Maize (Zea mays) is an important food crop in the foothills of the Nepal Himalaya Mountains. Surveys have found that maize in Nepal is contaminated withFusarium species, mainlyF. verticillioides andF. proliferatum, which produce fumonisins, andF. graminearum, which produces trichothecenes, mainly nivalenol and 4-deoxynivalenol. Maize from smallholder farms and markets is often contaminated with fumonisins and trichothecenes above 1000 ng/g, a level of concern for human health. These mycotoxins were not eliminated by traditional fermentation for producing maize beer, but Nepalese women were able to detoxify contaminated maize by hand-sorting visibly disease kernels. An integrated approach to reduce mycotoxins risks in maize in Nepal and other developing countries should include plant breeding to produce ear rot resistant cultivars, along with education in mycotoxins risks and in agricultural and grain storage practices to reduce mycotoxin contamination. Aims: To monitor seasonal variations in the microbiology of maize silage and to determine whether the risk of fungal spoilage varies during whole‐year storage. Methods and Results: A continuous survey of 20 maize silage stacks was conducted over a period from three to 11 months after ensiling. Filamentous fungi, yeasts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were enumerated at five time‐points, and cultivable species of filamentous fungi were identified. Significant differences in the numbers of filamentous fungi, yeast and LAB were detected. The highest numbers of fungi were five to seven and the lowest 11 months after ensiling, while the LAB decreased in numbers during the study. Filamentous fungi were isolated from all stacks at all time‐points. The most abundant toxigenic mould species were Penicillium roqueforti, Penicillium paneum and Aspergillus fumigatus. Conclusions: There are significant variations in the microbiology of maize silage over a whole storage season. The risk of fungal spoilage was highest 5–7 months after ensiling and lowest after 11 months. Significance and Impact of the Study: This information is valuable in the assessment of health risks connected with spoiled maize silage and may be useful in the management of maize silage stacks, when whole‐season storage is applied.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to determine the nutrient contents and relative preferences of maize stover and three legumes forages and their feeding on intake and digestibility of sheep. Maize stover was blended with three legumes, stylo (Stylosanthes guainensis), siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum) and centro (Centrocema pubescens), to produce four treatments, namely, only maize stover (control), stover/stylo, stover/siratro and stover/centro mixtures. The first experiment evaluated the relative preference of the stover and the various stover/legume mixtures when offered to sheep. Six rams were offered pair combinations of the treatments in a 6×6 Latin square with a split plot arrangement such that each ram had access to two feeds at a time in each period of 6 days. The second experiment included measurements of intake and digestibility of the stover and stover/legume mixtures. Four intact and four castrated male sheep were used in two, 4×4 Latin squares with 21-day periods. The least (P<0.05) preferred feed was maize stover when it was offered as the sole feed. There were no significant differences in preference among the stover/legume mixtures. Dry matter intake (DMI) was highest (P<0.05) when sheep were offered the stover/centro mixture and lowest (P<0.05) when maize stover was fed as the sole feed. Dry matter digestibility did not differ significantly among treatments. Sheep that were offered maize stover only lost weight, those fed stover/centro gained weight and those that were fed either stover/siratro or stover/stylo maintained weight. However, these short-term weight changes may reflect changes in fill as much as changes in body tissue. Addition of legumes to maize stover improved the nutritive value, possibly by increasing the nitrogen content of the stover. The results suggest that maize stover, which is normally left to rot in the field, could be better utilised by intercropping with legumes and allowing animals access after grain harvest.  相似文献

Jean Adams discusses the evidence around food marketing restrictions and how they may be an effective way to support public health.

