thousand) and reflects the balance between processes and fractionations associated with O2 consumption and production by the terrestrial and marine biospheres. Isotopic records from ice cores and ocean sediments provide a means of assessing variations in the Dole effect during the late Quaternary but the biogeochemical interpretation of these changes is limited because we are currently unable to account adequately for vegetation effects on the global isotopic balance of atmospheric O2. Here, I show that the previously unquantified influence of canopy transpiration on the isotopic composition of atmospheric water vapour now closes the mass balance budget for the isotopes of atmospheric O2 under the current climate. Using this new finding, the effects of vegetation on the Dole effect have been assessed at the global scale for the mid-Holocene (6000 years ago). The results indicate that the small reduction in the Dole effect in the mid-Holocene represented a fall in the ratio of terrestrial to marine gross primary production from 1.8 to 1.0. Improved understanding of the environmental and physiological processes controlling the oxygen isotopic composition of plants and their feedback on the isotopes of atmospheric O2 offers considerable promise in quantitatively accounting for the changes in biospheric productivity associated with the Dole effect over glacial–interglacial cycles. In addition, such work should provide an as yet unexploited basis for testing the results of climate models against the oxygen isotope composition of Quaternary plant fossils.  相似文献

The oxygen isotope composition of atmospheric CO(2) is an important signal that helps distinguish between ecosystem photosynthetic and respiratory processes. In C(4) plants the carbonic anhydrase (CA)-catalyzed interconversion of CO(2) and bicarbonate (HCO(3)(-)) is an essential first reaction for C(4) photosynthesis but also plays an important role in the CO(2)-H(2)O exchange of oxygen as it enhances the rate of isotopic equilibrium between CO(2) and water. The C(4) dicot Flaveria bidentis containing genetically reduced levels of leaf CA (CA(leaf)) has been used to test whether changing leaf CA activity influences online measurements of C(18)OO discrimination (Delta(18)O) and the proportion of CO(2) in isotopic equilibrium with leaf water at the site of oxygen exchange (theta). The Delta(18)O in wild-type F. bidentis, which contains high levels of CA relative to the rates of net CO(2) assimilation, was less than predicted by models of Delta(18)O. Additionally, Delta(18)O was sensitive to small decreases in CA(leaf). However, reduced CA activity in F. bidentis had little effect on net CO(2) assimilation, transpiration rates (E), and stomatal conductance (g(s)) until CA levels were less than 20% of wild type. The values of theta determined from measurements of Delta(18)O and the (18)O isotopic composition of leaf water at the site of evaporation (delta(e)) were low in the wild-type F. bidentis and decreased in transgenic plants with reduced levels of CA activity. Measured values of theta were always significantly lower than the values of theta predicted from in vitro CA activity and gas exchange. The data presented here indicates that CA content in a C(4) leaf may not represent the CA activity associated with the CO(2)-H(2)O oxygen exchange and therefore may not be a good predictor of theta during C(4) photosynthesis. Furthermore, uncertainties in the isotopic composition of water at the site of exchange may also limit the ability to accurately predict theta in C(4) plants.  相似文献

The ternary effects of transpiration rate on the rate of assimilation of carbon dioxide through stomata, and on the calculation of the intercellular concentration of carbon dioxide, are now included in standard gas exchange studies. However, the equations for carbon isotope discrimination and for the exchange of oxygen isotopologues of carbon dioxide ignore ternary effects. Here we introduce equations to take them into account. The ternary effect is greatest when the leaf-to-air vapour mole fraction difference is greatest, and its impact is greatest on parameters derived by difference, such as the mesophyll resistance to CO(2) assimilation, r(m) . We show that the mesophyll resistance to CO(2) assimilation has been underestimated in the past. The impact is also large when there is a large difference in isotopic composition between the CO(2) inside the leaf and that in the air. We show that this partially reconciles estimates of the oxygen isotopic composition of CO(2) in the chloroplast and mitochondria in the light and in the dark, with values close to equilibrium with the estimated oxygen isotopic composition of water at the sites of evaporation within the leaf.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Recent decades have seen a major surge in the study of interspecific variation in functional traits in comparative plant ecology, as a tool to understanding and predicting ecosystem functions and their responses to environmental change. However, this research has been biased almost exclusively towards vascular plants. Very little is known about the role and applicability of functional traits of non-vascular cryptogams, particularly bryophytes and lichens, with respect to biogeochemical cycling. Yet these organisms are paramount determinants of biogeochemistry in several biomes, particularly cold biomes and tropical rainforests, where they: (1) contribute substantially to above-ground biomass (lichens, bryophytes); (2) host nitrogen-fixing bacteria, providing major soil N input (lichens, bryophytes); (3) control soil chemistry and nutrition through the accumulation of recalcitrant polyphenols (bryophytes) and through their control over soil and vegetation hydrology and temperatures; (4) both promote erosion (rock weathering by lichens) and prevent it (biological crusts in deserts); (5) provide a staple food to mammals such as reindeer (lichens) and arthropodes, with important feedbacks to soils and biota; and (6) both facilitate and compete with vascular plants. APPROACH: Here we review current knowledge about interspecific variation in cryptogam traits with respect to biogeochemical cycling and discuss to what extent traits and measuring protocols needed for bryophytes and lichens correspond with those applied to vascular plants. We also propose and discuss several new or recently introduced traits that may help us understand and predict the control of cryptogams over several aspects of the biogeochemistry of ecosystems. CONCLUSIONS: Whilst many methodological challenges lie ahead, comparative cryptogam ecology has the potential to meet some of the important challenges of understanding and predicting the biogeochemical and climate consequences of large-scale environmental changes driving shifts in the cryptogam components of vegetation composition.  相似文献

