Steroid balance studies were conducted on 24 conventional and 12 germfree male rats, 90-120 days old, fed diets containing either 20% safflower or 20% coconut oil. Both germfree and conventional rats fed the safflower oil diets had significantly lower serum cholesterol levels and significantly higher liver cholesterol levels than did the rats fed coconut oil. No significant differences in total fecal neutral sterols, coprostanol, Delta(7)-cholestenol, or total fecal bile acid excretion were seen between dietary groups of rats of either status. There was no evidence of qualitative differences in fecal bile acid excretion as a function of diet. The increased liver cholesterol was in the ester form, with cholesteryl linoleate the largest single component. There was no significant difference in the cholesterol content of the skin, muscle, adipose tissue, or gastrointestinal tract. The significance of a large increase in liver cholesteryl ester, lowered serum cholesterol, and no change in steroid excretion is discussed.  相似文献

The hypocholesterolemic efficacy of various animal oils was compared in rats given a cholesterol-enriched diet. After acclimatization for one week, male F344 DuCrj rats (8 weeks of age) that had been fed with a conventional diet were assigned to diets containing 5% of oil from emu (Dromaius), Japanese Sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis, Heude), sardine, beef tallow, or lard with 0.5% cholesterol for 6 weeks. After this feeding period, the concentrations of serum total cholesterol and of very-low-density lipoprotein + intermediate-density lipoprotein + low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol in the sardine oil group were significantly lower than those in the other groups. The serum high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol concentration in the Japanese Sika deer oil group was significantly higher than that in the other groups. The atherosclerotic index and liver cholesterol concentration in the sardine oil and Japanese Sika deer oil groups were significantly lower than those in the other groups. The fecal cholesterol excretion by the Japanese Sika deer oil group was significantly higher than that of the other groups, except for the sardine oil group, and the fecal bile acid excretion by the sardine oil group was significantly higher than that of the other groups, except for the lard group. These results suggest that Japanese Sika deer oil reduced the atherosclerotic index and liver cholesterol concentration in the presence of excess cholesterol in the diet as well as sardine oil did by increasing the excretion of cholesterol from the intestines of rats.  相似文献