We live in a world increasingly saturated with marketing for less healthy foods [1]. One study found that children in New Zealand see an average of 27 instances of marketing for less healthy foods and only 12 for healthier foods, each day [2]. Food marketing involves activities across the 4 Ps of the marketing mix: product, place, price, and promotion. We are encouraged to buy less healthy food products through their placement in prominent store locations such as checkouts, end of aisles, and store entrances; price discounts; and promotions including advertising, cartoon tie-ins, and celebrity endorsements.Systematic reviews have confirmed the effectiveness of these marketing techniques to influence purchasing and consumption of less healthy foods [35]. Indeed, the documented power of food marketing has led the World Health Organisation to recommended limiting exposure as an overarching and enabling “best buy” to improve diets [6].Supermarkets remain the location of about 70% of food spend in the United Kingdom [7]. The concentration of food marketing in grocery stores can feel particularly overwhelming with parents describing the “temptation” as “like a trip to the zoo every week” for their children [8]. As such, supermarkets may be particularly important venues for addressing food marketing.In 2 accompanying Research Articles in PLOS Medicine, Piernas and colleagues used nonrandomised approaches to study the impacts on sales of a range of strategies to rebalance the marketing of healthier versus less healthy products in 3 large UK supermarket chains [9,10]. Across the 2 papers, 7 different interventions were implemented that changed the relative availability of healthier versus less healthy products (2 interventions), removed less healthy products from prominent positions, placed healthier products at eye level, offered price discounts on healthier products, increased signage on healthier products, and applied a range of entertainment tie-in promotions on healthier products (one intervention each). These variously had the intention to encourage substitution of less healthy products with healthier alternatives or to reduce purchasing of less healthy foods without substitution.Increasing the relative availability of healthier products, removing less healthy products from prominent positions and price promotions on healthier products were all associated with changes in unit sales in the expected direction, although associations with changes in nutrients purchased were sometimes more modest. In contrast, moving healthier products to eye level and increasing signage were not associated with changes in sales. These findings are particularly timely in England where a range of measures to reduce exposure to marketing of less healthy foods in retail environments are due to be implemented from October 2022 [11].Piernas and colleagues worked in collaboration with large UK supermarket chains. That the chains were prepared to innovate to support public health indicates that rebalancing marketing towards healthier products may not be as burdensome to the sector as it has sometimes claimed [12]. It also strengthens the external validity of these studies giving an indication of how customers react in real-world environments.However, that the supermarket chains decided what the interventions should be also imposes limitations on wider interpretation of the findings. Each of the 7 different interventions applied to different categories of foods without any rationale made explicit to the research team—for example, chocolate confectionary was removed from prominent positions, higher fibre breakfast cereals were placed at eye level, and price discounts were applied to fruit and vegetables. This makes it hard to determine whether observed impacts were unique to specific combinations of intervention and food category. Indeed, rather than particular marketing interventions being more effective than others across the board, it is possible that complex interplays between food category, marketing intervention, and other contextual aspects (such as shop and customer characteristics) interact to produce changes in sales.The “squeezed balloon effect” proposes that restrictions on specific aspects of marketing may lead to compensatory increases in others [13]. For example, restricting television advertising of less healthy foods during and around children’s programmes in the UK was associated with increased exposure of adults to these adverts [14]. Wider compensation between, as well as within, media (for example, TV restrictions leading to more online marketing) may also be expected. It is possible that supermarkets willing to engage in university-assessed marketing changes may have self-policed any simultaneous compensatory activities, and, anyway, these would not necessarily have been identified in the studies by Piernas and colleagues. Any real-life compensation as the whole grocery sector adapts to government-imposed marketing restrictions may be difficult to predict. This reinforces the need for postimplementation evaluation.The squeezed balloon effect means that the most effective marketing restrictions may be those that target marketing of the same products through multiple simultaneous interventions. In Chile, near-simultaneous implementation of front-of-pack warning labels, advertising restrictions, and a prohibition of sales in schools of products high in calories, sodium, sugar, or saturated fat were associated with substantial declines in purchases of targeted foods and nutrients [15]. This approach is also the underlying strategy in England where near-simultaneous restrictions on TV and online advertising of less healthy foods are planned for the whole of the UK alongside the England-specific bans on location and price-based promotions [16].Despite the innovative approach in England, neither the regulations on TV and online advertising of less healthy foods nor on price and location-based promotions of these foods have cleared the parliamentary process. The UK government recently accepted an amendment to the TV and online advertising restrictions to give the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care power to delay implementation [17]. The restrictions on price and location-based promotions may be under threat of being dropped altogether [18].Piernas and colleagues’ studies add to the accumulating evidence that restricting marketing on less healthy foods and encouraging marketing on healthier foods may be an effective way to support public health. Theory and a range of evidence suggest that simultaneous restrictions on a variety of different types of less healthy food marketing are likely to be the most effective ways of reducing exposure to this marketing. The UK government has proposed this approach in England on a number of occasions. That implementation continues to hang in the balance is a sad indictment of our collective inability to create a world that supports everyone to eat in the way they want to, rather than the way the marketers want for us.  相似文献