In this paper we make comparisons between the observed stable isotopic composition of leaf water and the predictions of the Craig-Gordon model of isotopic enrichment when plants (Cornus stolonifera L.) were exposed to natural, diurnal changes in temperature and humidity in a glasshouse. In addition, we determined the effects of mild water stress on the isotopic composition of leaf water. The model predicted different patterns of diurnal change for the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of leaf water. The observed leaf water isotopic composition followed qualitatively similar patterns of diurnal change to those predicted by the model. At midday, however, the model always predicted a higher degree of heavy isotope enrichment than was actually observed in leaves. There was no effect of mild water stress on the hydrogen isotopic composition of leaf water. For the oxygen isotopic composition of leaf water, there was either no significant difference between control and water-stressed plants or the stressed plants had lower δ18O values, despite the enriched stem water isotopic composition observed for the stressed plants.  相似文献

Several previous studies have investigated the use of the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions in plant materials as indicators of palaeoclimate. However, accurate interpretation relies on a detailed understanding of both physiological and environmental drivers of the variations in isotopic enrichments that occur in leaf water and associated organic compounds. To progress this aim we measured δ18O and δ2H values in eucalypt leaf and stem water and δ18O values in leaf cellulose, along with the isotopic compositions of water vapour, across a north-eastern Australian aridity gradient. Here we compare observed leaf water enrichment, along with previously published enrichment data from a similar north Australian transect, to Craig–Gordon-modelled predictions of leaf water isotopic enrichment. Our investigation of model parameters shows that observed 18O enrichment across the aridity gradients is dominated by the relationship between atmospheric and internal leaf water vapour pressure while 2H enrichment is driven mainly by variation in the water vapour—source water isotopic disequilibrium. During exceptionally dry and hot conditions (RH < 21%, T > 37 °C) we observed strong deviations from Craig–Gordon predicted isotope enrichments caused by partial stomatal closure. The atmospheric–leaf vapour pressure relationship is also a strong predictor of the observed leaf cellulose δ18O values across one aridity gradient. Our finding supports a wider applicability of leaf cellulose δ18O composition as a climate proxy for atmospheric humidity conditions during the leaf growing season than previously documented.  相似文献

Lemna gibba L. B3 was grown under heterotrophic, photoheterotrophic, and autotrophic conditions in water having a variety of hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions. The slopes of the linear regression lines between the isotopic composition of water and leaf cellulose indicated that under the three growth conditions about 40, 70, and 100% of oxygens and carbon-bound hydrogens of cellulose exchanged with those of water prior to cellulose formation. Using the equations of the linear relationships, we estimated the overall fractionation factors between water and the exchanged oxygen and carbon bound-hydrogen of cellulose. At least two very different isotope effects must determine the hydrogen isotopic composition of Lemna cellulose. One reflects the photosynthetic reduction of NADP, while the second reflects exchange reactions that occur subsequent to NADP reduction. Oxygen isotopic composition of cellulose apparently is determined by a single type of exchange reaction with water. Under different growth conditions, variations in metabolic fluxes affect the hydrogen isotopic composition of cellulose by influencing the extent to which the two isotope effects mentioned above are recorded. The oxygen isotopic composition of cellulose is not affected by such changes in growth conditions.  相似文献

The hypothesis that CO2 gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlaF) of lichens vary according to the light regimes of their original habitat, as observed in vascular plants, was tested by analysing the photosynthetic performance of 12 populations of seven dorsoventral, foliose lichens collected from open, south-exposed rocks to densely shaded forests. Light response curves were induced at optimum thallus water content and ChlaF emission curves at the species-specific photon flux at which the quantum yield of CO2 assimilation is the highest and is saturating the photosynthetic process. Photosynthetic pigments were quantified in crude extracts. The results confirm that the maximum rate of gross photosynthesis is correlated with the chlorophyll content of lichens, which is influenced by light as well as by nitrogen availability. Like leaves, shade tolerant lichens emit more ChlaF than sun-loving ones, whereas the photosynthetic quantum conversion is higher in the latter.  相似文献