The effects of feeding two levels of rice bran oil (RBO) on the growth, lipid parameters, and fatty acid composition of the plasma and liver of rats (Wistar strain) were compared with those produced on animals which had been fed the same levels of peanut oil (PNO). The control animals were fed synthetic diets containing 5 and 20% peanut oil (PNO) and the experimental groups were fed similar diets, containing the same level of rice bran oil (RBO). There was no significant difference with respect to the organ weights between the control and the experimental groups. In general, groups fed 20% oil gained more weight than groups fed 5% oil. The animals which received rice bran oil in their diet had, in general, comparatively lower levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids. On the other hand, animals receiving 20% rice bran oil in their diet, showed an increase of 20% in high density lipoproteins (HDL-C), within 18 weeks (p<0.05), when compared to the animals fed with peanut oil. Similarly, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) were lower in RBO-fed groups, than in the PNO-fed groups. There was, however, no significant differences in the cholesterol/phospholipid (C/P) ratio of the two groups. Analysis of plasma and of liver fatty acids indicated, in a general way, the type of fat consumed. There were no significant difference in the P/S ratio, nor any in the oleic/linoleic, oleic/stearic, palmitoleic/palmitic, oleic/palmitic, and oleic/palmitoleic ratios. Furthermore, levels of saturated (SAFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids were identical in both the groups. Our laboratory has reported that the hypolipidemic effect of rice bran oil (RBO) is not entirely explained by its fatty acid composition. Because RBO has a greater content of the unsaponifiables, which also lower cholesterol compared to most vegetable oils, we wanted to know whether oryzanol or ferulic acid, two major unsaponifiables in RBO, has a greater cholesterol-lowering activity. Forty-eight F(1)B Golden Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) (BioBreeders, Watertown, MA) were group housed (three per cage) in cages with bedding in an air-conditioned facility maintained on a 12-h light/dark cycle. The hamsters were fed a chow-based hypercholesterolemic diet (HCD) containing 10% coconut oil and 0.1% cholesterol for 2 weeks, at which time they were bled after an overnight fast (16 h) and segregated into 4 groups of 12 with similar plasma cholesterol concentrations. Group 1 (control) continued on the HCD, group 2 was fed the HCD containing 10% RBO in place of coconut oil, group 3 was fed the HCD plus 0.5% ferulic acid and group 4 was fed the HCD plus 0.5% oryzanol for an additional 10 weeks. After 10 weeks on the diets, plasma total cholesterol (TC) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (very low- and low-density lipoprotein) concentrations were significantly lower in the RBO (-64% and -70%, respectively), the ferulic acid (-22% and -24%, respectively) and the oryzanol (-70% and -77%, respectively) diets compared to control. Plasma TC and non-HDL-C concentrations were also significantly lower in the RBO (-53% and -61%, respectively) and oryzanol (-61% and -70%, respectively) diets compared to the ferulic acid. Compared to control and ferulic acid, plasma HDL-C concentrations were significantly higher in the RBO (10% and 20%, respectively) and oryzanol (13% and 24%, respectively) diets. The ferulic acid diet had significantly lower plasma HDL-C concentrations compared to the control (-9%). The RBO and oryzanol diets were significantly lower for plasma triglyceride concentrations compared to the control (-53% and -65%, respectively) and ferulic acid (-47% and -60%, respectively) diets. Hamsters fed the control and ferulic acid diets had significantly higher plasma vitamin E concentrations compared to the RBO (201% and 161%, respectively) and oryzanol (548% and 462%, respectively) diets; the ferulic acid and oryzanol diets had significantly lower plasma lipid hydroperoxide levels than the control (-57% and -46%, respectively) diet. The oryzanol-fed hamsters excreted significantly more coprostenol and cholesterol in their feces than the ferulic acid (127% and 120%, respectively) diet. The control diet had significantly greater aortic TC and FC accumulation compared to the RBO (115% and 89%, respectively), ferulic acid (48% and 58%, respectively) and the oryzanol (74% and 70%, respectively) diets. However, only the RBO and oryzanol diets had significantly lower aortic cholesterol ester accumulation compared to the control (-73% and -46%, respectively) diet. The present study suggests that at equal dietary levels, oryzanol has a greater effect on lowering plasma non-HDL-C levels and raising plasma HDL-C than ferulic acid, possibly through a greater extent to increase fecal excretion of cholesterol and its metabolites. However, ferulic acid may have a greater antioxidant capacity via its ability to maintain serum vitamin E levels compared to RBO and oryzanol. Thus, both oryzanol and ferulic acid may exert similar antiatherogenic properties, but through different mechanisms.  相似文献

Male Sprague-Dawley rats, 4 weeks (young) or 8 months (adult) of age, were fed one of three purified diets free of or containing either 0.5% cholesterol or 0.5% oxidized cholesterol (92% oxidized cholesterol) for 3 weeks. Feeding of oxidized cholesterol caused a significant reduction of food intake, body weight gain, and relative liver weight in rats of both ages. The activity of the HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase of liver microsomes, the key enzymes in cholesterol synthesis and catabolism, respectively, was lowered by oxidized cholesterol compared to the diet free of cholesterol in both ages, and the difference was significantly in the adult. On the other hand, the activity of Δ6-desaturase of liver microsomes, a key enzyme in linoleic acid metabolism to arachidonic acid, was significantly increased by oxidized cholesterol in adult rats, leading to the increase in linoleic acid desaturation index [(20:3n-6 + 20:4n-6)/18:2n-6] in liver phospholipids. Oxidized cholesterol reduced the concentration of cholesterol in serum and liver. Also, the fecal excretion of acidic steroids was lower in rats fed the oxidized cholesterol diet than in those fed the cholesterol-free diet. Thus, oxidized cholesterol significantly influenced cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism in particular in adult rats.  相似文献

To determine the influence of dietary coix on lipid metabolism, the effect of coix on plasma, liver, and fecal lipid components was studied using Sprague-Dawley male rats. All rats were divided into four groups, and the rats of each group were fed the coix-lard diet, coix-soybean oil diet, or the respective control diets (containing 1% cholesterol each) for 27 days. Plasma and liver cholesterol levels in the coix-lard diet group significantly decreased as compared with those in the control group, whereas there was no effect on the fecal excretion of cholesterol. The decreases in the concentrated liver triglyceride and the increases in the fecal excretion of triglyceride were found in coix-soybean oil diet group. Moreover, liver and fecal phospholipid levels in both coix diet groups significantly increased. But there were no significant changes in plasma and fecal bile acids in either coix diet group. These results suggest the possibilities that coix may have an inhibitory action on cholesterol synthesis in liver, a facilitating effect on biliary excretion of triglyceride, and an acceleratory action on phospholipid synthesis in liver.  相似文献

