Phytoplankton of the Etang de Berre and Etang de Vaïne (N.W. Mediterranean) The phytoplankton in the brackish Etang de Berre and Etang de Vaïne was studied regularly at 12 stations for two years. The recent diversion of the Durance River into the Etang de Berre has effected a fundamental change in this formerly marine environment, which has had a great impact on its plankton populations. A total of 182 taxa were identified, including 111 Bacillariophyceae, 44 Chlorophyceae, and 15 Cyanophyceae. The most abundant species are small freshwater algae, mainly Chlorophyceae, since the salinity is generally less than 3 0/00. However, during summer and fall, as well as in waters near the bottom, the salinity can reach 15 0/00 and marine diatoms are predominant. Because the nutrients in the environment are constantly replenished, phytoplankters are always numerous, ranging in abundance between several million to several hundred million per liter. There is a somewhat irregular seasonal cycle. The average density is about 108 cells/1 in the Etang de Berre, and about double that amount in the Etang de Vaïne. Differences in phytoplankton abundance and composition at the various stations or at various depths are slight.  相似文献

Water transparency and seston weight were measured in the brackish Etang de Berre and Etang de Vaïne (between the Rhone river and Marseilles), in nearby seawater and in four main tributaries of the Etang de Berre. The large quantities of seston conveyed by rivers, particularly the Durance diversion, strongly reduce the transparency in the brackish waters. The transparency progressively increases from freshwater to open seawater, as mineral particles sink to the bottom (about 1.7 kg m-2 a-1 on the average in brackish lakes). Comparatively, the role played by phytoplankton in light attenuation amounts to only 5% in seawater and 10–17% in Etang de Berre. In spite of turbidity, the euphotic layer generally extends to the bottom, in both the shallow brackish waters and in the deeper seawater.  相似文献

The annual cycles of nutrients in the Etang de Berre were studied in 1985. From measurements twice a month at the input points, daily data for the freshwater flow and from daily measurements at the output point, an estimation is proposed for a nutrient budget. Seasonal variability is important, and a biological control of nutrient availability (locally remineralized products) results in a hydrologically controlled system (nutrients carried by continental waters) which produces the very high microalgal biomass observed in the lagoon. The seasonal halocline brings the euphotic layer very close to the remineralization site: nutrients are then constantly available to the phytoplankton.  相似文献

The dynamics of the "Etang de Berre", a brackish lagoon situated close to the French Mediterranean sea coast, is strongly disturbed by freshwater inputs coming from an hydroelectric power station. The system dynamics has been described as a sequence of daily typical states from a set of physicochemical variables such as temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen rates collected over three years by an automatic sampling station. Each daily pattern summarizes the evolution, hour by hour of the physicochemical variables. This article presents results of forecasts of the states of the system subjected to the simultaneous effects of meteorological conditions and freshwater releases. We recall the main step of the classification tree method used to build up the predictive model (Classification and Regression Trees, Breiman et al., 1984) and we propose a transfer procedure in order to test the stability of the model. Results obtained on the Etang de Berre data set allow us to describe and predict the effects of the environmental variables on the system dynamics with a margin of error. The transfer procedure applied after the tree building process gives a maximum gain in prediction accuracy of about 15%.  相似文献

The biodiversity of microbial mats inhabiting the oil-contaminated lagoon Etang de Berre was determined by molecular approaches. The fingerprint of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and automatic ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA) of mats exposed to different pollution levels showed specific microbial communities for each site but similar diversity richness. Species composition of the mats were compared by constructing 16S rRNA libraries. Amplified rDNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) of clone libraries confirmed their similar level of diversity richness. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA sequences showed that the classes gamma and alpha of Proteobacteria were abundantly present in both sites whereas phylotypes related to the delta-Proteobacteria and to the uncultured WS3 group were mainly found in the site with the highest pollution. Identification of the species involved in oil degradation by combining culture-based approaches and DGGE, showed that enrichment cultures were constituted by members of the Rhodobacterales and species related to Rhodococcus, Sphingomonas, Xanthomonas and Microbacterium, all of them known for their ability to degrade hydrocarbons. Our findings suggest that oil pollution has not affected the biodiversity richness of the mats. However, the populations involved in hydrocarbon degradation represent a minor fraction of the mat communities in the Etang de Berre.  相似文献

A pollen profile from Marais du Sagnas at the northern edge of the Etang de Berre lagoon, west of Marseille, is compared and correlated with a profile (C10) from the southern margin of the lagoon. This new profile extends the pollen record for the area to recent times. The palaeoecological data now available indicate distinct phases of marine influence in the lagoon from about 900 A.D. (non-calibrated) to the 16/17 century. These correspond to historically known drier periods during which it appears that reduced freshwater input facilitated increased influx of saline water.  相似文献

