SUMMARY 1. Two rooted freshwater macrophytes ( Lagarosiphon major (Ridley) Moss; Myriophyllum triphyllum Orchard) were grown in two lakes of differing trophic status on sediments collected from an eutrophic lake. In the two experiments (summer and winter) in the oligotrophic lake (Lake Taupo, New Zealand), the relative growth rates of both species were approximately double those recorded in the experiments in the eutrophic take (Lake Rotorua, New Zealand). These growth responses occurred even though the light and temperature regimes were similar at the experimental sites in both lakes and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients were higher in the eutrophic lake water.
2. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) analysis of both lake waters indicated that the oligotrophic water had approximately 10-fold more DIC than the eutrophic water. This corresponded, at natural pH, to a 2-fold higher concentration of free-CO2 in the oligotrophic lake water (49 μM) than in the eutrophic lake water (23 μM). Photosynthetic experiments demonstrated that the maximum rates of photosynthesis were 2.46 and 2.25-fold higher in L. major and M. triphyllum , respectively, when the shoots were incubated in Lake Taupo water at Lake Taupo levels of free-CO2 relative to Lake Rotorua water at Lake Rotorua levels of free-CO2.
3. It is concluded that these differences in photosynthetic rates would lead approximately to a 2-fold difference in growth rate, thus explaining the growth responses observed in the field experiments.  相似文献

Two lakes of contrasting trophic state in the central NorthIsland of New Zealand were sampled monthly for protozoan ciliatesand potential food resources. Oligotrichs dominated numbersin both lakes. Subdominants in oligotrophic Lake Taupo includedAskenasia, Pscudobalanion and Urotri-cha, and in eutrophic LakeOkaro Prorodon, Coleps, Urocentrum, Stentor and Spirostomumwere important. Biomass was dominated by large predatory ciliatesand Stentor in Lake Taupo, and Prorodon and Stentor in LakeOkaro. The importance of Prorodon and Stentor to ciliate biomassis unusual and has not been reported for northern hemispherelakes. Small ciliates (<20 µm) capable of consumingparticles <2 µm were a major component of the ciliatecommunity in Lake Taupo. Peaks in ciliate abundance occurredat the same time in both lakes: in autumn, at the beginningof mixis and in spring. Ciliates were vertically stratifiedduring mixis and stratification in both lakes. The effect wasmore pronounced during deoxygenation of the hypolimnion in LakeOkaro which excluded oligotrichs and introduced benthic ciliates.Ciliates were less abundant (mean 40001–1 in Lake Okaroand 9001–1 in Lake Taupo) than in comparable northerntemperate lakes. There was no correlation between the seasonaldistribution of ciliates and chlorophyll a, primarily causedby a winter peak in chlorophyll a dominated by large speciesof phytoplankton in Lake Taupo, at a time when ciliate numberswere low. The only consistent, significant correlations weretotal ciliate numbers and individual species of ciliates withbacterial concentrations in both lakes and with picophytoplanktonin Lake Taupo.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of long-term research regarding the algal biodiversity of the Sikhote-Alin biosphere reserve, Primorsky region (Russian Far East). The algal flora is compised of 675 species represented by 839 subspecific taxa from seven divisions: Cyanophyta, 77 (91 including subspecific taxa); Euglenophyta, 18 (21); Chlorophyta, 84 (86); Streptophyta, 137 (169); Rhodophyta, 3; Ochrophyta, 355 (468): Diatomophyceae, 331 (444), Chrysophyceae, 6, Xanthophyceae, 16, Phaeophyceae, 2; Dinophyta, 1. The algal floras of ecologically different reserve water bodies are described, including the brackish, Blagodatnoe Lake, the shallow freshwater Golubichnoe Lake, the alpine Solontsovskie Lakes, the rapid cold-water Serebryanka and Dzhigitovka rivers, and the lowland Kolumbe River. The taxonomic composition of the algal flora has been analysed. Differences between the algal communities of lakes and rivers are described and rare species are noted. The algal flora of the Sikhote-Alin biosphere reserve is currently the richest and most diverse of the six reserves studied in the Primorsky region.  相似文献