Based on studies showing that excretion of cholesterol is elevated in rats fed oxidized linoleic acid, we hypothesized that cholesterol metabolism is enhanced under such oxidative stress. Liver cholesterol biosynthesis and secretion and fecal cholesterol excretion were studied in rats fed for 4 weeks diets containing 10% oxidized linoleic acid. Incubation of liver slices with 1-(14)C acetate and intraperitoneal injection of 5-(3)H-mevalonate showed the occurrence of enhanced hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis and elevated liver cholesterol secretion in animals subjected to oxidative stress. In addition, impaired liver cholesterol uptake was suggested. Higher levels of excreted cholesterol observed in the experimental animals were accompanied by augmented levels of liver phospholipids, primarily phosphatidylcholine, which most likely increased to enable the excessive cholesterol excretion. This study thus demonstrates that ingestion of oxidized lipids causes profound alterations in cholesterol metabolism.  相似文献

Eggs are a popular source of dietary cholesterol, but their consumption does not necessarily result in an increased serum cholesterol concentration. We investigated the cholesterol-lowering activity of egg white protein (EWP) and its potential mechanism in rats. The consumption of EWP resulted in a decreased concentration of cholesterol in the serum, liver and intestinal mucosa. The excretion of fecal neutral sterols and bile acids was greater by rats fed with EWP than by those fed with casein. The ratio of cholesterol and bile acids in the micellar phase to those in the solid phase was lower in the intestinal contents from rats fed with EWP than from those fed with casein. These results suggest that the cholesterol-lowering activity of EWP can be attributed to lowering the cholesterol absorption by intervening in the micellar formation in the intestines.  相似文献

The effects of a mixture of organisms on cecal fermentation and cholesterol metabolism in sham-operated and cecectomized rats were investigated. Male F344 rats, allocated into four groups: cecectomized rats fed a mixture of organisms (CEMO), cecectomized rats fed rice bran (CERB), sham-operated rats fed a mixture of organisms (SHMO), and sham-operated rats fed rice bran (SHRB) for 4 weeks. The diets had 0.5% cholesterol and 0.125% sodium cholate added. There were no significant differences in the body weight gain and food intake among the groups. The cecal pH in the SHMO group was significantly lower than that in the other groups. The total cholesterol and (VLDL + IDL + LDL)-cholesterol concentrations in serum were significantly lower in the SHMO group than that in the SHRB group, and the triacylglycerol concentration in the sham-operated rats tended to decrease compared to the cecectomized rats. The fecal cholesterol excretion in the CERB group was higher than that in the other groups, and that in the SHMO group was significantly higher than in the SHRB group. The acetic acid, propionic acid, n-butyric acid, and total short-chain fatty acid concentrations in the cecum contents were significantly higher in the SHMO group than those in the other groups. Streptococcus, Bifidobacterium, and Lactobacillus in the SHMO group tended to be higher than the other groups and Bacteroidaceae in the CEMO and CERB groups were significantly higher than that in the SHMO group. The results demonstrate that the mixture of organisms was fermented with the cecal contents and that the metabolites such as short-chain fatty acid lowered the serum total cholesterol and liver cholesterol concentrations in the rats fed a cholesterol-containing diet.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether diosgenin suppresses cholesterol absorption in rats, and to examine relevant changes in cholesterol and bile acid metabolism. Diosgenin fed with the diet for 1 week inhibited cholesterol absorption as determined by the serum isotope ratio technique, as well as by measuring in the feces the amount of unabsorbed radioactivity from orally administered [3H]cholesterol. In addition, diosgenin suppressed the serum and liver uptake of radioactivity from co-administered [3H]cholesterol as well as the accumulation of liver cholesterol in the cholesterol-fed rat; diosgenin was substantially more active than cholestyramine or beta-sitosterol. In vitro, diosgenin had no effect on the activity of rat pancreatic esterase. Diosgenin decreased the elevated cholesterol in serum LDL and elevated cholesterol in the HDL fraction of cholesterol-fed rats; diosgenin had no effect on serum cholesterol in normocholesterolemic rats. In contrast to cholestyramine, diosgenin markedly increased neutral sterol excretion without altering bile acid excretion; in vitro, diosgenin had no effect on bile acid binding. Diosgenin treatment increased hepatic and intestinal cholesterol synthesis as well as the activity of hepatic HMG CoA reductase. This was accompanied by increased biliary concentration of cholesterol, but not of bile acids. Diosgenin had no effect on cholesterol synthesis when added to normal rat liver homogenates. It was concluded that diosgenin interferes with the absorption of cholesterol of both exogenous and endogenous origin; such interference is accompanied by derepressed, i.e., increased, rates of hepatic and intestinal cholesterol synthesis. The increased unabsorbed cholesterol together with enhanced secretion of cholesterol into bile resulted in increased excretion of neutral sterols without affecting the biliary and fecal excretion of bile acids.  相似文献

