Synopsis Observations were made on intra- and interspecific aggressive interactions among the fishes living in the rubble/sand coral reef habitat in St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. Four species (beaugregory — Stegastes leucostictus; ocean surgeonfish — Acanthurus bahianus; doctor fish — A. chirurgus; common squirrelfish — Holocentrus rufus) which sheltered in holes on the reef all actively defended one to several shelter sites at dusk. Short-term shelter side fidelity was observed in three of these four species. Agonistic interactions over both food and shelter occurred during the daytime but much less frequently than agonistic interactions over shelter at dusk. Dominance in intraspecific aggression was determined almost completely by the relative sizes of the individuals involved, with the larger individuals dominating in 95–98% of all encounters. A similar, but less strong, relationship between size and dominance existed for interactions between closely related species. For aggressive encounters between unrelated species, however, both relative sizes and species identity determined the outcome. Species, both diurnal and nocturnal, which strongly defend several shelter sites may have a strong and disproportionate impact on the sheltering behavior of other fishes. Intraspecific and interspecific defense of shelter sites may determine the patterns of mortality that result from predation, thereby influencing population abundances and assemblage composition.  相似文献

Both secondary metabolites and inorganic acids have been hypothesized to protect adult ascidians from predation, raising the possibility of alternative defensive strategies in these sessile, soft-bodied, benthic invertebrates. The objective of this investigation was to determine if ascidian species from the Western Atlantic have these chemical defenses against fish predators, and if so, to determine their location within the body of the ascidian. The palatability of crude organic extracts of whole ascidians, as well as the dissected tunics, viscera, and gonads (when possible) were determined at natural volumetric concentrations using laboratory feeding assays with the bluehead wrasse, Thalassoma bifasciatum. Acidified food pellets were also assayed to determine the effect of lowered pH on predation. Sixteen of the 17 species tested had deterrent organic extracts from some region of the body (Aplidium constellatum, Aplidium stellatum, Ascidia interrupta, Ascidia nigra, Botrylloides sp., Clavellina picta, Didemnum candidum, Didemnum vanderhosti, Diplosoma listerianum, Ecteinascidia turbinata, Eudistoma capsulatum, Eudistoma hepaticum, Rhopalaea abdominalis, Styela plicata, Symplegma rubra, and Trididemnum solidum). The location of the deterrent secondary metabolites was isolated in the gonad in all three solitary species, raising the possibility that these defenses are passed on to eggs or larvae. Nine ascidian species sequestered acid in their tunics (A. interrupta, A. nigra, A. stellatum, D. candidum, D. vanderhosti, E. capsulatum, E. hepaticum, R. abdominalis, and T. solidum) at levels that were effective in deterring fish predation (pH≤3.0). Only one species (Botrylloides nigrum) had neither chemical defense. Results of this study indicate that there is not a clear trade-off between the presence of secondary metabolites and inorganic acid defenses in ascidians, suggesting that these defenses are redundant, or that alternative chemical defenses may have evolved for different predators or for different stages in the life history of the ascidians producing them.  相似文献

The largest population of endangered golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia, GLTs) decreased from approximately 330 to 220 individuals between 1995 and 2000 due to a dramatic increase in predation at sleeping sites. We used behavioral data from eight social groups in this population to test two hypotheses: First, if GLTs attempt to mitigate the risk of predation at sleeping sites, they should reduce their rates of scent marking just prior to retirement. Second, if the benefits of scent marking prior to entering the sleeping site merit an increase in the rate of marking, then tamarins should increase their rate of pre-retirement scent marking during the breeding season, when such behavior would have its greatest impact on reproductive fitness. We used a generalized linear model (GLM) repeated-measures analysis to compare rates of daytime scent marking with rates of marking just prior to retirement for males and females. In addition, we compared scent marking prior to retiring in the nonbreeding season to marking rates before retirement in the breeding season for males and both sexes considered concurrently. Contrary to our expectations, GLTs significantly increased their rates of scent marking during the 30 min prior to entering their sleeping site-an observation driven by an increase in male (but not female) rates of marking. Rates of marking before entering the sleeping site were greater in the nonbreeding season compared to the breeding season, when both sexes were considered concomitantly and when males were evaluated alone. We conclude that GLTs do not attempt to minimize predation risk by decreasing scent marking in the period before they enter their sleeping site, and that tamarins do not scent mark at this time of day in order to transmit information about reproductive status or to control reproduction of subordinates. We speculate that scent marking in the 30 min prior to entering sleeping sites may serve to reduce predation risk by enabling tamarin groups to return quickly to favored sleeping sites in the evening when crepuscular predators are active.  相似文献