The freshwater ultraoligotrophic Lake Labynkyr is located near the Pole of Cold in the northern hemisphere (Yakutia, Russia). The lake is covered by ice during 240 days a year. We undertook several expeditions to the lake during the ice and open water periods for sampling ice fouling, plankton and periphyton that were then analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy. As a result, we identified a high biodiversity of diatoms—123 species and intraspecific taxa from 53 genera, among them 3 species were new for Russia and 26 taxa were new for the algal flora of Yakutia. The oligo- and xenosaprobionts and their variations dominate—71 taxa. 18 Species were evaluated as tolerant to cold oligotrophic waters, 12 occurred on the ice bottom, and 62 in the water column under ice (0–25 m). 104 taxa were found during the open water period, 70 taxa were identified in the periphyton. We showed the diatom flora of Lake Labynkyr to be unique compared with other lakes of Yakutia and to share taxa with the diatom flora of Lake Baikal. The diatoms being indicators of the global climate changes and ecological status of lakes, our data can be used as an evidence of such changes as well as to be useful studies of biogeography and history of formation of flora in Arctic and Subarctic waters.

The diatom flora and limnology of lakes in the Amery Oasis,East Antarctica   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The diatom flora of three lakes in the ice-free Amery Oasis, East Antarctica, was studied. Two of the lakes are meltwater reservoirs, Terrasovoje Lake (31 m depth) and Radok Lake (362 m depth), while Beaver Lake (>435 m depth) is an epishelf lake. The lakes can be characterized as cold, ultra-oligotrophic and alkaline, displaying moderate (Radok and Terrasovoje lakes) to high (Beaver Lake) conductivities. There was no diatom phytoplankton present in any of the three lakes. While 34 benthic diatom taxa were identified from modern and Holocene sediments of Terrasovoje and Radok lakes, a 30-cm long sediment core recovered in Beaver Lake was barren. Five species (Luticola muticopsis, Muelleria peraustralis, Pinnularia cymatopleura, Psammothidium metakryophilum, P. stauroneioides) are endemic to the Antarctic region. All identified taxa are photographically documented and brief notes on their taxonomy, biogeography and ecology are provided. The most abundant diatom taxa are Amphora veneta, Craticula cf. molesta, Diadesmis spp, M. peraustralis and Stauroneis anceps. Internal phosphorus recycling (IPR) is an important nutrient source driving algal growth and eutrophication in lakes. The complexity of eutrophication behaviours caused by high IPR complicates lake management and undermines restoration efforts. Hence, knowledge about the possible types of bifurcation behaviours caused by high IPR is essential for effective and sustainable lake eutrophication management. For this purpose, numerical bifurcation analysis is performed on an algae‑phosphorus model to investigate how IPR drives complex and rich eutrophication behaviours in two tropical and two subtropical lakes. The two tropical lakes are Tasik Harapan and Sunway Lagoon in Malaysia, while the two subtropical lakes are Lake Fuxian and Lake Taihu in China. For each specified level of IPR, co-dimension one bifurcation analysis is performed by means of XPPAUT. Co-dimension two bifurcation analysis is then carried out by means of MatCont. At low IPR, Lake Fuxian exhibits reversible behaviour, accompanied by higher external phosphorus loading (EPL) thresholds. Lake Fuxian is also more conducive to stable equilibrium and its lake dynamics are easily predictable. At moderate IPR, Sunway Lagoon is likely to exhibit stable equilibrium, accompanied by possible shifting between two stable steady states (hysteresis behaviour) and oscillations. With higher IPR, Lake Taihu and Tasik Harapan are prone to irreversibility, accompanied by lower EPL thresholds. Because of increased complexity in lake dynamics in Lake Taihu and Tasik Harapan, small changes in EPL or in algal mortality rates could trigger various transitions in lake dynamics. Overall, high IPR can trigger unexpected sharp increases in algal concentration and can reduce the resilience of an oligotrophic lake. For shallow lakes, high IPR would cause unexpected sharp increases in algal concentrations, undermine resilience of lakes, complicate lake management, and delay lake recovery process.  相似文献