The serum cholesterol (total, free, esterified, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and oxidized LDL) levels of rats fed a diet containing, by weight, 1% cholesterol and 0.5% cholic acid increased, as compared with those of rats fed a normal diet. The levels, especially of total cholesterol, LDL and oxidized LDL, were reduced significantly in a dose-dependent manner, in rats given Coptidis Rhizoma extract orally at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg body wt./day for 30 days. These results indicate that Coptidis Rhizoma extract is effective in reducing the pathological damage caused by hypercholesterolemia, through lowering of serum cholesterol levels. In addition, Coptidis Rhizoma extract reduced the level of liver cholesterol, but it did not reduce that of fecal cholesterol, suggesting that the cholesterol level-lowering effect resulted from the reduction of cholesterol synthesis, not the enhancement of its excretion. Furthermore, the serum thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance level decreased after oral administration of Coptidis Rhizoma extract, indicating that Coptidis Rhizoma could prevent hypercholesterolemic disease through reducing lipid peroxidation. This study demonstrates that Coptidis Rhizoma may be a useful therapy for hypercholesterolemia through reducing oxidative stress and cholesterol levels.  相似文献

The effect of dietary fats with varying degrees of unsaturation in the presence of different concentrations of vitamin E on tissue lipid levels was studied in rats. Rats were fed either menhaden oil, olive oil or coconut oil at 15% levels with either 0.1, 0.3 or 0.6 mg/g of vitamin E as alpha-tocopherol for four weeks. Rat serum and liver were analyzed for total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triacylglycerol and phospholipids. In addition, fatty acid composition of serum lipids was also analyzed. Serum total cholesterol and triacylglycerol were significantly lower in rats fed menhaden oil than in those fed olive or coconut oil, while the HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in serum of rats fed menhaden and olive oil than in those fed coconut oil. Levels of vitamin E in the diet had only a significant effect on serum cholesterol and liver phospholipids. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant positive relationship between serum triacylglycerol and total cholesterol, and a negative correlation between triacylglycerol and HDL-cholesterol, and between total and HDL-cholesterol.In the liver, total cholesterol was significantly higher in rats fed coconut oil than in rats fed menhaden oil. Total liver phospholipids were lower in rats fed either coconut oil or olive oil compared to those fed menhaden oil, especially with higher levels of vitamin E intake. Higher levels of vitamin E in the diet appear to increase triacylglycerol and phospholipids in livers of rats fed menhaden oil. In the liver a significant negative correlation was observed between phospholipids and cholesterol. The type and degree of unsaturation (polyunsaturated fatty acids in menhaden oil, monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil and saturated fatty acids in coconut oil) significantly affected plasma and tissue lipids.  相似文献

We examined the effect of dietary taurine on the concentrations of serum cholesterol and apolipoprotein in lipoprotein fractions of Six-month-old ovariectomized, which were used as a model of hypercholesterolemia in postmenopausal woman, or sham operated rats. Taurine significantly reduced the serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations only in the ovariectomized rats. In contrast, taurine significantly lowered the serum apolipoprotein B concentration and serum very low-density lipoprotein-apolipoprotein E concentration only in the sham operated rats. The serum total and high density lipoprotein-apolipoprotein E concentrations were significantly lower in the rats fed taurine than in those fed the control diet regardless of whether they had undergone ovariectomy. The esterified cholesterol level in the liver was significantly lower and the level of hepatic cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase activity was significantly higher in the rats fed taurine than in those fed the control diet. The total bile acids concentration in the feces and intestinal contents of rats fed taurine were significantly higher than those in rats fed the control diet regardless of whether they had undergone ovariectomy. In the sham-rats, taurine accelerated bile acid synthesis and excretion, thereby increasing cholesterol consumption. The increased cholesterol consumption might be compensated by accelerating cholesterol synthesis and/or reducing the synthesis and release of very low-density lipoprotein from the liver. But in the ovariectomized rats, although taurine also accelerated bile acid synthesis and excretion, cholesterol demand might be compensated by excess cholesterol in the blood.  相似文献