The development of biotechnology is influenced by many factors unique for a specific region. In Poland the lack of legislative solutions (to facilitate the promotion of the inventions) and the public resistance against certain sectors of biotechnology are significant factors limiting any further development. Although, science and technology are the front runners in any innovation, the significance of social and legal aspects is difficult to overestimate. In our opinion those factors are interconnected and crucial for marketing of innovative products, therefore, we indicate and explain the most important issues restraining the implementation of innovative biotechnology in the context of national specificity in Poland.  相似文献

基于东北地区玉米生态系统土壤呼吸连续2个生长季的观测,阐明了土壤呼吸日、季节变化特征,综合分析了水热因子、土壤性质、生物量及叶面积指数(LAI)对土壤呼吸的影响。结果表明:玉米地土壤呼吸日变化为不对称的单峰型曲线,最小值和最大值分别出现在6:00-7:00和13:00左右。2005年玉米生长季土壤呼吸速率均值为3.16μmol CO2&#183;m^-2&#183;s^-1,最大值为4.77μmol CO2&#183;m^-2&#183;s^-1,出现在7月28日;最小值为1.31μmol CO2&#183;m^-2&#183;s^-1,出现在5月4日。统计分析表明:土壤温度是玉米生态系统土壤呼吸日变化的驱动因素;土壤温度和土壤水分是影响土壤呼吸季节变化的关键因素,二者可以解释玉米生长季土壤呼吸时间变异的87%;LAI和根系生物量与土壤呼吸速率呈正相关,说明生物因子对土壤呼吸季节变化也有影响;土壤有机质、全氮和碳氮比等土壤理化特性与土壤呼吸速率的关系较弱;玉米生长季追施氮肥明显促进土壤呼吸速率。  相似文献

In this study, the levels of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), ochratoxin A (OTA), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON) and fumonisins (FUM) in unprocessed cereals (n = 189) and cereal-based products (n = 61) were determined using validated ELISA methods. All samples originated from either conventional or organic production corresponded to the 2015 harvest in Croatia. Based on the mean mycotoxin concentrations, the risk for the consumer to exceed the tolerable daily intake (TDI) for these toxins by the consumption of both types of cereals and cereal-based products was assessed. Mycotoxin contamination of organic cereals and organic cereal-based products was not significantly different (p > 0.05). Given that the exposure assessment resulted in a small fraction of the TDI (maximum: DON, 12% of TDI), the levels of the investigated mycotoxins in both types of cereals and cereal-based products from the 2015 harvest did not pose a human health hazard.  相似文献