Domestication of algae by lichen‐forming fungi describes the symbiotic relationship between the photosynthetic (green alga or cyanobacterium; photobiont) and fungal (mycobiont) partnership in lichen associations ( Goward 1992 ). The algal domestication implies that the mycobiont cultivates the alga as a monoculture within its thallus, analogous to a farmer cultivating a food crop. However, the initial photobiont ‘selection’ by the mycobiont may be predetermined by the habitat rather than by the farmer. When the mycobiont selects a photobiont from the available photobionts within a habitat, the mycobiont may influence photobiont growth and reproduction ( Ahmadjian & Jacobs 1981 ) only after the interaction has been initiated. The theory of ecological guilds ( Rikkinen et al. 2002 ) proposes that habitat limits the variety of photobionts available to the fungal partner. While some studies provide evidence to support the theory of ecological guilds in cyanobacterial lichens ( Rikkinen et al. 2002 ), other studies propose models to explain variation in symbiont combinations in green algal lichens ( Ohmura et al. 2006 ; Piercey‐Normore 2006 ; Yahr et al. 2006 ) hypothesizing the existence of such guilds. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Peksa & ?kaloud (2011) test the theory of ecological guilds and suggest a relationship between algal habitat requirements and lichen adaptation in green algal lichens of the genus Lepraria. The environmental parameters examined in this study, exposure to rainfall, altitude and substratum type, are integral to lichen biology. Lichens have a poikilohydric nature, relying on the availability of atmospheric moisture for metabolic processes. Having no known active mechanism to preserve metabolic thallus moisture in times of drought, one would expect a strong influence of the environment on symbiont adaptation to specific habitats. Adaptation to changes in substrata and its properties would be expected with the intimate contact between crustose lichens in the genus Lepraria. Altitude has been suggested to influence species distributions in a wide range of taxonomic groups. This is one of the first studies to illustrate an ecological guild, mainly for exposure to rainfall (ombrophiles and ombrophobes), with green algal lichens.  相似文献

Field measurements of CO2exchange by lichens are difficult because these poikilohydric organisms rely on direct hydration by rain, dew or fog. Continuous enclosure of thalli in conditioned, measurement cuvettes is, therefore, not experimentally reasonable. Porometric instruments with brief enclosure times, have proved useful for studies of lichen gas exchange but allow only spot measurements and recording is not easily possible for extended time periods. We describe a newly developed, automatically operating cuvette that allows long-term monitoring of lichen photosynthetic and respiratory CO2exchange in the field. Samples, e.g. flat stone slabs covered with epilithic lichens, are positioned on the base of the cuvette where, when the cuvette is open, they are exposed to the same environmental conditions as naturally growing thalli. At regular intervals (typically 30 min), an upper lid automatically encloses the lichen forc. 3 min in a stirred cuvette; CO2exchange is measured using IRGA techniques and microclimate data are recorded. The successful operation of the cuvette is illustrated by means of diel time courses of CO2exchange for selected, very different weather conditions.  相似文献

In tropical lowland forests, corticolous crustose green algal lichens are abundant and highly diverse. This may be related to adaptation to prevailing microenvironmental conditions including, for example, high precipitation and low light intensities. In the understory of a tropical lowland rain forest in French Guiana, we studied the morphology of crustose green algal lichens and measured gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence. We found that (i) periods of thallus suprasaturation with water were reduced by the presence of water-repelling surface structures of mycobiont hyphae at the thallus surface and the medulla; (ii) photosynthesis was adapted to the low light intensities present in the understory; and (iii) photosynthesis was rapidly activated in fluctuating light. The combination of these three mechanisms enables corticolous lichens to implement specific morphological and physiological strategies, which may favour growth in the limiting understory habitat of tropical lowland rain forests.  相似文献

Thermocouple psychrometry was used to investigate the waterrelations of eight species of lichens from sites of contrastingwater status. Lichens from exposed, dry habitats had lower thallusK concentrations but lower osmotic potentials than plants frommesic sites. As a result, K contributed a much smaller proportionto osmotic potential in plants from dry sites, suggesting thatlow cytoplasmic K concentrations are important for desiccationtolerance. While containing less water at saturation, plantsfrom dry habitats had lower thallus elastic moduli and lowerapoplastic water fractions. They therefore lost turgor at lowerrelative water contents than plants from wetter sites. The significanceof these results for the water relations of lichens is discussed.Copyright1995, 1999 Academic Press Lichen, desiccation, stress, thermocouple psychrometry  相似文献