The exogenously hypercholesterolemic (ExHC) rat is a strain segregated from SD rats with a high response to dietary cholesterol. To understand the underlying mechanism(s) for this hypercholesterolemia, the interactive effects of dietary fatty acid and the susceptibility of rats to dietary cholesterol on the serum cholesterol concentration and hepatic mRNA abundance of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor, cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase (7alpha-hydroxylase) and 3-hydroxyl-3methylglutaryl (HMG) CoA reductase were examined. Both strains were fed on a diet supplemented with 10% each of olive, safflower or coconut oil with or without the addition of 1% cholesterol for one week. The ExHC rats fed on olive, safflower and coconut oil in combination with cholesterol respectively resulted in a 3.5-, 2.0- and 2.1-fold higher serum cholesterol concentration than that in the animals fed on the corresponding dietary fats without any supplementation of cholesterol (p < 0.01 by dietary cholesterol or type of fat). The dietary cholesterol dependent-elevation of serum cholesterol in the SD rats was less than 1.5-fold (p<0.01) and there was no dietary fat effect. The ExHC rats fed on the safflower oil-containing diet supplemented with cholesterol resulted in a higher mRNA abundance of the LDL receptor and 7alpha-hydroxylase than in the corresponding fat-fed rats without cholesterol (p<0.05). There was no dietary cholesterol-dependent change of mRNA abundance in either strain fed on olive or coconut oil, except for a decreased abundance of HMG CoA reductase mRNA in the olive oil-fed ExHC rats and coconut oil-fed Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (p<0.05). These results indicate that the hepatic mRNA abundance of the LDL receptor and of 7alpha-hydroxylase depended on the dietary combination of cholesterol and a fatty acid and suggest that a linoleic acid-rich diet may alleviate exogenous hypercholesterolemia by activating the process involved in the hepatic uptake and biliary excretion of serum cholesterol.  相似文献

Normal and alloxan-diabetic male mice (Crj-ICR) were fed a diet containing 0.5% cholesterol for 5 and 10 weeks, and gallbladder bile was analyzed for cholesterol, phospholipids and bile acids, feces for sterols and bile acids, and plasma and liver for cholesterol, phospholipids, and triglycerides. Normal mice developed no gallstones but the diabetic mice developed cholesterol gallstones with an incidence of 70% by 5 weeks and 80% by 10 weeks after feeding of the cholesterol diet. Diabetic mice fed the ordinary diet also developed stones (23%) by 10 weeks. In the diabetic mice, the gallbladder was enlarged about threefold, and biliary lipid concentration, diet intake, and fecal excretion of sterols and bile acids increased but body weight decreased. Cholic acid and beta-muricholic acid comprised over 40% each of the total biliary bile acids in normal mice, but cholic acid increased to about 80% and beta-muricholic acid decreased to a few percent in the diabetic mice. Fecal excretion of bile acids increased after cholesterol feeding in both normal and diabetic mice, but the increased bile acid in the normal animals was beta-muricholic acid and that in the diabetic mice was deoxycholic acid. The mice that developed gallstones showed a marked increase in biliary cholesterol value and decreases in gallbladder bile and bile acid concentration, but no difference in biliary and fecal bile acid composition, bile acid synthesis, fecal sterols, or plasma and liver lipid levels. Cholesterol absorption was increased in the diabetic mice when examined by plasma 14C/3H ratio and fecal 14C-labeled sterol excretion after a single oral administration of [14C]cholesterol and a simultaneous intravenous injection of [3H]cholesterol. These data led to the conclusion that cholesterol gallstones developed in alloxan-diabetic mice fed excess cholesterol, due to the hyperphagia and the enhancement of cholesterol absorption caused by increases in the synthesis and secretion of cholic acid.  相似文献