Surrounded by a heavily industrialized area, subject to natural fresh water dilution (Etang de Berre, Rhône river), the Gulf of Fos is an unbalanced neritic zone. Its distrophic character is accentuated by numerous continental discharges; furthermore, the climatic instability which characterizes this region (irregular periods of winds, fluvial risings) reinforces the changing ecological conditions in the gulf waters. The present paper shows the major ecological conditions in that neritic area, and the main events occured during the 1976–1978 period, through and extensive sampling network. The principal regulating features are thus described by the mean of a mathematical data processing (Principal Components Analysis).  相似文献

Heavy and constant inputs of freshwater into the north of the Berre lagoon over a period of more than 20 years, due to the diversion of the Durance River, resulted in the total disappearance of the macrobenthos at depths of more than 5 m. Only one community that had adapted well to the brackish conditions had survived on the thin coastal fringe. In 1990, abnormal drought conditions resulted in the interruption of freshwater inputs for a period of 7 months. A study of the changes in the benthic fauna subjected to these new ecological conditions, carried out during the second semester of 1990, shows that the prolonged stoppage of freshwater inputs was marked mainly by the appearance of marine species on the coastal fringe within the brackish community and by the colonization of the azoic bottoms by various macrobenthic species. This recruitment can be attributed to the stable conditions prevailing in the lagoon during this period, with no sharp fluctuations in salinity, no silt discharge and in particular an increase in the dissolved oxygen content in the water column. The colonization that was observed demonstrates that the chemical nature of the Berre lagoon sediments does not constitute a major limiting factor compared to the freshwater inputs.  相似文献

The flux of phosphate in the aquatic ecosystems of the Camargue was modelled. The model developed for the hydrological unit, the water basin of the Aube de Bouic, is based on the hydrology of the system, the reaction equations of the adsorption of phosphate onto Fe(OOH) and the solubility product of apatite. The water basin consists of an inlet canal, the Aube de Bouic, ricefields and natural marshes, plus a drainage canal through which the excess water is pumped into the Etang de Vaccarès. Phosphate is introduced into ricefields either with the irrigation water, taken from the Rhône, or as fertiliser. Most of the phosphate will be fixed on the ricefield soils either as iron-bound or as calcium-bound phosphate, depending on the pH. The o-phosphate concentration will slowly increase to an extent depending on the pH. From the ricefields water will flow towards the Etang de Vaccarès; the amount of phosphate reaching the Etang de Vaccarès depends on the pH of the system and the depth of the water outlet of the ricefields. In six different scenarios the amount of phosphate reaching the Etang de Vaccarès is calculated depending on the quantity of fertiliser, the depth of the water outlet and the pH. For the Etang de Vaccarès the model predicts the present concentration of o-P relatively well and shows that the loading is considerable. This should cause concern; the danger of serious eutrophication is real. Part of the irrigation water is used to refill or keep under water the natural marshes in this hydrological unit, which without irrigation would dry out during summer. Again high P-concentrations are found in the marshes, but mostly in the form of Fe(OOH)P or CaCO3P, the ratio of which depends again on the pH of the sediments. Résumé L'évolution des structures de distribution de l'oxygène (concentration et saturation) a été suivie, dans les eaux de l'Etang de Berre, durant plusieurs années. A l'existence d'une pycnocline (halocline) à gradient très exprimé, correspond celle d'une oxycline aboutissant à l'anoxie dans certain cas. L'analyse des relations entre oxygène et phosphore minéral, en conditions de pénurie d'oxygène, montre que l'existence d'anomalies dans ces relations tient au fonctionnement du système consommation-production-régénération. Un concept de bilan théorique d'oxygène dans un bassin saumâtre est proposé.
The evolution of oxygen distribution parameters (concentration and saturation) has been monitored in brackish waters of lake Etang de Berre during several years. In relation with the occurrence of a well-defined pycnocline (halocline) an oxycline is shown to be present, leading to anoxic conditions in some cases. The relationships between oxygen and nutrients under conditions of oxygen depletion are examined and it is shown that anomalies are due to the dynamic aspects of the consumption-production-regeneration system. A concept of theoretical oxygen budget in a brackish water basin is proposed.