Synopsis The temperate wrasse, Pseudolabrus celidotus (Labridae), was studied in a shallow rocky reef habitat to asses how ecological and behavioural factors influence its within habitat patterns of distribution. Emphasis was placed on examining the mechanisms underlying size/age related changes in dispersion and habitat use. Juveniles (< 100 mm SL) were found to be aggregated whereas adults tended to be more randomly dispersed. This pattern appeared to be a product of both (a) ecological, and (b) behavioural factors. (a) Juveniles were closely associated with shelter (macro-algae) which was located in patches throughout the habitat. Their local distribution was probably not related to the distribution of their major prey items. Shelter dependence appears to decrease with growth and fish switched from feeding on micro-crustaceans present in macro-algae to those associated with bare rock — coralline turf areas. Adults foraged throughout larger home ranges, but fed preferentially in microhabitats where their prey items (e.g. bivalves) were most abundant. (b) Juveniles tended to aggregate into loose foraging schools. This tendency declined with age and was associated with a corresponding increase in the rate of aggressive interactions among individuals of a cohort. Consequently, individuals of the same size became more spaced out as they grew. Between cohort association or aggression was rare and apparently unimportant in determining local patterns of distribution. Many interspecific foraging associations and aggressive interactions were recorded. However, with the probable exception of interspecific territoriality by the blenny Forsterygion varium, these behaviours probably had only a transitory influence on the distribution of the wrasse.  相似文献

A number of potential mimetic relationships between coral reef fishes have been described, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Similarities in colour between species have often been attributed to aggressive mimicry (where predators resemble models in order to deceive prey), however this has not been tested. The fang blenny, Plagiotremus rhinorhynchos is a specialized predator that feeds on tissues of other fishes. Some individuals appear to mimic the harmless cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus in order to deceive fish visiting cleaning stations, thereby increasing access to food. In this study, the ecological relationship between the mimic and model was examined at Kimbe Bay (Papua New Guinea) and the hypothesis that colour similarities represent facultative aggressive mimicry was experimentally evaluated. Some juveniles exhibited a striking resemblance to the juvenile colouration of the cleaner wrasse, but only when in close proximity to the wrasse and only when similar in size. As predicted for mimics, P. rhinorhynchos co-occurred with L. dimidiatus, but was rare relative to the model. Among site comparisons showed that the abundance of mimetic type blennies was positively correlated with the abundance of juvenile cleaner wrasses. Approximately 50% of all P. rhinorhynchos were found 1 m from the nearest L. dimidiatus, a distance significantly shorter than expected if they were not associated. A cleaner wrasse removal experiment was carried out to test whether the colour displayed by the blenny and its foraging success were contingent upon the presence of a model. In all cases, removal of the model prompted a rapid colour change to a general non-mimetic colouration in P. rhinorhynchos. Removal of L. dimidiatus also resulted in a ~20% reduction in the average foraging success of the blenny compared to controls, supporting the hypothesis that the blenny is a facultative aggressive mimic of the cleaner wrasse.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to assess shelter use and behaviour of juvenile Spotted Wolffish, Anarhichas minor, using time-lapse video. Information about the behaviour of Spotted Wolffish and its habitat utilization is sparse due to the great depth at which this species lives. Four experiments were conducted using one or two fish per tank, with and without a shelter. The positions and movements of fish in the tanks and interactions between fish were monitored over 24-h periods. In experiments in which no shelter was available, Spotted Wolffish spent very little time exploring the water column. They did not show fidelity to a particular area on the bottom of the tank and exhibited few signs of aggressiveness to each other. When a shelter was made available, fish spent most of their time in the shelter or close to the shelter. The presence of a single shelter did not enhance aggressive behaviours in fish kept in pairs. When day and night observations were compared, no clear diel pattern emerged. The Canadian recovery plan for Spotted Wolffish calls for research aimed at describing their use of demersal habitats. The present study suggests that shelter availability might be an important feature of the habitat requirements of juvenile Spotted Wolffish.  相似文献