Quantitative analysis of siliceous algal microfossils (diatoms and chrysophytes) in a radiometrically dated core of Lake Ontario sediments shows striking modifications of the flora produced and preserved, apparently as a result of anthropogenic modification of nutrient loadings to the lake, Qualitatively similar microfossil assemblages were deposited during the period ca. 1700–1815. A single major event is recorded in assemblages deposited ca. 1769. Between this event horizon and ca. 1815 there was an apparent increase in algal production, but minimal change in species composition. A major disturbance occurred at the level of the Ambrosia horizon, ca. 1831–1847. Assemblages deposited between ca. 1855 and 1900 indicate increasing eutrophication. We infer that silica limitation became important by about 1860 and that the system reached its greatest effective production ca. 1900. Major modification of the flora occurred in the period ca. 1900–1945, with most local extinctions of major indigenous populations occurring ca. 1920–1945. Assemblages deposited in the period ca. 1945–1975 are composed of some stenothermal populations also present in pre-disturbance assemblages, a large component of benthic and nearshore planktonic species, and a number of apparently planktonic populations rarely recorded from large temperate lakes, particularly species of the genus Nitzschia. Our results indicate that the major factor driving species succession in Lake Ontario was phosphorus enrichment and consequent depletion of available silica supplies. Our results also show the importance of a species' physical niche in determining its survival under these conditions.  相似文献

We report here the results of an experimental study designed to compare algal responses to short-term manipulations of zooplankton in three California lakes which encompass a broad range of productivity (ultra-oligotrophic Lake Tahoe, mesotrophic Castle Lake, and strongly eutrophic Clear Lake). To assess the potential strength of grazing in each lake, we evaluated algal responses to a 16-fold range of zooplankton biomass. To better compare algal responses among lakes, we determined algal responses to grazing by a common grazer (Daphnia sp.) over a range ofDaphnia densities from 1 to 16 animals per liter. Effects of both ambient grazers andDaphnia were strong in Castle Lake. However, neither ambient zooplankton norDaphnia had much impact on phytoplankton in Clear Lake. In Lake Tahoe, no grazing impacts could be demonstrated for the ambient zooplankton butDaphnia grazing had dramatic effects. These results indicate weak coupling between phytoplankton and zooplankton in Clear Lake and Lake Tahoe, two lakes which lie near opposite extremes of lake trophic status for most lakes. These observations, along with work reported by other researchers, suggest that linkages between zooplankton and phytoplankton may be weak in lakes with either extremely low or high productivity. Biomanipulation approaches to recover hypereutrophic lakes which aim only to alter zooplankton size structure may be less effective if algal communities are dominated by large, inedible phytoplankton taxa.  相似文献