We recently published a new method based on determining cyanobacterial biomass by confocal laser scanning microscopy image analysis (CLSM-IA) (Solé et al., Ultramicrosc 107:669–673, 2007). CLSM-IA allows biomass calculation for microorganisms of a small size, since the limit of the technique’s resolution is that generated by a voxel, the smallest unit of a three-dimensional digital image, equivalent to 1.183 × 10−3 mgC/cm3 of sediment. This method is especially suitable for the quantitative analysis of a large number of CLSM images generated from benthic sediments in which complex populations of cyanobacteria are abundant, such as microbial mats. In order to validate the new CLSM approach, mats with varying structural characteristics were studied. We have grouped them into three types: Microcoleus mats (laminated), sandy mats (nonlaminated and composed of well-sorted quartz sands), and oil-polluted mats. In this work, we applied CLSM-IA in natural [the Ebro delta and Sant Jordi colony (Spain), Salins-de-Giraud and Etang de Berre (France), and Orkney Islands (Scotland)] and artificial [mesocosms (Israel)] microbial mats. A total of 4,103 confocal images were obtained in order to determine total and individual cyanobacteria biomass profiles, at microscale level. The data presented in this paper show the efficacy of the method, as it can be applied to highly diverse mat samples.  相似文献

5-Bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR)-induced segmentation and BUdR-induced asymmetry of the chromatids probably reflect a two-stage mechanism. The first stage consists of a BUdR substitution of the thymidine in the DNA during S period. The second stage, less obviously demonstrated, involves either alteration of chromosomal proteins or an imperfect association between substituted DNA and normal or abnormal proteins. This second stage takes place at different times, according to the type of chromatid modification: during S or G 2 period in the case of segmentation, and during G 1 in the case of asymmetry. One important implication of our experimental results is that the appearance of metaphasic chromatids is at least partly determined by the time of the G 1 period.L'induction d'une asymétrie, ou d'une segmentation des chromatides par un traitement au BUdR, résulte probablement d'un mécanisme à deux étapes distinctes. La première consiste en une substitution de la thymidine par le BUdR survenant lors de la replication de l'ADN. La seconde, plus difficile à mettre en évidence, consiste en une modification des protéines chromosomiques, ou en une mauvaise association entre les protéines, modifiées ou non, et l'ADN ayant incorporé le BUdR. The Comparative Productivity of Two Ponds in the Vicinity of Lake St-John, Québec In 1980 and 1981, the productivity of two ponds near Lake St. John were evaluated. One, the pond of Desbiens, did not communicate with Lake St. John and the other, the pond of St-Gédéon, was connected to the lake. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution that a pond could make to the increase in productivity of Lake St. John which is a reservoir. The pond of Desbiens is more productive than Lake St. John but two to three times less than the pond of St-Gédéon. The pond of Desbiens shows an advanced degree of eutrophication whereas the pond of St-Gédéon is similar to the northern lakes by its physico-chemistry, zooplankton, sediments and benthic fauna. If we want to create artificial ponds, for a better productivity of reservoirs, it is important that they be connected to each other.  相似文献

Lake Verevi is a hypertrophic and strongly stratified (partly meromictic) small temperate lake. Vertical distribution of sediment phosphorus fractions as well as iron, manganese, organic matter and calcium carbonate of the deep bottom sediment was determined. The study focused on the ecologically important layer of the sediment [<20(45) cm]. In the uppermost layers of the sediment, NaOH-NRP (organic P) dominated while HCl-RP (apatite-P) became dominant in some deeper layers below 7 cm. Extremely high concentrations of labile phosphorus fraction (NH4Cl-RP) indicated the low binding capacity of phosphorus by lake sediment. Due to sediment and hypolimnion anoxia, the internal load of phosphorus in this lake is most likely. Potentially mobile phosphorus fractions (NH4Cl-RP, BD-RP, NaOH-NRP) formed 301 kg in upper 10 cm thick sediment layer of hypolimnetic bottom sediment (40% of lake bottom area).  相似文献

La réponse visuelle des adultes de Lasiomma melania Ackl. (Diptera, Anthomyiidae) à des carrés englués de diverses couleurs ou combinaisons de couleurs a été étudiée durant 5 années consécutives dans plusieurs mélèzins (Larix decidua) des Hautes-Alpes. Une préférence pour le jaune et le jaune à bandes pourpres a été mise en évidence chez ce ravageur dont la femelle pond sur les cônes de mélèze. L'attractivité de chaque type de piège est fonction à la fois du sexe et du stade de maturation sexuelle des individus. La couleur jaune attire en majorité des insectes émergents immatures. Elle semble représenter, selon le plan dans lequel elle est située, un signal nutritionnel de type fleur (plan horizontal) ou un signal de reconnaissance du feuillage de mélèze (plan vertical). Les individus mûrs sexuellement, recherchant les arbres produisant des cônes, sont en revanche capturés essentiellement sur les pièges verticaux jaunes à bandes pourpres. Ceux-ci miment, en l'amplifiant, le contraste de réflectance existant entre le feuillage des mélèzes et les cônes. Ce contraste paraît correspondre à un signal permettant la reconnaisance des arbres possédant des cônes. La ponte est cependant limitée à un stade particulier de développment de ces derniers alors que le contraste est à peu près stable dans le temps. D'autres signaux émis par les cônes, vraisemblablement d'ordre olfactif, doivent guider le vol d'approche et l'atterrissage des femelles.  相似文献