The anhydrous milk fat ghee is one of the important sources of fat in the Indian diet. Our earlier studies showed that rats fed diets containing greater than 2.5 wt% of ghee had lower levels of serum cholesterol compared with rats fed diets containing groundnut oil. To evaluate the mechanism of the hypocholesterolemic effect of ghee, male Wistar rats were fed a diet containing 2.5 or 5.0 wt% ghee for a period of 8 weeks. The diets were made isocaloric with groundnut oil. Both native and ghee heated at 120 degrees C containing oxidized lipids were included in the diet. The ghee in the diet did not affect the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase activity in the liver microsomes, but it significantly increased biliary excretion of cholesterol, bile acids, uronic acid, and phospholipids. The rats fed ghee had lower levels of cholesterol esters in the serum as well as in the intestinal mucosa. Both native and oxidized ghee influenced cholesterol metabolism. These results indicate that supplementation of diets with ghee lipids would increase the excretion of bile constituents and lower serum cholesterol levels.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate the cholesterol-reducing effect of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) completed by elevated excretion of fecal neutral steroids and/or bile acids. Blood and liver lipid profiles, fecal neutral steroids, bile acids, and mRNA and protein expression of the genes relevant to cholesterol homeostasis were measured and analyzed in C57BL/6J mice fed a cholesterol-rich diet with 2% caprylic acid or capric acid for 12 weeks. Blood total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) levels were reduced significantly as compared to diet with palmitic acid or stearic acid. Caprylic acid promoted the excretion of fecal neutral steroids, especially cholesterol. The excretion of fecal bile acids, mainly in the form of cholic acid was enhanced and accompanied by elevated expression of mRNA and the protein of hepatic cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1). These results indicate that MCFAs can reduce blood cholesterol by promoting the excretion of fecal cholesterol and cholic acid.  相似文献

Urinary and fecal endogenous steroid excretion of fed or fasted New Zealand white rabbits was determined by the isotopic steady state method after subcutaneous implantation of radioactive cholesterol. While plasma cholesterol was increasing during a 9-day fast, fecal steroid excretion decreased to 10% of the excretion rates in the fed state. Refeeding the fasted rabbits led to a decrease in plasma cholesterol and an increase in fecal endogenous steroid excretion. Urinary steroid excretion, which represented 18% of total endogenous steroid excretion for fed animals, decreased during fasting and increased during refeeding, but these changes were relatively small. The small intestine, cecum, and colon of fed or fasted rabbits had similar endogenous steroid was acidic steroid. During attempts to alter the circulating bile acid concentration by supplying deoxycholate (200 mg/day) to fed rabbits or cholestyramine (2 g/day) to fasted rabbits, plasma cholesterol concentration did not change to the same extent as during fasting or refeeding, respectively. The decreased cholesterol catabolism and the hypercholesterolemia that are seen in the fasting rabbit may result from decreased clearance of plasma cholesterol.  相似文献

The effects of nasunin, a major anthocyanin in eggplant, and its aglycone, delphinidin, on the serum cholesterol conpentration were determined in rats fed with a cholesterol-enriched diet. The serum total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentrations tended to be decreased and increased, respectively, by feeding nasunin and delphinidin, while the fecal excretion of both cholesterol and bile acids tended to be increased by feeding with the anthocyanins. There was no difference between the nasunin and delphinidin activity to decrease serum total cholesterol, nor to increase serum HDL-cholesterol or the fecal excretion of cholesterol and bile acids. These results suggest that the slightly lower serum total cholesterol concentration in rats fed with nasunin and delphinidin may in part be due to inhibition of the intestinal absorption of both cholesterol and bile acids by these anthocyanins, and that the delphinidin moiety of nasunin mainly contributes to this activity.  相似文献

The effects of three forms of alginate (free acid, sodium and calcium salts) on ingestion and excretion of cholesterol in the rat were studied. For two weeks, Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a cholesterol-rich diet containing 3% alginate from the brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum. The food efficiency of the three types of alginate was: Na-alginate > Ca-alginate > alginic acid. A significant increase in the weight of cecum was also observed in alginate diets. Alginate was not effective in preventing the elevation of serum total cholesterol levels, although irregularly changing patterns were observed. The cholesterol level of liver showed a tendency to decrease with alginate feeding, while fecal excretion of cholesterol increased.  相似文献