Samples (n=106) of maize and maize products were analysed for 13 trichothecene toxins and zearalenone (ZON). All 14 toxins examined were detected, although with varying frequency. Cooccurrence of two or more toxins was observed in 96% of samples. The toxins of the scirpenol group scirpentriol, 15-monoacetoxyscirpenol and diacetoxyscirpenol were detected in 14, 27 and 3% of the samples analysed, the toxins of the T-2 group T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, T-2 triol und T-2 tetraol were found in 33, 66, 2 and 7%. Toxin content was higher in feeds than in foods (semolina and flour). In food samples, the German regulatory level for DON (500 μg/kg) was not exceeded, three samples of maize flour contained ZON above the regulatory level (50 μg/kg). Glucocorticoids (GC) act as potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agents on a variety of immune cells. However, the exact mechanisms of their action are still unknown. Recently, we demonstrated that GC induce apoptosis in human peripheral blood monocytes. In the present study, we examined the signaling pathway in GC-induced apoptosis. Monocyte apoptosis was demonstrated by annexin V staining, DNA laddering, and electron microscopy. Apoptosis required the activation of caspases, as different caspase inhibitors prevented GC-induced cell death. In addition, the proteolytic activation of caspase-8 and caspase-3 was observed. In additional experiments, we determined the role of the death receptor CD95 in GC-induced apoptosis. CD95 and CD95 ligand (CD95L) were up-regulated in a dose- and time-dependent manner on the cell membrane and also released after treatment with GC. Costimulation with the GC receptor antagonist mifepristone diminished monocyte apoptosis as well as CD95/CD95L expression and subsequent caspase-8 and caspase-3 activation. In contrast, the caspase inhibitor N:-acetyl-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-aldehyde suppressed caspase-3 activation and apoptosis, but did not down-regulate caspase-8 activation and expression of CD95 and CD95L. Importantly, GC-induced monocyte apoptosis was strongly abolished by a neutralizing CD95L mAb. Therefore, our data suggest that GC-induced monocyte apoptosis is at least partially mediated by an autocrine or paracrine pathway involving the CD95/CD95L system.  相似文献

Despite the importance of Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolcott) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) as a vector of maize‐stunting pathogens, it is not understood how this leafhopper survives the maize off‐season in regions where overwintering hosts do not occur. We investigated migration and the use of alternate hosts as possible survival mechanisms for D. maidis during maize off‐season in Brazil. Dalbulus maidis populations were monitored with yellow sticky cards for 16–29 months in Anastácio (Mato Grosso do Sul State), in two farms with perennial pastures (Pasture1 and Pasture2), where maize had not been planted for >5 years, in a subsistence farm >20 km distant, where maize was annually planted (spring) (Maize1), and in Piracicaba (São Paulo State), where maize was grown year round (Maize2). RAPD‐PCR analysis of leafhoppers sampled on maize in two plots (Maize1 and Pasture1) at 15–20 and 110–120 days after germination was performed. Dalbulus maidis was trapped in the maize plots of all areas, but not in weedy or woody vegetation adjacent to the plots. Higher numbers were trapped throughout the year in Piracicaba, where maize was continuously grown under irrigation, and in the subsistence farm of Anastácio, where volunteer maize plants were available for long periods in the maize off‐season. In Anastácio farms, some population peaks were recorded in the absence of maize from midwinter to early spring, especially after soil plowing. RAPD‐PCR analysis showed that D. maidis populations sampled were genetically similar. Our data suggest that D. maidis uses a mixed strategy to survive the over‐season period in Brazil, in which part of the population overwinters locally on volunteer maize plants or nearby irrigated maize crops, whereas the other individuals migrate to colonize new maize crops in distant areas or regions. We hypothesize that immigrant D. maidis uses the contrast between plowed and vegetated soil as a visual cue for locating new maize crops.  相似文献

在玉米生长季,采用温室盆栽试验,利用分根箱法和根去除法,研究了氮肥对土壤呼吸、土壤基础呼吸、根系呼吸和根际微生物呼吸的影响.试验设4个处理:不种植玉米不施氮肥(CKO)、不种植玉米施氮肥(CKN)、种植玉米不施氮肥(MO)和种植玉米施氮肥(MN).结果表明:不种植玉米处理(CKN和CKO)土壤呼吸速率(土壤基础呼吸)为13.41~77.27 mg C·m-2·h-1,施用氮肥对土壤基础呼吸没有显著影响;种植玉米条件下,施氮处理(MN)的平均土壤呼吸速率为138.54 mg C·m-2·h-1,显著高于不施氮处理(MO),增幅达17.7%,尤其在玉米的抽穗期和开花期增幅明显.施氮肥处理土壤基础呼吸、根系呼吸和根际微生物呼吸对土壤呼吸的贡献率分别为36.2%、45.9%和17.9%,而不施氮肥处理分别为35.5%、36.9%和37.6%.  相似文献