Little research has been made on the litoral algal flora of unpolluted high mountain lakes and streams. Since the algal flora is often used to estimate the water quality, it is of great value to know more about the ecology of benthic forms living under extreme oligotrophic conditions. An investigation was made of the benthic and littoral microphytic vegetation of Esteragne torrent, and Lac de Port-Bielh in the High Pyrenees. Both waters combine a low calcium content with a consistently basic pH. A comparison of their flora with that of other lakes may help to deal with the problem of whether the algal flora is determined more by the calcium content or the pH. The algal flora of Esteragne torrent differs little from that of low-calcium streams of the central European highlands. In Lac de Porth-Bielh there is a distinct depth-zonation among the dominant algae. The dominant taxa at a depth of 0–0,5 metres are: Schizothrix lacustris f. lutescens, Sch. calcicola, Gloeocapsa tornensis, Pleurocapsa minor with Cyanostylon microcystoides and Hydrococcus cesatii particularly on the undersides of the stones; from 0,5 to 1,5 m: a massive growth of Nostoc zetterstedtii; from 2,5 to 4,5 m: Schizothrix funalis; from 7 m: Nitella flexilis. In addition the lake includes a number of rare and little known forms such as? Onkonema sp., of. Desmosiphon maculans, Lyngbya lachneri, Homeothrix sinensis, Chantransia chalybea v. profunda, Siphononema polonicum status chamaesiphonoides. Green algae were almost completely absent from the upper zones, in contrast to the usual findings. The littoral flora has a very distinctive character, and is not directly comparable with that usually found in lakes with either high or low calcium content. A certain resemblance to lakes with a high calcium content can be found only if all the forms present particularly with lower abundances are considered. The very strong development of lithophytes should be emphasized in contrast to their usually low density in lakes with low calcium content. The systematic section deals with systematic and taxonomic problems in a number of difficult forms.  相似文献

Studies of the seasonal and spatial distribution of the epipelic algal standing crop and primary productivity were conducted in Marion Lake, British Columbia. Possible biological, chemical, and physical factors controlling the epipelic algal community dynamics were also investigated. The epipelic algal flora of the lake was very diverse, however, it can be generally considered as acidophilic associations of algae. The vertical distribution of the epipelic algae is partially influenced by the amount of light reaching the sediment, but also strongly influenced by the grazing of animals and erosion by wave action. Temperature, light, and grazing by animals all appear to influence the seasonal fluctuations in the algal standing crop. Concentrations of nutrients immediately above the sediment surface appear to be less important as controlling factors. The most important variables influenceing the primary productivity of the epipelic community are temperature, total algal standing crop, and light. Nutrients, again, appear to be less important as controlling factors. The study supports the idea that epipelic algal growth is high in shallow, low nutrient lakes and that the epipelic algal productivity is extremely important to the total energy budget of the lake.  相似文献

Samples from two flood plain lakes (Umuorodog-wum I and II) and one permanent natural lake (Oguta) of the lower Niger Delta system (Imo State, Nigeria), representing the outcome of a single sampling campaign in January 1993, are analysed taxonomically. Emphasis is given on the diatom flora but also on some other accompanying algae; a list of 172 algal taxa is currently presented for the area. The relative species abundance patterns and autecology data confirm the frequent occurrence of taxa capable of tolerating the wide environmental fluctuations determined by local conditions of climate and water chemistry. Comparisons are made between the studied lakes including one disturbed site. The results on the water chemistry and biology corroborate findings from similar ecosystems in West Africa. An apparatus is described which allows groundwater discharge through lake beds to be measured directly. On transects at right angles to-the shore-line of Lake Taupo, New Zealand, discharges Mere found to decrease rapidly with distance from the shore. Three assays for nitrogen demand were compared on samples ofnatural plankton and on green and blue-green algal species inculture. The most reliable guide was selective luxury uptakeof nitrogen by the plankton after enrichment with a 10-to-1(wt/wt) mixture of inorganic N and P. Ammonium transport capacity,measured either directly (cultures) or by Vmax for uptake ofthe NH4+ analogue methylammonium (lakewaters), was generallyhigh in lakewaters with low dissolved inorganic N-to-P ratiosand in N-deficient cultures of green algae. By contrast, transportcapacity was much reduced in both natural and cultured populationsof heterocystous blue-green algae growing under conditions oflow combined inorganic nitrogen. Ammonium enhancement assays(heterotrophic CO2, fixation after NH4+ enrichment) were conductedat monthly intervals on eutrophic Lake Rotorua. There was astrong, negative correlation between this indicator of N deficiencyand dissolved inorganic N-to-P ratios below a threshold of 6:1.Ammonium enhancement was not, however, a reliable indicatorof combined inorganic N-demand by populations of heterocystousblue-green algae. All three assays provided strong evidenceof a persistent shortage of nitrogen relative to phosphorusfor algal production in Lake Rotorua.  相似文献