In eastern Hokkaidô, Japan, the native crayfish Cambaroides japonicus de Haan has been declining rapidly while the exotic crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana has been expanding its range. We speculated that the observed displacement of Cambaroides by Pacifastacus is partly due to an interference interaction for shelter between the two species. We studied the impacts of Pacifastacus on Cambaroides by testing experimentally whether intensity of interference, the outcome of dominance order and shelter occupancy differed between single- and mixed-species combinations of the two species. Pacifastacus showed less defensive behaviours towards Cambaroides than to conspecifics. In contrast, Cambaroides exhibited more defensive behaviours towards Pacifastacus than to conspecifics. Pairwise comparison of agonistic behaviours in mixed species groups revealed that Pacifastacus exhibiting frequently more aggressive attacks while Camaboides showing more defensive behaviours to their respective counterparts. Dominance in aggressive encounter generally dictated shelter occupancy in mixed-species and Pacifastacus pairs but not in Cambaroides pairs. Because shelter utilization, when these are not limited in supply, was much more frequent in Cambaroides than Pacifastacus, Cambaroides suffered interference from both conspecifics and heterospecifics when they competed for a single shelter. Pacifastacus, however, did not show any change in shelter occupancy in the presence or absence of conspecics or heterospecifics. Inferiority in aggressive interactions and shelter occupancy can therefore be a critical disadvantage for Cambaroides if shelters are limited in natural situations.  相似文献

Many species of fishes are aggressive when placed in small aquaria. Aggression can negatively affect the welfare of those individuals toward whom it is directed. Animals may behave aggressively in order to defend resources such as food, shelter, mates, and offspring. The decision to defend depends on the distribution of resources and on ecological factors such as number of competitors, amount of available space, and amount of habitat complexity. This study tested the effects of these factors on aggression in a common aquarium fish, the Midas cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus). The study found that time spent behaving aggressively was not associated with small-scale differences in group size or available space. Aggression was significantly lower in a large aquarium with a complex habitat. Aquaria of sizes typically used in the companion animal (pet) hobby did not provide optimal welfare for cichlids housed with aggressive conspecifics. The public should be aware that this and similar species require larger aquaria with complex habitat, which elicit more natural behavior.  相似文献

Because the interests of mutualists are not perfectly aligned, conflicts between partners often arise, rendering mutualism unstable by allowing the evolution of cheating. The dwarf palm Chamaerops humilis is engaged in a nursery pollination mutualism with a specific weevil Derelomus chamaeropsis. In exchange for pollen dispersal, dwarf palms provide pollinators with food, shelter and egg-laying sites, but pollinators can develop only within male inflorescences. Here we show that weevils lay eggs in female inflorescences but processes associated with fruit development prevent larval development. The cost imposed by developing larvae probably differs between male and female plants, explaining why only females defend their inflorescences. Female palms thus cheat their pollinating weevil, and pollinators are expected to 'punish' (avoid) them. We found no evidence for such punishment: weevils visit female plants and the duration of visits to male and female inflorescences does not differ. Thus mutualists do not always co-operate and cheating may not be necessarily punished.  相似文献