Limitation of bacterioplankton production by nutrients and temperature was investigated in eight temperate lakes in summer. Six of the lakes were resampled in autumn. The lakes differ in nutrient content, water color, and concentration of dissolved organic carbon. Nutrients (phosphorus, nitrogen, and organic carbon) were added alone and in all possible combinations to filtered lake water inoculated with bacteria from the lake. After incubation for 36–40 h at in situ temperatures (ranging from 7 to 20°C), the response in bacterioplankton production was determined. The effect of increased temperature on bacterioplankton growth was also tested. Bacterioplankton production was often limited by phosphorus alone, organic carbon alone, or the two in combination. Phosphorus limitation of bacterioplankton production was more common in the summer, whereas limitation by organic carbon was more frequently observed in the autumn. There was a close balance between limitation by phosphorus and organic carbon in the epilimnion in the summer. In the hypolimnion in the summer, bacterioplankton growth was primarily phosphorus-limited. The effect of phosphorus additions decreased with increasing phosphorus concentrations in the lakes. However, there were no correlations between the effect of added organic carbon and water color, dissolved organic carbon concentration, or phosphorus concentration. When temperature was low (in the hypolimnion in the summer, and throughout the water column in the autumn) temperature also limited bacterioplankton production. Thus, temperature and inorganic nutrients or organic compounds can limit bacterioplankton growth both alone and simultaneously. However, at low temperatures, temperature is the most important factor influencing bacterioplankton growth.  相似文献

A high resolution autoradiographic study of the incorporation of tritiated uridine and amino acids by the mitochondrial groups, which are typical of most of germ cells at the beginning of gametogenesis, has been made on tench spermatocytes. By this technique, we confirm the partially proteinacious composition of the intermitochondrial “cement”; and for the first time, the presence of RNA in the “cement” is demonstrated by autoradiography. Moreover, a study of the kinetics of the incorporation of both precursors makes likely the hypothesis that at least a part of the “cement” derived from nucleocytoplasmic transfer. Since the biogenesis of mitochondria results from the complementary functioning of the two protein synthesic systems, the cytoplasmic one, which is preponderant, and the mitochondrial one, the mitochondrial groups seem to be the direct visualization of the contribution of the nuclear genome to the edification of new mitochondria.L'étude par autoradiographie à haute résolution de l'incorporation d'uridine et d'acides aminés tritiés par les groupements mitochondriaux, formations caractéristiques de la plupart des cellules germinales en début de gamétogenèse, a été effectuée dans les spermatocytes de tanche. En outre, l'étude cinétique de l'incorporation des deux catégories de précurseurs rend fort vraisemblable l'hypothèse de l'origine d'une partie au moins du ciment par transfert nucléocytoplasmique. La biogenèse des mitochondries résultant du fonctionnement complémentaire de deux systèmes de synthèse protéique, l'un prépondérant, cytoplasmique, l'autre minoritaire, mitochondrial, les groupements mitochondriaux semblent bien être une visualisation directe de la contribution du génome nucléaire à l'édification de mitochondries nouvelles.  相似文献

Differences in enzymatic hydrolysis of dissolved organic phosphorus and subsequent phosphorus uptake were compared by using dual-labeled (γ-32P and 2-3H) ATP in oligotrophic Lake Michigan and a moderately eutrophic lake in southeastern Michigan. More than 50% of the phosphate that was hydrolyzed was immediately taken up into bacterium-sized particles in the eutrophic lake and at a near-shore site in Lake Michigan. Less than 50% of the hydrolyzed phosphate was taken up into bacterium-sized particles at an offshore site in Lake Michigan. It is hypothesized that differences in size-fractionated uptake were the result of greater phosphorus utilization capacity in bacteria in habitats where loading of organic carbon is greater. Substantial isotope dilution of labeled phosphate uptake by unlabeled phosphate occurred, which implied that the phosphate was hydrolyzed extracellularly in both systems. Comparable nucleotidase activities were measured in the eutrophic lake and Lake Michigan, but the significance of the phosphate regenerated relative to particulate phosphorus pools was an order of magnitude greater in Lake Michigan. Seventy percent of the nucleotidase activity was inhibited by 100 μM phosphate in the eutrophic lake, which suggests that most hydrolysis was by phosphatase. Therefore, nucleotidase activity may be more important to phosphorus regeneration in oligotrophic habitats than phosphatase activity.  相似文献