设计了双因素四组处理(对照组,加螺组,加藻组,螺藻组)的室外受控实验,模拟湖泊沿岸带水华蓝藻的堆积以及底栖螺类的牧食活动对沉水植物苦草生长的影响。结果表明:蓝藻堆积(水体叶绿素a浓度为220μg/L)对苦草的生长具有明显的抑制作用,和对照组以及加螺组相比,加藻组和螺藻组中苦草的相对生长率分别下降了40.9%和36.4%,分株数也分别下降了56.4%和64.1%,分析认为蓝藻在水体表层堆积所产生的遮光可能是抑制底层苦草生长的主要原因。然而,环棱螺能在一定程度上促进苦草的生长,加螺组和螺藻组中苦草的相对生长率和分株数分别要明显高于对照组和加藻组,这可能要归因于螺类的牧食去除了沉水植物表面附着生物。实验中蓝藻堆积和螺类牧食对苦草的各项生长指标均无显著的交互作用,但蓝藻对苦草生长的抑制作用要远大于螺类对植物生长的促进作用。研究证实了在富营养浅水湖泊中,水华蓝藻在湖泊沿岸带的堆积会严重胁迫沉水植物的生长,而底栖螺类的牧食活动则能在一定程度上提高植物在不良环境下的生存能力。  相似文献

The first microfaunal colonization study of continental lakes in Antarctica is reported. In addition to the general taxonomic composition of six Antarctic lakes, detailed community composition analyses of two adjacent lakes, Lake Fryxell and Lake Hoare, using polyurethane foam artificial substrates suspended in the open water and placed directly over benthic algal mats are also presented. Protozoans, rotifers, tardigrades and nematodes constituted the microfaunal community in all lakes. Higher metazoans do not occur in lakes that we studied. Protozoans were the most diverse of the four groups, and the first dinoflagellates reported from southern Victoria Land, Gymnodinium and Glenodinium, were collected from Lake Fryxell. The greatest number of protozoan taxa (55) were associated with the algal mats in the more productive Lake Fryxell. Both the physical and chemical properties and taxonomic diversity showed marked variability between all lakes that were studied, especially the adjacent lakes, Fryxell and Hoare. Ecological variables which regulate taxonomic diversity in other lakes of the world also appear to exert similar influences in remote Antarctic lakes.  相似文献

Benthic algal mats and phytoplankton of Lake Gondwana (Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) were investigated. Biomass, chlorophyll content and floristic analyses were carried out on algal mats. The mats are composed of two layers different in colour, floristic composition and chlorophyll content. The algal flora of the mats amount to 34 taxa (19 Cyanophyta, 7 Bacillariophyta, 8 Chlorophyta). The phytoplankton community is species-poor (only 5 taxa). Crytophyta account for about 98% of total algal density.  相似文献