Lion tamarin monkeys are among a small number of primates that repeatedly use a few tree holes for the majority of their sleeping sites. To better understand why lion tamarins rely on tree holes as sleeping sites, we compared the physical characteristics of frequently used sleeping sites, infrequently used sleeping sites, and randomly selected forest locations at multiple spatial scales. From 1990 to 2004, we recorded 5,235 occurrences of sleeping site use by 10 groups of golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) in Poço das Antas Reserve, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Of those, 63.6% were tree holes. Bamboo accounted for an additional 17.5% of observations. Frequently used tree holes were more likely to be found in living trees and their entrances were at lower canopy heights than infrequently used tree holes. We also found that frequently used sleeping sites, in comparison to random sites, were more likely to be found on hillsides, be close to other large trees, have a lower percent of canopy cover, and have larger diameter at breast height. Topography and small‐scale variables were more accurate than were habitat‐level classifications in predicting frequently used sleeping sites. There are ample tree holes available to these lion tamarins but few preferred sites to which they return repeatedly. The lion tamarins find these preferred sites wherever they occur including in mature forest and in relics of older forest embedded in a matrix of secondary forest. Am. J. The present studies were performed to establish the effects of the size and number of artificial holes produced in the zona pellucida (ZP) on hatching and trophoblast outgrowth in vitro. Limited partial zona dissection (PZD) produced small, narrow incisions, and zona drilling with acidic Tyrode's (AT) across a larger area in the ZP was used to produce bigger round holes. Some embryos were micromanipulated once; others were micromanipulated several times. Blastocysts hatched preferentially through the artificial gaps, but completion of hatching was dependent on the size of the hole. Only 16% (26/167) of PZD embryos migrating through narrow holes hatched completely; the remainder were trapped in a typical figure-eight shape. Seventy-two percent (43/60) of those migrating through larger PZD holes hatched, but trophoblast outgrowth was not observed. Significantly (P less than 0.001) more AT-blastocysts hatched (248/270; 92%) and showed trophoblast outgrowth (176/248; 70%). Simultaneous hatching through several openings was rarely observed in AT-embryos (14/167; 8%), but this did occur in 36% (73/201) of the PZD embryos. Trapping of PZD-embryos could be almost entirely avoided by drilling with AT elsewhere on the ZP. Embryos with multiple holes in their zonae preferentially hatched through the largest opening. The results suggest that the ability of microsurgically treated human embryos to fully hatch in vitro, should be carefully (re)assessed prior to application of clinical micromanipulation systems. Micromanipulated embryos with small holes in their zonae may be rescued by performing an additional more aggressive opening procedure elsewhere on the ZP.  相似文献

Suitable sleeping sites as potentially restricted resources are suggested to shape sociality in primates. We investigated sleeping site ecology of a rain-forest dwelling sportive lemur in eastern Madagascar for the first time. Using radiotelemetry, we characterized the type, quality and usage of sleeping sites as well as social sleeping habits of 11 focal individuals of the weasel sportive lemur (Lepilemur mustelinus) during the dry and the onset of the rainy season. Morphometric measurements provided additional information. The sexes showed an unusual sexual dimorphism for primates. Males and females did not differ in body length, but females surpassed males in body mass suggesting female dominance. Both sexes used dense vegetation and holes in hollow trees high above the ground as shelters for sleeping during the day. No sex difference in the quality of tree holes was found, but focal individuals used tree holes more often than open sleeping sites in dense vegetation. Both sexes showed high sleeping site fidelity limited to two to six different sites that they used primarily solitarily. The results imply that suitable sleeping sites are limited and survival of this species will strongly depend on the availability of mature rain forests with suitable hollow trees. Furthermore, these findings provide evidence of a solitary sleeping and ranging system in this rain-forest dwelling sportive lemur with suitable sleeping sites as defendable resources.  相似文献

Body size plays an important role in the outcome of aggressive encounters between males of the symbiotic freshwater miteUnionicola formosa. Since intruding males displace resident males as often as resident males successfully defend their territory (mantle cavity of a mussel), resident males do not hold a competitive advantage during male-male aggressive encounters. Larger male size probably enhances a male's success when competing for receptive females.  相似文献

Aggression is a behavioural strategy for securing resources (food, mates and territory) and its expression is strongly influenced by their presence and value. While it is known that resource holders are generally highly aggressive towards intruding consexuals and usually defeat them, the underlying neuronal mechanisms are not known. In a novel intruder–resident paradigm for field crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus), we show that otherwise submissive losers of a preceding aggressive encounter readily fight and often defeat aggressive winners after occupying an artificial shelter. This aggression enhancing effect first became evident after 2 min residency, and was maximal after 15 min, but absent 15 min after shelter removal. The residency effect was abolished following non-selective depletion of biogenic amines from the central nervous system using reserpine, or semi-selective depletion of octopamine and dopamine using α-methyl-tyrosine, but not following serotonin depletion using α-methyl-tryptophan. The residency effect was also abolished by the treatment with phentolamine, an α-adrenergic receptor antagonist, or epinastine, a highly selective octopamine receptor blocker, but not by propranolol, a ß-adrenergic receptor antagonist, or by yohimbine, an insect tyramine receptor blocker. We conclude that crickets evaluate residency as a rewarding experience that promotes aggressive motivation via a mechanism involving octopamine, the invertebrate analogue of noradrenaline.  相似文献