A taxonomic study was made of the periphytic algal flora of some freshwater environments at Hope Bay, Antarctic Peninsula (63°27S; 56°59W), during summer 1992–1993. Seven lakes and two pools that are characterized by different trophic levels were studied. The largest, Boeckella Lake, has an important outflow (Prasiola Stream) that was also analyzed. Ninety-seven algal taxa, including specific and infraspecific entities, are recorded. Thirty-one new records for the Antarctic continent are described and illustrated. The flora comprises 44.4% Cyanophyceae, 21.6% Bacillariophyceae, 18.5% Chlorophyceae, 9.3% Tribophyceae, 4.2% Chrysophyceae and 2% Zygophyceae. The epilithic flora of Hope Bay shows a high species richness. Phormidiumfragile and Lyngbya lagerheimii were the most abundant species among the Cyanophyceae. In the algal mats we also found Chrysophyceae (mainly Hydrurus foetidus and Chrysococcus rufescens) and the macroscopic chlorophycean Prasiola crispa. Tribonema australis sp. nov. (Tribonematales, Tribophyceae) is put forward as a new species. Hormidium fluitans (Gay) Heering is renamed Klebshormidium fluitans.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in phytoplankton species composition (frequencies) and densities (cell numbers) in nine North African coastal lakes selected in Morocco (Merja Sidi Bou Rhaba, Zerga and Bokka), Tunisia (Chitane, Ichkeul and Korba lakes) and Egypt (Edku, Burullus and Manzala lakes) were investigated during 1998. The main aim was to provide gase-line information about overall phytoplankton diversity and how phytoplanktoncharacteristics differ between these contrasting aquatic systems.Water samples were collected at approximately three monthly intervals and phytoplankton analysis revealed marked seasonal and spatial differences in the quantitative and qualitative composition of the communities at each site. The Egyptian lakes generally had larger crops (Manzala and Burullus had mean crop densities of more than 104 cells ml–1) but in the western North African sites only Korba and Sidi Bou Rhaba had closely comparable densities. Algae belonging to Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae were recorded. Taxa representative of all these algal groups occurred in two lakes (Korba and Manzala) but at the other seven sites only some of the groups were present.The Chlorophyceae was the most dominant group in lakes Burullus, Manzala, Korba and Sidi Bou Rhaba whereas Bacillariophyceae were dominant in lakes Zerga, Bokka and Edku. In Ichkeul and acidic Chitane the Dinophyceae and the Cyanophyceae were the dominant groups, respectively. The maximum percentage of Euglenophyceae occurred in Edku Lake but this group was absent in Sidi Bou Rhaba and Ichkeul. Cyanophyceans were present in significant numbers in all investigated lakes except in Ichkeul. A total of fifty-three genera were recorded, 17 of Chlorophyceae, 18 of Bacillariophyceae, 11 of Cyanophyceae, 3 of Chrysophyceae, 2 of Euglenophyceae and 2 of Dinophyceae. The maximum number of species (34) occurred in Burullus Lake and the minimum (6) in Ichkeul Lake. Only one lake (acidic Chitane) possessed species indicative of oligotrophic conditions. The Nile Delta lakes were the most species diverse sites.The phytoplankton communities of the nine North African lakes were composed entirely of cosmopolitan species but with one new species (Cyclotella choctawatcheeana) was recorded for the region. The data presented provide a contemporary account of the levels of algal diversity present in these sites at the end of the 20th century. The relevance of phytoplankton communities to assessment of lake status and future monitoring studies in the region is emphasised.  相似文献

A field program was conducted in 1980 and 1981 on three lakes in Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia, to study plankton-water chemistry relationships in a region of potential acid precipitation stress. Among lake and between year comparisons were made. The three study sites represent two different types of lakes. Kejimkujik Lake (pH 4.8) and Pebbleloggitch Lake (pH 4.5) are both high-colored, dystrophic acid lakes. Beaverskin Lake is a clear, oligotrophic lake which is not as acidic (pH 5.4). The phytoplankton of Kejimkujik Lake was dominated by diatoms, while Pebbleloggitch Lake was dominated by chlorophytes and chrysophytes, and Beaverskin Lake was dominated by cyanophytes. Kejimkujik Lake had the highest total algal cell volume per liter, and Pebbleloggitch Lake the lowest. Rotifer populations composed the majority of the zooplankton communities, while the crustacean zooplankton were dominated by the acid-tolerant copepod Diaptomus minutus. Kejimkujik Lake had the lowest zooplankton biomass and Pebbleloggitch Lake the highest zooplankton biomass per m3. A pattern of highest algal density in Beaverskin Lake, but highest zooplankton density in Pebbleloggitch Lake emerged in both years. This is likely an effect of abundant, but unsuitable food (blue-green algae) in Beaverskin Lake and important detrital food resources in Pebbleloggitch Lake in both years. Multiple regression analysis of water chemistry variables with plankton species produced many significant effects, but failed to show clear patterns. Cause and effect relationships in aquatic ecosystems are poorly delineated by such techniques.  相似文献