At least 51 species of fishes are facultative symbionts of sea anemones. Most of the behavioural, ecological and physiological aspects of these associations including their costs and benefits are unknown. We recorded the behaviour and the habitat use of eight assemblages (three or ten specimens each) of the juvenile wrasse Thalassoma amblycephalum dwelling among the tentacles of the two sea anemones Entacmaea quadricolor (clonal type), and Heteractis magnifica at a coral reef in southern Japan during 16 months in daylight hours. There are only two past records of this facultative association, one from east Africa and one from Indonesia. The wrasse remained close to and was occasionally in physical contact with the host when foraging amongst the tentacles. When frightened, they took shelter among corals, away from the host anemone. The wrasse co-existed with the anemonefishes Amphiprion frenatus in E. quadricolor and A. ocellaris in H. magnifica. By using forced host contact tests ex situ and scanning electron microscopy examination of the fish epidermis, we show that juveniles of this wrasse are protected from E. quadricolor, but possibly not from H. magnifica. We suggest that juvenile T. amblycephalum dwelling among the tentacles of sea anemones are cleanerfish with an unusual client, in that they appear to clean mucus and, or, necrotic tissue from the sea anemone host.  相似文献

Most demersal species of damselfish (family Pomacentridae) are territorial herbivores that aggressively chase other fishes away from their nests. This study investigates whether the aggressive territorial damselfish, Stegastes leucostictus, modifies behaviours and home range area use in a less aggressive, non-territorial species, the slippery dick wrasse, Halichoeres bivittatus (family Labridae). Damselfishes and wrasses are ubiquitous and abundant members of coral reef fish assemblages around the world; hence, this study has broader implications beyond the two Caribbean species chosen for this study. A manipulative field experiment consisted of transplanting one or three S. leucostictus into artificial shelters positioned within adult or adjacent to juvenile H. bivittatus home ranges. The introduction of damselfish had little effect on the size of home range areas of juvenile or adult wrasses, but had a significant effect on the location of their home ranges. The damselfish also affected adult microhabitat use but did not affect use by juveniles. In addition, there was an increase in damselfish-wrasse interactions that resulted in a significant reduction in the amount of time adult wrasses could spend foraging or in a foraging assemblage. It was concluded that aggressive interactions with territorial damselfish affect individual H. bivittatus space use and may consequently affect the spatial distribution of H. bivittatus populations.  相似文献

Patterns of space use and the individual-based behaviour of microhabitat selection were investigated in three intertidal gobiid fishes, Bathygobius fuscus, Chaenogobius annularis and C. gulosus, from Kyushu, southern Japan. While the three species tended to occupy slightly different types of tidepool, their patterns of distribution largely overlapped in the field. Laboratory experiments involving choice of shelter (i.e. underneath a stone plate) and four different substrate types were conducted to examine size- and time-related variation in habitat selection. The shelter area was preferred by small- and large-sized C. gulosus (day and night), large C. annularis (day and night) and small C. annularis (daytime only), while no preference was evident in small B. fuscus (day and night) and small C. annularis (night). Patterns of substrate choice also differed among species, size groups and between day and night. Size differences in substrate use were evident in B. fuscus and C. gulosus but not in C. annularis, while diel differences were shown by all species groups except large B. fuscus. The gravel and sand substrates tended to be used more frequently than the bare rock substrate, but the strength of preference of a particular substrate type varied among individuals/species. Our results demonstrate that habitat selection by the three gobiid species is variable depending on species, body size and time of day, which must ultimately bear upon mitigating intra-/interspecific interactions in tidepool environments.  相似文献
